EXPERIENCE. PERSONAL. EXCELLENCE.

I’m often asked how we come up with the stories featured in Access. People are surprised to learn that we’re never at a loss, but rather short on space to share all those that are deserving of the at tention. But, it’s funny the ways these stories seem to find us. As a transplant, I simply don’t know the intricate de tails of all the social components of this community. However, so many long-time locals love sharing those deep-rooted stories that confirm life is indeed better than fiction. Hands down, it’s the best part of my job. For this issue in particular, I met Anna Moore at the hair salon. Hair dresser Jason Chambers introduced us and went on to tell me about her breast cancer journey as she sat in his chair. Before I knew it, Anna blew me away with her can did approach and gave me a true Steel Magnolias moment. From there a cover story was born as we laughed that Jason should have a column called “From Behind the Chair”, as he might be more in the loop than government officials. Knowing many local women adore iconic jeweler Mignon Faget and her collec tions, imagine my surprise when an email came through regarding a partnership. Elated, we flipped for the new fall collection, Neutral Ground, and noticed Cas saundra Inge Burks who graced our April cover.

Talk about synergy. When we met Kati Lovvorn the Access team swooned as she’s not only super sweet, she’s worked hard to bring a special store to Mobile. It’s women like Kati that make us want to work twice as hard to help her succeed.

From right around the corner to neighboring cit ies, this area is bursting with incredible women. And, no matter how these stories find us, we real ize it’s a privilege to share them. Enjoy!

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: MAMMOGRAMS MATTER

October is Breast Cancer Awareness

and few campaigns have been more successful in turning that awareness into action, resulting in an unprecedented rise in women scheduling mammograms and subsequently having breast cancer detected in its early, most treatable stages. We spoke with Sharon Young, a mammography technologist at Alabama Medical Group (AMG) to learn more about the preventive screening that can save your life.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers. It’s estimated approximately 30% of all new cancer diagnoses in women this year will be breast cancer. There are over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and the best way to ensure an early diagnosis (and successful treatment) is with early detection with mammography. Sharon Young is an experienced mammography tech and is expertly trained on the technological side of her job. Just as important? Helping women feel at ease while she’s doing it. ‘Some women may feel anxiety when they get a mammogram. Showing them kindness and empathy, as well as addressing any questions or concerns they may have, goes a long way to helping them feel comfortable,” she says.

Sharon attended Louisiana State University Shreveport and received her specialty training in mammography in Houston, Texas. “In the 1980s, I began my career doing xeromammography, where the breast

and the ability to put patients at ease. Taking pride in doing her job well, she says, “I also find it rewarding when I know I’ve performed the best mammogram for both my patients and the radiologist who reads them.”

When should we start scheduling mammograms and how often? Ac cording to the American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging, women should begin screening mammography at age 40 and have an annual mammogram every year after that.

Sharon’s job keeps her focus squarely on women’s health and she’s an advocate for staying up to date on breast cancer screenings, tell ing us, “Women need to put their health first and have their screening mammograms—it can save your life. Not all not breast cancers are in the form of a lump you can feel. The goal of mammograms is to find cancer at an early stage, when it can be treated and possibly cured.”

image is recorded on paper rather than X-ray film. Several years in, I decided to make mammography my primary modality,” she states. “I enjoyed—and still do—knowing I was helping other women take care of themselves.”

As imaging technology evolved and digital mammography became the norm, the process for patients has remained similar because it’s still an X-ray—only nowadays the image is sent to a computer versus film. Sharon is reassuring for first-timers. “Mammograms aren’t bad at all! The compression we use only lasts a few seconds and it’s essential for the radiologist to better see your breast tissue. Most patients say that holding their breath is the hardest part of experience,” she smiles, add ing, “In fact, one of the most rewarding things about my job is when patients tell me it wasn’t bad at all!”

AMG is uniquely qualified in mammography. “We use a Hologic Digital Mammography System, which is the best, in my opinion. Our patients are scheduled, but if they have an appointment with an AMG physician and need a mammogram, they can have one the same day. It’s another benefit to working in this multi-specialty clinic—fewer ap pointments,” she claims.

While there’s no disputing that digital mammography can detect a whopping 28% more breast cancers than first-generation X-ray film, the accuracy of the mammography tech in positioning the breast for imaging is crucial. That’s where mammogram techs like Sharon come in. She lives at the intersection of experience in the latest technology

ANNA

Knowing full well that many people can become somewhat numb to the cancer conversation, we decided to bring Anna Moore’s special story to light as she offers a lesson for us all. Leaning into her incredible tribe of women and quotes such as C.S. Lewis’ “Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace within difficulties.” Even the sign near the pre-op elevator stated, “The task ahead of you is never greater than the strength within you.” This mother of two young girls found her silver linings and isn’t looking back.

Putting it all out there, Anna boils down her journey with breast cancer, sharing, “Cancer gave me perspective. It made me a more open person. Open to sharing my cancer story. Open to saying ‘yes’ and trying new things like doing this article. Open to new friendships and cherishing people more and worrying less about the court of public opinion. It’s hard to put into words, but I like who I am better on this side of the journey. I’m a less guarded person now, which I think makes me feel more real.”

Raised mainly in Montgomery, with a pit stop in New York City, Anna moved to Mobile in 2007 with her husband, Bill. Today, Anna is about to ring the one-year-cancer-clear bell and at just 44 years old, this wife and mother of two young girls, Sarah and Harriet, is brimming with gratitude and not afraid to talk about it.

Meeting her, you’d never know she’s been through an arduous time because she appears to be the picture of health. Fit and energetic with a big, beautiful smile, she’s that woman you might envy when stand ing behind her in line at the grocery store. As the Director of Admis sions at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, you may have seen her bouncing around the campus. “My husband went to St. Paul’s and our girls started there in Pre-K. I guess you could say we bleed red, white, and blue, St.

Paul’s colors, and this is my 16th year with the school. I love meeting new families, giving them tours, helping them navigate the admissions process, and sharing with them all the great things our Saints learn and experience. I’ve met some wonderful families and I love working where my girls go to school,” she tells us, beaming.

Anyone who has experienced cancer or cared for a loved one during treatment knows life’s hardships don’t stop, and that was true for Anna. “Within a two-year span, my brother died unexpectedly at 40, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a bilateral mastectomy, my dad got very sick and passed away, and then I helped my mom pack up her home of 40 years and move to Mobile. It was a lot,” she shares.

Due to her young age, we ask about her diagnosis and Anna ex plains, “In 2018, my high school friends and I took a trip to celebrate our 40th birthdays. My best friend, Kristen, said we all had to get mam mograms before the trip. It took Kristen insisting we all get them to make me finally call the doctor’s office. The month before the trip, I had my first mammogram. Based on my family history, I was a candidate for the High-Risk Breast Program at Infirmary Surgical Specialists and didn’t hesitate when asked to be a part of the program. I had a screen ing every six months followed by an appointment with Tammy Pugh, CRNP, to discuss the results. In 2019, my mammogram detected someTop, $198; Hemline, 251.287.6875. thing suspicious, which led to a biopsy. Fortunately, it was only calcifications.”

Being proactive in the program, Anna felt positive and life went on. However, in 2021, she received a call following a routine mammogram informing her that she needed a follow-up on her right breast. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘I bet it will just be calcifications again.’ But before the biopsy proce dure, the radiologist asked if he could pray for me. I knew something was different this time but I thought it would be ok. I was sent home with a sheet of paper that detailed all the possible outcomes. The day before my brother’s birthday, the first one since he passed away, I received my life-altering diagnosis when Tammy called. I got the piece of paper with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) circled,” Anna recalls.

Soon after, Anna had a bilateral mastectomy fol lowed by breast reconstruction surgery. “I made the decision to have a bilateral mastectomy even though I only needed to remove one breast. My mantra was ‘No regrets.’ I was throwing everything at this the first time as I didn’t want to look back and wish I had done something different. Of course, I wondered if I was being too aggressive but the pathology report from my surgery revealed some of the cancer had be come invasive, making my cancer Stage 1, which con firmed to me I made the right decision,” Anna tells us.

While Anna’s story is far too common, she has a unique aspect that’s not only relatable, it’s touching in a small-town way. “I remember getting ‘the call’ from Tammy. It was a Friday afternoon and Dr. Caro line McGugin followed up that same day. Caroline is not only my neighbor, she’s a friend and a breast sur geon at Infirmary Surgical Specialists. Caroline told me I wasn’t going to die. In fact, she comforted me so much I didn’t feel the need to use the emergency satellite phone to try to reach my husband as he was fishing off-shore and didn’t have cell service. Plus, I needed time to process the news. I swiftly learned that once you get the diagnosis there’s no manual to tell you exactly what to do next, which was the hardest part. I wasn’t scared, but I knew time was of the es sence and I wanted a plan. So, from there, I texted my other neighbor girlfriend, Dr. Jennifer Scalici, who is a Gynecologic Oncologist, and more at Mitchell Cancer Insti tute (MCI) and asked if she was home. I remember her replying, ‘Yep! What’s up?’ I told her and she said come on over. She let me cry, she made me laugh, and she gave me advice on the steps I should take.” Adding another confidant and Midtowner, Dr. Jennifer Pierce, also a Gyneco logic Oncologist from MCI, to the call list, Anna had access to an incredible group of women within a stone’s throw. Talk about a tribe!

Comforted, Anna and Bill went to see Caroline. “She did a thorough job of ex plaining my diagnosis and recommended doing the surgery within three months. Coincidently, she was having a baby the following week and would be home on maternity leave for the next three months. Talk

about timing! She suggested I see a doctor she trained with at the Uni versity of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Truthfully, I walked away feeling informed but overwhelmed and I even remember being a little disheartened that Caroline wouldn’t be available to perform my surgery. But as a working mom too, I understood. As I drove back to work, a song came on the radio that basically said when one door closes, an other opens, and that’s when I decided I was going to UAB. I felt such a sense of peace,” Anna explains.

Within a few weeks Anna had appointments scheduled. “At UAB, you’re assigned a team with a breast surgeon, a radiologist, an oncolo gist and a plastic surgeon. They review your case and meet with you to discuss their recommendations, but the day before I was to go to Birmingham, three out four of us in my family tested positive for CO VID. Talk about a curveball! UAB rescheduled my appointments via Zoom and conference calls. I remember smiling on my final call be cause a plan was falling into place. I didn’t actually meet my doctors in person until the day before my surgery. We were definitely doing this by faith!” Anna shares.

Relieved, it was time for Anna and Bill to tell their daughters about the diagnosis. “Bill did a really good job starting this hard conversa tion, and while we didn’t sugarcoat it, we also didn’t give them more information than we thought they needed at their age. That night, when I tucked in my oldest daughter, I saw the look of worry in her face

and I remember looking her in the eyes and telling her, ‘I will not die from this.’ Telling my parents was even harder due to my brother’s re cent passing. Here I was, their only living child, calling to tell them I had cancer. I really tried to downplay it because I didn’t want to worry them. I admit to not doing a good job telling friends and co-workers. Not because I was trying to keep it private, but because I didn’t want to drop the can cer bomb on them. If it came up naturally, I shared my story, but otherwise I had a hard time telling people,” Anna confides.

We were curious to ask Anna about the impact on her children. She says, “My youngest daughter, Harriet, just reminded me that I had my surgery two days after her eighth birthday. It was a lot to juggle be tween trying to celebrate her and preparing to be out of the office and for life ‘post-sur gery.’ For example, I had restrictions after surgery on how much I could lift and the range of motion of my arms, so I went around the house before surgery putting stools in places, lowering coffee cups from the cabinets to the counter, buying shirts that zipped or buttoned up the front, etcetera. My daughters and I got matching blankets to feel connected while I was in

Birmingham. I was really touched by the support we received. Friends made sure my daughters got to their extracurriculars, brought meals, and sent flowers.”

Naturally, Anna also worries about her daughters’ risk for breast cancer. “In a follow-up appointment, I asked my oncologist when I needed to start my daughters’ screenings. My mom and I both had breast cancer so I know the importance of early detection and wanted to be as proactive as possible. Because I opted to have genetic testing done through the breast program, I know I don’t carry the genes for breast cancer, so my girls can begin screenings in their early twenties,” Anna assures us.

As for the rough road, Anna explains, “The drains and tissue ex panders were the worst part. There were definitely days I wanted to rip out the expanders because they hurt so much, but after a few weeks the pain subsided. Fortunately, I didn’t need radiation or chemotherapy. I take Tamoxifen every day and will continue for 5–10 years. Amazed by her matter of fact approach, we ask Anna to share her inspiration. “God and my husband are the short answer. My faith has been strengthened throughout all of these trials. I learned to surrender control—to let go and let God. My husband is my rock. There’s no way I could have survived the past two years without him.”

Paying it forward is fundamental, as well. “In March a mom at our school asked if we could meet for coffee be cause she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Being able to answer questions, share my story, give advice for life post-surgery (like how to wash your hair with your arm restrictions and how to deal with the discomfort of the expanders), and provide encour agement really helped give purpose to what I’ve been through. And when I ‘voluntold’ Bill to be a part of Ameri can Cancer Society’s local Real Men Wear Pink campaign, he happily obliged because breast cancer has touched us so personally and we want to use our experience to help others and raise awareness,” Anna warmly concludes. With so much loss, Anna’s positive outlook is beyond ad mirable. But for us, the best part is Anna crediting her difficult journey for who she is today—100 percent real and happy to stand in front of a camera and tell her story.

As the company launches the new fall collection, we spoke to Maghan Oroszi, Chief Operations and Creative Offcer, who was entrusted with the reins of this burgeoning jewelry empire when Mignon stepped back. Covering everything from her own storied career, Mignon’s impact, and how the fall collection, called Neutral Ground, meets the cultural moment, Maghan is a force of nature in her own right, and quite a gem, too.

For those who don’t know, Mignon Faget designs are synon ymous with New Orleans, blending its architecture, local wildlife, and everyday objects to create timeless jewelry and houseware items. Think Jasmine and Magnolia flow ers, freshwater pearls, Fleur de Lis, Mardi Gras, Tulips, sand dollars, butterflies, banana leaves, honeybees, tigers, renaissance architectural details and more. And, Southern women of all ages have jewelry boxes brimming with various timeless pieces accumulated from special occasions and, of course, trips to the Big Easy. Simply put, it’s a big deal.

First, a little background. Maghan grew up in Bloomingdale, New York, a hamlet of 600 people in the Adirondack Park. From there, she launched herself into the world of metallic arts and architecture, attend ing the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design and Tulane School of Architecture. With a skillset that reads like a checklist for her current position as Chief Operations and Creative Officer, she’s worked as a professional sculptor, blacksmith, and jeweler, having been in the jew elry industry for 21 years.

Living in New Orleans and being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Maghan shares, “I found myself back in New York working as a black smith, specializing in architectural ironwork. That transition reconnect ed me to architecture, for which I’ve had a lifelong passion. I decided to return to New Orleans and enroll at Tulane to finish my architecture degree.” Moving back the year before her classes were to begin was ser endipitous. “Looking for temporary work, I was hired to be Mignon’s design assistant. Mignon studied sculpture during her time at Tulane, also has a lifelong passion for architecture, and of course was a jewelry icon in New Orleans; we had lots of common interests and quickly con nected through our shared passion for design. As the business grew, certain structures needed to be developed to meet what had become an extraordinary demand from her collectors. My background and general interest in the way things work allowed me to bring more structure to Mignon’s design process.”

As Maghan’s role at the design house grew, so did its output. “We started with setting up seasonal calendars for design and production. From there, the opportunities for me to grow with the business have been almost endless. I brought in new technologies like computer mod eling and printing, as well as mold making and casting in-house. I’ve negotiated deals with vendors and managed the design and construction of four retail stores. The most recent will be unveiled at Lakeside Mall in the summer of 2023. Through these projects, I learned that I have a natural talent for logistics,” Maghan says. “I’ve had many titles in my 12 years with Mignon. Each role has led me to where I am now, the Chief Operating and Creative Officer, and I never made it back to Tulane,” she adds, smiling.

Maghan was fortunate in meeting the New Orleans jeweler, no doubt, but let’s also note the artistic and MBA-level mind of Maghan in her meteoric rise through the ranks. “Mignon and I both have a passion for design. Mignon expressed that passion as an Artist. But, I approach design from a place of problem-solving rather than a personal expres sion. Luckily, like Mignon, I’m a naturally curious person and can’t imagine not being able to find inspiration. I love the details of things and understanding how things work. I’m inspired by the way the design of a classic column is derived from plant forms or how the computergenerated scaffolding of a 3D printed model creates its own organic design,” she explains.

And, Maghan’s admiration for Mignon knows no limits. “In the late ’60s, Mignon was a rare female entrepreneur who decided to put all her energy into her creations and build a business out of it. She knew she had more to give and having the courage to step out should be inspiring to all women,” she declares, adding, “Seeing Mignon’s success remains an inspiration to this day. While she decided to step away from the dayto-day operations almost four years ago, this business is her greatest expression. Her decision to promote me and to allow me to not only keep the brand alive, but to also plan for its next 50 years might be the greatest honor I’ll ever receive,” she beams.

Outside of work, Maghan enjoys all things New Orleans. “From our tent at the French Quarter Festival to grab bing a bite at the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, I love indulging in all the city has to offer. I’m well-traveled and have lived in many places including NYC, San Francisco, and Miami, but there’s no place like New Orleans. Here, we celebrate all life has to offer. Even during the most challenging times—and we’ve seen many—the community comes together and focuses on celebrating what makes us spe cial—the food, the music, the weather (good and bad), the greetings you get on the street from total strangers, and the diversity of our people,” Maghan shares.

Interestingly, Mignon is a fifth-generation New Orleanian. “The culture is in her blood and can’t help but influence her design,” says Maghan. “I’ve chosen to make this my home because of those things and I believe that continuing to celebrate them through our designs is the authenticity of the brand. Our designs are not about Mignon, or me—they are about all of us, and all that we experience in what I be lieve to be the most culturally rich city in the country.”

This year’s fall collection, Neutral Ground, reflects the city’s cultur al diversity and the design house’s inclusive mindset. “In New Orleans, we call our grassy road medians ‘the neutral ground’ and use them as parks. Conceptually the collection, like the actual neutral ground, is a place for everyone to come together. Anyone can use the neutral ground and anyone can wear our jewelry,” Maghan states. “We have extended sizes and mixed metals so that there’s something for everyone. It seam lessly mixes with all our collections, can be dressed up or down, and worn for special occasions or every day. We want this new collection to function as a vehicle for our collectors’ personal expression, since our collectors come from all walks of life. The only thing we can defini tively say about them is that they love Mignon Faget and this collection

is more about them than it is about us.” Citing the stacking rings and the warm mix freshwater pearl necklace as her favorites, she adds, “The modern forms of the rings are instant classics while the classic pearl strand uses mixed pearls to create a very modern palette.”

Of course we’re dying to know about Maghan’s personal style. “I’d call myself a minimalist, which is funny because Mignon is a maximal ist when it comes to jewelry. When I dress up, I layer different collec tions, always attempting to achieve that perfect balance that Mignon so effortlessly displays. Day to day, I stick to my more minimalist nature. Always mixed in is my gold Mignon Faget thorn necklace. Mignon designed this collection to represent the inherent strength of being a woman. She believes no matter how delicate first impressions may ap pear, there are always hidden strengths,” Maghan shares.

Her top styling tip? “Be confident and express yourself authenti cally. The beauty of this collection is that it’s impossible to get wrong. Each piece is perfect for everyday looks. A bolder look can easily be built by layering pieces. The rings and bracelets all stack together— wear one or five. The necklaces all coordinate, as well. Mix the long strand of pearls with a short all-metal necklace and you instantly have a statement. The new collection can also be worn with previous ones. Mixing the crisp, modern shapes of Neutral Ground with the classic floral designs of our Jasmine collection is a fashion-forward look that anyone could wear with confidence.”

Appealing to women of all ages, the number of collectors grows each year as the younger generation is embracing timeless elegance and moving away from fast fashion and its inherent wastefulness. Maghan adds, “Mignon started out in fashion and didn’t like the seasonality of it. What she loved about fine jewelry design was that these were invest ments and something that could be passed down through generations. Although we try to incorporate them into our collections, our designs are never driven by trends—they’re meant to grow with you.”

A testament to Mignon’s staying power, Maghan expands, “Some of our top-selling designs were introduced 50 years ago; the timeless ness of our design has been proven. It’s down to engagement and telling

a story—your story, not the brand’s. Our collectors are very engaged in the brand and love to tell us their sto ries. They tell us about what their pieces mean to them and how special events like births, graduations, wed dings, promotions, and personal accomplishments all connect them. We want to tell those stories. Today, the collector is the real story behind the brand. They’ve taken Mignon’s artistic expressions and made them their own expressions of what matters most to them. Younger new collectors can feel confident that any Mignon Faget design will be cherished for a lifetime.”

Elaborating on Mignon Faget’s assurance of su perlative quality, Maghan shares, “In industry terms we’re considered demi-fine. Sterling silver, one of the eight precious metals, is our core material. However, we also produce our designs in gold and use precious stones. We use the highest quality materials and all of our jewelry is hand-finished, ensuring that our col lector feels spoiled with each purchase. This holiday season we are expanding our fine jewelry and releas ing a capsule collection that is all gold, diamonds, and pearls—it is truly luxurious.”

Like Mignon, Maghan is a firm believer in lo cal support. “All of our jewelry is designed in New Orleans, and most of it is made in New Orleans on Magazine Street. While we do work with different partners to utilize new technologies, we’re com mitted to keeping the majority of our manufac turing in New Orleans.”

Even better, she tells us, “This year, our lead de signer, Rebecca BrownDavis, began an in-house training program that will allow us to develop the next generation of jewel ers and designers.”

Regarding their core customer, Maghan waxes downright lyrical, and we’re here for it. “While Mignon Faget designs are pulled from the beauty of New Orleans, the same themes can be found through out the Gulf Coast and the South,” she says Lastly, Maghan confirms she’s a woman who needs a break from time to time like the rest of us, by sharing “Ev ery now and then I make a brief escape to the quiet and quaint town of Fairhope. Being near the water and hearing the bells toll at sunset or shopping at antique stores for my next piece of creative influence, Fairhope is an amazing place to recharge.” We couldn’t agree more and look forward to seeing your neutral ground and hearing your Mignon Faget stories.

A CALL TO FASHION

Turning a passion into a business is always challenging, especially in the world of online shopping and big box retail takeovers. But with hard work, dreams really can come true. Kati Lovvorn, the proud owner of midtown Mobile’s new hot fashion spot, Velvet Lab, proves this point and gives us every reason to shop at her carefully curated oasis. From assorted sizes to a wide range of classic and trendy brands, Kati is all about helping women love the way they look. With a ‘no-woman-should-settle’ approach, she shares her journey, what’s trending. and more.

All Looks Available at Velvet Lab

For most everyone in the fashion industry, the calling comes early. For Kati, it started when she was just six years old. “I’ve loved fashion my whole life. When I was little, I changed outfits so often that my parents put a lock at the top of my closet so I couldn’t get in there after I was already dressed. However, I soon figured out how to drag a chair to my room and jump off to unlock the door. As they say, ‘if there’s a will, there’s a way,’” Kati fondly recalls.

All grown-up, Kati not only has a lock-free closet of her own, she owns a clothing boutique, too. And, with a laser-like focus on what women of all ages and sizes truly need and want, she’s open for business in midtown Mobile, where the cool factor is growing off the charts. Located on Old Shell Road near everyone’s favorite burger and dog joint, the Dew Drop Inn, Kati shares, “I looked all over and hadn’t found anything quite right. Eventually, a friend told me about the Shoppes at Midtown and it was love at first sight. I immediately started imagining everything I could do with the space,” she declares about the large empty location perfectly sandwiched between Pure Barre and Nova Market.

Upon entering, most are stopped in their tracks as it feels like a hip boutique one might see in bigger cities. When asked her vision, Kati shares, “First and foremost, I wanted the design to be crisp, clean, and comfortable—even a place for customers to relax. I purchased my countertops and decor first and everything else was built around

those. I like to describe it as modern with a splash of boho.”

Kati certainly achieved her design goals, but even more importantly, she’s hit a home run with the brands and services offered, especially when it comes to sizing and price points. “I’ve never been a size two and I think every woman should be able to walk into a store and have the ability to try on clothes and walk out with a shopping bag of happiness. I offer several brands with sizes ranging from XS–XL with very generous cuts. The industry still has a ways to go with size inclusion, but I’ve been happy with the progress of the brands I carry. Some of my favorites are Show Me Your MuMu, a US-based female-owned business that really knows how to make clothes for women’s bodies. The fit, fabrics, quality, and styles are as flawless as their whimsical patterns and colors. Project Social T is my favorite elevated basics brand. The material is like butter and takes your plain white tee to the next level,” Kati tells us, adding, “I’m also adamant about having a variety of price points so everyone can shop and enjoy Velvet Lab.”

Getting more specific, Kati states, “Velvet Lab is unique. I keep my styles adventurous, fashion-forward, and classic. I offer a taste of the trends that can be worn effortlessly in daily life. A believer in accessories, I feel the more the better and layering necklaces and bracelets is so popular. It’s fun to mix nice gold pieces with a big funky colorful piece,” she explains. And it doesn’t stop there, “I also offer many gifting items like slippers, pajama sets, bags, bright and locally themed glassware, hand towels, a wonderful unisex scent that’s so fresh you’ll never want to leave home without it, and some really funky and fun candles, candle sticks, and cheeky matchbooks that are great to give and get.”

Like most smart retailers, Kati knows about customer service, too. “I want people to feel at ease and know I’m here for all their questions, concerns, and advice. I want everyone to feel fabulous in what they

purchase. Feeling beautiful inside and out is essential to how we take on each day. I love styling and every time a customer is willing to try looks outside of their comfort zone, they’re pleasantly surprised and leave with the perfect looks and new shopping know-how. With my higher end brands, I even do special orders and I offer curbside pickup, which has been helpful for my working moms!”

Clearly knowledgeable, we ask about her experience. “I worked at various boutiques throughout college with the hopes of eventually becoming a stylist. However, as I continued to work for small boutiques and female entrepreneurs, it became evident that I belonged in retail. I then became the Director at the Urban Emporium in downtown Mobile, where I had the opportunity to help over 100 businesses navigate the ins and outs of retail. I’d never worked in the nonprofit space, let alone an incubator. It was a whole new adventure in fashion and solely focused on creating a space to nurture start-up and early-stage independent retailers. In a world of big box retail, this is really special. I also had the pleasure of working with the Downtown Mobile Alliance and all the resources they offer. It was a great learning experience in fields such as business, marketing, development, and real estate. I learned the importance of how connected everything is and how each connection contributes to success and growth. I was lucky to have so many mentors and it’s because of this experience that I now have my own store,” Kati exclaims.

Kati opened Velvet Lab in March of this year “It was an exciting, scary, and satisfying time—full-circle moment. I’m thrilled I made the decision because Mobile is a growing community with so much space for retail growth. However, it’s not all glamorous. I spent a ton of time preparing my business plan with my consultant, Denise Browning with Hunter Ventures, and I couldn’t have done it without her guidance! As

a planner and list maker, so the first obstacle I had to overcome was realizing my lists were obsolete as soon as I made them. Being solely responsible for all decision making is exciting, but also heavy when something goes wrong. It’s all on you. Sometimes these mistakes are expensive, so you learn—very quickly,” Kati shares.

When asked if it’s all worth it, Kati tells us, “It’s better than I imagined! There’s no feeling like putting all your blood, sweat, and tears into your dream and seeing it come together perfectly. Every time someone comments, ‘This is beauti ful!’, ‘I love your wallpaper,’ and ‘I love what you offer,’ my heart literally skips a beat. It’s a sur prisingly personal thing to present my store to the world and I just want it to be perfect However, my top tip is not to get hung up on every small detail because you’ll never open the door. Which is easier said than done!”

As for her personal style, Kati says, “I’m a big believer in finding fits that work for your body type and going with those, but I’m also an adventurous dresser. Always a little ahead of my time, I think my looks show shoppers they can pull off trends in their own way, too. Zendaya and Blake Lively are my celebrity style icons, and stylists Rachel Zoe and Brad Goreski are inspirational; the heart and soul they put into their clients’ looks really shows and I like to think I make that same effort for my customers. My current musthaves include cute tennis shoes to pair with jeans, dresses, and athleisure looks. I love nothing more than getting dressed up and throwing on tennis shoes! Also, gold chains galore—I don’t leave home without them. I’ve always been a ‘put on one more thing before I leave’ instead of a ‘take one thing off’ kind of girl. And sunglasses! I never have fewer than five pairs on me because they truly can change how you feel. I carry I-SEA sunnies and they’re chic, affordable, and polarized— a must-have for me.

As for what this hometown gal is looking for ward to, Kati shares, “I’m excited for my October holiday season deliveries as everything is bright, sequins, and sophisticated. I can’t wait for my customers to see the great cocktail dresses and trousers. Of course I have an incredible selection of gameday attire in team colors that can be worn outside of football season, too.” On a personal note, Kati enjoys the water and boating with her family and she and her father like to say they’re the last water skiers left on Dog River. Looking forward to the end of the month, Kati concludes with, “I absolutely love Halloween, it’s my favor ite over Christmas and Thanksgiving by far!” And that makes perfect sense to us.

THE LOWDOWN ON COOLSCULPTING

Coolsculpting isn’t new, but Synergy MedAesthetics has quickly become known for their expertise in the procedure. Director of Aesthetic Services Amber Cherry, LME, MA, is, above all, a master body sculptor, but more than that, she’s an educator, too. And, it’s her absolute transparency that keeps her patients returning. We spoke to Amber about the cold, hard truth of Coolsculpting, from exactly what to expect at your initial consultation to an honest (but still transformative) assessment of the results you can expect. With the goal of educating us all, Amber’s real-world transparency is a welcome change.

There are few among us who relish the thought of some one grabbing the fat on our lower abdomen (or anywhere else), even if we’re paying for the service. Now add in a layer of vulnerability that comes with wearing a dispos able bra and panties while it’s happening. If this is already sounding like a nightmare, we understand, but stick around if you’ve thought about upping your confidence levels via getting rid of those pockets of fat no amount of working out will conquer.

Plus, people have misconceptions about Coolsculpting. In fact, you may know someone who was delighted with the results or someone who wasn’t. According to Amber, client satisfaction comes down to two

things—having the procedure explained completely and honestly to them and having it performed by an expert in body contouring. Lucky for us, Amber ticks both those boxes. In fact, she insists on in-person consultations before the procedure, ensuring no client leaves with bad information. Amber chooses to deal in reality. Not looking for fast sales, she’d rather have her clients’ trust. And she does, in spades. After all, truthfulness always wins in the long run doesn’t it?

Regarding Coolsculpting, Amber shares, “A lot of times, people think one treatment will be the equivalent to liposuction. That’s why consultations are essential. It’s my chance to educate them on the pro cedure and how it actually works. It’s not ‘one and done’—it’s mul

tiple treatments. There’s a limited amount of Cryolipolysis (fat cells destroyed by freezing) from one treatment, about 20–25%. If your goal is 50% or higher fat reduction in that area of your body, you’ll need subsequent treatments.”

Amber is an aesthetics (and U.S. Army) veteran, and it shows. Before even considering a new machine or product for use at Synergy, she tests it as a consumer to ensure it lives up to the hype from salespeople and glossy ads. She did this with Coolsculpting, too.

“I’ve had it done on multiple parts of my body, including my abdomen and flanks. It absolutely works.” Amber also tells clients what levels of pain to expect, although she admits it’s subjective. “When I had Cools culpting done on my abdomen, it was only a bit tender, but when I had my flanks done, I understood why some people say it’s painful,” she admits.

Synergy uses Coolsculpting Elite, the latest version of the machine, employing the newest technology. Having the most up-to-date version means better outcomes for patients, but the machine is only half of the equation. The other half is the practitioner, and when we say Amber is a master at Coolsculpting, we’re not using hyperbole. In addition to com pleting Allergan Medical Institute’s Coolsculpting Training Course, she further graduated from the Master Course at Allergan Headquarters in Austin, Texas. She’s the only master-credentialed Coolsculpting practitio ner in the Mobile area and has been a practitioner for almost seven years.

One thing she wants those considering Coolsculpting to understand is that it’s not a weight loss plan—it’s about contouring. So what does it work on? “Stubborn pockets of subcutaneous fat can be contoured. For instance, women tend to store fat in their lower abdomen due to estrogen levels. I love that I have the ability to help them remove it,” she says, adding, “This is where aesthetics meets artistry. A woman can tell me she wants a more defined waist, a thigh gap, or a double chin minimized and I can help her achieve that through contouring. Playing a part in someone’s self-confidence growing is something I treasure.”

Contouring won’t work on visceral fat (picture an otherwise averagesized person with a pot belly) because it’s wrapped around organs. It’s also not for loose skin, which is often mistaken for fat. “Clients will come in for a consultation and point it out. Although Coolsculpting won’t tighten skin, we have many other options like lasers and ultrasound that will stimulate collagen growth and tighten loose skin,” she shares.

Because it can take several treatments (and months) to see the final results since it takes time for your body to eliminate the destroyed fat cells, some clients might not notice the changes at first. “I recently had a client tell me she wasn’t sure her lower abdomen looked better. I showed her the before and after photos, which made it clear how much the area im proved and she was delighted. We see our own bodies every day and it’s sometimes hard to notice the incremental changes from Coolsculpting,” Amber clarifies.

Which leads to Amber’s key point (and passion)—education. “At Syn ergy, we provide a multitude of services, and education is such a large part of what we do. I love to educate people,” she says. And she means it, so much so that she travels the country as a consultant, training practitioners in advanced aesthetics for not only Coolsculpting, but also laser theory, tattoo removal, microneedling, chemical peels, and more. Amber’s skillset is a major factor in Synergy MedAesthetics being a trusted one-stop aes thetic shop and as luck would have it, she’s got a VIP customized Cools culpting package just in time for the holidays. “Summer bodies are made in the winter!” she so brilliantly concludes.

First, a word on microneedling from Aimee: “Microneedling is a procedure that helps the skin repair itself naturally through dermal remodeling. A microneedling pen induces ‘microinjuries’ with tiny micro-needles that help treat a variety of skin conditions including acne scaring, enlarged pores, wrinkles, and stretch marks. It’s also wonderful for melasma, which was one of Stevye’s skin concerns. It works by boosting collagen production, which in turn rejuvenates your skin.”

During the initial consultation, Aimee learned everything about Stevye’s skin, from her skincare regimen to issues she hoped to address. “I really needed help with me lasma on my forehead and upper lip. (Melasma causes dark, discolored patches on your skin.) I also had some acne scarring that needed atten tion,” says Stevye.

Describing the procedure, Stevye recounts, “Aimee applied numbing cream to my entire face and 30 minutes later, I was numb. Then she cleansed and sterilized my face and started using the microneedling pen. I mainly felt vibrations, al though some areas around my eyes and mouth I felt a bit of a pinch.” Aimee adds, “Microneedling only takes about 20–30 min utes. Different depths are chosen for different areas of the face, so the treatment is customized to each patient according to their anatomy and target areas. Once this step is complete, we clean the treatment area and, you guessed it, apply sunscreen before the patient leaves the office.”

Stevye reports no downtime at all, but says her face was “red and felt sunburnt for a few days. My skin was a bit flaky, too, but it was minor.” In all, the procedure took about an hour—30 minutes for numb ing and 30 minutes for microneedling and post-procedure cleansing. In addition, she says Aimee’s warmth and professionalism were top-notch, claiming, “Aimee made me feel extremely comfortable and even turned on the bed warmer for me! She checked in on me throughout the proce

dure and we had a good conversation.”

And the results? Stevye is more than pleased. “I saw improvement after one treatment. My melasma was sig nificantly lighter and my face looked tighter and brighter overall. I liked it so much I’ve already been back to Aimee for a second session!”

Of course Aimee is gratified by praise for her skills as an aesthetician, but she’s not surprised. She knows the results one can expect from every treat ment AMG Aesthetics offers, telling us, “Like Stevye, each patient leaves the office with specific post-care in structions and take-home products to assure proper care is taken during their healing process, as well as my personal phone number in case they have any questions. While there’s no downtime in the sense that patients need to miss work, skin is usually red for a few days after microneedling, followed by 2–4 days of peeling and flaking. After that, you’re good to go!”

THE PROCESS

“AIMEE APPLIED NUMBING CREAM

Tailoring a plan for her patients is one of Aimee’s favorite parts of of her job, and she leaves us with a little extra knowledge of what’s possible. “Although Stevye didn’t need much correction, there are some patients who opt for a more aggressive treatment. In those cases, microneedling can be coupled with a chemical peel or fol lowed by laser treatments. Some will also opt to add dermaplaning to their microneedling session, but my favor ite time to dermaplane is two weeks after microneedling so we can remove the remaining dead skin cells and vel lus hair—the patient really glows once they’re completely healed. The possibilities are endless, and I love tai loring a treatment plan for each one of my patients.” Aimee’s enthusi asm is contagious, her skills are superlative, and we’re already making our own appointments at AMG.

PEACE, LOVE & PEONIES

Attention! The time to start preparing for fall celebrations is now. Soon enough your calendar will reveal you coulda, woulda, shoulda started sooner as we’re moments away from the holiday product pushing from the big box retail world. Here, Ewa Wiggins, the horticulturalist at Stokley’s Midtown Express, shares her favorite fall décor ideas inspired by nature’s harvest that are sure to not only look fabulous, you’re guaranteed better memories than what you’ll get out of a box.

Hello!

With fall finally upon us, Garden Express in midtown Mobile is bursting with the season’s natural bounty harvested from our local farm. Sure to ignite the interior designer in us all, it’s the perfect time to get started on a décor plan for both your inside and outside areas. From pumpkins and hay bales to cornstalks and cabbages, we have a huge assortment of options.

For those that are crafty, consider the endless possibilities you can achieve with paint and pumpkins. I suggest trying a stencil, a paint pen, or even stickers to customize your décor. Try small pumpkins with names of dinner guests in place of name cards on your table. Or, try family names in various sizes in an entry hall. The possibilities are endless. White pumpkins are a special addition and can be dressed up with bright ribbons and candle holders or other natural elements like vines, moss, and more atop large platters for mobility. If you have children, they’ll be delighted with pumpkins covered in spiders! And this couldn’t be easier in terms of crafting.

If you don’t have time for paint, try stacking pumpkins for more impact on your table, open shelves, sideboard tables, and outdoor areas. A striking alternative, this is as simple as it gets. When it comes to the porch area, look for pumpkins and gourds in various shapes, sizes and colors. Fill planters with big full cabbages already in a container, just add water as needed. If it’s a large planter, fill with cabbages, pumpkins, branches, and gourds for maximum impact. Bales of hay will allow you raise some of your pumpkins off the ground if you have a spacious porch and will add height and scale.

If you’re a gardener, consider using pumpkins as planters. That’s right, pumpkins are the perfect vehicle for succulents and other hardy small plants. We have rows and rows of succulents that the children flock to and with their small hands, they can perfectly plant these small treasures. Bigger pumpkins can accommodate mums and I love the contrast of the pink and yellow hues.

Whether you’re entertaining a small army of friends and family or just a few, the point is to embrace all that fall has to offer—even if only you enjoy them. The best part is that it can be as easy or detailed as you’d like. For me, watching friends and family dart around the nursery making plans for this craft and that plant is my greatest joy. With a noticeable change in the air, the excitement for upcoming celebrations and memory-making is what we are here to help with.

Peace, love and peonies, Ewa

Making Your Money MATTER

If you’re like us and feel the more you learn, the less you know, read on. Our resident money guru, Justin Law, MBA, explains the positives and negatives of a 401(K) and how financial planning isn’t one-size-fits-all like our favorite sweater dresses. Read on and tap into his knowledge as who among us is trying to plan for poverty? Not us!

The good news is that without a 401(K) option, most of us wouldn’t have any savings at all. Thankful for what’s essentially forced savings, Wikipedia defines a 401(K) plan as an employer-sponsored, defined-contribution, personal pension account, as defined in subsection 401(K) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Periodical employee contributions come directly out of their paychecks, and may be matched by the employer.

Sounds simple (and blah) right? It’s vital to understand a 401(K) is not a tax deduction but rather tax deferred. That means, the money put into a 401(K) isn’t taxed until you take it out of the 401(K). So on one hand, if you save money this way, you’re ahead of the game because you’re saving. On the other hand, no one can know what the tax rate will be when you go to take your money out. What we do know, is that 401(K) money is subject to ordinary income tax—the highest way our money can be taxed. Interesting right? This means we all have a silent partner in our 401(K)— the government. I call this relationship a tax shadow because it’s fees that will go to the government that are following your money for the life of your 401(K).

Now, this is not to say 401(K)’s are bad. In fact, some companies match your contribution dollar for dollar up to a certain percent of your income. Wonderful. However, after that match and given the uncertainty of the future tax environment, working it to your best advantage isn’t simple or straight forward. When we start investing in a 401(K) when we’re young, we’re typically in the lowest tax bracket at that point in time. So, we have to question if postponing paying that income tax is really the best decision. Often, those with good intentions are unknowingly planning to be poor rather than comfortable as they age. Interestingly, most of us haven’t experienced US income tax rates like many did in 1944 when income tax peaked at a whopping 94% or even during the 1980’s when it hit around 63%. While these hikes were associated with times of conflict, we can’t predict the future. Imagine losing 94% of your 401(K) at retirement?

It is for these reasons that I truly believe in what I do. There are so many ways to work to create a future where you can live just as you live today. I believe in educating my clients and teach the concept of tax diversification so their future doesn’t depend on a low tax rate. From tax advantaged accounts like Roth IRA’s and more, everyone has options. But, just like every person is unique, their financial planning should be, too. There really aren’t cookie-cutter plans. It’s my goal to find a way for you to live as you do today, tomorrow and all the days that follow regardless of your age and income.

Until Next Time, Justin Law

WELLNESS WHISPERER

Wasdin M.Ed., LPC, NCC, RYT of True Yoga + Therapy opens up about what your therapist wish you knew when it comes to the complexity of diagnosis and progress in general. Turning the table, she provides the insider scoop on what we may need to consider as we care for the mental health of not only ourselves, but our loved ones, too.

Hello,!

Many people think diagnosis is a simple, black and white process: you have a set of symptoms and then boom—you have an affirmative diagnosis. And, a lot of people walk into therapy self-diagnosed. This has become popularized with the increasing conversations around mental health topics, especially by those with social media platforms like TikTok. While we love the level of awareness this takes and the willingness to address what may be causing problems, here are some things professionals wish you knew about diagnosis.

For starters, it’s complicated. Many diagnoses featured in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders share some of the exact same symptoms. Some disorders also commonly co-occur, presenting more complexity within a case and treatment options. People often have tendencies of a certain diagnosis without necessarily being diagnosable for it and sometimes certain “disorders” can truly be a by-product of another mental and/or medical condition. Therefore, diagnosis is much more complex than expected and why a well-trained professional is needed. Please do not attempt to self-diagnose or diagnose your child or loved one. This can be harmful. It’s more productive to identify the features that are most challenging and communicate this with a professional.

It also takes time. An accurate diagnosis relies on having all the information and a good look at the course of the disorder in question, especially in the case of mood disorders. This is where clinicians meet some issues with insurance, as diagnosis is required for insurance billing and coverage. However, it takes time to truly know a case for a definitive diagnosis. A formal evaluation by a psychiatrist or psychologist helps to jump-start this process. The sharing of this information with the therapist or clinician who’s facilitating the client’s treatment is necessary and exponentially helpful.

It can be helpful or hurtful for the client. For many, it’s very helpful and even relieving to know what someone is struggling with and to be able to name it. For the clinician, it’s helpful for creating a treatment plan, conceptualizing the case and anticipating the issues the client may be facing. For others, the effect is stigmatizing or may be accompanied by a grief-like cycle– after all, no one likes to be stereotyped or “put in a box,” really. Both very normal, these responses are important to process and work through with a professional.

Having a diagnosis doesn’t end the issue. It helps clinicians and clients understand the issues and aids in the treatment and recovery process, but it doesn’t fix the problem. Therapy works to empower the client to learn to manage symptoms and minimize the negative impact on their life. Progress isn’t linear; it does not always move forward. There will be ups and downs, and all have value to facilitate a greater understanding, which then can serve as a basis for prevention of more negative impact. Trust the process, and keep going.

COCKTAIL KING

Set to open his 2nd POST Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar in Spring Hill later this month, bar owner extraordinaire, Matt LeMond, spills the tea on what we can expect. In such a convenient location, those nearby truly have something to celebrate. Why? A POST cocktail isn’t just any cocktail. Perfect for everything from date night to girl’s night, cheers to the good news.

Greetings!

After listening to my downtown customers, I realized there’s a need for an upscale cocktail establishment in the ‘08 zip code area. When the space in the Holiday shopping center became available, I knew it would be the perfect fit for a new POST location. Just like our downtown location, guests will be able to enjoy happy hour with our carefully crafted cocktails in a highend space.

We made some enhancements to the menu to fit the Spring Hill community and we’ve had fun creating specific cocktails that will only be available at this location like the ‘08-er Cocktail! Committed to fresh and forward ingredients, think of drinks boasting aromas of slapped mint, lavender syrup and more. And naturally we’ll be serving our signature bites, POST toasts.

In addition to updating the space, we have a courtyard that can accommodate up to 300 friends and family members for private events and game spaces for the under-aged. We’re also bringing our famed cocktail classes and wine tastings. Perfect for the holidays, book soon! POSTdrinks.com click Book Now!

The POST team for both locations has been hard at work crafting new fall cocktails, too. We have a strong team of bartenders, not only behind the bar, but in their ability to create cuttingedge drinks for our customers to enjoy. We can’t wait to see you all there soon.

Cheers! matt lemond

pink table talk

Oh my gourd, It’s pumpkin season! Yep, it’s officially fall y’all and I couldn’t be more excited. From the moment I see the first Spider Lilies break ground and my chil dren start calling for their favorite pumpkin chip cook ies, my whole demeanor changes. With more pep in my step, I’m ready to feather my nest and embrace fall’s bounty.

So enthralled, I’m usually one of the first at Daphne’s Ha zel’s Market scooping up heaps of their traditional and exotic pumpkins. Obsessed with green, I stack white and green gourds in urns and vases as seasonal topiaries on all open spaces. Several local shops now carry colorful velvet pumpkins—my latest favorite decorating item. They add a modern flare and a pop of color to those topiaries.

Between summer bashes and hot flashes our very own Southern living expert is more than ready for fall’s cooler temperatures and, of course, the fashion.

Here, Charlotte Kilborn Carey shares what she’s craving most and what we can all look forward to as we sip our first frothy fall beverage.

While pumpkin, a beloved fruit, is super popular this time of year, I’m even more excited about the arriv al of fall fashion. Many of the trends are back for the second time in my lifespan and I’m here for it. For starters, everything Western is super chic right now. From freshly-styled cowboy boots to fringe, fringe and more fringe, giddy-up cowpokes! Dig decades deep in your closet for this classic return. You’ll also be count ing sheep because head-totoe shearling is also trending. From bomber jackets, vests, purses and shoes, stay warm in this textile under the Fri day night lights. Double your dollar and check out the cute shearling clogs from Target as the quintessential clog is back!

The blazer is the piece to pull your autumn ensembles to gether. I absolutely love tweed but all fabrics are blazing this season. Solidifying my suspicions that top trends from the ‘80s, ‘90s and the early ‘2000s are what consumers crave, it’s all about leather, including vegan options. You can’t go wrong with a moto-style jacket or dress with flashy hardware, skinny and jogger-style leather pants, and glossy skirts. If autumn’s muted colors aren’t your flavor, jewel tones are resurfacing. Bold hot pink reigns supreme in options like velvet suits, jumpsuits, handbags and loafers. Emerald green is a close second if pink isn’t your jam.

The opposite of fashion snooze fest, we can expect beautiful looks throughout the holidays and well into next year. I’m ready to pack up the linen and set out in my pink loafers to get my first pumpkin spiced latte of the season… hot please.
