CT Mah Jongg Club

The Comanche Trace Mah Jongg Club was formed in 2006 by a member who wanted to bring this fun game to the CT community. It quickly gained in popularity, growing to the current size of 65 members!

Texas 42

A little 42 trivia for you: This game’s history is an astounding 135 years old! In the year of 1887, in the small town of then Trapp Spring (now part of Garner located west of Fort Worth) Texas, two young schoolboys, Walter Earl and William A. Thomas, developed this trick-taking domino game. Earl, 14, and Thomas, 12, children of devout Baptists, were caught playing cards in the barn. Because of the moral standard of the day, it was considered a sin to play cards, and they were disciplined for their wrongdoing. So, they set out to find a way to play cards using dominos.

As the story goes, by fall of 1887, they had devised a four-player game using double-six dominos incorporating bidding and trumps, very close to the game we play today. Playing dominos was acceptable to their parents, and they started to teach others how to play. The game caught on and has been handed down over the generations.

Texas 42 has not only become one of Texas’ favorite pastimes, but in 2011, it was designated the Official State Domino Game of Texas.

Come join us the third Wednesday of each month in the Ladies Locker Room, from 4 to 6 p.m. Save these dates to play: April 19, May 17, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 20 (subject to change).

Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on characters and symbols. The object of the game is to match one of the various combinations of tiles from the current years Mah Jongg card.

Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. The more you play, the more challenging the game becomes.

Our group meets from 1 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Ladies Locker Room.

The second Wednesday of the month is hosted by Cheryl Wood and Rose Leewright and is primarily considered for experienced players; however, all levels are welcomed.

The fourth Wednesday of the month is a practice session used to hone our skills. This session is hosted by Carolyn Goodloe and Sabia Milligan. Each session encourages new members to join, and we provide experienced partners to support new members to learn the game. We have training guides that we provide to each new member wanting to learn the game of Mah Jongg.

We hope anyone interested in learning this fun game will reach out to one of us to learn more about us or just to join one of our sessions.

Comanche Trace Hiking Club

CT Ladies Club

The Comanche Trace Ladies Club offered a busy calendar for our community during the first two months of first quarter of 2023. We started the year in January with a fantastic luncheon attended by over 65 ladies. Our series “New-Year/New-You” kicked off with a presentation from Dr. Jennifer Erian from Peterson Health regarding “Managing Pain.” We also heard from two volunteer organizations at Peterson regarding opportunities for our members.

In February, we continued “New-Year/New-You” with a wonderful lunch followed by Teri Secrest providing an entertaining presentation on Romance and the Scientific Connection to the Sense of Smell. Teri and her daughter, Elizabeth Rose, provided beautiful door prizes and Teri’s awardwinning book to all attendees.

The Chick-Flick group of over 30 ladies attended several movies, including “A Man Called Otto” and “80 for Brady.” We continue to find movies at the local theater for those who wish to join us.

Over 40 residents attended Comanche Trace Night at The Cailloux Theater on February 4. Everyone enjoyed the performance of “Me and Juliet,” starring one of our neighbors, Patsy Kimes. Before the theater, over 20 neighbors enjoyed wine and conversation at Turtle Creek Winery in downtown Kerrville.

In early February, 14 ladies put their artistic skills to a test by participating in a Glass Art Heart Class at J. Philippus Art Studio followed by a fun lunch at Maggiano’s Restaurant in San Antonio.

We had our first CTLC Sip and Shop hosted by Boutique M. Everyone had fun shopping and helping each other analyze the clothes. CTLC is working with other local vendors to set dates for other Sip and Shops.

The Comanche Trace Hiking/Walking Group, sponsored by CTLC, planned several area events. This group welcomes families and singles to join in hikes at different paces in area parks.

CLUB ACTIVITIES / CLUBS WITHIN A CLUB

It was a bit of a slow start to the 2023 season. We enjoyed a few play days in November before taking December off for the holidays.

Then January blew in with cold, rainy weather, and we all stayed inside more than we played.

But the weather finally broke, and we were able to get back into the swing of things!

We have a great season of play scheduled. In addition to our normal Thursday play, we are working hard to plan a few special events for the first half of 2023 season:

• Comanche Classic Member/Guest Tournament: May 4-5

• Joint Play Day with the Lady 9’ers: March 16

• Inter-Club Play with River Hills LGA: June 15

We have welcomed several new members this year, and we would love to welcome even more ladies to our group. We play on Thursday mornings and enjoy a mix of fun games, friendly competition and good times with friends.

If you’d like to check out our play schedule and game descriptions, visit our LGA Website at www.

If you have any questions about the league or how to join, feel free to contact Stacey Isola at sisola498@gmail.com. See y’all on the course!

The Comanche Trace Lady 9ers ended 2022 at the “Club 9ers.” A throwback party with Lady 9ers and their special guests dressed in their vintage holiday finest to enjoy the Comanche Trace Vista room transformed into a Christmas speakeasy lounge. With intimate dining and a crooner to dance to, the evening put everyone in the holiday spirit.

To start the new year, the Comanche Trace Lady 9ers had their annual Kickoff Luncheon with 49 ladies in attendance. The food provided by Chef Chandler and his staff was delicious. The table decorations, creatively designed by the Lady 9er social committee, were festive and lovely with a Valentine’s Day theme.

During the Kickoff Luncheon, Lady 9ers that accomplished either a Birdie, Chip In, Broke 50 for the first time or had a Hole In One in 2022 during their official Thursday play were awarded a “brag” bag tag with pins for their respective accomplishments.

2022 AWARD WINNERS

Ladies that received awards for 2022 were:

Birdies: Susie Geiger, Helen Herd, Rose Leewright, Mona Spano, Margaret Wheless, Kristen Crandall and Diane Smith

Chip Ins: Rose Leewright, Kristen Crandall, Mona Spano, Susie Geiger, Julie Yancy, Jerri Scott, Kathy Leonard and Shelley Pieper

Broke 50 for the first time: Kimber Rhoads

Hole in One: Margaret Wheless on the Valley #8 and Delayne Sigerman on the Hills #3

And a new award for 2022 went to the ladies with the most improved handicap index. The winning ladies each improved their handicap index by 26%. Congratulations to Suzanne Gschwind and Sheila Audrain.

ON THE GROW

The 2023 Games schedule was revealed with games designed to be fun while providing a light competitive spirit for ladies of all skill levels.

To start the year, the Lady 9ers will play a four-person team game with a poetic rhyme like, “Lady 9ers are great and love to have fun, add your two middle scores for the total on this one.” It promises to be a round of fun golf and plenty of laughs followed by lunch with awards for the top poetic team.

The Lady 9ers membership is currently at 71 members and continues to grow! They are the second largest golf group at Comanche Trace. The Lady 9ers is open to any lady with a Comanche Trace golf membership. Their membership is made up of ladies at all levels of play from beginners to experienced golfers. They are a very compassionate group and always ready to help one of their members in need.

Don’t miss out on all the fun golf and socials that are planned for 2023 and join the Lady 9ers today.

Welcome to springtime!

The time has moved forward an hour, the sun is out, and we’re well into spring — an uplifting season that everyone appreciates after the long months of coldness. Nature has awakened, it throws away its winter blanket and lets us know that it is time to start fresh once again.

Spring is the season of hope and renewal with its increase of light and warmth. We are welcomed back to the outdoors, and we smile for no reason. Spring is the perfect time to get outside with its balmy temperatures and soft breezes, it’s the perfect time to get out and put some spring back into your step.

Here are a few ideas to get started on before the temps of summer start to climb.

Walk It Off: It’s spring, the days last longer and the weather is great. Take a stroll through your neighborhood or along the river.

Take A Hike: Hike the trails and explore nature at a park in the area, it’s great for building endurance and burning off winter’s calories.

Take A Class: Weather in the Hill Country can be fickle in the spring, so if you haven’t tried a yoga or Pilates class before, now is a good time to find your center while building strength and flexibility, join Yoga & Pilates with Kristen.

Hit The Road: Bicycling is not only fun, but it has huge benefits, like strengthening

CT Topless Club

bones, increasing muscle strength and flexibility and better endurance.

Get Wet: If you weren’t a swimmer before, now’s a great time to start. It will provide a unique break from your regular spring routine, and it will give you a full body workout. Swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness, and it helps one sleep better, too.

Take It Slow: Starting small and taking it slowly are key in preventing demotivation, burnout or even injury.

Always Stay Safe: It’s important to take the right precautions when exercising outside. First, wear proper sun protection. This includes sunscreen, long sleeves, if necessary, UV-protectant sunglasses and don’t forget a hat. Shielding your skin will keep your skin healthy and blemish free. Secondly, and most important, stay hydrated. You should drink lots of water no matter what fitness routine you are doing.

Everything comes back to life during spring — the sun makes its way through the clouds and shines brighter every day, the buds bloom, the rivers begin to run, and we get to wake up to the sound of birds chirping. Get out and enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer.

The CT Convertible group affectionately known as the “Topless” group was conceived in 2010 when three couples (Swann, Hallberg, Self) went for a spring wildflower drive. Being relatively new to the Hill Country, we thought starting a group of driving enthusiasts with convertibles would help us get to know the Hill Country and our neighbors better. This group has grown to 50 convertibles. We usually caravan from the sales center and drive about 100-150 miles in a day with a stop for lunch and conversation. We have also done some longer drives including a leaf peeping trip to Arkansas last month. Hope you will join us! Interested CT residents who own a convertible and would like to be included on the roster for drives please contact Lisa Self at

Pickleball at Comanche

Trace

Pickleball. You’ve all heard about it. Often described as a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton, pickleball grew nearly 40% between 2019 and 2021, making it America’s fastest-growing sport.

So why is it so popular? Simple answer is FUN. Pickleball is very fun, it’s easy to learn, and as an added bonus, you get some great exercise. How do you get started? Come out to the courts and join other players during Open Play. ALL skill levels are welcome. Open Play at Comanche Trace is on Mondays at 3 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. Fridays. At Open Play, you will find a very welcoming Pickleball group who are more than happy to help you get started. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and athletic shoes. Paddles and balls are available in the Sales Center.

See you on the courts!

Cooking up a beautiful life

Hans and Annemarie Schlunegger bring elegance, a bit of Swiss charm to their Comanche Trace home

The Hill Country has had a close hold on the Schlunegger’s hearts since 1969, when they moved to Kerrville. Hans and Annemarie Schlunegger recently shared their cherished stories of realizing the true American dream from their elegant home in Comanche Trace. With a lovely view of Texas skipping off the infinity pool — golf greens, dancing sky and alive landscape in the distance — they shared their story.

Their distinctive home sits atop one of the highest points in the world-renowned Comanche Trace golf and country club development. The masterfully designed and beautifully decorated home — with Swiss music and the couple’s kindness filling the air — is warm and welcoming.

A lovely custom-built sideboard and a game room with tasteful bar are simply stunning and have the elegance reminiscent of the glory days when the Inn of the Hills, Alpine Lodge and Tick Tock Club were owned by the Schluneggers.

Hans said he met “the most beautiful woman in the world” at a seminar at a university in Switzerland. He was wearing his full Swiss Army corporal uniform with bayonet and said he will never forget the moment.

The stories they both share — with twinkles in their eyes — are grand and of a lovely time of fine food and elegance. Occasionally, Hans would say

something funny, like “I like glass dining tables so I can see my wife’s knees.”

THE BEGINNING

The couple worked and studied at Belvoirpark, a prestigious college for hotel management training in Zurich, Switzerland. They fell in love and married.

In 1950, Hans completed his cook’s apprenticeship and

realized his dream of becoming a master chef. He continued to hone his skills at several famous European hotels.

In 1959, Hans and Annemarie left their devoted family in the Swiss Alps and headed for Seattle, Washington, to hopefully reach the American dream. Hans had accepted a job at the Olympic Westin Hotel in Seattle. By then, the couple had welcomed

their first son, Ueli, and the young family began their new life in a new country.

The meager beginnings and the now cherished friends that appeared as soon as they arrived in Seattle thrilled the couple. Soon Hans, Annemarie and Ueli were proud to became American citizens.

Hans went from working as a chef de partie in Seattle to becoming sous chef at the

Rice Hotel in Houston. While there, in November 1963 — just before the tragic event in Dallas — he directed a dinner for the press and President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Hans recalled how President Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Texas Gov. John Connally were escorted through the pantry in order to safely bring them to the press reception.

Hans remembered the menu and said all the food was Texas grown and raised. The elegant meal began with a gulf shrimp cocktail with a calypso sauce, quail from Sugarland, served a la Jacqueline, goose liver, chateaubriand Texas cattle, vegetables and a fine dessert served with Texas’ famous Blue Bell Ice Cream.

The presidential couple were served this famous meal in their quiet suite.

A year later, Hans became executive chef at the Warwick in Houston, at that time one of the country’s foremost hotels.

Hans won several culinary awards in his lifetime, and he led the Texas chef’s team, as captain, to victory in the Culinary Olympics Gold in Miami, Florida, in the American culinary competition in 1957. He and his team were also awarded the two top entries. One winning entry was a sculpture of a carved mermaid, titled “Fisherman’s Dream.” The mermaid held a spread of edible netting featuring gourmet fish.

Hans has created culinary art for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, first astronauts, sports champions, movie stars such as John Wayne, Phyllis Diller and Walter Matthau, renowned chef Charles Finance and worldwide famous entertainers.

Hans was the Governor of Best Western Hotel Inn and Suites District 5 and, in 1966, he was inducted into the America Academy of Chefs.

Hans held the honored position of serving as the President of the Texas Chefs Association in the ’60s. For more than 50 years, he was

the culinary team captain and member of the worldwide Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a gourmet food and wine association.

He is also a resolute Rotary Club member, and his children, Kurt and Marion, have both served as president of the Rotary Club in Pecos.

Hans is the author of two novels, “All’ Acqua” and “The Entrepreneur.”

COMING TO KERRVILLE

In 1969, Hans and Annemarie leased the food and beverage operation at the Inn of the Hills, where they quickly built a long list of loyal customers. Once they arrived in Kerrville and learned of the Angora Club, they were captured and became involved in the organization.

In 1972, the couple founded Annemarie’s Alpine Lodge Restaurant in Kerrville, which they owned and operated for 20 years. The unique Swiss restaurant always offered a hearty welcome with an atmosphere of unsurpassed happiness, grace and wonderful food.

In 1993, the Schluneggers purchased the Inn of the Hills, and they completely renovated the hotel, bringing its landmark status.

Today, the family owns and operates the Best Western Swiss Chalet Hotel and Suites and the Swiss Clock Inn Restaurant in Pecos, and their children Kurt and Marian manage all details.

Hans credits his lovely wife, Annemarie — whose hospitality skills are as natural as her beauty — for their success and exceptional journey.

Hans and Annemarie have been married 65 years and have three children: son Ueli, who has two children, Sarah and Grant; daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Dean, her children, Anna and Kurt; and son, Kurt and children, Austin, Hans and Cindy Beth. They have two great-grandchildren, a full life, amazing stories and memories and so much joy and love ahead of them — and the elegance continues.

Bob and Thresa Pritchard create a rock-solid home at Comanche Trace

Bob and Thresa Prichard — and Paddington, a sweet Tibetan terrier — are enjoying everything that Comanche Trace offers and represents. This accomplished and inviting couple expressed the joy of finding and living in such a welcoming community.

“Everyone has been exceptionally kind, and we are thrilled to live in such an amazing community,” they said.

Their beautiful stone-adorned custom home is situated on the golf course with an enchanting pond running alongside. The floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace, polished Travertine floors, beautiful light fixtures, art niches with their own photography and artistic pieces from their journeys make their home inviting and warm.

The greens and water come alive as you watch the breathtaking view through the grand living room windows. The magnificent glass doors open onto a lovely, terraced patio with barbecue grill and inviting seating.

There are gathering spots for entertaining family and friends, and the built-in fire pit under the Texas sky is breathtaking.

The year-round pond hosts ducks, turtles and, at night, the lights flicker off the water.

Bob Pritchard is a retired Professor Emeritus of Organizational Psychology and Management at the University of Central Florida. He has been on the faculty of Purdue University and was a Professor at the University of Houston and Texas A&M University.

Bob invented ProMES, a highly effective management system for measuring and improving the productivity, effectiveness, motivation and overall performance of people in organizations. His award-winning research program has developed techniques that have been used by many organizations in the U.S. and internationally. He has

worked with organizations for more than 45 years and won several research awards and published 10 books and more than 100 articles on the subject.

The other half of the warm, loving couple is Thresa, or “T,” as her friends and family lovingly call her. She has the same devotion to improving the world as her husband. During her 20-plus years as a nurse, she realized the need for a better path for patients journeying through breast cancer treatment, so she created a program

that coordinated the care of patients. It helped patients navigate from a diagnosis to immediate appointments and treatment, all in a few days. T achieved remarkable results from this caring patient-devoted program, and it is still in use today.

T enjoys riding and taking care of her horse, Sam Elliott, competing in pickleball tournaments and playing the ukulele. Bob plays a classical guitar occasionally, as well.

The couple enjoy hiking, walking, kayaking and all the wonderful amenities and amazing people within Comanche Trace, Kerrville and the surrounding areas.

After living and traveling from Colorado, Florida, Montgomery, Texas, and other places they adored, they feel truly blessed to have found themselves nestled in the perfect location!

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

Sisters on a mission!

Have you ever dreamed of taking a luxurious, relaxing island vacation, only to arrive at your destination and discover it was nothing like the brochure portrayed? Perhaps we all have! That’s the reason my beautiful sister, Jan Weger, and I were “on a mission” to make sure that this Hawaiian vacation was truly just that — relaxing, rejuvenatiing and restoring. In fact, in the last two years, both of us have lost our beloved husbands to the ravishes of cancer, so our desire was to pause from life and heal the soul. There is something so nurturing and healing about water, and our hearts were longing to begin a fresh new chapter.

When I imagine reading a great book by the ocean, while sipping an exquisite island drink, followed by a nice long swim in a gentle sea, I would never think of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, until now! Hopefully this brief travel diary will help to overturn this myth and expand your curiosity to visit the unique island of Oahu yourself!

First things first: As someone who travels a lot in business, allow me to share a couple of my favorite packing tips in preparation of your next memorable vacation. First, study the weather patterns surrounding the weeks before, during and after your trip. Then take a day where you lay out each of your outfits, clothing, jewelry, shoes and even a hat, and photograph each outfit. Not only is it helpful if you are rushing to dress for dinner, should your luggage ever get lost you have an accurate record for the airline to reimburse you. My

favorite packing tip is using special bags called packing cubes, which keeps 5 or 6 outfits neatly folded in each zipper bag with no wrinkles! Finally, pack some earplugs so you can avoid hearing all the loud airline announcements should you desire to sleep on the plane.

Introducing the BEST hotel on the island of Oahu, Hawaii: the Kahala Hotel. This hotel is far away from Waikiki Beach, it has miles and miles of fine flat sandy beach to stroll on, gentle waves for swimming for all levels of swimmers. The reef is about 1/2 mile out and breaks all the waves before they get to the shore. They have a fabulous high-end Italian restaurant on site along with a local fresh food restaurant, hula classes, lei making classes, a secondfloor sunset bar overlooking the ocean and so much more. The hotel is owned by a Japanese woman with exquisite taste! The tropical fresh flower arrangements are so inspirational! The culture of respect and honor she has created permeate each part of your stay, from the

lovely ladies who care for your room each day to the friendly ladies who work in the shops and memorize your name on the first day!

The concept of a “tourist shop” does not exist here, and anything you purchase will be a treasure for years to come! And the best part? There are only two televisions in the entire public area of the hotel, and they are outdoors, so you are not bombarded with noise every time you turn around. (Yes, men, you will be able to watch your favorite teams at an outdoor bar.)

It did not take long for Jan and I to find our rhythm; early morning daily powerwalks on the fine sandy beaches, lots of mangos and fresh fruit for breakfast, a long easy swim and sometimes two or three swims a day, our daily dose of “vitamin D” sunbathing with a really good book and journal, followed by a rejuvenating nap.

Afternoons were our time to tour the island. We were blessed to find the BEST tour guide in all of Oahu. He just happens to be my youngest son, Joseph, who has been living on Oahu for 4 years! Skip the touristy places and join us for a real view of this island! Let’s begin with a fabulous hike called the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. The paths are all paved and very wide, with breathtaking views of the east shore of Oahu. Local families of all ages were out enjoying the day together along with a feeling of achievement when they reach the top. Tip: Carry a cross shoulder water bottle holder with water so you don’t have to hold on to anything while you walk. You will need water during this hike. After the hike, we stopped off at a cute town called Kailua,

where my son lives, for a really yummy lunch at Nalu Health Bar, where you can get the best Hawaiian Acai bowl!

Take a day and drive the famous highway along the coast to see one of the most thrilling surfing beaches in the world, Oahu’s North Shore. This day, we had another amazing tour guide, Joseph’s lovely girlfriend, Katie. Our favorite stop along the way was to Tropical Farms, a Macadamia Nut Farm Outlet. You can enjoy truly fresh coconut milk prepared on the spot, taste 10 different kinds of macadamia nuts and sip on fresh local coffee. Tip: They will ship you or your loved ones a Priority Mail box of nuts, so have your addresses ready!

Once you reach Waimea Beach, on the North Shore, give yourself plenty of time to take in the power of the ocean there, which is magnificent! Tip: Borrow a pair of binoculars from your hotel and marvel watching the surfers up close. Tip: Watch the documentary called “Hawaiian, the Legend of Eddie Aikau” before you go. It is a gripping true story of the history of this beach. On your way back to your hotel, there is a very famous hotel called Turtle Bay, which is the perfect place for a glass of wine and appetizers by the ocean around sunset.

If it is your first trip to Hawaii, the Polynesian Culture Center is really a must! You will step into another world, and the music

and dance just feed the soul. To view the most exciting sport on the island, base-jumping and parachuting, check out my son’s Instagram feed: @JosephTimothyWilliams.

Our stay was complete when Joseph and his friend, Ryan, took us to a most unusual restaurant in Honolulu called 1938 Indochine (1938indochine.com). Absolutely fabulous flavors and all served family style.

If you are truly looking for a satisfying, memorable time in Oahu, give yourself a full two weeks and stay at the Kahala! Tip: Avoid booking a time when there is a golf

tournament happening unless you like it busy. To make it more affordable, you can get a Delta American Express card, build up points with your purchases and lower the cost of both your airline tickets and hotels.

Jan and I came home feeling grateful and more joyful, almost like we had experienced a “little piece of heaven.” Mission successfully accomplished. We think you will love Oahu, too!

THE CAILLOUX

On March 27, 2003, a multi-year renovation project was brought to a joyous conclusion when the San Antonio Symphony presented the inaugural concert on the stage of Kerrville’s magnificent new Cailloux Theater.

Twenty years later, Playhouse 2000, managers of the theater on behalf of owners The City of Kerrville, are celebrating two decades of offering the highest quality performing arts to Kerrville and the Hill Country community.

That first night was a regional sensation. A standing-roomonly crowd of 810 paid up to $100 per ticket to enjoy a concert of works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sibelius and Copland — opened, or course, with a rousing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” — which was written up by newspapers both locally and in San Antonio. Honored guests included Mayor Stephen Fine, former Mayor Ben Low and State Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, who read a proclamation signed by Gov. Rick Perry.

Soon after that opening night, the steady stream of outstanding events gracing the Cailloux stage began to flow. The following week, the Baylor University Symphony was booked, and within the month, Playhouse 2000 presented the Tony Awardwinning musical “Big River” in the first of many locally produced plays and musicals.

The path to the grand opening

Celebrating 20 years of arts and entertainment for Kerrville

had begun more than three years earlier when Hill Country philanthropist and benefactors Mrs. Kathleen Cailloux and her daughter-in-law Sandy Cailloux began work in earnest to actualize their vision for improving the then 40-year-old Kerrville Municipal Auditorium into a regional showplace for the performing arts.

The Municipal Auditorium was built in 1960 on property donated by Mr. Walter Jarmon to the Kerr County War Memorial Association. By the mid-1990s, it had been transferred to The City of Kerrville, and its original mission to provide meeting and conference space was being better served by others.

With the Cailloux Family’s initial gift of more than $3 million, the process of designing and building a showcase of which Kerrville could be proud was launched. Surrounding property was procured, architects and associated professionals were engaged, and the community was involved in developing plans.

A 15-month construction process replaced all but a very

small portion of the original structure, and changed it from a run-of-the-mill event center into a true performing arts destination.

Architectural designs for the new facility were created by Peter Lewis, then of The Artisan Group, with support from consultants Barry Moore of Gensler Architects and Max Potter, acoustician.

Royce Faulkner of Faulkner Construction led the build, and more than 40 subcontractors who completed the work directed by Bill Reiffert & Associates, Structural Engineers; Maxwell Engineering, Civil Engineers; Rialto Studios, Landscape Architects; Emil Swize & Associates, Mechanical/ Electrical Engineers; and Texas Elegance By Design Inc., Interior Designers.

Total cost of the renovation exceeded $8 million, more than $7 million of which was provided by the Cailloux family and The Cailloux Foundation.

Playhouse 2000 took on completing the fundraising needed for the project, raising

more than $1 million from hundreds of private donors, including $100,000 raised in a single night’s event to fund the facility’s orchestra shell.

The entire project was completed with no use of tax dollars.

At the time, Playhouse 2000 President Kit Werlein called it “a unique collaboration and partnership between the public and private sectors to vastly improve city property for the use and enjoyment of all its citizens and visitors.”

The new hall was noted for the vastly improved acoustics and comfort in the audience chamber, and the luxurious finishes of the lobby and other public spaces. Special attention was given to the lobby’s spectacular marble floor, stainedglass chandeliers and the grand staircase leading to the upper seating areas.

Care was taken to maintain the “memorial” aspect of the original auditorium. A focal point of the lobby is the large wall located at the landing of the grand staircase, upon which are engraved in stone the names of Kerrville residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts from World War I through the Vietnam Conflict.

Over the years, The Cailloux Theater has hosted an amazing variety of events and artists, each bringing a unique portion of the international performing arts tapestry to Kerrville.

Some highlights include:

22 April-June 2023
THEATER

• Tony, Grammy, Oscar and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch.

• Tony and Emmy-winning actor Hal Holbrook in “Mark Twain Tonight,” a one-man show recreating the life and times of America’s most famous author.

• The world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra.

• A number of country music stars, including Larry Gatlin, Tammy Wynette, Mel Tillis and the incomparable Ray Price in one of the final performances of his career.

• The legendary Light Crust Dough Boys.

• Christian contemporary superstars Jars of Clay and Sandi Patty.

• Pop music icon Crystal Gayle.

• Lifetime Achievement Award winners Rockapella.

• And many more!

In an average year, the Cailloux Theater will host as many as 110 events and will see total attendance of more than 60,000. Of those, more than half will visit from outside the Kerrville ZIP Code.

Many local organizations and events call the Cailloux Theater “home” each year, including Tivy High School’s teacher recognition and Junior

and Senior Awards; music and theater programs of Kerrville ISD and Schreiner University; nonprofit groups like The Lions Club and Kerrville Pets Alive! and the Hill Country Youth Orchestras, the only free string program for young people in the country.

The Cailloux Theater is the performance venue for the Symphony of the Hills, the Kerrville-based professional orchestra also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The symphony’s five-concert season will conclude with “Orchestral Fire: Tchaikovsky,” featuring trumpeter Brandon Pauley, on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m.

The extravagantly appointed Cailloux Lobby is an excellent site for receptions and fundraisers, and a regular Polling Place for county, city, state and national elections.

2023 is also the 25th anniversary season for Playhouse 2000, which was formed as Kerrville’s Community Theater in 1998 by founding Artistic and Executive Directors Doug and Susan Ballentine and founding President Kit Werlein.

In those 25 years, Playhouse 2000 has presented more than 180 plays and musicals by and for the people of Kerrville. Every production in P2K’s history

has been created by volunteers both on stage and off under professional leadership, including the Balentines, partner directors Jeff and Heather Cunningham and current Executive Director Jeffrey Brown.

Playhouse 2000’s Season 2023 includes the main schedule of five plays and musicals presented on both The Cailloux Theater and VK Garage Theater stages plus the annual “Shakespeare in the Park” project presented in partnership with Kerrville’s Parks and Recreation department and the first play in a new series of modern plays called “Playhouse NOW!”

The Cailloux Theater is one part of the Kathleen C. Cailloux City Center for the Performing Arts, which also includes the Kit Werlein Annex and VK Garage

Theater, home of Kerrville’s Community Theater, Playhouse 2000.

Playhouse 2000 is a nonprofit corporation that serves dual roles: both as a producing theater company and as the management company responsible for the daily operations of the entire Cailloux City Center complex. P2K merges the two responsibilities into its overall mission to “bring people together to educate, entertain, enlighten and inspire with quality performing arts experiences.”

Complete information about activities at The Kathleen C. Cailloux City Center for the Performing Arts is available online at https:// caillouxperformingarts.com, or by telephone at 830-896-9393.

Meet Riley

Pyrenees mix keeps an eye on the neighborhood

Riley is a soon to be 2-year-old Pyrenees mix who came to us from the Gold Ribbon Rescue group in Austin.

He and his siblings were rescued on 9/11, so they were named after the search and rescue canines who worked the World Trade Center disaster. See the picture of his namesake, a 4-year-old golden retriever, working at Ground Zero.

Riley has been a very happy and highly visible CT resident since day one when Jan and Uncle Norm went to Johnson City to bring him home. He has many friends and loves his time at the dog park, CT Lake and The Grove.

One of his best friends is next door neighbor Kim, who meets him at the fence with treats.

As you may have noticed, Riley sits extremely tall in the golf cart while making his many security checks around the neighborhood. He is long legged, athletic and hopefully maxing out at about 100 pounds, although he does love chicken jerky. He’s been unusually calm for a dog his age… a chill pup who’s proud to be a momma’s boy.

Sitting at the back fence appears to be the perfect spot for Riley to interact with the wildlife. He watches the antelope bounce around and communicates quietly with the whitetail. He even has a pet frog near the back porch.

He very seldom barks unless someone is driving their cart the wrong direction on The Valley #4.

Jan and I have had a number of large dogs through the years. They have all been special, and Riley is no exception.

Kyle Erdige brings love of the outdoors to his post as CT Golf Course Superintendent

Golf Course Superintendent Kyle Erdige was born and raised on a dairy farm in Oneida, New York. The youngest of four children, Kyle grew up helping on his family’s farm, tending to various kinds of livestock. Being outside with his hands in the dirt has always had an appeal to him. His love of the outdoors and being able to watch things change and grow from the beginning of the day to end has always been a great inspiration for him.

In the fall of 1996, Kyle began his studies at SUNY Morrisville in Landscape Design. Kyle took a job at Kanon Valley Country Club in 1997 under the tutelage of his mentor, Mark Rowles, where he started out on the grounds crew and worked his way up to Foreman. After finding a new love for golf and golf course management, Kyle switched his course of study. In 1999, he transferred to SUNY Delhi, where he received his Associates Degree in Applied Sciences with a focus in Turf Management. During his time at Delhi, Kyle took an internship position at Turning Stone Resort Casino, where he assisted in the construction and grow-in of the Shenendoah Golf Club. After a successful internship, Kyle was hired full time as their Chemical Technician and continued to assist and oversee the growin at Shenendoah. In 2001, he left to become the Assistant Superintendent at Kanon Valley Country Club.

While at Kanon Valley, his passion for landscape and design led him to the

successful completion of a full course bunker renovation as well as upgrading their landscape and plantings. In 2006, Kyle left to become the Superintendent of Hickory Hill and Butternut Creek Golf Course. In the four years he was there, Kyle oversaw the installation of an advanced drainage system and revitalized golf cart paths, while developing a course wide beautification project. In 2010, he moved on from Hickory Hill and became the Director of Golf and Grounds at Timber Banks Golf Club. It was here where Kyle honed his skills and knowledge to give Timber Banks exceptional playing conditions, which has been recognized by Golfweek’s Best Courses to play in New York, ranked in the Top 25 in the U.S. for golf course conditions by Golf Advisor, as well as one of the best public courses and newest courses to play in New York State.

After exceeding his own expectations, a new challenge was calling, and in 2017, Kyle packed up, leaving NY behind and headed to the Southwest to become the Golf Course Superintendent of The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was here where he would spend four years revamping the fertilization program and collaborating with New Mexico State University to implement sub-surface irrigation. His Sunset Course was consistently ranked in the top two in the state, the club has maintained a Platinum Status as a Platinum Club of America while also maintaining an Audubon Certification.

In 2021, Kyle left Las Campanas and New Mexico to settle in West Texas as the new Superintendent at Lubbock Country Club. Although his time there was short, he felt Texas was his new home and jumped at the opportunity to become the Superintendent of Golf and Grounds at the Club at Comanche Trace.

Kyle has twin adult sons who reside in NY. Kaleb, who is studying law enforcement, and Konnor, who interned at Comanche Trace last summer and is currently following in his father’s footsteps studying Turf Management at Delhi.

Outside of work, Kyle is an avid golfer who also enjoys hunting, spending time with friends and family and traveling. He is a sports enthusiast and memorabilia collector. He is excited and honored to be part of the Comanche Trace community and team.

Kyle has twin sons, both studying in New York. Kaleb, shown here with his dad, is studying law enforcement.
