The longleaf pine forests that once covered much of Alabama provided ample resources for the establishment and growth of Covington County.
Napoleon B. Dixon began sawmill operations on Blue Creek in the 1880's and was the first to use conservation measures when cutting the timber. Timber bi-products, like turpentine and pitch, promoted economic development and industrial expansion. Like their father, Dixon's sons Charles and Solon continued in timber as well as the turpentine business. Charles personally oversaw the planting of more than 40 million trees in his lifetime. In 1980, Solon gifted 5,300 acres and the family home to his alma mater, Auburn University. The Solon Dixon Forestry Center is the site of the required summer camp practicum for all students entering the School of Forestry and Wildlife.
I started off 2022 with fresh eyes and big dreams and I am so proud of all we were able to accomplish. We kicked off last year’s annual banquet with a visit from Governor Kay Ivey, brought the chamber back into full swing with networking opportunities including our Chamber Connection Breakfasts, Business After Hours, and Lunch and Learns. We held The Legislative Luncheon at PowerSouth, The Chamber Golf Classic at the Andalusia Country Club, and our annual Veteran and Christmas Parades.
We had an amazing July Jamz summer concert series and having Lee Greenwood perform for our last concert was truly the icing on the cake. Wow, what an awesome performance he gave and what a joy for all of us to have him come to Andalusia. It was the perfect way to honor our veterans to hear Mr. Greenwood perform I’m Proud to be an American with The Vietnam Travelling Memorial Wall in the background. To quote Mr. Lee Greenwood himself, “Are you loving this night? We love this too. This is a beautiful slice of America.” We are all so blessed to call this beautiful town our home.

a German immigrant, John G. Scherf came to Andalusia in 1919 as Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and eventually served 16 years as Mayor. On a quest to build the town with industry, he chartered the Andala Company, manufacturing underwear, work shirts and pants for Sears, Roebuck. Providing much needed jobs, especially for women, this greatly improved the quality of life for residents. Only 6 years later, Alatex was founded becoming the main employer for Covington County for many years with nearly 3,000 employees at times.

Christmas in Candyland 2022 brought in huge crowds throughout the season, and we welcomed visitors from all over. The addition of our new Meredith’s Miracles “Christmas in Candyland” show, Santa’s Sleigh, The Cocoa Ball Pit, and more snow than ever contributed to the record numbers in attendance. We have already begun planning for 2023 Christmas in Candyland celebrating the 10th anniversary of the event!
I am excited to see the progression of our community with the continuation of our downtown revitalization. I wholehearted believe that Andalusia is the absolute best place to live, and we have so many successes to be proud of.
Our Mission Statement at the chamber is:
Through collaborative leadership, The Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce promotes business relations and creates opportunities for economic prosperity and quality living in Andalusia, Alabama.
We will continue to do our part to project positivity, celebrate success and to support our fellow friends and businesspeople.

Production began to change in the late 70’s as textile work was introduced to third world countries finally shuttering Alatex in 1992. However, a former Alatex employee, James Henderson began a sewing equipment supply company in 1968. Today, Henderson Sewing remains in Covington County and has grown to a global multi-million dollar business. 8 1 2

After the Creek Indian War of 1812, Andrew Jackson traveled through this area marching troops in route to New Orleans marking a “Three-Notch trail” through this wilderness. This became a trading route to the Indians and a route for settlers moving in from Georgia and the Eastern states in to the interior of Alabama. Three Notch Street is named to commemorate the trail.

Andalusia begins to shift from an agrarian society to one that embraced Industrial development. Newcomers brought new businesses like hotels, furniture stores, and a cotton gin. Covington Casket is established in 1924 specializing in custom built hardwood caskets. Andalusia's tallest building was commissioned by the First National Bank to facilitate business in the growing town. The six-story building was designed by architect Frank Lockwood, who also designed the Covington County Courthouse. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
Andalusia’s first airport was built in the 1930’s and was located just outside of town, on the East side of the Florala HWY. Jess Dixon was one of the early pioneers of airplanes and was instrumental in helping to get the Airport built. Our current airport, South Alabama Regional, was founded in 1970 and initiated a Defense Energy Supply contract since 1992, generating a major source of income for the airport and involves refueling Army, and Navy/Marine Helicopters Daily.
The first newspaper was published in Andalusia, The Covington Times.

Following the Spanish Influence, likely derived from trading in Pensacola, the new county seat, Andalusia, was laid out, surveyed and designed in a square around a plaza. By 1850, the city was well on its way with 75 residents. The present-day Court House is the 4th courthouse to be erected in this square. The first two consumed by fire and the third torn down after WWI. Businesses included stables, saloons, dry goods stores, but most residents relied on farming to survive.
Covington County began its’ real growth in when the Central of Georgia extended its line to Andalusia and the L & N Railroad ran a line through Andalusia. Recognizing a business opportunity in the large quantity of virgin longleaf pine timberland in the area, E.L. More, president of the A&F Division of the L&N Railroad, purchased a half-interest in a small mill located on Buck Creek near River Falls. From this beginning until its closure following the disastrous flood of 1929, the Horse Shoe Lumber Company was one of the largest, most modern sawmills of its time.
James Prestwood published “The Legend of Andalusia” in 1989 documenting the following story as told by his grandfather, Aus Prestwood. A Spanish soldier riding a white stallion was captured by Creek Warriors. The Creeks, enamored with the horse, took turns riding him and wanted to know where he came from. The soldier told them his name was “Destinado” and he came from a providence in Spain known as Andalucía. They carved the words “Destinado” and “Andalusia” into a nearby Poplar Tree near the present-day Covington County Court House.

The City of Andalusia is pleased to partner with the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce to enhance the quality of life for our citizens and neighbors.
In 2022, we achieved a big goal for our community when we joined Michael and Shuan Jackson and their families in an
nouncing plans for five national retailers to locate in the Shoppes of Covington, formerly known as the Covington Mall.
Five Below and Harbor Freight have already opened their doors, and will soon be followed by Big Lots, Bealls Outlet and Marshalls. These are national retailers who analyze markets meticulously before agreeing to open a store. What they know about Andalusia and the people who work and shop here is that we have room in our retail market for expansion, and that thousands of potential customers drive past the entrance to the Shoppes of Covington every single day.
We have seen two major milestones in our efforts to preserve our history and bring our downtown back to life. Draftstone Properties completed its renovation of the old Opera House in 2022, and moved both retail and residential tenants into the property. In the first month of 2023, CDG moved into its beautiful new home in the upper floor of the Prestwood Building on the Court Square. Construction continues on that property, and there will soon be two additional businesses on the ground floor.
We are very close to finalizing a partnership that will convert the Timmerman Building, also known as the First National Bank Building, into a boutique hotel, and we continue to meet each week with prospects interested in Andalusia’s downtown.
In the summer of 2022, we joined with the Covington Veterans Foundation to host the Vietnam Travelling Memorial Wall, and experienced a magical night when Lee Greenwood came to July Jamz and sang “God Bless the USA” in the shadow of The Wall.
It was a banner year for our school system, which earned an “A” on its report card. We will always remember 2022 as the year the Bulldogs won the 4A State Championship, and the AHS cheerleaders also brought home a state award.
The crowds at Candyland were significantly larger than the year before, and we are already hard at work with the Chamber to make 2023 – the 10th anniversary of the event - our best year yet.
We appreciate the Chamber of Commerce and all of its members for its support in these endeavors.

In 1910, Homer Gantt built the first electric generating facility in Covington County, a wooden dam spanning the Conecuh River. A second plant, Point A Dam, comes on line in 1924. After the flood of 1929, they were rebuilt and run by the Alabama Water Service Company, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration later that year. In 1941, Alabama Electric Cooperative (AEC) was organized and in 1944 Covington Electric Cooperative (CEC) was founded. AEC bought the generation, transmission and distribution properties of the Alabama Water Service Company and CEC took over the distribution facilities.
Electricity didn’t change a thing, it changed everything!
With no access to electricity, farm labor was backbreaking and dangerous. No electric motors or grinders for preparing feed and unloading crops, woodburning stoves prepared meals, water was handpumped from a well, baths were taken in galvanized tubs and outhouses stood behind very country house. AEC changed its name to PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in 2008. These cooperatives not only improve the quality of life for the citizens they serve, they cultivated our communities.

Governor Lurleen Burns Wallace made the official announcement that a new Junior College would be located in Andalusia on March 15, 1968. Under the direction of President William H. McWhorter, the campus encompassed 9 buildings with beautiful landscaping, walking/fitness trails, a wellequipped fitness center, lighted tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, the Evans Barnes Golf Course, and the City of Andalusia Dream Park. The Martha and Solon Dixon Center for the Performing arts was dedicated in 1982. A complete renovation and refurbishing was led by President Seth Hammett in 1991, and a new 17 acre campus was added in Greenville, Alabama. In 2003, LBW Junior College and MacArthur State Technical College merged under the direction of President Dr. Ed Meadows. In 2013, under the direction of President Dr. Herbert H. J. Riedel, Saints Hall was constructed adding on-campus housing for students.
LBW Community College is one of the 24 member colleges of the Alabama Community College System, and is a leading resource for providing higher education and economic development in Covington County and the State.

The Covington County Hospital, organized in 1918, served as a necessitated medical installation for Andalusia and surrounding communities and later was transformed into a school for training nurses. In 1966, a community took on the extraordinary task to raise money to build a muchneeded new hospital. Organizers planned to speak with every employee of every business and industry and collectively, local residents across the economic spectrum pledged over a three-year period a sum of $490,000 for the effort, the equivalent of $3.8 million in today’s dollars. Later, the funds were supplemented with federal Hill-Burton funds. But the vision, even then, was that Andalusia’s hospital would be a regional facility that would attract specialists and serve a larger geographical area. Today, we still reap the benefits of their foresight. In 2016, Andalusia Regional Hospital changed its name to Andalusia Health to reflect its evolution from a community hospital to a regional healthcare leader.

Dr. Charles Tomberlin originated an idea for an Andalusia Rotary Club fundraiser as a Bicentennial Celebration with a Domino Tournament. The event was so successful the club decided to host the tournament annually. It was promoted as a State event and entries came from all over the state and beyond. The efforts of a large-scale push for downtown redevelopment in Andalusia by Mayor Earl Johnson bears fruit with the opening of Big Mike’s Steakhouse in the old Andala building followed by a renovation of the Clark Theater, once Martin Theater. This catalyst for change sparked the opening and renovation of several other downtown re-developments. Private investments in the Covington Mall and other retail spaces, housing developments, medical office space, and fast casual dining have the City of Andalusia poised for growth in the next decade.

Covington County Commission
Greg White, Chairman
We who call Covington County home are so fortunate. As the entire world has – for the past three years – struggled with a pandemic, and the resulting decline in the world economy, including job losses, and business closings, and unending months of distance learning, and rising crime rates; we have experienced low unemployment, vibrant school environments for our kids, steady growth in local economic measures, and stable local businesses.
It is my privilege as a local elected official to spend many hours each month discussing what we can do to build upon our successes, and to better provide for our citizens and local businesses. As I assess what we as a county have that makes us competitive and a desirable place in which to rear our families, I find that our arts, schools, recreation and leisure opportunities, along with our church and civic life all play vital roles.
Interestingly, all of those things that are important are dependent upon the commitment and continued investments of our local business community. Whether through your employees volunteering, or through your donations to further the mission of our local nonprofits, or your leadership in your local church or civic clubs, our businesses and their employees make our communities great! We cannot say thank you enough.
Covington County is a progressive rural county with a relatively small population (37,500). We are unwilling to let our small size or our rural location limit our efforts at bringing new opportunity to our citizens – the things that enhance our quality of life.
Speaking of quality of life, Covington County is blessed with natural resources — from Conecuh National Forest; to lakes such as Gantt, Point A, Frank Jackson, and Lake Jackson; to thousands of acres of forested hunting lands. Moreover, we offer camping and trails and skiing and boating – activities that are attractive to folks of all ages.
Our county provides organized recreational opportunities that have become so important to our families, through robust recreation ball programs and other options. We are home to the Covington Center Arena, which is proud to host the annual Alabama High School Rodeo Association State Finals, and Alabama Junior Rodeo State Finals, along with numerous other equine and non-equine events.
The greatest thing about Covington County (even more than all the things mentioned above) is her people. Thanks to all of you for making Covington County a great place to call home. And thanks for allowing us – your Commission – to work alongside you as we seek to enhance the quality of life for all of us.
Gregory B. White, Chairman Covington County Commission

Andalusia City Schools is continually improving and achieving distinction and that is especially evident in the success that we repeatedly experience in our school system. We received a score of 91 and ranked 14th out of 145 statewide for school district report card grades during the 2021-2022 school year. In extracurricular activities, our football team and our cheerleaders won 4A state championships. Our band has received numerous superior ratings. We have teachers that have won “Teacher of the Year” and this year is no exception.
I am thrilled with our results especially this last year. Our Admin-
istrators, Teachers, Coaches, and Support Staff are second to none. The hard work and dedication they give our students on a day to day basis is apparent in our student’s successes. The quality of instruction in this district has never been higher. Our staff makes sure our students have the experience they deserve from Andalusia City Schools. The drive, passion, and love for our students and their job makes my job easier and I am beyond thankful to be the Superintendent of Andalusia City Schools.

Christmas in Candyland 2023 marks the event’s 10th anniversary of bringing holiday fun for visitors from near and far. The annual event was established in 2014 and since then has gained national recognition as a wonderful holiday getaway event.
Since its beginning, Candyland has continued to expand to include ice skating, train rides, snow tubing, and an ever-growing number of custom-built cottages, sponsored by local businesses. The village of child-sized, imaginative play cottages are built especially for children and include a variety of themes. Find a second cottage village at Springdale on Ice.
Another popular aspect of Candyland is the Snow Show. The experience lasts about 30 minutes with snow machines blasting out authentic looking snowflakes, giving the illusion of a blizzard.
The City of Andalusia plays a big role in creating the magic of Candyland and there are many others who volunteer their time and talents. The community pride is especially evident with this event. Candyland will continue to grow and expand, making it something that all ages can enjoy and create lasting memories with their families.
In 2020, almost 70,000 people visited Candyland, according to NaviRetail.

In 2022, the event coincided with the arrival and display of the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall and a free concert by Grammy-award winning artist Lee Greenwood.
Each night of the event features and opening act and headline performer featuring an eclectic mix of musical genres to enjoy.
Children visiting July Jamz will have a blast in the Foam Frenzy
machine that will surround them in a fun-filled sea of foam.
The event also features a fireworks display.
The chamber is excited to partner with the Covington Veterans Foundation and the City of Andalusia to tie the final July Jamz performance with the arrival of the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall.
Music fans are encouraged to bring their blankets, coolers and lawn chairs and get ready for the Jamz! The event is free to enter. Vendors are available to provide food and beverages.

Large Business of the Year: CCB Community Bank
Celebrating 75 years in business in Andalusia, is this year’s Large Business of the Year Award winner, CCB Community Bank.
They opened their doors in 1947 on the court square in Andalusia before moving to its current location on S. Three Notch Street. CCB has led the way with many banking firsts in the community, including an auto window for drive-up banking, a 24-hour banking mail slot, statement check imaging, driv- thru lanes and mobile banking. They encourage their employees to find a passion and to get involved with local community organizations. Get involved, give back, be a part of the community ... that’s what CCB is all about.
CCB just opened its fifth location in 2022, located in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
Their headquarters in Andalusia experienced a good problem of outgrowing their current space which led to the recent purchase of the old BB&T building that was vacant, allowing the bank to expand their operations department. The building will undergo a complete remodel and they plan to move into the new building later in 2023. Southern National Corporation Chairman
John Vick said, “The key to our success has been dedicated employees and loyal customers who appreciate the personal touch.”
“The things we do throughout the community have been important, and the community in turn has supported us as its bank through the good time and the bad.” Said CEO Michael Andrews.
The chamber could not agree more. It is because of the generosity of CCB Community Bank that we were able to have Lee Greenwood perform at this past year’s July Jamz. CCB has also sponsored the Chamber Banquet, Chamber Golf Classic, Christmas in Candyland, and participated in both the Veterans and Christmas parades.
Business of the Year-Community Service Award: Andalusia Health
Community service and civic participation plays such a vital role in Andalusia’s strength and identity. The Chamber’s Business of the Year Community Service Award honors a member whose service positively impacts the community and inspires those around them to act, too.

every game day!
Andalusia Health hosted a Community Lunch & Learn during Breast Cancer Awareness Day during the month of October, educating more about the importance about women’s wellness checks and their low-cost screening availability. They also joined in on the trick or treating fun for the community.
During Christmas, they were able to bless 20 children through
Community Christmas, had their own Cookies with Santa event that was open to all patients and their families and held a Christmas wreath decorating competition donating all the wreaths to the residents at Andalusia Manor.
The hospital has donated to countless local charitable organizations, including the Andalusia Animal Shelter, Andalusia Area Humane Society, the Full
Tummy Project, held supply drives for the Adult Activity Center, and the local Food Bank.
The have sponsored Meredith’s Miracles, donated to the Andalusia Ballet, Andalusia Office Professional Association, LBWCC, Andalusia City and Covington County Schools through sports teams, programs, physicals, The Pilot Club, The Rotary Club, and the Kiwanis Club.

Distinguished Service Award: Tony Meeks
After years of working out of town, Tony Meeks took a chance on starting his own small business in 2015. At that time, he began volunteering as a coach with his son’s recreation ball team. Not long after, he saw a need for a place for children to practice indoors with batting cages and pitching lanes. With that thought in mind, he and a few other families formed an indoor facility that is now known as Allstar Athletics. After seeing the unlimited potential in the young athletes in and around our community, he formed a small travel baseball team.
Soon, more families and athletes became interested and with the idea of expanding on what his facility could offer to the public, he began to offer memberships. Soon numerous coaches, trainers and former baseball players were recruited to offer more advanced training. Since then, Allstar Athletics has grown to have six competitive travel
ball teams and one of the largest indoor batting and pitching facility in south Alabama. Now over 120 families are members of Allstar Athletics with nearly 100 percent of the profits going back into the facility to make updates and add more equipment each year.
Not only does he still operate a fulltime appliance business along with Allstar Athletics, but he still helps coach with a few of the travel ball teams.
His volunteer work doesn’t stop with baseball, he is also involved with the high school Diamond Club and spends every Friday night during football season volunteering to record games for the high school football team.
Tony is always first to give his time to help with any family in need or at any athletic or school event. His vision has greatly improved youth sports in the community and provided a safe place for families and athletes to gather and train.
Chamber President’s Award: Roger Powell
Roger Powell, an Andalusia native, is a 1972 graduate of Andalusia High School. He holds a B.S. in the Social Sciences and an M.S. in Counseling and Human Development from Troy State University. When the State of Alabama mandated the hiring of juvenile probation officers in each county in 1975, Roger became the first JPO in Covington County and was instrumental in developing the Youth Services division of the District Court. In 1988, he was elected to the position of Circuit Clerk, a post he held until his retirement in 2013.
Roger is a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where he is an ordained deacon and elder, a member of the choir, and involved with a number of committees both past and present. For the past 10 years, he has been active with the church’s Love Thy Neighbor Meal ministry that provides free hot meals twice each month to anyone, regardless of standing.
His passion for the visual and performing arts is evident in his activities in those areas. He is a watercolor artist who specializes in “architectural portraits” of homes, businesses, churches, etc. He enjoys performing on stage, working backstage, and sitting in the audience. He has been involved with Red
Garter Revue, Saints on Stage, Andalusia Ballet, LBW’s Music and Drama Department, Act I, Junior Miss and Distinguished Young Women, in a variety of roles and characters, such as PeeWee Herman, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Clinton, Mr. Rogers, Cinderella’s ugly step-sister, and the Grinch, to name a few. He has performed in shows such as “The Wizard of Oz,” “Oliver,” and “The Diary of Anne Frank,” and has directed
a number of stage productions including “Annie,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Murders in the Heir,” and “Twelve Angry Jurors.”
In 2021, Roger founded ReAct Theatre & Arts, a community theatre and arts program. He is proud to have produced the premier performance of “Ladies of the Jury,” as well as “Charlotte’s Web,” two art exhibits, and a narrated mural walk during the first year of ReAct.
Through the years, he has been active in the community and beyond having served on the boards of Southeast Alabama Youth Services, the Presbyterian Home for Children, Andalusia Ballet, Lower Alabama Arts Coalition, and Angel of Hope. He is also active as a presenter for the Covington County Program of Leadership, the City of Andalusia Ambassador Program, and as a volunteer in Christmas programs at Andalusia Elementary where his wife, Cathy, is the music and art teacher.
Roger is married to the former Cathy Powell of Greenville and they are the proud parents of two daughters, one son-in-law, and one future son-in-law, Allyn and Hank Walters of Enterprise, and Lauren Powell and fiancé John Harris, both of Birmingham.

Brianna is in her fourth year as a K-6 physical education teacher at AES and is a coach for the Andalusia Junior High School girls’ basketball team. Over the past two summers, she has worked at a local community center’s summer program and at AES’ summer math camp. She is a devotion leader at a church her father pastors and films the church’s live stream.
After she received her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she completed her master’s in Kinesiology from Auburn University at Montgomery. She is currently enrolled at the University of West Alabama pursuing an Education Specialist degree in the Teacher Leader program.

The AACC’s Teacher of the Year Award is open to educators from any Andalusia City or Covington County school. As this year’s Teacher of the Year, Brianna receives a $500 contribution toward educational materials and a plaque. She will be recognized at the chamber’s annual meeting and the school’s award’s program.
“Based on her commitment to education and love for children, she has earned the respect of AES’s faculty, staff, students, and parents. As principal of AES, I have worked closely with Ms. Rudolph for four years. Her leadership skills, intellectual pursuits and unyielding passion to never stop learning along with her strong commitment to improving the lives of her students certainly has gained the attention of her colleagues and others within the community,” Brenda Johnson said.
Student of the Year: Kayley Peebles

Kayley is among the top students in her class while also participating in numerous extracurricular activities and serves the community through her volunteer efforts.

Arts & Entertainment
The arts abound in Andalusia!
There are dance schools and professional performances of ballet and modern dance. Andalusia Ballet, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2023, brings the ballet to the city with its annual production of “The Nutcracker” and other
productions throughout the year.
The Lower Alabama Arts Coalition offers classes for all ages in the visual and performing arts, and showcases the work of local artists.
The Covington Arts Council brings theater and musical performances to
the local stage several times each year. ReAct Theatre and Arts brings community theatre to local stages with multiple productions each year.
And for movie buffs, the restored Clark Theatre on the square features the latest movies in three theaters.
Outdoor Recreation
Andalusia and Covington County are home to many outdoor recreation opportunities, from the Conecuh National Forest, which is home to Blue Lake and Open Pond, to Gantt Lake and Point A. Campgrounds for those who enjoy primitive camping or “glamping” are available lake-front, or in the woods, and the City of Andalusia boasts many parks.
For those who enjoy swinging their clubs, there are two golfing opportunities inside the city limits. Fishing and hunting are popular outdoor activities at the lakes and forests located within Covington County.
City recreation areas and parks provide an assortment of activities for people of all ages. Johnson Park features baseball fields and a splash pad. There is a playground and walking trail at Robinson Park. The City of Andalusia is also in the early stages of creating a new park that will feature an ampitheather, walking and biking trails, and more!
Covington County is also home to Frank Jackson State Park in Opp and Lake Jackson in Florala.

Education & Learning
The City of Andalusia boasts a city school system, with three schools — Andalusia Elementary, Andalusia Junior High School and Andalusia High School — all of which offer superb educational opportunities for the children of this community.
The Andalusia School System ranks among the top in the state, having earned a grade of 91, based on the Department of Education’s school grading system, placing it 14th overall in the state.
The city and the school system joined hands to provide a top-notch approach to after-school learning through its APPLE program, held each afternoon at the Woodson Learning Center.
The Andalusia City Schools system also has made a huge commitment to technology, and is moving toward having access to an electronic device for every student.
The city school system is also committed to extracurricular and sports opportunities for students. In 2022, the Andalusia Bulldogs captured the 4A state football championship and the varsity cheer team also claimed a state title.
Andalusia is also home to Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, a two-year college. There are two other school systems in the county — Covington County School System and Opp City Schools.
LBW Community College exemplifies the two-year college mission of commitment to excellence in teaching and service and is a leader in education and workforce development. LBW offers a multitude of opportunities and is known for outstanding academic and technical programs, as well as excellent student services.

Statewide Business Awards
Andalusia’s Town and Country Boutique and Taylor Linen Services were each named a finalist in the Alabama Small Business of the Year Awards upon being nominated by the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce.
Finalists were selected from nominations made by local Alabama chambers of commerce. Alabama chambers had the opportunity to nominate one member small business for each award category. Awards will be presented in the following categories: emerging business (in business fewer than 5 years), small business 1-10 employees, small business 11-50 employees, or small business 51-100 employees.
Merle Jones opened the doors of Town and Country on the square in Andalusia in 1951. After about a decade, they moved down South Three Notch Street to the former Foreman’s Funeral Home or the “green house” as everyone called it. Mrs. Jones’s daughter Pat Thompson continued to own and manage the store until approximately 2010 when it was purchased by a second owner. She eventually moved out to the western bypass and formed the Trio shopping center with two other local merchants.
Terri Proctor purchased the shop in the summer of 2020 and immediately got involved with the City of Andalusia in working towards moving Town and Country back to downtown Andalusia. The shop is scheduled to return to downtown Andalusia this spring in the Prestwood Building, just steps from its original location in 1951.
“We were nominated by the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce to represent Andalusia in the category of small businesses with one to 10 employees. I currently have four employees working for me at the shop. I worked with Laura Wells at the Chamber to compile a list of projects I
have been involved in with our community. These awards are based on civic involvement,” Proctor said.
Presented annually by the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama (CCAA) and the Business Council of Alabama (BCA), the awards recognize businesses of merit based on a variety of civic endeavors, business success, and community involvement.
Proctor was contacted by Paige Hutto with the CCAA about Town and Country being chosen as a finalist.
“I am excited to represent my hometown and this amazing and supportive community. We have something special here in Andalusia, and I look forward to taking a little bit of our corner of the state to the awards ceremony in November,” she said.
Taylor Linen Services first opened its doors in Andalusia in 1997.
“It began with a commitment to be the best linen and uniform provider in our market and a business with a safe and desirable work environment. Andalusia has a strong pro-business city government. We also have great public schools that help attract employees with young families to town,” said office manager Katherine Jones. “We are looking forward to representing our employees and our town at the state’s Chamber banquet.”
Jones added that this rec-
ognition is exciting for the company’s entire team.
“What we do every day is long, hard, hot hours and often not the first industry people think of. While we work hard every day to provide a superior product and service for each of our customers, we also work equally hard to make Taylor Linen Services a business where people are proud to say they work.”
According to Jones, there are several benefits of working in a family-run business.
“It is much easier for all employees to be an on the field teammate not just a benchwarmer. We all know each other personally, and when your employer knows you as a friend, they don’t call it a day and leave you there working. They stay and help you also get finished. While the business name represents one family
on our team, we have many families with multiple family members working here. At one time, we counted as many as eight families with two to five members of their individual family currently working at Taylor Linen Services,” she said.
All award finalists were honored at The BCA/CCAA Partnership Annual Meeting last November in Birmingham. Three winners (Gold, Silver and Bronze) were awarded in each of the four categories. Each category was represented by 10 finalists across the state. Although Town and Country and Taylor Linen Services were not selected as winners, each business continues to be part of Andalusia and its rich history. The Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce is grateful to have submitted these two businesses for recognition on a statewide level.
