Ennis Bluebonnet Trails &

Festival

April 19-21, 2024

Ennis is the official Bluebonnet City and Trail of Texas, and each April, thousands of visitors arrive to drive the trails in Eastern Ellis County, checking out the bluebonnets. Accompanying that is the Bluebonnet Festival, which in 2024 is set for April 19-21. It features vendors, live music, a Farmers Market, and more.

The National Polka Festival

Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26, 2024

Held annually on Memorial Day weekend, the National Polka Festival offers an abundance of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family in a small town atmosphere.

Texas Motorplex

Racing your thing? You’re in luck. It’s Ennis’ thing, too! Texas Motorplex is located west of Ennis on Highway 287. The facility is known for being a host of the National Hot Rod Association playoffs each fall, but it’s also a year-round event center in Ennis. Events start in February and run through November, among them National Hot Rod Diesel Association events, Import Face Offs, car shows, and Fast Fridays. Fast Fridays give people a chance to take their own cars to the strip to give drag racing a try. It’s a way for people to legally satisfy their need for speed, for a very reasonable fee.

Ennis means year round fun

Each January, the Unity in the Community organization celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with various activities.

• Bluebonnet Market (formerly Ennis Farmers Market) is held on North Dallas Street in historic downtown Ennis on Saturdays April through October. It begins at 8 a.m., and there are food and craft vendors, entertainment, and activities.

• Cinco de Mayo Cultural Celebration is the newest addition to the Ennis Festival line-up. Join us downtown for this beautiful celebration next May!

• Ennis Main Street Midway is an annual event. Bring the whole family and celebrate your inner child. Everyone loves the carnival!

• Patriotism is important, and Veterans Day and Memorial Day are celebrated at the Ennis Veterans Memorial Park, 2301 Ennis Parkway. The memorial features monuments, flags and more.

• Blues on Main is held in June. Organized by Unity in the Community, this event features live music, a health fair and many family friendly activities.

• Ennis Freedom Fest is always a hit. There is a Red, White & Bike Parade starting downtown. The community’s fireworks celebration, which also features live music, is hosted at Veterans Memorial Park.

• Ennis Autumn Daze is held downtown each October.

• At Christmas, you will enjoy The Lights of Ennis. Homes are decorated throughout the community for a Lights of Ennis contest. Downtown Ennis and other parts of the city come to life with thousands of lights, thanks to the City of Ennis. A Lighted Christmas Parade and Block Party draws a huge crowd. There are several festive events throughout the season, including: Cookies with Mrs. Claus, Horse drawn carriage and wagon rides, Elf Seek & Find, Snow hill, & more!

The Great Outdoors

If walking in the park, dipping a line, hitting a ball, putting your feet in the sand, or just relaxing is your thing, there is plenty to do in Ennis.

• Bluebonnet Park: On Ennis Parkway, west of Hwy 287, and follow the signs. Facility includes eight lighted ball fields, six soccer fields, 10 acres of dedicated recreational open space, a two-acre fishing lake, and a 0.7-mile jogging path. This magnificent facility is available for softball, baseball and soccer tournaments and attracts teams from all across the State of Texas.

• Disc golf: Ennis is home to a disc golf course that opened in 2016. The scenic course is located adjacent to the dam on the south end of Lake Clark.

• Golf is open to the public at Red Oak Valley Golf Club in Red Oak and at the Old Brickyard course in Ferris.

• If the water is your thing, check out Lake Bardwell. An estimated half million people visit the 3,500-acre lake each year, enjoying fishing, boating, camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, and just about any other outdoor activity within and along its 25 miles of shoreline. It is more than 5 miles long and a mile wide at its largest point. Both the lake and surrounding campgrounds are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There is a marina and several boat ramps. You can reach the marina at 972-646-5330. Accessible parks include High View Park, Little Mustang Park, Love Park, Mott Park and Waxahachie Creek Park. Camping reservations or additional information is available at 972-875-5711 and online at www.recreation.gov.

• Lake Clark Park & Kachina Prairie: Found on the west end of Baldridge Street, it is a perfect place to have a picnic, to fish, to play on the playground, or to take a walk with a lake view. Check out the Kachina Prairie and the buffalo statue there.

• Play on the playground or go for a walk at Lions Park at the corner of Hall Street and Lampasas streets.

• Ennis is a tennis town, too. The EISD Tennis Center features nine championship quality tennis courts (four indoors), a snack bar, and a pro shop.

• Youth soccer, baseball and softball programs are active in the community. Please contact the City of Ennis Parks and Recreation Department at 972-8751234 for more information.

• Up for some swimming? Check out the pool at Sokol Ennis, 2622 E. Hwy 34. Visit their website www.sokolennis.com, follow on Facebook, or call 972-8757959 for more information before visiting.

• Rotary Park: (formerly Jaycee Park) is located at 2300 Park Street offers a splash pad (open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day), party pavillions, playgrounds, beach volleyball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, baseball practice diamonds, a National Fitness Center Fitness Court, shaded gazebos and more. The park surrounds historic Old City Lake as the onemile paved Ivan Goodwin Walking Trail connects to the adjoining Kiwanis Park.

• Veterans Memorial Park: Located at 2301 Ennis Parkway, The park includes a stunning tribute to local war veterans, a memorial unlike any other in the metroplex. The site also includes 3 soccer fields, concession and restroom facilities, picnic table, playground, a 1/4-mile walking path and is the host of Ennis’ annual Freedom Fest.

Indoor Fun

• Lions Lanes features public bowling lanes, snack bar, laser tag, video games and a sports bar. It is at 2303 W. Ennis Ave.

• The Gameroom is located at 807 West Lake Bardwell Drive and offers entertainment options safe for kids and adults alike including pool, darts, arcades, food and drinks. In addition to these entertainment features, they also offer private party options, live music and show events.

• Avant Garde Theatre of Dance offers a variety of dance classes for both children and adults. Their studio is located at 213 W. Ennis Avenue.

• The Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum is located on the corner of Northeast Main Street and Ennis Avenue. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.4 p.m., and Sundays 1-4 p.m. Mondays are open only by appointment for group tours. Please call 972-875-1901 at least 48 hours in advance for reservations.

• Ennis’ heritage is Czech, and there is a museum to prove it! See authentic Czech costumes, memorabilia, dolls, photographs, crystal, books and more at the museum inside Sokol Hall Activity Center. It’s open during special events and by appointment. For more info call Liz Moucka at 972-765-3733.

• Ennis Public Library is a multimedia center. Media of all kinds are available for use, and there are programs for children, youth and adults throughout the year. The library on W. Ennis Ave. is currently undergoing major renovations and is operating out of a temporary location at 115 W. Brown St. until its completion.

Ennis Alive! Stage & Sound

Ennis has several entertainment venues for your listening and viewing enjoyment. They include:

• Ennis Public Theatre offers up plays of all genres to delight audiences –from laugh out loud comedies to heart warming dramas, musicals that will have you singing in your seats and “K.I.D.S.” productions to delight the whole family. There are at least six shows done each year. Ennis Public Theatre is overseen by an active board of directors. The theatre moved to historical downtown Ennis at 113 North Dallas St. early in 2017.

• Theatre Rocks! serves Ellis County and the surrounding region, presenting high quality mainstream theater in an intimate setting. It is also the theater’s mission to honor its Master Artist and Creator by loving and encouraging artists, serving its audience and giving back to the region. Theatre Rocks! artistic director Bill Rhoten, with many years of acting, writing and directing experience in the Dallas area, and wife, executive director Suzanne Rhoten, a certified non-profit manager, oversee all aspects of production. Located at 505 NW Main St. in Ennis, it offers six productions per year.

• Bristol Opry: Located in the old Bristol School, about 15 minutes east of Ennis, the Opry features local talent performing live on stage. The show goes on the fourth Saturday of each month at 7 p.m., except in December. Country, Western and Bluegrass music are featured.

• Bardwell Opry: The Bardwell Opry, located in the Bardwell Community Center, is every fifth Saturday at 7 p.m. Country, Western and Bluegrass music are featured.

• Galaxy Drive-In Theatre, just north of Ennis and off I-45, features seven screens. It has authentic vintage car speakers, or enjoy the modern convenience of listening to the movies over your vehicle’s FM radio. Movies are shown every night, rain or stars.

• Live music is performed at local establishments and halls, and during community events throughout the year. Check The Ennis News for updates.
