BEAD WORK

March is here! I love this time of year. The weather gets warmer, the days become longer; the air feels fresher and the flowers begin to bloom. Spring — my favorite season — begins this month.
Take a look inside this edition of Paris Life and you'll find spring cleaning tips and local students’ plans for spring break.
As Saint Patrick’s Day approaches on the 17th, some area residents and visitors may test their luck at Choctaw Casino in Grant, Oklahoma, which has a plethora of Irish-themed machines.
I’ll be testing my luck in the garden. Have a great March, and we’ll see you in April.

MartinI don't have a favorite I like what I'm reading in the moment. I love a good sword and sorcery, throw in a couple of dragons and I'm there.
We were here for your grandparents, and we’ll be here for your grandchildren.
When Dee Tabb draws a bead on something she doesn’t miss and the results will be beautiful. The complicated art of beading, whether with a needle or on a bead loom is something she does for pleasure and profit. And as the single mother of three girls, extra income is always welcome.
Dee is an LVN with Lewis Home Health in Bogata. Obviously, that’s a full time job. Dee cares for her patients. She doesn’t just rush in and out, she takes time with them to visit as she takes vitals and checks surgical incisions or recovery processes.
Family is where her heart is centered though. Her girls are Maggie, 23, Dixie 17 and Ronica, 13.
Rodeo, barrel racing and competing for rodeo princess and queen has been a huge part of life for all the girls, as it was for their mom. And of course for grandparents Vicki and
Dan Tabb who have been always been supportive. Perhaps the biggest fan of the Tabb girls is their 101 year old great grandmother, Dixie Stringfellow, after whom Dixie Tabb is named.
There’s a lot of traveling involved in the rodeo life . It doesn’t come cheap and neither do entry fees, horses or the gorgeous outfits that are required for competing in princess or queen contests.
In addition it can require mom to spend a lot of hours sitting on the bleachers of rodeo arenas.
That’s when making money from her beading hobby came along. She took needles, threads and beads and was making a bracelet to pass the time when a passerby admired, then bought it. Dee got busy doing another and sold it, then another.
“I paid for the whole weekend, entry fees, hotel, food and gas, selling those bracelets and anklets and necklaces” she grins.
Where did she first learn beading skills? Her Aunt Tammy Stringfellow Phillips lived in Idaho when Dee was young. They visited often though, and her aunt brought beads and a loom and taught her the process. When she was seven her aunt gave her a loom. She loved beading! As a teen she made trinkets to give away to friends, then went on to other things, as teenagers do.
When Maggie was about seven they were at the renowned Josey Ranch. There was beaded tack for sale and Maggie fell in love with it but the items were too expensive.
Dee went home and dug out her old bead loom and went back to beading. Putting creations on Facebook she began taking orders from there. Bar D asked if she could make something from a specific idea, she did, her artistry became more famous. Soon she was shipping custom made bead work to Canada and Mexico and all over the US. With three young girls involved in school and their hobbies, plus working, life didn’t have too many spare minutes. And those spare minutes were totally taken with fulfilling orders.
“The fun just disappeared, it was hard work and stressful”.
So she put it aside for a while. But one day she was asked to do a pink necklace and she did.
She was back beading. She took her bracelets and necklaces to rodeos and clinics, and would sit there beading. They sold and sold.
Dee swore she wasn’t going to do earrings because they are a whole different thing. Of course those were some of those famous last words.
Dixie ran for Miss Rodeo Texas Teen. Among the competitions was one where she had to have a Wrangler outfit. So her mom did a beaded shirt, jeans and hat. Instead of the usual hat band she beaded the brim. Of course this required matching earrings!
Dee pulled out colors and watched videos. She learned loom, peyote stitch, lazy stitch.
“It was really a challenge” Dee affirms. But the results were spectacular.
And earrings took off big time. Often referred to as “dusters” she creates long, colorful earrings that often utilize Native American designs. Then it was learning to do seasonal earrings with Santa and the grinch, Halloween themes, pumpkins and
where did she first learn beading skills? Her Aunt Tammy Stringfellow Phillips
more.
It all goes to offset the costs of their truly Texas hobby.
She’s taught all three of the girls to bead also. Maggie made those coveted tack sets
They take turns driving and Dee will bead or the girls will while one drives.
Dee is very organized with her bead colors in their tight lidded containers. But there’s always the bead soup bowl. That’s a bowl where if there are 3, 4 or even 10 beads left over they go into the soup bowl. Then, if a project lacks only a few tiny beads to finish she can stir the bead soup and find a few to finish with. Slim, the family cat was sitting on the coffee table, not even that close to the bead soup bowl. But Dee was afraid he might knock the bowl off. So she reached past the cat to move it to safety. The only thing was, the cat wasn’t expecting an arm to come by, leaped straight up and then took off. A rainbow of tiny beads flew in a giant arc all over the carpet! Maggie went for the vacuum but Dee was down picking up as many as possible.
“These things are expensive” she asserted. Still, most of them ended up vacuumed.
The business has grown and she has done Christmas stockings with barrel racers patterned after
actual photos, even one with an NFR bucking horse.
One of the most beautiful creations is “the belt that nearly killed me” which was worn by Miss Idaho as she competed for Miss Rodeo America.
She was supposed to have received the leather belt to work on in plenty of time. Instead it came only a week before it needed to be ready.
The race was on. She only got a few hours sleep a night, it went everywhere with her and she worked on it on lunch breaks, it became a real challenge. But the final creation is absolutely stunning. The finished belt is three inches wide, 27 inches long and the beaded fringe is three feet long! The colors are gorgeous and were made to compliment the dress Miss Idaho was wearing. As the dress skirt swung, the fringe flared even further.
The Tabb’s live at Pine Branch, a tiny community outside of Bogata. The family has one goat, four dogs, and “at least 14 horses”, she laughs.
Dee Tabb has been at Lewis Home health 16 1/2 years and loves it. She crochets as well as beading. She’s talented in more than one way.
She’s an exemplary mother and is probably most excited because her oldest, Maggie, earned her Bachelors in Social Work then married . She and husband Cayden Jones are due this month to have a baby boy. Being a grandmother has her excited and thrilled. The beading may slow down when that baby boy is around to be rocked .
But it’s a sure thing that expressing herself and helping to offset her children’s passion for rodeo won’t stop completely. Bead work is too much a part of her makeup. u
As the cold weather recedes and spring grows ever nearer, a college student’s fancy turns to thoughts of sun and sand, maybe some surf, and certainly some outdoor fun with friends during Spring Break. Maybe...
On a cold and rainy winter day recently, some of the students at Paris Junior College, when asked about their Spring Break plans, were less than enthused about the annual week off from school, this year set for March 13 to 19. Time and money and other plans for their time were the reasons they gave.
“Five days just isn’t enough time to go home,” said Julie Rosas, who hails from California, who said she would be playing third base for the PJC Lady Dragon softball team during this spring break. “During previous spring breaks I did go with family on trips to Niagara Falls and to Disney World, but not this year.
Many of the other student asked said the same thing, such as Rosas’ team mate Abigail Padilla and Barrett Piebock, a center fielder on the men’s baseball team. Both said they had never been on a Spring Break trip, due to years of involvement with sports.
“I’m always playing baseball during the week of spring break,” said Piebock. “I consider no spring break a fair trade for the chance to play baseball all week long.”
Other students who had no plans for a Spring Break trip said they would go home to visit family if they could, but the distance was too far to travel for just the few days they would be free.
Jewelry student Justin Bardzinski said he will stay in Paris during Spring Break, working at a local retail outlet.
“I’m from Michigan,” he said. “I would go home if I could, but I am more of a homebody than I like to admit.”
Beth Phillips, another jewelry student, said her family is in Montana, which she called “too far to go; besides, there’s nothing to do there.”
Yet another jewelry student, Emmanuel Corteza, from Dallas, said he plans to sleep a lot during spring break this year, but if he could he would go to Mexico to visit some of his family there.”
Isiah Moreno from Allen says he also has no plans for this year, but if he had his way, he would spend his time on the beach in Destin, Florida.
Krista Wright, an art major whose family lives in Greenville now after years of traveling around the world with the U.S. military, says she might go visit her family there, but if she had the chance she would go to Japan, a place her family spent several years in, and a place she expressed an affinity for.
Many of the students asked — those who hailed from hometowns much closer to Paris — like Savanah Hall from New Boston, Texas, said on the whole, they had no plans to get away from town on Spring Break, but if they did, it would be to see family. Other students from places like Dallas and Allen, in Texas and Broken Bow, Oklahoma, said the same.
Paris resident Lexxi Mayes said she would use her time off working, waiting on tables at a local restaurant, a place were she and other member of her family have worked for years. Mayes recalled last year’s Spring Break trip to South Padre Island on the Texas coast.
Local Riley Reaves said he would spent the week “chillin’ or catching up on his homework or playing baseball outside” during his break .
Lamar County resident Matthew Winston said he expected to go fishing that week at Pat Mayse Lake.
According to internet sources, one out of every five students who do get away for Spring Break to traditional places like resorts on the Texas or Florida coasts are spending — and borrowing — far more money than they can afford to do so and taking on credit card debt as a result. Getting to where the sun and sand are is just part of the cost; food and lodging at these destinations can be very expensive as well.
Instead of spending money you don’t have on that iconic Spring Break trip, try staying close to home and choosing destinations and activities that can be just as much fun and a lot less expensive. Forget the cliches and try a spring break in one of Texas’ cities, instead. Any of our states major cities — Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, or Houston can offer a huge variety of attractions for Spring Break, from shopping to

food, museums and zoos and cultural activities, historical sites and tourist attractions, not to mention music and dancing and other sorts of nightlife for young people.
If being outdoors is the thing, Texas has some of the best places to spend Spring Break and most are a lot less costly. For sun and surf, there’s Galveston Island, Port Aransas or Boca Chica State Park near Brownsville. For sun and fresh water, visit Lake Texoma, or the popular river getaways of central Texas like the San Marcos River or the Guadalupe River. Or you could
Texas’ State Parks System is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and all of the state’s parks are offering a variety of special programs and events to note this important event.
During this year’s Spring Break — which starts the weekend before March 13 and ends the weekend after March 19 — Cooper Lake State Park, southeast of Paris, has a range of activities and programs available to choose from for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, with plenty of sun and sand and water involved, as well as trees and trails and other outdoor fun.
“Trout fishing will be occurring every day during Spring Break at the park’s trout pond,” said Steve Killian, Complex Supervisor at Cooper Lake State Park. “Hiking, biking, and fishing are the most popular park activities. Cooper Lake State Park is the perfect staycation location.”

What you wear as you walk down the aisle is one of the most significant decisions for your wedding day. Do you envision yourself in a classic bridal gown, or do traditional styles feel confining to you? To help you express your unique personality on your big day, 2023 has plenty of fresh design trends to inspire you.
If you have a playful spirit, a daring cocktail dress provides ease of movement so you can kick up your heels. Bridal designers offer an array of white party minidresses embellished with ornate details befitting the classic bridal gown.
An alternative to classic white, blue is the darling of bridal dress designers for 2023. Look for gowns in shades like periwinkle, ice blue and cornflower.
Picture the classic bridal gown with a flash of femme fatale. An elongating glimpse of the leg can balance the fullness of your dress’s silhouette. Wear a delicate strappy sandal to extend your leg line.
Do you want a look that’s less fairy princess but doesn’t compromise on the drama? Bridal fashion is making huge strides with striking white heirloom separates. These immaculately tailored suit pieces will easily integrate with your post-wedding wardrobe. You may consider adding romantic flourishes like lace, bows or a tulle train. Bridal dress rental is becoming an option for brides who prefer to spend their wedding budget on other aspects of the big day. Ask your local bridal boutique if they offer a rental service.
If you want to express your values in your gown choice, look for a brand that uses sustainable fabrics or repurposed antique lace. Some designers also contribute portions of their earnings to support environmental and social justice efforts.
Visit your local bridal boutique to explore exciting new bridalwear options.
For any bride, the choice of a hairstyle for her wedding day must be dictated by the shape of her face, the style of her dress and, of course, the length of her hair.
The ultimate in romance is a cascade of light and airy curls. Locks of hair can be twisted on the top of the head and caught up with flower petals, bringing to mind the Empress Sissi whose hair was scattered with diamond stars. If the hair is straight, it can be curled sufficiently so its weight doesn’t make the curls droop.
Women with short hair have the advantage of being able to create a femme fatale look. The hair carefully smoothed back and moulded with the help of gel and a comb or wedding pin, offers subtle sophistication. The same effect can be created with an updated version of the loose waves of the 1920’s and 30’s. This hairstyle is distinguished by soft waves set close to the face.
A chignon still has exquisite elegance for the bride with medium length hair. Hair pulled back carefully to end in a cascade of curls or held together with a garland of flowers. An elegant French pleat is another great idea and can be created by smoothing the hair back on both sides of the head. The centre of the pleat is formed by crisscrossing hair pins in a row from the crown downwards. Then the hair is wound around the pins, tucking the ends underneath. Finally lightly comb the front section of hair up and around to merge with the top of the pleat.
Messy braids has a sense of whimsy about them. Perfect for a fantasy or princess themed wedding. Easily accessorized you can add many types of pins, ribbons, flowers, and combs to this look to add that special touch. Different types of braids include Side Swept Fishtail, Waterfall Braids, Half Up/Updo Halo Braid, French Braids, Cornrows, and so much more. u
I'm fast approaching the BIG 5...0….My body continues to give evidence of this fact by an increasingly gray beard, eye sight decreasing, and back aches more frequent. I'm in all reality and honestly, closer to the grave than the cradle. I’m also growing more aware that life is short. For some this may cause fear, but for the Christian believer, there is the promise of a home awaiting in Heaven. In my opinion as a Christian believer, this should bring great joy!!
In Psalms 90:12, the Psalmist said, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” He’s asking God to teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom daily. I’m almost certain that God loved this request. God was asked for wisdom, to show someone just how important their time on earth really is. I'm imagining he happily granted that request because he faithful and loving.
Believers must live intentional lives. Our foundation must be right and be built on the Word of God. We must make Jesus first and king of our life; living by faith. We must seek Him consistently. Jeremiah 29:13 says “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me
with all your heart.” This scripture gives us this promise... If you seek Him you will find Him.
James 4:14 says our life is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Palms 103:15 compares man's days as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes for the wind passes over it, and it's gone and its place remembers it no more. If we took all these verses to heart, we may choose to live life a little differently. Think about this for a moment......There are only two choices in this life...to waste it or to invest it!!
“Life” is like a dollar bill. You can “spend” it anyway you want but you can “only” spend it “once”.
With this knowledge that I have shared with you it is my hope that you will place more importance on the eternal than the temporal and you begin or continue to live an intentional life.u
Although the official first day of spring still will be three days away, there’s no better time to celebrate the coming of a new season than to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, always on March 17.
The day is on a Friday this year to kick off a fun-filled weekend leading up to the Spring Equinox, which this year is at 5:24 p.m. EDT Monday, March 20. This is the exact time the sun is to cross from north to south the celestial equator - an imaginary line in the sky above Earth’s equator.
What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day but with a cup of Irish coffee, or by visiting one of the city’s restaurants or bars for a
mug of green beer or glass of Irish whiskey. Or, head up 22 miles north of Paris on U.S. 271 to the Choctaw Casino and Resort in Grant, Oklahoma, to celebrate “the Luck of the Irish.”
There, players find a variety of slot machines and table games to see if lady luck might be riding close by. The casino’s River Bar & Grill will be offering green beer in celebration. There’s just something appealing about turning everything green on the Irish holiday, and beer just happens to lend itself to experimentation.
“It’s just a light colored tap beer and we add a drop of green food coloring to it and serve it in a nice plastic cup that you can walk around the casino with,” casino marketing director Kenneth Eisele said of the usual way bartenders concoct green beer.
On the floor of the casino, players could win up to $10,000 cash.
“We have our $252,000 Golden Giveaway promotion going on Fridays and Saturdays in March,” Eisele said. “You can win up to $10,000 that evening.”
Choctaw Casino-Grant is one of seven casinos operated by the Choctaw Nation to include those in Durant, Idabel, McAlister, Broken Bow, Stringtown and Pocola with an eighth being built in Hochatown. The Grant location first began operations at the nearby Choctaw Travel Plaza more than 20 years ago. It then expanded into portable buildings before constructing the facility that now houses the Stage 271 Entertainment Center. Choctaw CasinoGrant opened a 60-room hotel and casino in July 2009, and in 2017 added another 92 rooms and upgraded its pool with cabanas, a waterfall, bar and entertainment area. The casino, which employs 500 people, features several restaurants including the Chop House, the River Bar & Grill, The Cove and Chili’s Bar and u Grill
Does the cold winter make you dream of a sunny getaway? These five decorating tips will make you want to throw on a bathing suit, sandals and sarong despite the sub-zero temperatures.
1. Choose evocative materials and textiles. Transport yourself to a picturesque fishing town on the coast by decorating your space with furniture and rugs made of materials like rattan, driftwood, linen and bamboo.
2. Dress your walls and windows in summer colors. Purchase artwork and window coverings in tropical colors like pure white, azure blue, bright yellow, fuchsia pink, emerald green and turquoise.
3. Use outdoor furniture in your home. Turn your home into a beachside resort with outdoor lounge chairs, picnic tables and hammocks. You can also use your prettiest beach towels as throws.
4. Accessorize your space. Utilize oceaninspired accent pieces like buoys, fins, surfboards, anchors, lobster cages and seashells to create a vacation-like atmosphere.
5. Arrange a variety of plants. Create a beachy vibe with natural or artificial tropical plants and flowers like palms, cacti and hibis cus. Arrange a basket of ex otic fruits as a centerpiece.
Housing economists believe that prices will fall, but it will not be what it was back in 2005 and 2007. The average homeowner is different now than they were then.
Today, the average homeowner has a far better financial profile. They often have very good credit, a large amount of equity in their home, and a fixed rate below 5%. The likelihood that we would experience the same foreclosure crisis is incredibly unlikely.
What Does This Mean?
We are seeing signs of a market looking to stabilize, but experts advise us to remain cautious. The good news is that if you are looking to buy or sell a home, Texas continues to provide ample opportunity. Interest rates have the potential to drop; however, it may continue to rise for sometime. Luckily, a market crash seems rather unlikely and a foreclosure crisis does not appear to be on the horizon.
Need help?
Deciding to sell or purchase a home is a very personal decision. Let’s chat to discuss your real estate questions and ensure you have the information you deserve.
As spring rolls around our senses are enticed by that cool weather and fresh air. At home, this means it's time to open those windows and commence our annual cleaning and organization.
For the first step, we end up creating a checklist of the
chores and the supplies we deem necessary for a tidy home.
As we begin those tedious tasks, we often find that these simple lists end up taking more time and result in procrastination.
What if we don't have those gimmicky cleaners to get that job done? We get in our ve -
hicles and take time away to go buy, buy, buy!
Obscurely many of us already have everything we will need in our kitchen cupboard.
All we will ever need is vinegar, baking soda, lemon, salt, and olive oil.
Here's a list of what they are commonly used for.

A lot of gaming fans got incredibly excited when this game was announced and since then we have learned so much more. The developers have masterfully brought us new ways to attack zombies. With an innovated next gen procedural gore system called F.L.E.S.H. which stands for "Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids" players can damage enemies in realistic ways; knives slicing through clothes and flesh, and blunt weapons like bats crushing the body in anatomically correct ways. "Dead Island 2" has also hinted at a large range of zombie variety. So get yourselves ready for the onslaught in Los Angeles this April.

1 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 ½ tablespoons minced shallots.
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, shallots, salt and pepper. Whisking constantly, slowly add the oil in a steady stream.

ADHD- Attention-Deficit /Hyperactivity-Disorder is a very common mental disorder found in children and adults in which they are distracted by not being able to focus on the task in front of them. They are also hyperactive and act in the moment without giving much thought.
Children show signs of ADHD much earlier in life compared to adults as their hyperactivity and inattention are noticeably greater than expected at their age which can cause problems at home , at school or in their relationship with friends.
ADHD can be diagnosed into 3 types. 1) Inattentive Type. 2) Hyperactive/Impulsive Type. 3) Or a Combination of both.
Inattentive Type: A child diagnosed with this type of ADHD suffers from paying close atten tion to details and hence makes careless mistakes. Has problems staying focused on tasks or has difficulty paying attention during lectures, conversations or long reading. Will not follow through with instructions. Has problems with time management and does not know how to organize work to meet deadlines. A Teen suffering from ADHD often loses things needed for daily tasks like keys, wallet, cell phone and eye glasses. Forgets daily chores like running errands. Similarly adults may forget to return phone calls, pay bills and keep appointments.
Hyperactive/Impulsive Type: In this type of ADHD a child will not be able to stay seated for long. Will always be on the go. Will talk too much. Is likely to blurt out an answer before a ques tion has been asked. Has difficulty waiting in line for his turn. Interrupts and intrudes on others or cuts conversations, games or activities. Runs around and climbs wherever it is inappropriate.
The sad news is, that there is no lab test yet invented to diagnose ADHD. Therefore, diagnosis is generally based out of information provided by parents or teachers by filling out checklists provided during a medical evaluation. Scientists have not yet found a cure for ADHD either. However, evidence suggests that ADHD is passed on through genes in a family.
ADHD in Adults:
ADHD in an adult manifests in the following ways; becoming frustrated easily. Losing temper quickly, having low tolerance for stress, making hasty decisions, interrupting conversations, receiving several traffic citations or causing road accidents and changing personal relationships and jobs frequently.
Are boys diagnosed with ADHD more than girls?
This is not completely accurate. Girls go undiagnosed for ADHD because they are less disruptive as children than boys and therefore their symptoms may not appear unmanageable until they grow older. Moreover, girls show their symptoms of ADHD in less obvious ways as being inattentive. Therefore, more girls are being diagnosed with ADHD today as much as boys.
Children with ADHD can qualify for special education under the individuals with disabilities act or for a section 504 plan under the rehabilitation Act of 1973. Children with ADHD can also benefit from alternative teaching techniques and modified curriculum.
Adults with ADHD are treated with medications, psychotherapy or behavior management strategies to minimize distractions and incorporate structure and organization into their schedules with the support of family members.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) did a large treatment study in 1992 called the MultiModel Treatment Study Of Children with ADHD. Data from this 14-month study showed that stimulant medication is most effective in treating the symptoms of ADHD, as long as it is administered in doses adjusted for each child’s individual response either alone or in combination with behavioral therapy.
