Child Dental Care Tips for Parents and Kids

• Brush your teeth with your child to set a good example. This will help your child learn by watching and imitating you.

• For children two and older, parents need to be aware of the impact that nutrition and eating/drinking habits have on oral health as well as overall health. Parents can promote healthy habits by limiting sugary drinks, getting rid of the bottle and/or sippy cup and offering healthier meal and snack options.

Oral Care Tips Stage 3 (5-7 years)

Although young children may think they can brush their teeth themselves, most children don’t have the manual dexterity for thorough teeth cleaning until they are about 7 years old. Until

then, help your child brush and floss. Let them “do it themselves” first, and then follow up by helping them brush and floss again. Most young children thrive on regular schedules, so try making morning and evening tooth brushing and flossing a family event and do your own brushing and flossing at the same time. Children five and older are starting to get their permanent molars, so it’s important to use a fluoridated toothpaste and toothbrush.

Oral Care Tips Stage 4 (8+ years)

Once children start school, parents have less influence over their meals and snacks during the day. Set an example for your children by eating a variety of healthy foods yourself, and by following a consistent oral health care routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing.

You may think that children don’t notice, but they do. Pack plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods as healthy snacks, and keep the sugary drinks to a minimum— they are among the factors that can promote tooth decay. Children eight and older should use a fluoridated toothpaste and a toothbrush that is designed for a complex mixture of different-sized permanent and baby teeth.

One of the best ways to prevent tooth decay in children is to get them enthusiastic about daily dental hygiene. After all, tooth brushing is probably not at the top of your child’s list of favorite things to do. But you can make it more acceptable—and even fun—by choosing a toothpaste and toothbrush that your child will like and will want to use.

VRMC Opens Area’s Most Advanced Catheterization Laboratory

Hospital’s investment in latest technology helps physicians better diagnose and treat heart disease.

SELMA, Alabama (November 1, 2022) – Vaughan Regional Medical Center today opened its new catheterization laboratory ‒ featuring an advanced digital X-ray imaging system from GE -- that allows clinicians to not only evaluate the heart but also see extremely detailed, real-time images of patient’s cardiac anatomy during procedures that require exacting precision.

The $2.5 million, 963 square-foot lab features The Allia ™ IGS 530 system from GE Healthcare that helps physicians at Vaughan Regional treat a variety of medical disorders including diseases of the heart and blood vessels, such as heart attacks.

“Our new cath lab is an important investment by our hospital into our community’s health,” said David McCormack, CEO of Vaughan Regional Medical Center. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country, and for people suffering from a severe cardiac episode, every second counts. The faster patients can get access to life-saving interventions – and this cath lab facilitates such interventions ‒ the greater the chances of survival and recovery with minimal heart damage.

“Response time is critical to cardiac events, and this cath lab at Vaughan Regional gives Selma-area residents a potentially life-saving resource just minutes away,” added McCormack.

Cardiac catheterization is a medical procedure used to diagnose and treat coronary artery and structural heart disease. The imaging system provides advanced capability for visualization during these life-saving procedures, such as placing a tiny wire mesh tube

(stent) in a patient’s artery to sustain or recover blood flow. Cardiologists are able to measure pressures within the heart, see how well the heart valves and heart chambers are working, evaluate an enlarged heart, and check for heart defects.

The Allia IGS 5 is an innovative laser-guided imaging system designed to support the most complex cases with greater precision and confidence.

“It is critical for us to see the anatomy very clearly while guiding catheters, stents and other medical devices to areas needing treatment,” says Dr. Steven Allyn at Vaughan Regional Medical Center. “The high-quality imaging produced by this lab enables our staff to perform these procedures with accuracy and wconfidence.”

The new cath lab is an important addition to Vaughan’s cardiology services, which in August of this year earned accreditation as a Chest Pain Center from the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain

Center Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms. They have streamlined their

systems from admission to evaluation to diagnosis and treatment all the way through to appropriate post-discharge care and recommendations and assistance in patient

lifestyle changes.

Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes.

ating Eggs Improves Your Reflexes

If you want to be able to respond more quickly, you can start by having an omelette for breakfast. Eggs contain an amino acid called tyrosine, which the body synthesizes into norepinephrine and dopamine, compounds that increase energy and alertness

and improve mood. In a 2014 study published in the journal Neuropsychologia, researchers even found that tyrosine enhances our response time and improves our intellectual performance, not unlike a medical stimulant like Ritalin or Modafinil.

Immunizations Prevent Diseases

R

outine childhood immunization is one of the crown achievements in public health over the past century. A 2013 New England Journal of Medicine study estimated that childhood vaccination programs have prevented 103.1 million cases of diphtheria, hepatitis A, measles, mumps, pertussis, polio and rubella since 1924. A 2005 Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine study estimated that for every dollar spent in the US, vaccination programs saved more than $5 in direct costs and approximately $11 in additional costs to society.

However, challenges remain. Outbreaks of pertussis, measles, Hib, and other vaccine preventable diseases are returning. Numerous factors-including the cost of acquiring and administering vaccines an increasingly complex delivery system, as well as a small but growing number of parents who are foregoing vaccination for their children-put success in jeopardy.

On the following page is a table of recommended immunizations for children from birth through 6 years old. If you have any questions, contact your physician for more information.

RHMPI looks ahead to 202 ...

W

ishing each of you a Happy New Year from the Rural Health Medical Program family. This past year has been unprecedented in terms of how we go about our daily lives from educating our children, working to provide for our families, and ensuring our healthcare needs are met. It’s been quite the year to say the least.

RURAL HEALTH ARTICLE

As we enter a new year, I would like to commend each of you for overcoming the unfamiliar and unique challenges that brought. We have all learned to adjust to new ways of navigating life as we know it since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic

We have watched the pandemic impact countries around the world. As I reflect on its impact in rural Alabama, I stand in awe of the collaborative efforts made by leaders across West Alabama. Each of you have answered the call of duty to meet the he level of strategic plann and coordination that has occurred to ensure testing for our most vulnerable populations has been remarkable. We have all worked together to provide resources, funding, and above all the people that were willing to stand on the front lines to . Leaders from local municipalities, school systems, housing authorities, and community organizations have risen to the occasion and RHMPI is overjoyed to continue these necessary partnerships because we are definitely -- better together. Let us celebrate the fact that we are still standing and striving for healthier communities in 202

Rest assured that the Rural Health Medical Program maintains our commitment to provid preventative care to patients across Dallas, Perry, Wilcox, Marengo, and Monroe counties while strengthening our ability to aid, educate, test, and vaccinate communities impacte In 202 , we will continue to expand services, reevaluate public healthcare needs, cultivate new community partnerships, seek additional grant opportunities, and create solutions for lack of access to quality healthcare. We look forward to another year’s journey with you!
