We asked for nominations for the annual Saline County Readers’ Choice contest in April 2023 and our readers responded immediately.
An outpouring from the public to our emails, social media accounts and in-office visits reminded us how important this contest is to Saline County.
Both the nomination and voting periods were shortened this year but by the end of the first week, we saw voting and engagement from our readers and the community that may best be described as ‘pre-pandemic’ levels. In order to maintain the public’s trust in our calculations, an impartial third party was paid to count the paper ballots and then they were added to the online votes. Email addresses were checked and the vote totals were verified.
Overall, 27% more votes were cast this year than in 2022.
You’ll see a few new things in the magazine this year. A few of our winners shared their stories with you. There are a few new categories this year. And a few categories have more than one runner up. As the total votes were being verified, we considered where there were natural breaks in reader response. For example, if there was only one vote separating 4th place from 3rd place, we included the 4th place business as a runner up too. Afterall, these are your favorite businesses.
On a side note, I’m pleased that we’ll be continuing to offer a digital directory of winners and runners up on www.SalineCourier.com until next year’s contest starts. You can access it 24/7/365.
As a new Saline County resident, the Readers’ Choice results were a great starting point for me to find some of those services and resources that we all need and I’m sure the 2023 results will be beneficial for other new folks in Saline County too.
Reader and community engagement is a great indicator of the importance The Saline Courier plays in Saline County to both the business community and its residents.
