Briley Swain
Story
Briley Swain has a rare condition in her right leg. It affects that leg only, from the top of her thigh to her toes. She was diagnosed at 10 months of age at a hospital in Dallas. When she was 2 months old, I noticed she had bruising that was not going away on her right calf muscle. At 4 months I noticed pea size “knots” under her skin. After discussing it with her pediatrician, we decided to swap which direction we laid her on her changing table in case it was just from holding that leg when changing her. However, this didn't resolve the problem. After bringing her condition to her pediatrician’s attention regularly and after many trips to the hospital for ultrasounds of her right calf muscle, it wasn't until about a week before she turned 10 months old that PRMC told me that what they were seeing was "like a hematoma, but not a hematoma." Her knots were referred to as tumor-like, but they weren't concerned. The following week I received a call from her pediatrician to say that he had made an appointment at Children's for Briley, and we were to report to the leukemia department. Our hearts
stopped. he first a ointment at hildren's was not great. It was emotional. We saw no less than 10 specialists throughout the day. They brought in other doctors and told us they were “intrigued” by what was happening with Briley. They had never seen anything quite like it. It was a revolving door that day. Our main doctor let us know that she wasn't sure what it was. No one
was, but they wanted to rule out a rare cancer of the muscle. It was the only thing they could fathom her symptoms being connected to. I lost count of how many medical professionals we saw that week.
They asked us to come back Oct. 31 in 2010 (our first child s first Halloween) for an MRI. It was traumatic for her, and she did not do well coming out of

I continued to incorporate things the lymphedema specialist taught me. However, every year brought on new issues. By the time Briley was 5, my husband and I joked about what that year would bring. It always seemed that every autumn brought on new obstacles for Briley. She was so excited when she started kindergarten. However, it wasn't very long before we noticed an issue. Briley's swelling had not only increased quite a bit but due to all the swelling in her right leg, she was compensating
with her left. She began losing range of motion in her right ankle/foot. Her tumors were growing in size (ping-pong ball size now) and becoming more painful. When I reached out on my Facebook page again, the same client had another idea. She was able to get us in contact with a medical equipment company to order Briley a lymphatic pump. The sleeve of the pump fit her from toe to hip. The smallest sleeve they had been a little large on her, but it worked. She began wearing the pump every day for a minimum of an hour. This began to help with the swelling. I was also able to order her compression leggings at this age too, but they were still a little large on her and weren't quite doing their job. While the pump began to help, the damage was done, and she wasn't regaining any range of motion. She began physical therapy and continued for months. After grown male physical therapists tried to force her ankle/foot into a 90-degree angle, but being met with a brick wall, we realized we
needed something stronger to intervene and reverse this issue. Our physical therapist put us in contact with an orthopedist at Children's to work with her. I was really anxious about this visit, so a family friend came with us. I'm so thankful she did because I left in tears. He said that while he was willing to attempt Botox (which he let me know was going to be extremely painful for her in that leg), he didn't want to get my hopes up as he said he doubted it was going to help. He said the next step would be surgical intervention. I remember being absolutely terrified about surgery. Little did I know this was just the beginning. He gave me the name and number of one of two surgeons in the U.S. that could perform a minimal invasive surgery on her leg called selective percutaneous myofascial lengthening surgery. One was in Boston and the other was in the Galveston/League City area. This was something that was often performed on children with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury. Her tendons had tightened up so much from the swelling that her Achilles tendon needed to be released. This surgery would involve puncturing her Achilles tendons in multiple areas and then casting her legs and forcing them to 90 degrees for several weeks, while she walked on the casts. This was the next
great battle we fought. I filled out paperwork, I had X-rays taken and sent in for the Texas surgeon, I sent email after email and called weekly. With Briley's disorder being so rare, the assistant was convinced that we were wasting our time and that this was too extreme for what Briley was suffering from. After two or three months of calling and begging to get in with the doctor, they finally scheduled a date to meet with us. After spending only three minutes with the surgeon, he sighed and let us know that not only did Briley need the surgery, but it had gone on long enough that she had compensated with her left leg (which is not affected by her disorder at all) and she now needed both Achilles released at the same time. Casts on both legs at the same time... and learning to walk on two casts right after surgery.
She had the surgery a few weeks later. The recovery from the surgery involved getting her to walk again immediately. The recovery team struggled. The surgeon let me know that Briley was going to struggle with in recovery. They told us that they were thankful they could even get it that far as they did and worried, they might not even be able to reach the 90 degree point that was needed. The recovery was as difficult as we expected. It's painful having your legs forced 90 degrees after months of tightening as not only your Achilles tendon begins to tighten up. So, all muscles are being stretched at the same time.

she was struggling with pain and mobility was the smart thing to do. I questioned her at the end of SEVERAL seasons, asking if she needed or wanted to take a break for a year, the answer was always a resounding, “No.” Finally, a couple of years ago one or our physicians’ assistants looked me in the eye and told me “her being in dance is the catalyst to what has allowed her to maintain as m ch fle ibility mobility and strength as she has. It was the best thing you could have done for her.” It was such a huge reassurance for me, and I was even prouder of Briley as she was the one who never wanted to give up.
To this day there is still no name for exactly what Briley has. While many years ago I connected with a mom in Kentucky whose daughter (at the time) had what we thought was that Briley had, over the years, Briley’s issues have changed drastically involving so many more intricate issues that we no longer consider the disorders remotely the same.
The symptoms she has had since the beginning up until now are swelling in her right leg, tumors in her leg that come and go, chronic pain in the right leg, loss of muscle tone, spasticity issues, a leg length discrepancy, right foot is two sizes smaller than her left foot, knee growing at angle and balance issues among others. Some of the procedures she has are those that a child with cerebral palsy or a traumatic brain injury would have. But Briley has neither. She does have a neurologist we see yearly to insure nothing new arises in that area, we mainly see our orthopedic surgeon multiple times a year.
consistent new issues will end with her childhood growth spurts, her doctors cannot guarantee that. It will continue to be a “wait and see” plan through the rest of her life as her situation is unlike anything else. We are not sure what the future holds. In earlier years we had a pretty scary outlook on the possibility of her losing her leg from certain complications. Thankfully with her being so active still, the chances of that are not an immediate concern.
being in dance is the catalyst to what has allowed her to maintain as much flexibility, mobility and strength
She has had seven procedures during three surgeries. She will have to have at least one more surgery in the future to lengthen her right leg. Our hopes are that she won't have to have any more surgeries other than the leg lengthening, but we have no way of knowing. While we also hope that the
The immediate future outlook for her will be the length lengthening surgery, which we most recently discussed at a checkup a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, this will be her most extensive surgery to date, also requiring her to be out of commission for a minimum of nine months, but more commonly, a ll year his is definitely something we are not looking forward to, but we know it needs to happen. It is just a matter of when. For the time being, we work on regaining as much strength in that leg as possible and continuing to push that knee straight. For now, Scottish Rite has released Briley and her only requirements per her surgeon is that she stay regular in her dance classes in Rockwall, as her physical therapist and surgeon have all agreed has been much more powerful in her recovery than her physical therapy appointments there. They agree they have seen a tremendous change in her abilities since beginning there with her fle ibility and strength he also wears a c stom A and a knee brace while at home at times and each night while she sleeps, to help keep her muscles from tightening up too much at night.
Briley is now looking forward to a new season with her dance company and beginning work on her solo for the upcoming season.u

Chances are that this vegetarian stew will satisfy any meaty craving. The method for this vegetarian recipe is based on beef bourguignon, the classic French beef and red wine stew -- minus the beef. Mushrooms handily step in as the main ingredient. Not only are mushrooms notorious for their meaty consistency and heft, but they contain glutamate, an amino acid that provides savory, rich umami qualities to food. True, they do not provide the same amount of protein as meat, but they do have a higher protein content than most vegetables, and they carry a treasure trove of nutrients. Mushrooms are a rich so rce o fiber vitamins and antioxidants, and they are fat- and carbohydrate-free.
For this stew, take advantage of the mushroom season and choose a variety when available. Shiitake, portobello and brown cremini mushrooms are a great starting oint hoose those with firm ca s and store them in open paper bags in the refrigerator to allow them to breathe. To clean mushrooms, rub with a damp paper towel and use a brush to take away any dirt. You can run them under a trickle of water, if needed, but don't douse or submerge them, because they will act like sponges and absorb the liquid. Trim the ends and thickly slice or halve the shiitake and cremini mushrooms. To clean the portobellos, trim the stems and scoop away the gills. Cut the portobellos in bite-size chunks or thickly slice. u

Crusader of Centy
Igrew up playing the Nintendo Entertainment System and the N64 as a kid, so I never got to experience very many Sega games unless I was visiting my cousins over the summer. They didn't have a huge plethora of Sega games either, just Sonic and Toy Story. Now that Nintendo has added Sega Genesis to the online membership, I am happily exploring all the titles I missed out on. Over the last month, I have gotten to play Comix Zone, Earthworm Jim, and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but today I'm going to talk about Crusader of Centy. I was completely surprised by how bright and vibrant this game is because the cover art does not give off that impression at all. Crusader of Centy is Sega's version of Zelda and is way more than just a knockoff of Zelda. It holds its own in a way I never expected and I couldn't wait to share my experience with all my wonderful readers.
Story
Release: 1994
Platform: Sega Genesis, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership
Genre: RPG, Action-Adventure
Developer: Nextech
Publisher: Sega, Atlus Software
The story starts off with a cutscene explaining that the world was once covered in darkness until one day the light appeared, sending all the monsters dwelling in the darkness into hiding. Over time, the monsters come out and start rampaging through the world. The main character's name is Corona, but yovu are given the option to name your character whatever you want (I always name my characters MEG), thus starting the game. It's your 14th birthday today, and your mother is passing down your late father's sword and shield. You have a small birthday party with your friends, and one of them says they want to go see the hero Amon receive his sword from the King, and they all rush out of the house, leaving you to follow along. Upon entering the castle, you are met with a short scene in which the king gives Amon his sword, and then yo are instr cted to go to the a flesia training gro nd o must collect three medals—bronze, silver, and gold—and present them to the king in order to receive your own fancy sword just like Amon. The storyline is linear and the more I play the game, the more this dark undertone of pain and unfairness is unearthed. Corona does lose his ability to speak to human and gains the ability to speak with animals and monsters early on in the game. I don’t really want to spoil too much, and haven t finished the game yet so have no real concl sion b t at the moment I am starting to kind of feel bad for the monsters.
IN 1994 SEGA PUBLISHED RAGNACëNTY IN JAPAN. THE GAME WAS DEVELOPED BY NEXTECH AND WAS A SUCCESS! RAGNACëNTY QUICKLY MADE IT'S WAY TO EUROPE, THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO SOLEIL. IN MARCH OF 1995 ATLUS PUBLISHED THE GAME IN THE U.S. CHANGING THE TITLE TO CRUSADER OF CENTY.

Visuals and Gameplay
The beauty of this game is noticeable as soon as you walk out of your home for the first time. The flowers are dancing in the wind, the animals are so cute, and there are fun little quirks in the dialogue of every character and animal you speak with. The animations are bouncy and fluid. The animation while swinging your sword is a bit slow. It took a bit of getting used to but was in no way a hinderance for me. One of the unique aspects of this game is that you can use your analog stick to move your character around, giving you an 8-point range of motion versus the old-school Zelda games that only gave you four directions to move while using the d-pad. Being a true RPG, this game shows its progression by unlocking skills obtained by befriending different animals throughout your gameplay experience. Some animals specifically help you in battle, while others help you traverse the world, such as obtaining the ability to jump or run faster. There are 16 animals to unlock, and you are allowed to use two at a time. You will equip the animals as if they were items; once equipped, they will walk or float directly behind you. Cycling through your animal companions is very easy and can be done at any moment during game play.
Character designs were a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a generic-looking game, but it instead delivered unique and fun characters. One of my favorite aspects was the diversity of the monsters and bosses I had to fight throughout the game. I truly never knew what to expect when entering a new biome or zone on the map. The puzzles are also challenging, but they aren't so difficult that I felt like giving up. Certain animals that you befriend help you with different puzzles that you run into while playing.
If I had to give it one critique, it would be that the game doesn't naturally lead the player through the world. There are many parts where I was exploring aimlessly and accidentally stumbled upon where I needed to be. You simply must talk to everyone to get anywhere. It was not a real issue for me; it was more annoying than frustrating. In this regard, the Zelda games do outshine Crusader of Centy. If comparing it directly to Link to the Past, Zelda's game is just a little bit easier to navigate and figure out, that's all.
