history
his issue of Boonville View is different. We don’t have the kind of stories you’re used to reading here. With social distancing guidelines, it is impossible to go talk to people and take photos. Businesses are closed and people are staying at home. Events are canceled or postponed. The places you pick up your copy of Boonville View are probably closed. Even what I do write here could be completely wrong by the time the magazine is printed and distributed. We understand the struggle because we are just like you. Our office is located in the 1901 Emporium, which has been closed for weeks. Everything changes so fast. It’s kind of a mixed blessing, I guess. I’ve been in kind of a funk. It’s hard to stay home. I do - as much as I can - because I undersand the dangers to those around me. My funk can also be attributed to the fact that I have a daughter who is a senior this year. We know how much these kids are sacrificing for the greater good, so we’ve dedicated a large portion of this issue to them. You’ll read their senior quotes and advice to their junior counterparts. You’ll read their take on this situation and how they’re coping. Class of 2020 - we see you. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s bad. You’re getting your recognition. You’ll also read some history, some funnies and see what the rest of our are doing to stay safe and sane during these uncertain times. Believe it or not, we will want to look back on these times some day. We are living through history. This will be something we can tell the next generation - and hope they learn from it. As for us, we’ve been trying to stay creative and as busy as possible. We painted a crazy wall on our patio. We threw a drive-by 15th birthday party for my younger daughter. We’ve made random crafts and laughed so much. Please, stay home for as long as is requested of you. I know it’s hard. I know it’s annoying. But, the longer you resist, the longer we’ll have to do it. This is for the greater good.

y life will forever be divided into two categories – BC, or before Coronavirus, and AC, after Coronavirus. I mean no disrespect to the religious community that certainly reveres history as either AD or BC, but on March 13, a Friday no less, my life, and that of my family, changed forever. My life BC seemingly was everything I wanted. Our newly opened venue Funxion Events was starting to gain momentum; bookings for weddings, bridal showers, birthday parties, and graduation celebrations were starting to pour in. The tickets for our Mommy & Me Tea were selling fast. On top of that, we were constantly hopping from activity to activity. My daughter had ballet at Children’s Center for Dance Education two to three times a week. My son had just begun karate. My husband served on two boards that met at least twice a month. And I was on the Boonville Parks Board; while not a huge commitment, we were a busy family. While working basically full time to get the business off the ground, I also was subbing full time in the Title I program at Oakdale Elementary School. We needed the supplemental income, and my kids enjoyed seeing me in the hallways and sometimes in their classrooms. There had been some chatter of schools shutting down due to Covid-19, but none of us expected it would happen so quickly. That Friday the 13th, one week before the Warrick County School Corporation was set to close for spring break, the superintendent made the difficult decision to close and shift to virtual learning for three weeks. I went from being a substitute teacher to a homeschooling mom. Seeing the writing on the wall, the teachers – those amazing souls who deserve a pay raise and much, much more respect – compiled packets for each of the students to take home. Those three weeks would turn into virtual

learning for the remainder of the school year. Our kids’ kindergarten and second grade years were cut short. Not much later, Indiana also made the decision to restrict events. What started as a mandate limiting group gatherings to 10 people or less quickly turned into a shelter-in-place order, meaning my “nonessential” event space also was closed. Rightfully so, potential clients all but stopped reaching out. One of my March weddings had to be postponed. Of the inquiries that did come in, I could only conduct virtual tours to show the space. Luckily, I had some great clients that nonetheless made payments on their rental to help keep us going. So what’s a woman with a to do with no supplemental job, a new business that has little income but mounting bills, and two kiddos who love each other but bicker nonstop? Turn to Facebook, of course. Combining my journalism degree and my use of sarcasm to combat stress, I started to document what seemed to be my real-life Groundhog Day-ja-vu. March 17 - Day 2 of quarantine: Helped kiddos with a little bit of homework. Picked up lunch at Oakdale. Cleaned the kitchen while also doing squats in the kitchen with the kids on my back. They loved it and therefore I will also get in some exercise during this craziness. Baked chocolate chip cookies. Got the kids and dogs outside. Biggest concern thus far - drink the wine now or

Indeed, it was good. March 22 - Everybody’s at home cooking more and sewing masks. Just goes to show how much more valuable standardized testing is than home economics. (Edited to add note to elected officials: Stop the madness.) March 25 - Quarantine day #Ihavenoideanymore. My children won’t stop arguing. I’m tired of being a referee. I’m tired and slowly losing my mind. March 30 - Today was a good day. Kids did work all morning and even played well together. I cleaned, did laundry, and helped with homework. March 31 - My children have zero sense of personal space. One of them must be touching me at all times. Currently one is sitting on me to work on Exact Path while I help the other with math. If
the 3 of us morph into one person, this is how it all started. April 1 - The silver lining of all of this mess has been that it has made me slow down and really take inventory of what is important in my life. My body needed a rest, and my family needed more of me. While we don’t have a traditional front porch, I will forever be grateful for these photos that Rachel Biggs of Plum Portraits took for her Front Porch Sessions. Also April 1 – I posted a video to Facebook of my children reading a fake press release that Gov. Holcomb would require all kids to repeat their current grade level the following school year. One child was excited, while the other, not so much. They spent the next 48 hours playing “April Fools” pranks on anyone and everyone. April 5 - If you want to know how things are going, tomorrow I’m going to start running again. Voluntarily. Without someone chasing me. I’ve eaten so much food and I don’t own a work-

April 8 – Missing social interaction, my friends and I turn to technology. Me and three of my closest girlfriends played an online version of Cards Against Humanity while also in a Zoom session. It was the best two hours of laughter, inappropriate jokes, and wine I’ve had in a very long time. April 11 - Someone make me stop eating sugar! schedules of her five young children. While I was interviewing her for this feature story, she shared with me that, “She sometimes wondered if she did enough for the children while she was so involved in getting her own educational pursuits fulfilled.” Even though she and the children’s father would later divorce, she credits him now as “being very supportive when she was studying law.” “I went to night school from 5:30 to 8 p.m., five nights a week,” she said. “Sometimes I made dinner before I left and Gene would come home after working all day and feed the children and put them to bed.” At the time, the children were 1, 3, 5 and 7. Her fifth child was born in 1965 after she graduated in January that same year with honors. In the beginning, it was a big disappointment to find that women lawyers were not being sought after. Her big hopes for a job interview in Indianapolis fell through. Lucky for both her and her beloved older brother, Burley Scales, he had just been appointed as the Warrick County Prosecutor. One of his first orders of business was to appoint her as his Deputy. After serving in the capacities of Deputy Prosecutor in Spencer County, Warrick County Park Board attorney, Town of Tennyson Attorney and Boonville City Judge, from 1965 through 1969, she worked in private law practice with her brother. daughter as she graduates high school
Chloe May is a member of the Boonville High School Class of 2020. She was a four-year member of Chamber Choir and a four-year member of the softball team. In addition to high school softball, she also plays on the Southern Indiana Stealers travel team. She will attend Kankakee Community College (located an hour and a half south of Chicago) in the fall to further both her academic and athletic careers. She plans to be a high school English teacher.

ear Chloe, You were born just 10 months after one of the biggest tragedies in modern history. I’m glad you weren’t alive for it, even though you are probably alive because of it. The world changed that day. When you were less than a year old, we went to war. At 3, we were reeling from a massive hurricane that decimated New Orleans. Then there was a tornado that ripped through our community. Now, you graduate in a pandemic that has literally shut the country down. I know it’s affected you. I know you’ve tried to suck it up and deal, but I see it all over your face. You’re disappointed. You have every right to be. You’ve always asked questions about the world around you. You’ve come to me almost in tears at injustices. You’ve been vocal about reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. You’ve rallied against drunk driving after you lost a friend to a drunk driver. In your 17 years, you’ve had your share of struggles and failures. But, you’ve always been able to turn those into successes. You almost failed third
grade, then came back with a 4.0 your entire junior year. In August, you’ll move four hours away and begin your true journey into adulthood. It’s going to be hard (for both of us), but I know you’ll shine. Your whole life, the world would change around you, and you’d roll with it and learn from it. Your next chapter will have it’s share of trials. Stay true to yourself. This was your time. You were looking forward to walking though Chandler Elementary in your cap and gown. You were excited for your senior softball season and your senior night. You missed out on that last day of school, the one where you can see your future in front of you and you’re a mix of terrified, excited and proud. It’s not as easy to roll with this change, but you’re still managing. Words cannot begin to express how proud we all are of you. It doesn’t matter when you walk across that stage, you will. Just remember that you’re still my little girl. You did it, baby! I love you!

Words of
wisdom
To honor their seniors, Tecumseh High School Principal Jason Fischer and Yearbook Advisor Samantha Ripple have provided us with a selection of the Class of 2020’s advice to the junior class and the class list.
Take things one day at a time, and don’t panic over what you have no control over.
Make a difference. Don’t be like everyone else.
Make the most out of your senior year, and don’t wish it away!
Enjoy it, it goes by fast.
WASH YOUR HANDS!!!
Don’t think that you have time to do things. Time flies fast, and it’s not waiting for you to catch up.
Never take one single minute for granted. You never know what someone is going through, so if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything.
Apply for as many scholarships as possible, you won’t regret it. Have fun, no matter the circumstances.

T
his isn’t our first go-around with a massive pandemic. It’s probably the first any of us remember, though. The following articles are taken verbatim out of the Boonville Standard in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic — which was actually an H1N1 strain of influenza. According to the CDC, the outbreak began in Kansas in March of 1918, just one month after the United States joined WWI. The first real wave of the flu hit in September of that year. The CDC estimates that 195,000 Americans were killed by the virus in October 1918 alone. That led to shortages of nurses, especially with many being sent overseas to aid the troops in their fight. WWI ended in November 1918. With returning soldiers, a second resurgence of the virus hit the U.S. Public offihealth offi cials began programs educating the public of the dangers of coughing and sneez sneezing. their opening and closing hours to prevent close contact with each other. People were asked to walk to work instead of relying on public transportation in an effort to keep people from being exposed. It was the earliest instance of social distancing. A third wave occurs in the first days of 1919. San Francisco reported 101 deaths in just five days When it was over, an estimated 500 million people — one third of the world’s population — became infected with the virus. Scientists still don’t fully understand what made the pandemic so devastating, but have said that the fact that they had no vaccine and no antibiotics to treat secondary infections could play into the death toll. Control efforts were limited to “isolation, quarantine, good

If the public will cooperate no further suspension of business will be thought necessary. The doctors are urgently requested to file their daily reports. Some are very negligent in this matter and in order to keep an accurate count this must be done. Dr. W. W. Rhudy The ‘Flu’ The rumor is about town that there are a thousand cases of influenza in Boonville. When asked to make a statement about it, F. M. Lindley, the newly-appointed deputy health officer, said last night that while he was not prepared to state the exact number of cases, he was of the opinion that there were less than three hundred cases in town. “One hundred and sixty-seven cases were officially reported and recorded the last ten days,” he said, “and while there is no doubt that there are many cases unattended by physicians, and so not reported, I fell sure that the number given is high enough. I do not pretend to say that this is better or worse than in the past, but merely give the figure as based on reports handed in.” The number of new cases reported in the health office for Dec. 2, 3 and 4, respectively were 22, 14 and 8. A committee of business men waited on the different physicians yesterday and asked their opinion of the situation. The concensus of opinion gathered during the interviews is that the situation is better than it was a week ago, both in number and severity of cases. ATTENTION:
We have waited until there is less than a month left before the annual car show. Almost every public gathering event we know of is being cancelled or postponed - The Kentucky Derby, The Indianapolis 500, The W.C. Handy Blues Fest in Henderson. We are quite simply facing a national crisis the likes of which none of us has ever seen. We must obey the governorĘźs quarantine order. So, with a heavy heart, and after much of the preparation work has already been completed, we need to wait until next year to put on the 4th annual car show here in Boonville. The new date for the next show is Saturday, May 15, 2021.

KNOWING THEIR WORTH By Colleen Talley
ith the coronavirus on everyone’s mind, some have probably wondered, “How am I going to be able to vote in the primary?” Hopefully many of you called the county clerk’s office to ask for a mail-in ballot. The museum thought it would be a good reminder in these difficult times that voting has not always been a right for everyone, especially women. It took 70 difficult years of trying in Indiana to finally secure the right to vote, and it wasn’t pretty. The 19th Amendment ratified 100 years ago finally allowed white women to vote; it would take another decade before women of color got the same rights. The museum has a display commemorating that historic election and the lengths women went to in order to be able to write their names in the 1920 pink voter registration books. Reluctant to allow the sexes to mix even in the registration books, men used separate manila colored ones that year. In later elections in the 1920s, the pink books were abandoned so everyone signed in together. Visitors, when the museum opens, may look through these books to see if they can find the names of their grandmothers or great-grandmothers

if they lived any community in Warrick County in 1920. A woman voter had to give her name, address, age and state where they were born. One of the oldest ladies to vote was 91-year-old Ann Kugler of R. R. 5, Boonville who was born in Nashville, Tenn. Of course, there were many 21-year-olds who came to vote, including Edith Hargrave and her 50-year-old mother, Cora L. Hargrave, both of 316 E. Sycamore Street in Boonville. Many women voted that year. It must have been quite the occasion. Also featured in the exhibit is a tribute to Mrs. Ida R. Wilson of Boonville, southern Indiana’s first woman state legislator. A Republican elected in the 1940s, she represented her constituents in Vanderburgh, Posey and Warrick ably and honorably. She was instrumental in establishing the county library system in Indiana and introduced school consolidation laws to enlarge schools and improve curriculum. She was a ranking member of the Education Committee and
was instrumental in obtaining legislation for the teachers retirement fund, salary raises and school benefits. Among other items on display are photos of suffragettes in their trademark white dresses and hats in various parades from the turn of the last century advocating their voting rights cause. Also on display are two costumes, one a typical white dress and yellow voting sash of the 1900 to 1920 period, as well as a black skirt and bodice more typical of the attire of women who worked for the vote in the 1850 to 1880 era. Newspaper articles, an American flag of the period, and other items round out the exhibit. If the coronavirus abates and the museum is allowed to be open in May or June, we hope you will stop by to see this most important exhibit. Check our Facebook page and new website for more information about the museum and future events. We will get through this together as our grandmothers did before us as they set out to change the culture of a nation.

On March 20, Debi, JanAnn, Patti Clutter, Donna Hook, Peggy Smith, Emily May, Linda Evans and Calle May went around and placed hearts - made by Dan Phillips of Phillips Signs - on the windows of nursing home residents to show that they’re not forgotten. Sincerely, I
The Class of 2
shouldn’t have the time to write this, but I do. My senior year has been ripped out of my hands. I have been working towards these few events for 12 years - my senior softball season, senior night, senior prom and graduation. I feel terrible for myself as well as all other seniors. This is a story we will all tell our kids, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. Sure, our parents told us the stories of “having to walk five miles uphill to school both ways.” Our story, however, is true - about how all 12 years of working towards one common goal was taken away from us. I’m sure that for some students, this is heaven. But for some of us, this is the opposite. I have never wanted to be at school more than I do right now. My first softball game would have been Tuesday, March 31, but our season was officially cancelled on April, 2. I’ve been playing fastpitch softball for 8 years. I’ve spent the last three and a half years practicing and playing with the Southern Indiana Stealers and Boonville High School. I’ll never get my real senior night. I won’t see my teammates on that high school field that last time. No chance at state my senior year. No chance at winning games with my team and celebrating. Although I am missing these things, I still have my last summer with my travel team, the Southern Indiana Stealers. I’ve been on this team for seven and a half years. I also have signed to play softball for Kankakee Community College, so I have that to look forward to. I get a whole new set of teammates, roommates, and friends. I’m moving out of my house for the first time, which is both exciting and terrifying. I also lost my final choir performances. I didn’t get my final shot at gold with distinction at ISSMA,
Chloe May and Madison Overton, the only two seniors on the BHS softball team. final spring concert, or senior song. I don’t get to have my last song with all the other seniors. With my best friends. These are people that I’ve been singing with since seventh grade, and this was the final moment we all looked forward to spending with each other before graduation. Now everything we have been working for, every song we’ve sang, means nothing. We lost one of our classmates December 17, 2016. Skylar Robinson-Williamson was an amazing

person. She was so kind to everyone, so supportive and sweet. We were all trying to make it through high school and everything we have to get through, for her. We were in choir together seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, until she passed. We all perform for her, just as we did at her funeral. I understand that this is a very dire situation and there is more at stake than missing a few ceremonies. There are people fighting for their lives. However, this is my time to grieve what I have lost. I’ve seen reports that colleges are considering closing until 2021, which worries me about both my college career and softball career. Though this does seem like it has been all bad, there is good in everything. As of now I’m supposed to move out of my childhood home by August 12. I’ve lived in the same house my entire life, so many of my childhood memories happened in this house. This quarantine has given me borrowed time that I wouldn’t have had with my family, dogs and home. If this were a normal time, my time would be filled with school, softball games, homework and my job. This has given me time to take a step back and slow down before I run full speed into adulthood. ----Chloe May
Thanks for the memories
O
ne of the lesser mentioned aspects of this unfortunate situation is the effect that this quarantine is having on the student-teacher bond. Seeing each other several days a week was our sense of normalcy and now we have been reduced to a patchwork of Zoom meetings and Google Classroom updates. These methods do not compare to the face-to-face interactions we were accustomed to enjoying. This has been a difficult transition for us students, but we cannot imagine how hard it has been for the teachers and staff of BHS. We would like to express our gratitude for all the work they are doing to continue to ensure our success. We will treasure all the memories that we have shared during our four years at BHS. Our experience as Pioneers has been nothing short of spectacular and we will never forget the debt owed to our teachers. While we are physically separated, we are trying to make the most of the situation by keeping in touch and adapting to our unique circumstances. The Class of 2020 appreciates all the hard work and dedication our teachers have put in to make the end of this year as normal as possible. We thank, miss and appreciate you! ----Grayson Thomas, Reed Overton, Jordan McKinney, Braden Chapman and Willie Rouch, Boonville High School class officers
