THE HISTORY OF WALLENS TOWING & RECOVERY

Founded in 1933 by Luther Wallen, Wallens Towing and Recovery continued to grow and evolve until son Danny Wallen took over in the 1960’s. Danny’s son, Daniel, took the reins of the business in the mid-1990’s, and the fourth generation, Dylan Wallen, is already taking an active role in the business, hoping to one day lead the towing and recovery service into the future.

LEVI JACKSON WILDERNESS ROAD PARK —

This state park contains the Mountain Life Museum, McHargue’s Mill, camping, swimming, recreation and a memorial to the massacre of the McNitt Party. The park is also at the intersection of the Wilderness Road and Boone’s Trace, blazed by Daniel Boone. It is still open today to hiking and the Wilderness Road has since been partially paved as part of Kentucky Route 229.

DR. THOMAS WALKER STATE HISTORIC SITE —

Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site is named after the first frontiersman in Kentucky. Near the river, which he named the Cumberland, Dr. Walker built the first cabin in Kentucky, a replica of which stands on the site today. The cabin and surrounding grounds can be toured year-round. Known as the “Niagara of the South,” the waterfall forms a 125-foot-wide curtain that plunges seven stories into a boulder-strewn gorge, and is dramatic day or night. The Corbin Arena is a city-owned 100,000 square foot, multi-purpose facility. It hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the course of the year, including concerts, sporting events, expos, graduation ceremonies and more. The Arena has welcomed in legendary musical acts such Styx, Judas Priest, ZZ Top and Snoop Dogg recently. Each March, the facility hosts the 13th Region boys and girls basketball tournaments, and in January of 2024 it will be the host site for the statewide All “A” Classic championship basketball tournaments.

Treetop Adventure is an adventure in the trees of Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park designed to challenge your mind and body. A series of platforms in the trees are connected by cables, wood, rope and zip lines to form bridges that form “aerial trails.” Courses offer differing levels of difficulty.

Turner Outdoor Center
