About The Festival This year we celebrate the 21st Annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival! This family-fun festival is held every year on the third weekend in October at J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill, Georgia. People from all over the southeast come to sample southern hospitality while enjoying some of the best seafood around. The festival features continuous entertainment on two stages with local and national entertainment. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the carnival midway, shoppers will enjoy perusing the hand-made arts and crafts and business booths, while the foodies will delight in the wide variety of delicious fare. The Seafood Festival began in 1985 at the Kilkenny Fisherman’s Co-op as a small, community fair that offered local seafood and a venue for local non-profit agencies to fundraise for their organizations. In the beginning, the founders of the Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival were all volunteers, and very few in numbers. What they produced was a fun, family-oriented event, that also showed Richmond Hill as a great place to live. In 1998, then-Mayor Richard Davis approached the Richmond Hill/Bryan County Chamber of Commerce to bring the Seafood Festival to Richmond Hill. J. F. Gregory Park had just been built, and was basically just a large tract of land with a road circling around it. Linda Barker was

Festival chairperson at the time, and remained in that capacity for three years. This was a new event and they really didn’t know what to expect. The event featured live music and seafood vendors and drew people from outside the city. The headline entertainment was The O’Kaysions, and approximately 8,500 people turned out for the festivities. Over the next few years, changes were made to include a carnival, Saturday events and nationally known musical acts. Today, we are still mostly an all-volunteer committee of approximately 300 people. The Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival has grown to a festival of 35,000 attendees featuring some of the best coastal seafood you can find, cooked in a variety of ways, premiere desserts, and who can forget the kettle corn and peach cobbler cooked by the Boy Scouts! We have over 50 arts and crafts booths showing their wares, nonprofit organizations that serve Richmond Hill/Bryan County, business booth row showcasing numerous businesses around town, and oh, the entertainers…. Past entertainers include Drivin’ & Cryin’, Collective Soul, Little River Band, Lou Gramm & John Waite, Charlie Daniels, Survivor, Eddie Money, The Blues Brothers, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Swingin’ Medallions, Gregg Allman & Friends, The Original Tams, The O’Kaysions, Blues Traveler, the Dave Matthews Band, Joe Nichols, and 38 Special.

David Lee Murphy

Million-selling singer-songwriter David Lee Murphy had no plans to make a new record until a country superstar made them for him. “I’ve been friends and written songs with Kenny (Chesney) for years,” Murphy reflects. “I sent him some songs for one of his albums a couple of years ago, and he called me up. He goes, ‘Man, you need to be making a record. I could produce it with Buddy Cannon, and I think people would love it.’ It’s hard to say no to Kenny Chesney when he comes up with an idea like that.” Murphy, whose songs “Dust on the Bottle and “Party Crowd” continue to be staples at country radio, could have easily filled the album with hits he’s written for Chesney (“’Til It’s Gone,” “Living in Fast Forward,” “Live a Little”), Jason Aldean (“Big Green Tractor,” “The Only Way I Know How”), Thompson Square (GRAMMYnominated “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not”), Jake Owen (“Anywhere With You”), or Blake Shelton (“The More I Drink”). But, Chesney had other ideas. “Kenny was really influential in the songs that we picked,” says Murphy. “Over the course of the next year or so, we got together, talked about it and picked out songs. I wanted to record songs of mine that people haven’t heard before, that are new. We wanted to make the kind of album that you would listen to if you were camping or out on a lake, fishing. Or sitting anywhere, just having a good time.” Titled No Zip Code, the new David Lee Murphy collection has already yielded a hit single and duet with Chesney, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.” The collection also contains such good-time, party-hearty anthems as “Get Go,” “Haywire” and “That’s Alright.”

The Marshall Tucker Band

Whenever you drop that proverbial quarter into the virtual jukebox of songs that always manage to reach down and touch your soul the exact moment you cue them up, you inevitably find certain artists have a deeper resonance than others when it comes to providing the soundtrack that mirrors the highs and lows of your own life. The Marshall Tucker Band is one such group that continues to have a profound level of impact on successive generations of listeners who’ve been searchin’ for a rainbow and found it perfectly represented by this tried-and-true Southern institution for over five decades. “I’ve been in tune with how music can make you feel, right from when I was first in the crib,” observes lead vocalist and bandleader Doug Gray, who’s been fronting the MTB since the very beginning. “I was born with that. And I realized it early on, back when I was a little kid and my mom and dad encouraged me to get up there and sing whatever song came on the jukebox. It got to the point where people were listening to me more than what was on the jukebox! There’s a certain frequency I found I could share, whether I was in front of five people or 20,000 people. And once that frequency is there, everybody will listen.” The Marshall Tucker Band came together as a young, hungry, and quite driven six-piece outfit in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1972, having duly baptized themselves with the name of a blind piano tuner after they found it inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space — and they’ve been in tune with tearing it up on live stages both big and small all across the globe ever since. Plus, the band’s mighty music catalog, consisting of more than 20 studio albums and a score of live releases, has racked up multi-platinum album sales many times over in its wake. A typically rich MTB setlist is bubbling over with a healthy dose of indelible hits like the heartfelt singalong “Heard It in a Love Song,” the insistent pleading of “Can’t You See” (the signature tune of MTB’s late co-founding lead guitarist and then-principal songwriter Toy Caldwell), the testifying travelogue warning of “Fire on the Mountain,” the wanderlust gallop of “Long Hard Ride,” and the unquenchable yearning pitch of “Ramblin’,” to name but a few. (See, we can hear you singing along to all of them in your head right now as you read this.)

Lyn Avenue

Named from Georgia-Country.com as one of the newest acts from Georgia to “make it big” on the Nashville scene Lyn Avenue is a Country/Americana act bringing you catchy, compelling stories with true southern charm. Driven by rich vocals, electrified leads, and boot stomping rhythms, there is always a story to be told with Lyn Avenue, and you can guarantee you’ll be wanting to sing along. For the last 3 years, Lyn Avenue has been a finalist in the Georgia Country Awards for Band of the Year. Such acclaim has facilitated them opening for Jerrod Neimann, Parmalee, Chris Janson, Easton Corbin, Lonestar, and more.

IN RECENT YEARS, OPIOID OVERDOSES AMONG GEORGIANS HAS

INCREASED BY 117%. It’s a myth that prescription opioids are completely safe because a doctor prescribes them. The Dose of Reality is that in Georgia, hospitals are devoting approximately $1.3 million an hour to treat patients from opioid misuse or overdoses. And everyone is at risk of addiction, especially young people ages 12-25. Working together, we can prevent prescription opioid misuse in Georgia. Since 4 out 5 heroin addicts start with prescription opioids, we can also help to curb the statewide heroin epidemic. Go to DoseofRealityGA.org to learn what you can do to help.
