This area gives new meaning to the phrase hidden gem because of the levels of things to discover around here. First off, you can find actual gems here. Our Arkansas red dirt is full of all kinds of sparkling treasures. That’s just the beginning.
The scenery is hard to beat, especially in autumn. Get up close and personal with our unique flora and fauna by exploring our trails on a bike or on foot. New mountain bike trails and other outdoor fun are just on the horizon for the Ouachita Mountains. Visit menapolkchamber.com and you can stay in touch by joining our newsletter. Mena/Polk County is more than just a pretty face. We have depths that show in our ever-growing art community. You can truly find it all here. Painters, musicians, glass workers, potters, and carpenters to name a few. If you can dream it, someone here can make it, whether it’s large or small. Don’t let the small-town fool you, we have big talent in these mountains.
Take a walk down Mena Street and find the tip of the artistic iceberg in our Downtown Arts District where we showcase local artwork. That's where you will find another jewel in our community crown in the form of our delicious restaurants. Our local eateries will remind you why the south is known for mouthwatering food. Unwind after a long day of play by listening to live music in our Entertainment District. Our community works hard to spotlight our local talent so don’t think that Mena Street is where your tour should stop. Take a drive and you will find an embarrassment of riches in this mountain community. Each small community has something to offer.
Whether you’re visiting or relocating, we look forward to meeting you and showing you a part of the world that you will fall in love with just like we did. Stop by our office located at 524 Sherwood Avenue in the Historic Train Depot and take the first step in your Ouachita Mountain adventure.

TheAnnual Chamber Banquet is a time of celebration, when we toast our members and reflect on our successes. It provides a night of fun with a little bit of glitz and glamour thrown in.
One of the biggest benefits you can get from a chamber of commerce is the opportunity to network and what better way to do so than to enjoy a great meal surrounded by the best and brightest the area has to offer. While we try to focus on our community events, advocacy efforts, and educational opportunities, networking always provides a benefit to our members. Our purpose as an organization is to provide our community with what’s needed.
In 2022, we heard from a great speaker, Eric Jackson, Senior VP of Oaklawn Racing and Chairperson of Arkansas State Parks Recreation & Travel Commission, who talked about the trickling effects tourism dollars have on a community. The Chamber’s Mena/Polk County Enhancement Foundation auction at the banquet was a huge success in 2022. As a result, the Foundation provided scholarships to four local high school seniors to help in their academic endeavors.
We also like to recognize those that go above and beyond in their commitment to, not just their own, but our community’s success. Each year the Chamber presents a series of Community Awards. In 2022, we shook up the categories a bit, mostly to recognize local heroes who rose to the occassion when struck by an unprecedented pandemic.
We appreciate all of our worthy nominees and give a special congratulations to our winners!
Music on Main is a new event launched by the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce, which initially kicked off in Spring 2022. Held in the downtown area of Mena, the musical event is meant to bring together locals and tourists alike for a night of entertainment and comradery.
Each event focuses on providing entertainment that will please folks of all ages and musical tastes, with each date being of a different musical genre. Watch our social media pages, @menapolkcoc, and website, www. menapolkchamber.com, for date and talent announcements.
With two events held in 2022 and three planned for 2023, Music on Main is sure to become a staple in the community.
perform a mixture of country and southern rock at the first Music on Main event in May 2022. Upper right: LA ROXX fires up the crowd with their 80’s rock glam band personas and high intensity performance on a hot July night. Bottom right: Mena’s ‘First Family’ takes part in the 80’s themed dress-up contest.
In 1976, Mark Campbell started a tradition. The Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run (QWRR) was born from a desire to unite hot rod enthusiasts in a place that Campbell loved and called home. His business, Street & Performance, was the perfect platform to launch a car show from and launch it did. In fact, it took off like a rocket, or a drag car if that is your preference.
From its initial conception to current day, the Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run draws car lovers from far and wide. Sadly in 2015, at the age of 70, Mark passed away leaving behind his car show and his legacy. In 2016, the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce got behind the wheel of the Rod Run and has worked hard to continue this unique event that highlights some of the most amazing features of the area.
Heading into its 48th year, QWRR continues to grow and shows no signs of slowing down. It is truly a tradition for locals and visitors alike. Everyone looks forward to every August, when over 200 hot rods, street rods, lowriders, rat rods, and trucks descend on the small, quaint town of Mena.
One of the unique elements of the event is its multiple locations. Friday night’s show-and-shine is a throwback to a simpler time when cars cruised up and down the main drag revving their engines for hours and hours. People fill Mena Street, alongside gleaming fenders, and perfect upholstery, kicking off the two-day event. Put it in high gear and fast forward to Saturday when we pack the top of Rich Mountain at Queen Wilhelmina State Park for a full day of looking at cars, talking about cars, comparing cars and of course, food, fun for the kids, and plenty of opportunities for retail therapy. The chances to take home some hardware are many as we have added classes to the voting ballot. The Mark Campbell Award is not only picked by someone who was close to Campbell himself, but the winner receives the honor of having their prized set of wheels as the inspiration for next year’s t-shirts.
You’ll have plenty of chances to put your hot rod through its paces on the Talimena Scenic Byway. This local treasure is full of twists and turns and is the route to and from Saturday’s event locations. That evening finds us back on Mena Street, down at the south end, listening to live rock & roll and the rumble of motors while the sun sets behind the mountain. Stick around for awards and linger a little while longer with friends over a plate of BBQ prepared by some of Mena’s finest.
Unbeknownst to some, Mena is a hidden pocket of hot rod culture. Although Street and Performance is no longer in existence, people in the know still bring their cars to Mena for specialty treatment. The Rod Run is the perfect
place to connect with the locals, especially the ones with gasoline running through their veins. And you won’t get far before finding someone who brings up Mark Campbell’s name. Take notes for your next visit to the Queen Wilhelmena Rod Run, but you’ll probably be back before then. The love of fast, shiny, and loud cars is strong in these hills, and many find it hard to stay away.
The 48th Annual Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run will be held on August 25-26, 2023. Visit www.menapolkchamber. com for more information.

Home of two incredible Arkansas State Parks: Queen Wilhelmina State Park and Cossatot River State Park.
Location of the Ouachita National Forest, one of the nation’s oldest forests, and the Ouachita Mountainsthe only range in the U.S. that runs east to west.
An abundance of natural forest, creeks, lakes and rivers, hiking/biking trails, arts district, parks, museums, and a wonderful history of being a welcoming, friendly place.
Polk County has a rich history, a unique geography, a handful of famous folks, and is home to a plethora of flora and flauna only found within the forests of the Ouachitas. The earliest settlers were awed by the beauty of the area and homesteads were first recorded around 1830. On November 30, 1844, Polk County, named after then President James K. Polk, was formally established. The original county seat was Dallas, named after Polk’s Vice President, George Dallas.
When Arthur Stillwell, owner of the Kansas City, Pittsburg, and Gulf Railway, rolled into the area in 1896, he founded a new town, Mena, just three miles west of Dallas. Mena was named after Folmina Margaretha Janssen deGeoijen, the wife of Dutch financier Jan de Goeigen, who had invested in Stillwell’s company. The town was incorporated in 1896. Less than two years later, the county seat was moved to Mena, where it remains to this day. Many towns in the area were named after friends, business partners, and employees of Arthur Stillwell. Just follow the railway through the southern part of the county and you’ll find the town of Hatfield, named after a construction worker that perished in an explosion while working on the railroad. The origins of how Cove was named remain unclear and although it was not originally on the railroad route, it was later relocated to be closer to the railway system. Further south is Vandervoort, named after Jan de Goeigen’s mother. Wickes was named after a friend of Stillwell. The most southern town in Polk County is Grannis, named after a railroad official.
Although settlers were here long before the railroad, the transportation method became the boom that each community needed to bring commerce and prosperity that has continued to sustain businesses and families in the
area for more than 175 years.
Agriculture has long been a source of prosperity for Polk County. The earliest settlers to the county raised crops such as cotton and fruit. Today, crop farming and animal production continue to play large roles in the agricultural economy of Polk County, with poultry production reigning supreme. The timber industry prospered in the early days, as well, and still supports a large slice of the overall prosperity of the county.
Although mining was prominent in the earliest of days with minerals such as manganese being extracted from area mines, the industry eventually died out and the mines were closed in the early 1900’s. Manufacturing has developed over the years and has also produced an economic boom with machinery, plastics, cylinder heads, and much more being shipped to places around the world.
Each town in Polk County has a story to tell. Each is filled with historical homes, stories of legends, and is surrounded by the most beautiful landscape in the United States. Keep reading to begin your journey through Polk County, its beautiful history, and even brighter future.

The
City-Southern
Center &
is
Arkansas. It is a long, single-story structure built out of brick, with a tile roof and Mediterranean styling. It was built in 1920 by Kansas City Southern Railway to designs by the company architect, T. C. Horstmann, and is one of the most elaborate surviving early-20th century railroad stations in the state. It is now owned by the City of Mena and houses a local history museum, the Mena Advertising & Promotion office, and the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce.
The restored Kansas City Southern railroad station includes a museum full of historical displays, railroad memorabilia, and art exhibits, including a room dedicated to Arkansas natives Lum n’ Abner and a restored 1939 Dodge police car. A full-service visitor’s center operates out of the depot offering rest and respite to travelers just as it did in its heyday. Information on local lodging, dining, and recreation is available. The Depot Center is a focal point for community activity and a gateway to the Talimena Scenic Byway.
Mena’s first depot was built in the summer of 1896, when Mena emerged as a railroad boomtown. The town of Mena marked the halfway point on the Kansas City-Port Arthur route, and was therefore set up as the central division point. As such, it was necessary to have adequate buildings. A depot, machine shops, and a roundhouse were all constructed, as well as stock yards and pens.
The Depot was the focal point of Mena and served as a social and economic center as well. As the years passed and Mena moved away from the roughness of the boom-town era, criticisms began to arise over conditions in the Depot. Complaints against the “inadequate accommodations” and “unsatisfactory conditions” led to the construction of the current depot which was dedicated November 8, 1920.
The relationship between Mena’s city fathers and the Kansas City Southern Railroad began to sour over the early continued on page 26

years of the 1900’s until the railroad’s central division was moved to Heavener, Oklahoma in 1910.
In 1985, a group of Mena organizations began trying to save the building that was so significant to the history of the city. The deed to the depot was officially transferred to the city on February 6, 1986. Dozens of volunteers donated more than 7,500 hours of labor to the renovation of the building. Still others donated cash and materials to restore the dilapidated old depot into a modern facility that is a credit to the city. The building is now valued at $250,000 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since the building reopened to the public on July 12, 1987, visitors representing most states and many foreign countries have registered.

Polk County is a place filled with amazing historical landmarks. From the KCS Depot and historic Downtown to the Bard Springs and Shady Lake areas, all of Polk County’s landmarks show just how rich the area’s historical background is.
Polk County, named for President James K. Polk, is located on the western edge of Arkansas. The first settlement began about 1830. At that time the region was part of Sevier County. Polk County was separated from Sevier County by the legislature on November 30, 1844. It is one of the western tiers of counties; bounded on the north by Scott county; on the east by Montgomery; on the south by Howard and Sevier, and on the west by the State of Oklahoma. It has an area of 846 square miles and an average elevation of 1,300 feet, drained by the Cossatot and Ouachita rivers, both of which rise in the county.
The act creating the county fixed the temporary county seat at the house of John Pirtle, where there was a post office called Panther. The permanent county seat was located near the southwest corner of Township 2 south, Range 30 west, and was named Dallas, for the Vice President of the United States. Subsequently, it was removed to a site a short distance north and the name was changed to Mena.
Polk is divided into seventeen townships, viz: Big Fork, Center, Cedar, Cove, Eagle, Eagle Gap, Faulkner, Freedom, Fulton, Gap Springs, Mill Creek, Mountain, Ouachita, Ozark, Potter, Rich Mountain and White. A large part of the county is in the Arkansas National Forest. Hunting and timber attracted many of the early settlers, who came principally from Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served in the district. We know our coffee, and curbing your caffeine craving will never be a problem with one of our three specialty coffee houses.
You’ll find retail shops and boutique stores offering everything from clothing, flowers, and jewelry all the way to cosmetics, furniture, and home goods. If something unique is what you are searching for, stop by one of the numerous antique stores and get lost for hours browsing the treasures of the past.

Let’s create an adventure where the winding roads leave us with anticipation of what’s around the corner. A place where the breathtaking, panoramic views seem to go on forever and cotton candy sunsets sweeten the skies. You have an audience with the majestic Queen atop her beautiful, mountaintop setting at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. So, put the convertible top down or the kickstand up and let the adventure begin.
Queen Wilhelmina State Park is located on the Talimena Scenic Drive, northwest of Mena, Arkansas, on Rich Mountain. Rich Mountain is the second highest peak in Arkansas, at 2,681 feet. The jewel in the crown, of the park, is the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. The only open lodge on the 235 mile Ouachita Trail, the original “Castle in the Sky” was built in 1898 and has graced this same location since. The original lodge was built by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad to house its passengers. As many of the railroad’s investors were Dutch, the lodge was named to honor Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who was to be crowned in September 1898.
The grand opening of the Wilhelmina Inn occurred on June 22, 1898. The
KCPG railroad, facing financial difficulties, sold the lodge to what later became the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The original inn fell into disrepair, and permanently closed in 1910.
The State Act 76 of 1957 created Queen Wilhelmina State Park and it was dedicated at the Louise Durham School in Mena with Governor Orval Faubus and Winthrop Rockefeller as the key-note speakers. A new lodge was built and opened June 22, 1963 using some of the original rock work and was in operation for 10 years. On November 10, 1973, a kitchen fire spread, destroying the lodge. A new lodge was then re-opened, in 1975 and is the third to have reigned over this location. The refurbished Queen Wilhelmina State Park Lodge reopened to the public in 2015, after a $9.6 million renovation and expansion.
The lodge was expanded from 25,881 square feet to 37,029 square feet to include the addition of a new hearth room with fireplace. This room boasts an incredible wall of windows which frames the wide open views of the Ouachita Mountains. Today’s Queen Wilhelmina Lodge offers 40 guest rooms, including Queen, King, King with spa tub and gas fireplace, and King Suite choices. Two guest rooms on each floor, at the west end, include gas fireplaces and spa tubs. If it is business accommodations you are looking for, there is an upstairs meeting facility that includes a balcony overlooking the south view from the mountain.
When it’s time for a quick break, a wrap-around porch, on the building’s south side, provides guests and visitors with a comfortable outdoor space. Be sure to get fueled up before heading out on your adventure. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be enjoyed in the Queen’s Restaurant. Enjoy fine Southern fare with world class views. Before you leave, stop by the treasure-filled gift shop. There are many beautiful and unique items to choose from.
In addition to the lodge, Queen Wilhelmina State Park encompasses 460 acres, featuring a campground with 41 campsites and a bathhouse. Park campsites, hiking trails and overlooks are just a short walk from the lodge. There are picnic areas, trails, and a seasonal miniature train and mini-golf course. Take advantage of the daily, weekly, and monthly activities to participate in including park interpretive programs that highlight Rich Mountain’s unique fauna and flora. The park is located on Ark. 88 (Talimena National Scenic Byway) 13 miles west of Mena. To plan your adventure, visit the Queen Wilhelmina State Park website at www. arkansasstateparks.com/parks/queen-wilhelmina-statepark or call (877) 879-2741 or (479) 394-2863.

The Cossatot River flows through the Ouachita National Forest offering a beautiful, yet challenging course for kayakers and canoeists. Cossatot is roughly translated from an Indian word meaning “skull crusher” and the river has been called “the most challenging section of whitewater between the Smokies and the Rockies.” The Cossatot is 89 miles long, begins southeast of Mena, and is listed as a National Wild and Scenic River and an Arkansas Natural and Scenic River. When local rainfall increases the watershed, the river forms Cossatot Falls, a rocky canyon with a series of back-to-back class III-IV+ rapids that drop around 40 feet in 1/8 of a mile. With names such as Washing Machine, Whiplash, and Devil’s Hollow Falls, adventure and adrenaline are likely flow as fast as the river. Arkansas summers are hot, and the best way to cool off is a trip to the nearest body of water. Locals know the best places, and are usually agreeable to share the location of their favorite spot or at the very least, their second favorite spot.
Located next to a small scenic stream in a remote mountain setting, the Bard Springs Recreation Area offers five adirondake-type shelters for picnicking. A very small dam on the stream creates a pool of water that is popular with swimmers in the summertime. Once a small campground in the past, this area is now open for day-use only. No electricity or water is available at the site, but a vault toilet is provided. Nearby Shady Lake offers camping opportunities. Call the Mena-Oden Ranger District at 479-394-2382 for more information.

The rest of the year, the river meanders lazily and is a welcome respite from the Arkansas heat. Camping sites are located near the Cossatot Falls area, and at the nearby Brushy Creek Recreation area with four scenic trails, spanning nearly 20 miles, for hikers to enjoy.
