Since 1950, North Sunflower Medical Center, originally known as North Sunflower County Hospital has been serving the Mississippi Delta. We have made many changes throughout the years and are proud to continue to serve. NSMC’s Board of Trustees and the entire staff pledges to continue to provide only the highest standards in quality health care.
We pride ourselves in offering personalized care to all who enter our doors and are proud of our friendly, courteous staff who constantly seek to be better educated in the latest techniques and medical training available.
North Sunflower Medical Foundation is the charitable, non-profit, 501(c)(3) fundraising arm for North Sunflower Medical Center. The Founda-
tion operates for the benefit of the Medical Center and the residents of Sunflower County and surrounding areas by assisting with the enhancement of quality health care, to provide grants for educational purposes, to ensure the availability of health care professionals, and to partner with local governmental agencies in matters related to health care.
North Sunflower Medical Center offers a stateof-the-art Surgery Center, inpatient and outpatient therapy, and a Sleep Center within The Beacon Wellness Center. We offer a wide variety of outpatient surgeries, inpatient and outpatient cardiac, physical, occupation and speech therapies following surgery, strokes, new diagnosis of diabetes, etc…
As we continue to partner with other facilities,
such as University of Mississippi Medical Center to provide cutting-edge technology with real-time teleemergency medicine, patients at North Sunflower Medical Center have immediate access to specialists in Jackson, MS without ever leaving home.
North Sunflower Medical Center has become known throughout the Mid-South and other parts of the country as “The Little Hospital That Could.”
We have worked hard for the past 70 years to earn your trust and loyalty. We pledge to continue to offer our patients the latest medical equipment, beautifully appointed patient rooms, friendly staff, excellent care, and delicious meals. In addition, we have some of the most loyal and dedicated staff who are willing to put patients’ needs
above their own.
We want to thank our supporters, patients, community, and staff for helping make what North Sunflower Medical Center is and will continue to be. So, come join our family and see why people all over the Delta are saying, “Take me to Ruleville.”
For more than 80 years, South Sunflower County Hospital has proudly served the residents of Sunflower County and the surrounding communities. In that time, South Sunflower County Hospital has evolved into a 21stcentury medical center that has grown to become one of the leading hospitals in rural health.
Still, even with millions in upgrades and generations of staff, there is one thing that has remained constant: our mission to provide financially sustainable health care services for our community by employing dedicated and compassionate staff focused on providing excellent quality patient care and superior customer service.
We believe it’s essential that our community
receives access to the finest health care options available because it’s our home and the people we serve are our family. Whether investing in cutting-edge technology, equipment, modern facilities, physicians, specialty providers, and staff to expand and enhance our services, South Sunflower County Hospital is continuously seeking ways to meet the evolving needs of our community.
We’ve also discovered that it’s not enough to wait until patients come to us seeking relief for a medical problem; we need to provide outreach efforts, too. From health fairs with free screenings to volunteer hours donated by our staff members, we’ve led the way in helping members of our communities prevent and manage a host of con-
ditions, diseases, and illnesses. In the process, we’ve become the health care organization people turn to for assistance, education, and yes, health care.
At South Sunflower County Hospital, we are mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, neighbors and friends, teammates and coaches, students and teachers, community residents and leaders. But most of all, we are caring medical professionals who provide you with convenient high-quality care that exceeds your expectations each and every time you walk through our doors.
We are proud of our accomplishments, growth, and community involvement, and proud to be associated with the community leaders, employees,
physicians, volunteers, and others who contribute to the success of our hometown hospital and the betterment of Sunflower County and the surrounding areas.
Thank you for choosing South Sunflower County Hospital. It is our privilege to serve you.

Month is a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture and society, and has been observed annually in March in the United States since 1987. At the beginning of this month, I began my search to highlight several women in Sunflower County who have contributed to all aspects of human life for the greater good. This month, I was privileged to have communicated with change agent Jana Donahoe to share all the work she's doing with-
in the community.
As a long-time Indianola resident, she attends First Baptist Church, serves as chair and associate professor of social work at Delta State University and is a clinical social worker, grief specialist, child advocate and geriatric specialist.
She is Jana Newton Donahoe.
While pursuing postsecondary education, she received her BSSW from Mississippi College in 1985, MSW from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1989, Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in 2000 and is licensed by
the State of Mississippi as a Certified/Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Dr. Donahoe is a faithful servant and big on what God has blessed her to do. Talking to Dr. Donahoe, she told me that she tries to glorify God for all he puts on her heart to do, takes the initiative and conquers.
She loves to be involved, which led her to be a teacher, Explorer's Bible Study member, Sunday school teacher and choir member at First Baptist Church of Indianola, cofounder and president of the board of directors of the Delta Children's Advocacy Center (DCAC),
founder and director of the DSU Child Advocacy Studies certification programs, founder and volunteer/policy coordinator of the DSU Statesman's Shelf food pantry, founder and director of the DSU Interprofessional Center of Empathetic Action Simulative Education (EASE Center), "and so much more because of God's grace," she said.
“My family and church families are my heart and my most important jobs. I love teaching Explorer's Bible Study at First United Methodist Church and Sunday school at First

Baptist Church. Plus, I enjoy singing in the choir and being Christ's "salt and light" in the community,” Donahoe said.
Dr. Donahoe believes God will push her further to impact the many lives surrounding her daily, which is why she is still exploring more remarkable initiatives in her current work. One initiative is her work as the chair of the DSU BSW program, which is actively planning the development of a new substance abuse and mental health certification program at DSU for workforce development due to the opioid crisis. This will prepare students and local helping professionals to provide quality services to people who are struggling with substance use and misuse and the families who love them.
Delta Children's Advocacy Center (DCAC), which will uniquely be a part of the DSU Child Advocacy Studies Training (CAST) certification program. DCAC will provide free multi-disciplinary forensic investigation and interviewing services for all felony child abuse cases in
investigators and prosecutors. DCAC plans to develop a mock crime lab and mock courtroom to ensure that students and professionals involved in child advocacy services have trauma-informed skills.
This will be the only Child and Adult Advocacy Studies training program in the Southeast paired with its own Children's Advocacy Center, crime lab, and courtroom. Considering the needs in the Mississippi Delta, these services and training will be valuable resources.
“It is a privilege and joy to serve, teach, and be a servant leader in the community and at DSU. Unless the Lord says otherwise, I have no plans to retire anytime soon but hope to actively work to make these worthy endeavors realities so the needs of children and families in the Mississippi Delta can be met.”
"Needless to say, to God's glory, many great things are happening in my life,” Donahoe said. “The Lord has given me a vision and passion for helping others who are hurting and for educating professionals who can do the same.”
Another initiative she's working on is developing and funding the
Bolivar and Sunflower counties, trauma-informed mental health services, victim/family advocacy and support services, forensic medical services, community child abuse prevention services, and mandated reporter training.
DCAC will also serve as a learning lab for DSU CAST students participating in FORECAST simulations. Along with others, she’s developing a mobile mock crime scene for these simulations for workforce development for multi-disciplinary team
“It is a privilege and joy to serve, teach, and be a servant leader in the community and at DSU,” she said. “Unless the Lord says otherwise, I have no plans to retire anytime soon but hope to actively work to make these worthy endeavors realities so the needs of children and families in the Mississippi Delta can be met.”
Dr. Donahoe has been married to Dr. Eddie Donahoe for 38 beautiful years, she said. She's the mother of three successful children: Dr. Trey Donahoe, Megan Kaye DonahoeMarti and Drew Donahoe; and grandmother to Bailey Donahoe, who is 22 months old.
In March, Governor Tate Reeves signed Senate Bill 2212 into law. SB 2212 – “An Act to Authorize And Direct the Division of Medicaid to Provide Up To 12 Months of Continuous Coverage Postpartum,” extends postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to a full year.
Before the signing, Mississippi was the only state in the deep South to have not extended postpartum coverage beyond the minimum 60 days to 12 months, impacting nearly 20 percent of women in Mississippi who are uninsured. According to the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families and the Mississippi Center for Justice, expanding postpartum Medicaid coverage would benefit an estimated 14,000 Mississippians.
“This is a win for families in Mississippi,” said Linda Dixon, Director of Health Law at the Mississippi Center for Justice. “Mississippi will now have the opportunity to support thousands of mothers, providing the necessary critical healthcare needed for the safety of both the mother and child.”
“By expanding postpartum health coverage, Mississippi’s legislative and executive leadership took a positive step forward to protect the lives of new mothers, infants, and ultimately families,” said Vangela M. Wade, President and CEO of the Mississippi Center for Justice. “We also recognize that much more must be done to protect women in Mississippiparticularly Black women who are four times more likely to have a pregnancy-related mortality than white women in our state.”

The medical community in Sunflower County suffered immeasurable losses over the past year-plus. We wanted to pay tribute in this year’s Sunflower County Medical Guide to Robyn Wright Marlow, Dr. Katherine “Katie” Patterson, Dr. Walter “Sammy” Rose and Taylor Cordell Skelton.
Robyn Wright Marlow, North Sunflower Medical Center: A native of Charleston, Robyn passed away last February 2. Robyn received her Bachelor of Science in social work from Delta State University, according to her obituary.
Upon her graduation, she went to work at Walter B. Crook Nursing Home as a licensed social worker. She later took a job as executive director at Cleveland Personal Care before returning to the North Sunflower Medical Center family where she was the director of community outreach. Robyn was instrumental in the launch of the Sunflower County Medical Guide magazine several years ago.
Dr. Katherine “Katie” Patterson, South Sunflower County Hospital: Originally from Bryan, Texas, Dr. Patterson received her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2003 as a doctor of Allopathic Medicine, graduating magna cum laude, Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi, according to her obituary.
Dr. Patterson did her initial residency in family medicine and fellowship in obstetrics & gynecology in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2000 she shadowed a doctor in Indianola and deeply felt God’s calling to begin her medical journey in the Mississippi Delta. In 2007 Dr. Patterson became a practicing physician with Indianola Family Medical Group and South Sunflower County Hospital.
Her fifteen years of delivering babies and serving as a family physician has left an immeasurable impact on the lives of her countless patients and many friends in Sunflower County and throughout the State of Mississippi.
Dr. Patterson’s medical acuity was recognized when she was elected as president of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians in 2017.
Upon accepting the gavel, she encouraged her fellow physicians “to rekindle their love and commitment to family medicine.” In 2022, she received the John. B. Howell Memorial Award as the Family Physician of the Year from the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians.
This award recognizes a physician who provides his or her community with compassion and comprehensive medical service on a continuous basis. Her awards and medical profession affiliations on the local, state, and national levels are numerous.
Dr. Walter Samuel “Sammy” Rose, Rose Eye Clinic: A native of Indianola, Dr. Rose was accepted into optometry school at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, according to his obituary.
In 1986, he and his wife Carol moved with their 3-year-old daughter to pursue another adventure. He graduated from SCO in 1990 and moved back to Indianola. He worked for Coleman Eye Center in Greenwood for 18 years before opening his own practice, Rose Eye Clinic, in 2008.
Taylor Cordell Skelton, Delta State University: A native of Southaven, Taylor was a 2014 graduate of Delta State University where she earned her bachelor of social work degree, according to her obituary.
Taylor earned her master of social work degree from the University of Alabama and was a PhD candidate at Walden University. She worked for Delta State University where she was director of BSW Field Education, faculty senate president-elect, Phi Alpha Honor Society faculty sponsor, and was an instructor of social work beginning in 2018.
