B efore 1925, Hutchinson county had fewer than 100 registered voters, but the population began to grow very quickly after the Smith #1 struck oil on January 11, 1926. e well blew in for more 10,000 barrels a day! Oil was discovered in Hutchinson County in 1921, but the Sm ith #1 put the Pa nhandle oil strike - soon to be renamed the Borger oil strike - on the map!
Ace Borger received a telegram from his sister Wilma, who told him “something big was about to happen” here! Wilma was the wife of Gulf Oil Company drilling foreman Carl Horton. As the camp cook for the crews who were drilling wells on the 6666 Ranch in Carson County under Carl’s supervision, Wilma was paying close attention to the action in the new eld and told her brother to “come a-runnin!” He did just that! e camp where she was living and working was a few miles south of where her brother would soon build his new town. Ace Borger quickly came to the Panhandle and brought his partner, Johnny Miller to have a rst-hand look. ey bought 240 acres from ranchers John and Maggie Weatherly for $50 an acre and began selling lots on March 8, 1926. ey made over $100,000.00 that day! eir $12,000 investment yielded over $1,000,000 in less than 6 months - an 8,333% pro t - not bad for a couple of Missouri boys in 1926!
Many men brought their wives and children with them to Boomtown.
Tin, wood, and brick structures were thrown together to accomodate the throngs that made their way to Boomtown. ere was little housing, food, water, electricity or any other of the many conveniences that we take for granted today. Rooms rented for between $50.00 and $100.00 per month. Many rooming houses were occupied by 3 shifts of men - the beds were slept in 24 hours a day. Supplies of all kinds for the oil elds as well as the people who lived in Boomtown had to be shipped in from nearby towns or elsewhere in the United States. e nearest railroad was 25 miles away in Panhandle, Texas, Ace owned the lumber and brick yards and he made another fortune selling building materials for his new town. News of this strike appeared on the front page of the New York Times - above the fold! ousands came to Borger seeking their fortunes, and some found them in one of the over 800 wells that had been drilled by the end of the year.
It only took a couple of years for Boomtown to grow from from a primitive settlement of shanties and shacks to a modern city with brick buildings, water and indoor plumbing, electricity, schools and stores that sold most of what its citizens needed. Borger quickly evolved into a town with plenty of jobs, steady employment and a became a good place to raise a family!
Borger, Texas around the time when lots went on sale. Main street in Boomtown - 90 days old!Thank you for considering Frank Phillips College. Hutchinson Count y occupies land with deep, rich history Spanish explorer Coronado passed this way searching for the lost cities of gold in 1541. Native Americans hunted bu alo on this land on their migrator y jouneys for centuriesuntil pioneers came here and settled on lands the native Americans had always thought of as their own. W hite men fought two battles with Commanche, Kiowa, Arapahoe and Cheyenne warriors near the former Bent St. Vrain & Co. trading post known as Adobe Walls. Ranchers followed shortly thereafter to raise cattle in the vast, seemingly uninhabited plains and with their livestock, also brought irrevocable change to the Texas Panhand le in the late 1800’s.
Oil was discovered here in 1921 and brought even more profound change to this part of the Texas Panhand le Visit the Museum and learn more about these stories and many, many more! Experience the past in our numerous permanent and temporar y exhibits and also in many special and regularly scheduled events.

This photo illustrates the striking collision of two cultures. Boundary lines that were laid in 1876 marked the establishment of Hutchinson County, Texas. The County’s future then appeared to be dependent on ranching and farming. Large, established cattle ranches were numerous. New farming practices were beginning to transform the arid high plains into productive farm land. Agriculture was king.
But in 1923, the Gulf Oil Company drilled its first well in Hutchinson County on the Dial Ranch. The Dial No.1 produced 135 barrels of oil a day. The resulting “Oil Boom” drastically changed the lives of those early settlers. Nothing “around these parts” would ever the same.
The change that came to this isolated region of Texas transformed this quiet, rural region into a noisy frenzy of industrial growth and development. The oil boom made wealthy people of many of the early land holders and made millionaires of many of those flocking to the area to seek their fortunes. Those fortunes helped lay the groundwork for this place we call home.
Borger Independent School District serves approximately 2,500 students on six campuses and encompasses 52 square miles of Hutchinson County in the Panhandle of Texas. The district is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency and the Southern Association of College and Secondary Schools.
