Beaumont Animal Care Mascots We May Have Spoiled Them Rotten! by Biviana Lopez

Astro and Toro are our beloved Beaumont Animal Care mascots who had a very rough start in life. Toro is a 6 month old German shepherd mix who was born at the shelter after his mom was brought in as part of a cruelty case. After countless nights of bottle feeding, breathing treatments, and so much more, Toro was the only survivor out of 12 puppies. Our Vet Tech, who was his foster mom, couldn’t give him up after fighting to keep him alive. Astro, our 7 month old rascal, first came into the shelter as a feral kitten. For months, he stayed in the back of his kennel hissing and swatting at anyone who attempted to touch him. After some much needed TLC and a determined employee, Astro started to warm up. He quickly learned the ropes of being a shelter cat and has enjoyed every day as a spoiled cat since! Being only a month apart, Astro and Toro quickly became best friends. They spend their time running around the office causing as much trouble as possible! Follow Beaumont Animal Care on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with Astro and Toro’s crazy antics!

March Flash Mob Clean Up

Volunteers and park staff will gather on Saturday, March 21st, 2020 for the monthly Flash Mob Clean Up. This month’s cleanup will take place at the Highway 96-day use area between Lumberton and Silsbee, near the Village Creek boat launch. The clean-up will start at 10 am with a short safety briefing and will end at noon. Volunteers are required to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and long-sleeved shirts. Other equipment and safety tools will be provided by park staff. The term “flash-mob” describes a large gathering where people perform an unusual or seemingly random act and then disperse. The preserve’s monthly Flash-Mob clean-up is a short volunteer event for

the public to participate in and help the preserve address ongoing litter clean up and maintenance needs. If you would like to learn more about the event or about volunteering in general, please call Megan Urban, Volunteer Program Manager at 409-951-6725. GOD

Created the Dog

On the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.” The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?” So God agreed with the dog. On the second day, God created the monkey and said: “Entertain people, Do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.” The monkey said: “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?” And God agreed with the monkey. On the third day, God created the cow and said: “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves, and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.” The cow said: “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?” And God agreed again. On the fourth day, God created man and said: “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.” But man said: “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

6

PET GAZETTE • Spring 2020

“Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.” So that is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. And that’s how life is explained through God’s creation.

I FOUND A BABY ANIMAL,

Now What? by Matthew Fortenberry

Spring is here, and with it comes baby wildlife season. As the warm season progresses, the chance of encountering young animals from baby birds to baby squirrels and even lone deer fawns increases. The number one piece of advice that we can give is to leave them alone. Many times baby animals are not abandoned and just appear to be alone. Before intervening, make sure that it actually in need of rescue or if it is just waiting on its momma to return to its nest.

it is called a nestling and should be returned to its nest if possible. Listen and look for its parents. This can give you a good indication as to where the nest is located. If the baby bird is fully feathered, it’s called a fledgling has probably jumped from its nest and is perfectly normal. Fledglings spend several days on the ground hiding before learning to fly, this is normal. The bird’s parents will even fly to the ground to give it food. For more information, feel free to contact the staff at Beaumont Animal Care.

The exception is if an animal is injured as a direct result of human activity, such as getting hit by a car or attacked by a domestic pet such as a cat or dog, in which case you will want to contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or your local animal control agency to assist. If you do have to pick up orphaned or injured mammals, be sure to keep them warm and in a quit, dark container, such as a shoe box. You may offer the animal water, but unless you are experienced with wildlife and their dietary needs it is best to leave the feeding to the rehabber. Baby birds are commonly encountered on the ground in the spring. If the baby bird is featherless or covered in fluffy down,

for the position as a handler in the Beaumont K-9 Unit. Before being accepted he had to exhibit specific physical skills and pass an ability test. He says having a K-9 for a partner adds a different aspect to the job and his dog, Joris, is another important tool to help him perform his job to the best of his ability. He loves it!

In 1942, shortly after the U.S. entered World War II, the military was asking people to donate their dogs to be trained for guard and patrol duty. More than 11,000 dogs ended up serving with the Army and Marine Corps. A German shepherd-collie-husky mix named Chips was one of them. His family described him as a rascal at home but he was also strong and smart, and they knew he’d be good at Army duty. On July 10, 1943 Chips began his military career. An Italian machine-gun crew had U.S. forces pinned down on a beach in Sicily. Chips broke from his handler and charged the enemy’s hut. A shot rang out. Moments later, a soldier appeared, with Chips at his throat. Three more soldiers followed, hands in the air. Chips was wounded but that didn’t stop him. Later that same day his keen sense of smell detected 10 enemy soldiers, who also were captured. Chips’s platoon leader cited him “for extra heroism in action.” in 1943 Chips became the only animal ever awarded the Silver Star, the U.S. military’s third-highest medal for bravery in combat. He was also nominated for the Distinguished Service Cross (the second-highest award) and a Purple Heart for wounds he received while in Italy. Chips returned home a hero in 1945.

It’s Wednesday, training day out in the field! Officer Little talks about how he and all the handlers enjoy this day, but make no mistake, it’s a lot of hard work. All five of us and our dogs get together, work on any issues that may have come up during the week and create possible situations they may encounter in the line of duty (before they see it in the real world). According to Little, the dog’s main purpose is to protect the officer - and they do it well. Dogs have proven to be a HUGE deterrent for most crimes. When a dog is present, better decisions are generally made. A potential suspect decides not to flee, because they know they can’t out run a dog and they decide not to fight, because they don’t want to get bit. SMART!

enforcing the law

by Kathy Odom

This is one story. There are thousands of heroic dog stories out there and thousands to come. Over the years there has been a growing awareness of the skills a good canine can bring to the military and to the police force. One of the earliest and most famous stories was in 1888 when Burgho and Barnaby, specially trained bloodhounds, were used by the London police to track Jack The Ripper. Although the dogs were unable to find him before being relocated, Jack The Ripper’s killing spree stopped during the time the dogs were present but unfortunately resumed after the dogs left. Jack The Ripper was never found. The Beaumont Police Department recognized the benefits of employing dogs and began their own K-9 Unit in 1992. There are currently five brave and loyal dogs and their handlers in their department. These special dogs have all passed the required extensive testing and qualified to be trained as a K-9 officer. All five of these dogs are dual-purpose, meaning they are trained for drug and patrol and all live with their handlers. There is a K-9 on duty 24/7 at the Beaumont PD. Officer Adam Little was a police officer for four years before applying

“One of the biggest assets of our K-9 program is they are the one tool that can reach everyone in the community - good or bad. Interacting with the public by visiting churches, schools and other facilities and teaching them how the K-9 Officer serves them is a vital part of our relationship with the community,” says Little. He knows that everybody loves a dog, but more important, everyone realizes their “no-nonsense” approach to doing their job. Officer Little says “We all have our family pets, but the bond with our K-9 partner is a unique and strong one. I am the first to admit a police officer’s job can be intense, but at the end of the day leaving the job completely behind is not an option for us. We never get completely off. We still need to care for and supervise our K-9 partner, making sure they are secure and their environment stays in keeping with their training. We are with them more than we are with our own families. It’s a big responsibility, but you can ask any one of us and our answer would be the same - we wouldn’t trade it for the world.” The love and pride in Officer Little’s voice was apparent as he said, “At the end of the day they are a dog. They do dumb dog stuff, they like their bellies rubbed and their ears scratched and they love their favorite toys.” Whether enlisted in the military, serving as a police officer, or just a family pet, we can not deny that dogs have earned the title of “man’s best friend”.

Who Will Be My Friend? One day an elephant went walking into a forest in search of friends. He saw a monkey on a tree. “Will you be my friend?” asked the elephant. Replied the monkey, “You are too big. You can not swing from trees like me.” Next, the elephant met a rabbit. He asked him to be his friend. But the rabbit said, “You are too big to play in my burrow!” Then the elephant met a frog. “Will you be my friend? He asked. “How can I?” asked the frog. “You are too big to leap about like me.” The elephant was so sad. As he was walking he met a fox next. “Will you be my friend?” he asked the fox. The fox said, “Sorry, sir, you are too big.” The next day, the elephant saw all the animals in the forest running for their lives. The elephant asked them what the matter was. The bear replied, “There is a tiger in the forest. He’s trying to gobble us all up!” The animals all ran away to hide. The elephant

wondered what he could do to save everyone in the forest. Meanwhile, the tiger kept eating up whoever he could find. The elephant walked up to the tiger and said, “Please, Mr. Tiger, do not eat up these poor animals.” “Mind your own business!” growled the tiger. The elephant has a no choice but to give the tiger a big kick. The frightened tiger ran for his life. The elephant walked back into the forest to announce the good news to everyone. All the animals thanked the elephant. They said, “You are just the right size to be our friend.”

The Cat’s Diary Day 983 of My Captivity My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Can you believe it! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event.

However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

WILD WISHES PROGRAM seeks Higher Calling Wild Wishes® grants wildlife encounters to children and teens with a critical illness or loss of a parent or sibling. As part of the outreach of Chester and Lisa Moore’s nonprofit Kingdom Zoo Wildlife Center®, more than 100 children have received life-changing wildlife encounters since the program began. Higher Calling, Wild Wishes Expeditions, goes to a new level by taking teens from the program on expeditions to teach wildlife conservation through mentorship in wildlife photography, social media awareness-raising, and fundraising skills. “We noticed that many of the young people we work with who face these great challenges are looking for a way to help and give back. We are creating these opportunities to give young people an avenue not only to understand conservation but a way to get involved,” said Chester Moore. Two pilot projects initiated the program in 2019. Wild Wishes girl Reannah changed her degree and school (now a Texas Tech student) to work with conservation after her wish encounter as a high school senior in 2018. In December 2019, she got to participate in a desert bighorn sheep capture and translocation at Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area courtesy of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD). “It was an incredible experience!” Reannah said. “It gives me even more inspiration to pursue a career in working in wildlife conservation.” Wild Wishes boys Amos and Jaxon got to take part in a special catch-and-release conservation mission for Guadalupe bass in west-central Texas. Texas Fish & Game magazine featured the trip, and the boys learned how using the photos they took on the trip could raise awareness of problems facing stream fisheries. In Jan. 2020, teens Emily Odom and Dustin Wolfe represented the Wild Wishes program on an eastern wild turkey release in Titus County, TX, orchestrated by TPWD and National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF)-Texas. The two got to release some of the 24 eastern wild turkeys brought to this property in Titus County near Mount Pleasant from North Carolina to accomplish what TPWD calls a “super stocking.” A “super stocking” involves releasing a minimum of 80 turkeys at each site over time with the ideal ratio of three hens for each gobbler. Releases in December 2019 put around the same amount of birds on the property. In the past, TPWD released smaller numbers onto available habitat, but over the last decade went to more significant stockings and are seeing more success and are helping to restore eastern wild turkeys to East Texas. “This was an incredible way to kick off Higher Calling Wild Wishes Expeditions in 2020. The fact officials with TPWD and NWTF allow kids from our program to participate in their eastern turkey release is incredible. We are so grateful they get to see these amazing acts of conservation in action. TPWD and NWTF have made a big difference in the lives of Emily and Dustin,” Moore said.

Hill Country in search of the Texas native Guadalupe bass. “Wild Wishes has been around six years this year, and we have more than 100 young people in the program. This is the next step, and it is not only allowing us to take youth from our area into the west to learn about conservation but also to bring kids in places like Colorado and Montana into the program that started in Southeast Texas. It’s pretty exciting,” said Lisa Moore. “Special challenges usually disqualify young people for experiences like this. We are creating special opportunities for them only,” she said. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help make these trips possible for some special young people, go to kingdomzoo.com and click on the “Higher Calling Wild Wishes Expeditions” link.

Reannah Hollaway fits a GPS tracking collar on a desert bighorn ram at the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area near Alpine, Tx. Reannah is part of the Wild Wishes program and changed her major to wildlife conservation after receiving her initial wish encounter.

This summer, the program takes a group of graduating seniors and college-age girls from the program to Colorado on a wild sheep, Photo by Chester Moore, Jr. turkey, and elk quest and boys into Montana in search of bears, bison, mountain goats, and native trout. Another trip will be the Emily Odom and Dustin Wolfe of the Wild Wishes program second annual catch-and-release expedition for boys in the Texas release an eastern turkey in Titus County, TX.

A Dog’s Purpose

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a twelveyear-old family pet named Belker. The dog”s owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found the dog was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are

shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I”d never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don”t have to stay as long.”
