Coast guard member shares love of lake

By DEBRA FERRELL If thereÕ s one thing Altavista resident Bill Martin loves É itÕ s being on the water. Ò I enjoy the water. IÕ ve been on it since age 15 and owned boats most of my life. Right now, I have three,Ó he said. A part of his life centers around the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 85 that was established in Altavista back in the 1960s when Smith Mountain Lake was forming. “The flotilla does a lot of things to promote boating safety as well as teach classes,Ó he said. Ò We also help with search and rescue when needed and perform safety patrols around the lake.Ó He pointed out that auxiliarists are not members of law enforcement and do not have that authority. Their facility is positioned about midway of the lake on land appropriated by Appalachian Electric Power (AEP). There are two flotillas with about 50 active members. Ò IÕ ve been a member for eons!Ó Martin said. He shared that heÕ s Ò proud of what weÕ ve accomplishedÓ and wished they had kept count of all the boating safety classes theyÕ ve conducted since the 1960s. A big part of the excitement of being in the auxiliary right now stems from a special gift from the Coast Guard É a sturdy motorboat that was declared surplus when it had run its course with the Coast Guard. Ò This well-built boat is pretty awesome! ItÕ s 27 feet long with twin 250 horsepower motors. I have no idea where itÕ s been in the past,Ó he said. Martin explained that heÕ s not sure exactly how it came about for the auxiliary to get the boat.
10 | Lake Life 2020 | TWO
“I know we were made aware that it was available to us about two years ago. We applied for it, got it, and went to Norfolk to pick it up. We maintain it with no tax dollars from the government. Our revenue comes from dues paid by members and donations.” He also pointed out that the boat needed some work when they got it with both motors requiring extensive work. “You can rest assured that it was pretty much worn out when the Coast Guard declared it surplus, but it works well for our purposes patrolling the lake. It was no prize and took the dedication of a lot of members to get it in the shape it’s in now.” One of those purposes included it being fully decorated for Christmas in the Altavista Christmas Parade. “On an excitement level, I think it’s safe to say we were second only to Santa Claus,” he joked. “Young kids look at it and think it’s awesome. We enjoyed passing out candy as we passed by.” There was a popular demand for the boat to appear in the parade again this year after a good reception last year (the first time they were in the parade.) It was no easy feat getting it here since it’s rather tricky getting such a large boat out of the water onto a trailer and hauling it to Altavista. “It’s not like getting a pleasure boat loaded on a trailer,” he said. “This boat is heavy!” Being so big and stocky helps it make a real statement on the lake during patrols. Debra Ferrell/Lake Life
Altavista resident Bill Martin is a longtime member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 85 that was established in Altavista back in the 1960s when Smith Mountain Lake was forming.
Not everyone can drive it either. “You have to be trained and qualified. I’ve been boating for years, and I’m not currently qualified to operate it,” Martin said. The auxiliary meets once a month at the Coast Guard Station on Smith Mountain Lake. Anyone can join, but one must pass a number of classes to be a full-blown member. “It’s quite involved,” he said. “You have to be really interested and motivated to do all that’s required.” Boating safety classes are open to all. “But the class barely touches the surface of what full-fledge members take in a number of areas of discipline such as search and rescue, radio, weather, etc.,” he said. “You can qualify in as many or as few as you like. It takes constant updating to stay qualified. I do one update every other year.” One great perk of being a member is that the membership card will allow the person on any military base in the country (to visit). During the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, members were asked to acquire additional qualifications to become members of Homeland Security. “At one time, we were trained to watch for and report any suspicious activity that could be linked to terrorists. We were guaranteed to have a member of law enforcement on the scene within 30 minutes,” he stated. The auxiliary is the only volunteer organization in America that was created by an act of Congress. Martin said that they are available for military funerals upon request. He is married to Johelen Martin of Altavista. They have two daughters, Marie Mitchell and Michele Grossman.

Students’ living history museum made interactive
Lake Life 2020 |

| 15
By PETER MASON Earlier this year, sixth grade Staunton River Middle School students transformed into influential figures in history through costume and presented their person in their most creative way. The annual Living History Museum Exhibit project was started by SRMS teacher Teri Boles who explained that she got the idea from another teacher who did something similar. “I made a sixth grade version of it so we could incorporate some research,” Boles said. “Since then, every year another teacher picked up on it and decided to do it with their students, and it’s now a school interactive event, which is pretty cool.” SRMS teacher Sharon Blake, who also participates each year in the project, said this is an example of how the middle school uses Project Based Learning strategies to engage with the students. “The students are extremely excited about this project,” Blake said. “They have been completing research on their influential person since they have returned from winter break.” Earlier this year, the students dressed up as their influential person and presented their research in a Living Museum element. “This was an interactive learning experience, not only for the students, but the visitors as well,” Blake said. “ The students put in a lot of hard work with their successful use of blended learning.” Blake said the project was extended for all of the sixth graders to do in a museum form six years ago. This was the first year that the project was completely interactive between the students’ presentations and the experience for the visitors. The students had the option to do a Google slide project, a video diary or a trifold poster presentation. The exhibits were set up during the

English class periods for people to visit. Visitors included other students from both the middle school and the high school as well as teachers, staff members and parents. “The visitation is where we made it more interactive for the kids,” Blake said. “We wanted to be able to show that their Chromebooks are a tool for learning.” Blake explained that many of the older students look for the person in history that they presented when they were in sixth grade. “Presenting as a sixth grader can make them nervous.” Blake said. “Once we explained to them that they weren’t presenting one at a time and it was everybody next to each other, which
we practiced, they felt a lot better.” Some of the famous people in history that the students presented included Elvis Presley, Sally Ride, George Washington and many more. “It’s just a different way of learning,” Blake said. “Traditionally they’d do research and write the paper, but by doing it this way, we’re trying to get the kids more invested in their work. Writing a research paper is a good skill, but with this, they take a lot of pride in what they’re doing.”

Staunton River Middle School’s gym transformed into a living history museum for sixth graders to give their presentations.
Blake said that making the project fun made it seem like much less of a burden of a project for the students. The students got excited about dressing up in a costume when they saw the slide shows from previous years, and they got to stay dressed up throughout the day. “Over the years I think every year, the more we did it, the more people were excited about it,” Boles said. “Now we have people out of the school who came to visit. With our principals being involved, that’s definitely been a big help. I would say this year with it being as interactive as it is, it’s a better experience for the visitors. It helps our visitors to get more involved with it as well.”

Advocating for essential oils

By PETER MASON How can essential oils help with various conditions such as allergies and muscle soreness? Independent Wellness advocate Kimberly Tyson, of the company Anatole, has been holding a series of introduction classes in the Smith Mountain Lake area to educate the community on essential oils. Anatole is a wellness company was established by Tyson in 2016 and believes in a holistic approach to health and wellness. It specializes in the use of essential oils and believe therapeutic grade essential oils are a necessity for an “incredible lifestyle.” Essential oil products are made, however, by the company doTERRA. “Hopefully these oils will help people have longer healthier lives and not have congenital illnesses going on,” Tyson said. “We’re going to start setting up introduction to oils classes every week, and we’re in the process of figuring out where we’re going to be doing that.” Tyson was doing these classes monthly, and she explained that she had enough interest now that she wanted to start doing it weekly once she can find a location. “These products are always safe and natural,” Tyson said. “They’re effective because they work and they’re cost effective compared to traditional medicine.” The doTERRA website states that essential oils are “naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils provide plants with protection against environmental threats and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.” Tyson explained that these products are designed to help the body heal and be the best it can be. “Essential oils go in and work on the cellular level,” Tyson said. “They are so many times more effective than herbs, and they’re not synthetic so our body recognizes them and allows them in. That’s why they work.” Tyson added that doTERRA does research to make sure a particular oil will address specific issue. These oils can be applied internally, topically and aromatically and help with things like joint discomfort. “Some of my customers say that they best thing that’s helped them was to start drinking lemon water,” Tyson said. “One drop of our essential oil or lemon is worth 23 actual lemons, so it’s a lot more cost effective.” Tyson explained that she currently has a small group that she is teaching about these products in the Smith Mountain Lake area, but it is growing. “It’s always hard to find the right time for everybody,” Tyson said. “We

More information is also available at anatoleadvantage.com or doterra.com. “There’s a lot of work to be done,” Tyson said. “The company that I work with has become a $2 billion company, and their goal is to become a $20 billion company. They want people to be healthy. That’s their goal and their mission, to have people living healthier better lives.”

Patricia Schoen’s 2019 book entitled “Hello Darling” is a collection of letters between her grandparents during World War II when they were separated for the duration of the war. In the novel, her grandparents’ separation strengthened their bonds of love for family and each other. From training to promotions in rank, Joseph Anthony Guiffre wrote love letters to his wife, Margaret Guiffre. The novel highlights Joseph Guiffre’s immunities to the forces that were stacked against him, and he wrote almost one letter every day throughout five campaigns and the post V-E Day occupation in Germany. Schoen explained that this novel is her first published piece of work. She doesn’t plan on publishing another book at the moment. Joseph and Margaret Guiffre were Schoen’s grandparents, which is what inspired her to put these letters into a book. Schoen is the daughter of William Guiffre. “I really wrote this for my dad,” Schoen said. “I felt like this was a gift that he and his family should have. I do like to write and do like the research process. Researching for this topic was complicated for me because of all of the emotions involved because of what war is.” She explained when writing the book, she had to discipline herself to stay focused on the things that her grandfather wrote in his letters because how multifaceted she considered World War II to be. “It may seem kind of hop-scotchy to people with the way my
remarks are written,” Schoen said. “They’re all based on things in the letters that I found interesting or compelling.” Schoen holds a bachelors degree in recreation education from SUNY Cortland, according to the book. This experience is what allowed her to be able to work with the elderly as an activities therapist and companion, as well as with young people. She lives in Maine in a home that she and her husband John built together and raised their three children. She takes pride in her faith in God and has also been involved in her church and community teaching alternative education, coaching drama and serving as an executive director of a nonprofit organization for homeless teenagers. She also opened a home for teen mothers, volunteers in her community, performs in local theatre and sings in area bands. Her uncle, Art Guiffre, of Smith Mountain Lake, is selling the novel in this area for anyone interested in reading about his family’s experience during World War II. He can be reached at (540) 721-8942. “It was amazing because I knew what the book was going to look like,” Schoen said. “I went through it so many dozens of times, but when I actually held the first in my hand, all I could think was that it was huge. It’s a full hard cover book so it was pretty exciting. I hope that people understand what a wealth of information lies with family members and things that family members have saved. If you want to get to know a family member who has passed away that you only knew for a short time, you should look into their dusty boxes and see what you can find.”

A house full of reptiles! Snakes and lizards take field trip to meet students
Lake Life 2020 |
By PETER MASON Many couples often find hobbies to do together including working out, gardening, music, etc. The hobby that Smith Mountain Lake residents Joe and Jess Pratt do together is not something that just anyone can do. They raise reptiles in their house, and have made their home into a zoo for snakes, lizards, turtles and other such creatures. The animals are not just bound to the house, however. Earlier this year, some of the Pratts’ snakes and lizards took a field trip to Rocky Mount Elementary School for children to learn just how lovable these animals can be as pets. Jess Pratt is a teacher at Rocky Mount as well. She and her husband explained to the children that while people can be afraid of snakes, snakes are afraid of us, too, and we’re bigger than they are. “I’ve loved reptiles since I was a little boy,” Joe Pratt said. “I was that typical boy out in the woods chasing down snakes, frogs, turtles and whatever I could get my hands on but I never owned them as pets growing up.” Joe Pratt said that he and his wife, along with their two children JJ Pratt, 13, and Alba Pratt, 15, decided they wanted to get more “exotic” pets. The first animal they got was a hedgehog. After going to a reptile show together, the family eventually decided to get reptiles as pets. “It was like Pringles, you can’t have just one,” Joe Pratt said. “We
TWO
had one, then we had a whole bunch, and it just kind of grew from there.” At first the family had the reptiles for the purpose of breeding them, but then they decided that they wanted to go around and do as an educational program for people. “So many people are afraid of them,” Joe Pratt said. “We just wanted to teach people that these animals are not something to be feared. They can be loved and they be wonderful pets if you take care of them properly.” The Pratts have had fun doing presentations for schools, youth groups, church groups and other such organizations. “You need to do research and talk to people that have experience with them,” Joe Pratt said. “With reptiles, specific species of reptiles have specific requirements for heat so you need to know how much heat they need.” Caring for reptiles such as snakes and lizards requires things such as heat lights or heat pads. It’s also good to have stimulation in their enclosures including rocks to hide on or climb under. While reptiles often don’t eat as frequently as other animals, it is important to have the food for them on hand. For the ball pythons, Joe Pratt said that he feeds them frozen dead rats. He only feeds them once a week though, and said sometimes snakes can go up to a year without eating.

30 years of Lake Quilters Guild The Lake Quilters Guild reached a milestone: 30 years! The guild began in 1990 through the efforts of neighbors Ginny Watson and Betty Hatfield, explained the group’s current president, Sue Whitney. The guildÕ s earliest membership comprised of a group of eight women who met in WatsonÕ s home. A focus of the club is community service projects, including an annual Ò sew-inÓ in February. This yearÕ s sew-in resulted in numerous stuffed bears that were distributed to area hospitals and emergency responders. Ò ItÕ s a very charitably-minded organization,Ó Whitney said. Ò ItÕ s fantastic, the outreach that they have.Ó Other special events include the guildÕ s annual Quilt Show. The first Quilt Show was held in 1994 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Since that time, the show has been held biennially with the 2020 Quilt Show scheduled to occur April 17-18 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish (depending on status of coronavirus news). The Lake Quilters Guild meets monthly and is Ò open to anybody who wants to learn,Ó Whitney said. In addition to the larger guild, there are individual quilting bees that meet in each otherÕ s homes. The guild also has a couple of master quilters who are willing to give their time to teach a class or share an interesting technique, she said. Ò We all bring different skills to this guild, and whatÕ s wonderful is that everyone is willing to share,Ó Whitney said. The Lake Quilters Guild generally meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at Trinity Ecumenical Parish. For more information, visit lakequilters.org.

Dr. Carolyn Thomas remembered Dr. Carolyn Lee Thomas was a founding member of the Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Project and retired as a beloved Ferrum College professor of Environmental Science. She was just four days shy of her 72nd birthday, and had just enjoyed a long weekend with her family, when her 20-month battle with ovarian cancer took a turn for the worse. Hundreds of people attended her Celebration of Life service earlier this year, and she will be remembered for her contribution to the community. “We are heartbroken over the death of Carolyn Thomas, who was for so many of us a model of fierce intellect, creative imagination and personal courage,” said President David L. Johns. “She had a way of exciting curiosity in her students and of inviting us all to be better people. Her fingerprints are on all of our lives — thousands of us — and we will miss her dearly.”

At Ferrum College, Thomas served as Science Camp director for many years. As a founding member of the Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Project, she directed it for 32 years, leading a team of Ferrum College faculty and students in conjunction with the Smith Mountain Lake Association to analyze the lakeÕ s water quality during the summer months. She received the Melvin Johnston Award from the Smith Mountain Lake Association for her work on the Water Quality Project. Ò She was as passionate about water quality, environmental science, the natural world, and women in science on the day she retired as her first day 41 years ago when she began teaching,Ó wrote Ferrum CollegeÕ s Associate Professor of Environmental Science Delia Heck. Heck taught alongside Thomas and worked with her on the Water Quality Project. Born on Jan. 18, 1948, in Orlando, Florida, Thomas knew from an early age that she was happiest in nature. She received her Bachelor of Science in biology from Florida Southern College and went on to earn a Master of Science in zoology from the University of Georgia. Thomas then received her Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Virginia Tech. In 1974, she met her soulmate Bob Pohlad when she enrolled at the University of Central Florida to begin work on her masterÕ s degree. Pohlad was working as the teaching assistant in ThomasÕ s cytogenetics class while completing graduate work at the University. He helped Thomas with her microscope projects and labs. Ò We just hit it off,Ó Pohlad explained. Ò She was someone who loved to travel as I did, was a little bit hippie in her sandals and long hair, and was a free spirit that I loved talking to. We spent hours talking about everything including our common upbringing.Ó The pair found many similarities in their lives, including losing their fathers as young teenagers, loving sports, and filling leadership roles — Thomas as president of her ZTA sorority and Pohlad as president of his youth group and biology club. Thomas and Pohlad were forced to begin a longdistance relationship after Pohlad was accepted into the University of GeorgiaÕ s doctorate program. The couple wrote to each other daily and traveled back and forth from Florida to Georgia as often as possible. They couldnÕ t stand being apart any longer and threw a surprise wedding in March 1975 at ThomasÕ homeplace on Lake Howell in Maitland, Florida. Many of the guests were unaware they were coming to a wedding

ceremony until the minister arrived. “We were married outside under the trees on the lake,” recalled Pohlad. “After the wedding ceremony, we played flag football and they threw us in the lake. I remember we left town that evening to head to the beach for our honeymoon one-night stay and couldn’t find a place, and ended up at a motel back in town.” In 1978, the Pohlad-Thomas couple found themselves at Ferrum College when Pohlad was hired as a professor of biology and horticulture. Thomas taught middle school science for a year but quickly accepted a position teaching environ environmental science at Ferrum College in 1979, where she and Pohlad remained as professors for the next 41 years. They both retired in May 2019. Once asked in a 2018 interview how she and Pohlad were able to work for so long at not only the same college but in the same department with offices next door to each other, she answered: “It unworks because we communicate. We have to un derstand each other staying up late, working with students. We have to keep talking, although we don’t always agree. The advantage is that we both underhave these responsibilities together, so we under stand them.” In addition to their budding careers at Ferrum College and Thomas’s continued pursuit through graduate work, the couple became parents when their son Chris was born in November 1979. In December 1984, their second son Tim was born. Thomas’s legacy now lives on in her two sons, their wives, and her four grandchildren. Thomas was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage IV in May 2018. During treatment, she remained positive and active, continuing as often as possible with her 50-year habit of walking multiple miles a day. “I just pushed through the pain,” Thomas said in the same 2018 interview. “I derive my spirit from friends and family. I heal better through them. But I’m also a scientist, so I believe in medication and treatment.” Thomas’s work will not be soon forgotten. In addition to the thousands of lives she touched, Thomas and Pohlad jointly re received the Ecological Society of America’s Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Ecological Education in 2016. Thomas and Pohlad were married for nearly 45 years. They spent

their lives teaching and traveling, visiting all 50 states and touring the Gala Galapagos Islands in 2017. In 2003, the professors traveled with three Ferrum College students to Malawi, Africa to set up water quality equipment and teach Malawian scientists how to use it. Recent adventures led Thomas, Pohlad, and Ferrum College Experiential term (E-term) students to distant coulocations such as the Virgin Islands and Ireland. This past summer, the cou ple road-tripped it out west in an RV and dubbed the trip “Bob and Carolyn’s Excellent Adventure.” “She was most happy in the lab, in the field or forest, on or in the water, helping students discover and learn about the amazing planet earth,” wrote Heck. “It was an honor and privilege to work with her, be mentored and taught by her, and to serve by her side in pursuit of truth, knowledge, and inspiration.”

SML Christian Academy under one roof By SHERESE GORE Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy has a new home, and itÕ s in the former Sunset Cay commercial building. Ò Miraculously, God has worked it so that, from a facility standpoint, we have moved ahead light years in just a little bit of time,Ó said Pastor Troy Keaton of EastLake Community Church. EastLake assumed the leadership of SMLCA in 2015. Ò We have all the staff and faculty, administrators, teachers and students under one roof,Ó Keaton added. Ò ... God just moved us forward so fast, and he expanded our possibilities exponentially.Ó Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy opened its doors in 2008. Before its new location, its students and staff met in two locations in two different counties. The lower school, for elementary school students, was located at Halesford Baptist Church in Wirtz. The upper school, for middle school and high school students, was located at an EastLake secondary facility in Moneta. SMLCAÕ s total enrollment stands at 252 students. Keaton said that EastLake tried to purchase the Sunset Cay commercial property in 2009 but was ultimately unsuccessful because the price was too high. In late 2018, the former owners of the building approached the church about selling the property. According to Keaton, the church held a leadership meeting, and Ò we just prayed about it.Ó Ò Over the next few days, it really began to happen,Ó he said. The approximately 20,000-square-foot new facility comprises 16 classrooms, six offices, a full kitchen, cafeteria and an assembly hall. The building is hooked to fiber optic cable and has a state-of-the-art science lab, Keaton said. The cost to renovate the property was about $960,000, and the school is still raising money to pay for the renovations. The new SMLCA facility allows room to grow and is a blessing, Keaton said. Ò Now at Smith Mountain Lake, there is a fully-accredited, state-of-the-art private academy that is affordable and open to everyone, and we look forward to it continuing to expand,Ó Keaton said.

Spring

SOUNDZ LYNCHBURG
T
he Bible says “He that hath EAR, let them HEAR.” Timothy Bratton, H.I.S has been helping that come to fruition for people for over twenty years. Now, he and his wife Veronica are looking forward to their third year in Lynchburg as the new owners of the Soundz Lynchburg location. Tim and Veronica are committed to continuing the mission of helping people hear and understand their loved ones with the best technology, for the best price, and with the best service.
Fairway Village at Westlake 13335-A Booker T. Washington Hwy. Hardy, VA 24101 Tim knows first hand the importance of your loved ones hearing and understanding you. His own mother and sister each have profound hearing loss. He spent several years with his mother smiling and pretending she heard and understood the family. This is one of the reasons he chose hearing as a profession, he wanted to help his family. Tim treats all of his patients as he would want his mother treated. Our best advertisement has been our happy patients.
After having been a Liberty University student in the late 70’s it has been a profound experience for Tim to be back in Lynchburg and seeing Jerry’s vision being fulfilled. Tim recalls the days of singing “I want that mountain” and now he gets to see the Rise of LU Athletics to FBS status.
