The Cover Photo
Taken by Tony Carosello, the image is his interpretation of the corner of Gutenberg and 1st Street. It represents the properties of Hermannhoff including lodging, winery, distillery, Hermann Farm, and all that goes with a great visit to Hermann.
German culture, art, history, wineries, antique shops, award winning bratwursts, distilleries, gift stores, historical sites and museums.
Maybe you’d like the Katy Trail, breweries, trolley rides, delicious restaurants, historical churches and more. There is something to delight every visitor and Hermann welcomes you with open arms.
Festivals are all the rage, and you may find yourself dancing to a polka, jamming with rock n roll or enjoying a parade down main street. Welcome all! Come back soon and come back often.
Jim and Betty Dierberg Hermannhoff Farm OwnersLion’s Club Kettlecorn
Not far from the Trolley’s base of operations, over at Hermann Wurst Haus, several members of a Lions Club crew spent Saturday and Sunday staffing a new trailer that housed all the necessary gear for kettlekorn operations. That setup has a new presence for the month just to Wurst Haus’s east side, on Gutenberg Street. Ray Haeffner was the admitted instigator of the Hermann Lions Club kettlekorn project. He had some telling observations of the club’s modifications to selling the craved snack. “This is a lot fancier,” Haeffner said of the trailer and related cornpopping equipment. “We were kind of crude in the beginning.” Haeffner helped get Lions’ kettlekorn off on a good foot several decades ago, and the popularity has remained strong in the community and with visitors. The previous operation relied on a cast iron kettle, while this time the club is using a stainless-steel container that turns out to be faster in preparing the food. “This one works great,” said Haeffner, a 40-year Lion, of the new kettle.
F ellow Lion Dave Fagerness was also on hand this weekend to help with the new trailer’s introduction. Fagerness was one of the key members to help make the transformations in time for the 2022 Oktoberfest. Mike Sloan, of Wurst Haus, is among those in the club who helped everyone settle on the new site. “We’d like to think the product sells itself,” he said of kettlekorn. Fagerness also said the new location for the Lions will make a major difference in sales. The sorting bin for the kettlekorn is now waist high and leads to a more efficient bagging for customers, according to Fagerness. Former club president Ron Kraettli was another Lion who was instrumental in preparing for the project a year ago. Fagerness said he’s pleased with the first weekend, and is expecting strong weekends ahead for them.
Octoberfest Time is Trolley Time
It’s Oktoberfest always peaks the second and third weekends of the month, so the earlier weekend serves as a starter for businesses and tourism to perhaps refine their approaches for those bigger turnouts -- or to just keep doing what they’ve been doing that works so well.
Aaron Cruts, of Hermann Trolley, told the Advertiser-Courier, the town’s newspaper, he’s enthused about the first weekend. “Everything went good,” he said. “We had beautiful weather.” Cruts said the conditions were typical for the opening weekend of Oktoberfest, and that he had all nine of the Hermann Trolley hard at work delivering passengers to the various venues.
The wineries are popular, with large numbers of guests. And many of those Oktoberfest visitors are return customers, so to speak, for Cruts and other Hermann businesses. “They kind of have a little plan,” he said of the tourists, pointing out that many of the out-of-towners decide to book in April or May their upcoming trips’ accommodations. The same is true for local campers.
The people who come to Hermann at this time of year are noting their impressions of changes occur- ring in the city and can tell the difference from their last visit. “A lot of people think it’s nice we’re getting new businesses,” said Cruts. He said the visitors also exclaim that Hermann is beautiful and that they’re glad to see the progress coming alive in the community. Cruts possibly gave the most appropriate description of what this month really means for Hermann’s overall year. “Oktoberfest is kind of its own little monster,” he said. But we love it!

GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
With the fast approaching of Thanksgiving, Hermann and the surrounding area are starting to put on a holiday face for some very special events.
The Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce will once again sponsor the 2021 Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. The contest is open to all ages in three divisions: individual children through age 12, children’s groups through age 12, and adultindividual or groups.
The trees will be donated to local nursing homes and Hermann Area District Hospital for display during the holidays. Contact the chamber office at 486-2313 for more information.
A kickoff to the holidays will also feature the Sounds of Starkenburg, with two concerts hosted by the historic St. Martin’s Church Museum. The free public concerts, always held the Saturday after Thanksgiving..
The pipe organ at St. Martin’s is the oldest Pfeffer Pipe Organ west of the Mississippi River.
Artists will perform music of the Advent and Christmas seasons. There will also be sing-alongs.
A soup supper will be held between the concerts, next door at Valentine Hall. Sandwiches and desserts will be offered along with the soup.
Free-donations will be accepted for the museum. Doors open one hour prior to each concert, and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The church museum and hall are handicapped accessible.
St. Martin’s Church Museum and Valentine Hall are located northwest of Rhineland, at Starkenburg. From the intersection of Missouri highways 94 and 19, just north of Hermann, turn west toward Rhineland. One mile west of Rhineland, take Missouri Route P north for two miles to Starkenburg.

WHAT IS ZYDECO’S?
What is Zydeco? Who is Zydeco? How do you travel to Zydeco? Is Zydeco a person, place, or thing? A noun or an adverb?
Z ydeco is a genre of music, that evolved in Louisiana by the French Creole. It typically involves an accordion, washboards (yes, like your grandma used to use), guitars and drums.
Z ydeco is also the newest restaurant in Hermann Missouri. Located on 5th street next to the Missouri Bank, the newly built venue specializes in Cajun Creole food. This reporter happened to stop by while they were testing recipes for American raised catfish and boneless fried chicken thighs. They were C’est magnifique, (magnificent).
Z ydeco will offer a Cajun menu, a small kid’s menu and robust libations.
Z ydeco will happily accommodate your large party or get together. Perfect for holiday parties, Bachelorette parties or family reunions.
A s the French say, Laissez les bon temps rouler, ( Let the good times roll!)
Hermann fell on hard times during World War I, especially as the city suffered from anti-German sentiment provoked by the war. Making matters worse was the enactment of Prohibition in 1919, which sent the city reeling into the Great Depression a full decade before the rest of the country. Fortunately, economic diversity and community strength allowed the town to survive these challenges and remain a prosperous community as Missouri entered the 1920s. A side benefit also occurred as there was simply no money to modernize old buildings, which is one of the reasons so many continue to stand today.

Village Dog Park
Agroup of citizens in Hermann have worked hard over the last few years hoping to start a dog park for citizens and visitors and last year they succeeded! Hermann now has a beautiful dog park on ¾ of an acre next to Village Market on Hwy 100. Money donated over the years provided fencing, tools for assembly, gravel, water and ongoing expenses including lawn maintenance, insurance, water bills and
upkeep. Benefits of the park include a fenced-in area where dogs can run and socialize off-leash legally and safely; a separate area for small dogs; benches, waste receptacles, dog litter bags, water stations and more!
The park also encourages responsible dog ownership by promoting licensing, vaccination and cleanup. The park was formed and is currently supported solely by volunteers. Items such as insurance, supplies,
maintenance and upkeep are only possible through donations. All funds collected go toward expenses to keep the park open, safe and an enjoyable place to visit whether you’ve got 2 legs or 4 legs.
Your donation will help keep the park viable for years to come. For information on how to donate, please contact Martha Hermosillo at CFHer-mannArea@ CFOzarks.org.

Missouri was the site of more Civil War battles and engagements than any other state besides Virginia and Tennessee. In 1861, the year the war began, nearly 45 percent of the fighting and most, if not all of the casualties occurred in this state. In addition, Missouri provided nearly 200,000 troops to both sides of the war effort, which represented more soldiers in proportion to its population than any other state.

No Detail Is Too Small
Volunteers at the Iron Spike Model Train Museum, Washington, MO, spend countless hours constructing and maintaining the displays contained inside the 10,000 sq. ft. facility. They carefully research the projects, reproducing each detail with accuracy. Their efforts establish the museum as a leader in all aspects of the hobby. Train scales from G to TY are on display and running throughout the museum.
Some modelers work to reproduce existing rural or city scenes. Volunteers at Iron Spike create fantasy towns containing carnivals, demolition derbies, a working cattle ranch, power plants, saw mills, a drive in movie and firefighters putting out a charred home.
Several of the volunteers have worked to create videos of the layouts within the museum. Videos run that have been shot from the inside of the locomotive as the train moves down the track. Other videos show trains passing through the detailed scenery.
One of our high school volunteers added sound effects to the different displays. He worked with two of his high school riends completing this wonderful addition. We are proud to welcome the next generation model train hobbyist. From the entrance, the main train hall appears to be a vast, sparkling city. Upon closer examination, provided by the unique peninsula design of the museum, the displays come to life. Volunteers love to tell tall tales about imagined events at different locations throughout the layouts.

Younger visitors become entranced in the children’s room where hands-on train operation is the rule of the day. They can push wooden trains over bridges and through towns, and have a chance to be an engineer and run their own trains.

Experience the Katy
Welcome to Katy Trail State Park, the longest developed railtrail in the country. Katy Trail State Park attracts people of all ages and interests. Whether you are a bicyclist, walker, equestrian, nature lover or history buff, the trail offers opportunities for recreation, a place to enjoy nature and an avenue to discover the past.
The park, built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT or Katy), is 240 miles long and runs between Clinton and Machens with 26 trailheads and four fully restored railroad depots along the way. The section of trail between Cooper County and St. Charles County has
been designated as an official segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Katy Trail is also part of the American Discovery Trail, has been designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail and was added to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame in 2008.
Trail users have the opportunity to wind through some of the most scenic areas of the state with the majority of the trail closely following
the Missouri River. The park also takes users through a slice of rural history as it meanders through the small towns that once thrived along the railroad corridor and reflect the rich heritage of Missouri. Information at the trailheads makes a ride or walk on the Katy not only a healthy adventure, but also an educational one.
Experience beauty and versatility! Bring your bike, your horse or your buddy on the Katy.
Discovering New Haven, Missouri will bring you into a small, quaint, and historic riverfront town that is enriched and deep in generational tradition. It sits in the heart of an emerging wine country of the midwest. Surrounded by the soft, rolling hills and beautiful, majestic trees; where their leaves can hold the deep lush greenery during the summer. In the Fall, the colors of the leaves change into the colors of yellow, red, and orange that are as vast as a morning sunrise or sunset.
Over the years, the Missouri river was used, primarily, for commercial purposes for the survival of riverfront towns. As highways and railroads developed, it changed the purposes of the river But one thing has remained true, the river has provided a resource for family and friends to gather on their boats or to enjoy the banks of the river
Our historic downtown region has seen many changes throughout the years and this year is no exception. There has been a new, revitalizing facelift with new streets and sidewalks. With a mix of established and new businesses; as well as events being added back through the New Haven Area Chamber of Commerce that will hopefully draw the locals and tourists alike.
Navigating and sight-seeing through the breathtaking landscape of our historically small riverfront town, will leave you nothing but wanting to discover more of what New Haven has to offer.

Defiance Ridge
Rooted in the rolling hills of Historic Missouri Wine Country, our 42-acre property boasts a vineyard, tranquil lake and lush garden landscape. Breathtaking views of the sweeping Missouri River Valley are captured year-round from the terraces and veranda surrounding our historic farmhouse. Defiance Ridge Vineyards can be your first and last stop in wine country, as we are easily accessible from Hwy 94 as you enter the Missouri Wine Country corridor.
Our atmosphere reflects our combined passions for wine, vineyardto-table cuisine, unique events, warm hospitality and an authentic celebration of people and place. Defiance Ridge is open year-round, 7 days a week. We serve lunch daily, offer dinner on Thursday evenings, and always have live music on Saturdays & Sundays. Other signature events include monthly five-course Farmhouse Dinners, estate tours and tastings, and artisan markets. We invite you to visit us to enjoy a glass of one of our wide range of Missouri and west coast varietals, treat yourself to our seasonal artisan cuisine, or simply take in the surroundings of our beautiful grounds and view.
Just as our wine and food tells the story of this land, private events at Defiance Ridge can tell your story and reflect your personality and vision. With accommodations for a small or large gathering and full catering menu, we can help you craft the perfect event that your guests will never forget. Planning a wedding, your next private party, or corporate event? We’ve got you covered for any occasion!
