Historic Downtown Square

The square is located in Hodgenville’s downtown historic district and features local businesses, eateries, and attractions including the famed Lincoln Statues.

ADOLPH A. WEINMANN LINCOLN STATUE

Located on the square in Hodgenville, the Abraham Lincoln statue sits in front of the Lincoln Museum. The 7-foot-tall bronze statue mounted on pink granite was created by German-born sculptor Adolph A. Weinmann and dedicated in 1909 during the Lincoln Centennial Ceremony. Re-bronzed in 1985, the statue receives an annual cleaning from the Hodgenville Rotary Club. Weinman is best remembered as the designer of the “Walking Liberty” half dollar and the “Mercury” dime as well as various military medals.

THE BOY LINCOLN STATUE

The Boy Lincoln statue was designed by DaubFirmin of California and dedicated on May 31, 2008, as part of the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration. With a book in hand and his dog Honey, which he rescued and nursed back to health, at his side, Lincoln’s sculpture is located in the circle on the square, referred to by locals as the “squircle” and faces the seated Lincoln statue, making this area a ‘must’ photo opportunity for visitors and locals alike.

ATTRACTIONS

Knob Creek Boyhood Home

Raised in a single room log cabin, the boy who would grow up to become the 16th President was shaped by his early life experiences on the Kentucky frontier. The history at the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek is rich in the heritage of Lincoln and his childhood. Moving to the 230-acre farm in 1811, the Lincolns rented 30 acres from the time Abraham was two until he was seven years old, when the family left for Indiana. Here he played, helped plant crops, went to school, and encountered slavery for the first time. Lincoln’s earliest memories at Knob Creek helped mold him into the man who would grow up to lead the nation through the turbulent years of the Civil War. Located north of Hodgenville on U.S. 31E, the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek is overseen by the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. It

6

was added to the National Park System in 2001, making LaRue County the only county in the country to contain two national park sites. A symbolic historic cabin sits on the site, at the approximate location of the Lincoln’s home next to Knob Creek, where young Lincoln nearly drowned before being rescued by a friend, Austin Gollaher. Built in 1933 and located on-site, the Knob Creek Tavern has served as a restaurant, gift shop, and dance hall over the years; the National Park Service plans to reopen the tavern as a visitor center in 2020. The park also features a ranger station, picnic area and the 3-mile Overlook Trail, which leads hikers to breathtaking views of the Knob Creek Valley.

Renovations on the tavern will begin sometime late summer or early fall, and is planned to be operational summer of 2021. Grounds are open daily during daylight hours year round and admission to the park is free. The Boyhood Home will not be staffed with Park Rangers this year due to the renovation project. For more information about the Boyhood Home, visit nps. gov/abli or follow the park on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. ATTRACTIONS

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace

For more than a century, people from around the world have journeyed to LaRue County to honor the humble beginnings of Abraham Lincoln. LINCOLN BEGINNINGS Moving from nearby Elizabethtown to Hodgenville, Lincoln’s parents Thomas and Nancy Lincoln were among the early customers at Robert Hodgen’s Mill. Abraham Lincoln was born on a snowy Sunday on February 12, 1809 in the log cabin at his father’s Sinking Spring Farm where the family lived for two years before establishing a home at Knob Creek to the north near Athertonville. PLACE FOR A PRESIDENT Near the end of the 19th century, national attention focused on Hodgenville as the place of Lincoln’s birth. The Lincoln Farm Association, composed of such notable people as Mark Twain, Robert Collier, and William

Howard Taft, purchased Lincoln’s birthplace in 1906 “for the purpose of honoring and perpetuating the memory of Abraham Lincoln.” The association eventually raised $350,000 to build a memorial for the 16th President, which stands today on the Sinking Spring Farm as a testament of respect for Lincoln. NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK Now managed by the National Park Service, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park averages 200,000 visitors annually. Constructed between 1909 and 1911, the country’s first memorial to Lincoln sits atop fifty-six steps representing the fifty-six years of Lincoln’s life and enshrines a symbolic birthplace cabin. The visitor center contains exhibits, activities and a documentary film entitled

Discover LaRue County | www.laruecountyherald.com

“Abraham Lincoln – The Kentucky Years.” The park features nature trails as well as nearby picnic facilities across the road. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round, but will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New YEars Day. The Park itself closes at 5 p.m. but the grounds are open from dawn to dusk. Lincoln Days Festival

Multiple Lincoln presenters are pictured walking together in the 2019 Lincoln Days Parade. The parade takes place during the two day annual festival and attracts Lincoln enthusiasts from across the country.

October 3-4, 2020 Held the first full-weekend in October, the annual Lincoln Days festival celebrates all things Lincoln and a whole lot more. During the celebration, local clubs and organizations sponsor a variety of activities and events geared to honor the life of Abraham Lincoln, Hodgenville’s most famous native son. This will be the 49th year for the event, which features a weekend of pioneer games, craft exhibits, a quilt show, an art contest, Little Abe and Sarah contest, the 5K Railsplitter Run, a parade and Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln look-alike contests. Local food stands and vendors line the streets and there is plenty of country, gospel, rock and bluegrass music to go around throughout the weekend event.

8

Lincoln Days is proud to announce country music artist J. D. Shelburne will be performing live during this year’s festival. The theme of the 2020 Lincoln Days festival is “Straight From Kentucky.” The Lincoln Days Celebration, Inc. was chartered in 1975 as a non-profit, non-partisan organization. Located in downtown Hodgenville and Creekfront Park, this year’s festival will take place October 3-4, 2020. ATTRACTIONS PIONEER GAMES AND RAILSPLITTING CONTEST Some of the most unique and entertaining aspects of Lincoln Days are the Pioneer Games and Railsplitting competitions. A longtime LaRue County tradition, most events are based on skills that would have been essential to pioneer living, and the

rest are just plain, muddy fun. Eight local teams compete in a dozen pioneer games events that include: team railsplitting, egg toss, crosscut saw, corn shelling, horseshoe toss, water boil, spoon relay, tug-of-war, bucket brigade and the pole ride, where contestants use pillows to try and knock each other into a six-foot deep mud

pit while straddling a log. The Railsplitting competition celebrates an activity closely associated with Abraham Lincoln during his lifetime and features both professional and amateur class events. Participants attend from all over the country to see how fast they can split a ten footoak log into eight evenly sized rails.

Located 15 minutes north of Hodgenville in New Haven, the Kentucky Railway Museum gives visitors the inside track about how railroads shaped the state. Tour historic exhibits and collections including a L&N steam engine #152 and a WWII 40-et-8 European boxcar, then hop on a train for a family excursion. While the museum itself lies in Nelson County, excursion routes run through a scenic section of LaRue County. The museum uses 17 miles of old Louisville and Nashville Railroad line, once the lifeblood of New Haven and the Rolling Fork River Valley. From the train, you can see the Historic Howell House, the only surviving structure of the Battle of New Haven, where three companies of the Kentucky cavalry attacked in 1862. Led by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, the cavalry attacked across the Howell farm in an

effort to destroy the railroad bridge spanning the Rolling Fork River. The museum attracts more than than 40,000 visitors annually and offers special train excursions throughout the year including dining trips, mystery dinners, a Great Train Robbery and holiday-themed trains at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

The kid-friendly day out with Thomas the Tank Engine event takes place for two weekends in June. Kentucky Railway Museum 136 S. Main Street • New Haven 502-549-5470 • kyrail.org

ATTRACTIONS

The Lincoln Jamboree

The Lincoln Jamboree, first opened on September 11, 1954, will be celebrating its 66th year in business in 2020, and is a well-known event for music lovers. LaRue visitors looking for some of the best in live country music, look no further than the Lincoln Jamboree. A nationally recognized music stage show, this longstanding Hodgenville tradition will celebrate its 66th year in 2020. Established in 1954, the Lincoln Jamboree is the longest running entertainment business in the United States that has operated under one ownership. For 64 years, Joel Ray Sprowls not only owned, but produced and emceed the show each and every week. It wasn’t until Spring of 2019 that Sprowls turned over managerial duties to Jay Henderson. Sprowls began his show business career while still a student, organizing a talent show fundraiser in the Buffalo High School gym. Later that year, he rented the vacant Cardinal Theater in Hodgenville for 20 weeks to open a country music hall. In spite of public skepticism, word of the show spread and soon Joel Ray was hosting two shows every Saturday to accommodate the crowds in the 350-seat theater. Over the years, thousands of visitors have journeyed to Hodgenville from across the country to hear the Jamboree Gang and other guest performers present a three-hour, family-oriented show of music and comedy every Saturday night. Many big names have performed at the Jamboree and continue to do so. In the past such names as Ernest Tubb, Lorrie Morgan, Lonzo and Oscar, John Conlee, and the Oak Ridge Boys have all played to the Jamboree crowd. This

year Georgette Jones, Dean Miller, Sweepy Walker, Phillip Steinmetz, Hawkshaw Hawkins Jr. (all relatives of big Nashville Stars), Paulette Carlson (of Highway 101), and one BIG name from Nashville that can’t be released until September are all scheduled to appear. At ninety-two years of age, Joel Ray has had his share of life-threatening experiences including a series of strokes, sickness and a 1984 plane crash that put him in the hospital 20 days with a broken nose, ankle and vertebra in his lower back. Still, the show goes on. Sprowls, now a resident of Sunrise Manor Nursing Home has always insisted that the show will go on. Henderson, current Jamboree manager, along with Mary Lois Morris, a longtime employee and caregiver to Sprowls have kept the Jamboree dream alive. Today, the Jamboree continues to offer

weekly shows and also features a small museum dedicated to country music legends with clothing items, instruments, photographs, autographed letters and other relics owned by Elvis, Ernest Tubb and Dolly Parton. Henderson’s plans to continue the legacy of what Joel Ray Sprowls started 66 years ago, and said ‘the future is bright and the show will go on’ and will for many years to come. The Lincoln Jamboree is located on Lincoln Farm Road near the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site. Ticket prices range from $10.50 to $12.50 and can be purchased by calling 270-3583545. LaRue Genealogy Society Rich in heritage, LaRue County is also rich in biographical resources and people dedicated to preserving the past. In 1951, the LaRue County Historical Society was formed for this purpose. While it eventually disbanded, some former members decided to reorganize a group that would work to preserve local history. In 2002, they formed the LaRue County Genealogy Society. Located on the second floor of the Hodgenville Civic Center, the Genealogy Society library is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and volunteers make every effort to assist anyone who wants to learn more about their family history.

COMMUNITY

The Genealogy Society also promotes the cleaning and preservation of the Little Mount Cemetery as well as obtaining and placing local interpretive markers about LaRue County’s history. The Genealogy Society meets four times a year; the group also publishes a quarterly journal. In addition to a large library of donated materials and history binders compiling information on longtime LaRue County families, the society also features artifact exhibits and a military research room.

History and faith in LaRue

LaRue County’s history of faith is shown through two of the oldest churches in Kentucky, Nolynn Baptist Church and South Fork Baptist Church, that are largest in LaRue. According to Kentucky historical marker number 1114, the first baptism in Kentucky took place in Nolin Creek in 1782 when “seven persons were baptized by Rev. Benjamin Lynn. Lynn, who founded South Fork Church, also inspired the creek’s name and later the Nolynn Baptist Church’s name after getting lost on a hunting trip when his companions declared “Here is the Nole (knoll) but No Lynn. Over time, more congregations were formed and by 1850, there were eleven churches located in LaRue County. These consisted of various denominations, some split over the topic of slavery. After the civil war, several churches were built; one historical structure that still stands is the Hodgenville Christian Church. Built in 1877 with Romanesque influences, this brick church was constructed just off the square and is one of the oldest buildings in town. Today the county has more than 65 churches and places of worship that provide many services for the community including youth programs, food pantries and other resources.

Kentucky Ag Safety Education

AGRICULTURE

“How many of you live or work in a farm environment?” A roomful of hands goes up when speaker Dale Dobson asks the question at a LaRue County High School agriculture safety day— which is exactly what makes farm safety education important. In the early 1990s, statistics showed farming to be three times more dangerous in Kentucky than any other state and the adjoining counties of LaRue, Hardin and Nelson Counties had the highest number of farm-related injuries in the nation. Figuring out how to lower fatalities and injuries from farm accidents was a big challenge, but LaRue County’s own Dale Dobson has done just that. In the 90’s, Dobson started holding ag safety schools on his farm and later expanded the program to include training for regional EMS and fire departments. By 1998, former Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Billy Ray Smith had appointed Dobson

as the Farm Safety Field Officer for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Dobson began implementing his farm safety program at farms, schools and emergency departments throughout the state.

Now acting as the KDA’s Safety Administrator, Dobson continues to give courses ranging from ATV safety and grain bin rescue to tractor and lawnmower rescue. His realistic safety demonstrations use actual farm machinery to teach emergency personnel precise rescue methods for incidents involving heavy pieces of equipment. Dobson’s training exhibits include a rollover tractor simulator, which demonstrates the correct use of a rollover bar and seat belt to protect a tractor operator as well as a miniature grain bin and wagon, which illustrates the danger of being submerged and trapped by grain. For more information about the program, contact Dobson at 270-8729570 or email him at dale.dobson@ ky.gov

LaRue County COVID-19 HEALTHCARE

On March 6, 2020 the first case of coronavirus COVID-19 was reported in Kentucky. During the weeks that followed, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear ordered schools to cease in-person instruction and ordered the closure of restaurants, child care facilities, and front facing stores that were considered to be non-essential. City and county governments were closed as well as the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace and Boyhood Home National Parks. At the time of this publication, the global COVID19 pandemic continues. Many businesses listed in this publication are open but are doing business differently as the pandemic continues. Some businesses are doing curb-side or drive-thru options, while others are doing business online or in an abbreviated status. With the yearlong publication status of this guide, we encourage you to support these and other small businesses in our community now and when the pandemic guidelines have been lifted, as life returns to normal and we move forward together. LaRue County has so much to offer and we are thankful for each and every business and person in our community that will come back even better and stronger this year and in the future.

Industry in LaRue County continues to grow, so the LaRue County School system is partnering with area technology centers and industry leaders to offer training for their students to enable them to immediately enter the workforce after graduation, by being ‘work and career ready’. LaRue County High School students have the opportunity to enroll in various courses at the Nelson County Area Technology center which is in the process of transitioning into a regional career academy. LaRue County Superintendent David Raleigh said working with the Nelson County center opens up new learning opportunities and career pathways for his students. Students participating in health science classes engage remotely using Google Classroom, video and other resources. Hands-on instruction in other trades such as carpentry and electrical work are conducted at the Bardstown center, as well as an automotive department class. The center is part of the New Skills for Youth Grant, a planning grant awarded collectively to Nelson County, LaRue County, Marion County and Bardstown Independent school districts to look at how the districts can create a “regional academy” to provide career and technical education to all students and increase access to dual credit opportunities, post-secondary pathways, work-based learning experiences and industry-recognized credentials and certificates.

Milling and distilling to modern industry: a history of Larue Industry For much of LaRue County’s history industry has been limited to flour mills and distilleries. Hodgenville itself lends its name from the local mill owned by a Robert Hodgens. Hodgens’ Mill became the first mill to be founded on the Nolin River in 1789 and the

plantation land surrounding the mill owned by Hodgens’ was eventually used to create the town of Hodgenville in 1818. Visitors to town might notice a large concrete grain silo on the west side of town which is the only standing remnant of the Hodgenville

Roller Mill. The roller mill was in operation through the late 19th century to the early 1970’s and sold brands such as “Belle of LaRue and “Old Kentucky Home to the local community. In an age before supermarkets when many people grew their own food, the mills that

Make sure your trash cans have lids that can be securely fastened or use bungee cords to hold them in place. If you see litter, pick it up. Roadway Litter - Tobacco products, mostly cigarette butts, are the most littered item on U.S. roadways (38%). This is followed by paper (22%) and plastic (19%). Most of the litter on roads and highways is caused by people. Research shows that littering along roadways is generated by the following individual actions:

once dotted LaRue County served as a backbone for the local community. Distilling whiskey goes back as far as milling in the history of the county. In the eastern part of the county Wattie Boone, cousin of frontiersman Daniel Boone, founded the first distillery on Knob Creek around the 1780’s around modern day Athertonville. Thomas Lincoln, father of Abraham Lincoln, is believed to have once worked at the Boone Distillery while they lived in the area. The fine waters of Knob Creek both provided drinking water for the future president but also served well for the production of whiskey. In 1867, John Atherton founded a distillery on Knob Creek, an operation which would find great success. Atherton opened another distillery on the opposite side of Knob Creek and founded the town of Athertonville for his workers. At one time, over 200 people worked at the distilleries and Athertonville had a rail line running from New Haven, a hotel, a large general store, a post office, and a booming community. The Atherton Distillery was not only the largest employer in the county but was also considered the largest sour mash whiskey distillery in the world. The arrival of Prohibition in 1919 however spelled the end to much of Athertonville’s prosperity. Even though whiskey would be produced for several decades after the repeal of prohibition, it again never reached the heights of pre-1919 Athertonville. Today, LaRue County hosts a variety of new industries that both provide employment for people of the county and serve as a source of pride for the community. Global exports range from car airbag parts to wooden whiskey and wine barrels. LaRue County finds itself strategically located in the heart of Kentucky with easy access to major road arteries such as I-65. While Abraham Lincoln may be LaRue County’s most famous claim to fame, the things that the county produces continue to help the community thrive. Discover LaRue County | www.laruecountyherald.com

The oldest continuously operating business in LaRue County, the LaRue County Herald News has been reporting local news for more than 130 years. In 1879, the first newspaper published in LaRue County was a monthly paper called the Public Advertiser. The paper was printed upstairs over the T.P. Howard General Store about where Smith Drug Store is located on Lincoln Boulevard today. On May 6, 1885, the first issue of The LaRue County Herald News, the county’s first weekly

newspaper, was published by C.C. Howard and attorney J.E. Wright in the same building used to print the Public Advertiser. The LaRue County Herald News office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The newspaper publishes each Wednesday with a circulation of about 3,400. Its website, laruecountyherald.com, is updated daily with breaking news, obituaries and local stories of interest.
