Efficient Summer Sprinkler Usage: Keeping Your Lawn Lush
by DANIEL ROMERO
As the scorching summer heat settles in Texas, it's crucial to strike a balance between maintaining a healthy, vibrant lawn and conserving water. Properly utilizing your sprinkler system can play a significant role in achieving this delicate equilibrium.
Set an Appropriate Watering Schedule:
Establishing a consistent watering schedule is vital for the overall health of your lawn. During summer, it's generally recommended to water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce water loss due to evaporation. The optimal watering frequency for most grass types in Richmond, Texas, is around 1-1.5 inches per week, divided into two or three watering sessions.
Maintain Your Sprinkler System:
A well-maintained sprinkler system is key to efficient water usage. Regularly inspect your sprinkler heads for clogs, leaks, or misalignment. Clean or replace malfunctioning heads promptly to avoid wasting water. Ensure that the sprinkler coverage is evenly distributed to prevent dry spots or excessive runoff.
Embrace Zone Watering:
Different areas of your lawn may have varying water requirements due to factors like sun exposure, soil type, or plant type. Implementing zone watering allows you to adjust watering lev-
els for each area accordingly. Group plants with similar watering needs together and set your sprinkler system, accordingly, ensuring efficient water distribution.
Implement Water-Saving Techniques:
Incorporate water-saving techniques to maximize efficiency. Consider mulching your flower beds and around trees to reduce evaporation and retain moisture. Adjust the water pressure of your sprinkler system to minimize misting or overspray, which can lead to water wastage. Additionally, avoid watering pavement or other non-landscaped areas.
Monitor and Adjust:
Regularly monitor the condition of your lawn and adjust your watering schedule as needed. Look for signs of overwatering, such as mold, fungi, or spongy grass, which can indicate excessive moisture. Likewise, if your lawn displays signs of drought stress, adjust your watering schedule, or seek professional advice.
Keeping your lawn vibrant during the hot summer months in Texas requires a balanced approach to sprinkler usage. By following these tips, you can ensure efficient water usage, conserve this precious resource, and maintain a healthy, lush lawn that adds beauty to your community. Let's make responsible watering a collective effort as we enjoy the season while being mindful of sustainability.

Sweetgrass Singers: Sounds of Summer
by BARBARA SOBKOWIAK
On Saturday, June 17, the ballroom was bursting with music from the Sweetgrass Singers. Our “Sounds of Summer” concert covered a wide range of musical styles; indeed, something for everyone – including oldies, rock, show tunes and inspirational songs; from soloists to the full chorus. We rocked the ballroom with “Summer in the City”, “California Dreamin’”, and “Under the Boardwalk.”
With a nod to Broadway, the audience was moved by Margaret Epps’ memorable solo in “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess”, they were treated to Holly Vitemb’s beautiful rendition of “What I Did for Love” from “A Chorus Line” and enjoyed the Women’s Ensemble’s sweet performance of “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from “Oklahoma.” Soloist Marie Noeth captivated everyone with the pop classic “Summer Wind.”
Continuing to pull from the Great American Songbook our Octet sang a spirited medley of “In the Good Old Summertime and Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The audience joined in on the fun during the singalong of “You Are My Sunshine/The Yellow Rose of Texas/Amazing Grace.” The Sweetgrass Barbershop Quartet entertained with “When I’m 84” from a familiar Paul McCartney tune.
We closed the show with four favorite uplifting songs from our repertoire: “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “Let There Be Peace on Earth”, “You Raise Me Up”, and “Salute to America.”
For July’s performance, we sincerely thank our Director Cynthia Lara, Accompanists Lynne Handwerk and Dean Jones, Guests Soloists Margaret Epps and Holly Vitemb, Audio Technician Julian Buck, Videographer Ray Briere, the HOA staff, and our Hospitality Crew led by Marie Noeth. We also thank all the Singers who participate throughout the year but could not join us on the 17th. Also, we thank all of you who attended this special summer show. We certainly appreciate your support.
Members also acknowledge the efforts of the board for their organization and planning: Dean Jones, President; Werner Gondosch, Vice President; Sue Martin, Secretary; Gary Handwerk, Treasurer; and Marie Noeth, Director-at-Large.
The Sweetgrass Singers are neighbors who enjoy sharing their love of singing. We meet weekly throughout the year (Tuesdays, 4:30 pm, Ballroom Bluebell section). We will take a little break but start again in August when we begin looking at our December Holiday Show on Sunday, December 3. (Mark your calendars!)

Healthy Hydration: Staying Cool and Well-Hydrated in the Summer Heat
by DANIEL ROMERO
As the summer temperatures rise, it's crucial to prioritize proper hydration and beat the heat. With the right strategies, you can enjoy outdoor activities while keeping cool and preventing dehydration.
Understanding the Importance of Hydration:
Hydration acts as a catalyst for maintaining peak physical abilities during workouts or physical activities, aiding in endurance, and muscle function, and preventing cramps. It also plays a vital role in regulating body temperature, allowing for efficient cooling through sweat during hot weather. By prioritizing hydration, individuals can unlock their full potential, stay energized, and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle!
Hydration Tips and Tricks:
a. Water-Rich Foods: Water-rich foods not only help to stay hydrated but also provide a host of essential nutrients and electrolytes. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and leafy greens are excellent examples of such foods. These hydrating options are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that contribute to overall health and well-being. They not only quench thirst but also replenish vital electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, aiding in muscle function and maintaining fluid balance.
b. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day: To maintain optimal hydration levels, it's crucial for everyone to make sipping water a regular habit, even when not feeling thirsty. Hydration is not solely reliant on thirst cues. Set reminders to drink water before, during, and after physical activities to replenish the fluids lost through sweat.
c. Create Refreshing Beverages: When it comes to creating homemade refreshing beverages, the possibilities are endless. Consider infusing water with slices of refreshing fruits like lemon, lime, or cucumber, along with a few sprigs of herbs like mint or basil, for a burst of flavor and hydration. Another option is to brew and chill iced herbal teas, such as hibiscus or chamomile, which provide hydration and offer various health benefits.
d. Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: It's important to be mindful of their alcohol and caffeine intake as these beverages can contribute to dehydration. While it's tempting to reach for that cup of coffee or enjoy an alcoholic beverage, excessive consumption can have a negative effect, leading to fluid loss and potential dehydration. Consider opting for alternatives like herbal teas. You can maintain optimal hydration levels and support your overall well-being by making conscious choices and exploring hydrating alternatives.

July is synonymous with fun in the sun. In the northern hemisphere, July is typically characterized by sunny days, warm weather and long hours of daylight, making it an ideal month to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. Though it might be a great time for some R&R, July also boasts an interesting history. As revelers soak up some sun this summer, they can ponder these fun facts about the month of July.
1July is named after a person whose been famous for thousands of years. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, Roman dictator Julis Caesar developed the precursor to the Gregorian calendar used today. Though that made him worthy of a month named in his honor, it didn’t do much to protect him during his life, as Caesar was famously assassinated in 44 B.C. 2July is a celebratory month for fans of revolution. American Independence Day (July 4) and Bastille Day (July 14), which commemorates the storming of the Bastille and the dawn of the French Revolution in 1789, are among the notable revolutionary moments celebrated in July.
3Baseball historians know that many significant events in the game have taken place in July, and some records set in the month have withstood longer than others. On July 12, 1931, Mel Ott of the New York Giants hit his 100th career homerun, becoming the youngest player to reach that milestone. Ott was 22 years and 132 days old when he set the mark, which still stands today. 4
One of the more famous statements in United States history was uttered in July, though it wasn’t within American borders or even on the planet Earth. On July 20, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, after stepping onto the surface of the moon, declared, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” 5
Two men who played integral roles in the American colonies gaining their independence from Great Britain both passed away on July 4th, the day that celebrates that very independence. On July 4th, 1826, former presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who were once friends, then political rivals and, finally, friends again, passed away within hours of each other.

Talkin’ Turpie Mouthwaterin' Food in Our Hood
by JUDY TURPIE, Resident & Lakehouse Concierge
Many of you have heard a rumor that I am going on a 1224-month adventure with my son Dave. It’s true! We are moving to Chongqing, China on August 1st.
While researching Chongqing I found that we won’t have such a variety of cuisines to choose from, compared to the diverse culture here in Houston. I will miss all the different restaurants from around the world that Houston has to offer.
From Aji Izakeva & Shogun Japanese, Clancy’s Irish Public House, Bob’s Tacos, Tony’s Street Tacos, Mimi’s Creole New Orleans, Pho Huyhn Vietnamese (the best Banh Mi sandwiches!), and a variety of northern & southern Indian restaurants -to Texas Biergarten’s German food there is mouth waterin’ food for every taste from so many different cultures.
As a recent Sushi convert (cooked) I love the ambiance, food & staff at Aji Izakeva. A visit there is like being in colorful Tokyo, Japan. The Houston Roll is my favorite!! If you are not into sushi they have tempura, ramen & several other wonderful items including lamb ribs.
Tex-Mex is a hot-button conversation for Texans & Houstonians. Although Bob’s Tacos in the Historic District of Rosenberg has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives I prefer the newish Tony’s Street Taco. It has a fun atmosphere, fast service, and yummy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. For fish tacos, Gringo’s is my favorite. For Mexican “comfort food,” nothing beats either of the two Lopez locations. You won’t be disappointed.
Pho Huyhn has great vermicelli bowls and the BEST Banh Mi
sandwiches!!! The French bread for the sandwiches is wonderful, the best in Houston according to my husband Tom. They also have a special spring roll with either grilled beef, grilled shrimp, or grilled chicken.
Italian food is another hot-button topic as there is such a range of styles and ingredients. We go to Olive Garden, because eating gluten-free there is easy, and the food is hot and fresh. Their grilled salmon served with broccoli is filling, as is the soup & salad appetizers. For pizza Grimaldi’s is our favorite. Some of their combinations are fabulous either with a wheat crust or cauliflower crust. They might take longer than your usual “Hot and Ready” chains, but it is worth it. A favorite Italian restaurant of many of our friends is LaMonte’s in Pecan Grove. They are very busy so be sure to make a reservation.
I will miss all my favorite restaurants here in Houston and let you know about our new food finds. Have a wonderful year and I will see you again!

Club Spotlight: Gardening Club
by DANIEL ROMERO
Here at Sweetgrass, there are many clubs and groups that residents can join and be a part of. We wanted to highlight the wonderful community clubs that can enhance the daily lives of the residents. This month, our spotlight features the sweetgrass garden club. This group is made up of passionate gardeners, who have discovered the joy and serenity of cultivating nature's beauty right in their own backyards.
The Sweetgrass Garden Club was started in 2012 by a small group of new residents and has grown steadily every year! It has over 200 members and is one of the largest clubs in Sweetgrass. The objective of the organization is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs and to support the protection of native trees, plants, and birds. They have monthly meetings at the Lakehouse with interesting speakers and fellows, where they update members on upcoming field trips, luncheons, and garden club business. It’s a great way to meet people and learn about gardening. The club usually meets on the first Tuesday of every month from September to May at 10 AM.
The Gardening Club welcomes all types of gardening, some members prefer more formal yards while others prefer natural settings. Members are always sharing methods for minimizing chemicals, and how to effectively use sprinklers to prevent runoff. With the club being fortunate to have many master gardeners and master naturalists, as well as having ties to the Front Bend masters gardening group – it is safe to say that the members are always learning about the gardening world.
Some successful gardening endeavors the club has participated in recently include the donation of wildflower seeds, plants, and trees to the Sweetgrass Nature Park. The club hopes to increase fundraising efforts to continue the enhancement of the Nature Park for the benefit of the natural environment and the enjoyment of the Sweetgrass residents. They also want to continue to educate the members on all aspects of gardening with monthly speakers.
Interested in joining the club? Membership dues are $20 annually (September – June) and include a 10% discount to Enchanted Forest or Enchanted Garden. Once you join, you will be added to the club’s mailing list and will receive updated information about meetings and events. In addition, you can join the Sweetgrass Garden Club Facebook page!
