No Detail Is Too Small

Volunteers at the Iron Spike Model Train Museum, Washington, MO, spend countless hours constructing and maintaining the displays contained inside the 10,000 sq. ft. facility. They carefully research the projects, reproducing each detail with accuracy. Their efforts establish the museum as a leader in all aspects of the hobby. Train scales from G to TY are on display and running throughout the museum.

Some modelers work to reproduce existing rural or city scenes. Volunteers at Iron Spike create fantasy towns containing carnivals, demolition derbies, a working cattle ranch, power plants, saw mills, a drive in movie and firefighters putting out a charred home.

Several of the volunteers have worked to create videos of the layouts within the museum. Videos run that have been shot from the inside of the locomotive as the train moves down the track. Other videos show trains passing through the detailed scenery.

One of our high school volunteers added sound effects to the different displays. He worked with two of his high school riends completing this wonderful addition. We are proud to welcome the next generation model train hobbyist.

From the entrance, the main train hall appears to be a vast, sparkling city. Upon closer examination, provided by the unique peninsula design of the museum, the displays come to life. Volunteers love to tell tall tales about imagined events at different locations throughout the layouts.

Although you can see the overall splendor of the museum in an hour or two, Iron Spike suggests you might plan a longer visit. Younger visitors become entranced in the children’s room where hands-on train operation is the rule of the day. They can push wooden trains over bridges and through towns, and have a chance to be an engineer and run their own trains.

Summer Edition 2023 - Hermann Area Visitor 13

Discovering New Haven, Missouri will bring you into a small, quaint, and historic riverfront town that is enriched and deep in generational tradition. It sits in the heart of an emerging wine country of the midwest. Surrounded by the soft, rolling hills and beautiful, majestic trees; where their leaves can hold the deep lush greenery during the summer. In the Fall, the colors of the leaves change into the colors of yellow, red, and orange that are as vast as a morning sunrise or sunset.

Over the years, the Missouri river was used, primarily, for commercial purposes for the survival of riverfront towns. As highways and railroads developed, it changed the purposes of the river But one thing has remained true, the river has provided a resource for family and friends to gather on their boats or to enjoy the banks of the river.

Our historic downtown region has seen many changes throughout the years and this year is no exception. There has been a new, revitalizing facelift with new streets and sidewalks. With a mix of established and new businesses; as well as events being added back through the New Haven Area Chamber of Commerce that will hopefully draw the locals and tourists alike.

Navigating and sight-seeing through the breathtaking landscape of our historically small riverfront town, will leave you nothing but wanting to discover more of what New Haven has to offer

Rev Your Engines for a Bygone Era: Fuel Your Soul and Your Car at Gasconade County's Last Bastions of the Great American Roadside!

In this rat race we call life, we stumble through the days, blind to the strength we possess in our crumpled bills and jingling coins. The power to shape our towns and economies lies in the most mundane of transactions, like the fuel we pump into our rusting chariots. In Gasconade County, Missouri, three local gas stations — Scheperkoetter's General Store, Old Dutch Mill, and Rosebud General Store and Gas Station — stand like weary sentinels along the dusty Highway 50, their faded signs calling out to the tired souls looking for a respite from the open road. Located along Gasconade County's de facto Mason-Dixon line of Highway 50, these establishments connect residents to their county, community, and a bygone era of community economics.

Scheperkoetter's General Store: Where Time Stands Still Since 1893

In the shadows of Mt. Sterling lies Scheperkoetter's General Store, a relic from 1893, has been a cornerstone of Mt. Sterling started selling gas in the late 1920s when the bridge over the murky Gasconade River was built. A monument to simpler times offering a true general store experience with a deli, grocery section, post office, bulk fuel, and feed and fertilizer for local farmers. With customers trickling in every day, it's the kind of place that binds the locals to their past like a rusty chain, with every fill-up a testament to their collective history. With hundreds of daily returning customers, it's the exceptional customer service that keeps people coming back. By supporting Scheperkoetter's, locals are not only filling their tanks but also preserving a piece of Gasconade County history.

Old Dutch Mill: A Gas Station with a Side of Heartburn and Reminiscence

The Old Dutch Mill in Drake opened its creaky doors in 1937, a strange concoction of gas station, greasy-spoon diner, and tavern, inspired by some distant mill in Holland. The current owner keeps the spirit alive with weekly home-cooked meals that lure in the lost and hungry like flies to a carcass. With its motley crew of regulars who gather to drink coffee and grumble about local politics, the Old Dutch Mill stands as a living testament to the value of human connection in this god awful world and is a testament to the value of community connections and customer service.

Rosebud General Store and Gas Station: A Flashback to a Time When Service Wasn't Dead

With a nostalgic touch, the Rosebud General Store and Gas Station offers full-service fueling, a dying breed in this age of selfservice. It's the kind of place where they still check your oil and clean your filthy windshield while you sit there like some lazy king. And, as if that wasn't enough, they have hand-dipped ice cream to sweeten the deal. The Rosebud General Store keeps the flame of community-focused businesses flickering, even as the winds of change threaten to snuff it out, by boasting a warm atmosphere, friendly service, and unique offerings, including hand-dipped ice cream Rosebud General Store and Gas Station is a beacon in a turmoil filled world.

Filling Up at the Altar of Local Economy

When you patronize these independent gas stations, you're not just buying gas — you're pumping lifeblood into the veins of your community. These local joints face an uphill battle against the corporate titans that dominate the industry with their tax breaks and economies of scale. By choosing to spend their hard-earned cash at these roadside shrines, the residents of Gasconade County keep their communities alive and kicking.

Each time you reach for your wallet, you have the power to shape the world around you. Supporting places like Scheperkoetter's General Store, Old Dutch Mill, and Rosebud General Store and Gas Station is like casting a vote for the kind of existence you want to lead, one where the past and present collide in a beautiful mess of gasoline, cheap coffee, and the human spirit.

As you make your way down the storied Highway 50, stop by these ancient landmarks and breathe in the spirit of Gasconade County. Take a moment to appreciate the people who keep these places alive, and remember that when you choose to fill up your tank or savor a hand-dipped ice cream cone, you're investing in the future of this place you call home.

So, next time you're driving down that dusty highway, and the needle of your gas gauge flirts with empty, think twice about where you stop to refuel. Remember the power you have in the simple act of choosing where to spend your money. Pull into Scheperkoetter's General Store, Old Dutch Mill, or Rosebud General Store and Gas Station, and feel the heartbeat of your community.

It's in these seemingly insignificant decisions that we can affect real change, as we cast our lot with the underdogs, the dreamers, and the survivors. By supporting these local gas stations, we're investing in the lives of the people who make up the backbone of Gasconade County, and in doing so, we keep the spirit of a bygone era alive and breathing.

So let us raise a dirty glass to these roadside oases, these refuges from the desolation of the open road. For as long as the weary traveler seeks respite, may these gas stations stand tall, their flickering neon signs a beacon of hope amidst the encroaching darkness. And in that hope, may we find the strength to forge ahead and create a better world, one fill-up at a time.

A Stroll Through Time and Leather: The Tale of Saleigh Mountain Leather Company

If you've ever thought that your life was missing a touch of artisanal craftsmanship and a whiff of fine leather, you're in luck! Tucked away in the charming heart of Hermann, Missouri, lies a hidden gem that is guaranteed to leave you feeling like you've stepped into a delightful leather wonderland - Saleigh Mountain Leather Company. This unique establishment, founded by Sally Borzillo and her daughter Molly Monahan, is celebrated for its meticulously crafted leather products, cobbler services, and a commitment to preserving the region's leatherworking heritage. Let's dive into the rich history, philosophy, and offerings of Saleigh Mountain Leather Company and discover what makes it an irresistible part of the Hermann community.

A Leather-Clad History:

Founded by Sally Borzillo, a passionate artisan who shared a profound appreciation for Hermann's rich history and tradi-

working heritage alive and kicking (quite literally). Sally had established a custom leather business in 1973 but no longer had a storefront. Enter Sally’s daughter Molly (Monahan), who left behind thoughts of beauty school to pursue a career as a motorcycle mechanic, one of the first females to do so at Linn Tech. Surrounded by leather, Molly knew another siren was calling her but she still had some seeds to sow. Molly left the biker life to become a vegetable farmer before she realized home is where the heart is. In 2011, Sally and Molly teamed up as a mother-daughter duo to open Saleigh Mountain Leather Company on 4th Street in downtown Hermann. The company's name, Saleigh Mountain, evokes a sense of picturesque landscapes, much like Sally's admiration for the scenic beauty that surrounds Hermann.

Craftsmanship, Quality, and a Whole Lot of Leather:

With the tenacity of a determined mule, Saleigh Mountain Leather Company is committed to craftsmanship and quality. They source their leather from local, domestic, and exotic suppliers, ensuring that each product is crafted with the finest materials - and, of course, a whole lot of love. Many non-leather items come from the relationships the duo has built over the years, making their store a one-stop-shop for most of your needs, like a good general store. By working closely with local producers, this extraordinary company promotes sustainability, supports the regional economy, and helps preserve the area's unique agricultural practices (not to mention, cows everywhere are grateful for the attention to detail).

A Buffet of Artisanal Leather Delights:

If you thought leather was only for shoes and belts, think again! Saleigh Mountain Leather Company offers a diverse range of artisanal leather products and services that celebrate the craftsmanship, artistry, and heritage of Hermann:

Handcrafted Leather Bags and Accessories: Be the envy of your friends with a stylish and impeccably crafted leather bag, wallet, or belt that whispers, "I have excellent taste."

Custom Leatherworks: If you want to flaunt your unique style, Saleigh Mountain Leather Company has got your back (and your front). They specialize in creating custom leather pieces tailored to your specific needs and preferences.

Cobbler Services and Boot Care: Ever had a favorite pair of boots that needed some serious TLC? The skilled artisans at Saleigh Mountain Leather Company can make your boots last for decades with their expert cobbler services. From resoling and reheeling to repairing and refurbishing, they'll have your boots looking (and feeling) as good as new.

Leather Care for Farm Items and Saddles: Farm life can be tough on leather, but don't worry - the craftsmen at Saleigh Mountain Leather Company are here to help. Bring in your farmitems, saddles, or any other leather products, and they'll nurse them back to health in no time.

Artisanal Gifts and Home Décor: Need something to spruce up your home? Look no further! Their handcrafted gifts and home décor are inspired by the rustic charm of Hermann.

A Community of Leather Lovers:

Saleigh Mountain Leather Company is more than just a local business; it's a proud supporter of the Hermann community. They actively partner with local events and initiatives to promote the region's rich history, culture, and traditions. In the spirit of "leatherhood," they foster connections with other local businesses and artisans. One key way of showing their support for the community is through their "A Thousand Ripples" board. On this board are vouchers that are there for individuals in need, first responders, veterans, and anyone the store thinks can use a boost. Patrons are encouraged to contribute ripples to their board as a way to pay it forward in the community. So, if you can, please donate a Ripple of Hope, and if you need to use one, just ask Molly.

So, if you find yourself in Hermann, Missouri, and crave an experience that is equal parts culture, craftsmanship, and a celebration of all things leather, make a beeline for Saleigh Mountain Leather Company. With their unwavering dedication to quality, sustainability, and community, this local company embodies the passion and spirit that define Hermann. It's an essential stop for anyone visiting or residing in Hermann, whether you're a leather enthusiast or simply appreciate fine craftsmanship. Molly offers the following encouragement to stop in and say hi, “As our old school shoe shop sign reads, “sales and service” that’s really what we’re all about! Our goal is to make high quality leather goods, fix or modify your old kicks, and provide other American-made, and locally-made products whenever we can! We make it, we fix it, we guarantee it!”

The Kindness of A German immigrant changed the Life of a Family from Mississippi

“Remember, there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” —Scott

In 2019 an unusual public invitation was made to the German American and African American community in St. Louis to share stories about their interaction with each other before, during or after the Civil War. This community-wide appeal was inspired by the publication, German Immigrant Abolitionists: Fighting for a Free Missouri written by Dr. Sydney Norton in collaboration with the Deutschheim State Historic Site. Little-known details revealed the fact that many German immigrants supported the emancipation of slaves and worked diligently to end slavery. We learned that Germans and African Americans worked together to start what is Lincoln University. People such as Judge Arnold Krekel, George Hussmann worked on the writing committee of the emancipation decree. Rev. Josef Anton Rieger married slaves who wanted a Christian ceremony though this was against State law. Some German immigrants, such as August Boernstein even joined the Colored Infantry as military officers wanting to help Black troops get the training, they needed to serve their country.

Equipped with some of this extraordinary history it was clear that we might learn things we had never heard before, if we dug deeply and asked the public to tell us their stories. What we learned was extraordinary! There were slaves that spoke German, and some German immigrant families taught their slaves to read and write-one notable person who received this benefit was George Washington Carver who was owned by German Americans.

So, what about relationships closer to our times? What did we learn from German Americans and African Americans. In this article I want to focus on the story shared by Armentha Russell in St. Louis. Armentha is well into her eighties and is the former Superintendent of Schools in Wellston, a municipality in St. Louis County. Fair to say that she is an accomplished educator and administrator working with children that largely come from families that most often work in lower salary jobs. In spite of the challenge, she felt her skills were needed most in Wellston. When you talk to Armentha Russell about her families experience with one German immigrant, she speaks very warmly about a gentleman named Walter Kopp. Here are her own words about the kindness of Walter Knopp and his impact on her family.

When I explored the common history of African Americans and German immigrants it brought back many wonderful memories of my late father, JOSEPH PAUL MITCHELL and his first employer, after he came to St. Louis in 1917 from Greenville, Mississippi. My father, Joseph P. Mitchell, was born on July 27, 1908 in Greenville, Miss. He came to St. Louis with his older brother, Bennie. He gained employment as a laborer at U- SAN- O Company, 1800 Chouteau Ave. in St. Louis. This company made and distributed mops, brooms and sanitary supplies to many different businesses in the metropolitan St. Louis area. His employer Mr. Knopp, a German Immigrant, developed a bond with Joseph, an African American. As a result of this bond and dedicated hard work by Joseph, he advanced in the company and was promoted.

After a period of time working at U-SAN-O, Mr. Knopp came to Joseph and offered the opportunity for him to start his own business. Mr. Knopp did so because of major medical issues, he was going to retire and close the company. He was willing to provide equipment, materials, etc. and clients for Joseph to start his own mop-making and supplies business in the basement of his home. Joseph became the owner of Royal Mop Manufacturing Company because of his good friend and former employer, Mr. Knopp, a German immigrant. Father successfully operated his company until he retired because of illness in 1980. Mr. Knopp, a German immigrant, made a tremendous impact on the life of Joseph Mitchell an African American and his family.

Armentha acknowledges that the kindness of Mr. Knopp and the hard work of her father contributed to the family’s success and prosperity.

I Am Local Blondie’s Dolls and Toy Shop

I Am Local Blondie’s Dolls and Toy Shop

Iamjanet Melzer. My mother, Blondie Haeberle, began collecting dolls in 1977 when her granddaughter, Johanna, was born. With her family, their collection includes more than 1000 dolls, of which over 500 are currently displayed in the Gallery. The dolls range from antique German bisque to modern Collectible Barbies, character dolls, and whatever struck Blondie’s fancy.

Blondie was born in Americus MO in the 1920’s and married Rubin Haeberle of Case MO. They farmed together and enjoyed making wine, hunting and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. !

Blondie collected the dolls everywhere she went, including dolls from vacations to Alaska, Hawaii, Germany and Italy, and the Cardinal cruises.

Blondie had kept her collection in their home, mostly in boxes stacked high in spare rooms. She decided in 2014 that she would like to share the collection with the public, so in April 2016, at the age of 90, she opened Blondie’s Dolls in Hermann MO, making these beautiful dolls available to the public to enjoy.

it off but my, they are especially beautiful this year.

The rst Friday Walk went well last week. What a better look than artists lining the streets of such a beautiful town. I think it makes the town cozy and comfortable.

Blondie passed away in August 2019 at the age of 93.

Blondie’s Dolls and Toys is still going strong just like Blondie herself. A fun and happy attitude will welcome you to this amazing gift store. Boys and girls alike will nd fun items for play. There are toys for young babies up to pre-teen years. All toys are German made, a unique feature for the little German town of Hermann. Blondie’s Dolls has Playmobil Police Cars, Firetrucks, Ambulances, Dump Trucks, Trash Trucks, Helicopters, and even a Convertible for cruising around town! Blondie’s also carries Käthe Kruse items as well as dresses for American Girls.

Stop by this local toy store and see why people say, “it’s the friendliest store in town”!

LastThursday evening was a great night. Yes, the baseball game wins over Owensville were wonderful. Why are we always rivals? The two home runs from Parker Anderson and Charlie Tyree were incredible. There was a big crowd, happy players, coaches, and moms. The best part of a trip to Owensville? The parade of daffodils on the side of the road. Each year I enjoy going down Hwy 19 to see the lovely owers. This year they look a little different. They are giant, the colors are richer, and I swear, they seemed to be calling out to me as I drove by. Yes, I’m probably losing my mind. As I drove it was like they wanted me to stop, maybe lie down next to them so I could enjoy the fragrance as well as their beauty. I shook

Village Dog Park

A group of citizens in Hermann have worked hard over the last few years hoping to start a dog park for citizens and visitors and last year they succeeded! Hermann now has a beautiful dog park on ¾ of an acre next to Village Market on Hwy 100. Money donated over the years provided fencing, tools for assembly, gravel, water and ongoing expenses including lawn maintenance, insurance, water bills and upkeep. Benefits of the park include a fenced-in area where dogs can run and socialize off-leash legally and safely; a separate area for small dogs; benches, waste receptacles, dog litter bags, water stations and more! The park also encourages responsible dog ownership by promoting licensing, vaccination and clean-up. The park was formed and is currently supported solely by volunteers. Items such as insurance, supplies, maintenance and upkeep are only possible through donations. All funds collected go toward expenses to keep the park open, safe and an enjoyable place to visit whether you’ve got 2 legs or 4 legs. Your donation will help keep the park viable for years to come. For information on how to donate, please contact Martha Hermosillo at CFHer-mannArea@CFOzarks.org
