I can’t believe it’s already April. It feels like 2023 has just begun, but now we’ve settled into spring, and it feels like if I blink too long, it’ll be summer.
I’ve said it before, but I love spring. Once the cold weather goes away, I become a busy bee around the house. The spring cleaning bug bites me, and I’m decluttering and reorganizing. I'm gardening and landscaping.
One of my favorite parts of this time of the year is Easter. The bright colors, the festivities, the fellowship and togetherness — I love it all.
The historic Sam Bell Maxey House will be hosting its egg hunt again this year. It’s a favorite for Parisians.
Speaking of historic, take a look inside this edition of Paris Life, and you'll see Sammie Hamm, who takes classic cars and restores them to their former glory.
This year is going by fast. See you next month.

Stand Up Comedy Boot Camp
Tower City Comedy

Whether you've bucket listed the idea of trying stand up comedy, or dabbled at an open mic, our Stand Up Comedy Boot Camp course will help you find and develop yourself as a comedian through all of the basics; writing jokes, stage presence, connecting to an audience and more.
You'll be workshopping, writing, and perfecting your own material. We'll look at what makes good comics good, what makes a bad comic bad, and discovering more about your own personal perspective and how to make that funny.
Dar yl Felsberg has been doing stand up comedy for more than 20 years and has recorded and produced a Billboard charting album, seen on various TV Programs, and has worked with legends like George Carlin and Gallagher to Jimmy Pardo and more. He still tours about 100 nights a year across the country. A supporter of and leader of new comics, Daryl is excited to work with fresh voices.
So whether your goal is to be the next big comic - or you're just looking for an interesting way to work on self-confidence and stage fright, this is the class for you!
Students will meet each week for class, they will have regular writing assignments during the term. Class culminates in a final performance in July that you can invite all of your friends and family to come watch!

I don’t play pranks, but I have been pranked on! A college friend of mine, who worked part-time at a mortuary had me pick him up from work once. I’m in this unsettling room full of caskets waiting for him to come out so we can leave when he calls to me over the intercom, “Just leave and go into the hallway. The office is a couple of doors down. I am almost finished here.”
I go that way and opened the door, when a “body” falls in front of me! My friend came out laughing so hard! It wasn’t a real body, naturally. But it seemed real enough when it was falling toward me!

FUNNY
What was the best prank you've ever played on someone?
I used to joke around all the time back in the day. Played pranks on my buddy Brent all the dang time.
I used to put black ink on the Press knobs so he'd get ink on his hands. OH! And I'd put ink on his big giant head phones too.
Once I adhered my manager's coffee mug to his desk. Took him all day to get it unstuck. That was a good one.

CLASSICS MEET SAMMIE HAMM
OWNER OF Deport Classic Auto
Story By: Nanalee Nichols
It looks hopeless, there’s nothing left but shredded foam, ripped vinyl and rust. But when Sammie Hamm gets through working his magic, there is a just rolled off the Detroit assembly line car interior. The owner of Deport Classic Auto is a master at rebuilding or restoring car upholstery, dashboards, door panels and even wooden pickup beds. He’s also gaining a reputation nationwide in the world of car restoration.
He’s been on television and his work is to be found in twenty U.S. states, in Mexico, in Cuba and he says he thinks a heavy piece of construction equipment in Africa!
He and his wife, Elizabeth, have three girls, Lydia, age 20, Faith 16, and Emily 14.
Sammie grew up in Deport. It’s home. In fact, Elizabeth has recently moved her accounting business into a front office on Main Street in Deport where her husband’s business is.

RESTORING
THE
Sammie Hamm stands beside a like-new Pontiac firebird that Deport Classic Auto has redone. It’s only one of the many vehicles under restoration at his business. Hamm says that red is far and away the most popular color for street rods and sports cars.
Sammie served 3 1/2 years in the military. He saw 17 countries before returning home.
After that, he was working in construction when he went to buy a car from Wayne Stinson who did car upholstery work. He ended up helping Wayne unload a customer’s vehicle and coming back the next day. Wayne gave him a job cutting patterns and he was hooked. He worked with Stinson until he passed away, then returned to construction. But he bought himself a $100 upholstery sewing machine and every evening he spent “tearing everything I owned apart to learn how it was done”.
He jumped off into repairing upholstery on the company trucks at the construction business he worked for, and redid seats on their heavy equipment too.
Then he leaped head first into street rods and classic cars and it’s his specialty now. His work quickly began to get attention. Word of mouth soon made him visible in the world of street rodding and classic cars.
Gas Monkey Garage is a wellknown YouTube program, and he’s been on two episodes: Episode 52 “Fleetwood Part 2," and Episode 78, "Crew Dually."
He’s done a number of vehicles that went to the well-known Barrett Jackson and Mecum auctions where the vehicles are high-dollar perfection.
He does a lot of local car club members' work, too. In fact, he sometimes even details them for the customers before a show.
He is completely self-taught. For the first time, last year, he attended classes in Utah. But for 14 years he learned by
leather is applied, it’s obvious he is a perfectionist.
“The best jobs are people who say they want this and that color and let me run with it” Hamm smiles.
The most unusual thing he’s restored is a bus that was built by Henry Ford. It was used to bring businessmen to and from the Ford
but is on loan to the Henry Ford Museum.
“The ugliest thing I’ve ever done, I think, is an orange car with orange and tan seats. Well, no, maybe it was a delivery van that was lined with purple velvet and they had me stitch in silver spiderwebs all over” he laughs.
16 Paris Life
FEATURE
He doesn’t use wooden bed kits, he hand-picks the wood at the sawmill. The shop is hung with whole cowhides, the rich smell of leather mingling with fresh sawdust.
In addition to cars, he’s done things like boats, planes and items with sentimental value.
A doctor’s buggy was rebuilt completely except for the wheels. Brass and wood, richly tufted leather, it looks brand new. So did a family’s precious chair filled with memories.
A street rod no longer had room for the battery under the hood. Now there is a matching, 1960’s hard-side suitcase in the trunk. It’s a custom-built container for the battery! That’s just an example of the attention to detail his work gets.
He has purchased a number of old buildings in Deport and is slowly fixing roofs and windows. It gives him room for all the vehicles.
This 1966 MUSTANG FASTBACK
I NTERIOR is being completely restored s tarting from floorboards all the way to consoles and headliners by Sammie Hamm of Deport Classic Auto. This is a mid stage point. The classic vehicle is being done for the famed Mecum Auction Company.
The finished Mustang Fastback is a thing of beauty. The curved oak was made by building a box and steaming the wood for a few hours. THE FINISHED P ROJECT IS COMPLETELY AUTHENTIC

The best jobs are people who say they want this and that color and let me run with it
Right now, he has a 1966 Mustang Fastback, 1987 Firebird, 1971 Mach 1 Mustang, ‘40 model Chevy Coupe, ‘65 Mustang, ‘69 Impala and even a Bugatti body. Everything else they will make for the Bugatti. There is a 1941 Willys Jeep that is being redone. It’s been in the same family for generations. There’s a 1939 Ford hot rod truck, an Econoline Van and a Dodge destined for a big auction. His crew is building wooden framework and carefully sanding the foam used to repair dashboards and consoles and seats. Headliners are flawless, door panels are perfect. Vehicles are in various stages of completion. A fairly recent addition is a skiver machine that precisely shaves the backside of leather so that seams will not be raised up but flat.
On the wall is a drawing Hamm has made of his section of Main Street. One of those buildings used to be Earl Gardner Motor Company. He’s looking for a photo of it back in the day, so he can have a display using old and new pictures. Every day this talented entrepreneur looks at the drawing and reminds himself, “a dream without a plan is just a wish”. There’s no doubt that Sammie Hamm has a plan and is working hard to make his dream come true. And along the way, he is creating some beautiful, rolling works of art. u

The annual event is near! Sam Bell Maxey House is hosting its egg scramble — a favorite tradition for Parisians. Every year, families gather at the Sam Bell Maxey House lawn to search for eggs. The event celebrates not only the Easter holiday but the history of Paris and the Sam Bell Maxey House, as well.
"This Easter event is one we look forward to every year at the Maxey House,” said site educator
Elana Barton. “Not only is it exciting to see the children dash to get as many eggs as possible, this event also has historical significance as Lala Long, the wife of Sam Bell Maxey’s heir, would have Easter activities for neighborhood children.”
The hunt has been held for many years and has become a part of the property’s history.

Lighten Up Get Rid of the Excess Baggage
My daughter recently transitioned from basketball season to track season. She participated in field events as well as running events. I’ve attended several track meets already this season. I have noticed something about most of the runners. When runners get ready for a race, they give a lot of attention to their gear. The race may be long or short, but often only a few seconds separate runners as the finish line. Because every ounce and every portion of every ounce counts, the runners find every way to eliminate excess weight. Shorts and shirts are made of the
thinnest and lightest material. Most of them don’t wear socks and if they do they are very lightweight. Their shoes, the heaviest item in their wardrobe, have gone through testing so they are as light as they can be.
The writer his Hebrews compared Christian life to a long-distance race, and he told us to get rid of excess baggage and sin in our lives. Many of us carry around baggage of neglected areas that have become bloated or weak, such as how much money we spend, a lack of exercise, too little exercise, too little time with our families, or watching too much television/social media. Our sins are areas of disobedience that weigh us down with guilt and fog our vision of God’s purpose in our lives.
Look as this scripture, Hebrews 12:1-2; Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What do we know about the sin and the weight that is described? First, we need to recognize the negative impact they have on us. Yes, we are still running, but not as far or as fast as we could run without them. When we look to Jesus and are free from the weight of baggage and sin, we can run toward Him and His purpose for our lives even faster.
I’m thankful that God gave me this revelation in the scriptures because this Preacher Dad was having a little bit of an issue with the lack of clothing that my daughter has to wear on the track field!! Lol thank you Lord!!! u

I'm so embarassed. My husband likes to fart all time. He will fart in the Walmart and speed walk away leaving everyone to think I did it. Once we were at the movies and he farted like 3 different times! It was a PACKED theater and I kept smacking his arm only to be met with insistent laugher. The guy behind us literally high-fived him! Which kinda made me feel a little better about this stinky hostage situation, but still! I love him so much, but we are inching closer into shart territory every day. Would I be a terrible person if I sneaked some Gas-X into his morning coffee?
-UPDATE-
I did it! I've been secretly giving him an anti-farting pill in the mornings. No longer do I have to worry about his public flatulence. Of course now he does all his gas passing at night in his sleep...pros and cons I guess. 5-stars to

I moved to Paris in 2003 to take the position of president of Paris Junior College. For the last twenty years, I have worked to make sure PJC remains a viable opportunity for residents of this area to access education above a high school diploma. PJC is critical to the future economic success of this region in providing workforce skills training and customized training for area industry. I have focused on making sure PJC remains affordable and an institution of quality pro viding individuals the opportunity to get their first two years in preparation for transfer to a university as a junior or the skills to go immediately to work. I have been involved in new industry recruitment and listening to what industry needs so that the college can do its part in making sure the training needs are met.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your role in the commu nity.
I love this community and I love its people and I want to see it flourish and grow.
What impact do you hope to have on other Parisians?
I want to help assure that this community remains economically strong. Most of all, I want to know that lives have been changed for the better because of Paris Junior College.
What advice would you give to younger you?
Take advantage of opportunities to learn. It may not be easy, and it may not happen quickly but keep on working to reach your goal. Words spoken in anger can never be taken back.
Also any additional information is welcome as well!
What made you decide to pursue your career?
I received a BBA in Finance with plans of being a CPA. I worked doing financial analysis and as an accountant. I went to work as an accountant at Texas Christian University so that I could get a master’s in business administration. During the time I worked at TCU as Assistant Controller and Director of Managerial Finance, I started thinking about what I wanted to do long-term. I decided I wanted to teach accounting at a community college where I could make a difference in the lives of others. I was the first one in my family to attend college, receiving an associate degree from a community college, and felt the need to give back. I took a job teaching accounting at Navarro College where I not only taught two transfer accounting courses, but also implemented a two-year program to prepare students to take the CPA exam (this was prior to the Texas State Board requiring a four-year degree to be able to take the CPA exam). I had students passing the CPA exam with only an associate degree. After teaching accounting for seven years, I was frustrated that students faced obstacles that I couldn’t help them with. At that point, I decided if I wanted to be in a position where I could have a greater impact in making changes, it would be in the community college president’s roll. I decided then I wanted to be a rural community college president, so I went back to school part-time to get my doctorate and began gaining the broad experience which was needed. My career goal has been to make sure young people know that they can go to college and prepare for a very good job or prepare to transfer to a university and receive a bachelor’s degree. Some of my former students are licensed CPAs in Texas.
I have enjoyed a wonderful career. My time at PJC has been very rewarding, especially, each December and May when we have graduation. We have wonderful students who go on to do wonderful things. The best part of my job is when I get to spend time with our students. I grew up in a small town and graduated in a class of 37. I didn’t have a clue what the possibilities were and was fortunate that there was a local community college. As a first-generation college student, I didn’t know how college worked but there were people there who helped guide me and prepare me. When I look back, I know that had it not been for that community college, I would not have achieved a bachelor’s or master’s degree. I chose to give back and hope to make that kind of difference for others. u

Is Exercise a cure for Depression?
Research has proved that exercise lowers the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Exercise also extends the average life span of a person. However, the benefits of exercise in lowering the risks associated with mental health are not yet publicized.
Most of us do exercise to get into good shape, to clear our minds or to relieve stress but how often do we exercise to consider it as a viable cure for mental illness which is just as effective as medication and counseling?
Psychologists and clinicians have studied exercise as an alternative treatment for depression for almost 30 years now. Blumenthal was the pioneer behind this research. Blumenthal and his colleagues, while researching the benefits of exercise on cardiovascular health inadvertently discovered that working out seemed to improve people's moods and reduce symptoms of depression.

HEALTH
such as, insomnia, fatigue, persistent low mood, feelings of worthlessness and lack of concentration.
According to World Health Organization, Depression is one of the leading causes of disability and death around the world. At any given time, it affects 350 million people world wide but only a fraction of suffers seek help and out of those only 1/3rd respond to standard treatment which is usually counseling and medication.
Some researchers have tried to understand what types of exercises and intensity levels are most effective as an antidepressant. Therefore, in 2005 Trivedi a scientist and researcher conducted a 3-month study, which proved that the adults who exercised at the highest intensity had lessoned the severity of their depression by 47 percent, compared with only 30 percent for the low-intensity group while the group that only did stretching lowered the severity of their depression by 29 percent. According to researchers, the minute you hope on your bike, treadmill or pick up your dumb bells,
So how does exercise help cure depression?
your body chemistry starts changing. Exercise boosts your heart rate and metabolism, thus sending blood, oxygen, hormones and neurochemicals through out your body to respond to the physical challenge of exercise since the body senses exercise as a kind of stress.
Since researchers think of depression as a disorder of managing stress, hence, evidence suggests that habitual moderate exercise rewires the brain and immune system to better cope with physical and mental stress, therefore the more frequently you exercise, the better your body becomes at dealing with stressors of all kinds while lowering the risk for the body to have a depressive episode at any given time.
Moreover, based on increasing evidence, exercise also seems to mimic some of the chemical effects of antidepressant medication. Since some forms of depression can be because of impaired growth of both brain cells and the connections between them therefore the antidepressant that helps increase the level of serotonin that lowers the intensity of depression by producing a molecule called BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor), it has also been known that exercise helps enhance the production of BDNF. u

Cleaning Your Stainless Steel Surfaces
The sleek design of stainless steel can give any kitchen a stylish and contemporary look. The problem is, these surfaces are prone to showing fingerprints and water stains, which can sometimes be difficult to remove. However, there are a fewsimple steps you can take to keep your stainless steel appliances, countertops and sinks shining like new.

GIVE THEM A REGULAR CLEANING
Although resistant and durable, time and overuse can deteriorate the condition and appearance of stainless steel. However, this metal won’t wear as a result of too much cleaning, so remove spots and smudges as soon as they appear. Routinely cleaning these surfaces will go a long way in keeping them looking great.
KEEP THAT SHINE
Water spots can be cleaned with some warm water and a clean cloth.Make sure to properly dry the surface to prevent additional water stains from forming. Anylon scouring pad will come in handy to remove any food residue in sinks or on countertops. Use a mild abrasive free of chlorine and iron to eliminate light surface scratches. Deeper scratches, on the other hand, can be repaired with a good professional polishing.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Simply put, stainless steel and bleach do not mix. Using cleaning products that contain bleach can cause rust to form and the steel to corrode, so avoid them at all costs. This goes for all cleaning products that contain harsh and aggressive chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid. Salt and white vinegar can negatively affect the metal’s surface over time, so use them sparingly. Finally, avoid using metal sponges, brushes and scouring pads as they’ll leave unsightly scratches on your surfaces.

Creating your very own art studio
An art studio in your home is the perfect place to express your creativity without having to stow away your works in progress. Regardless if it’s for painting, sculpting or drawing, chances are your studio will be just as unique as you are. Personal preferences aside, there are some basics that all fun and functional art studios require.
1. PROPER LIGHTING
The best light to work by is natural light. Of course, white fluorescent lighting will get the job done if your studio doesn’t have any windows.
2. GOOD VENTILATION
Fresh air is always a good thing, regardless of your craft. However, certain artists tend to work with products that emit harmful fumes, such as oil paints. If your studio doesn’t have any windows, make sure to have a fan or two on hand to keep the air circulating.

Game Review
In my house window shopping on the Play Station Store counts as a legit date-night. Not long ago as my husband and I were scrolling through the seemingly bottomless games when we stopped on a funny title, ‘Ghost of a Tale’. At this point we were over an hour into our perusing and mostly laughing at the games we thought sounded or looked silly. Upon clicking this title I was completely takin’ aback by the introductory screen. A beautifully illustrated scene showcasing a mouse with a lute on his back and a lantern in his paw surrounded by lime green flames. Other characters composed in the background and foreground include rats, mice, and a bearded frog. After seeing many indie duds back-to-back during our date, I was not mentally prepared for the stunning trailer that we were about to watch. A small mouse in an immersive world battling his way through what seemed like a castle and even a forest against much larger rats and even a skeletal rat! Within the first 10 seconds I shot straight up to pay attention and to my surprise the hubby was keenly tuned in as well; we were sold instantly.
Story and gameplay
Ghost of a tale is a medieval themed action RPG adventure game. You play as, Tilo, a small mouse with a determination to find his wife Merra. The open world game sports a main storyline along with many side quests from a wide range of quirky, charming, and even crude characters. These characters have plenty of personality and cheeky dialog.
The game starts you out waking up in a prison cell. This opening scene is so important as you get your very first clue, a letter explaining how your wife, Merra, was struck by the Baron and when you went to her, crying out, you were knocked out. The letter also hints at you collecting these red flowers that remind you of, Merra.
A second note accompanied by a key to your cell is presented in the room stating that you must get to the watchtower. The premise is simple, however it's anything but straightforward. The detailed prison is maze-like, full of twists and turns with multiple locked doors leading to mysterious places.
36 Paris Life
There are rat guards around every corner and if they aren't passed out in a drunken stupor then they are diligently patrolling the halls with exceptional hearing. While most guards will try to attack, Tilo, but if donned with the correct outfit you may be able to walk right past them. The developers did add in a fun little twist to this strategy, as some guards might stop you for a bit of dialog and bully, Tilo, into forking over goods from his satchel.
You aren't a fantastic fighter so you must keep your wits about you while sneaking around the catacombs which are littered with lots great hiding spots. There are many items to collect some can be used to throw and knock out guards or cause a distraction while others are for health, lore, and clothing. Tilo, also has the ability to level up which is helpful. Overall the game does a great job of not holding the player's hand. You get to freely explore and discover areas without recourse to the main storyline. Take your time getting to the watchtower there really is no rush and tons of secrets to find.
Graphics and visuals
‘Ghost of a Tale’, was developed by Lionel "Seith" Gallat, an extremely talented former animation supervisor working on films such as, ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘The Road to El Dorado’, and ‘The ‘Lorax’ during his time at DreamWorks and Universal. ‘Ghost of a Tale’, was always destined to be graphically stunning, when you have a mastermind like Gallot bringing it to life. Gallat started out as a lone wolf on his first game, though it didn't take long before he decided to assemble an A-Team of professional animators to help make his vision a reality. Together they crafted this beautiful game using Unity, a game engine that is equipped with easy-to-learn tools and architecture.
The hero of this tale, Tilo, is designed and animated to perfection. Firstly, he is out-right adorable! The little bell on his cap jingles with a subtle tone. His ears and tail move seamlessly with the character. He was lovingly crafted from the twitch of his whiskers down the realistic way he scampers down the hall. Every NPC in the game is treated with the same level of attention. The medieval style game is full of lush green foliage, impressive brick towers, and musty moist catacombs. Many of the items can be interacted with, aiding to the immersion.
This game is so gorgeous I found myself spending more time perving on the graphics than actually playing the game. To be fair the artist in me simply can't help it. Other stunning games that have stopped me in my tracks would include (but are not limited to): ‘The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild’, ‘Kena: Bridge of Spirits’, and the ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ games. ‘Ghost of a Tale’, might be a small indie title, but it stands up there with the big dogs when it comes to graphics and exploration.
I am so happy I gave this game a chance, the trailer delivered everything it promised and more. The story is rich and fulfilling. I'm also excited to share that as of March 9th, 2023, Gallant, announced that a sequel is officially in development! ‘Ghost of a Tale’, is incredibly affordable and worth every penny. Happy gaming, friends!
