Marion County Country Ham Days Festival

T

he Marion County Country Ham Days Festival, which takes place the last full weekend of September, began in 1969 with a mere six hams and a small number of volunteers. Some of the first documented stories and photos show a one-day festival that included carnival rides, pie eating contests, a flea market and square dancing. The first crowds were estimated at approximately 2,500. The famous country ham breakfast did not begin until the 1970s. In the beginning, the eggs were cracked by hand and the ham and biscuits were counted by the dozens not thousands. The peak of breakfast sales was in the 1980s and 1990s when lines for the breakfast stretched around the block. Approximately 8,000 breakfasts were sold in 1997. The breakfast now serves around 3,500 people, which includes 4,000 pounds of country ham. The country ham breakfast is served both Saturday and Sunday. In addition to delicious Kentucky country ham, it also features scrambled eggs, biscuits, fried apples and “red-eye” gravy served under a huge hospitality tent. The festival has continued to evolve over the years and focus on more than just the breakfast. The Pokey Pig 5K race, children’s activities, car show, Pigasus parade, arts and crafts, and hot air balloons are just a few of the events that have been added over the years. The da Vinci surgical system helps enable your surgeon to perform minimally invasive surgery with an advanced set of instruments and a 3D high-definition view of the surgical area. Minimally invasive surgery with the da Vinci is widely used in general surgery, urology and gynecology procedures.

Your surgeon in control

The da Vinci surgical system gives your surgeon an advanced set of instruments to use in performing roboticassisted minimally invasive surgery. The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console. The da Vinci system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion. The da Vinci vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area. The instrument size makes it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions. to Logan Inman the winner of the TRH “Name the Robot” contest! Birth of the “Clothesline of Quilts” Trail A tri-state effort among Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee is seeking to draw tourists off the interstates and into rural areas to experience the regions’s unique culture. Called “Clothesline of Quilts,” the project involves painting quilt squares and murals of rural life on barns and other structures along roadways throughout rural states. The project began in Ohio when Ohio Arts Council member Donna Sue Groves painted a quilt square on a barn in honor of her mother, a lifelong quilter. She raised funds to paint 20 squares in Monroe County, Ohio. Kentucky and Tennessee joined the project in hopes of creating a “Clothesline of Quilts” driving trail.

Marion County Quilt Trail Guidelines

• Each patch must be 8’ x 8’. • Must be a pieced or appliqué pattern. • Patches must be painted on approved signboard or other similar material. • Quilt patches must be placed on a committee- approved barn, building or other location. • The quilt patch must be approved by the local committee in order to maintain continuity, refrain from excess duplication and insure quality of the project. • The local committee schedules the hanging of the patch.
