Energy Advise from Jeremy Montgomery, Parke County REMC’s Energy Services Specialist
Parke County REMC has been providing free home energy inspections to our members for many years now. In that time frame, I have seen some very creative ways to reduce energy costs, while also seeing things that greatly increase costs. I would like to suggest some options to reduce your energy consumption, reducing your overall energy bill. Often I see space heaters located in a garage or barn for family pets. While I am all about pet comfort, I always point out that a pet owner does not need to heat the entire space for that pet to be comfortable. A heated pet pad provides a place for your pet to find refuge from the cold with much
less energy use. A typical space heater is 1,500 watts of energy per hour of run time, while a heated pad uses much less, often saving 80-90 percent of the related expense. This year alone, I have talked to at least 20 members that are utilizing a tank heater for livestock. While I realize this is a necessity, it is still costly. One way to reduce this exposure in this situation is to use an insulated tank or a rubber tank, relocate it for easy access, but still have a wind break. In addition, depending on the number of livestock using this tank, it is very beneficial to cover half or two thirds of that tank with a solid cover. This greatly reduces the heat loss from
Jeremy Montgomery
that tank, while still providing water to the livestock. Another huge energy waste is running your hot water when it gets cold outside to keep the lines
Home and Garden 2020 • Page 3
from freezing. This turns the water heater on more often than necessary, while also making the well pump run— not to mention the water that is being wasted. I completely understand why a homeowner would do this; however, there is a permanent solution for this issue. No, it is not heat tape or a space heater in the crawlspace! A permanent, longterm solution is to insulate your foundation walls. This keeps the heat in your home to protect the water lines and other mechanical components. What to know before replacing your roof
Not only does your roof need to withstand the elements over the years, it needs to look great while doing it. If it’s time to replace your roof, experts say that there are some important things to consider, particularly when it comes to the materials you select. If you’ve started the research process, you’ve likely investigated asphalt, which is by far the most popular choice of roofing material. This is because it’s lightweight; inexpensive and fast to install, and because many people believe that asphalt will help them avoid the durability problems experienced with natural alternatives like slate and real shake. Ironically, asphalt does not always stand the test of time as one might hope. Experts point out that many homeowners are left disappointed when their decision to prioritize function over form doesn’t go as planned. “Do a search for asphalt roofing, and you may see more complaints than satisfied customers,” says Michael Cobb, general manager, DaVinci Roofscapes. “These days, not all asphalt is the same, and due to some new blends in asphalt manufacturing on the market, many roofs are failing well before their warranties.” If you’d rather not take a chance on your home roofing’s durability, and curb appeal is of importance to you, Cobb says that composite tiles can offer a cost-effective alternative to asphalt. It can also, provide a more aesthetically appealing look, stand up better to Mother Nature, and help increase the value of your home. “There’s no denying the beauty of natural slate and shake,
but that beauty can be fleeting,” says Cobb. “Natural slate is susceptible to damage caused by freeze and thaw cycles, and when it comes to natural shake, rotting, cracking and curling is inevitable.” To get the look of natural materials and have it last, take a look at durable composite roofing options on the market today. For example, the Bellaforté slate and shake tiles offered by DaVinci have a long life and are low maintenance. They resist hail, impact, decay and fire, while offering the beauty of natural roofing materials. Staggered edges, color variations and dramatic shadows of the brand’s polymer shake tiles contribute to their beauty, and mimic the appearance of natural shake. One more important thing to consider is the quality of warranty that accompanies the product you select. Before replacing your roof, be sure that your new roof is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. This can save you headaches and expenses down the line. And, check with your insurance company. A new composite roof may be able to save you on homeowner insurance premiums since it is impact- and fire-resistant. For more roofing tips, curb appeal ideas and visualizer tools, visit davinciroofscapes.com. (StatePoint) When it comes to curb appeal, the importance of a beautiful roof can’t be overstated. But a new roof should do more than appeal to the eye. It should protect your family, and the rest of your house, providing peace of mind for years to come. (StatePoint)

How to turn a simple shed into a livable oasis
Once the domain of lawnmowers and gardening tools, today’s backyard sheds are being repurposed into unique, functional spaces (think: she-shed, bunkhouse or even a bar pub) complete with plumbing and electricity. Here are tips from the experts on how to turn a simple shed into a backyard oasis. “Quite often, we are seeing that homeowners are adding electricity to backyard sheds and using decorative interior lighting to make a statement, just as lighting would be used in the interiors of a home,” says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting. Backyard sheds are widely available at garden centers, hardware and home stores in a variety of architectural styles, from traditional to modern. Sheds range in size, from small (under 80 square feet), medium (approximately 90 to 120 square feet) and large (ranging from 144 to 288 square feet.) Choose a size appropriate for the use -- for example, a gardener’s getaway or she-shed may be on the smaller size. A bunkhouse or bar shed will need to be larger. Decide whether this will be a DIY project from the ground up, or whether a prefabricated shed best meets your needs. Check with your local planning department to comply with codes and guidelines. Decide if the shed will mirror the architectural features of your home. Keep in mind that because sheds are not tall, the roof will be visible and should be considered as part of the design. When turning a backyard shed into a dream bunkhouse at
her lakeside home, designer, artist and owner of Meme Hill Studio, Amie Freling Brown put this to the test. “I’m obsessed with the tiny living concept and the she-shed movement,” says Freling Brown. “When we decided we needed more sleeping space for our 750 square foot lake house, we knew it was time to create our own tiny house.” Choosing a 10 by 12-foot classic backyard shed with a gambrel roof, gable vents, transom windows and 7-foot walls to give top campers in the bunk beds more headroom, Freling Brown transformed a simple shed into a bright, nautical farmhouse-inspired bunkhouse, complete with electricity for an overhead light, two wall lanterns and electrical outlets. The hand-painted wood grain texture of its overhead pendant inspired Freling Brown’s choice of reclaimed wood paneling for the ceiling, creating an unexpected décor detail. She added vinyl plank flooring that would stand up to sandy, wet feet from the lake. Beadboard paneled walls painted in a semi-gloss white make the most of the reflected light, adding to the small space’s open, airy feeling. As a contrast to the light palette of the bunkhouse interior, she used color in coordinating bedding, nautical decor and navy furniture, as well as accessories make it warm and inviting. For more lighting tips, trends and inspiration, visit Progress Lighting at progressltg.com/Lighting. By transforming a shed into a livable oasis, extending your home’s living space is both trendy and easy. (StatePoint)

How to declutter your child’s room to make way for play While all the gear, clothes and toys your kids possess are signs of a joyful childhood, keeping it all organized is essential for health, safety and even fun. “Too many toy choices that are unorganized can make it difficult to find a toy to play with at all,” says Keri Wilmot, pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org. “What’s more, the chaos can pose various safety hazards.” Organization is more conducive to playtime, which is why Wilmot and The Genius of Play, an initiative whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make it a critical part of raising kids, are offering eight tips to clean up the inevitable clutter: • Provide Bins: Use bins to help kids organize toys, art supplies and games, keeping size in mind -- the bigger the bin, the harder it is to locate specific toys or objects. While clear bins are great for closets by making it easy for kids to identify their contents, color-coded or decorative bins are more visually appealing options for the playroom. • Make Smart Furniture Choices: Shelving lets children see what’s available to play with, however toys that require adult assistance are best stored in closed bins inside a cabinet or closet that’s inaccessible to kids. Closed cabinets have the added benefit of reducing the appearance of clutter. Make sure to secure shelves or furniture to the wall for safety so they can’t tip over. • Rotate Toys: Rotating toys’ placement inside storage areas will remind kids of all the fun toys they have, and is an excel-

lent boredom-prevention tool. • Donate: Before holidays, birthdays or other occasions when kids are showered with gifts, talk to your child about what toys are no longer used, and give them a second life by passing them on to a neighbor or friend with a younger child or by donating them to a charitable organization. Throw away any toys that are broken, hazardous or recalled. • Use Space Wisely: While big toys like kitchens and playhouses offer up fun, they can take up a lot of playroom real estate. Opt for alternatives that can be taken down when not in use, like pop-up tents, tunnels and playhouses. • Schedule Clean-Up: Set a clean-up schedule that gives kids a role in sorting and putting items back into their correct places. Make a game of it by turning on tunes and seeing who’s the fastest. • Get Toys off the Floor: Stepping on certain toys can be painful. A child-sized table offers a stable surface for building brick structures and other creations, plus it gets small toys off the floor. • Use Walls: Maximize space and creativity by installing a whiteboard or chalkboard to use as an art surface. Walls are also a good place to store shelving for books. Parents searching for more play ideas and expert tips like these can visit TheGeniusofPlay.org or follow @GeniusofPlay on Facebook and Instagram. Decluttering play areas pays off, giving kids more opportunities to play and learn safely. (StatePoint)

How to turn your home into the ultimate staycation ‘destination’ While vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town -- and getting there – can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it: • Upgrade Bedding: Give your bedroom a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors intervene. • Create a Spa-Like Bathroom: Find your bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation -- think earthy tones, blues and greens, then add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer. • Add Backyard Touches: Show your backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book. • Explore Financing Options: When it comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility, such as the Synchrony HOME Credit Card. Using the card, you can shop for home goods at over a million home-related retail locations nationwide, earning 2 percent back on purchases under $299, or 6 months promotional financ-
ing on purchases of $299 or more everywhere the card is accepted. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longer-term promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home. Tips to amp up your home theater
Love hosting viewing parties and movie nights? Here is how to upgrade the viewing experience for you and your guests: • “Stadium” seating: When it comes to maximum visibility for all, nothing beats stadium seating. While you are unlikely able to build out levels in your living room or den, you can replicate the concept in any space by using chairs of differing heights. To create the “back row,” use stools. The next row can consist of the couch, folding chairs or other seating of standard height. Finally, create a “first row” on the floor by adding comfortable seating options such as pillows and bean bags. • Consider a projector: Whether you are on a budget or you simply want the best viewing experience, consider a home theater projector. You can get a projector and 100-inch screen for under $1,000, whereas an 80-inch TV is going to run you at least $1,500, if not much more. The LampFree projectors from Casio’s SLIM series are ideal for any home theater environment. Weighing in at five pounds, they are only 1.7 inches thick, making them the thinnest high-brightness projectors in the industry. Now in its eighth generation, the improved laser and LED hybrid light source offers a 30 percent increase in light output, in addition to an estimated 20,000 hours lifespan with minimal brightness degradation and continuous operation. Each model is fitted with a fully connectable interface, including three types of video and audio inputs, as well as HDMI,

RGB and RS-232C terminals. • Better audio: There is no better way to experience your favorite televised events than with surround sound. For easy installation and versatility, consider a wireless speaker system. • Room Selection: For crisper images, you’ll ideally create your home theater in a low-lit room. If that’s not possible, there is good news. These days, high-quality projectors can produce sharp images using intelligent light control that perceives the rooms brightness and adjusts accordingly. With a few upgrades, you can make your home theater the go-to destination for must-watch events and movie nights. (StatePoint)

How you can help protect wild birds in your yard
You may not think about it often, but wild birds use your lawn as a rest stop and place to call home. As you spruce up your lawn and garden for the season, there are simple steps you can take to protect them and help them thrive. According to Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products for homes, the following changes are easy to implement in order to create a safe harbor for wild birds: • Plant native species: Planting native species on your property is one of the most impactful ways you can improve your local environment, as well as make your lawn and garden a healthy habitat for wild birds and other fauna. Native plant species provide birds with food and places to rest and nest. Birds in turn, spread pollen and seeds, while acting as a natural pesticide. Speaking of which, gardening organically will also go a long way to protecting the health and safety of feeding birds. • Make windows visible: Up to 1 billion birds die annually from striking windows in US, according to the American Bird Conservancy. The good news is that it’s

relatively easy and affordable to prevent your home from being part of the problem. Special window decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight, a wavelength of light noticeable to birds, have been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Giving the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass but glowing like a stoplight for birds, those from WindowAlert feature a range of decorative patterns. To boost protection for birds, you can also apply a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid in between decals. More information, as well as useful application tips, can be found by visiting windowalert.com. • Monitor cats: Monitor your cat’s time outdoors to ensure they are not terrorizing or hunting birds. An enclosed play area for your cat is the most effective way to keep birds in your yard safe from your furry companion’s natural instincts. Good deeds start at home. This season, do your part to help migrating bird populations reach their destinations safely. (StatePoint)

Taking a top down approach to home exterior updates Whether you want to boost the beauty of your home for your own enjoyment or you’re looking to sell in the near future, experts recommend taking a top-down approach to evaluate the outside of your home. “When making updates to your home exterior, it’s helpful to think of how all the parts of the whole work together to create a unified look,” says Kate Smith, chief color maven with Sensational Color. With that in mind, here are a few remodeling ideas to get you started: The Roof A new roof not only adds aesthetic appeal, it can add value too. Indeed, Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value 2020 report shows that a roof replacement can have a return-on-investment of over 60 percent. Composite roofing is particularly durable, long-lasting and low-maintenance, and an all-around smart investment. Not only does a high-quality roof help home-sellers get foot traffic, but the low-maintenance aspect really resonates with house-hunters. An attractive, more affordable alternative to the real thing, the composite slate and shake roofing options available from manufacturers like DaVinci Roofscapes, for example, reduce pesky maintenance concerns, offering impact-, fire- and wind-resistance, as well as the peace of mind that comes with a strong warranty. This is also a good choice for both those with a clear color palette in mind, and those who might need some direction, as free resources on the DaVinci Roofscapes site include a Color Visualizer offering users the ability to see how different colors may look on their home exteriors, as well as a variety of free e-books with project inspiration and advice. To learn more, visit www.davinciroofscapes.com. “Using these free color tools can be both fun and empowering,” says Smith. “They take the guesswork out of crafting a pleasing exterior color palette for the home and help create increased curb appeal.” Siding If your home sports traditional siding, you may have noticed that the tiles contract and expand in fluctuating weather conditions and temperatures. What’s more, the
color of these often-times thin and flimsy materials can fade quickly. Rather than replacing siding with more of the same, consider composite siding built to resist impact, fire, mold, algae, insects, salt air and high winds. The hand-split shake siding available from DaVinci Roofscapes is made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers, plus a highly-specialized fire retardant. Whether you add accent panels with composite siding or go for the whole house, this can add a hassle-free aesthetic benefit to your home and boost its value. Walkways Cracked or uneven walkways and steps are not only an eyesore, they can present a tripping hazard to you and guests. Evaluate whether it’s time to give yours an overhaul. Be sure to select low-maintenance materials that complement the look of the other elements of your exterior. This is a good time to consider lighting that adds drama to the walkway at night and makes for safer walking. Sprucing up? Go for high-impact projects that boost curb appeal and add value to the home. (StatePoint)

On rainy days, it can be tempting to hand children devices and let them fall down a YouTube rabbit hole. After all, there can be a lot of hours to fill when the weather isn’t cooperating with your weekend plans. There are better ways to spend those rainy days. With a little creativity, rainy days can be opportunities for fun and educational play. Consider these great ideas from The Genius of Play, an initiative with a mission of raising awareness about the importance of play in order to help parents make it a critical part of raising kids. • Get messy: Just because you’re indoors, doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity for kids to satisfy their primal urge to get their hands dirty. Many such items are now designed to reduce messiness, stickiness and clean up hassles. • Play games: Break out some classic board games like checkers and dominoes or grab a deck of cards for a round of crazy eights. Such games teach the importance of taking turns and good sportsmanship and can even help kids learn to strategize and plan ahead. • Get dramatic: For an afternoon of open-ended playtime, encourage kids to develop their emotional, creative nication, creative, cognitive, social, emotional and physical and communication skills by developing their own skit skills. Home interior updates you can make to create a wow factor Whether you want to customize and enhance your living spaces for your own enjoyment or you need to prepare to stand out in a buyer’s market, creating that wow factor is easy to achieve, if you know where to focus your attention. You’re likely already familiar with the importance of exterior curb appeal. According to experienced realtors, it’s just as important to continue that concept after walking through the front door. “As the saying goes, ‘you only have one opportunity to make a first impression,’” says realtor Vincent A. Stanson, a REALTOR associate with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “When that front door opens, homeowners have the chance to impress their guests with a stunning stairway system, stand-out mouldings and decorative interior accents.” To get you started, here are easy ideas to give your spaces that wow factor you see and admire in ads and architectural magazines: Ceiling-to-Floor Transformation Totally transform a room top to bottom with decorative mouldings and millwork, starting with the ceiling. Add warmth with wood beams in a horizontal or criss-cross pattern, or simply accent the ceiling with stand-out crown mouldings.

Step Up Stairways Often a focal point of a home interior, a stairway system is a crucial area where homeowners can step up their game, and doing so doesn’t have to be overwhelming. “There’s a definite trend underway of people mixing metals and woods on stair systems and throughout the home,” says Kelly Miller, director of market development for L.J. Four tips for higher-quality sleep
Sleep is essential to good health. Unfortunately, over a third of Americans are not getting enough sleep, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over time, sleep deprivation can take a toll on one’s overall wellness. “Like air, water and food, sleep is like fuel for your body,” says Dr. Janet Kennedy, sleep specialist at Leesa, a mattress company on a mission to help consumers get better sleep. Do you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep? If you’re feeling more wired than tired at bedtime, it may be time to improve your sleep routine. Check out Dr. Kennedy’s suggestions for a better night’s rest: • Cool down: If your first quiet moment to relax comes when you get into bed, your mind will race to try to get all its thinking done. Shut down phones and other devices at least one hour before bed and set an even earlier cutoff time for work. Much the way the body needs a cooldown period after exercise, your mind needs a cooldown period to process the day and unwind before transitioning into sleep mode. • Make a routine: Bedtime routines are important, but they don’t have to be elaborate. It helps to create a series of steps to be done in a consistent order. This could include stretching, breathing exercises or journaling. “I recommend keeping it simple and ending by reading fiction,” says Dr. Kennedy. “Reading is one of the most powerful sleep associations I have found. It gives the mind a place to go while the body settles down and tells you when

it’s ready to sleep.” • Create a sanctuary: Your bed should be a place you feel lucky to be. That means setting it up for ultimate comfort. No matter what type sleeper you are, your pillows and mattress should properly support and align the neck and spine so your body will relax quickly, instead of struggling to find a comfortable sleeping position. Temperature control is also important for drifting into sleep. Pillows and bedding should stay cool through the night. Look for a mattress designed to offer superior support as well as breathability and temperature regulation, such as those from Leesa. The brand also offers hybrid pillows made with fibers featuring a ventilated gel comfort layer. Customizable, they are designed to keep sleepers cool and comfortable. • Don’t struggle: If you aren’t falling asleep as quickly as you want, or if you are struggling with insomnia, stop trying to fall asleep. The body knows how to sleep and will sleep when it’s ready. Wait until you are very sleepy before going to bed and then read, listen to an audio book, or do something quiet to distract your mind until sleep comes to you. More resources about sleep are available at www.leesa. com. Sleep is meant to restore the mind and body, not cause stress, so if you’re having trouble getting enough of it, it may be time to tweak your nighttime routine. (StatePoint)

Dinner party menu ideas for the grill
Wow your friends and family by using a wood pellet grill and smoker to create every dish on your dinner party menu. With these tips and recipes from the chefs at Louisiana Grills, you can craft festive gourmet dishes infused with sophisticated hardwood flavor. Appetizer Course Smoked cheese is a savory delicacy that offers a delicious flavor profile when served alongside crackers or bread. Unfortunately, the “smoked” flavor of store-bought cheese typically only comes from liquid smoke. With a cold smoking cabinet on your wood pellet grill, smoking cheese the old-fashioned and authentic way is uncomplicated, particularly when using one from Louisiana Grills, as it produces layers of delicate flavor by circulating cool smoke around the cheese, and eliminating the need for rotation. Cold Smoking Cheese Tips: • Let it reach room temperature before smoking. • Keep the temperature inside the cabinet below 90 degrees F. • Smoke outside in cooler temps for two to four hours • Wrap well and let rest refrigerated for at least 24 hours Main Course Purchasing high-quality meat can make a significant difference in the overall flavor of your dish, so be sure to select locally-raised, grass-fed meat. Livestock raised on grass-fed farms have lower amounts of lactic acid in their muscles,

Ingredients: • 1 pound pork tenderloin • 1 Tablespoon olive oil • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground pepper • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 6 ounces thinly sliced bacon • 1/2 fresh blackberries, washed and dried • 1/4 cup seedless blackberry preserves • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard Instructions: • Pierce the pork tenderloin all over with a fork and rub with olive oil until fully coated. Season well with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Then, wrap in bacon and let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. • Next, puree the fresh blackberries in a blender and strain into a saucepan. Tips for hosting houseguests
Hosting houseguests? For happier guests and hosts alike, you’ll want to be sure you’re equipped to accommodate all your overnighters. Here are a few pointers: Special Considerations You’ll likely know of any special considerations you will need to make for individual guests, but if you aren’t sure, ask in advance. For older guests, be sure the floor is free of tripping hazards and that walkways are well-lit. For families, offer a room away from noise so small children can sleep undisturbed at their regular bedtimes. Anticipating and accommodating allergies, dietary restrictions and mobility issues can help keep guests healthy, happy and safe during their stay with you. Better Bedding Whether you are hosting one guest or many, it’s important to ensure that everyone under your roof has a comfortable place to sleep. Thanks to the latest updates in air mattress technology, that’s easier
than ever these days. Before the holidays, get equipped with compact, high-quality air mattresses -- which are a must-have for travelers who need to pack a car compactly, as well as hosts who want to store guest bedding between uses. One such option is the Intex PremAire ThermaLux airbed with Fiber-Tech interior construction, which inflates in 4-5 minutes. Made from a Microcell contour top designed to insulate in cold weather and absorb moisture on warm nights, it even contains a USB port for charging and built-in storage for cords and small personal items. Other models from Intex
-- which come in various sizes and supports -- offer such luxuries as headboards, raised bed heights and plush air pillowtop systems. A Stocked Bathroom Not only will a well-stocked bathroom help avoid last-minute trips to the store, it will make guests feel comfortable and welcome upon arrival. You’ll always want to provide a set of linens for each guest, as well as shampoo, conditioner and soap. Having a few additional items on hand -- disposable razors, cotton swabs, combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste -- is a nice touch. For many reasons, guests often arrive without certain essentials. Maybe they forgot an item at home. Maybe TSA made them toss something in the trash. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to prepare for this common occurrence. A full house does not need to be overwhelming. With a few considerations, you can create a joyful experience for you and your houseguests. (StatePoint)
Septic system maintenance is not complicated, and does not have to be expensive. Upkeep comes down to four key elements: • Inspect and pump frequently • Use water efficiently • Properly dispose of waste • Maintain your drainfield Inspect and pump frequently
The average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with electrical float switches, pumps or mechanical components should be inspected more often, generally once a year.
A service contract is important since alternative systems have mechanized parts. Four major factors influence the frequency of septic pumping: • Household size • Total wastewater generated • Volume of solids in wastewater • Septic tank size

Should I be worried about that condensation on my windows? If you take a look at your home’s windows and doors in winter, you may notice condensation. As temperatures drop, it often appears on the inside and outside of these surfaces. Here’s what you need to know about why condensation occurs, when it matters and what you can do about it: Interior Condensation When the heat is on inside the home in wintertime, a certain amount of humidity feels good -- we breathe easier, our skin is less dry and there’s less static in the air. This is fine usually, but when temperatures outside get extremely low, problems can arise. Under these circumstances, humidity can generate condensation on your windows -- whether they’re old or new -- and this should be managed. While there’s no problem with condensation on the window glass itself, (except for the fact that visibility can be obscured) that condensation could affect wood trim around the windows and lead to mold and rot. Perhaps even worse, it could be an indicator that condensation is also occurring within your walls, which can lead to unhealthy mold. Unfortunately, the most common sources of home humidity are everyday parts of life, including showers, cooking, doing laundry and even fish tanks. However, if you see condensation on your windows there are two actions that experts recommend. One, if you have a humidifier, turn it down. The second, use a dehumidifier. Exterior Condensation Exterior condensation occurs when the dew point temperature approaches the outside air temperature. When the air is saturated and can’t hold any more moisture, water vapor forms droplets on surfaces -- including your roof, siding, windows and doors. If you have energy-efficient windows, you may notice exterior condensation occur more than you did when you had older, less energy-efficient windows that allowed warmth from inside the home to reach the outside glass pane and dissipate the condensation. Unlike with interior condensation, there’s nothing to worry about in the case of exterior condensation. Moisture on the outside pane of glass is normal and a good sign that your windows are functioning correctly to prevent warmth from reaching the outside glass. The condensation will dissipate when the outside air temperature rises. Next Steps If there’s no condensation on the exterior of your windows but there’s moisture on adjacent exterior surfaces, this would be a good indicator that it’s time for new windows. Also, if you get constant internal condensation on your windows in very cold weather and your humidity is low, then upgrading to a more thermally efficient window would be a good idea. Look for high-performing replacement windows with the latest technological advances that offer maximum efficiency and comfort. Third-party recognition for a particular brand or product is a strong indicator that you’re investing in a quality product. A recent “Remodeling” magazine survey of remodeling contractors ranked ProVia vinyl
windows as number one in window quality in part because of their features that are tested against the most stringent requirements for air and water infiltration. This winter, pay attention to your home windows, glass doors and other surfaces. Understanding the ins and outs of interior and exterior condensation can help you address potential issues. How to troubleshoot your technology issues
If you’re like most people, you’ve spent more time than you’re willing to admit troubleshooting a technology issue with any one of the many devices in your connected home. Did you know that the average person owns at least 10 connected devices from Macs and PCs, smartphones, tablets and printers, to voice assistants, video doorbells and even home automation systems? As homes get “smarter” with more connected devices, more complex problems arise, including issues with setup, troubleshooting and syncing devices. Calling the manufacturer or going to the store where you bought the device could help, if it’s still under warranty. Trying to diagnose and solve the problem yourself might work, if you have time, patience and some knowhow. But what many people really need is an IT expert on-call, ready to solve all their personal tech issues… but how realistic or affordable is that? “Subscribing to a technical support plan is actually an increasingly popular option for consumers who want to keep their tech working 24/7. Many plans
provide a professional, remote, ‘IT team’ available anytime you run into trouble. This can help keep costs low since the team resolves your tech issues by phone, chat or by virtually remoting into your device,” says Renée Soulliard, of Support. com. Googling “tech support” brings up numerous options that promise to solve your various tech problems. With so many options, how do you know which ones are reliable? Fraudulent tech support companies continue to get more sophisticated and difficult to detect, warns Soulliard. “To find a trusted tech

support provider, choose one with a long history and highly trained, professional tech support agents,” she says. Here are some potential questions to ask while evaluating tech support providers: • How long has the company been in business? • Are the company and its agents US-based? • Is there a limit to how many devices are covered? Are there any restrictions on the types of devices, brands or problems covered? • What operating systems are covered? • Is the support provided unlimited? Is support available 24/7? • Are there monthly plans available or just annual plans? Are there set-up fees? • Are there any guarantees if my issue can’t be resolved? Can I cancel any time? • Do I have access to support via phone and chat? Is online self-support available? • Can I schedule a time

to have a tech support agent contact me? • What do other customers say about the service? Look for an affordable monthly or annual subscription plan that offers unlimited tech support for any issue with your connected devices, regardless of the type of device, brand, or where you bought it. Plans can cost as low as $10 per month with no long-term commitment. Find tech support providers with US-based support agents that offer a range of support options, including phone, chat, or video-based “virtual house calls.” You could even try the free self-support tools from Support.com’s TechSolutions or, if you need more help, learn more about their tech support plans at www.support. com. Having a tech support plan with a highly qualified tech support provider is an efficient and smart way to manage and maintain your technology, and can help you get the most out of all your home tech. Five important financial decisions: should you DIY or hire a pro? Financial decisions can have a big impact on your future and the future of your loved ones. Good financial decisions you make on your own can save thousands of dollars, but according to experts, there are some decisions that may be better left to the professionals. 1. Do your taxes. There is no one-size-fits-all answer but if you don’t have dependents or investments, don’t own a business, and have the time and patience, you may be able to file a simple tax form on your own fairly easily. As you gain significant income and your financial situation becomes more complex, a pro might be helpful. 2. Buy or sell a house. Weigh the pros and cons to determine the best plan. Choosing the “For Sale by Owner” route lets you avoid paying a commission to real
estate agents, which averages 5 to 6% of the home’s sale price. On the other hand, your house may get less traffic compared to what it would receive if it were included in professional listing platforms. You’d also need to be prepared to handle all the paperwork, organize open houses and screen potential buyers yourself.

3. Purchase life insurance. Life is always changing, and it’s important to make sure your coverage is keeping up so that your loved ones are protected in the event that something happens to you. Because life insurance is so critical, companies like Erie Insurance recommend always working with a pro instead of going the DIY route. For example, term life insurance provides coverage for a specific number of years, while a whole life policy is designed to last a lifetime. But which type is best for you -- and how much you actually need to protect your family -- is something your trusted insurance agent can help you determine. In addition, studies show that people often overestimate the cost of life insurance, sometimes assuming it costs as much as three times more than it does. In addition to being surprised at how affordable it is, you also might be surprised at how quick and easy it is to get a quote. 4. Create a retirement savings plan. The right advisor can help you figure out a monthly amount of money to set aside in a 401(k) or Roth IRA and choose the right investments to reach
Home and Garden 2020 • Page 18
your long-term goals. If you want to DIY, there are free calculators available online that use your savings and spending habits to look at your financial situation. The federal government also offers a calculator to estimate your social security benefits. 5. Write a will. This is an area where many experts say it may be advisable to hire a pro. Estate-planning software can be generic, as it considers compliance across the country instead of state-specific laws. It’s important to use the correct legal language in a will and be knowledgeable about estate and inheritance taxes when leaving behind property. As part of estate planning, you may want to consider addressing whom you’d want to care for your minor children in the event of your passing. Federal regulations prevent minors from legally owning property, but they can be beneficiaries. Determine whether you have the right skill set and time to take on these five important financial decisions. Doing it yourself can save money but the longterm result could be costly. (StatePoint)
Decorating with table lamps: the five best tips for 2020 Many people underestimate the power of lighting to set the mood and introduce different design elements into their home’s interiors. As a result, they often make the mistake of relying solely only overhead fixtures to light their homes. To get that cozy, homey feel, be sure to incorporate table lamps into your design scheme using these tips and trends from Eyely.com: • Use color: Table lamps can be a good way to add bold pops of color or complement the existing palette. Think about whether you want each lamp to act as focal point or to quietly blend in. • Consider size: Make sure that what you’re buying is actually meant to sit atop a table. Table lamps should be between 24 and 31-inches high and at eye level when you’re sitting next to them. This comes in handy if you’re using the lamp as a reading light. Those on the shorter end of the range are ideal for bedrooms, whereas taller lamps work best in living rooms and other spaces You’ll also need to note the size of the base -- if it’s too wide, it may not leave room on the table for books, coasters and decorative pieces. • Think purpose: There are many different types of lampshades and each offers its own benefits. An opaque or dark shade is good for minimizing glare if you’re watching TV. A less opaque shade will provide more light and give off a warm glow. • Pair up: Table lamps usually look best in pairs. If you have a long table, you can place a lamp on either end and

then, place additional decorations in the center of the table, or, use matching end tables on either side of a sofa to accommodate your twin lamps. • Define Your Space: Do you decorate around a theme such as farmhouse or mid-century design? Lighting can help you define the look. For example, if you’re a bohemian type who prefers a minimalist style, shop for fixtures with an eclectic design and clean, simple lines. For mid-century modern rooms, look for clean lines and vintage-inspired finishes. Mixing rustic and modern finishes can add a modern edge to a traditional space. To get you started, consider these recommendations from Eyely.com: To simultaneously harken the past and beckon the future, consider the Alani 34-inch Metal LED Table Lamp, which is evocative of 1960s futuristic space race-inspired design but plated in a modern brass, finish. Flank a table, sofa, or adorn bedside tables with a set of two, such as these Max 27-inch Glass Triple-Sphere LED Table Lamps. Glass blown into a trio of orbs, the look is completed with a matching finial and linen drum shade. Whether adding a conversation-worthy lighting feature to an otherwise serious room, or completing a menagerie of animal-inspired decor items, the blue and white owl-shaped Kai 16-inch Ceramic Mini LED Table Lamp will give your home a touch of chinoiserie and woodland whimsy.
