EXPERIENCE. PERSONAL. EXCELLENCE.
Tis the season to celebrate! And, while we’re all game to raise a glass, holiday gatherings can be a lot of work. That’s why we were thrilled to meet the team at Daphne’s newest party emporium, Pop and Pour Party Co. Offering a fresh assortment of festive party goods, gifts and services, owners Jena Yaeger and Lesley Hendon, have knocked it out of the park and are here to help. Discovered by none other than our columnist, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, we’re excited to utilize all their new ideas for future celebrations. We had an absolute ball spending the day with them. In agreement, the ladies exclaimed it was one of the best days of their life. Music to our ears, we can easily testify to the level of creativity they bring to all that they do. And, if you’re like us, you’ll need a few last-minute gift ideas to get those stockings stuffed in the nick of time. Find our favorites in this celebratory issue, too. Leaving time for a little self-care and pampering, we catch up with a local nail technician that shares her talents and a few holiday trends sure to make the season merry and bright. Lastly, wanting to share a story about the true meaning of giving, we caught up with one busy medical student making a difference. Danner Butler is without a doubt an inspiration for us all. The best part? He needs the community to jump in and help. He not only tells us how, but proves by example that it doesn’t have to be difficult and that our children are indeed watching us. As we prepare to ring in 2023, the Access team thanks you all for another fantastic year. Happy holidays and enjoy!

GREEKFEST GALA
The Bay’s finest came out to support the annual Greek Fest Charity Gala in style. With her impeccable taste, Dr. Stephanie Grosz brought Greek culture to life with to-die-for tablescapes and a larger-than-life display of charming cityscapes. Creating the always anticipated Greek homage entrance, Carl Clark of Fairhope’s Southern Veranda created a decadent lemon-bliss vision. Partners with the local Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, a unique collaboration of Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians, as well as faiths of all denominations, the organizations hard work resulted in a plate-smashing success.

Summing it up perfectly, board member Ryane Fulgham says, “It felt like you were transported to Greece as soon as you walked in the door. From the moving scenes of Greek beaches and towns projected on the walls, to the food and wine, it felt like you were in Santorini. We even had a live performance from authentic Greek signers who happened to be in town.”
For Russ Ford, President of the Board and a founding member, the most enjoyable part of the gala was visiting with guests and being part of a team that impacts the lives of those less fortunate. “The mission of the gala is to raise awareness and support both local identified charities and various Orthodox Christian Ministries. This year’s event was very special as we raised over $200,000, the most in our history. Both Penelope House and the ministries will receive over $100,000 to help people in need. It’s very special to work with enthusiastic and caring people that want to make a positive impact not only locally, but across the world,” he tells us.
In its sixth year, Russ, a commercial banking executive at First Horizon Bank, further explains, “We’ve raised and distributed over $738,000 to Orthodox Christian Ministries and local charities such as Penelope House, Prichard Preparatory School, Victory Health Partners, The Learning Tree and NEST. We’ve also partnered with the Orthodox Christian Network (OCN) to help people impacted by the ongoing war in Ukraine. We do this so we can provide children access to the best education to prepare them for college, and to help victims of intimate partner violence gain social and economic independence through shelter, counseling, advocacy and referrals to community resources and agencies. We also work to provide affordable, quality health care to thousands of uninsured adults and to deliver educational, residential and support services for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. And, lastly, we also aim to serve the needs of at-risk youth and families to transform communities. “
After moving to Mobile in 2016, Ryane and Scott, her husband, were asked by his uncle, Greg Saad, to become members of the gala board. “The event is always stunning! Every year the look changes and a new theme emerges. And, then there’s the work. The Penelope House is a special place in Mobile, and we know the funds will go directly to the women and children they serve in their shelter. OCN publishes videos and podcasts that bring joy to almost a million people each month in 190 countries, and we feel it’s an important cause at this time. Not being Greek, we didn’t know what we were getting into, but we jumped right in! After 6 years, we still love being involved and meeting so many great people from our community. It’s a wonderful way to feel connected and all are welcome!” she concludes.

FLU SHOT AWARENESS
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW
It’s safe to say some people have tuned out the need for yet another shot. With reason for concern, Dr. Patrick Murphy, with Alabama Medical Group fills us in on why the flu shot is so important. As we head into the season of celebrations that have us everywhere from the crowded streets to the jam-packed dance floors, perhaps one more shot is worthy of consideration.
The bad news is that the flu literally kills tens of thousands of people each year. The good news is that the flu shot can prevent severe cases of the flu that are associated with those deaths. While many may still get the flu after getting the shot, it’s important to know they’re much less likely to need medical care and hospitalization. Interestingly, Australia had its worst flu season in five years. Because they experience winter before we do, what happens there can be a sign of what’s ahead for us. And, no, it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
It’s recommended that everyone six months and older get a flu shot each year as scientists change the composition to match the flu viruses in circulation that season. While the best time to get vaccinated is by the end of October, before peak flu season, getting vaccinated at any point during flu season, or before March, will still provide important protection. Many conditions such as pneumonia often start as the flu, especially if you’re older or have a chronic illness.
body to a weakened form of the virus. This allows you to mount an immune response, which is why some people may feel ill after getting the vaccine. When you get the flu shot, you’re not just protecting yourself—you’re protecting your family, friends, and everyone else in your community. And, that is precisely what the team at AMG is here to help you do.
Even if you’re young and healthy, and have never had the flu before, it’s important to get your flu shot. The flu is a miserable disease and it’s worth avoiding. It’s also possible for young, healthy people to have the flu with mild or no symptoms, and to unknowingly spread it to people who are at risk of more serious problems. This includes children under two, adults 65 and older, and people who are pregnant or have an ongoing health condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.
The numbers don’t lie. Prior to the pandemic, a 2018 study found that flu vaccination among adults reduced the risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit with flu by 59%. Some people may be concerned with getting both the updated Covid-19 booster and the flu vaccines, however bundling them together is easy as well as safe.
We’re often asked about the side effects of the flu shot and the answer is that the vaccine takes two weeks to be effective, so people could still contract the flu during this period. The vaccine exposes your

Always on the lookout for new local businesses, our own Southern influencer and self-professed party snob, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, struck event gold when she stumbled into Olde Towne Daphne’s newest shop, Pop and Pour Party Co. Brimming with goodies so on point, her social spirit soared instantly. Naturally, she struck up a conversation with the owners, Jena Yaeger and Lesley Hendon. Seemingly separated at birth, the trio excitedly talked all things entertaining and became fast friends. Here, Charlotte enlightens and inspires us with her party past and what she learned from her new sisters in entertaining solidarity.

“WE OFTEN JOKE THAT WE’D LOVE TO HAVE A SNAPSHOT OF PEOPLE’S REACTIONS WHEN THEY ENTER THE STORE. IT’S ALWAYS THE LOOK OF ABSOLUTE HAPPINESS—EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED.”
28
Like so many of us Southern belles raised in a large family, weeknight dinners were always a party and a production. So naturally, when I was just 5 years old, my mother started letting me plan my birthday parties. And, birthdays have been the most important celebrations ever since. In my 20s, my friend Laura and I would throw ourselves huge birthday bashes in our little midtown homes. The hottest ticket in town, we always served batches of Sangria made from cheap wine in my mother’s posh punch bowl. Everyone loved it! After my parents separated, I began the tradition of hosting holiday gatherings at my home. Everyone loves being together, and I’m still going strong 30 years later.
My first son, Clark, was born on Halloween, and so began the themed parties. Thinking everyone dressed up for him, the legacy of celebrating your big day was easily passed down to the next generation. I think I threw my final one last year after 31 years of making mummy dogs and Franken-guac. My daughter, Camille, had elaborate themes from princess jumpy castles and farm animals to cultural experiences from around the world. We even had a Quinceañera on her 15th. birthday. Luckily, my youngest, Charles had a superhero obsession and a summer birthday which made pool parties a no-brainer. With countless life-size Spiderman balloons, I should have bought my own helium tank long ago.
Simply put, I’ve always loved to entertain. It’s my love language and I’m happiest surrounded by dear friends. I insist on having a great time, and I want everyone around me to have a wonderful time, too. As an overachiever and perfectionist, I try not to sweat the small stuff. I’ve come up with a formula, and my number one rule and starting point is always choosing a theme. I follow it precisely for everything from the invitations and decorations to the cocktail, floral, and menu selections. Ionce had a pink party, and even the rare beef tenderloin was topped with a pink peppercorn sauce! I always serve a signature cocktail to guests as they arrive to set the tone, too. Even for girlfriend gatherings, I like to have a vibe and sometimes give happies to my guests. These gestures make even small get togethers more intimate and memorable.
With the goal of curating an unforgettable party, a seasoned host will leave no stone unturned. And, over the years it’s been hard to find specialty party items to make the grandiose events in my mind a reality. I’ve spent countless hours in the big box stores and scrolling through the mega-sites. Unfortunately, those party sources only take you so far and typically disappoint.
So, after repeatedly driving past Pop and Pour Party Co. in Olde Towne Daphne, I finally made an appointment with myself to check it out. I mean, who wouldn’t be drawn in by the hot pink shopping cart filled with disco balls on the front walkway?
A self-professed party snob, my advice before your next event is to run, not walk, to Pop and Pour Party Co. You can thank me later. It’s as if these boss babe entrepreneurs, Jena and Lesley, can read my detail obsessed mind! It was love at first sight, they had me at hello. In all seriousness, they’ve beautifully filled a black hole in the local social gathering marketplace. A feast for the eyes, they’ve literally thought of everything. And, in the name of transparency, I was super impressed when I saw one of my favorite (and secret) brands on their shelves.
Both mothers of school age children, Jena is originally from North Carolina and relocated to Alabama in 2008. Married to Ron, they have three children; Grant, James, and Janey. From Alabama, Lesley moved to the Eastern Shore in 2021 with her husband, Jake, and together they share three children; Blakely, Aubrie, and Mason. Interestingly, prior to opening, they were both in the industry. Jena owned Alabama Sleepy Teepee and Fairpoppers Balloon Boutique, and Lesley owned Tap & Pour. When they kept running into one another at local events, they struck up a friendship over collaborative discussions. In agreement the area needed an elevated party store, they decided to operate under one roof when they both saw the same “For Lease” sign last spring.

LESLEY HENDON
Explaining the concept and mission of the store, Jena tells us, “We’re a one-stop-shop where customers can effortlessly find elevated party supplies and unique gifts. We like to think we’re the happiest retail space on the Eastern Shore! With everything you need for your happiest celebrations, both big and small, that feeling of frivolity begins right here.” Chiming in, Lesley adds, “We provide things you won’t find anywhere else. Naturally, we carry classic brands like Meri Meri and Jollity & Co., while bringing in new, fun brands like My Mind’s Eye, Slant, Talking Tables, and Oh Happy Day. They all offer a fresh take and quality is the consistent thread. If we haven’t used it, or wouldn’t, we don’t offer it.”
Thrilled to meet my matches, and with their flair and talents immediately on full display, this duo couldn’t be any more delightful. “We often joke that we’d love to have a snapshot of people’s reactions when they enter the store. It’s always the look of absolute happiness—exactly what we wanted. Plus, party planning can be stressful and we want to make it fun. We’re here to help no matter how long it takes to find that perfect combo of party supplies,” Jena beams. Offering every color in the rainbow, Lesly adds, “One of the best things about our brands is their absolute dedication to themes. It’s enchanting to see the different touches that elevate them from drab and tired to exciting and new. For example, our Piratethemed section has a cup kit that turns paper cups into pirate ships, the Princess-themed section has party hats with tulle accents, and the Boho-section has precious paper flower party favor glasses. Our themes are truly one of our favorite parts of our boutique.”
Getting more specific about the holiday goodies in store, Lesley tells us, “The selection is endless. Everyone loves the Holiball line of inflatable indoor and outdoor Christmas ball ornaments. And, kids flip for the Sparkle Syrup by Runamok, mini bedazzled boom boxes by Trend Tech, CandyLab toy cars, Bewaltz telephone purses, BlaBla handknit stuffed animals, the Polar Express party themed items like the train ticket napkins, and the paper party flags by Cami Monet. For the ladies, we adore the Ryan Portier candles, the Packed Party snowman sipper that holds an entire bottle of wine, Musee bath products, Laura Park Duffle Bags, LuLu Belt Bag Dupes, and jewelry from Taylor Shaye, Sunshine Tienda, and more. For the gents, you can’t go wrong with the Runamok Maple Bitters, Camp Craft Cocktail Kits, and Cocktail Co. Old Fashioned sugar cubes. We even offer fun pet products like a stuffed White Claw cans and “Vive Clawquet” stuffed Champagne bottles by Haute Diggity Dog, too.”
As for specific services, Jena adds, “Fairpoppers is more than just a copy and paste balloon company - we pride ourselves on bespoke balloon decor for every order. From large corporate functions to the walk-in bal-

loon bouquet requests, being part of a celebration is such an honor. We go above and beyond to ensure our balloon decor elevates and adds joy to each and every event. Not only have we sourced the longest-lasting balloons available, we’re also proud they’re biodegradable, too. And, yes, in addition to grab-and-go at the store, we deliver and install garlands, too.”
If you meet Lesley, you’ll see she doesn’t do boring. “When I started Tap & Pour, I knew I wanted something different and I literally searched the world until I found what I wanted. Sourced in Italy, the Piaggio mini trucks are essentially mobile bars that even come with a tap-tender to serve a customizable drink menu. The sweet cotton candy cart was built to my specifications and boasts a pink and white umbrella, making it picture perfect. Everything can be personalized from the snow cone cart and Instagram-ready ball pits to the fringe backdrops and the various pristine bounce houses. We even have a Glowforge 3D laser printer to create custom acrylic swizzle sticks, cake toppers, signs, and more.”
A fan of hiring experts when possible, Jena and Lesley are available for complete party design, too. With a natural eye and the experience to curate any celebration, their happy to help you plan your next party. Regarding their top tips, Jena shares, “Never underestimate how much decor can elevate a space and an experience. Even a simple fringe birth-
day sign can make a small family party even more festive. And, don’t underestimate how many guests you’ll have. You can always return unopened packages of party goods or use them for your family afterwards. We love to use seasonal or themed paper plates for everyday use for our families.” Lesley wisely adds, “Be sure to set your budget and stick to it! We offer a range of prices because it’s hard to enjoy your party if you’re worried about overspending.”
When asked about what they’re looking forward to, they laugh in unison saying, “Our Dolly Parton and disco cowgirl themed party goods!” Regarding the reaction to the store overall, they share, “The response has been absolutely astounding. We knew the store was needed, but the outpouring of support from the community has been more than we ever expected! We’re so grateful because who else gets to make people happy every single day?” As we primped, laughed, and bounced our way through the photoshoot, I became over the moon excited as I dreamed about new themes for occasions to celebrate with my new Pop and Pour friends. Just in time to ring in 2023, I’m ready to party!

A national obsession, who are we to argue with the hashtag, #nails, and the 151 million posts on Instagram? Whether you prefer clean and simple or bold and beautiful, manicures have become an artform that’s clearly here to stay. Even the manicurist has become a celebrity in their own right, too. Luckily, Mobile’s own nail-pro, Catherine Hannahan, is here to share a few of her tip-top holiday trends that will prepare you to sleigh.

“I OFFER A UNIQUE AND PERSONAL SETTING WHERE MY CLIENTS CAN RELAX AND FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH A ONE-ON-ONE EXPERIENCE.”
For most of us, the idea of taking a little sliver of time to pamper ourselves is simply delicious. And, a manicure seems to do the trick. Around for thousands of years, and once reserved for only the very wealthy, a manicure is downright common today. And, what’s not to love? They’re relatively fast, affordable and last longer than a spray tan. Our biggest decisions range from square or round, long or short, red or pink, and so on. From there, we’re able to sit back and soak up the selfcare as time seems to stop just for a few precious moments.
However, a powerful cuticle culture has evolved and elevated a manicure to an headline making artform. From Jennifer Lopez’s new greige neutral polish affectionately referred to as “rich girl” to Hailey Bieber’s famous glazed donut nails, we’ve seen a variety of manicure
styles go viral throughout the year. No longer just for A-listers, perhaps you might enjoy a festive mani, too. After all, it’s easy to stick to your go-to colors, shapes, and styles during the holiday hustle and bustle. But, if you’re ready to shake things up and consider trying a new nail trend, local nail artist and expert, Catherine Hannahan, is serving up styles from the festive and feminine to the glitzy and daring.
For Catherine, every day is different—just the way she likes it. “I took an interest in art at a very young age. Interestingly, my paintings and drawings have always been extremely intricate and detailed which naturally translates into my ability to create beautiful nails. I love what I do and this career choice has allowed me to express my creativity. No two days are alike and it’s so fun to collaborate with clients,” she tells us.
As for what’s trending this holiday season, Catherine shares, “For the most part, square and round are still around but almond and coffin shapes are extremely popular. Polish trends range from Ombre and glitter to colored French tips and even artistic lines. Really, anything that looks custom or a bit over the top and creative goes.” Acknowledging it takes true technique and talent, we wonder how she accomplishes these tiny treasures. “I can’t give away all my secrets, but perfectly preparing the nails, a steady hand, proper tools, and attention to detail are extremely helpful. Also, listening to what the client has in mind is essential,” she adds.
If you’re looking to serve up seconds and cradle a favorite glass of vino with flair, detailed designs with Catherine can take up to two hours and a simpler manicure takes approximately 45 minutes. Prices start at $45 and go up accordingly. “I offer a unique and personal setting where
my clients can relax and feel comfortable with a one-on-one experience. The most rewarding part of my job is satisfying customers and seeing them leave happy. Knowing I’ve brought joy to someone’s day brings me joy, too.”

Springhillians have much to celebrate as POST opens their second location: POST on the Hill! With its well-known craft cocktails and mouth-watering pairings, owner Matt LeMond is ecstatic to fill a much-needed void in this fun-loving, tightknit community.

To know him is to love him…and the various conceptions and cocktails he’s constantly dreaming up. Matt LeMond, owner of POST, O’Daly’s Irish Pub, the Insider • a collective eatery, the Outsider • sports lounge, and Cedar Street Social, has taken on yet another venture, bringing the be - loved atmosphere and craft cocktails of POST to the village of Spring Hill, opening POST on the Hill this past November.
When speaking to loyal Spring Hill POST fans, and trust us there are many, they would say it has been a long time coming for something like this to make its way to their neck of the woods. “Through endless conversations with loyal POST customers, the topic of growth and expansion has been a constant. In knowing a handful of Springhillians and getting to know many more through the POST downtown location, there seemed to be a void that our type of business could fill,” shares Matt. “When the Old Shell location became available, we knew it would be a great addition to the POST brand and a great opportunity that we could not pass up.”
POST’s post office theme is well recognized, and Matt wanted to ensure this new location boasted that same feeling, but with a new, fresh twist. Working again with the talented Katie Kirby Interiors, Katie and Matt were able to create a space similar to the original location while also painting a new picture. “We placed a lot of our attention on the back bar and what we like to call a ‘blue out,’” Matt tells us.
“WHEN THE OLD SHELL LOCATION BECAME AVAILABLE, WE KNEW IT WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE POST BRAND AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY THAT WE COULD NOT PASS UP.”
60
And, much like the downtown location, POST on the Hill will serve as an amazing rental space for all of your event needs. “We are delighted to be able to offer indoor and outdoor event space opportunities to the Springhill area. POST thrives when we can create events like our cocktail classes, wine pairing course, and specialty dinner nights, all of which are a part of our future! The goal is to create a place for specialty cocktails and delicious shareables while providing a space for memorable experiences for all of our customers.”
What Matt loves the most about this new location is the neighborhood aspect and feeling of Spring Hill. “We want POST to be a part of that! Whether you walk, bike, or arrive in a golf cart, we want each customer to feel like they are part of the community,” remarks Matt. “Starting my time in Mobile at Spring Hill College it feels very special to be back and part of this community. This area has so much potential, and we are excited to be included in the growth.”
So much thought, time, and planning went into bringing this space to life, but Matt wants everyone to know it has become a reality thanks to the loyalty of POST’s customers.
“POST is only as great as its customer support. The amazing community that supports us and challenges us to create daring cocktails and menu items continues to excite our loyal following,” he humbly shares. “I am overwhelmed and humbled by the support and encouragement of the community. Coming out of COVID-19 there was some uncertainty of growing the POST brand. So, to have this level of incredible response has been very motivating and encouraging to us.” They can’t wait to POST up with you!

LET US SAY GRACE
With its mission of providing upscale food and service in a casual atmosphere, Grace is a one-of-a-kind experience happening now in Downtown Mobile. With its gourmet menu, hand crafted cocktails, and of course, the unbeatable view from the rooftop bar, it’s a must on you to-dine list. They can’t wait to say “grace” with you.

What once was a decrepit abandoned building is now home to Downtown Mobile’s newest restaurant and bar, Grace, the ultra chic brainchild of owners Noell Broughton and David Shipman who spent years working diligently behind the scenes to bring their creative vision to life. Wendell Quimby, who was waiting for that “just right” business venture to walk through the door, first purchased the building where Grace now sits years ago, and he found that perfect venture in the ever creative Noell and David. “The moment I walked into the building I knew what was possible,” recalls Noell. “The eye beams in tact were perfect to sustain a rooftop bar. It took two years of getting the right permitting in place before I could say go, but once that happened we hit the ground running.”
The concept and theme of Grace gives a nod to the Catholic Social Services that once called the space home for decades. Now, Heaven and Hell, light and dark, meet in the middle to create an atmosphere mixed with heavenly food and sinfully handcrafted cocktails. When you first enter, you’re greeted with an open floor plan dining room, complete with curated elements such as custom whiskey barrel lighting. The large windows fully swing open onto the street helping marry the inside and outside into a perfect blend of peaceful cacophony. A gorgeous red mahogany bar top, booths and table seating gives a subtle nod to Grace’s theme and the man downstairs. “Using red elements throughout was very important to creating the desired look and feel of Grace. We even have our red halo logo featured floating on the top of some of our craft cocktails,” says Noell. “The logo was originally just a halo but my wife, Elizabeth, came up with the idea of adding horns to it just before it was finalized. It was the perfect touch and helped visualize the concept.”
Dale Taylor - Regional Manager, Mark Strickland - Executive Chef, David Shipman - Co-owner, Noell Broughton - Co-owner
“THE EYE BEAMS IN TACT WERE PERFECT TO SUSTAIN A ROOFTOP BAR. IT TOOK TWO YEARS OF GETTING THE RIGHT PERMITTING IN PLACE BEFORE I COULD SAY GO, BUT ONCE THAT HAPPENED WE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.”
64
But perhaps the best part of all is that Grace boasts Downtown Mobile’s first rooftop bar, offering the same heavenly food and devilish cocktails, but with a side of sweeping views. With its large couch seating, whiskey barrel tables, full bar, outdoor televisions, fire tables, and of course, the best sunset view in town, there’s no surprise Grace’s rooftop has quickly become the hottest hangout in town.
Though many patrons have come for the promised rooftop view, they’ve come back time and again for the food. The talented Chef Mark Strickland, who has been great friends with Noell since the fifth grade, has dreamed up the perfect gourmet menu. Chef Mark boasts a career that started here in Mobile but then took him to Aspen, CO where he worked for two James Beard Award Winning Chefs. In 2002 Noell offered Mark an opportunity to come back to Mobile and help him open Cafe 615, and the rest is history. Since then these two have been dominating the local culinary scene and are excited to offer this “Gourmet Goes Casual” concept now in Downtown Mobile. Their belief is that you shouldn’t have to be dressed formally to enjoy upscale food.
On the menu you can find dishes like Veal and Goat Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms, Pan Roasted Duck Breast, Lamb Shank Osso Bucco, and Crawfish Mac & Cheese to name a few. Consider our mouths watering!
Though they’ve only been up for a short while, Grace has already taken the Downtown scene by storm. Currently open for dinner and lunch, they’re assiduously working on perfecting a brunch like no other. Soon, they will also be offering live music and other fun elements— there’s much to come for Grace! “We want you to feel wowed yet comfortable. Grace is truly a one-of-a-kind experience for Downtown Mobile. We don’t put on airs, but our food and drinks would have you thinking otherwise,” boasts Noell.
When asked how it feels to see such tremendous growth in Downtown Mobile, Noell says, “For 27 years we have been a part of Downtown Mobile and helping it grow. As always, I love to see the city I call home expand and being an integral part of that for almost three decades keeps me smiling and motivated every day. We feel like Grace is just another incredible addition to the positive growth in downtown Mobile and we look forward to watching and contributing to the future growth of our hometown.” And to that, we say, “Amen!”

DIEGMANN & HENDERSON OBGYN
It’s not every day we meet such an insightful, driven, and community minded young man. And, at just 24 years old, that’s exactly what Danner Butler is. The grandson of Jacque and Judge Randy Butler, and the son of Kathrine and Warren Butler, it’s safe to say he’s been a witness to and inspired by generations of kindness. Proving the future is bright, this busy medical student has taken the lead to make a difference and live by example as he goes from witness to influencer.

DANNER BUTLER
66
Raised in Mobile, and smart as a whip, Danner graduated from Washington and Lee University with a degree in biochemistry and a minor in math. Currently a second-year medical student at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Danner plans to pursue a career in neurosurgery with a fellowship in skull-based procedures. “When I was 14, my father fractured his skull in a car accident and a neurosurgeon saved his life. Since then, I’ve wanted to help someone the way that surgeon helped our family,” Danner explains.
As I spoke with Danner, I was awestruck by his manners, maturity and compassionate nature. And, come to find out that just as the Access team has long admired the best-friend-duo comprised of Jacque Butler and Mother Ruby, Danner has also been shaped by this profound friendship. Proof our children watch us, his story strikes a chord.
Mother Ruby of Pure Word Ministries is one astounding woman. A life-long resident of Prichard, Mother Ruby is perhaps best known for pulling children off the street and into her kitchen to teach them everything from reading and arithmetic to bible verses and what it felt like
to be loved. Looking to grow a sustainable program for these children, she was able to solicit the help of Sandy Stimpson, now the Mayor of Mobile. Together, they were able to make the dream a reality, and Prichard Preparatory School opened in 2008 with the goal of ensuring local students receive a top-notch education to prepare for college.
At Mother Ruby’s side was Jacque, Danner’s grandmother. Together, they’ve provided endless improvements and opportunities for what often feels like a forgotten part of our community. Notorious for poverty and crime, and for being economically isolated from Mobile, Mother Ruby and Jacque were able to secure funds for a children’s center through Pure Word Ministries that gives local children a place to go after school for safety and community.
Growing up around this twosome, the ladies made quite the impact on Danner. “Few words can describe the kind and giving nature of my grandmother. I was fortunate to be introduced to the Pure Word community at a young age as she led a group in restoring houses for those families. I’m lucky to keep up with many of those people today, including Mother Ruby. Their work is part the reason I chose to become a physician and help others,” Danner shares.
With a strong belief in praying it forward, even Mother Ruby and Jacque couldn’t have believed what was to come. “After leaving campus one day, I found myself pulling into the Pure Word parking lot before I knew it. In medical school for a few months, I had a calling to do more as I felt the children had been overlooked. So, with the help of classmates, we started an after-school tutoring program at the children’s center. Starting with three tutors and six students, we now have over 50 students and have had 20 tutors from USA. It’s been truly amazing to see this develop,” Danner explains.
Deciding to pop by the center, it was instantly obvious this is a special program led by a spectacular group of young friends. Perhaps one of the humblest people I’ve met, Danner insists on sharing credit with his friends and fellow classmates, Parker Norman, Eric Broadfoot, Mathew Kelley, and his roommate, Jack Citrin. Realizing the girls showing up for tutoring needed young women to relate to, Danner reached out to his female friends and classmates, Regan Shaw, Anna Shunnarah and Sarah Blackstock. Clearly, busy doesn’t begin to describe the life of a medical school student. Each with their own internships and full class schedules that require endless hours of study, they all jumped in to help when approached by Danner.
As I made my way around the tutoring sessions, happiness was the common denominator. As a reward for good work, the tutoring team even allowed the students to paint their nails after a job well done—including the guys. With laughter all around, the results of a seemingly simple idea were more than visible and it just felt good to be there. “This is a God thing. What these young people are doing is so incredible. They all have a heavy work load and there’s nothing in this for them. That they use their precious time to come to this place and work so hard shows just how determined they are to not only become doctors, but to become caring doctors that impact the community—it’s clearly a calling,” Mother Ruby shares.
Kindly disagreeing with Mother Ruby, they all feel they’re learning so much more than they are teaching. “In school, we talk about barriers to health care. But that’s just talk. Here, we are figuring out first hand to how to work through the hard stuff while exploring specific aspects of care that will help each of us determine our medical paths,” Anna tells us. Danner’s roommate Jack agrees, sharing, “I told Danner on my first day that it’s as fun as being a camp counselor. I often ask myself if I’m as smart as a 5th grader because math has really changed! Joking aside, it’s so rewarding to see a child go from getting scores in the 40’s to getting 80’s, and even 100’s. They realize they can succeed, and many of them want to go to college.” Seeing beyond the books, Eric states, “We also help the children organize their schedules, prepare for the ACT’s, and foster a positive perspective on education.” Raising a great point Regan adds, “If a child struggles in class, especially publicly, it can deter their education and how they feel about school. We try to make learning a fun and positive experience.”
On that note, Parker chimes in sharing, “A lot of children have dreams of becoming a professional athlete, just as many of us did. Our goal is to show additional options in the form of education. And, because we’re young, we have the ability to make education

cool!” In agreement, Sarah adds, “The kids are incredibly bright and excited to learn. It’s so encouraging to see them become more confident and interested in academics. They’re excited to tell us their grades!” Mathew reveals, “At an impressionable age, we let them know school is a great deterrent for drugs and alcohol, too.” Compelled to add her wisdom, Mother Ruby explains that while Prichard is a tough place to live, parents truly care about their children’s education. However, they struggle in the time department as many have several jobs just to keep food on the table.
Every bit a beaming grandmother, Jacque tells us, “I started bringing Danner to the children’s center at a young age. He became our handy man at 15 years old! Exposure to Ruby helped grow his heart. And, while I’m not surprised by what he’s doing, I am surprised by the timing since he’s in medical school. He just takes initiative and gets things done. He’s a true gift.” Blushing Danner responds, “I have a great family that exposed me to a scene different from Spring Hill and midtown. The name Mother Ruby goes a long way and she showed me how far good character and intentional efforts can get you. We have a very deep bond.”
Spending time with the children and their parents, Danner and his classmates realized another way they could help the community. Referred to as a medical desert, Prichard has many health care barriers in that services are limited. Considering it’s surrounded by various industrial complexes that can create health challenges, access to care is essential. Knowing many of these families are stretched thin financially and otherwise, they got to work.
Deciding to meet people where they are, the team set up a health check station at a local church. From those interactions, they were easily able to detect high blood pressure and diabetes in several congregants. With this knowledge, the team was able to bring attention to health conditions and where the participants could go for affordable treatment. A game changer for those who we’re simply hoping for the best, the team of students knew they were on the right track.
With the hopes of establishing a free clinic where residents can get basic health care screenings and tests, they shared their idea with Mother Ruby and she offered space in the children’s center. “Luckily, Jack is an intern at Victory Health and suggested a partnership since they provide services based on income. On board, we can refer patients to them once diagnosed at our clinic. Creating this simple path to care, we hope to open in January,” Danner explains. “This is a win-win for everyone considering Victory Health was looking to expand. Plus, we can help kids academically and medically in one place. Their parents can get health care services while the children get tutored, too,” Anna adds.
Interestingly, there’s a strong female component as well. “Caring for others is at the core of medicine. One of the most essential ways we could raise awareness is through women’s health. Women typically require more tests and screenings than men, and there are a lot of single mothers caring for both the young and elderly in Prichard. Realizing women’s health is of great importance not only to their families, but to the community as a whole, we look forward to helping them lead healthy and happy lives,” Danner tells us.
With a soft spot for my fellow females, and wanting to pitch in, I reached out to my friends at the Afya Foundation. Based in New York, their work is brilliant. Most people are surprised to learn that operating rooms are typically stocked with every conceivable medical supply for every procedure—no matter how simple—in case of an emergency. While most supplies are packaged and sealed, due to strict regulations, hospitals are required to throw all of the unused supplies away after each procedure. Shockingly, this adds up to over $700 billion worth of usable medical supplies annually.
So, Afya works with various hospitals to rescue the usable supplies and sends them to places like Ukraine, Florida, Puerto Rico and more, that are under resourced or in times of disaster. Having rescued over 11.6 million lbs. of usable medical and humanitarian supplies from landfill, Afya offers purpose and preparedness opportunities to thousands of volunteers with developmental disabilities as well as veterans and nonviolent offenders released from prison. A beautiful trifecta! Knowing people can’t be helped without costly medical supplies and that healthier people drive more robust economies, Afya is gearing up to help Danner and the team with everything from gloves and gowns to durable equipment like blood pressure machines and more. Receiving free supplies will allow them to fulfill their mission and conserve what funds they raise for other essentials. “Our clinic and tutoring program are run purely from donations. Therefore, any supplies in either field would be incredibly helpful. We’re also are working on providing patient transportation options, too,” Danner exclaims.
Getting personal, Danner concludes, “As humans, we find true joy bringing others joy. It’s incredible how much these children teach us and to see their joy despite difficult situations. This is my favorite part of the week and I hope to pass it on to a younger classmate who can continue to develop what we’ve started. All volunteers are welcome as a lot of us are searching for a purpose. And, what better purpose is there than to help others? The more our community continues to unite, the stronger it becomes.”
I for one am all in and the holiday season presents the perfect opportunity to make a difference and dig into the joy. As I’ve done in the past, I will cart my kids off to a home for many forgotten elderlies in Prichard to pass goodies like homemade cookies and socks for a reminder of gratitude, and then hit the center with tutoring supplies. It really does take a village, so, whether you’re handy with a hammer, feeling philanthropic and would like to donate funds, or have a drawer full of unused pencils to share, we’d love to have you become a part of it. I’ll make pickups—seriously. Hmm, is the start a new Village People? Either way, I’m hoping this is just the beginning of a beautiful story about the entire Mobile community.

PEACE, LOVE & PEONIES
‘Tis the season and our expert horticulturist, Ewa Wiggins of Stokley Garden Express Midtown, tells us about all the lush holiday décor in store, the key to lasting greenery and all the Fa La La in between! With dreams of sugar plum fairies and mantles draped in abundant garlands and glimmering trees dripping with ornaments, it’s time to cue the elves and let the fun begin.
Hello!
Decking our halls during this festive time of year is one of life’s greatest joys. From the porch and doorways to the fireplace and staircase, creating special spaces for bonding with family and friends inspires most of us to go to great lengths. And, naturally, greenery plays a big role. Interestingly, decorating with fresh greenery is one of the oldest holiday traditions and has been part of winter festivals since ancient times.
Representing everlasting life and hope for the return of spring, Southerners have been decorating with greenery since the colonial days. Churches were decorated elaborately with garlands of holly, fir, mountain laurel, and mistletoe hung from the roof, walls, and pews. Lavender, rose petals, and herbs, such as rosemary, were scattered for scent. Inspired, congregants brought these traditions into their homes, too. Lavender represents rest and relaxation, while Rosemary represents love and remembrance. We have exceptional rosemary cones and lavender trees available that will add a delicious layer of fragrance in your home.
From the Poinsettias and Christmas Cactus to the garlands, swags and wreaths, we take pride in not only offering the freshest around, but in the memory making too. With plentiful photo-ops, we offer holiday magic around every corner. Children and adults will be delighted to explore our vast selection of ornaments and Christmas décor. Imported from Canada, our Christmas trees arrived covered in ice and snow and are the freshest we’ve ever seen—what a scent! And, don’t forget to bring us your large planters for custom holiday planting.
The key to lasting holiday trees and greenery is buying from a reputable supplier that’s committed to customer satisfaction. While you may find deals at the big box stores, they may result in short lived, needle-shedding disappointment due to how early they’re harvested. It’s about freshness, and if your greenery is already dry when you buy it, it’s not going to look good for long. Select greens that are supple, flexible, and not shedding needles. They should be a vibrant green color, not greyish. And, of course, ensuring your tree has plenty of fresh water and greens are misted frequently will go a long way in optimizing their health and fragrance.
Every part of holiday decorating should be enjoyable. I can say without a doubt that we go above and beyond to provide the freshest plants and décor as well as a wonderful experience for our guests. We have fun surprises planed for the community so be sure to follow us on social media, too. With a green thumbs up, we wish you all a happy holiday season full of love, laughter, and long-lasting lush décor!
Peace, love and peonies, Ewa

A board-certified OB/GYN at Women’s Health Alliance of Mobile, Dr. Jessica Jones is not only passionate about caring for expecting mothers, she’s deeply dedicated to the benefits of genetic testing. With a personal story of her own, she opens up to share an important experience and message.
By Dr. Jessica Jones
Greetings!
Today, modern medicine offers cutting-edge technology that allows us to discern genetic abnormalities in patients and their unborn children. As an OB/GYN, it’s so important that my patients understand their risks for carrying a genetic disease in order to protect themselves, and their loved ones, from preventable disease. For me, this is a personal passion because I’m a carrier for a very rare genetic disease. My son, Henry, has Spinal muscular atrophy, a very rare genetic disorder that affects 1 out of 10,000 people. We were able to get him life changing genetic medicine due to the testing. Furthermore, my husband, Trey, and I are able to make the decision to pursue IVF in the future to ensure we don’t pass this to our other children. Lastly, we’ve recommend testing to our extended family members too.
With a very small blood sample from the mother, we can gather enough genetic material for testing. We can also detect if a mother is a carrier for a genetic problem in order to help her prevent passing it to her future children. And, we can detect if a patient has genes that put them more at risk for various cancers and help them take preventative steps.
These tests can be life altering as genetic diseases can be common. They can also save you from having to undergo invasive procedures. For instance, we can now detect if a baby has Down syndrome at 10 weeks’ gestation. Before, we had to wait until a mom was able to do an amniocentesis, which included puncturing the amniotic sac. Interestingly, up to 10% of African American women are at risk for sickle cell trait. Conversely, cystic fibrosis is more common in Caucasian women. Family history is so important, but not always available. Adopted patients might like to be tested to learn more about their risk factors.
I strongly advise talking about genetic testing with your health care provider and I can’t over emphasize how important it to have an experienced practitioner in this arena. While scary, most patients are surprised to learn genetic testing isn’t routine. Yet, it’s typically very affordable if not covered by insurance and can make the difference between life and death. Plus, a negative test can be very reassuring! We have such a talented team and wonderful genetic counselors who can help you make these decisions, too.

Making Your Money MATTER
From diets to deep cleaning, the end of the year is a prime time for setting goals and resolutions. For financial advisor, Justin Law, it’s his greatest wish that we all take time to consider and evaluate our finances. Regardless if you’re actively saving and investing or if you’ve never given it a thought, this is the perfect time for a financial check-up, too.
I’m a big believer in fresh starts. I’m also familiar with the fears that can paralyze even the most determined from taking those first steps towards creating a plan for their future financial security. Experience tells me the biggest fear people have is that if they sit down with a professional, they’ll immediately be asked for their entire financial history and to hand everything over right then and there. But, for me, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
When I meet with a potential client, I like to allow plenty of time for us to get to know one another. I also congratulate them for showing up because I know people can be skeptical of working with a professional to help them maximize their financial situation. I like to point out that we all pay for services we are not ourselves trained for—think doctors, personal trainers, realtors and more. That often triggers an ah-ha moment as the financial industry is not only one of the most complicated, it constantly changes.
From there, I like to share my philosophies about money and ask clients about theirs to ensure we are aligned. Obviously, these conversations vary. A younger client and I might discuss the concept of money, and even generational successes and failures as family dynamics can play a major role in how we view money. Reframing the opportunity to save and eliminating the fears they won’t be able to pay their bills or take a vacation typically leaves people feeling optimistic and excited. An older prospect may be suspicious that I’m going to try to sell them something—I’ve heard this repeatedly. But, my approach is drastically different.
For starters, I share what I’ve learned works and doesn’t work. I’m open about my financial journey. There’s no judgement as there’s lots of moving parts in everyone’s financial story Some may have financial pieces that haven’t been laid out to see how they could work together. Things like an old pension plan, insurance policies or retirement accounts are often put aside and forgotten about because our lives move so fast. Slowing people down to figure out their individual financial puzzle is often one of my biggest challenges.
Clearly, there is no cookie cutter plan as no two people’s finances are the same. And, once people realize I’m on their side, truly qualified with a team of experts, and that we can craft a painless plan to build the financially secure future they’re hoping for together, I can literally see them breathe easier. Watching the weight of worry fall to wayside and excitement for the future build are the most rewarding aspects of my work. So, as we flip our calendars forward, just know I’d love to meet you to discuss making 2023 a great year!
Until Next Time, Justin Law

Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Learn to recognize your triggers so you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. Here, Sydney Wasdin M.Ed., LPC, NCC, RYT of True Yoga + Therapy, shares her top tips to help you find peace and joy this holiday season.
By Sydney
Hello,!
The holidays are peak season for mental health issues. Thankfully, it’s common knowledge that this can be a difficult time for many people who may be facing everything from loneliness and depression to addiction and difficult family members.
For starters, it’s crucial to be realistic. The holidays can leave us feeling depleted—physically and emotionally. It’s important we remind ourselves they don’t have to be perfect. As families grow, traditions and rituals often change, too. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones that involve your own enjoyment.
Perhaps one of my top tips is learning to say no. A complete sentence in its own right, saying yes when you mean no can leave you feeling even worse. If you feel remorse when saying yes, that indicates you’re going against what your body and mind are telling you. Learning to be true to yourself is the greatest gift. If a gathering is planned, make the decision to set aside differences in advance. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, and understand they may be feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression, too.
Naturally, planning ahead and sticking to budget will go a long way, too. Realize you can’t buy happiness by over spending on gifts. Also, asking for help in advance for tasks like prep and cleanup will alleviate stress. Don’t be a super hero and ask guests to bring a dish so you can enjoy the gathering as well. If you tend to isolate this may be the perfect time to accept an invitation or attend a community event. Pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone even for a short time can boost our mood. Volunteering or doing something to help others is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden friendships. A quick online search will help you find the options that best fit your abilities.
Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence adds to your stress and guilt. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, eat healthy meals, go for walks, avoid excessive alcohol use and even limit the time you spend watching the news and scrolling through social media. Taking a break by yourself without distractions for just 15 minutes may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do.
Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.

Take care of you ,, Mama!
