Happy Summer!!
How can it be July already? I don’t know – but time is flying by! We’ve just completed our 93rd Annual Mexia Rodeo and are gearing up for 4th of July activities and Cindy Walker Days!
The Cindy Walker Foundation has been working hard on getting Cindy Walker Days together and you can learn more at www.cindywalkerdays.com and follow Cindy Walker Days and Cindy Walker Foundation on Facebook and Instagram.
How are you spending your summer? There is a lot to do around here if you need a staycation! Old Fort Parker, Fort Parker State Park, the Mexia Library, and more! Don’t forget Neurothon Family Game and Entertainment over in Groesbeck for things for the kids (or adults!) so they can play games, shoot pool, VR and more. Great place! And of course, we have lots of great food options, too. Just enjoy, meet with friends and family, and have a great time. Be sure you make a trip out to Lightsey’s too and get some of those fresh fruits and
veggies. Family owned and operated, their family serving our community for many years. Lots of options there!
Enjoy the summer and we look forward to more things to come through the Chamber, Mexia Downtown, and other organizations.

Cindy Walker Days takes stages, July 21-22
By Skip Leon The Mexia News
The inaugural Cindy Walker Days festival will be July 21-22 and is expected to draw thousands of people to Mexia.
The two-day event honoring County Music Hall of Fame songwriter Cindy Walker will feature some top-notch music on three stages. The timing of the festival also commemorates Walker’s birthday, July 20.
According to the event’s website, cindywalkerdays.com, “Cindy Walker Days is the annual fundraising event to promote and preserve the legacy of Mexia’s own Cindy Walker. A multi-day music and songwriters festival that attracts thousands to the small town of Mexia, Texas, where Cindy lived for more than 5 decades.”
The two days of music will culminate Saturday night, July 22, with a show by Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts, and then an all-star tribute to Walker. The show will take place at the Old Fort Parker Main Stage.
Walker had a long association with Wills, who recorded more than 50 of her songs with the original Texas Playboys in the 1940s. Many of the songs were written by Walker specifically for Wills and his band.
The music lineup for Friday, July 21, at the Old Fort Parker Main Stage will be headlined by The Bellamy Brothers, who have been playing
together for more than 50 years. They hit it big in 1976 when their song, “Let Your Love Flow,” became a No. 1 hit on the pop charts. After that, they veered more into the country music genre and have had 14 No. 1 hits over the years. They continue to tour extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
First Presbyterian Church (Cindy & Mama Oree’s home church) welcomes the community to a Cindy Walker Hymn Sing at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22.
Fellowship & Snacks will be at 9:30 a.m. with the Hymn Sing to follow. Several of Cindy’s “babies” (Walker’s youth choir) will share stories and all hymns will be written by Walker, except for a hymn written by her grandfather, F.L. Eiland, and sung by the Presbyterian church choir at Mama Walker’s funeral.
A Cindy Walker Tour Shuttle will run on Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. with pickup at the Mexia Civic Center.
There will be music during the afternoons from noon to 5 p.m. on the Western Swing Stage at the Mexia Civic Center at 101 S. McKinney St., with a lineup including singer-songwriters Liz Rose, Big Joe Walker, Donna Beckham, Foster and Quinn, a Texas Songwriter U showcase, and many more.
There will be an official After Party each night from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the famed Cowboy Western Club in Mexia.
The party Friday, July 21, will feature Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts. The party Saturday, July 22, will feature Monte Warden and The Wagoneers as well as DiamondbackTX.
In addition to the music, Cindy Walker Days
will include hundreds of vendors, a full carnival and a variety of food.
The festival is a fundraiser for the Cindy Walker Foundation, a non-profit focused on preserving historic Texas music and promoting future generations to create music.
The Foundation was originally founded in 2022 to restore Cindy Walker’s house in Mexia, which had fallen into disrepair. While going through the house, a trove of Walker’s personal tapes, including songs that had never been heard before, was discovered.
Cindy Walker Days is a way of not only raising money, but preserving the music and legacy of the legendary songwriter who lived in Mexia for most of her life and wrote many of her songs at her Brooks Street home.
Tickets for the two day festival are available on the web site www.cindywalkerdays.com.
Tickets for a weekend VIP pass cost $150. That includes entrance to the concerts at the Western Swing Stage and the Old Fort Parker Main Stage as well as The Cowboy After Party both days.
Tickets for a weekend music pass, which includes entrance to the concerts at both stages, cost $75. The cost for individual day music passes is $40 for Friday or Saturday. These do not include entrance to the After Party. Tickets for the After Party cost $20 and are included only with the weekend VIP pass.
Full set times and all artists will be announced at cindywalkerdays.com.

By Skip Leon The Mexia News
What began as a campaign to preserve the house in Mexia where Cindy Walker lived led to a historic discovery that could rock the country music industry.
Inside, in a walk-in closet area in the attic, hundreds of cassette and reel-to-reel tapes containing never-before-heard music by the legendary songwriter were found.
The tapes are currently being digitized and archived at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville.
It is estimated that the reel-to-reel tapes date from the late 1950s to the early 1970s and the cassette tapes are from the 1980s and 1990s.
Lindsay Liepman is working on a documentary about Walker and founded the Cindy Walker Foundation last spring to preserve the house where Walked lived at 114 S. Brooks St., which had fallen into disrepair. At that time, there was no inkling of what was inside.
She stressed the importance of the discovery of Walker’s music.
“I think this is unprecedented for our generation, to find a Country Music Hall of Fame songwriter’s unheard, unreleased, unpublished music, and it was just sitting in the house all those years,” Liepman said. “This will make a real impact on the country music industry as far as revealing her relevance, but also making her currently relevant.”
The discovery will enhance Walker’s alreadyvenerable legacy.
“I think the impact is, all of a sudden these country artists of today will become more aware of the trail Cindy Walker blazed for them, so to speak,” Liepman said. “All of a sudden, there’s new music the estate, as well as the Foundation, can work together to get recorded by today’s artists. I think there’s going to be a whole new generation of Cindy Walker fans.”
Liepman said the cache included about 100 reel-to-reel tapes and hundreds of cassettes. She estimated there are 75 never-before-heard songs.
The tapes feature Walker playing guitar and singing her songs. On some tapes her mother, Oree, with whom she lived, played piano.
“The music is a majority of Cindy’s demos,” Liepman said. “She would record her own demos and while Oree was alive she would play piano and Cindy would play guitar and sing the songs. (Cindy) would even type up the lyrics of the song and put it inside. From all accounts, it looks like these were her copies of the original demos she cut.”
Liepman said Walker would pitch her songs directly to an artist by sending them a demo. She might talk on the phone with the artist, who would decide whether or not to record the song. Sometimes, musicians would send back demos to her with their version of the song.
Among the tapes, Liepman said, were demos sent to Walker from Ray Charles and Glen Campbell singing their versions of Walker’s song, “You Don’t Know Me.” There is a demo from Jim Reeves.
There also is a demo from George Jones, believed to be from the 1960s, singing a gospel song Walker had sent to him. “From our research, it looks like it was released after his death, in 2016 possibly,” Liepman said.
There also is a demo tape of Walker singing her song, “Going Away Party,” which she wrote for
Bob Wills. Liepman said the tape is believed to be the only known copy of Walker singing the song.
Some tapes did not have music, but were of Walker talking.
“We did not only find music, but we found recordings of her telling her life story,” Liepman said. “It’s fascinating. She answered the rumor of her and Bob Wills. She answered the question about a previous marriage.
“This is a treasure trove, an archive that would have been lost forever. We’re getting to know who Cindy Walker really was, based on all the things we found in the house. She was all about the music. Her music was everything to her,” Liepman said.
If all goes according to plan, the first time the public will have an opportunity to hear some of the new music will be in a documentary.
“The plan is to use some of the new music in the upcoming documentary,” Liepman said. “During that process we’ll have the opportunity to approach current country music stars who actually perform and record. We are anticipating that will be a part of the documentary.”
Liepman said the hope is the documentary will be completed and released in 2024 or 2025.

Time to appreciate!
Each year the Chamber likes to organize a recognition of the staff at MISD as they return to school, by serving lunch. We appreciate community involvement to help make this possible. We will be reaching out to our restaurant members to get bids for lunch, and we are asking community help in the expense as we are serving meals to over 350 staff for the MISD. This a great opportunity for service organizations and churches to be involved by bringing desserts. Door prizes may also be donated as we like to offer a large number of door prizes during the lunch. Individuals and businesses are welcome to contribute door prizes and financially. We also welcome volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up. We appreciate the First Baptist Church for letting us use the CLC for this great event.
If you have any questions, would like to donate, or volunteer, please reach out to the Chamber at 254-5625569 or director@mexiachamber.com. This is a labor of love from the community, and we appreciate the support in making this possible.

The Woodson Family values doing things right the first time, to give more than the bare minimum in all that we do and that honesty and full disclosure are essential to a trusting, fruitful relationship.”
Benefits of Weekly Worship
I’ve only been in Mexia for a little over two years now and one thing I have learned is that Mexia has plenty of places to worship God. Being a minister for the Lord’s congregation, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t encourage you to participate with one of the many congregations in the Mexia area.
Now I’ve heard it all before, the many reasons why some don’t attend. My favorite is,”That church is full of hypocrites.” Now, if one were to think about that for a bit then I believe one would see some irony. What if that same accusation was used for…oh I don’t know let’s say a fitness gym? “I ain’t going to that gym. It’s full of fat people!” Well of course it is, that’s what the gym is for! Sure there are skinny people and muscle heads in
there too but the reason they all go to a gym is to change! Change a shape, change their health, change a lifestyle all for the better.
The Psalmist said it best.
Come, let’s sing for joy to the Lord, Let’s shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Let’s come before His presence with a song of thanksgiving, Let’s shout joyfully to Him in songs with instruments. For the Lord is a great God And a great King above all gods, In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are also His. The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land.
Psalms 95:31-5
Congregational worship is fellowshipping, communing and worshiping with The Lord God Almighty alongside like minded people who have some of the same imperfections as you do. Here is one of many ways to look at the benefits of worship. We all are just trying to get our spiritual work out so we can get into spiritual shape for one more week. Please find a church and attend service this Sunday. Worship God and thank him for all he’s done to you. Communion and fellowship with others and see how the rest of your week goes.
