WELCOME to Mineola in East Texas on behalf of the City. Our area is rich in community spirit and has much to offer visitors, residents and businesses. We are glad you are here to experience our town’s local flavor and history. We have a wonderful “Can-Do” attitude, with numerous volunteer opportunities to all who want to be involved in our city.
The City of Mineola is committed to “Building a Better Community” to serve our current and future citizens. This is achieved in keeping with our commitment to the ongoing implementation of best practices in all our City operations. It is our belief that our City’s greatest attribute comes from our diverse residents with different points of view believing in one City. As such, we continue to work to establish collaboration, find consensus and achieve inclusiveness to become the best Mineola possible.
Mineola has so many attributes to offer residents which many times are taken for granted in small towns. Some of these attributes to Mineola are A National Main Street Program since 1989 and our downtown walking district received a designation in 2013 by the U.S. Department of Interior on the National Register of Historic Places from Washington D.C. and a vibrant business environment with FREE WIFI and continuous growth. Other businesses includes a weekly newspaper, a radio station, The Select Theater/Playhouse which is one of the longest continues downtown theater in Texas that shows first run movies, Live Plays, and special performances by Mineola Symphonic Band. Mineola also have a superior school system (MISD), good health care, the Transportation Depot/Museum with Amtrak Texas Eagle passenger train service regularly (from Chicago to Los Angeles and back) from east to west. Other points of interest are the Mineola Historical Museum, Mineola Country Club with 9-hole golf course, access to several area lakes (Lake Holbrook & Lake Fork) and are conveniently within the Mineola/Wood County area. Easy access located approx. 12 miles to I-20 and expediently 20 minutes to Tyler Pounds Regional Airport by accessing Tollway 49 between Mineola & Tyler. We also have an excellent public library, Wood County Airport, local airport-Wisener Field & Museum, first class Civic Center complete with over 200 RV pads, the Mineola League of the Arts, and City owned Iron Horse Square Mini-Train Park (free rides on 2nd and 4th weekends from March to December). The City’s 3,000-acre Nature Preserve is free for all to enjoy open 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. till sunset with numerous bike, equestrian, aquatic, walking & running trails, with numerous fishing ponds, wildscape garden, primitive camping areas and RV hooks-ups with pens & FREE WIFI, archery target practice area, pavilions, amphitheater, playground area, bird watching stations, and the 18 hole disc golf course. The Texas Senate in 2003 proclaimed the Mineola Nature Preserve as the “Birding Capital of East Texas”.

On behalf of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, welcome to Mineola! Whether you are a lifelong resident or just visiting our sweet little town, we are so happy to have you here. While we may be small, big things happen in Mineola. It’s a town where everyone is welcome and we have something for everyone!
Our area offers some of the best recreational and agricultural land in Texas and our historic downtown district puts us on the map as a National Main Street City. We are proud of our continued preservation and revitalization efforts that allow us to be listed on the Texas and National Registry of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior. There is a lot of history packed into our town and in 2023, we are celebrating our sesquicentennial! Mineola began 150 years ago, when the railroad began to make its way through East Texas.
Mineola is proud to be a railroad town! You can visit our restored train depot and hop on the old red caboose for a photo opp. We frequently have trains going through town and Amtrak Eagle makes a stop here too. I hope you get to hear a train whistle as you explore downtown - it will really take you back in time! While you’re here, be sure to visit two other historical places in town, Wisener Field and the Mineola Historical Museum. Wisener Field is the oldest continually operated and family owned airport in Texas.
Whether you are strolling our brick-lined streets or driving our country roads lined with towering trees, I hope you will take a second to stop in at our many independently owned small businesses along the way. Our town is packed with unique eateries, boutiques, and antique shops. Art galleries, murals, live music venues, & the Historic Select Theater highlight the many talented local artists, actors, and musicians of our area.

For nature lovers and outdoorsy folks, the Mineola Nature Preserve is a phenomenal treasure! The nature preserve boasts thousands of acres of protected Texas nature, miles and miles of equestrian, walking, and biking trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course. One of the best parts - it’s FREE to explore! We are truly blessed to have a community asset in the nature preserve. It’s the largest park per capita in the entire country! That’s quite the park!
Lake Fork, a wildly popular bass fishing lake, holds 34 of the top 50 biggest bass ever caught in Texas. Boasting over 27,000 acres, Lake Fork is also great for crappie and catfish fishing. If you want to finally catch The Big One, Lake Fork might just be the place to do it. There are lots of options for lodging, lunch, and family activities surrounding Lake Fork as well.
When you’ve worn yourself out from all the exploring, we also have some really great places to stay. Our lodging in Mineola ranges from independently owned vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts to historic boutique hotels and well-known hotel brands. If you go RVing, a great place to book a spot for your rig is the Mineola Civic Center.
Our Chamber celebrates Mineola’s community and heritage every year with three key events; May Fiesta (May), Iron Horse Heritage Festival (September), and the lighted Mineola Christmas Parade (December). We hope you will make plans to join us for one of these fun and festive events!

Visitors who include hikers, nature lovers, photographers, bird watchers, horsemen and bicyclists can enjoy the pastoral sight of grazing buffalo and longhorn cattle as they enter the park. The further you delve into the trails, the more chance you’ll have of spotting some of the documented 193 species of birds there. The preserve is the “Birding Capital of East Texas.” The wetland habitat also offers numerous species of plants and animals, as well as the tranquility and curiosities of nature.
In recent years a canoe landing has been developed for enthusiasts on which to launch and travel through the preserve along the Sabine River. Also at the preserve, archers can sharpen their skills at the at the park’s archery range. There are stocked fishing ponds (one of which is even ADA accessible), a pavilion with picnic tables and restrooms and a new playground area. The preserve is home to a new disc golf course that is gaining popularity in the
area and hosts tournaments from time to time.
While in town to visit the preserve, the varied businesses and chamber members in Mineola provide fun and intriguing places to shop, and the restaurants can tempt almost any palate from Texas barbecue to fantastic burgers and famous patty melts, juicy steaks, pizza, coffee, cafes, sweets, Mexican cuisine and even gluten-free choices.
Some of the other things that bring folks to town include the Mineola Youth Foundation, Meredith Memorial Football Stadium (home of the Class 3A Div. 1 State Champion football team), as well as the Mineola Civic Center, Mineola Country Club golf course, Select Theater, Lake Holbrook and the other nearby county lakes. Historic Wisener Field Airport, home of the Royal Flying Circus, Wood County Collins Field Airport and Highways 80, 69 and 37 are ways visitors arrive in town, not to mention Amtrak’s Texas Eagle that stops here regularly.
The Mineola Youth Foundation hosts the boys and girls of summer and has for generations. Meredith Memorial Stadium has hosted other towns’ championship games and most

recently, a high school marching band contest that drew droves of musicians and their entourages to Mineola. The country club and its golf course is one of Mineola’s oldest attractions. While it is a country club, you do not have to be a member or be with a member to play. It is considered one of the top 9-hole courses in the state.
Wisener Field Airport recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the moment when a barnstormer touched down in a meadow on the northwest side of Mineola. Wood County Airport, with its modern-day accoutrements, was recently renamed to include the name of the late long-time and former board chairman, Wayne Collins, who has shepherded its development.
At the civic center, visitors will
find a fenced and secure area that incorporates concrete recreational vehicle pads with full hookups. One of Mineola’s newest attraction - a spectacular splash park - offers play areas for toddlers to teens alike. There is also a shaded pavilion with restrooms and a concession stand, as well as room for birthday parties or other events. There are lighted tennis courts, picnic tables and a playground, and sidewalks that stretch for a mile around and through the park. On any given day you will find joggers, tennis players, soccer teams, RV campers and pet owners enjoying the park on the northeast side of town. The center is also the location of Meredith Hall, one of the popular event locations in town.

Historic preservation leads to economic development
Mineola became a Texas Main Street City in 1989 and in 2000 was chosen as a National Main Street city by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Sales tax revenues have been up for the past several months in Mineola and economic development is steadily growing.
The business community has continued to grow with new restaurants and retailers in the past year and more to be opening or coming to town in the near future. This vitality is a result of efforts by many in the development of a strong, focused historic downtown district, with over $11 million of investment of public and private funds made in the central business district.
The Main Street Advisory Board’s mission is to use historic preservation as a method of maintaining a positive image to downtown, while creating economic growth for the community.
Main Street is the heart and soul of a community and with the city, merchants and the community’s strong commitment to revitalizing the historic homes and downtown area, Mineola continues to establish itself as a tourist destination. One of the newest efforts is the creation of the Iron Horse Square Project, a historical railroad park downtown. An old railroad bed has
been uncovered to provide a walking trail.
Plans for the railroad park will pay tribute to the town’s history, with a replica of an interlocking tower in Mineola and a flagman’s hut, but also a track and train on which visitors will be able to ride in the park.
The Main Street Board, under the supervision of the city, continues to make successful strides in historic preservation, economic vitality in downtown, and a concentrated marketing program that will foster economic vitality in our community. The Main Street Program in Mineola is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished when the city, community and numerous volunteers work together to create and carry out a common vision!
Mineola Main Street’s largest fundraiser is the Wine Train which has sold out each year for the overnight visit to Fort Worth.

The Historic Select Theater in Mineola is the longest continuous operating movie theater in Texas.
First opening its doors in 1920, the Select has kept pace with the ever-changing technology of the motion picture industry while maintaining the charm of a single-screen theater in a small town, and that includes prices for tickets and concessions.
Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Hooks opened the theater as a movie house in 1920, and the building retains much of its historical style and ambiance today. In 1978, a group of actors determined to bring live theater to the Lake Country area formed the Lake Country Playhouse. They purchased the select in 1993, ensuring that Mineola would continue to have a movie theater and a venue for live theatrical and musical productions.
The Playhouse produces four live plays each year – one in each season – and shows first-run movies each weekend. Patrons especially love the summer musicals and Christmas shows.
The Select is also home to the Lake Country Symphonic Band, a 65-member community ensemble, which presents four scheduled performances during the year.

Our housing opportunities for seniors in Mineola are above and beyond. The town also offers senior housing within the community, an assisted living center and two nursing homes. The City of Mineola pays a fee to the ambulance service which prevents residents of the city limits who are insured from having to pay for transportation by ambulance when they have to go to the hospital. And those who don’t have insurance are billed substantially less. Meals on Wheels is also a program that is offered in the Mineola area.
