The Schoolfield Village hosted its first First Fridays event of the year on September 1. There were several vendors, including PeaceLoveJoy, Handcrafts by Ruby, War On Books, At the Cabin, Main Street Art Collective, and VisitSoSi. The Ga-te Shoken food truck served desirable food, whilst DJ Heath Haynes served up some oldtime classics on his vinyl record player and audio system. Family and friends enjoyed their time eating, shopping, and spending time together at the First Fridays event. A raffle was held that included cash prizes to local Schoolfield venues such as Foxglove, The Schoolfield Restaurant, Linden Rose Boutique, and Frank’s. The prizes were drawn at 6:30 p.m.
This year is the 85th anniversary of the 1938 Log Cabin Playhouse located next to the building, formerly known as the
by Ceilidh HicksSchoolfield Museum at 917 West Main Street in Danville. Robert S. Kimpleton built the playhouse for the kindergarten, which was later turned into a museum. It was open to the public for viewing and visiting during the event from 5 to 8 p.m.
Several original pieces of history from the Schoolfield Museum Collection were on display to view as well. There are suspicions from local historians that the playhouse may have been built using leftover material from the Schoolfield Employment Office. Visitors were able to enjoy free refreshments inside of the Museum and young children could play in the playhouse as well.
The First Fridays events will be held in the first week of every month until December. The next event will be held on Friday, October 6, at 917 West Main Street in Danville. •
Those who came to view the flamethrowers in action were clearly warned: Go left for warm, forward for hot, or right for melt–and they meant it, too. The heat was intense even while standing toward the back of the crowd.
Tiny Town Golf is an 18-hole miniature golf course for community and family, located in the Danville area, providing each customer with a memorable experience each time they may visit.
Bishop Darrell and Sylvia Bruce recently purchased the business a little over two weeks ago.
“We are trying to help build family relationships,” stated Bruce. They are family-oriented, stress-free, smoke-free, and violence-free, and are looking to provide a unique, bonding experience to all guests.
Tiny Town Golf will be undergoing several projects in the future that are focused on the improvement of the business. They plan on providing putt-putt classes, group sessions, and collaborations. Tiny Town Golf is now open every day of the week.
“We are working on upgrading the area, allowing more people with disabilities to play, so we can also give them a
fun time as well,” said Bruce.
They also plan on upgrading the paint on the different hole structures, fences, and other amenities within the course.
The Danville area does not have many places to host events that people can go to and have family fun. Most of the miniature golf courses have closed down in surrounding areas, therefore Tiny Town Golf has the ability to become a central point for families and friends to come together and enjoy their miniature golf experience. Many customers have said that Tiny Town Golf provides the warmest welcome they could have asked for.
The miniature golf course not only offers invigorating puttputt games, but it also offers refreshments and an overall relaxing and fun experience for all customers. The different holes on this course are unique and eye-catching to many. Some of the special holes include the Pinball, Lighthouse,
Windmill, Barn, and Dogleg holes. The course features relaxing water features with waterfalls, one of which is also the new home to a few brightly colored Koi fish. There is also a gathering area in the middle of the course with picnic tables under a shady area for families and friends to eat and relax during their miniature golf experience. Tiny Town Golf also offers the service of hosting parties for those who wish to have a good time with the people they love, and no stress.
Many heartwarming memories have been made at Tiny Town Golf through the years.
“There was a young man that came here a few days ago,
and he had planned a party and some events happened where most of the people didn’t show up because of family issues, so we invited some people to come and sing “Happy Birthday” to him. I think it made his day, he was able to play golf, and everybody played with him,” stated Bruce.
Tiny Town Golf is located at 643 Arnett Boulevard in Danville. They are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, they are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sundays, they are open from 3 to 8 p.m.
Inquiries can be made by phone or email at (434) 797-1090 or tinytowngolfva@gmail.com. •

Afun and popular element hidden among the old structures and spotty streetlight in Danville’s Riverside area has become a place of notoriety. Owners Ethan and Julie Brown opened their roomy brewery in May of 2014 (2 Witches recently celebrated their 9-year anniversary). They have hosted live improv, area bands, a Whiffle Ball league for grown-ups, comedians, youth workshops, open mic night, public meetings, and, of course, Karaoke Night the first Friday of each month. They also host special events and can provide locally owned food trucks with a plethora of varieties of classic and international cuisine. Their staff is close-knit and friendly, and the parking is ample. It is a family-owned and operated establishment. Before I forget, you can check in with 2W on their Facebook page and check “events” and “posts” for any adjustments to the schedule.
So here I am standing at 209 Trade Street in the cloudy, damp moonlight, my car grumbling behind me, attempting to open the beautiful, Oz-like gate bearing the “2 Witches” token. Once you walk up the deck and see all the happy people inside enjoying the music, brews and association, you feel like you’re heading into a private club, where people know you and the bartenders have your favorite drink ready. And whether your new or not local, it only takes a few smiles and greetings to assimilate into this spirited, joyful crowd.
As I entered the establishment with my family, I was literally shocked by all of the aesthetic remodeling Ethan, Julie and the other associates had done. I have not been to the 2W brewery since briefly before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Browns have kept busy. A dividing wall has always been in place making for a small back room for meetings to be held, as well as housing the men’s and
women’s rest rooms, so they have now opened up the full floor plan. The larger, high-tech-laden stage is in the center of the venue. The lighting, table coordination and customer service are a boon to 2W’s already sterling reputation. These new, well-planned changes are welcome. So kudos 2 Witches on not only a chic, modish joint for families (including well-behaved children most of whom were there for Karaoke, it seemed), but a clean and well-managed establishment for locals and those visiting Southern Virginia also. I have myself recommended 2WB to others for parties and hangout time. Now let’s talk about their products for a moment. 2W makes their own wines using local vineyards and offer a large variety of local reds, whites and others for a good price, or you can try it by the glass. 2 Witches famous home-made Sangria is brewed with fresh fruit right in it. The brewery even offers a number of
home-made flavored seltzers. Last but not least is the 2 Witches selection of beers, of which they offer ten choices daily and rotate the flavors on a calendar. I like to get the sampler-4 four-ounce brews in any flavor. Last time we sampled a coffee flavored beer, a chocolatey offering, a creamsicle inspired brew, and the 2W classic “McLean’s Milk Stout.” You can order a small glass or a full pint of this classic dark brew with 4.7% alcohol per serving. Other varieties include “Double, Double, Toil & Trouble,” “TYEDYE,” “Trainwreck S’mores Porter,” and even “Grapeful Dead”. All brews, even specialties, are available on tap.
The Browns maintain strict regulations to keep their one-of-a-kind brewery a place with a calm and upbeat atmosphere. They meticulously check for valid ID’s and underage wannabe drinkers. They even provide a unique schedule compared to many bars and pubs in the area. Tuesday and Wednesday are closed for maintenance. Monday and Thursday they are open from 5-9PM. Friday and Saturday are the late nights, closing at 10PM. And for those of you who like to enjoy a brew on Sunday, they’re open from 2-7PM.
On Fridays- starting at 7PM- 2 Witches hosts “Wicked Karaoke” So while you drink your beverage of choice, Matt “Matty D” Doss (DJ for WWDN “The Dan” Radio station in Danville) works his high-tech magic as eager volunteers grace the stage and sing every sort of music you can possibly imagine-classics, romantic messages to others, songs from their youth. Matty D . has just about anything you feel like belting out to a crowd. People of all ages are present-laughing and cheering on even if a young person has picked a song that patrons are unfamiliar with, or if you’re not in the best tune-they still support these brave troubadours and guileless romantics that grace the stage for our entertainment. As you socialize, you hear the sounds of Springsteen’s “Born To Run” and a duet of Heart’s “Alone.”
As a whole, 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Co. has a pleasant, fun-filled atmosphere that people can enjoy even if they don’t want the alcohol experience. There are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages as well. So be sure to check them out-listen with a friend, sing, dance, or simply sit and enjoy the experience. I’ll see you next month, my Fellow Bohemians. •

Arestaurant that has served Gretna citizens and visitors alike for generations, is available for purchase.
Jack’s Quick Snack, a beloved local eatery that has been serving the Gretna community and beyond for over 50 years, is undergoing a change of ownership while remaining dedicated to its enduring legacy. Shirley Shelton, who co-founded the establishment with her late husband Jack Shelton, recently shared insights about the decision.
The decision to transition ownership follows the passing of Jack Shelton in March of this year. Shirley, at 83, expressed her readiness to retire after years of dedicated service. She emphasized that the establishment had become an integral part of her life over the 52 years they ran it. “I’ve lived here pretty much for 52 years. I’m definitely grateful for the experience,” she said.
The Sheltons opened the restaurant in 1967 as a hot dog trailer donning the name “Jack’s Quick Snack: World’s Smallest Diner” as a means to supplement their income while working at Klopman Mills. The restaurant quickly expanded into a small building on South Shelton Street to sell short-order food and ice cream. The restaurant’s legacy has been built on quality and affordability. Shirley highlighted their commitment to serving high-quality food at reasonable prices. Over the years, the menu expanded to include a variety of offerings, including hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, ice cream, chicken, barbecue, and fish. The resilience of Jack’s
Quick Snack is exemplified by its ability to weather challenges, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The establishment’s design, primarily focused on takeout, proved advantageous during these times.
Since Jack’s passing, Shirley has continued to operate the restaurant but now, she said, she is ready to see it taken over by new owners. While she expressed mixed emotions about the transition, she fondly remembered the interactions with her staff over the years. With a smile, she reminisced about the numerous employees who have contributed to the establishment’s success. While the change in ownership marks the end of an era, the legacy of Jack’s Quick Snack is set to continue as it embarks on a new chapter.
The sale is being handled by Chris Davies, a representative from Lauren Bell Real Estate, who said trade secrets such as recipes will also be included in the sale.
Davies emphasized that Jack’s Quick Snack would not be closing down during this transition. In fact, the intention is to keep the business operational under new ownership. The establishment holds a special place in the community, not only in Gretna but also in the surrounding area, making it a vital and cherished institution.
The news of the change in ownership has sparked various reactions from loyal customers who expressed sadness at the potential closure online, but Jack’s Quick Snack will continue to operate and is actively seeking new owners.
As the community watches the transition unfold, the hope remains that a new owner will step forward to embrace Jack’s Quick Snack and uphold its rich history for generations to come.
Anyone interested in purchasing the thriving business should contact Realtor Chris Davies at 434-221-9777. •

The Veggie Shack, founded by Robin and Clarence Emerson in 2018, is a well-loved shop to purchase fresh local vegetables and beautiful flowers.
“We raise everything here on the farm, everything we sell, we raise on the farm,” said Emerson. They started The Veggie Shack in 2018 for their grandchildren. They would bring their selection of vegetables to the farmers market, but that wasn’t the best way for them to go about their small business. They opened up a small building to customers on their farm, which was later expanded into a larger building. Word of mouth and going to the farmers market was the primary source of new visitors for The Veggie Shack. They became involved with advertising on social media as well, which has given them a lot of traffic. Robin and Clarence greatly appreciate their new and repeat customers.
The Veggie Shack sells homegrown vegetables and flowers to everyone. They own a large, beautiful sunflower field down a long path past their farm. They don’t use any products on their crops that may be harmful to the vegetables. “We aren’t organic,
but we don’t use anything that I would be scared to use. I could pick it and eat it off the vine,” stated Emerson. The types of vegetables they offer range from several kinds of squash to tomatoes, or most vegetables that can be found in the garden.
Customers can expect a warm and welcoming experience and atmosphere with every visit to The Veggie Shack. They stay busy during the week, and customers love coming back after they’ve had a taste of their fresh produce. The Veggie Shack is family-oriented, Christian-based, and operates through honesty and family. “Our goal is to make sure that people have good, fresh, safe vegetables to enjoy,” stated Emerson.
The Veggie Shack is located at 333 Emerson Road, Dry Fork, VA 24549. They are open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers can see announcements about closed dates or farm-related posts on their Facebook page, The Veggie Shack - Emerson Road Family Farms. For inquiries, customers can contact The Veggie Shack by email at iampotterylady@ gmail.com. •
Story & Photos by Ceilidh HicksOnce every summer month, Chatham, Virginia’s Main Street becomes home to nearly 100 vintage cars for the Virginia-Carolina Classic Chevy Club’s Cruise-in. This popular event is always well attended and creates opportunities for attendees to enjoy viewing fully restored historical automobiles as well as local food vendors and more.
Corvette Racing kept its GTD Pro championship hopes alive with a victory in Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at Virginia International Raceway.
In the GTD Pro division, an undercut strategy by the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R GTD on the final pit stop took the lead over the then-leading VasserSullivan Lexus RC F GT3 of Ben Barnicoat and put Jordan Taylor, codriver with Antonio Garcia for Corvette racing, at the head of the field.
Barnicoat driving the #14 Lexus would go on to finish the race in second place. Third place in the Pro division was collected by the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R
In the GTD division, the top three places were taken by
Paul Miller Racing’s Madison Snow in the #1 BMW M4 GT3. Number two on the podium was the Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 driven by Robby Foley and taking 3rd place was Philip Ellis driving Winward Racing’s Mercedes-AMC GT3
The race featured two full course cautions, the first for a heavy crash by David Brule in the No. 92 Porsche GT3, followed by brake issues for Misha Goikhberg, who crashed the No. 78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2.
The Weathertech Sportscar Championship has two remaining events in the 2023 season. The series will move on to Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sept. 15-17 and will have its finale at Road Atlanta’s Motul Petit Le Mans. •
