Welcome to Cameron
would like to welcome you to “our town.” Many of us who live here in Cameron have been here for most of our lives. A recent survey showed that Milam County has more native-born citizens than any other county in the area. Some of us left, worked in other places, and came home. We Cameronites take pride in our town, in our past, in our heritage, and in our future. We’re on the El Camino Real, which was the main road through colonial Texas, and now we’re at the crossroads of Highway 36/190 and Highway 77 in the middle of all the major metropolitan areas of modern-day Texas. We have great schools, a beautiful courthouse and downtown mall, a top-notch performing arts center, a great park and pool, and a business park ready to accommodate your company or business, so come on to Cameron and become a part of us. If you’re just passing through, take time out to visit our museum and become acquainted with our rich history, read a letter written by Sam Houston or several others penned by confederate soldiers. Take time to stroll down our walking trail and read about the history of farming and view old farm implements. Tour the restored county courthouse and sit in the historic courtroom where district court is still held to this very day. Whatever your pleasure, you are always welcome in our town. Connie Anderle Mayor of Cameron

Welcome to Cameron
he Cameron Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Cameron located in Milam County, Texas. There’s a special feeling you get when you return to the place where you grew up. The food tastes better, the air smells sweeter, a friendly familiar face greets you at every turn, and although you might miss some of the conveniences of the big city, your troubles stay behind! Cameron is located in the “Texas Golden Triangle,” that is Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, and about an hour’s drive from Bryan-College Station, Austin, and Waco. The city is known as “Hometown, Texas” and exemplifies those simple delights and that laid-back feel. Cameron, your home away from home! Like many quaint and small rural Texas towns, Cameron - named for Texas Revolutionary figure Capt. Ewen Cameron - was settled by a diverse group of pioneers and had its future secured by the arrival of the railroad. The impact of Cameron’s earliest settlers can still be seen all over town. The rich history of Cameron and Milam County has deep roots in agriculture. Take a Historical Walking Tour of Downtown Cameron with its numerous historic sites and buildings, such as the Milam County Courthouse, Milam County Museum, and the Old Milam County Jail built in1895. The Old Town Cameron and Railroad Museum houses a miniature Cameron in the 1940s in extraordinary detail, drawing tour groups from all over the state. There are also three historically designated churches, and several homes in the city. View the architectural designs of City Hall and Ideal Poultry who occupy historic buildings with storefront sdesigned by Metzer in the 1800s. Take your picture in front of the murals painted on several downtown buildings telling the story of Cameron’s 19th-century roots. Milam County’s natural beauty hasn’t changed much, and some of Cameron’s loveliest vistas and best activities are found inside one of 11 city parks. Enjoy a picnic and bird watching on the 25 acres of Wilson Ledbetter Park! Cameron is also one of the gateways to the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, a famous 17th Century Spanish route now designated as a National Historic Trail! Take a riding tour of Milam County’s historical bridges along with viewing over 250 other historical markers throughout the county. On Friday’s during football season, some of the most fun you can have here is under the open sky at Yoe Field, as you cheer your heart out for the Yoemen football team! Or, visit the newly-built baseball complex, The Yards of Cameron, home of the Yoemen baseball team. Though our town is small, our roots run deep. We also thrive as headquarters for two of the largest and most recognized-by-name businesses in Texas and the USA. One reaches into the rich agricultural aspect of Cameron as the headquarters of 44 Farms, an industry leader in producing high-quality Angus cattle and beef since 1909. You have probably seen this name on menus featured in restaurants worldwide! EBCO General Contractors, who established themselves in Cameron in 1984, is one of the top contracting firms in Texas and has projects throughout the United States. If you time your trip right, you can enjoy one of several events hosted by the Cameron Chamber throughout the year with October’s annual Steak, Stein and Wine Festival featuring 44 Farms Steaks and Steak Flight Tastings; the annual Christmas Parade, rated as the “Best Christmas Parade in Central Texas” with over 70 beautifully decorated entries; or join us for some exciting basketball during our 23rd annual Chamber Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament in December. This year featuring two teams from Australia. Whether you pack up and move here or just stop in for the day, Cameron wants to be your hometown. Visit today and see for yourself that there’s no place like home!

Old Town Cameron brings history to life
A
re you ready to take a step back in time? You can do exactly that at the Old Town Cameron exhibit at the Milam County Train Museum in Cameron. Cameron native John Johnson has spent the better part of 40 years perfecting the Old Town Cameron replica of 1940s Cameron. Johnson grew up in Cameron where the downtown was a place of bustling activity. As a young boy he visited the downtown area and on many occasions sat and watched the trains on the side of the road with his father. When you visit the replica you see the work of 83-year-old Johnson who donated his work to the museum. For Johnson this is more than a hobby. Each hand-painted figure, delicately-crafted building and train car is a piece of the love story between him and his wife Frances. He will tell you she played a big part in it. She was my right-hand man. This has been a life’s work full of passion, history, memories and lovely expression of the big heart for Cameron and its people. Johnson grew up in Cameron, but spent most of his adult life in Austin. He couldn’t remember a time when he didn’t love trains. Johnson has been interviewed by several different television stations and by Shane McAuliffe of The Texas Bucket List. He said he built the first depot and then figured he would have to have some place for everyone to go when they got off the train, so for some reason he started building Cameron. Jamie Larson with the Milam County Train Museum said that Johnson was gifted with being able to remember what Cameron used to look like. Over 3,000 people have visited the replica each of the last two years and over 200 have visited since January of 2020. Johnson was honored by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce in February 2020 with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on Old Town Cameron. “We salute you Mr. Johnson,” Chamber Director Melanie Reed said in honoring him. “And are proud of what you have given back to us. You are our hometown hero and we are glad you said yes and returned to Cameron with your spirit and your love.” “It’s a love that never died in my heart,” Johnson said. “I lived here during the sad time when World War II was going on. I walked down the streets of Cameron and knew almost every person in town. God’s been good to me and I want to thank you all tonight.”

Quality Reliability Service Setting a pace of water infrastructure replacement that is manageable, affordable and effective.
The City of Cameron produces quality water and waste water services at an affordable price. We have managed an aging infrastructure while conservatively replacing much needed water and waste water lines along with water and sewer plant infrastructure. We continue to work to replace streets as we ďŹ nish projects. The measure is set at a pace that is manageable and affordable. 100 S Houston Avenue, Cameron, TX 76520 - 254.697.3040 - camerontexas.net

Historic house breathes new life
N
ew life has been breathed back into a Cameron treasure thanks to hard work and love. The newly-opened Central Avenue Bistro and Marketplace has a history all its own and owner Marilyn Willie has been pleasantly surprised by what it has meant to the community for it to be restored. Willie and her daughter Spring restored the historic Lawrence-Hubert House, built in the late 1800s, not really knowing what to do with it. “I have always loved restoring things,” Willie said. “I finished my house up and needed something to do. It hurt me to see this house go downhill.” Willie said her daughter suggested that they buy the house and work on it since she would be retiring soon and would probably be bored. She said they put an offer in on it and it was accepted. “We were thinking what do we do now,” she said. “It really is a treasure for Cameron. We thought about what we could do with it and we both really love all the restaurants we see with a history, so we decided to see if we could open something up here.” The Bistro serves salads and sandwiches and stuff that Willie said they “knew how to do.” The building had sat vacant for 10 years, so it was a mess when they first got it, but with the help of friends and lots of love it slowly came back to life. “We did a lot of research on restoring it and things just seemed to fall into place,” Willie said. She said the first step was to restore the roof to its original look and to replace the rotted wood on the columns outside. She said through little miracles lots of things fell into place.

ameron has a unique complex of museums offering a glimpse of the past in the downtown business/government office district.
Jail Museum
The Milam County Jail Museum, located at East Main Street and South Fannin Avenue and now known as the Milam County Museum, was designed in the Romanesque Revival style of architecture and was built in 1895 by the Pauly Jail Building and Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri, which brought most building supplies from St. Louis. The threestory red brick building has many distinctive mini-turrets. It is topped by a hanging tower, which was never used. The first floor was used for storage and a residence for the sheriff and his family, while the second and third floors housed prisoners. It was replaced in 1975 for a more modern jail and then became the local historical museum. The residence areas of the jail are furnished in antique furniture and household items, much like what would have been used there by the Sheriff’s family. The last family to live there was the family of Sheriff Carl Black. The son of Carl Black, Judge William Black, presented a program, “The Life and Times of Sheriff Carl Black,” at the Milam County Historical Museum, discussing his memories of his father and of living in the jail. The museum has DVD recordings of that presentation available for purchase at the museum. On the grounds of the jail museum is the historic Sneed Log Cabin, converted to a visitor’s center on the El Camino Real de los Tejas historic trail. The cabin was built around 1849 by Joseph P. Sneed, a circuit riding preacher. Today, it serves as a showcase of frontier life in Central Texas with displays of artifacts and antiques. The jail museum and Sneed cabin are open for tours by appointment. Call (254) 6978963 to arrange a time.

The museum is also a repository for historical papers, documents and research. The large display area includes seating for researchers, a play area for children and a unique museum gift shop featuring local history books, handmade items by local artisans and other gifts. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., (254) 6978963.
Old Town Cameron
Old Town Cameron, a model of Cameron as it looked in the 1940s complete with a model train, is a historical artifact that pays homage to the area’s railroad history. For some 20 years it was on display in the county clerk’s office. Creator John Johnson “deeded” the town and train to Milam County several years ago when the clerk’s office was remodeled. The model has been moved to the JC Penney Building located on the west side of downtown Cameron. It is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second floor area serves as a meeting space. The Milam County Railroad Club has its home at the JC Penney Building and they serve as docents for the Old Town Cameron. For information contact Jamie Larson at (512) 455-9591. Old Town Cameron is located at 101 West Main Street in Cameron. You can find out more by visiting mcmr-otc.org.

Milam County Museums Milam County Courthouse
Created in 1835, Milam County’s original boundaries extended north and west to include parts of 34 current Texas counties. Government offices were at Nashville-on-the-Brazos and Caldwell before Cameron became county seat in 1846. Two frame buildings and a two-story brick structure served as courthouses in Cameron before the present building was completed. Austin architects Jacob Larmour and Arthur O. Watson designed the Renaissance Revival style courthouse, with the cornerstone laid by the local Masonic lodge on July 4, 1891. The first floor included the county courtroom and offices for county officials, while a district courtroom occupied the second and third stories. Identical north and south facades are five-part compositions, while the east and west are three-bay designs. Each of the four fronts has a projecting center pavilion enhanced by a portico and triangular pediment. A mansard roof and central clock tower top an exterior of arched windows, cut stone pilasters and quarry-faced ashlar limestone with fine detailing. In the late 1930s, a federal renovation project by the Works Progress Administration removed the original roof, cupola, clock and statue, and made interior changes. The State of Texas also dedicated a statue on the grounds to commemorate the Centennial of Texas Independence and county namesake Ben Milam. Restoration completed in 2002 reopened the full height of the district courtroom and replaced features that had been removed, including a stairway in the center hall and the clock tower and Goddess of Justice statue. Today, the restored 1890 courthouse remains the focal point of the downtown area. A grassy mall with gazebo and fountain constructed by the city in the early 1970s leads up to the historic building.

BISTRO “The descendents of the Lawrences found us and they had photos of what the inside of the house looked like,” she said. “I was so excited to see that the pendant lights that I had picked were similar to what was in the original.” Local cabinet-maker Charles McAtee helped to restore the cabinets in the kitchen, saying he wanted to help out because he had gone to Kindergarten in the building when it was Mrs. Hubert’s Kindergarten. “There are so many people that are so grateful that we redid the house,” Willie said. “It has been very rewarding, everyone loves it. It was meant to be.” She said that without everyone’s help and “God wings” the restoration wouldn’t have been possible. She is working on getting a Historical Marker for the property. The Central Avenue Bistro and Marketplace is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Thursday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They have Happy Hour Thursday through Saturday from 6-9 p.m. They are located at 312 N.
