We appreciate you taking the time to look through our annual Jack County Community Guide. It is a labor of love and we try to do our best every year to share what is special about Jack County.
For first timers with the guide, we provide an annual list of local events for the county. We have added some monthly items including our Farmers Market, which is held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the last Saturday of the month (March-October) outside the courthouse square in Jacksboro. There are always many vendors selling their wares.
There is no bad time of year to visit our area and maybe you will decide to make your home here, too. This guide is just a small sampling of a part of Texas you will never forget. We hope you enjoy the people, communities, businesses and institutions in Jack County!
We are always happy to see new and old friends alike.
Sincerely,
Jacksboro Herald-Gazette StaffJack County Museum officials, after having a building donated to them, decided a renovation project of buildings would be prudent.
Talk of renovation work began last summer and a committee, consisting of Debbie Wells, Harva Kuykendall and two others, decided to get the ball rolling on what to do with their buildings. The process has been slow, Wells said, due to fixing the roof which has taken several months, due to weather and COVID-19.
The new building, which was donated last summer, and will be called the Judy Rayburn Annex, is located across the street from the City Hall parking lot. Kuykendall said the museum was “totally blessed” to get the building and it took time for committee and board members to determine what to put in the new building. The committee did their homework and went online to look at other small town museums, liking what they found in Hillsboro.
It was determined to move the military room from the old building to the new building down the street.
“We have a lot of military stuff and we were having to cram lots of things into the room,” Wells said. “We’re looking to move the military room across the street.”
Many of the items are from WWII and the Lost Battalion, but Jacksboro and Jack County residents took part in other wars as well and those mementos need to be displayed as well, Wells said.
The present main building at the museum is scheduled to be open sometime this Spring, but there’s still work to be done, including the replacing of some windows
The building “where Texas 4-H began” has had its museum board active in trying to get donations which it has received from Texas Humanities. Some of the donations and grant funds will be used toward marketing materials on letting the public know the museum exists.
Jacksboro’s T-N-T Fest is the crowning jewel of celebrations in the city and is held the last Saturday in June each year.
The day-long event, held at or near Lake Jacksboro, has a number of attractions including a snake show, several tournaments including a corn hole tournament, sponsored by Jack County STOMP, a very popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which brings in players of all ages for some very hotly contested basketball action, and many other activities.
The athletic tournaments continue for the youth as a baseball tournament with several age divisions comes to
town. In previous years, around 5,000 players, coaches, and fans have come to town to support their team.
For younger patrons who want a little less competition, there is also a bounce house to get their energy out. After being removed from the event line-up, a BBQ cook-off, sponsored by the Jacksboro Fire Department, came back in 2019.
For the youngest attendees, the Baby Beautiful contest is a crowd favorite with people setting up 45 minutes to an hour before to make sure they get a great view of the participants. Age groups make things fair for all.
Bands get toes tapping in the early evening. The big event at the festival

is the annual fireworks display over the lake at sundown.
It would not be an event of any type without food. All sorts of food and drink trucks are available. Everything has gotten bigger and better with the choices multiplying over the years.
For those who want something a little lighter in the summer heat, there’s always lemonade and snow cones.
Vendors selling hand-crafted arts and crafts can be found surrounding the festival area, as well.
Lawn chairs are always a necessity at the event. Event details can always be found on Facebook at Jacksboro TNT Fest (@jacksborotntfest).

As part of the growing area Jacksboro and Jack County as a whole is, the Twin Lakes Activity Center, which is used for everything from meetings to shot clinics, could be nearly doubling in size.
The city is working with Harper Perkins Architects on getting a $5 million grant for the expansion, which would expand the facility from its present 10,735 square feet to 19,335 square feet. City Manager Mike Smith showed some preliminary drawings of the expansion at a recent council meeting.
The city is working with Harper Perkins Architects of Wichita Falls who have worked with other cities on similar projects and have received rave reviews from them, according
to Parks and Recreation Supervisor Will Mangum. City officials are expected to find out sometime in March whether the grant application was approved but the city is moving forward and wants to begin turning dirt quickly if it is approved.
The plan is to use slightly under a million for renovating the present building and the rest of the funds for the expansion, which will be to the northeast of the present facility. Smith told the council. Some of the renovation monies would go toward new exercise equipment and a
polymer floor for the gym.
Getting new exercise equipment would allow for law enforcement to have an easier place to work out as well as Center members. One of the rooms has already been painted with just some new trim work to be done which will be used for a cardio room as well as for Zumba and Yoga Classes, according to Mangum.
An annual fee is charged for families, as well as a discount punch card for multiple admissions and individual daily admissions for less frequent users.
The library serving Jack County is named for Gladys Johnson Ritchie, who was interested in seeing a new public library in Jacksboro.
Ritchie came to Jacksboro in 1925 as a new graduate from Teacher’s College in Commerce. She worked as an elementary teacher and was active in the local library club for many years. One of the main resources for education that she felt was needed was a great library.
In 1980, with encouragement from others, Ritchie funded and oversaw the construction of the library.
In 1999, she also funded
an addition to the main library and remodeled the existing building and the children’s library. She believed in the importance of keeping up with the latest technology and encouraged others to do the same.
The Gladys Johnson Ritchie Library is a fullservice library offering many services to its patrons. These services include current magazines, interlibrary loan, DVDs, audio books, internet access, a children’s library, meeting room, summer reading program, genealogy section with old newspapers and census on microfilm, local history and more.
Concerned Citizens of Jack County offers services for seniors and the disabled of the county.
Balanced meals are offered daily at the center along with activities, such as movies, cards, games and more. Concerned Citizens also facilitates the Meals on Wheels program for Jacksboro.
The center also hosts an annual Christmas Craft Fair in November.
Bryson Senior Center welcomes local seniors or anyone else who would like to join them for a monthly luncheon September through May, weather permitting. The lunch is potluck beginning at noon on the first Friday of the
month.
The center is also available for rentals and use for community meetings and gatherings.
Fort Richardson State Park offers Jack County residents and visitors multi-use trails, playgrounds, events, covered pavilions, a swimming beach, a fishing pier, a dining facility and soon, newly renovated campsites.
According to Park Superintendent Robert Frie, the state park, which attracts over 30,000 visitors each year, will debut newly renovated campsites in mid-April.
He said the construction consists of replacing the water and sewage line on the west side of Lost Creek Reservoir near the campsites and shower house area. He added the construction also consisted of upgrading the sewer manhole to current Texas regulations.
“We have 60-plus campsites, all of them have water and electricity and we can accommodate as a big of a rig, motor home, travel trailer as they want to bring in,” Frie said. “We have good space in between the campsites, we are not a quote, unquote RV park. We have got a lot privacy in between the campsites.”
He said in addition to the motorhome campsite, the state park, located 228 State Park Road 61 in Jacksboro, includes the Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway which was opened in 1998 and is connected to more campsites.
“We have a nine-mile multi-use trail (for) hiking, biking, equestrian,” Frie said. “We offer five equestrian campsite close to our dining hall over here with immediate access to the trails, so there’s lots of folks, lots of patrons bringing not only their camping trailers, but their horses.”
He added the trails across the park include a birding trail for bird watchers.
The park superintendent said Fort Richardson State Park is nearly 500 acres large and includes many historical sites.
“We have seven of the original buildings of the historic fort still standing and two reconstructed buildings,” Frie said. “We have a museum and interpretive center, the old post hospital building is probably one the most premier historic sites in the area.”
Entrance to the park costs $3 per adult, 13-years-old and older, while children 12-years-old and younger
are admitted for free. Campsite lodging varies between $10 and $25 a night depending on the site.
The park superintendent said Fort Richardson was established in 1866 and remained in operation until 1878.
“Our claim to fame, Fort Richardson was the Northern most fort in a line of forts that stretched throughout Texas during Westward expansion,” Frie said.
He said Fort Richardson was leased by the federal government post Civil War and Union soldiers helped build and solidify telegraph lines, patrol the area for Native Americans and other potential danger and helped local farmers and ranchers with their cattle and livestock.
According to Frie, Texas Parks and Wildlife took control of the property in 1968 and the facility was opened to the public in 1971.
