THIS MAGAZINE HAS BEEN A JOURNEY
A
mong the top comments I receive as a newspaper publisher is this one — “Why don’t you all print more good news?” It’s a common theme. There’s a lot of negativity out there. The purpose of “Faith Magazine” is to address that concern. Nearly a year ago, we started the planning necessary to produce a magazine
focused on the activities of our area churches, its members, and The Gospel ... literally, “The Good News.” The name is appropriate. It took a lot of faith to get to this point. We started and stopped numerous times. It’s been a process. But we are proud of the results, and it’s only going to get better. “Faith” is your magazine. Whether you are reading it in a doctor’s office, while waiting to have your car repaired, or at home, we hope you like it and that it is a blessing to you. That’s our intent. There are so many great stories out there to tell. If we published a million issues of “Faith” we wouldn’t even scratch the surface. God willing, that will happen. I want to thank the advertisers who stepped up to the plate early on to support this publication. Without them, you wouldn’t be holding this in your hands right now. If you would like to join them, and support “Faith,” we’d love to talk with you. I hope you enjoy this magazine as much as we did making it. It’s been a journey, but one well worth taking.

f you think you have it rough, then consider this. Imagine being an orphan in the village of Lugazi
in the African country of Uganda where daily life entails walking one mile just to get to clean drinking
water, and then walking back another mile carrying a three-gallon can full of water that is then poured into a holding tank. Now picture doing this two or three times a day. The orphanage had tried twice to hand dig a well, but hit rock both times. Until recently this was the life of those orphans. A recent mission trip involving members of Wolf Creek Baptist Church in southern Whitley County, and Rainsville Community Church in Rainsville, Alabama, has changed that. In what he describes as “one of the most amazing things we were a part of,” Wolf Creek Baptist Church Pastor Kenny Carr noted that during a recent mission trip involving the two churches they were able to raise enough money so the orphanage could have a new well drilled. The cost was about $6,000. “We almost had enough money on our own, but we FaceTimed back home and talked to our church community and some folks here, and they wired some money to us,” Carr said. Wolf Creek and Rainsville recently received word that the well had been dug, water had been hit, and it tested clean meaning Lugazi orphans no longer have to carry water a mile multiple times daily just to have clean

Carr’s first trip to Uganda was back every year since then. While in Uganda during the recent trip, the group got to do a great many things, such as help orphanages, which cost about $875 a month to run, dedicate a well that it helped pay for, and hand out 250 witnessing dolls to a group of school children. Carr noted that the people of Uganda are so busy worrying about basic needs, such as where their next meal is going to come from and shoes without holes, that there isn’t

noting the divorce rate is very high in the ministry. “The church is like a mistress. It is very demanding,” McGuire said. McGuire said while he believes, as the Bible teaches, that the only way to go to Heaven is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, he takes a more positive and uplifting approach when sharing the message of the Gospel with people. “You can’t ignore Hell. It is true. It is in the Bible and people have to be told that,” McGuire said. “But I think people respond to love.” He explained that most people with whom he has had this conversation will begin by saying they would hope to go to Heaven if they were to die that night. McGuire will then ask if they were to stand before God and He was to ask why He should let them into Heaven, what would be their response. “Most people, who were raised in the church, or have a religious background, would say they try to be a good person, go to church as often as possible, or do this or that,” McGuire explained. “By that answer, they are trying to be their own savior,” he explained.
“Most people do.” While acknowledging the answer, McGuire said he will go on to share what the Bible teaches and what he believes. “I tell them that Heaven is a free gift, but that you can’t earn or deserve it. It is a gift of God. The reason it is a free gift is because man is a sinner. We have all sinned, “McGuire explained. “The next thing we believe is that God is a God of justice and He loves everybody and wants everyone to go to Heaven. However, God is a God of justice and He has to punish sin. “That means I have got a problem. I am a sinner. I want to go to Heaven. But God has to forgive.” “We believe that God has solved that problem in the form of Jesus. We believe God the Son, died on the cross and rose from the grave to purchase a place in Heaven that He gives us as a free gift. The gift is received by faith,” McGuire explained. “You have to ask God to forgive you for your sins. You have to ask Jesus to come into your life and be your savior. You have to transfer trust from yourself to Christ.” McGuire said he then asks the

As to what retirement holds, McGuire said he and his wife will be moving to Lebanon, Ohio where one of the couple’s five children lives. In addition to five children, McGuire and his wife have 12 grandchildren. “My wife’s ministry is to our grandchildren,” McGuire said. “My plans are to do whatever God wants me to do,” he said. “I learned a long time ago, if you want to make God laugh, try to tell Him what you are going to do.” McGuire said there is a Methodist church in Lebanon and he is going to knock on the door and offer to help in any way needed. “All I know, is I’m going to serve God,” he said.
