hroughout its history, AT&T has reinvented itself time and time again to reshape the world of technology, media and telecommunications. In today’s modern culture, people are surrounded by technology, and AT&T continues to play a crucial role in making sure people in Corbin and across the country have the best there is to offer. According to AT&T Regional Director Amy Scarborough, “AT&T has a very proud his-

GRACE ON THE HILL

race on the Hill United Methodist Church is about more than just the members that come to services on Sunday. It offers multiple ministries and programs designed to reach the Tri-County community. From a food pantry and a free store to help feed the hungry and clothe the poor to sports programs, small groups and youth ministry, the church works to reach out and help the community in multiple areas. “One of the things that is a misgiving about Grace on the Hill is that when people look up and see the structure, they think, ‘Oh, my goodness!’ It is a large structure, but we are just regular people,” said Pastor Scott Wilson. “We are moms and dads who care about our kids. We are just people who want the community to be a better place. We want to serve and, of course, as Christians, we want to share the Gospel.” Grace on the Hill works with four other area churches, God’s Food Pantry out of Lexington and several area grocery outlets to provide food items for those in need.

The church distributes food from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Mondays. Wilson stated on Jan. 24, the food pantry helped 109 families. “The original intention was to provide three- or four-days-worth of food,” Wilson said noting that thanks to the help of Walmart®, Kroger®, Aldi’s® and Dollar General®, the pantry is able to provide each family with a full grocery cart of food. It is not just boxed and canned items. With the assistance of the local groceries, the pantry is able to provide produce and meat. Next to the pantry is the church’s ARK (Acts of Random Kindness) room. Wilson said the purpose of ARK is to provide those in need with clothing and household items. The items may be gently used and have been donated by members of the community or may have been donated by the Christian Appalachian Project. “Sometimes we get household items donated by family members after someone has passed away,” Wilson said noting that men’s clothing is the item that is most needed at ARK. Story and photographs on this page by Dean Manning

Winter 2022 — Strictly Business 11 Monetary donations are also welcome and accepted. “It is not just people in the Tri-County area that we help,” Wilson said. “Sometimes we will get an individual or family traveling through the area that needs food or clothes. We won’t turn anyone in need away. We will give them something.” In addition to offices and the sanctuary, the building has a gymnasium which is used as a community space and for multiple sports programs. Among the programs are indoor soccer for children ages four to six, basketball for ages five and six, and Bibles and Basketballs for men. Gus Clouse, director of youth and recreation at the church, said the church will be hosting a pinewood derby in February. “Someone donated the track to us,” Clouse said noting that participants must purchase the parts to create their derby car to enter. The cost is $5. Other sporting events at the church have included touch football, water gun wars in the summer and Nerf® gun wars and pickleball in the gym. “We set up obstacles in the gym for the Nerf® wars as part of what we call, ‘Sunday Fun Day,’” Clouse explained. On Wednesday nights, the church hosts a community meal at 5:45 p.m. followed by a Bible study. During the Christmas season, the church organized the Journey through Bethlehem in which participants set up scenes from Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth. Visitors were able to drive around the church parking lot to view the scenes. “We may do a Journey through Jerusalem at Easter,” Wilson said. Wilson and Clouse stressed that such events are open to the community, and that volunteers from the community are welcome and encouraged to assist with the food pantry, ARK and other efforts by the church to assist the community. “We have people who are not members that volunteer,” Wilson said. “We also get people from University

of the Cumberlands that come as part of the service project that students are required to complete.” Grace on the Hill is making efforts to reach youth. Youth Pastor Luke Osborne said the First Priority Ministry at area schools, including Corbin, is growing. “It is a ministry where students don’t just learn the Gospel but they share the Gospel with their peers and with other students,” Osborne said noting that First Priority has led to more than 200 salvations in the TriCounty. While the Grace on the Hill’s youth group was unable to go on a mission trip in 2020 because of COVID–19, it did do mission work locally. “We had about five houses in the area where we did everything from picking up leaves and cutting trees to other cleanup work,” Osborne said noting that the group is looking at a mission trip to aid the tornado victims in western Kentucky this summer. It is not just the youth that are involved in such ministries. Wilson noted that the church’s Reach Team has done a variety of work from providing COVID–19 masks to providing food for the staff at nearby Baptist Health Corbin. “We are always looking for opportunities or new ways to have a positive impact on our community,” Wilson said. “Our goal is that our community is a better place because we are here.” “Do not just look at what the church up on the hill is doing, but that the Tri-County community is better because the people at Grace on the Hill are having a positive impact on the community,” Wilson said. Wilson said in 2022, Grace on the Hill’s Next Step program has set a goal of reaching one percent of the Tri-County population, which equates to 677 people. “We want people to have hope for the future and understand the peace that comes in being in a relationship with Christ,” Wilson said. THE SUDS BARN

ess than a year after its grand opening, The Suds Barn in Williamsburg has expanded its selection of soaps, bath and body products, boutique and now also includes a thrift store. The Suds Barn was opened by Becky Lunsford in July 2021 after she and her now husband had spent a bit of time making soaps while being isolated during the pandemic. “When you are stuck at home all day every day, you tend to do things in bulk. When you find something you like, you really start doing it a lot. We were making soap every day,” said Lunsford. “When we started making soaps, my fiancé [now husband] and I, we just watched some videos on Youtube and stumbled across some videos about soap making,” said Lunsford. “I thought, ‘Hey, that would be something cool to try,’ and he loves the chemistry of it. He loves figuring out which oils do what and what’s good for your skin.” Lunsford said their pandemic hobby began to grow when they started giving products to friends and family to try. What she didn’t expect, was that her hobby would eventually become a brick-and-mortar store located in downtown Williamsburg. “It wasn’t like I really planned on doing it. I was doing it

on the Internet and I knew I wanted to do it, but a brickand-mortar store, you know, they are kind of on the outs because everybody can shop online,” said Lunsford. Despite her fears, she said they proceeded to work with her landlord, who she credits as being one of her biggest supporters and a guinea pig for her products, and after six months of renovations and making products, The Suds Barn officially opened. “It was really scary when we talked about it, but I thought if we could just get people to come in those people will tell their friends and family and then those people will start coming in. When we opened, I was really nervous,” said Lunsford. “The day we opened I thought, ‘What if nobody comes? It is going to be devastating.’ But, we had a huge turnout that first day and we have been steady ever since.” The store has a variety of products ranging from soaps, toilet sprays and bath bombs to clothes, Rae Dunn® products, home decor, and more. Most, if not all of which, can be personalized. The Suds Barn is not just a place for people to go buy bath products because it also includes a boutique and thrift store run by Lunsford’s friend, Jennifer Taylor. Story and photographs by Jennifer K. Perkins

Winter 2022 — Strictly Business 13

Lunsford said she and Taylor have been friends since the third grade. “When I started talking about opening the Suds Barn, she was like, ‘Hey, would you consider having a boutique in there?’,” said Lunsford. From there, Lunsford said she couldn’t run both the boutique and the soap portion and make the products, so it was decided that Taylor would run the boutique inside The Suds Barn. “Being in a small town, we were kind of like, ‘We need to have a variety of things’.” “People can come in and get a gift. You can come in and say I am going to get soap for myself and then I’ll grab some soap for somebody else, and I’ll get them a mug and I am going to get them a shirt,” said Lunsford. “We want to be very diverse. We want everyone in the town to be able to come in and find something.” Being within walking distance of the University of the Cumberlands, Lunsford said The Suds Barn offers Williamsburg top quality products. “Everything in here is top quality. I would put it up against any other bath and body place that there is in the United States.” All of the soaps have shea butter and/or mango seed butter. There are numerous soap recipes Lunsford and her husband use to create their products so that they can cater to most skin types and sensitivities. Because everything is made in-house, products can be personalized or customized for people with allergies or sensitive skin. Lunsford said that she is licensed to make the products, and her labels and kitchen are certified. Lunsford said they make new soaps daily because they let their soaps cure for 28 days before they are sold. “It has to cure for 28 days before we can sell it. Some places sell it after only three days, but to really have a good bar of soap, it has to cure, the water has to come out of it, so it will be a good, hard bar and last a long time,” said Lunsford. As their customer base has continued to grow, Lunsford and Taylor have added several new additions to the already successful business.

Changes including a thrift store, and expanded line of fragrances, shampoo bars, beard shampoo bars, and the Luxe Skin facial line have all served to further increase their revenue. When visiting the store, patrons may notice some changes to the products packaging and labels. The packaging has changed completely, said Lunsford. When the store first opened, most items were in clear packaging which made the shelves colorful, but since UV light began affecting the appearance of some of the products, many of them are now packaged using amber bottles. The labeling system has also changed. Lunsford said the logos are transitioning to become more gender neutral. Lunsford said the expansion of the stores facial skin care line, Luxe Skin, has been just another one of the several changes and additions the store has made to better serve customers. The Luxe Skin collection now includes facial cleansers, moisturizers, serums, toners, face scrubs, lip scrubs, men’s shave soap and beard brushes. The store has also added candles made from repurposed jars and cups. Lunsford said customers have donated their used glass candle jars, cups or other glassware and the shop cleans and sanitizes the items before using them to make candles. Customers who donate jars receive 15 percent off their candle purchase. Lunsford said the change came after the cost of jars began to increase. Lunsford’s husband has also begun cutting liquor bottles and uses them to create candles with scents such as mimosa and mojito. “From July until January, we have added a lot of products, and we still have more to add,” said Lunsford. Both Lunsford and Taylor credit the store’s success to the community. “When we first opened, people would come in and get something for themselves and then they would come back a few days later and get something for their friend or their family,” said Lunsford. “I think that word of mouth – where people actually used our products and really like them, they wanted everyone else to THE SUDS BARN — continued on page 22
