Welcome to Walterboro
Established in 1826, Walterboro offers the best of South Carolina — rich history, untouched nature, economic potential and small-town charm.
The City of Walterboro was founded by Paul and Jacob Walter in 1783 as a summer retreat from their rice plantations, and locals agree that’s still how we view our historic settlement today. Walterboro is known as The Front Porch of the Lowcountry, boasting Southern charms, history, culture and hospitality.
Let the red rocking chair be your beacon and come rock with us.
Spend your time in Walterboro learning about Lowcountry wildlife and nature in the recently opened Walterboro Wildlife Center and follow it up with a walk in the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary. Meander through various shops in our historic downtown or take in some history at the Colleton Museum. Find art and culture abounding at the South Carolina Artisans Center, a historic Victorian-style cottage hosting art from over 300 South Carolinian artists. The Front Porch is brimming with nature, culture and history.
While we pride ourselves on small-town charm and
history, there is also much to offer in the way of economic development. Walterboro is a place where small businesses grow and succeed on their own merit. Our thriving downtown and growing commercial corridor create an abundance of jobs for those across all stages of life.
Being located in the heart of the Lowcountry makes traveling convenient. Walterboro is just a quick hour from Charleston, Beaufort, Summerville, Columbia and Savannah, right off of I-95, and within an hour of two international airports. There’s big city access from small town living. You can truly have your cake and eat it too.
So come, stay a day, stay a lifetime. We’re saving you a seat on The Front Porch of the Lowcountry.
“We are that boutique real estate team that strives to offer a higher level of service above and beyond what is expected.” We may be a small office but we deliver big results. We are known as Colleton’s #1 Hometown Realtors for a reason!”

Genesis Healthcare Leading the Way
Genesis Healthcare, Inc. has cemented itself as a leader in the fight to improve the health of those in rural communities by increasing their access to healthcare.
The medical facility is located near the town of Walterboro, South Carolina and will deliver medical, dental, optometry, pharmaceutical services, and other vital services to support patients. Genesis will also be able to obtain medical, dental, optometry, and pharmacy equipment necessary to provide highquality and affordable healthcare services.
The project will impact the community by providing a longterm investment for high-quality and affordable healthcare, employment/educational opportunities, and growth (economically and socially) for the members of Colleton County. The facility will directly offer medical services to all members of the communities in need of affordable high-quality healthcare for the next several decades.
As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Genesis receives a combination of state and federal funding. This mixed funding formula allows Genesis to reduce the number of South Carolinians living in healthcare deserts by purposefully investing in rural health. They are currently in the process of expanding their Walterboro facility to house all care services in one building and they will be adding imaging, case management, and a full pharmacy, by building a new state of the art facility.
“What we’ve found is that when you make access as easy as possible and affordable for patients, they’re more likely to follow through with their care,” a representative from Genesis Healthcare said. “When you can go to one facility and see your doctor, get your imaging or lab work done, and take your prescriptions home in the same visit, it is not only convenient but aids in patient compliance. In turn, our community health improves.”
The driving force behind all their work is deep-rooted in community involvement–working with the people in an area to build a facility that caters to their needs instead of trying a one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare. The Genesis team also understands that whole-person healthcare goes far beyond the exam room.
At the start of every school year, Genesis partners with local schools to provide backpacks full of supplies for children. Just a few weeks ago, in August, they stuffed over 400 backpacks. Genesis has also hosted and sponsored health awareness events and tailored workshops for various community groups. Teamwork is not only a corporate motto.
Genesis knows quality care comes from quality healthcare providers, which means helping the next generation. An annual contribution is provided to the University of South Carolina’s Salkehatchie campus to provide scholarships for nursing students.
The new facility will allow GHC to expand upon the current services it provides at its location in Walterboro, SC. The expanded services would include behavioral health care, case management services, a full-service laboratory, a full-service pharmacy with a walk-up window, and a specialty pharmacy among others.
The face of Genesis Healthcare in Walterboro is Mr. Howard Nettles, Director of Community Outreach and Engagement. Mr. Nettles is looking forward to establishing positive relationships with Walterboro and Colleton County in the effort to provide comprehensive quality healthcare in our area.

INDUSTRY
Pomega Energy Storage Technologies
Pomega Energy Storage Technologies a Virginia-based company, subsidiary of Turkey’s Kontrolmatik Technologies, is building a battery manufacturing plant in Colleton County, South Carolina, that is expected to begin producing product sometime in 2024. The company will manufacture Lithium-ion battery cells and battery energy storage systems. Bahadir Yetki, CEO-USA for Kontrolmatik Technologies and Pomega Energy Storage Technologies, discussed his company’s U.S. plans, and more recently and about how his group is navigating the U.S. and global markets for battery energy storage. “In advance of our factory construction being complete, we made the decision to begin manufacturing cells for our residential systems in an existing facility close to the construction site. We will therefore have two facilities in Colleton County. The first facility, for our residential systems, will create between 50-100 jobs, while our BESS (battery energy storage system) factory will create 575 new jobs. Pomega in South Carolina will manufacture complete battery energy storage systems—meaning everything from the lithium-ion battery cell, the modules, the racks, and the turnkey
BESS. As I mentioned before, we will also manufacture residential battery storage systems from a dedicated facility, including the batteries and the enclosures. We are unique in the sense that we are manufacturing our own lithium-ion cells, where most energy storage companies source cells from abroad”. The systems will be ideal solutions for the broad array of high-power applications that require reliable electricity to assure the operations. The 650,000 sq ft. facility will begin production by Q3 of 2024.

Lowcountry Regional Airport
A gateway into the Lowcountry.
Guests wanting to travel to many of South Carolina’s resort plantations, beach communities, cities and ports have a convenient way to get to all of these destinations – without the hassle of flying into larger, commercial airports. The Lowcountry Regional Airport is located in Walterboro, and it is the largest general aviation airport in the Palmetto State. Local Colleton County leaders describe it as an aeronautical gateway to Charleston, Columbia, Beaufort, Hilton Head and Savannah.
The Lowcountry Regional Airport is a hub for pilots who are sightseeing and who need a rest between schedules. It is also an ideal landing location for busy corporate travelers who are coming to the area as part of the entire Lowcountry’s bustling industrial and tourism scene.
The airport boasts two runways, each ranging from approximately 5,700 feet to 6,000 feet in length and is 100 feet wide.
The airport itself features a luxurious common area, a pilots’ lounge for pilots and visitors, restrooms, shower facilities, and a quiet room.
The airport also has a commercial kitchen with an ice maker and freezers for catered meals. The airport also provides full service for corporate and personal jets coming into the airport, including fuel at highly-competitive rates.

South Carolina Artisans Center
Handmade treasures from selected artists always delight at South Carolina’s official folk art retail center.
You could hunt all over the state for authentic handcrafted art representing South Carolina’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Or you could pop over to the South Carolina Artisans Center, to explore the handcrafted art by handpicked artists; See, Touch, Smell, Taste, and Shop Art.
Located in Walterboro just minutes from I-95, the state’s official folk art and craft center is a one-stop showcase for fine handmade crafts of every imaginable variety and media, from Gullah sweetgrass baskets to Southern face jugs, a craft tradition started in Edgefield by african slaves who worked on plantations as potters.
Along with the indigenous folk art created using centuries-old craft techniques, the collection also includes contemporary crafts, large installation sculptures and two-dimensional art.
Fittingly, the nonprofit gallery is housed in a restored eight-room Victorian cottage built in the late 1800s in Walterboro’s historic district. Inside you’ll find pottery, paintings, jewelry, quilts, mobiles, vases and furnishings.
The art collection features the work of more than 200 South Carolina
master artisans selected in a two-stage juried process that includes an evaluation by independent professional jurors. Diversity not only represents the population of South Carolina but the offerings at the Center.
Despite the high quality of the wares, you can find Art at every price point.
To be sure, there are plenty of pricier items that have been among the collection, including a $3,500 sweetgrass basket made by a well-known Gullah artist using a unique coiling technique handed down from her West African ancestors.
One of the most impressive and expensive items in the center is a $58,000 one-of-a-kind wooden canoe handcrafted by a local artist who lives just outside town. As much works of art as functional boats, these canoes are made from exotic and indigenous woods, fetching as much as $160,000 for a commissioned tandem.
As its mission, the South Carolina Artisans Center showcases and markets handcrafted artwork of the state’s leading artists, while ensuring that art inspired by tradition is protected and nurtured; a gallery that speaks to the unique talents of handpicked South Carolina artists.

The Big Red Rocking Chair
You’ve seen them all over town. The red rocking chairs. They are the symbol of the Town of Walterboro and its hospitality. What people may not know, is there is a Big Red Rocking chair. It is located off Highway 15 at the end of Detreville Street and Live Oak Cemetery and sits at the access of the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary. To give an idea of exactly how big “big” is, the Big Red Rocking Chair stands 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The current chair is the second chair to be built in the space. The first chair was brought to the community by Leadership Colleton 2016, TCTC Construction Technology Class of 2017. Over time the weather took its’ toll, and the chair needed to be replaced. The current Big Red Rocking Chair was built courtesy of Walterboro Parks Department employees Nickol Henslee and Joe Miller. The project went smoothly with Mr. Joe and Ms. Nikki working after hours for a couple of months. Both commented they enjoyed doing something for the city and like the feeling of accomplishment they felt with the recognition of their work for the city. The Big Red Rocking Chair has gained “international” fame. People from as far away as Canada have had their photo taken in the chair. So come enjoy Walterboro’s Big Red Rocking Chair. Take a picture, sit a spell, stay awhile. For more information go to walterborosc.org.
