COMMITTED TO YOU.
Welcome to Hamilton f you are looking for that special spot in Texas where friendly folks treasure their past while improving their future, then I would like to welcome you to Hamilton. Nestled in the Pecan Creek valley along the northern edge of the Texas Hill Country, you will find a vibrant city square surrounding a recently restored traditional county courthouse with park land running nearly a mile in each direction through the city center. Having recently been named a national Main Street city you will enjoy learning how we are working to showcase our many historical buildings, new library, fine restaurants, churches, locally owned businesses, museums, municipal airport, civic theater and professional services to better serve our community and those who visit. For those of you who may consider settling here I can tell you we have one of the top 100 rural medical facilities in the country, fine schools, great internet connectivity, good fire protection, and policing to make sure our city is one of the safest you will find anywhere. In addition, you will find the rural lifestyle here, as well as in the area surrounding Hamilton to be warm and welcoming, with recreational opportunities aplenty, including a golf course and a first class rodeo venue. Again, welcome to Hamilton and, if by chance you decide to stay, that too would be a good choice.

A Main Street City
amilton gained Main Street accreditation in 2020. The National Main Street program is a federal-statecommunity partnership to re-store America’s historic downtown areas architecturally, commercially, and culturally. As a Main Street city, Hamilton joins 89 Texas Main Street cities and over 1600 neighborhoods and communities across the U.S. to bring economic vitality
downtown while celebrating historic character. The Main Street Program stimulates private sector downtown reinvestment in historic downtowns, and helps retain, expand, and recruit small businesses, while also creating new jobs in Texas. Participating communities have generated more than $4.4 billion in overall reinvestment into their historic downtowns, and created almost 42,000 jobs and more than 10,000 small
businesses. The Hamilton Historic Main Street Program is a grass-roots, volunteerdriven effort to preserve and revitalize the historic core of our community. Hamilton City Council and Hamilton EDC support the Hamilton Main Street program as it works closely with our downtown business and property owners, Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton County Historical Commission and other local organizations.

Frida’s mexican restaurant Preserving the hunt Racks and Tracks Taxidermy 281. “I’ve always loved animals and had all kinds in my yard,” said Martin. “I just enjoyed seeing them, watching them.” “Me too, plus I had a great-uncle who had a processing place, so it didn’t bother me to think about taxidermy,” Macy said. After graduating high school, Macy went to college to study early childhood development to be a special education teacher. After a year she decided that was not for her, and she worked for the City of Hamilton for a while. Martin approached her one day with the idea of a taxidermy business, and she agreed it was something they could do together. So they started saving their money. They built their shop before attending Central Texas School of Taxidermy in Snyder early this year and opened their
shop March 15 with no debt. At taxidermy school they learned to mount white-tail deer, varmints, fish and birds. “We’ll do pretty much anything,” Martin said. In fact, their shop counter is decorated with a rattlesnake. “I don’t know why some people won’t do snakes,” Martin said. “They aren’t that hard. “This is one from the ranch I work at, and we have more in the freezer.” Some taxidermists won’t do pets, and Martin said if they get any pet requests, they will send them off to be mounted. When they get in an animal, Martin said they measure it and send it to the tannery. Usually the turnaround for the tannery is 4 ½ months, but with the pandemic, that has stretched to about nine months.

At the tannery, the animal is fleshed, salted and tanned with chemicals. What is returned is a thin hide that is easily pliable. “It’s just skin and hair,” Macy said. “We wet it and pull it over a mannequin, then sew it up.” Business has been steady since they opened, which surprised them both. They expected to be bored until deer season. “Who would have thought that our first shoulder mount would be a buffalo?” Martin said. “Then a mountain lion, and we have a bear coming.” “We thought we would be sitting around waiting ’til deer season and then maybe have 50,” Macy said, “and maybe some turkey.” The pair show artistry and skill in their mountings, with intricate brush work on their fish and fowl. “It has made me so much more OCD though,” Macy said. “It takes a lot of patience.” “Fish are tough because of the scales,
but most people just want a replica,” Martin said. “You can take a picture of the fish and throw the fish away and we can do a replica with paint and puff pastels,” Macy added. “We can do any fish they want.” They did do a real fish for Jaxon Edwards though, and were very pleased with the results. “It turned out better than a replica,” Martin said. Birds are also labor-intensive, according to Macy. “We give them four baths,” she said. “First in Dawn soap and water to get the blood and grease out of the feathers, then we soak it in paint thinner, give it another dawn bath and tumble it with corn grits. “After it rolls about 10 or 15 minutes, it comes out fluffy. It’s crazy how it just fluffs back up. “We’re having a blast,” she said. “It’s a dream come true.”

Making Candy Dutchman's Hidden Valley
By Kymbirlee Jeschke utchman’s Hidden Valley is a true hidden treasure on the path that is Highway 281. Nestled in the hills just north of Hamilton, Dutchman’s has been a family tradition since 1961. Stepping through the doors is like stepping back in time. Nostalgic candies like the Charlestown Chew, Slo Poke and Sugar Babies greet customers. Raggedy Ann and Andy sit in the toy room where travelers can buy tea sets, retro slinkies and stick horses. Perhaps the best hidden treasure at Hidden Valley is not the fresh baked bread, bison summer sausage from the smokehouse, jalapeno peanut brittle
or dark chocolate covered sea salt caramels. It’s not even the traditional Apple Kuchen. The truest treasure at Hidden Valley is The Dutchman’s daughter, grandson and almost-family crew that put the hidden valley on the map. Amongst the almost-family crew is candy maker Raye Ann Bynum. Like many youth, Bynum grew up in Hamilton and moved away. Preferring the slower, relaxed pace of small town life, she returned and can be found in the Dutchman’s open candy kitchen five days a week. “It’s rewarding and interesting,” said Bynum. “I’m never bored.”

Neither are the travelers that browse the store while waiting on a sandwich or stand and watch Bynum as she weighs up sugar and nuts – 25 to 40 pounds of nuts for four batches -- to stir slowly in her big copper pot. When it comes to candy making, Bynum attributes patience and a thermometer to success. “I follow recipes religiously according to what the temperature says,” she said. “Don’t overheat chocolate, just be patient and stir it
a lot and don’t put it in the fridge.” The recipes Bynum uses are family recipes passed down through the Dutchman’s lineage and she does it all the old-fashioned way -- making fudge, hand-dipping chocolates, pouring peanut brittle and even producing old-fashioned candies like horehound and cinnamon drops. Visitors with perfect timing might even get to sample one or two.

Here are some of the recipes that have become staples at Hamilton church gatherings. Enjoy! ď‚Ť

Vegetable Soup
St. John Lutheran Church and Preschool
Ollie would usually prepare 2030 gallons of soup for the St. John Lutheran congregation. He served it with crackers and cornbread. A fixture at St. John Lutheran, Ollie passed in 2014, but the church still serves his soup at gatherings. This recipe serves 100-150 people with some left over to send home.

15-20 lbs. chuck roast cubed (trim off excess tallow, but leave some for flavor.)
1-gallon whole kernel corn (drained)
5-10 lbs. chunked peeled potatoes
1-gallon cut green beans (drained)
5 lbs. sliced peeled carrots 3 lbs. diced celery 1-gallon diced tomato 1-gallon tomato sauce
1 -gallon sweet peas (drained)
1-gallon lima beans (drained) 1-gallon small whole peeled tomatoes (don’t drain) Salt-pepper-chili powder to taste
Use 10-gallon stock pot or 20-30-gallon cast iron wash pot. Cover meat with water and cook until tender. After meat has cooked and tender add enough water to pot to cook potatoes, carrots, and celery. Don’t overcook potatoes so they stay soft but firm. When potatoes, carrots and celery are tender add tomato sauce, whole tomatoes and diced tomatoes as well as the other vegetables. Add water to desired consistency, bring back to a soft boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Be careful not to scorch the tomatoes and cause your potatoes to disintegrate. Add salt, pepper, and chili powder to taste.

Hamilton's Pecan Creek Park now offers a new 18-hole disc golf course. Surrounded by large trees and rustic terrain, the challenging course was designed by Hamilton High School freshman Joe Polster as a 4-H project. Disc golf is played like traditional golf but a frisbeelike disc is used instead of balls and clubs. Each hole is sponsored by a local business with signage to direct players through the course or a course map is available at hamiltontexas.com.

Client relationships are extremely important to me. Everyone has a story to tell and I want to know my client’s story, dreams, goals and aspirations. Over the course of her professional career as a financial advisor, Melanie J. Housden, AAMS®, has been on a continual journey to provide better opportunities with lower cost to clients. The ability to finally do business as Melanie J Financial, LLC, has been a long-time dream. Melanie learned the secret to success working alongside her grandfather at his hardware store in McLean, a small town in the Texas Panhandle where she grew up. “My success in developing lifelong relationships with my clients comes from the skills my grandfather taught me,” she said. Melanie holds a business degree from Wayland Baptist University, her Series 7, 63, 66, Insurance License and the AAMS® – Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation and has two decades of experience in the financial industry. “Learning what is important to my clients enables me to devise a plan that will help them pursue financial freedom through all aspects of their lives and will allow their legacy to continue on in their families lives,” Melanie says. “I keep their goals and needs at the forefront of every decision. My clients are successful people – from all walks of life. But they worry that they might not be making the very best decisions when it comes to living a rich and full life. If I can take the financial worries away from my clients, then I am successful. My clients are like a part of my family and I treasure each and every one of them. Truly, we are stronger together.” Melanie currently resides in Hamilton with her husband Rick. They have two daughters: Alexandria (and husband Reagan), and Abbie. Outside of work, Melanie loves spending time with her family including their three dogs Dixie, Lily, and Dude. She loves to travel and shop. An advocate for her community, Melanie is currently a Board of Director for the Hamilton Economic Development Corporation.

“Our restored historic Hamilton County Courthouse is an economic revitalization spark to our downtown. The ‘working courthouse’ serves as the center of our county governmental activities and has historically been the social center of this rural community. It is and will continue to be the source of pride to young and old alike, as well as an important landmark to visitors.”

amilton County’s first courthouse was built in 1878 in the midst of an already thriving square. Before then the courthouse functioned in Livery Station, James Rice’s Store, Jones Store House, Hamilton School House, F.M. Graves and Company and the Crescent Saloon. Hamilton County’s first courthouse was built of native stone in only eight months for $11,559. Eight years later it was destroyed by fire. Hamilton’s current courthouse was built in 1887 but was modernized and expanded to include wings and the bell tower. The Hamilton County Courthouse is the only one in the State withcrenellated towers. Other points of interest are the cast stone medallions depicting frontier icons over the secondary entries.

ow in it’s third year, Aleman Acres provides locally grown flowers to the floral industry. From hydrangeas to asters and thistles to mustard, Aleman Acres grows hundreds of varieties of flowers, greenery and woodies like eucalyptus for the floral industry. “I have always enjoyed growing things and landscaping,” said owner and grower Lisa Schrank. “We live on property that has been in my husband’s family for over 100 years. I wanted to do something to beautify the land but was still unsure of what direction to go. I always thought it would be fun to grow pumpkins and
have a pumpkin patch for people to come out and pick pumpkins with fall activities to make it an experience for the whole family. My idea was to see if it was feasible to grow flowers during the spring and summer months and do the pumpkin patch for fall. It looked good on paper, but it was a HUGE undertaking!” Lisa's husband Fred and son, Zachary Niemeier, are partners in Aleman Acres. Both have full-time jobs, which leaves the daily operation to Lisa. Fred has a degree in soil sciences, which comes in handy for soil health. Zachary helped with the high tunnels, three 96 feet by 30 feet by 12 feet tall pipe-framed structures covered in heavy plastic with roll-up sides. Like green

houses, high tunnels enable Lisa to extend the growing season of some floral varieties. However, green houses are totally climate controlled. “My family has been amazing through this journey,” she said. A member of the Association of Cut Flower Growers, Aleman Acres sells wholesale to local florists -- Hamilton Florist, Burlap Rose and The Blossom Shoppe in Clifton -- and in Dallas. Lisa even provided flowers for an event for Laura Bush. “Supporting your local florist is supporting us here at Aleman Acres as they really try to order flowers from us first before ordering from a wholesaler,” said Lisa.
“There is a huge initiative to get florists and wholesalers to buy only American-grown flowers,” said Lisa. “Locally grown flowers are cut fresh and have a much longer vase life. Something to think about the next time you want to order flowers for a special event. We all need to support American-grown whenever possible.” Lisa plants a lot of flowers both in variety and quantity -- about 700 to 1000 sunflowers every week. This year she is experimenting with some new varieties: digitalis, lunaria, castor beans and three new thistles. To reduce waste, Lisa has been experimenting with dried flowers and is creating jewelry, handmade paper,
cards, wreaths, baskets, bookmarks, sachets and soap with her dried flowers. She markets her products under the brand Beyond the Garden Gate and has been taking them to the Waco Farmers Market. Aleman Acres is opening to the public this fall. Visitors will be able to shop Beyond the Garden Gate products, take photos in the sunflowers and enjoy a pumpkin patch. The experiences will change with the seasons. "I really enjoy the joy flowers bring to others," said Lisa. "I enjoy the peace I get from watering and pulling weeds and watching things grow. I enjoy the gifts that God has given me and the surprises he provides me daily.”

he buzzing flutter of hummingbird wings calls Mary K. Gardner to her backyard feeders. The tiny magical flappers are what started her journey into birding more than a decade ago. With its diversity of habitats – from piney woods to short-grass prairie with mountains, valleys, rivers and coastline in between – Texas is a birder’s paradise, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. Texas is ground zero for birders, especially since it lies under the Central Flyway and draws in an abundance of migrants in both spring and fall. Today Mary Kay enjoys hundreds of species of birds, not only in her yard, but also around the country. She loves to photograph them and to learn new ways to enhance the habitat she has created at her Hamilton home. She provides a fresh water source and feed including black oil sunflower seed as well as a mix of shelled sunflower seed with millet and safflower. She changes the nectar in her hummingbird feeders every three or four days to prevent mold. “Hummingbirds have feathers in their throats, and the mold will kill them,” she explains. In winter, she provides nyjer seed for the finches and nesting boxes for wrens, Blacked-crested Titmouse and Carolina
Chickadees. She makes fresh suet of lard, peanut butter, oatmeal, corn meal, flour and dried mealworms and plants specific flowers to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, something she learned as part of Hamilton’s Master Gardener program. Black-chinned and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds frequent this area, and sometimes the Rufous has also been spotted, but only during migration. The Rufous is fearless and known for chasing other birds and rodents from their favorite nectar feeders and flowers. “They are very orange,” Mary Kay says. “The first time I saw one was in 2007.” In winter, a Sharp-shinned Hawk terrorizes other birds in the oak trees in Mary Kay’s back yard. It is stealthy and zooms onto the porch, scaring American Goldfinch in their drab winter coats as well as Lesser Goldfinches and an occasional Spotted Towhee. In spring and summer, the Eastern Bluebird with its fussy chirping “tu-a-wee” return to the nesting boxes and the Mourning, Whitewinged and Inca dove coo softly while they feast on sunflower seeds in and under the feeders. Warblers, sparrows and Killdeer sing their high-pitched ditties while the Red-bellied Woodpecker “chuts” and digs with its beak for insects under the tree bark. Birds in Mary Kay's Yard Baby Barn Owls
Red-shouldered Hawk babies
birders love to hear and photograph Hamilton’s hundreds of species of birds. “One time, Sandy Thomas, Debbi and I were gathering rocks on the Leon and a Barn Owl flew out of a deer stand,” Mary Kay says. “We climbed up, and there was a nest. “We watched those baby Barn Owls grow up. They were incredibly precious. “I’ve seen 10 species of owls, and I love hawks, especially the Red-shouldered Hawk,” which she and Debbi watched on Darrell Wright’s place. She and Debbi also have attended birding festivals in southeast Arizona where famed bird guide Wezil Walraven is known for his tours and sightings of hummingbirds, owls and other winged creatures. “The first year Debbi and I went, we were armed with our Canon Rebel cameras with zooms and felt ready,” Mary Kay says. “But there we saw everyone had gigantic cameras on tripods. By year three we had upgraded.” A good camera, a good pair of binoculars and a good field guide are really the only pieces of equipment a birder needs, she says. While in Arizona the first time, Mary Kay and Debbi were invited to go “owling.” Using night-vision goggles, Walraven called in a Whiskered Screech Owl, a Western Screech Owl and an Elf Owl, all to within 15 feet of his guests. “He knows every bird sound and call and doesn’t have to see birds to know what they are,” she says.

Sharp-shinned Hawk
“I was amazed. From then on, I was interested in much more than hummingbirds. I love my back yard, but the experiences with experts really got me started in birding.” Mary Kay has become a regional expert herself, and Texas Parks and Wildlife has called upon her to try to find rare species in the Hamilton area. “I just love being outside with nature,” Debbi says. “The challenge of the hunt, learning the traits of each bird… it’s calming to me. It’s justifiable time to sit and be still and quiet. “Most birders have a calm camaraderie that’s enjoyable,” she says. “Whether a person is a birder or not, they can take a field guide and go most anywhere, grab a shady spot and sit, trek the river, along the county roads, through the trail from the park to the football field… No matter where you are, there are birds to see.” To illustrate her point, Debbi says she was in a parking lot at Hamilton Healthcare System and heard an ear-piercing whistle. “I started looking around, and a pair of Whistling ducks landed on top of the (Solutions Behavioral Health) clinic.” The best time to go birding is early morning, even pre-dawn, she says. “Mary Kay and I have been known to sit on a stump with binoculars for hours waiting to hear or see a special bird.”

Fresh from the Farm Hamilton Farmers Market By Kymbirlee Jeschke hat started as a kind of pop-up stand has become a permanent fixture in Hamilton providing local homegrown produce, fresh lunches and baked goods, bedding plants and so much more. Jaime and Cathy Littlejohn of Gustine opened Hamilton Farmers Market on the corner of East Main and South Bouldin in 2015. The Littlejohns work with local farmers both large and small to carry homegrown produce. The Market also carries farm raised beef, pork and lamb. Hamilton Farmers Market is the only local distributor of Pedersons Natural Pork products. A refrigerated case stays stocked with bacon and sausages. In the freezer, the market stocks local rancher Tommy Fuqua’s beef and lamb products from Texas Lamb and Goat, owned and operated by Justin Caraway. A hot new commodity is Volleman milk straight from the dairy in Gustine. Sold in returnable glass bottles, the milk comes in whole, 2 percent, chocolate and strawberry. It is flying off the shelves! “We try to have produce as local as possible when it’s in season,” said Cathy. What many patrons may not realize is that the Littejohns grow most of what they sell. Jaime raises produce on 550 acres in Gustine including watermelons, cantaloupe, Israel melons, tomatoes, squash, okra, peppers, onions and sometimes eggplant. With the addition of a kitchen, The Market expanded to include fresh salads, wraps, and sandwiches year-round. Fresh-baked bread, cookies and Texas sheet cake are staples at The Market. Homemade soups and hot lunch specials roll out of The Market kitchen when the weather cools. That’s when Jackie Christian returns with take-and-bake casseroles. While The Market always stocks nuts from Durham Pecan Company in Comanche, fall brings local pecans from Sean McNeely Farms in Lamkin. “I love the pumpkin patch in the fall and filling the store with flowers in the spring,” said Cathy. “It’s fun to be able to sell things that bring smiles to people’s faces. We all need more of that.”

Celebrating 100 Years of Serv American Legion Cunningham Post #222 merican Legion Cunningham Post 222 celebrates 100 years of serving the Hamilton community on October 15. The post was named after Bernard Cunnningham who was killed in France on June 12, 1918 while serving his country in World War I. Cunningham Post #222 is an active post in Hamilton County. On Memorial Day each year members host a presentation at the Hamilton County Historical Museum and read the names of county service members lost in armed conflict. They also place flags on the graves of Hamilton County military personnel that day. On Veteran’s Day, the post carries on the annual tradition of the anvil shoot. This tradition started in 1918 as a celebration of the end of hostilities in World War I and now is done in honor of those who served and continue to serve our country defending our way of life,
our cherished freedoms. The shoot begins at 5 a.m. behind the Legion hall and continues until everyone who wants to shoot the anvil has done so or until the gun powder runs out. The first anvil shoot was the blacksmith’s way of alerting the town to the end of World War I. Each year, the American Legion sends a Hamilton girl and boy to Girls and Boys State. They also sponsor the Girl Scout Troop that meets monthly at the American Legion hall. Any honorably discharged Hamilton County veteran can become a member of the American Legion Post #222. The post meets on the second Monday of the month at the American Legion Hall north of Hamilton on Highway 281. Need a flag? The American Legion sells 3x5 American flags made in the USA. Texas, service, Blue Star and thin blue line flags are also available.

Charles Johnson, MD, Shelly Lengefeld, PA, and Robbye Lengefeld, MD, are Hamilton natives practicing at Hamilton Healthcare System.
Charles, Dawn, Emma and Colter Johnson
A Decade of Caring
Hamilton native comes home to practice By Maria Weaver amilton’s Dr. Charles Johnson will soon celebrate 10 years of caring for folks in his hometown, continuing a legacy of service to the community that began with his great-great grandparents. “My grandparents, greatgrandparents and even great-greatgrandparents were all in Hamilton County,” he says. “It’s a pretty neat thing down the line to see that they’ve served lots of roles in the county and city. “Their legacy lives on, and I hope to fit in there as well. I see their names on plaques around town and know that’s where I come from.” Charles was just three years old when his father John Brian Johnson died of leukemia. The impact of that life-changing event was one of many reasons he grew up to pursue a medical career. “We all have experiences we go through when we decide our career
path,” he says. “There were experiences along the way. You see how you react to a situation, and if you’re drawn to it, you know it’s for you, and if it scares you, it’s not.” Another turning point in his life that led him to medicine was the loss of his friend Chandler Craig when they were in high school. “Chandler was a good friend,” Charles says. “I played football with him.” Chandler, the brother of Hamilton’s Dr. Shalor Craig and son of Dr. Bill and Karen Craig, died as a result of a football injury when he was a junior in high school. “To see all that he went through definitely influenced me being a doctor,” he says. With a “great” stepdad and “awesome” mom, Charles was nurtured by them and his hometown as he grew into a young man. In addition to football, he played basketball and ran track and participated in One Act Play and UIL. “And I also hit the books,” he says. “I
made good grades.” His grades were so good that he was accepted into medical school straight out of high school through the Partnership for Primary Care at Texas A&M University. Charles was one of eight chosen for the program where the participants commit to practicing in a small town. He was one of three who completed the program and the only one who followed through by practicing in a small town. At Hamilton’s Family Practice Rural Health Clinic, in addition to Dr. Johnson, Dr. Randy Lee, Dr. Robbye Lengefeld, Dr. Craig and Dr. Tim Rudolph are HHS alumni, as is Physician’s Assistant Shelly Lengefeld, and Dr. Kristen Stegemoller is from nearby Goldthwaite and has family in Pottsville. Charles looked up to Hamilton’s doctors as a student at HHS. “It was always in the back of my mind that I would come home,” he says. “Dr. Lee and Dr. (Jerry) Jenkins were

here, and I had known Dr. (Ping) Tan for a long time. The way they handled themselves and were pillars of the community. Their interest in science. I worked with Dr. Lee doing some shadowing, and they all inspired me to follow that path. “I love science and helping people, so it was a natural fit for me.” Charles could well have chosen any medical specialty, but he likes the pace and variety of Family Medicine. “I have broad interests in all aspects of my life,” he says. “Family Medicine was definitely best for me because I would get bored doing the same thing over and over. “The people make it rewarding,” he says. “To see when you’ve really helped someone, how much it means to them and seeing the difference in their lives. It’s very rewarding for me.” Charles and wife Dawn have two children, Colter and Emma, who also are athletic, creative and get good grades. If one or both decide to go into medicine, Charles says he will be happy for them. “They haven’t said anything about it, and I’m not pushing them, but they could be good doctors,” he says. And if they chose to come back to their hometown, so much the better. They would be carrying on a long family legacy.

Watch for the newly remodeled and expanded Hamilton Public Library to open this fall.
A New Chapter Hamilton Public Library expansion he Hamilton Public Library began a new chapter in its story last year with the groundbreaking for a $1.5 million expansion and renovation project that will include a community room, genealogy library, audiovideo recording studio and the latest in technology. Community support caused the dream to become reality for a group that met just three years ago to “dream big” of a new library for Hamilton. “We are so pleased with the level of support our community has shown,” said HPL Director Nancy Diaz. “We would not be where we are without the generosity of our donors and the matching fund grant,” said Library Board President Mike Lovell. Talk of expansion began with a donation in 2014 from the Hamilton County Genealogy Society, founded by Nancy Hengst, of the genealogy archives. “That gave us the spark for this project,” said Diaz. In addition to enlarging the genealogy space, the library’s
expansion and remodel will offer a versatile floor plan that will allow for evolving future needs. “We are not just a book repository,” she said. “We also want to provide programming for our community’s wants and needs. You would have to drive to a big city library to find some of the services we will offer through Ground breaking this expansion.” in late September. Over the last three years, programming for children has resulted in exponential growth at the library. “We have to have space for books and programs to meet these needs,” said Diaz. “The Hamilton County Abstract Children’s Room will meet these needs while the Chandler Craig Youth Center will give much needed space to grow services and programs geared to tweens and teens.” Pouring the slab With the expansion’s features, the library looks forward to in early March. adding programs like author talks, training classes and webinars, even lock-ins. “This is a huge vision for our Installing solar community,” said Diaz. “It’s a panels. dream come true.”

atch the spirit of life in Hamilton at a Bulldog home game - football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, cross country - and see the youth of our community excel or bundle up and head to the Jayson Harris Pavilion in January to watch them show the fruits of their labor with the projects and animals at the Hamilton County Youth Fair. Our students don’t just excel in extracurricular activities. Classified as a 2A district, Hamilton Independent School District is a Texas accredited school district serving approximately 850 students in grades Pre-k through 12. There are three campuses: Ann Whitney Elementary (grades pre-k though 5), Hamilton Junior High School (grades 6-8) and Hamilton High School (grades 9-12). Hamilton ISD is Hamilton’s second largest employer with a staff of 125. From pre-k through high school, Hamilton Independent School District educates tomorrow’s leaders in classrooms that are technologically advanced, creative and
innovative. Building relationships and celebrating success drives the faculty and students to excellence. Hard work and integrity teach them skills to use throughout their lives. “We are very proud of what our staff and students are able to accomplish,” said Superintendent Clay Tarpley. Hamilton High School offers AP, dual credit tracks of study and six industry-based certifications, which include cosmetology, welding, Certified Nursing Assistant, aviation, phlebotomy, EKG and sign language. Upon graduation students completing these tracks are prepared to enter the workforce with the required certification for their desired vocations. The certification programs are open to all schools in Hamilton County. “The program is amazing,” said 2020 Jonesboro High School graduate and licensed cosmetologist Avery Finstad. “There should be more programs like this in more schools. It is a great opportunity and it costs less. For a lot of kids and families, this makes sense.”
griculture is big business in Hamilton County to the tune of more than $62 million. According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, a quarter of the population of Hamilton County are agriculture producers and there are 1,163 farms on 483,812 acres. Hay tops the list of crops with more than 30,000 acres of hay reported in 2017. Pecans come in second as a top crop for Hamilton County, which ranks 13 in the state for pecan production. Other top crops include oats, wheat and sorghum. While cotton was once king in the county in the 1800s, it began to decline in the 1920s. The last operating gin in Hamilton, Smith and Jones Gin, shut down on January 18, 1989 at 3:57 p.m. Erwin Moore of Iredell grew the last 30 bales of cotton ginned in Hamilton County. Last year, a group of farmers experimented with cotton and were pleased with the results. David Melde of Aleman, a fourth generation cotton grower, harvested 200 acres of cotton and he wasn’t alone. Melde estimated that about 600 acres were planted in cotton last year. “We averaged 1 ¼ bales per acre,” said Melde. “Some of the benefits of cotton is that wild hogs don’t bother it and it is fairly drought tolerant,” he said. Only time will tell if cotton will rise again. Until then, cattle is king is Hamilton County with more than 66,000 head reported on the most recent census. Sheep and goats are also raised extensively.

Pederson’s Natural Farms
amilton is home to one of the largest and most innovative all-natural pork suppliers in the nation. This is the setting for the story of Pederson’s Natural Farms - and it’s one heck of a story. There’s the fires (yes, plural), there’s truck driving fiascos, science, and so much bacon. Red bacon. Pink Bacon. Purple Bacon. There’s all-nighters and weekends sacrificed for the betterment of bacon. There’s a five-ingredient bacon that’s defined as much by what isn’t in it as what is. It’s a no added sugar, no hormones, no added nitrates or nitrites, no antibiotic, vegetarian fed, humanely raised, revolutionizethe-market bacon. It’s about products that people put their lives into, and it’s a story about how two local cowboys and a lot of folks that shared their vision and work ethic have taken a small regional company and transformed it into a national competitor. It’s about blessings, a bit of luck, and taking the good you’ve been given and working it into something even better. Pederson’s Natural Farms hangs its hat on quality at any cost, and that dedication to excellence has continuously propelled the company into new markets and mediums. From humble beginnings in 1992,
the company has grown from just two employees to 92 employees. This year alone, Pederson’s will produce five million pounds of bacon! That equates to 83.5 million slices of bacon, and, when placed end to end, that spans 13,500 miles! It’s enough bacon to go across the United States about five times. Whew! That’s a lot of bacon! And it’s right here in Hamilton, Texas. Though Pederson’s is famous for bacon, they’ve followed that up with a robust line of No Sugar Added hams, sausages, dogs, and deli meat. All their products are humanely raised, made without the use of artificial ingredients or artificial preservatives, nitrate and nitrite free, MSG free, gluten free, and soy free. Additionally, Pederson’s offers products that are Non GMO Project Verified, organic, Whole30 Approved, and paleo and keto friendly. This is the story of Pederson’s Natural Farms, where the best is made better. This is a story about saying good riddance to the status quo, getting up after getting knocked down, and shaking up an industry that’d been asleep for too long. This is the story of a small town Texas company making a serious impact nationally and even internationally! Pederson’s is proud to call Hamilton home.
