Six of Jackson’s current employees began working at the facility when it opened in 1986. “I grew up here,” said Tim Owens, the vice president of finance. Before joining the Jackson Warewashing team, he worked at another facility in the area. He said he wanted to stay close to home. Owens said that growing up in the area, he had driven by the facility a lot in his life, but it wasn’t until he did a facility tour with the company that he was really impressed by the work they do. “It has, for a lack of a better word, been fun for me because we have gotten to grow the company,” said Owens. “It is important for me to have these jobs in the area because I am from here. I want multiple generations to be able to work here – have jobs and have opportunities – if they want to stay in the area.” Like Owens, Evans grew up in Barbourville. In fact, the duo has worked together since 1994. “Across all spectrums of our business here, I have grown up with people in every level here,” said Evans. “When I say grown up, I mean from the time we were children to now, so I think we have a common relatable experience growing up in Appalachia and knowing what the community is about.” He said when he first joined the team at Jackson, it was a unique situation. “The opportunity just kind of dropped into my lap. Jackson was looking for someone that had a certain skill set to be able to run the factory because the present VP of operations had designs on retiring soon,” said Evans. “I had that skill set and was available at the time, so it kind of fell into my lap.” Reminiscing on his beginnings with Jackson, Evans explained that early on in life he and his wife had made the decision that they would raise their kids in Knox County. “I had driven by here 10,000 times in my lifetime because I am from Barbourville,” said Evans. “After I had taken the plant tour, I had always visualized what Jackson looked like inside. I always thought it was this dark, dirty place that nobody wanted to be, and I don’t know why. But, when I walked around the place it was well lit, well organized, floors were painted, it seemed like everyone

knew what they were going to do. I understood the process immediately just walking through.” “I was impressed with the plant tour I was given,” said Evans. “I knew right away I want to work here.” In conjunction with the tour, the fact that he already knew people at the facility and it felt like home left Evans knowing that Jackson was a place where he could contribute to his community. Evans explained that being local is one reason that he feels it is so important for the business to be successful. “Until you can see the entire footprint of a business in the community, you don’t realize what an effect that they have,” said Evans. Jackson’s president is not originally from Knox County, but he said that he and his family now refer to the area as home. Jonathan Akin, Jackson’s president, said he came to the company because he was looking for a job. “I am 51 and have only worked for three companies in my career,” said Akin. “When I go somewhere, I want it to be somewhere that I am going to stay for a long time.” He explained that it’s not the products that make Jackson special. It is the people. “Jackson’s is different than any other company that I have worked for or been associated with. Jackson’s is a company of people that truly care about each other and about this area,” said Akin. “They want to be here and they want this company to be here. That is why they come to work and do such a great job and deliver such great products.” “To me, that is the secret to Jackson,” said Akin. “Immediately I was hooked and wanted to be a part of that.” Akin said that since taking a job with Jackson, he has put two children through Corbin High School. “We plan to be here for a long time because this is home now,” he said. While the company doesn’t have a target for the number of employees it would like to reach, it said its workforce expansion will grow as the production demand increases. The company has experienced significant growth over the last several years. Positions required for the factory span the entire spectrum of skill levels. here is a saying in medicine that, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and Dr. Travis Coleman and the team at Cumberland Falls Family Dentistry focus on that in the world of dental care. Coleman, a native of Louisiana, took over the former Combs Family Dentistry practice in 2019. “Good dentistry is about much more than simply addressing issues as they arise,” staff members say. “Good dentistry focuses on prevention.” Coleman graduated from Louisiana State University before going on to dental school. In addition to attending school, Coleman spent more than seven years in the U.S. Air Force, both as a pilot and instructor pilot. “Between his Air Force career and starting dental school, he taught high school chemistry in south Louisiana,” staff members noted. Coleman went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the LSU School of Dentistry. Along with Coleman, the other dentist on the staff is Dr. Daniel Carter, a Keavy native. After graduating from South Laurel High School, Carter went to Western Kentucky University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 2001. Carter then moved to Lexington and went to dental school at the University of Kentucky, graduating in 2005. After practicing in Nicholasville for one year and accept-

ing a professorship at WKU, Carter became Dental Director for the Institute for Rural Health. Carter joined Cumberland Falls Family Dentistry in February. In addition to the dentists, Cumberland Falls Family Dentistry has six full-time staff members Along with preventing larger problems that require more intensive procedures, staff members noted that taking the preventative approach keeps the cost to the patient low. In addition to routine dentistry, Cumberland Falls Family Dentistry offers a variety of cosmetic procedures including: clear aligners, dental implants, dentures and smile designs. “Working together with you, we can design a treatment plan uniquely tailored to accomplish your goals and overcome any obstacles you may face,” the staff said. FIRESTONE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS

ew opportunities. That is what Firestone Industrial Products in Williamsburg will provide 250 individuals after it completes its 68,000 square-feet plant expansion. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. “About 25 years ago, I started travelling to this plant as a product design engineer working on automotive springs,” said Gabriel Asbun, group president of Integrated Business Bridgestone Americas, during the facility’s groundbreaking. “The same team here is the team that really got us full-fledged back into the automotive part. We started our first real substantial programs here at this facility.” Asbun said the investment Bridgestone is making in Firestone Industrial Products is not just about adapting to a changing market. “They’re making that investment here in Williamsburg and in this team because we believe in this team and they believe in this team,” Asbun said. At the groundbreaking, Gov. Andy Beshear also emphasized the 250 new opportunities Bridgestone’s investment in the Williamsburg plant will bring to the county. “[This] is an opportunity for 250 more families to join your team, to be a part of this great company, and to know where their next paycheck, their next meal and their next

opportunity for their kids and their kid’s kids are going to come from,” said Beshear. “One of the reasons they chose here – one of the reasons they chose us – is you. That work that you have put in everyday has not just resulted in your job but it is going to result in your friend going to have the opportunity to come here and join you.” The Williamsburg plant, which was purchased in 1988, is the only remaining U.S. Air Spring manufacturing plant. It is expected to produce more than 4.4 million airsprings in 2021. When people think of Firestone, many people think about a tire plant, said Williamsburg Plant Manager Wendy Goff, but it actually creates airsprings and airspring modules for the transportation industry. Goff explained that airsprings are like the suspension on a vehicle. They help with a better ride, evening out loads, and even help with aerodynamics because it can help raise or lower a vehicle. The expansion is expected to bring 250 or more additional jobs to the area. The jobs will be at all levels including operators, office and administration, engineering, operations management, logistics and planning. For many of the plant employees, Firestone Industrial Products in Williamsburg is somewhere they expect to re-

For instance, Stacy Pals has worked at the Williamsburg plant for 22 years. She began her career in production, where she stayed for 17 years. She was a work horse, said Pals. She wanted to stay in that role, but over the years, she started looking to progress within the company. Stacy Pals Today, Pals serves as the QA document control coordinator for the facility. When she started her career, Pals said, “I was a young kid fresh out of high school. I started when I was 19-years old, and I didn’t have a whole lot of work experience.” After serving in a temporary role, she said she was eventually hired on full-time and that decision has provided her opportunities she may not have had otherwise. When asked about what specific opportunities working for Firestone has provided Pals, her answer was simple, “All of them.” “I have been able to buy a house and raise a family,” said Pals. “My oldest girl is in college herself now, and I have been able to provide them a comfortable life that I didn’t have growing up.” Pals said working for Firestone has provided her with the reliability of knowing that she is going to have a job. While she is currently taking college classes, she said her goal is to move up within the company. “I don’t see myself leaving this place,” said Pals. “I have been here over half of my life. To me, this place is like family. I have got so many friends that I consider part of my family just because we have grown up together. We have worked together for so many years.” “Overall, this is just a really good place to work and it gives you so many opportunities,” said Pals. While Pals has been with the company for several years, Brett Mitchell has just begun his career at Firestone. At the time of the interview, Mitchell had been a team member for only four days. He said he is working in the final assembly department, which takes the products made by the rest of the plant and processes them Brett Mitchell into their final form before loading the products to be shipped. Mitchell came to the plant after working in construction. “I had been away from home for so long that I moved back home and started applying to places.

I had a couple of offers, and none of them seemed really good. I actually heard about Firestone through a family member and they told me that this big expansion was happening and I should try and apply,” said Mitchell. “When I applied, I really didn’t think that I would get it, to be honest with you, but everybody here so far has been super welcoming and very nice about it.” Mitchell said that there are already certain things he has noticed about working at the facility. The first is that the company values quality over quantity. “Every step of the way people check for quality,” said Mitchell. The second is the many benefits the company offers its employees. From health insurance to a balanced work schedule, Mitchell said that while he has held more jobs than many, he has never seen a benefits package quite like the one offered at Firestone. The third thing he mentioned was his opportunity to grow at the company. “Just the past few days, I have been talking to people, and they will tell me, ‘Oh, I was doing that two years ago and now I am in this much higher position’,” said Mitchell. “I have been here four days, and I have learned more than I did in two years at my previous job.” Mitchell described the facility as less of a plant and more like a little college campus – a community. “People just overall treat each other like they are friends rather than someone they are stuck with,” Mitchell explained. Mitchell said he would recommend Firestone to anyone looking for a long-term career. “I said career instead of job earlier because that is my intention here,” said Mitchell. “I feel like everybody that I have talked to, that is their intention too.” After just four days, Mitchell said that Firestone is somewhere he can see himself staying until he retires. Even long-term employees, who are nearing retirement, say that Firestone is still their choice for employment. Jeanie Manning has worked at the plant for 23 years and said she can almost see retirement, which she hopes to achieve once she reaches 25 years at the company. For 21 years, Manning has worked in seat springs, but she has filled other positions, such as working in auto sleeves and team lead on night shift. Jeanie Manning Manning said that she initially came to Firestone after the sewing factory she worked at in Jellico was shut down. FIRESTONE — continued on page 19

Founded in 1981 in Scott Depot, West Virginia, by Ron Foster, Foster Supply expanded to London in 2013, opening at 510 Tobacco Road, near Burley Ave. London was the third new location that Foster Supply added around that time. In 2009, the company opened a new location in Nutter Fort, West Virginia, in the northern part of the state. In addition to adding London in 2013, Foster Supply also opened a new location in Charleston, West Virginia. Foster said that London was chosen to better serve customers in southern and eastern Kentucky, and northern Tennessee. Officials noted that along with expanding its reach, London and Charleston expanded Foster Supply’s product line, adding on-site concrete mixing, which, in turn, allowed the company to move into the precast market

with items such as: parking blocks, the concrete dividing barriers that are seen along divided highways, and retaining wall blocks. Foster Supply not only produces a number of products in-house, it has also developed new products for the industry. In March 2016, it announced its new Verti-Block wall system. The system allows for stone to be placed inside a hollowedout portion of the wall for drainage. “Verti-Block has been readily accepted by architects and engineers across our region and is one of our fastest growing product lines,” Foster said, noting that the block holds the drainage rock in place to keep it from passing down and clogging the drainage pipe below. “We partner with our customers to stay on the cutting edge of products offered to site contractors providing solutions to current and future needs,” company officials stated. “Foster Supply is a leader in developing new markets for products that change the way construction sites handle a variety of problems.”

Visitors who are looking for an overnight experience have multiple options including the DuPont Lodge, cabins, cottages and/or campsites. The park has 50 campsites with electric and water hookups and a central service building with showers, and rest rooms, a grocery, and a dump station. The campground is open March through October. Dupont Lodge and the nearby cottages provide 96 guest rooms. Mounce said the rates vary depending on the time of the year and the demand. Gem mining is one of the newest attractions added at the park. Visitors may stop by the gift shop near the falls to pick up the gem mining supplies, which may then be used at the sluice outside. The gift shop offers other items as well. “In the gift shop, you can find the perfect souvenir or that special gift for a loved one in your life that will make the memory of your visit last for years to come,” Mounce said.

At the time, Firestone had just started growing in Williamsburg, Manning said, so she put in her application and was hired on as a temp for eight months before being hired on full time. “This is a good company to work for,” said Manning. “They give you a lot of benefits.
