A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS GRAHAM + MORE.

A GUIDE TO ALL THINGS GRAHAM + MORE.
It is truly an honor to be able to serve as the Mayor of Graham. My hope is that when you come to visit our community, you find it as warm and inviting as I did just over 20 years ago when I first visited Graham.
Beyond the fact that Graham has “America’s Largest Downtown Square”, or that Graham hosts the Food Truck Championship of Texas; beyond that Graham now holds a Guinness Book of World Records for the longest line of Rubber Ducks, Graham is a community filled with faithful servants – people who reach out to those in need.
Community services like Our Daily Bread, Friendship Meals, Meals on Wheels, Backpack Buddies and the food bank make sure that our citizens in need have a warm meal. Additionally, our community reaches out to those who have served our country with support services like the
Freedom Care Warrior Project and the Warrior Ranch, as well as the Crisis Center and Ni y Thri y clothes closet. Our people make an impact on the lives of everyone in our community.
To our visitors, there are so many wonderful opportunities, from the events mentioned above, to our wonderful locally owned retail shops and restaurants. Our local lakes and surrounding countryside offer numerous activities like hiking and biking, elite hunting opportunities for a variety of wild game, superior fishing in our area lakes, or just enjoying a long country drive and soaking in the scenery.
The Young County Arena has a variety of events almost every weekend. Take in a concert at the Graham Auditorium or visit the local Farmer’s Market. No ma er what your interests are, Graham offers something for you. Graham truly is where Texas Comes Home. I hope you enjoy your stay here and come back again very soon.
The City of Graham is the place “Where Texas Comes Home” and it is our hope that you feel like that if you are here for a visit or move here to join our great community.
When you come to Graham, you immediately feel a sense of warm welcome and a desire to smile along with all the friendly faces. Please take a stroll around America’s Largest Downtown Square. Take a break on one of our benches and flip through this guide.
You will find a wealth of local events to choose from and a host of friendly places to visit. If you are a rodeo fan, please visit the Young County Arena on Hwy. 380. If you enjoy fishing, or just being on the water, Lake Graham and Lake Eddleman are just a few minutes from the square and provide boating and camping opportunities.
Each May, the Lions Club Carnival on the Square provides great fun for all ages. The Rotary Club’s annual Duck Derby is a unique event in the city’s signature “Fireman’s Park” – I guarantee you have never seen anything like it.
The Christmas Stroll each December is a sight to behold. The entire square is decorated in Christmas spirit and the “Stroll” itself is a joyous celebration for family, friends, and visitors. There is never a shortage of fun and interesting things to do in our community. The great City of Graham team works hard to sustain a community that you will find safe, clean, and just downright enjoyable.
We appreciate you choosing Graham for a short visit or a place to call home. You are never a stranger in Graham, just a friend we have not met yet.
Making use of America’s largest downtown square is a feat for any event, but one the Food Truck Championship of Texas manages to overcome each year. With over 40 food trucks offering a selection of food options, the event drives thousands to Graham annually.
The first Saturday in June each year the city of Graham prepares for a day of feasting and fun on the square, showing up in droves with open wallets and empty stomachs. Each food truck competes for multiple prizes, including the $10,000 grand championship award, complete with a wrestlingstyle belt, presented by the Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Since the food truck championship started, Graham has become much more of a destination spot for not just the residents, but for people around surrounding communities and even in the Dallas-Fort Worth area— they love to come to the food truck event. It gets them down here. It gets them to see Graham and to see what our little town is all about. They also get to experience America’s largest downtown square and that’s something that not everybody can say,” CVB Manager Casyn Hardin said. “… It also brings people in to see our town, to shop at our local stores, as well as eat at our local restaurants because we all know, even if you’ve had food trucks all day long, you still want just your regular hometown food.”
From desserts to barbecue, the food trucks arrive early to serve those that show up to the event with their menu options. One of the things that Hardin said makes the event special is the relationships built with the creative culinary members of each truck.
“You really get to talk to these guys and kind of figure out what they’re all about, what their mission is as a food truck, why they want to come to the food truck championship…,” she said. “… Building relationships with them year after year after year, especially when they become a staple veteran truck, it’s really fun to see them grow in their business. They’ll come back and they’ll tell
you that they opened two more businesses, or two more locations, or two more food trucks….”
Each year, the event is judged by a series of handpicked culinary or restaurant experts who taste a signature dish chosen by each truck. Awards are dished out for Best Signature Dish, Best Truck Theme and Design, Best Food Truck Spirit, Best International Dish, Best American Cuisine, Most Unique Menu, Best BBQ and Best Dessert.
One thing Hardin said you can most definitely count on is warm June weather for the event each year. The event organizers look to offer other fun activities alongside a bite to eat in downtown Graham.
“Be sure to bring a blanket or chair, even a misting fan is great,” Hardin said. “We have children’s activities the day of the event. We have live music throughout the downtown square. We normally do about three sets of live artists… and we also have a variety of vendors.”
The event closes with some noise at the Young County Arena each year with a concert featuring multiple performers.
The event requires the help of hundreds of volunteers. Around 400 volunteers devote their time to judging food entries, helping with operations and everything in between.
“There are people such as our committee members who have the same volunteers every year, and they love coming back. They love doing it,” Hardin said. “…They think it’s absolutely incredible that they get to come here and talk to food truck owners
and kind of get to experience the behind the scenes of food truck…. It’s an awesome day.”
Whether it is competing to win the coveted grand prize and belt for $10,000, enjoying a bite to eat, relaxing outside on a summer day in Graham or just looking for a fun getaway, the Food Truck Championship of Texas offers something for everyone. It is the special nature of the event that CVB CEO Cathy Partridge said makes the organization excited each and every year.
“There’s nothing that will replace that sense of pride about where you live,” she said. “Even though the purpose is to bring people in from here and far, just to know you live here and are so proud of what goes on that you invite your family and friends to come for the weekend, … it carries the community’s heart for a long time. I think it’s intangible.”
Nestled in a cove on the west side of Possum Kingdom Lake since 1944, Fox Hollow Resort offers newly renovated cabins, an RV park, restaurant, cantina and boat docks with more amenities in the works to provide memories seven days a week, all year long.
Fox Hollow offers food and entertainment whether you want to visit for the evening or bring your family for a vacation.
Fox Hollow Resort and its sister properties are located 18 miles south of Graham on Fox Hollow Road, and off of FM 1148. The properties are under the management of Gary and Gina Latimer, who was hired and moved to the area in 2021.
Gary said, since taking over management of Fox Hollow, upgrading the cabins and keeping a consistent schedule were two things he wanted to focus on before expanding what is offered at the resort.
“They’ve all been remodeled. Cabin 17 was basically a rebuild from the ground up. That’s a beautiful cabin now. They were pretty old. I don’t know how old they were (or) how long they have gone without renovations but that was one of the first things that was done,” Gary said.
The resort offers six one-bedroom, three twobedroom and two three-bedroom cabins, along with five RV parking spots. Rentals are also available for paddle boards, paddle boats and kayaks. Gary said plans are in the works for more rentals, including boats and jet ski rentals. He said they have discussed building a pool outside of Foxy’s Cantina.
The Hungry Fox Restaurant is a popular attraction on the property and offers one of the few full bars on the west side of the lake. The restaurant is known for its catfish, but offers other items that Gary said people have grown to love. The Hungry Fox is open seven days a week.
The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Breakfast is served Friday through Sunday.
“We do a lot of different things,” Gary said. “The blackened catfish is really popular now. The blackened shrimp, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, the fajitas — people love it all. And then we do specials every week. We change it up. We’ve had burnt ends which went crazy. People loved it.”
Across from the restaurant is Foxy’s Cantina which offers an outdoor bar atmosphere and is open seasonally, as weather permits. The cantina provides a beautiful lakeside view to take in while enjoying a cold drink, frozen cocktail, or as a backdrop for the cantina’s Summertime Concert Series on the Water.
Foxy’s Stage hosts live music each Friday and Saturday during the spring through autumn, with entertainment from artists all around Texas.
Gary said the biggest thing that makes Fox Hollow Resort and its properties stand out from others on the lake is its atmosphere.
“I think it’s the atmosphere and just the way that customers are treated here,” Gary said. “It’s like a family. You see a lot of regulars coming in here now. People love it. They enjoy the music, they enjoy the specials. We’re just gradually doing new things. A lot of things are in the works to improve the place.”
Located approximately 10 miles from the Graham Downtown Square on FM 61 in Newcastle is the birthplace of Young County, the Fort Belknap Historical Site.
In addition to events hosted throughout the year, Fort Belknap is open for community members to learn about Young County’s earliest history while taking a walk around the historical site.
Fort Belknap dates back to 1851 when the fort was built to replace a fort that was at Fort Worth to protect the western edge of settlement in Texas.
“The idea, whenever they put the fort out here, was they put it 100 miles beyond the settlement line, that way there’s a buffer zone, … because they didn’t think anybody would ever move out here. As soon as the fort was built, people moved out here,” Fort Belknap Director Jim Hammond said.
History comes alive at the fort each year when it hosts the annual Fort Belknap Days, held the fourth weekend of October. The event draws schools from all over the area.
“We turn the fort back into the late 1850s to highlight what life was like on the frontier,” Hammond said. “Schools can come out, citizens can come out and they actually can see history, they can experience it — you smell it, you see it, you hear it. When you get your hands on it, you learn history in a different way.”
If you’re not a history buff, the fort might interest you with the annual Crawfish and Cannons event. Taking place each year in early April, Crawfish and Cannons begins with the Goodnight-Loving Run in the morning and continues throughout the day at the fort with live music and a crawfish boil. The event also features cannon firing on the hour, children’s activities and more.
“This is a way to get those people who don’t necessarily care about history to a historic site,” Hammond said. “We also have cannons going off. So that way, we’re not losing the aspect that this is a historical site.”
Hammond said he plans on hosting historical symposiums in the future. An event or other historical idea would be the theme for the symposium, where historians would gather and present their research on the topic in a setting that is open to the public.
Aside from the recently upgraded museum, families are welcome to visit the park and have a picnic under the grape arbor, which dates back to 1936 when Fort Belknap became a historical site. Burl Cox donated grape vines from his nearby property and grapes still grow from those trunks to this day. The original arbor was replaced in 2019 and 2022 to allow future generations to enjoy the 80-plus-year-old grape trunks.
Fort Belknap is open year-round for the community to visit the county’s historical roots.
“Young County would not exist as we know it without Fort Belknap. Whenever the fort was put here, it brought people here, that’s when the organization of the area started,” Hammond said. “…This was a major crossroads in north-northwest Texas. So everything centered around (the fort) today, the reason that we exist the way we are today, is because of the fort.”
Offering more than meets the eye, the Young County Arena is becoming the hub for events in Graham and Young County.
YCA is a multi-purpose event center, offering 277,000 total square feet of space. The main arena boasts seating for 2,500. The facility boasts over 10,000 square feet of space in the main foyer for vendors to set up during various events.
Young County Arena Manager, Toni Elliott, took over operations in 2019, returning to an industry she has loved since a child growing up in Graham. The arena, Elliott said, hosts family-friendly events that are mostly free of charge every weekend except for holidays.
“It’s something to do, everything is familyfriendly and a lot of our events are free admission. Most of our events are horse or rodeo related… ,” she said. “We want to further this industry and we want a place for the kids to be able to get started, grow, get better and carry on this legacy.”
The arena hosts events for the Texas High School Rodeo Association Region III, as well as the Kids Junior Rodeo Association. YCA also hosts the Young County Junior Livestock Show, which takes place each January.
Elliott said the arena provides a comfortable environment year-round with events outside of rodeo as well.
“It is a family-friendly environment. We have our concession stand and… we also have fans as far as keeping the place cool and then our heaters to keep it warm. It’s comfortable and welcoming…,”
she said. “As far as events, we have a lot of exciting events that vary from monster trucks to dirt bikes, if they’re not into the equine industry or the rodeo industry.”
YCA also hosts the concert that caps off the annual Food Truck Championship of Texas, held the first Saturday of June each year.
Elliott said the back arena is often available during the week for riding or as a place to host riding lessons with a private instructor.
“It’s (open) during the daytime for anyone in the community to come to ride their horse in the back arena. Unless it’s of course going to be a private rental where no one else can ride or they’re going to use lights or tractors, then there is a rental cost for that. But just to come ride more, when we’re not doing something out here during the daytime, it’s free to the community,” Elliott said.
Whether it is the red hue of the neon lights or the calm, down-to-earth atmosphere of the venue, The Middleton hotel has established itself as a premier location on the Graham downtown square.
The 16-room shipping container hotel was the brainchild of Matt Hughes and Griffin Phillips that became a reality in 2022. The idea blossomed in the mind of the duo when residents in Graham wanted two problems solved, housing and hotels.
“We’d been talking for a while about looking to try to address some affordable housing and it kind of morphed into looking at other real estate options and investments,” Hughes said. “Graham needed hotel rooms and we came up with this concept and executed it.”
The two designed and outfitted the rooms and courtyard area and enlisted Eleanor Burkett to take over the food and beverage concept, called the Middle Sister. They knew the look they wanted and executed the design from their concept. An important part of the design was the bar area adjacent to the hotel.
“It was important to us to develop the space how we wanted it, because this is our identity –what the space looks like,” Hughes said. “It was a fun project, I’ll say that. Every project has hurdles and presents problems, but I would say, for the most part, I had a lot of fun with this. It was a creative outlet that I didn’t have before that I’ve always enjoyed and so it was fun to be able to do that.”
Using shipping containers as the base for the rooms helped the duo to plan and budget effectively for the project while establishing a unique look.
“Shipping containers provide an industrial, modern element and you can pair that really well with this building (which) was built in 1896. You can pair the new and the old really well together,” Hughes said. “We knew exactly how much they would cost, we had a pretty good idea how long it would take and so when you’re trying to execute a property like this it just made sense to utilize some prefab construction.”
Each room contains high-end linens, shampoos, conditioners and soaps, as well as monogrammed custom robes. Another unique aspect within the rooms is each features an artist’s original works, including paintings and sculptures.
“Each room features a different artist (and) the art is for sale in the rooms,” Hughes said. “There’s a QR code that’s in each room that’s kind of etched stainless steel. When you scan it, it shows the artist that’s featured in that room. So it gives you a headshot, a bio and then how to get in touch with the artist to purchase art, or commission a piece.”
Both Hughes and Phillips were members of the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center board and wanted to make art a major aspect of the project. Each room features white linens and walls to make the artist’s works pop off the wall. Artists, from Graham to Australia, are featured in each of the 16 containers.
The hotel is available on all major booking websites, but Hughes said the best way to get a room is to go to the hotel’s website at hotelmiddleton. com.
“Pick your dates, book the room, pay for it and everything in this concept is pretty much completely automated when it comes to the hotel aspect. So when you book a room, you’ll immediately get... a welcome email and a key code to where you just go straight to your room, put in the key code and you have access to your room and you don’t have to check out,” Hughes said. “Checkout is at 11 o’clock the next day and check-in is at (3 p.m.) If you need something earlier, there’s a comment section when you book and we’ll get that message and we’ll try to accommodate you if we need to.”
The two founders said the community and hotel occupants have shared positive experiences regarding the venue. Aside from establishing a new location on the downtown square, Hughes said he hopes the venue can give back to the community.
“We hope that it invites more commerce here on the square. When people are spending the night anywhere, they’re getting out and they’re eating at restaurants and they’re shopping at retail spaces and they’re utilizing what the square has to offer,” he said. “We hope that encourages some growth on our square for sure.”
The Library of Graham serves as a community hub for learning, entertainment, programs, networking and culture. Contained within its walls are close to 70,000 volumes of books, audiobooks, eBooks, eAudio books and magazines.
The library seeks to provide the community with support for early childhood literacy, education, cultural appreciation, economic development and more. Library of Graham Director Kelly LaFarge said the library is primarily used for recreational reading, but serves many other purposes.
“We’re here for the patrons and their recreational reading and then to service the other part of our community. We’re economical for the printing, faxing, emailing and copying. We’re kind of a social support as well as recreation support, in my opinion,” she said. “… Everybody’s expected to function through emails, faxes. For our community, there’s a big kind of a big disparity between finances and groups, so we do a lot of … teaching people how to do emails, how to attach (documents), how to forward copies, those kinds of things.”
The library offers many services through its website at libraryofgrahamtx.org. On the website, visitors can search the library for books by keyword, author, title, subject or series.
The services offered by the facility can also be found on the website, such as community and children’s programs. The website also features many digital resources for visitors.
“(It) helps people be a little more self-sufficient and independent. Getting on there to find your tax forms or if you want to do your own genealogy research, you don’t have to wait for us to open the door, so to speak. You can just get on there and investigate those things. Whereas before, you had to come look at a book, or for us to tell you. So now, hopefully, this will help empower people to get on and make discoveries and find some cool information,” LaFarge said.
Each summer, the library provides the Summer Reading Program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade to help alleviate the summer reading slump. In September through May, the facility gets younger children engaged in a habit of reading with preschool storytime.
“During our toddler storytime, it’s nice for the parents to be able to have some networking, some adult time,” LaFarge said. “If you stay home with your kids, you get a little isolated sometimes. So that gives them an opportunity to socialize, as well as introduce their kids to socialization, also. It’s good for the kids, but it’s good for the parents, too. I think that’s a pretty important thing.”
Library cards at the facility open up not just borrowing books, but allow access to digital media, electronic databases, wifi access, Libby eBooks and more. The Libby application is an eBook and eAudio resource provided by the library for all library card holders.
“Sadly, CDs and DVDs are kind of a dying technology. It’s fading (and) it won’t go away completely. We still have a lot of patrons that need that resource. But what’s so great about Libby is that, first of all, you can put the app on your phone, you can put it on your reader (and) you can put it on your computer,” LaFarge said. “It takes the place of those bulky CDs. You can run Libby through your app on your car, listen to audiobooks. For people with ocular challenges, you can increase the font on it as well, so that’s a really cool thing. … Our friends group sponsored magazines as well so we’ve got a bunch of magazines on there.”
In the past the library held one book sale per year for donated books as a fundraiser. The book sale program has changed to be held indefinitely at the library.
“We were going to do it once a month and we were going to just put it on the carts over here in the library, but we put them out just to test run it and it’s been hugely successful. We make money every week on our used book sale. So now we’re offering the books for sale every day,” LaFarge said. “The girls do a great job keeping it fresh and restocked and everything. So there’s always something changing there. If you really, really want to have it, you can just pay 50 cents or $1 and it is yours to keep.”
LaFarge said the facility and what it offers shows the community’s priority to education and literacy. She said her goal when starting at the library last year was to create more public programs and create a sense of community at the library.
“With what we call those passive programs, there’s activities, not just reading. If you don’t want to read, you don’t have to read. You could do your puzzle, you can bird watch, you could play chess with a friend…. So that gives you something else to do,” she said. “Then (there is) self empowering the patrons to be able to find their books since we’ve reorganized into the genres. That’s been hugely successful. (And then) putting those sources on the computer so they can be self-empowered and find some information for themselves. You know, really kind of being teachers helping our patrons be self-sufficient and empower themselves to feel more confident about tackling those technology resources.”
Whether it is to stop and relax or take a weekend family trip, Graham’s park system includes a multitude of outdoor facilities for a getaway.
Within the city are ireman’s Park, Shawnee Park, Shawnee Springs Park, isher Street Park, ictory Park, Melissa Park, Pool Park and ake Eddleman Park. Outside the city, but adjacent to ake Graham, is indley Park.
Graham Parks and Recreation Board President Alex Heartfield said parks make up an important part of the community.
“It promotes an active, healthy outdoor lifestyle for our current citizens, but it also brings people to our community,” he said. “If you think about our surrounding communities, we have an outstanding park structure. We will be bringing people from those towns to our parks to spend money in our town and eat. They’ll go run through a drive-thru and pick up food to go eat at the park. They’ll come to our events that we have at the park like the uck erby, the Spivey Hill Challenge. Maybe it’ll promote additional events at our parks. I think it’s critical not only for our local citizens to have an outdoor space to promote an active healthy lifestyle, but it also is a big tourism component as well.”
ireman’s Park is the primary recreational park facility located at Hwy. 6 and 61. The park encompasses over 8 acres, excluding Salt Creek. The park features a road enclosing an open field, which doubles as a jogging track. A suspension bridge allows visitors to travel over Salt Creek. Those looking for a game of disc golf can find a nine-hole course also included within the park.
Other amenities at ireman’s Park include a children’s playground, benches, picnic tables, parking, R hookups, baseball softball fields, grilling and kitchen facilities and a restroom and pavilion.
Two other major parks in Graham are Shawnee Park and Shawnee Springs Park, which are adjacent to each other and located near the Library of Graham.
Shawnee Park encompasses 4.5 acres and Shawnee Springs Park encompasses 1.5 acres. The parks combined offer picnic tables, playgrounds and numerous shaded trees right off main street through Graham.
The city of Graham is looking to improve Fireman’s Park and other parks using $1.3 million in funding received from the Brazos River Authority. The Parks and Recreation Board has been working to make those funds go as far as possible by applying for grants through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The city is moving forward with phase one of their parks improvement plan which includes improvements at Fireman’s Park. Those improvements will be renovations to the two bathrooms to be ADA accessible, upgrades to ADA accessible playground equipment, the addition of two dog parks, improvements to the Old Ag Barn and the addition of nine disc golf holes and another 18-hole course.
“(For future phases) we’re going to continue to seek community input on features that they would like to see and look at where we can incorporate those features in our existing park structure, whether it be at Shawnee Park, Fireman’s Park or the new park. We’ll continue to look at the playground equipment at some of our other parks,” Heartfield said. “If there’s any salvageable equipment from what is at Fireman’s Park, it may go to replace some of the older, more dated, equipment at some of the other parks if it can be safely reinstalled. … There are some parks that need some additional work done to them and we will continue to monitor those and work on those.”
Phase two of the parks improvement project includes multi-use fields at the BRA property along Salt Creek, a pavilion and an amphitheater.
“The biggest thing that I’m looking forward to is this multi-use ballfield concept,” Heartfield said. “The biggest benefit that I see is that it’s going to allow our groups, like the Graham Soccer Association or the Graham Youth Football Association, to host tournaments…. If you can make it a two-day tournament, it fills up your hotels, fills up your restaurants. So having those facilities for football, baseball, softball, soccer, I think that’s a big thing. The more that we can do in that area, … the more we can make that area a central point of activity, the better it is for everybody.”

When it comes to cuisine in Texas, barbecue reigns supreme. Graham High School adds some flavor to its curriculum, outside of the classroom, with the BBQ Smokin’ Steers and PitSteers competition barbecue teams. Coached by local barbecue restaurant owner, Brendan Locker, both teams compete across the state as part of High School BBQ Inc.
The Smokin’ Steers recently completed their fifth year of competition and was the first of two teams that now represent GHS. The newest addition, PitSteers, began competing in 2022. The two teams share a healthy competition with each other as they both compete in the same High School BBQ regional events, including their home cook-off on the downtown square each November.
Since the team is composed of members of the Steers soccer team, it competes outside of the soccer schedule. The team also prepares food at the Graham Steers football games and caters for various events throughout the year to hone their skills for competition. Locker said with more students participating next year, he expects the teams to be able to improve their skills through more competitions.
“Next year, I’m gonna have that new group coming in plus my group of freshmen and we’ll be able to do a lot more regionals going forward and that’s where you get your experience,” Locker said.
Regional competitions provide an opportunity for other schools of varying size and backgrounds. Competing against more than 200 other high school programs in the state, Locker said the team has experienced a lot of success as it continues to grow. The Smokin’ Steers also had the opportunity to compete on a global level in November 2022 at the World HSBBQ Championship which took place alongside the 2022 World Food Championships at Fair Park in Dallas.
“You can cook all day in your yard and everybody’s gonna say they love it, but when they put a plate of food in front of a judge, it’s a different story. It’s won by barbecue and they have to learn how to cook competition-style barbecue. That is the trick right there,” Locker said. “You’ve got anywhere from a 20-year-old to a 70-year-old that you’re putting a plate of food in front of. They don’t know who’s … cooked it and they’re judging it by (its) appearance, taste and tenderness.”
Members of the Smokin’ Steers and PitSteers teams are provided with the opportunity to earn scholarship money to attend Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Austin or Boulder, Colorado. The state competition as well as each regional competition offers scholarship money for the top-three finishing teams.
At the regional competitions, the grand championship team earns a $3,000 scholarship per team member. Members on the second-place team get $2,000 each and third-place team members receive $1,500 each. Locker said his son Landan, who graduates this May after four years in the program, will be attending school in Austin with the help of $18,000 in scholarships from competing during his high school career.
“It’s great to see how we’re all learning to cook. We’ll see other teams just push a button, sit on their phones and just wait,” Landan said. “We’re out here shoving the wood in bare-handed, working with each other, talking, checking the heat every once in a while, mixing different flavors together.”
Whether or not the students pursue culinary arts after high school, Brendan said participating in high school barbecue provides lessons that go beyond the classroom.
“(It teaches) life skills. They learn how to interact with the public during caterings, learn how to be personable, a good steward of the community,” Locker said. “Whether they go to culinary school or not, they’ve learned something through their career in high school that when they leave home, they’ll be able to feed people on their own, or, you know, not have to worry about going to McDonald’s because they can cook themselves. So life skills that a lot of these kids don’t really get that really punches home.”

Over the last year, I have learned many valuable lessons, both positive and negative. But the most enlightening, thought-provoking lesson I learned is that behind each Chamber member, countless people are impacted –customers, employees, families, friends, and neighbors. And here is why:
• Each Chamber member is a stakeholder in the success of Graham and our surrounding area.
• Each Chamber member is a long-term visionary.

Winners are nominated by members of the community. All nominations are then reviewed by a committee consisting of chamber board members who select the final winners.

Hi, y’all! My name is Cayley Strickland, and I am the Graham Chamber of Commerce, manager! I am originally from Jacksboro, and a proud graduate of Oklahoma State University. I found my way to the Graham Chamber as the administrative assistant in April 2022. A few months later, I had the opportunity to move into the manager position, and the rest is history.
The role of the Chamber is to promote commerce in our local community by supporting businesses in their endeavors. We are truly blessed with the quality and the quantity of small businesses in Graham, and it is my honor to work with them as Chamber Members.
The Chamber hosts many events for Chamber Members and the community throughout the year, including Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, Possum Pedal, the Lighted Christmas Parade & Stroll, and so much more. These events are only possible with the support of our Chamber Members, but they also serve as an opportunity for our members to connect with the community. New and exciting things are coming in 2023, and we look forward to growing alongside Graham!
Whether you are an individual, a non-profit, a small company, or a large company, there is room for you at the Chamber of Commerce! Give us a call at 940-549-3355 to learn more!

Rooted in a level of community pride and culture that runs deeper and stronger than the Brazos River, our core philosophy has never wavered- Graham takes care of Graham. Established with our founding fathers in 1872, there is a quality of life offered in our community that is unparalleled and available to all who seek to find it.
There is an ancient proverb that states “if you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This is the mentality of our community. Together, we can accomplish much more than what we can on our own. Our citizens never waiver to rise to the occasion to extend a neighborly hand, come to the aid of others, celebrate each other in times of success and triumph, lift others up in times of need, and always maintain a sense of pride and compassion for our town. This communal approach is what defines us at our very core, and what continues to set Graham apart.
It is truly a rarity for a small town such as Graham to bolster the high level of quality of life and amenities found here, and it is only made possible by the commitment of our citizens. It is what makes Graham the greatest place in the world to start a business, raise a family, plant roots, invest, get connected, give back, make an impact, find peace and rest, and call home.
The legacy of Graham is built on the shoulders of those who have gone before us and laid the foundation of community pride for future generations. We are one people focused on the betterment of our town, and we welcome any and all who come to share the same sentiment and responsibility. The future is bright in Graham, America.

The history of Graham, Texas has always been wrapped up in its people, places and events. In the early 1860s, Col. Edwin Smith Graham and his brother, Gustavus Adolphus Graham visited Texas as shareholders in the Texas Emigration and Land Company. In 1871, the two brothers purchased a salt works on Salt Creek from Absalom Bobo Gant. Edmonia Graham, the wife of G.A. Graham mentioned in her first letter back home to Kentucky of the Warren Wagon Train Massacre that had recently occurred before their arrival that year.
At the time, all the territory was populated with buffalo, and the fact that those animals seemed to prefer this section prompted the Graham brothers to observe it would be one of the finest cattle raising districts in the entire state.
In 1872, G.A. Graham and his chainman, A.B. Gant began to survey and plot the town site with unusually wide streets, large blocks, and spacious lots, with the name of the town, of course, coming from that of its two founders.
Young County fell apart in 1865, but was reorganized in 1874. An election in the county selected Graham as the new county seat.
The Graham Leader, owned and edited by Major J.W. Graves, printed its first edition on August 16, 1876. This publication is still in existence and is the oldest publication in Northwest Texas. The Leader is also the oldest business institution in Young County.
In 1876, Graham’s first subscription school began with an enrollment of 50 students with J.H. Brantley serving as superintendent.
On December 24, 1876, Rev. Charles Holt Dobbs found five persons who were Presbyterians and organized the first Presbyterian Church in Graham. This congregation of twelve built a small building on south Oak Street which was destroyed by a wind just before completion. Undaunted, the congregation secured a second lot at the corner of First and Elm Street and completed their building in 1877 at a cost of $1,000. The Presbyterians generously offered the use of their building to other churches until they could complete their own buildings.

On February 15-16, 1877, forty cattlemen of North and West Texas gathered in Graham and formed the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas. The name was changed to Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association [TSCRA] in 1921. The organizational meeting was held under a large oak tree near the northwest corner of the downtown public square.
One of the occurrences in Graham has been the development of oil and gas resources in Young County. The first gas well in Texas was drilled by the Graham brothers near the salt works in the early 1870s.
By 1915, hotel lobbies and cafes were the gathering places in Graham where men were anxious to get in on the wealth offered by an oil producing well. In 1930, the McCloud well near Graham blew oil throughout the countryside for miles. High school boys were allowed out of class for two days to dig ditches around the well to ease the hazard of fire and to save the oil.
Graham celebrated their 150th year of existence in 2022 and continues to be a prosperous, growing city of about 9,000 people. We’re always ready to tell and re-tell our stories of the people, places and events of our community. Just ask us!
