March is always an interesting month for those of us that call the Bay home. It seems we all hold our breath from December to March with the hope that we make it through the shopping, planning and all the energy supplemements one can take to get through the back-to-back holiday and carnival seasons. As a mom, I wondered if my children would ever go back to school, and as a business owner, I wondered if we’d ever get back to business. It’s quite the whirlwind. But now that March is here, we can all exhale. Knowing the amount of work that goes into being a Mardi Gras royal, we caught up with MCA Queen, Cooper Leland, and MAMGA Queen, Richlyn Pugh, for a regalia review. With each look better than the next, I’m amazed at how positively posh the carnival fashion scene has become. Bravo ladies! Keeping up the fab-factor, one chic Mobilian is preparing to launch a new private club to rival those found in big cities—think Soho House—and we couldn’t be more excited to showcase his progress. And we’ve got a few newlyweds in this issue as we know everyone loves a Southern wedding, too. We also caught up the top chef at Sean’s Prime Dining in Fairhope and a slew of our favorite aesthetic and health care providers. Okay, it’s time to exhale again. As we glide into spring, or possibly summer, enjoy the read and breathe.

ROYAL REGALIA REVIEW

Much like any notable award show, Mardi Gras is also known for the fashion. And from the coronations to the endless parties, our 2023 carnival queen’s and their royal subjects did not disappoint.

MCA Queen, Cooper Leland, and MAMGA Queen, Richlyn Pugh, curated flawless head-to-toe ensembles that left us swooning. Rivaling other world renowned courts with their fascinators, crowns, gowns and all the grand details, they left no style-stone unturned. No easy task, our queens went to great lengths to ensure they represented our city with grace, elegance and sophistication with absolute success. While they say it’s good to be king, we think it’s even better to be queen.

THE MAKING MILESTONE of a

Just one year ago, the adored Dusty Franklin Smith, MD, FACS, and Mary Dunlap Wells, MD, FACOG, listened to their gut instincts and took a leap of faith that has resulted in a booming aesthetics practice in downtown Fairhope. With new treatments, sharpened skills and an all-star team, these two busy women tell us all about becoming the masters of their universe as they confront middle age face first.

Even top doctors need a checkup from time to time. And hitting the one-year mark since opening Fairhope’s MD Aesthetics of Mobile Bay, founders Dusty Franklin Smith, MD, FACS, and Mary Dunlap Wells, MD, FACOG, invited us to check in on their mid-life adventure. Hard to believe these two established medical professionals even entertained the idea of adding more to their already full plates, they’ve surpassed their own expectations proving that women entering middle age are just hitting their stride.

In hindsight, their recipe for success included all the right ingredients: a true passion for helping others age gracefully, on-going master-level aesthetic skills, a close connection to the community, a divine spa-style facility, and an A-list team. A competitive arena, this recipe is golden as we’re all learning to value the necessary and unique skillset it requires to turn back time. And, no, not all injections are created equal.

As for their whys? Dr. Smith, an esteemed surgeon for over 15 years, was looking for her next challenge. “I’ve always wanted to start a business from the ground up. Not knowing how it would fit into my career plans, aesthetics became the perfect fit as I’ve aged and started focusing on taking care of myself. I’ve always loved learning new techniques and the ever-evolving aesthetic world allows me to do just that!” she beams.

Dr. Wells, still very active in her role at Fairhope Gynecology and Obstetrics, was driven to answer the aesthetic calling when she turned 50 last year. Dr. Wells shares, “I’ve always seen healthcare as a continuum since our patients have varying needs as they age. Plus, we get one chance at life, and aging is a natural part of it. So, while we’re grateful to get older, we want to do so gracefully and help others to do the same. This not only makes me a better physician, but it also makes me more relatable to my patients,” she tells us.

With the aesthetics practice in full swing, they both share, “This first year has been amazing! It can sometimes be a little hectic juggling a very busy surgical practice, and obstetrical/gynecological practice, but we absolutely love it! This has allowed us to serve our patients in a whole new way. It not only enhances what we can provide, but also fills the creative outlet we both needed. We are so thankful for our loyal customers, friends, and families who have supported us along the way. There have been growing pains, but we have used those to continue to excel. We truly love providing services that make people feel and look beautiful.”

And why take our word for it? The reviews speak for themselves. Examples such as, “Amazing experience with even better results with this practice. “From the front desk to the esthetician, Jodi, and even Dr. Wells, I received concierge treatment. With a busy schedule, it’s hard to make time for myself, they understand this and get you in and out quickly. Kind professionals doing a great job! Thank you!” and, “Grateful and thankful to have found these talented and intelligent women! From my first interaction with Ciara at the front desk, to facials with Jodi and Avery, and Botox with Dr. Dusty—I always feel I am in the best hands. Thankful to have this level of professionalism and knowledge in our area,” speak volumes.

As for the treatments offered: “Our favorite treatments include using filler for cheek and lip augmentation. When done in a subtle fashion, this treatment can truly give the patient a natural enhancement to redefine the loss of definition that occurs with aging. Our goal is not to make someone look drastically different, but to help patients look like

they did in their younger years. We strive to assist our patients to see a more youthful appearance and feel confident in the aging process,” the doctors share in tandem.

Adding to their ever-growing skillset and menu of service options, they share, “Recent additions include the Morpheus 8 which provides multi-modal treatment options using radio-frequency microneedling. Considered a revolutionary method of skin tightening, it reinforces the underlying skin structure. Using what can best be described as a heated wand that is rubbed along the face to lift, tighten, and contour skin while promoting collagen production, Forma facials are also a big hit with both men and women. And when it comes to unwanted hair removal, Diolaze laser treatments are the most modern and known for being gentle, safe, and effective. The fastest in terms of producing results, The Lumecca IPL vascular treatments for pigmentation issues, thread veins, sun damage, and even vascular lesions can’t be beat. This is the most aggressive, non-surgical anti-aging treatment available. We

have also added the Evolve, which works to tighten skin, build muscle, and burn adipose cells. We keep up-to-date with the newest cutting-edge technologies and training opportunities to provide the best aesthetic treatment plans.”

As all women know, it certainly takes a village. Especially when you consider both doctors are also mothers and wives. “We absolutely have the best team supporting both of us and the practice! When you walk in our front doors, you are greeted by our office manager, Tracy Ong, and Ciara Saunders who create the most welcoming and relaxing environment. We know it can be intimidating just to make an aesthetic appointment and she is extremely knowledgeable and makes sure everyone has a flawless appointment! Our four aestheticians: Jody Harris, Avery Friedman, Charleigh McMahon, and Chasen Lipscomb Minnifield are not only brilliant and talented, but they can provide multiple treatment options from laser hair removal to our signature facials. We believe in a team approach and strive to not only give top notch aesthetic treatments, but to create a wonderful work-family environment.”

So, this magical duo, who look better than ever by the way, have not only succeeded in reaching one year in business, but they’ve also built a beautiful practice where the staff and clients are not just satisfied, they’re thrilled to be there. No easy feat, a spectacular celebration is in the works. Set for April 6th, they are rolling out the discounts and special packages to show their client appreciation. Be sure to follow on social media and join the celebration as we toast to the success of the brave women.

Knowing high praises are certainly helpful for a small city business, but perhaps their humble natures are a factor in their success, too. “Our biggest compliment is having new clients book service appointments after seeing the results of our existing patients. We treat all ages and genders providing individualized treatment plans leading to exceptional results. It is so rewarding to help guide individuals to reach their skin care goals,” they conclude. Without a doubt that we’ll be celebrating their success well into the future, cheers to the doctors and team that help us all put our best face forward.

ANDREW & PARKER

August 20, 2022

20

Hailing from Mobile, Mr. Michael Warren and Mrs. Kathrine Butler’s daughter, Parker, married Andrew, the son of Mr. Ronald Louis and Mrs. Cary Gavlin from Ellicott City, Maryland. Having met during freshman year at Washington & Lee University (W&L), Parker and Andrew didn’t necessarily socialize in the same friend group. “I considered him part of the ‘Yankee crowd!’” Parker jokes. However, given the small student body, they were familiar with one another. “We became closer friends our sophomore year, and I ended up making the first move by asking him to my sorority formal. We started officially dating soon after!” Parker shares.

Upon graduation, Andrew moved to Washington, D.C., for a job and Parker headed to Charleston, South Carolina, for an internship with Garden & Gun Magazine. Dating long distance and with their romance in full-bloom, Andrew more than surprised Parker with his touching proposal. “In September 2021, he came for a routine visit. We had dinner plans and he suggested a walk down a few of my favorite streets in the French Quarter beforehand. I started getting suspicious because high heels and cobblestone streets do not go together! Turning down Philadelphia Alley, Andrew had a string duo playing my favorite songs. It was just the two of us in the most perfect moment. I felt this overwhelming sense of peace when he got down on one knee.”

ANDREW & PARKER

Thoughtfully, Andrew had also secretly flown in their friends to celebrate the engagement, too. An easy yes for Parker, she recalls overhearing a conversation between her brother, Danner, and her father. “Danner and I are extremely close and while I always felt Andrew was a keeper, those feelings were confirmed when I overheard my dad and Danner having a conversation about Andrew. When my dad asked Danner for the ‘scoop’ on Andrew, Danner told him that I couldn’t have found a better guy; that’s all it took for my dad – and me!”

Choosing a destination wedding, Parker tells us, “My maternal grandmother, Anne Williams Koelmeyer, owns a beautiful summer home not far from Camden, in Spruce Head, Maine. My family has been fortunate to visit at least once a year since I was born. My childhood memories are filled with picking blueberries, helping my grandmother tend to her garden, climbing the waterfront rocks with my brother and eating lobster—lots and lots of lobster! Andrew has made several trips and we have both come to cherish our time there. This was a pretty easy decision for us!”

As for the overall theme, Parker shares, “We focused on letting the Maine setting do the talking. We were excited to share Camden with our family and friends—many of whom had never been to Maine. And given that our wedding was in August, it was a welcomed reprieve from the Alabama humidity! The décor was simple with lots of big white blooms and green accents. The Camden Harbor stole the show and made a spectacular backdrop for one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen.”

As for her wedding attire? “My veil, which was accented with lace from my mother’s wedding gown, was purchased from Over the Moon Bridal in Mobile. I found my gown at The Bridal House of Charleston as we were about to leave when my mom pointed out a dress in the front window. I tried it on and it was a done deal!” Parker exclaims.

Naturally, it wouldn’t have been a proper Mobile party without the Cooper Trent Band. “We are so grateful to Cooper and his bandmates for flying to Maine to take part in our special day. Cooper even learned the songs “When You Say Nothing at All” by Alison Krauss for our first dance, and “Wide Open Spaces” by The Chicks for the father-daughter dance. Both songs have such sentimental meaning, so it really meant a lot that he took the time to learn those for us,” Parker shares.

Much like the Bay area, Maine is known for its fresh seafood, too. “We

had several food stations so our guests could get the full taste of Maine. The lobster rolls, raw oysters and gumbo were big a hit,” she shares. Knowing it takes a village, Parker’s mother was instrumental. “She played so many roles throughout the process – planner, designer, counselor, and best friend. She has the best taste so I trusted her with everything – and she pulled off the wedding of my dreams.”

In addition to arriving by lobster boat with their wedding party, Parker fondly recalls many special moments. “Almost 10 years ago to the date of my wedding, my dad was in a terrible car accident, and we nearly lost him. By the grace of God, he made a full recovery and I have been thankful for every day with him since – but my wedding day was especially significant knowing my dad was by my side. Right before the church doors opened, I looked at him and told him how glad I was that he’s still here to walk me down the aisle; how glad I was that he fought so hard to stay here, and how honored I am to be his daughter. I consider it such a blessing that we were able to share that moment together.”

Also, my ‘Something Borrowed’ earrings and bracelet were from my mom’s close friend, Lee Adams, and my ‘Something Old’ was my dad’s christening bonnet, which my mom wore at their wedding, and for my ‘Something Blue’, we wrapped my Camp Illahee tie around my bouquet.”

As for the wedded bliss? Andrew shares, “Parker brings a positive attitude, a great sense of humor, and a deep sense of empathy to every situation she encounters. She’s an incredibly loyal and supportive friend and life partner. Helping others become the best versions of themselves, her vibrancy is infectious and brightens up even my worst days!” Chiming in, Parker shares, “Andrew is the most thoughtful person I know. He asks the best questions and is an incredible listener. Great at loving the people around him, he also makes time to call friends he hasn’t seen to see how they’re doing. Putting his relationship with God first, I’m very thankful for his guidance and encouragement as he continues to lead us in our faith.”

For 14 glorious days, the newlyweds toured Greece and Italy on their honeymoon. “Starting in Santorini, we made our way to the island of Paros and flew from Mykonos to Florence, and then to wine country in Tuscany. Andrew planned everything and did such a fantastic job!” Parker shares. As for now, Andrew and Parker reside in Arlington, VA, with their yellow Labrador, Lanier. Andrew works as an investor for Sands Capital and Parker works in public relations with Allison+Partners. Concluding, Parker shares, “We’re not sure what the future holds, but we are so excited to start our lives together as husband and wife!”

CANDEN & MARK

October 23, 2022

28

When asked about their history as a couple, Canden sums it up best by sharing, “We always knew if the stars aligned for us, it would stick forever.” Well, the stars did align for them at last, and on a beautiful October day, Mark Andrew Kovaly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kovaly of Pittsburgh, wed Canden Bliss Jackson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Jackson of Silverhill.

Having seen each other through many phases of life, Mark and Canden joke they were on the “slow play” when it came to their relationship. After meeting through mutual friend, and Mark’s Ocean Street band member, Andy Kropf, their lives went in different directions. Mark was touring and Canden was dedicated to finishing college

and staring her career. They remained dear friends for years, supporting each other from afar. “Canden’s unconditional love for me and my untraditional life allowed me to follow my dreams. She was a true friend, my rock, my biggest fan, and sometimes my most honest critic,” Mark shares. Years later they were thrown a lifeline when Canden moved from Los Angeles to accept a job in Atlanta. Mark had been living between Nashville and Atlanta and they both knew this was their chance.

“We rescued our dog, Timmy, who quickly became the center of our universe, eventually we bought a house together and started preparing for our forever!”

When preparing for the engagement, the story gets even more special. “My Memama always had the most beautiful jewelry. She’s where

we all get our sparkle. Her health had been declining and when she heard Mark was preparing to propose, she asked if he wanted to use the threestone engagement ring given to her by my grandfather 60 years ago,” Canden shares. Knowing Canden’s name comes from her grandparents’ initials, Mark knew it would be incredibly sentimental to use such a meaningful heirloom. “Mark replaced one of the stones so now, when I look at them, I see the past love of my grandparents, the present blending of our hearts and families, and our future together.” Canden beams.

While a European wedding had long been her dream, Canden realized they could celebrate with more friends and family locally. “Our family property is a former nursery and boasts a variety of beautiful trees and flowers. My parents’ home resembles a European villa or chateau, and we knew we could achieve the same vision by giving a classic Southern wedding a French twist, there at my childhood home. My parents exhausted themselves getting everything ready, but it made us all so proud. It couldn’t have come together without my mom, dad, and a very special group of loved ones,” Canden shares.

The ceremony was held on the front steps with a vintage-inspired floral arch of Moab and cabbage roses. Olive branches and greenery spilled down and around the French doors. Mark’s tuxes were custom, European made, and the vintage lace design of Canden’s ceremony dress all came to-

gether to tie in the theme. Bridesmaids wore velvet gowns in a Prosecco hue representing the sparkling Italian wine it’s named after and further enhancing the neutral color scheme. With the bridal party in place, a vintage Rolls Royce pulled around the garden stopping at the top of the aisle. Angelic flower girls made their procession, before the car pulled away to reveal Canden and her dad. “It was like a movie scene where everything was in slow motion. She was silhouetted by the sun setting and it truly took my breath away,” Mark exclaims.

Each tablescape included French antiques passed down from Canden’s grandmother. “Mandina’s catered and Troy, the executive chef, was absolutely wonderful. For a hint of Italy, we served Aperol Spritz, Castelvetrano olives, and caprese skewers during cocktail hour. We served mini muffulettas and Southern inspired fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade, too. For dinner, we enjoyed Mandina’s famous fish almandine, followed by bread pudding and a Community Coffee bar,” Canden shares.

Post-cocktail hour, the couple changed into slick ensembles for the tented reception. Weaving their love of music into the day, Canden admits, “One perk of marrying a musician? Talented friends! Mark’s musically gifted group of friends came out of the woodwork to make sure every aspect of the sound and music that day was spectacular.” Zander Wyatt, an original Ocean Street band member currently touring with country artist Larry Fleet, made the trip to play. Jazz band, Wabi Sabi, led cocktail hour, featuring Mark’s long-time dueling piano partner, Damian Cartier, and Vinnie D’agostino, who plays sax in Mark’s Billy Joel Tribute show. Andy Kropf of Ocean Street and the Ty Reynolds Band led the party at the reception. The groom himself also got on stage during the reception for a few songs.

Recalling a few meaningful moments, Canden shares, “For our first dance, Andy performed an original song he and Mark wrote called, “Back to Me”. At one point we were pressed up against the stage like fans both singing along. Mark and the band also took time to learn the song my dad requested for our dance: “My Special Angel” by the Vogues. My fondest memories with him are listening to oldies, and it was surreal to have my new husband singing to us in that moment.” Clearly a musical family, Mark’s sister also sang as he and his mom shared their dance. “We

chose our siblings as best man and matron of honor, and they each gave a meaningful, heartfelt speech. Everyone went out of their way to make sure we felt loved, and we really felt on top of the world.”

When asked what they most adore about each other, Canden shares, “Mark is my lighthouse. I trust him with every fiber of my being, and I’m inspired by his undying positivity. More than anything, he just shows up for me and my family, embraces their unique personalities, and loves them unconditionally.” Mark adds, “Part of my true love for Canden came from watching the way my family fell in love with her, and the way she embraced them. I’ve always been close to my parents and sister, and I love that they adore her, too.”

Keeping with their theme, the couple honeymooned in the South of France, Monaco, and Italy. “We started at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, outside of Nice, and proceeded to Èze, a hilltop city overlooking the Côte d’Azur. From there, we spent time in Monaco and Northern Italy. We had photos taken around Casino Monte Carlo in our wedding attire. Canden added, “We got to live out our European wedding fantasy and felt like we were channeling our inner James Bond and Grace Kelly”.

Today, Mark and Canden live outside of Atlanta. Mark is a full-time musician and Canden works with BMW of North America as a Senior Product Trainer. So, what does the future hold now? “We’re living for each moment and are thrilled with our home, jobs, and life in general. We’re excited to tackle life as a married couple, revel in the joy of the last few months, and obsess over our wedding pictures a little longer before we decide on our next adventure!”

ANNE RILEY & THOMAS

The wedding ceremony took place at Fairhope’s Trinity Presbyterian Church, the bride’s childhood place of worship. Raised in Fairhope, she shares, “It’s a precious church that sits on the bluff overlooking our beautiful Bay. When you walk through the front doors you can see the Mobile skyline where Thomas was born and raised. So, this church connected the two places we love the most,” she shares.

Known for its pristine scenery and lake views, the couple’s reception took place at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley. “We fell in love with Steelwood because of its beautiful landscapes, delicious food, amazing staff, and of course, for being able to surprise our guests with a firework send-off show!” Anne Riley explains.

The daughter of John B. Green and Christian H. Flynn and the son of Mr. Dudley O. Davis and Mrs. Lisa L. Davis, the couple fondly recalls how they met, sharing, “We met through friends, and had our first date at Moe’s BBQ in downtown Mobile during Mardi Gras. We shared a platter of dry rub wings, and the rest is history!”

As for knowing Thomas was the one, Anne Riley adds, “I knew he was the man I was supposed to marry early into our relationship. We are compatible on many levels and I just knew I could never let him go!”

With total adoration for one another, Thomas shares, “I adore how she makes each day special no matter what, as well as her work ethic, drive for life, and caring heart.” Chiming in, Anne Riley adds, “To know him is to love him! I adore his compassionate nature and consideration

for me and others. He has the most beautiful soul that seeks out the best in others and his spirit is infectious!”

As for the proposal? “It was so creative and thoughtful! His inspiration was sparked by my passion for art and a memory of buying our first painting by local artist, Bill Harrison, at The Garage in Point Clear. The painting is an incredible rendering of Dauphin Street that highlights the iconic Three Georges Fine Southern Chocolates complete with the sidewalk’s daily special sandwich board. Thomas said he was taking me to a ‘surprise brunch,’ and while walking down Dauphin Street, I stopped in my tracks when we arrived at Three Georges and that sandwich board read, ‘Anne Riley, Will You Marry Me?’ Down one knee, he recreated the scene from the painting in real life!” She swoons.

The couple started planning from there. “My gown was my top priority! I found the dress of my dreams at The White Room in Birmingham with my mother. Named “Spellbound”, a gown from Anne Barge’s couture collection, it featured 3D embroidery and handbeaded lace. Every inch of its delicate features and incredible detail enchanted me. My bridesmaids wore a timeless champagne hued gown by Amsale from Mobile’s Bella Bridesmaids. Thomas wore a tailored Italian black tuxedo paired with Roberto Cavalli loafers and sterling silver cufflinks. His groomsmen looked so distinguished in their coordinating classic black tuxedos and bow ties!” Anne Riley tells us.

With no detail overlooked, the couple had a five-piece band, Bad Brad & The Sipsey Slims, from Muscle Shoals. “They rocked the house and had guests of all ages on the dance floor with an

assortment of soul, funk, and blues. From passed Hors D’oeuvres like lump Blue Crab cakes and spring rolls with a Thai chili sauce to the main course offerings like the pepper crusted beef tenderloin, and a mashed potato bar. The talented chefs at Steelwood went above and beyond our expectations,” Anne Riley recalls.

On a deeper note, Anne Riley shares her favorite moment. “Saying our vows was the most memorable and special moment! My emotions were so powerful and I will forever cherish that feeling.” For Thomas? “During our first dance to ‘Bring It on Home to Me” by Sam Cooke, my nerves were racing and I was full of excitement. It will always be a very special moment for me.”

Mackensie Turner, Virginia Bender, Katherine Lewellen, and Victoria Watts served as Anne Riley’s beautiful bridesmaids. “They are truly a blessing, and I do not know where I’d be without such remarkable friends,”

Anne Riley beams. “While extremely grateful for our parents, I have to acknowledge Andie Bender and Sharon Mosley, my two best friends’ mothers, who spent the entire day helping me get down the aisle!”

The couple honeymooned in Jamaica and today they reside in Spanish Fort with their three dogs—Bo, Sophie, and Sage. Anne Riley shares, “I work at Harvest Jewels in Fairhope while starting Anne Riley Fine Art to continue my passion and create commissioned work for people near and far! Thomas has worked for his family’s business at Port City Foreign Car Service in Mobile for over 8 years. His plans are to maintain that success for generations to come. More importantly, the couple hopes to build a beautiful life for their future children. Anne Riley feels that, “each day never fails to be a new adventure and I am soaking up every moment!”

ALLYSSA & LANDON
44

As one of four girls, and the third to get married, Allyssa has seen the grand and knew she wanted an intimate wedding where she and Landon could soak up the joy with no fuss. “We knew our wedding would be a deeply personal experience and we were drawn to Fairhope because that’s where we realized we loved each other. After driving down the scenic highway, Little Point Clear stood out to us immediately, and we knew it was the perfect place for us. And, Tricia and her team were lovely from the beginning!” Allyssa beams.

As for how this sweet bride, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Lipham, and her Virginia based groom, Landon Park, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Park met? “I tried a new Christian dating app called

United Young. I went on with no romantic expectations and realized I looked at only one profile twice, and it was Landon’s. Letting my shyness get the best of me, I was preparing to delete the app when I got the notification that changed my life— ‘Landon likes your profile’,” Allyssa shares.

Over the next several months, they spent every weekend getting to know each other. “We truly got the measure of each other after speaking about our beliefs, how we had been raised, our love of history, and many more deep conversations I never thought I would have. I fell in love with my best friend, even as the world shut down. By July 2020, we knew this was special and formally began dating,” Allyssa adds.

Curious, her family asked how she would describe Landon. “One

ALLYSSA & LANDON

word always came to mind: steady. He has been such an anchor: anchored in his beliefs, who he is, and his approach to all things–big or small, easy or challenging. I’ve always felt incredibly safe with him, and I knew his love would be steadfast,” Allyssa confides. As for Landon? “When I told my friends and family about Allyssa, I said she was a breath of fresh air from the day I met her. I adored her funny, bubbly personality. We always seemed to be laughing wherever we went!”

Not having seriously dated before, Allyssa jokes with Landon that he’s her first and only second date. “We were so in sync from the beginning. Since we lived in two states, Landon in Florida, and me in Alabama, we had to be intentional and creative. On the brink of the pandemic when he couldn’t drive to Mobile, I felt pursued. I received a good morning and good night text from him every day until we were married and he could tell me in person. From FaceTime movie marathons and Zoom calls, he never missed an opportunity to spend time with me,” Allyssa shares.

With a visit planned to see his family in Virginia, Landon was ready to propose. “Circumstances required us to take separate flights, and I knew her flight would arrive after mine. It was approaching midnight as we exited the airport, and after much waiting, I couldn’t wait any longer. I knelt on one knee and asked her to marry me. The timing ended up holding even more significance since it was my grandparents’ wedding anniversary,” Landon explains.

After a wide search for the perfect gown, Allyssa’s bridal consultant suggested a beaded Stella York gown at a shop in Gulfport. “I would have never picked that dress, but the moment I put

it on, I knew. My mom and I looked at each other with tears in our eyes, and that was the first moment I felt like a bride. Adding our beloved family veil, the look was complete as I joyfully said ‘yes’ to the dress while Going to the Chapel began playing from the speakers,” she beams.

When it came to their big day, Allyssa choose a classic meets coastal theme with shades of white, sage, dusty blue, and sand. “I wanted everything to have as much intention as possible. My something borrowed was our family veil my sisters wore at their weddings, and even the coffee was from Soul Caffeine, where we had our first date.”

Wanting everything to be down-to-earth and fun, the couple chose to enlist their favorite food trucks. “Fairhope’s Tin-tin’s Rock and Roll Food Truck, known for dishes like pork tenderloin teriyaki over signature pancit noodles and crab cakes, as well as Mobile’s Mo’Bay Beignet Co.’s truck offering their famous original hot and fresh beignets, were one of my favorite things about our wedding. The food was fantastic, and they added a wow factor for our guests,” Allyssa recalls.

On an emotional level, Allyssa admits, “I was afraid of crying my way through the ceremony! So we decided to exchange traditional vows during the ceremony and to share our private vows separately. Landon’s vow letter will always be one of my most precious belongings.” Not to be outdone, Landon adds, “I’m not much of a crier, but seeing her walk down the aisle made me tear up. It was also the realization that we were vowing to spend the rest of our lives together before God and in the presence of our closest friends and family. Our entire day was simply perfect.”

From the early days of their relationship, Allyssa and Landon shared a desire to see the world. “During our honeymoon, we visited three countries and six stunning cities in just seven days. We sailed from Barcelona to Cannes, then on to Sorrento, Florence, and Rome before ending our trip on the island of Mallorca, Spain. Perhaps the most surprising hidden gem was the beautiful hilltop town of Valldemossa. Breathtaking views greeted us on our drive as we passed olive and citrus groves along the way to the top of a hidden village with cobblestone streets, artisanal wares, and warm locals. It’s an experience we will always cherish,” she shares.

As for their future? Allyssa concludes, “In September, we decided to relocate to Landon’s hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, where I work remotely as a Multimedia Specialist, and Landon works with UPS and as a contractor for Abeka as a History Editor. We purchased our first home and are thrilled to make it our own while we settle into life in the mountains!”

Meet Chef Sean Travis. His restaurant, Sean’s Prime Dining, is the talk of the town. He’s carefully curated the right ambiance that makes the social scene just as good as the masterful creations he’s whipping up in the kitchen. Raising standards and demanding the very best prime meats, local seafood and produce, scratch-made sauces and pasta, and, of course, the wine list and cocktails, he’s working hard to fulfill and maintain the top-chef spot in Fairhope—and he’s loving every minute of it.

he Bay’s food scene isn’t only booming, the industry insiders are serving up eateries to rival those found in bigger cities and all the innovative culinary delights they offer. With constant content streaming and cookbooks selling like never before, food has become a national obsession. From the unique ingredients to artistically designed presentations, we can’t get enough. And, we’ve learned it’s about so much more than the food, it’s also about the overall dining experience.

Today’s guests want that just right ambiance that strikes the perfect balance between casual and formal. Upscale glassware for handcrafted cocktails, linen napkins and polished plates, and more, are expected as is a comfortable yet contemporary vibe. For many women, it’s about having a place they can wear that new dress and mingle with friends at the next table. And men want a place they are proud to bring a date or their wife and also say hello to friends.

The founder of downtown Fairhope’s Sean’s Prime Dining, Chef Sean Travis, is a shining star and he’s getting it all just right. He’s serving everything from the carefully curated dishes adorned with a fresh orchid to the lively bar and social scene that boasts incredible cocktails like the Smokey Old Fashioned and The Tiffany—champagne based and a nod to one of our favorite luxury retailers. And yes, the glassware is both perfection and manicure worthy. The tables are linen and candle topped, and the comfortable social lounge draws a who’s who crowd. As self-professed lighting snobs, we salute the low lighting, as what woman likes bright lights when tearing up a filet?

And then there’s the food. Originally from Delaware, Sean was formerly trained at the acclaimed Johnson & Wales University Culinary School. To say he’s committed to using the absolute best is an understatement. “Every single element of each dish is made from scratch. From the pasta to the desserts and sauces, we do not cut corners. I also insist on using prime meats and I do all my own butchering. It’s important to know that the word ‘prime’ is used to describe the highest quality beef and other meats like veal and lamb. There is no better grade. Our seafood and produce are sourced locally as often as possible. I literally get tuna and U10 scallops, which are the best and biggest, right off the boat. When it comes to the actual dishes, I insist we maintain the integrity as well. For instance, if we serve clam chowder, we make it with real clams from Virginia and our crab cakes are packed with lump blue crap, no fillers like bread and by products,” he confides.

Changing the menu seasonally to maximize the various meats and seafood available and the local produce that ranges from microgreens to purple asparagus and Japanese eggplant, Sean’s favorite flavor influencers can best be described as Caribbean creole with an Asian flare. The appetizers like the Ahi tuna wontons with wasabi lime crema and sweet soy glaze and his fresh North Atlantic lobster rolls poached in house butter are fan favorites. For the entrées, Sean’s center cut certified Angus prime beef filet with a wild mushroom Bordelaise sauce topped with gorgonzola compound butter or served Oscar style with jumbo lump crab and asparagus with homemade béarnaise sauce are quite the crowd pleasers as well. Tasty sides like the truffle fries tossed in Romano cheese, parsley and truffle oil do not disappoint and make the perfect starter or side-kick to the out-of-this-world Wagyu beef burger.

Naturally, there’s brunch too. Sip mimosas over Sean’s Prime Benedict made with blue crab and lobster and creamy soaked gouda grits. Sean also takes exceptional pride in his wine selection and offers the highest quality, specialty varieties you won’t find elsewhere. “From the renowned Hill Family and Ashton Estate wines to real champagne from Champagne, France, bartender Rohan Moodie will ensure you get the right grape. I have an incredible team and If you’re seeking quality food, come dine with us as we’re about fostering relationships. We also host private events from Mardi Gras parties to rehearsal dinners, too,” he tells us.

Having worked in Key West for many years, Sean spent time as a top chef at various resorts and upscale restaurants. He’s cooked with Emeril Lagasse and received countless awards that include two Master Chef titles. After vacationing in Gulf

Shores, Sean and Lilian, his wife of 17 years, found Fairhope and decided to call it home ten years ago. They have three children; Emmaline, 12, Abigail, 14, and, Hayden Travis, 17, who Sean describes as the best food runner and host around. “Our children go to school at Bayside Academy and our home is close to the 50-yard line of the football field, so we do a lot of entertaining during the season. I absolutely love entertaining!” Sean shares.

As the family settled down in Fairhope, Sean enjoyed catering various events and working as a private chef for several families. However, he noticed something missing and decided to create it. “From my travels to restaurants in bigger cities to the high-end experience my private clients enjoyed in the comfort of their home, I realized Fairhope was missing a place that offered upscale food with a fun social atmosphere. From good music to even better food and cocktails, we’ve accomplished that. I’m really proud of the what we’ve built. Guests thank me for being here and I feel so blessed, the support has been very humbling,” he tells us.

MODERN

LOVE

AT THE DRISKELL

We’re all familiar with the large historical homes lining Government Street in downtown Mobile. On most of our beaten paths, we’re able to witness the transformative renovations in real time when a brave buyer steps in to bring them back to their former glory. Interestingly, many younger individuals and couples are scooping up these properties. Armed with Pinterest boards and an appreciation for yesteryear’s craftmanship, their experiences are full of twists and turns, tears and laughter, and more. Some might even deem them crazy for tackling such a massive project, but we think they’re fearless and fabulous. Here, Murphy D. Bishop II, shares one such journey. As the saying goes, “no guts, no glory.”

THE DRISKELL OWNER, MURPHY D. BISHOP II
60

For many home enthusiasts, the obsession starts young. No exception, Murphy recalls, “As a small child, my parents and I would float down Government Street, A.K.A. ‘Millionaires Row,’ back in the day, in our larger-than-life Caprice Classic. Inspired by hit shows “Dallas”, “Dynasty” and “Falcon Crest,” I would look at the stately homes and dream of what they looked like inside, and if a movie star or oilman owned them. My child’s mind created a fantasy of what the world behind those doors was like, and I loved it. And, 1410 Government Street held a deep allure. It was hidden behind giant azaleas and guarded by a locked gate that sat firmly on the large grounds. I would peer around the azaleas and look at the stately columns and dream of Crystal Carrington emerging from the front door.”

All grown-up, Murphy was presented with an opportunity he couldn’t have fathomed as a child. “When the home came on the market, my realtor and I quickly toured the home. My offer was accepted, and within 2 hours the home I once dreamed of was now mine! Neither a movie star or oilman, I would now know what was truly behind those gates,” he beams.

A self-professed serial entrepreneur, now with 13 local rental properties, Murphy tells us, “I am the cofounder and CEO of The Better Skin Co., a global skincare brand known for multipurpose skincare. And, I am always looking for my next venture. Prior to moving back to Mobile, I had remodeled a few homes in Seattle and was obsessed with the transformation that could happen. I’ve always loved Mobile’s architecture and history, so I decided that restoration and renovation would be my next venture when I returned. As I began purchasing and renovating historic properties for both short- and long-term renting, I was hooked!”

62
DURING RENOVATION
“THINK OF A VACATION AT THE FOUR SEASONS BALI EXCEPT YOU’RE IN MIDTOWN MOBILE.”

A trendsetter in his own right, Murphy was born and raised in Grand Bay and then spent 30 years as a leader in the beauty industry in Los Angeles, and with stints in Chicago, Seattle, D.C., Nashville, and Atlanta. On his return to Mobile in 2019, he shares, “I saw a city experiencing a great transformation. While I was away, Mobile began an evolution that is still in progress. The city has become Alabama’s most progressive city, bursting at the seams with growth in the business, housing, and innovation sectors. Top tier food, craft cocktails, and specialty coffee houses are pouring into the city, which is evidence that we are growing and going places. I want to be part of this evolution before I miss out!”

Chances are that most are familiar with Murphy’s latest real estate renovation project that is already available for short-term bookings. With big plans to transform the estate into a future private social club we’ll all want to join; Murphy’s vision is nothing short of exciting.

To set the vibe and visual tone of his latest premiere property, The Driskell, Murphy shares, “Think of relaxing in a Slim Aarons print in a southern mansion.” Wildly applauding this reference and effort, it’s important for any chic-life-seeker to know about Slim Aarons. An iconic American photographer, Slim’s photography epitomized the glamour, charisma, and celebrity of the late 1950’s. Regarding what he sought to capture in his portraits, Slim said, “Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” Known for chronicling the leisure pursuits of the rich and famous in stunning environments, letting the natural beauty of his subjects become his focal point alongside all the chic design elements of that time period, Slim won the trust of those he photographed. In turn, he was allowed to shoot some of the most intimate and candid portraiture of the 20th century. We recommend a Google search if you’re not familiar.

Catching us up to where it is today, Murphy tells us, “The Driskell is deep into the restoration. About 75% of the interior has been restored and the grounds are in progress. The Betty at The Driskell, Government Street’s largest saltwater pool, is flowing and will soon be ready for visitors. The Driskell is modeled after the exclusive Shoreditch House London, a SOHO House property that is a private social club consisting of a restaurant, bar, pool, and plenty of space to commune with friends, family and colleagues.”

With similar plans, Murphy adds, “The Driskell will eventually also be membership based and members will have an all-access pass to the property and the first option for private events on the grounds. The Driskell will cater to the creative class of Mobile

64

that seek something modern and luxurious. A 21 and over private club, membership will be limited to provide optimum service to each guest. It will offer a relaxed vibe that allows guests to come in for a bite or cocktail, sit and socialize, or take a dip at their own mid-town retreat.”

As for now? “Currently the property is hosting guests in our luxury rentals. We have 3 suites to accommodate 8 to 12 guests, each with an opulent theme. The Royal Suite is 1200 square feet of indulgence! It boasts two king beds, a living room, and exclusive use of the large front balcony. One room overlooks the giant oaks on Government Street and the other overlooks The Betty, our saltwater pool. The Safari Suite is modeled after the five-star resorts in Tanzania, complete with king bed and a clawfoot tub for relaxing. The Palm Beach Suite was inspired by the luxurious art deco movement found in Palm Beach, and boasts a queen bed and our largest clawfoot tub. All suites have a Nespresso coffee bar, snacks, refrigerator, microwave, and other essentials. We can even host select private events. The entire property has an artsy, Instagram-worthy vibe!” he shares.

With an eye for design and a keen ability to blend the old and new, The Driskell is cleverly adorned with a curation of found objects— many from Murphy’s travels around the world. “Modern furniture from Haute House Couture, Jonathan Adler, Michael Aram, and Jardins en Fleur as well as antiques from Mobile and New Orleans fill the home,” he explains.

Sitting on 1.1 acres, the property has ample parking and is convenient to all things downtown and midtown making it a stellar rental option during Mardi Gras. “Of course, the holiday season at The Driskell is always magical and summers by the pool are a staycation dream!” Murphy adds. With plans to build a restaurant and bar, a bespoke fitness

center, and so much more, Murphy concludes with, “The Driskell will be about exclusivity without sacrificing inclusivity. Beauty will abound in all aspects of the experience from the person greeting you to the glass you sip from. Think of a vacation at the Four Seasons Bali except you’re in midtown Mobile.”

Since Clare often refers patients to him for everything from Adult ADHD to anxiety, this pairing will offer patients a tremendous and oh-so convenient benefit. One location for the mindbody connection? We’re in.

As for her new approach? “There will be three components to my new practice. The first is concierge services that will, first and foremost, offer excellent, as well as personalized and loving, medical care. With an emphasis on wellness and prevention, each patient and I will devise a plan in which we agree on an individualized menu of healthcare services and amenities. This essentially means each patient will face less of those time consuming and inefficient barriers, have direct access to me, and more time during appointments to ensure we resolve and address their concerns with little to no wait time. This option eliminates those scheduling hurdles with same day or next day appointments,” she shares.

Being well-versed in the aesthetic service arena, this will be the second component of Clarity Concierge as patients have often asked to combine these services in one visit. For example, if a patient is coming in for a check-up, they may want their Botox injections at the same time. And, her private practice will allow for just that!

Committed to providing the best aesthetic options, Clare adds, “I’m a well-trained and a long-time provider of aesthetic services. I not only provide Botox and fillers, I will soon offer the Optimus platform. This holds the Morpheus 8 for face, neck and body tightening. It’s basically a non-surgical advanced needling treatment to promote collagen production and address the skins elasticity, wrinkles, lines, and sagging. I am also excited to offer the Lumecca—the most advanced technology that provides the fastest results. Using IPL, intense pulsed light therapy, I can improve the color and texture of your skin without surgery. I’m also offering DiolazeXL. This is an advanced laser hair removal procedure that safely and gently eliminates unwanted hair. Able to target the largest treatment areas, it makes treatments convenient and fast. The combination of efficacy, patient comfort, and speed make this a leader in laser hair removal.

Continuing on the whole-patient approach, her third offering will be focused on weight loss. Going hand in hand with health, this is not only a passion for Clare, it just makes sense. Refusing to send her patients away with no options for losing weight, she shares, “I’m offering an actual weight loss clinic. My goal is to dig deeper into the reasons for weight gain and help provide tools to overcome and successfully lose weight following guideline-based practices. This clinic will focus on obesity from several angles like diagnosing and treat-

ing underlying causes, behavioral tools, nutritional analysis, activity, and pharmaceutical options. Knowing a lot of people need help in this arena, I’ve made these prices very affordable as well.”

Driven by her innate need to provide real solutions, Clare shares, “As an Internal Medicine physician, my job is to watch over a person’s overall healthcare. I make sure all the preventive care is being taken care of properly, but I also help coordinate care with subspecialists. I can act as an interpreter for those subspecialist visits, putting into regular terms what they are trying to accomplish. As for the aesthetics, I know my patients want to age a little more gracefully, that is what aesthetic medicine offers us. It gives us that extra confidence because, let’s face

it, when you look in the mirror, it’s nice to see a more rested, fresh ap pearance. And, I’ve found it promotes better self-care overall.”

Whether preventing diabetes or wrinkles, and knowing preventa tive care is the way of the future, running her own practice allows Clare to use common sense. Knowing patients can easily fall through the cracks of the increasingly complicated medical system, she shares, “A perfect example of falling through the cracks is medication recon ciliation. This occurs when all the medications a patient takes are re viewed and updated. This is an opportunity to discover changes, side effects, compliance, and sometimes dangerous combinations. Some times, this is not done or not completed. Not to mention the exposure

“AS AN INTERNAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN, MY JOB IS TO WATCH OVER A PERSON’S OVERALL HEALTHCARE. I MAKE SURE ALL THE PREVENTIVE CARE IS BEING TAKEN CARE OF PROPERLY, BUT I ALSO HELP COORDINATE CARE WITH SUBSPECIALISTS. I CAN ACT AS AN INTERPRETER FOR THOSE SUBSPECIALIST VISITS, PUTTING INTO REGULAR TERMS WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH.”

“AS FOR THE AESTHETICS, I KNOW MY PATIENTS WANT TO AGE A LITTLE MORE GRACEFULLY, THAT IS WHAT AESTHETIC MEDICINE OFFERS US. IT GIVES US THAT EXTRA CONFIDENCE BECAUSE, LET’S FACE IT, WHEN YOU LOOK IN THE MIRROR, IT’S NICE TO SEE A MORE RESTED, FRESH APPEARANCE. AND, I’VE FOUND IT PROMOTES BETTER SELF-CARE OVERALL.”

to illnesses in crowded waiting rooms, the endless forms, and so-on!”

To address these various challenges, it comes down to being independent and doing medicine her way. “I approach each patient as though they are a member of my own family. Even if I do not come from the same background or experiences, I try to understand people where they are and meet them there. I hope that they walk away with a feeling of being listened to and cared about rather than being shuffled through a tight schedule and system,” she concludes.

If Clare’s new practice sounds interesting, reach out and she and her team will ensure a smooth transition. “I know switching health care providers can be anxiety producing to say the least! But, my team and I are ready and able to manage the transition for those looking for this personalized, patientfirst care,” she assures.

As for working in close proximity to her husband, Clare jokes, “This will be a bit of a balancing act on the home front as we are both quite busy. I really wish I could turn off Jack’s mind from time to time, but he goes 90 to nothing all the time! Now that we will possibly share more patient journeys, turning it off will likely be our biggest challenge!”

Interestingly, Clare returned from Poland not long ago where she served in Alabama’s National Guard for four months. Jack and their sons, Jacob (16) and Max (14), all managed in her absence. So, it’s safe to say, they’ve got this. As for Clare? “Poland definitely made me realize how lucky we are in America to have access to lots of different types of health care, even in smaller cities. This has made me more than optimistic that my new practice will not only be successful, but a welcomed practice, too. I began practicing medicine in 2016, and since then I’ve been nominated for best doctor in Mobile four times and won twice! I’m ready!”

Considered the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered; no community is safe from this poison. Inspired by an email from a concerned school official, and knowing parents are overwhelmed by the mere thought of it, we reached out to Bradley J. Sadler, MD, the founder of Southern Psychiatry Associates, for his subject expertise and the need-to-know information about the fentanyl crisis.

FENTANYL CONVERSATION 74

If you live in Baldwin County with school-age children, you might recall the alarming email sent to parents in November from Superintendent, Eddie Tyler. With much concern, he shared details about fentanyl and begged parents to read every word about why this drug is keeping him awake at night. Also splashed all over the national news, our interest piqued and we leaned into our relationship with Dr. Sadler for a better understanding.

For starters, fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid similar to morphine, but 50 to 100 times more potent. It was involved in 884 adolescent deaths in 2021 – up from 253 just two years earlier, according to a recent report published by the Journal of the American Medical Association. And, while those numbers may not scare you, it’s important to know fentanyl is everywhere, including our own sacred cities.

No stranger to this crisis, Dr. Sadler tells us, “Fentanyl is a cheap and incredibly potent opioid pain medicine. It is mainly used in very severe pain situations like terminal cancer, and even miniscule amounts can kill people. Because it’s so cheap, it’s being pressed into counterfeit pills sold as pain killers through countries like Mexico. It’s being added to all kinds of abusable drugs like cocaine and heroin. I’ve even read about it being added to marijuana that is being sold illegally.”

A well-established expert in not only psychiatric issues ranging from depression to mood disorders, Dr. Sadler prides himself on his cutting-edge approach and treatments in helping those who face addictions. Interestingly, addiction is a colloquial term, and not a medical term like substance use disorder he informs us. Explaining his experience he shares, “Having helped people with substance use disorders since I came out of residency in 2007, I initially did it because I found it to be so rewarding. When someone can be helped to get off of abusable substances it is quite amazing. It also became personal in 2017 when my 20-year-old nephew died of a fentanyl overdose. It was mixed in with some pills that he bought. This was more than devastating for our family and reaffirmed my belief that it’s lifesaving and worthwhile to help people who have this disease.”

As for his experience in the fentanyl realm, he shares, “Most people are not abusing fentanyl. They are abusing other drugs and fentanyl has been added without their knowledge. And, since people who abuse drugs are at the mercy of their supplier, if the supply they get is tainted by fentanyl, the possibility of overdosing is very real. Especially given the fact that even a small amount can be lethal. Sadly, it’s crept up as one of the leading cause of deaths in young people.”

Wanting to understand what it is about youth and drugs, Dr. Sadler shares, “Unfortunately adolescence is a time of experimentation and sometimes rebellion against authority. This coupled with the fact that their frontal lobes, the decision makers of our brain, are not fully formed put adolescence and young adults at in-

“FENTANYL IS A CHEAP AND INCREDIBLY POTENT OPIOID PAIN MEDICINE. I’ve even read about it being added to marijuana that is being sold illegally.”

creased risk for coming across fentanyl added to controlled or illegal substances. Unfortunately, the brain finishes developing and maturing in the mid-to-late 20s. And the frontal lobe is one of the last parts to mature.”

Curious why and how substance abuse occurs in our youth, Dr. Sadler states, “Many people can experiment with abusable substances and not develop a problem. However, due to factors like genetic susceptibility, certain people can be overcome by the powerful reinforcing effect of these medicines. All drugs of abuse mediate reward through the reward pathway of the brain. This pathway is evolutionarily designed to promote life sustaining behavior like eating, sex, and sleep when work-

size they should not to take any pills not prescribed by their doctor and that no pill purchased on social media is safe. When age appropriate, explain that fentanyl has been found in most illegal drugs and even help your child create an exit strategy so they know what to do if they’re pressured to try pills, or any drug for that matter.”

Committed to treating all substance abuse disorders, Dr. Sadler offers the most effective and up-to-date opioid/fentanyl treatment available. “If a family is faced with this disorder or suspect usage, it’s vital they seek immediate help, starting with a call to 911 or a fast trip to the emergency room. From there, my team and I can help with a full psychiatric examination and then treatment of any mood disorders as well as addressing the issues related to abusable substances. This may include encouraging rehab, detox or putting the patient on a lifesaving drug like Suboxone.”

And while this topic is disturbing, it is a common misconception that fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin, but it is not true for casual exposure. You can’t overdose on fentanyl by touching a doorknob or dollar bill. So, there’s one thing off the worry list. For Dr. Sadler, “This knowledge is always meant to help parents meet their children where they are, rather than invoking fear. Understanding their world simply enables parents to parent more effectively. And, if I can help even one family avoid the tragic loss my family and I experienced, I’ll consider it a big win.”

ing properly. For some people, when they take an abusable substance like cannabis, heroin or cocaine, it causes such an intense stimulation of that pathway that it can lead to more and more use. Eventually this can become destructive or deadly to the individual.”

Not only faced with the fentanyl threat, parents are also in the trenches with the mental health crisis, too. “I don’t separate substance abuse from mental health. Often overlapping, my team of physicians, therapists and I treat the diseases of depression, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders simultaneously. Substance abuse can be a crippling disorder for the patient and parents. We use a multimodal approach with both medicines and therapy designed to help the patient get their life back on track. We are able to diagnose and treat any underlying psychiatric illness that may also complicate the substance abuse picture.”

It’s important for parents to know that fentanyl is being pushed to drive an-oh so profitable addiction. “Often made in a rainbow of candy-like colors, lab testing has revealed that four out of every ten fake pills with fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose. The pills are also being made to look like Xanax, Adderall and other common medications, too. One pill can kill with a dose small enough to fit on the tip of a pencil. Also found in vaping liquids, pods and cartridges, drug traffickers are using smart phones and social media to advertise and sell to easy targets—children. Even found in middle schools, the drug landscape is dramatically different from just a few years ago.”

Even if a parent or caregiver doesn’t suspect their children may be abusing drugs or alcohol, Dr. Sadler advises being especially cautious and looking for the signs. “Many parents may have a hard time believing that their child is engaging in these behaviors. The best approach is to encourage open and honest communication at a young age. Empha-

COCKTAIL KING

Just when you thought all the celebrating was over, we’re here to remind you that St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. And, with their usual flair, the team behind Matt LeMond’s bar and restaurant group is busy getting green with a plethora of events for families and friends. Ready to try your luck with a glittery green cocktail and a set with the legendary band, Phunky Monkeys? Here’s what’s not to miss.

Greetings!

Downtown has always been a magical place and it just keeps getting better. I love the eclectic mix of people from near and far that support the unique on-going events that range from parades to roller skating. With so many new establishments, it’s an exciting time and it just keeps getting better. Downtown Mobile truly comes alive during celebratory times, and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception. And that’s why we are in fact planning an over-the-top March 17th block party.

From our two POST Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar locations to The Outsider and O’Daly’s Irish Pub, we’ve got big green day plans and everyone’s welcome. Prior to the big parade, and starting at 6 a.m., we’re hosting Eggs & Kegs at O’Daly’s to ensure everyone gets off to the right start. We’ll kick-off this 80s themed event with local musicians at 7 a.m., and Chee-Weez, a favorite 80s tribute band from New Orleans, will take the stage at 10 p.m. We’ll even have a green dye tent, yard games, give aways and more.

For our POST friends in Spring Hill and downtown, both locations will open at noon and toast the day with green champagne, build your own bloody Mary bar, and a tater tot bar to boot. The Outsider, just down the block from O’Daly’s, will have a range of family-friendly music acts starting at 4 p.m. with the Phunky Monkeys, a highly entertaining and energetic band, starting at 7 p.m. The Outsider will also host a St. Patrick’s Day Market featuring all types of local goods that opens at 6 p.m. The bar and adjoining food hall, The Insider, will open at 11 a.m. to ensure everyone has a good meal to ramp up for the festivities. From the Hammered Cow burgers to the Poke bowls, you can’t beat the option or dishes! As a long-time downtown Mobile business owner, my top tip is to dig out your green and join us for a top-notch celebration regardless of whether you’re Irish or not!

As women, we live on one speed—over drive. Prioritizing daily downtime can feel like a chore itself. But, we don’t have to tell you that and all the other negative effects that come from putting yourself last. But, what Sydney Wasdin

Hello,!

This advice might seem obvious, but as women we typically put ourselves last which leaves us feeling exhausted. This negatively impacts our lives physically and mentally, and although we know this, we can’t seem to rally. Reasons biological, psychological and societal can explain this phenomenon, but I want to focus on how you can start a successful path to feeling better and creating more space for you.

So, what can you do? If you’re tired of being sick and tired, it’s time to make a true commitment to change, and be ready to adjust your expectations for what “change” might look like for you. Change is hard and hard to hold yourself accountable to, but try to keep in mind when you’re trying to rationalize why you “can’t today” that people often subconsciously seek to avoid things they need to face or do, which can easily become a habit that impedes your progress.

If you’re overloaded, first you need to take a good look at what you’re doing and have “on your plate” and what all you’re actually doing and taking on. Include household chores, family maintenance, job responsibilities, all the things, extras included. Making a list to visibly see it can help you recognize what all you are actually doing. Then comes the hard part- see what you’re willing to let go of and take off your plate and what you can delegate to others or recruit some help on. Take special consideration of what you can actually directly control and what your personal responsibilities are. For extras that come up you don’t necessarily have to do but may want to do, be mindful of what you truly have the energy to take on, and be honest with yourself.

With whatever extra time or energy this may allow, you may have more time to schedule some TLC for yourself as well as quality time with your family members and/or friends! That may be easier said than done when you keep a busy schedule and are accustomed to doing for others, but making the effort to prioritize that time for yourself to attend to your own personal needs is equally if not more important than the rest of your agenda. You are just as important as your loved ones and you are deserving of personal peace! Having that time and modeling the importance of self-care (and self-regulation) is actually also a vital lesson for everyone in your household and it allows you to be a more present (and perhaps less stressed) mom, wife, and human. But at least try making the most out of what small moments you do have available!

Some good “me time” suggestions are: going for a walk, moving your body in a way that feels good for you (yoga, Pilates, cycling, lifting, other fitness formats), getting back to things you love doing or learning something new, prepping and eat nutritious food, connecting thru quality time with loved ones, and most importantly, rest. You may need to re-learn how to rest, as well, so employing meditation and diaphragmic breathing daily, beginning with just 1-5 minutes for beginners, can help with this. Speaking of rest, prioritizing getting enough sleep and your sleep hygiene for better quality sleep is also a mental health game changer. These habits may be hard to keep up at first, but remember it takes time and practice so be gentle with yourself through the process and take small steps at a given time for greater likelihood of sustaining new habits! You can always build on them from there!

Lastly, it’s important to check in with your healthcare providers for their advice and it may also be time to enlist a counselor/therapist who can help you stay focused and accountable as well as identify road blocks you may not be aware of to help you make an attainable and sustainable plan while addressing any mental health concerns and goals you might have- even if it’s just to stress less or find yourself in your life again!

Making Your Money MATTER

While much of this advice is seemingly simple, many people delay or skip these simple steps and end up regretting it later. While everyone’s financial circumstances are as unique as the everchanging financial industry, this area is my specialty. So, if these mistakes have been on your to-address list for a bit too long, I’d love to help.

1. NOT HAVING AN EMERGENCY FUND

If the pandemic taught us anything about finances, it’s the importance of having an emergency fund. From unexpected events such as a job loss or unplanned medical expenses, not having funds set aside forces us to use expensive methods to finance hardships. This can include taking on high-interest credit card debt or loans that can negatively impact your credit score as well., which in turn results in even more damage. However, even if you start small, building an emergency fund is essential to getting ahead financially.

2. PAYING OFF DEBT INEFFICIENTLY

If you have an array of debt like student loans, a car payment, credit card and a mortgage, it can be hard to know what to tackle first. It’s important to know that not all debt is created equal. Debt on an appreciating asset, like a mortgage, is vastly different from the short term debt that anchors people (i.e.credit cards, student loans, auto loans).

Naturally, every situation is different, however, one of the biggest mistakes I see is aggressively attacking short term debt when there is no liquidity/savings in place. This leads to that “hamster wheel” effect where someone goes back and forth between paying down debt and accruing more. By building ample liquidity first, you put yourself in a position to permanently stay clear of short term debt.

3.

MISSING OUT ON EMPLOYER MATCHING CONTRIBUTIONS

Everyone needs to understand their employers 401 (K) match programs to ensure their taking full advantage of this benefit. Many, especially younger employees, don’t realize these accounts also offer tax advantages, too. If not contributing, you could essentially be leaving free money on the table. Every contribution helps and the earlier you get started, the better off you’ll be.

4. ALLOWING ‘LIFESTYLE CREEP’ TO OCCUR

When your income increases, it’s not surprising to find yourself splurging more often than you used to. This is often referred to as “lifestyle creep.” However, by planning for increases in salary or bonuses, you give yourself the opportunity to improve your standard of living in the future. And while that may sound unattractive, financial planners like myself are able to advise you on how you may best be able to make this

Now that the king cake is gone and the balls are over, it’s the perfect time to get back down to business. And knowing a simple summary often serves us best, Justin Law, our go-to financial advisor, tells us 4 mistakes we need to avoid in order to help maximize our hard-earned money.

Local jewelry designer and founder of Harvest Jewels, Rosemary McGowan Corte, believes in everyday diamonds that go from carpool to cocktails. Here to second that, Charlotte Kilborn Carey catches up with her to discuss these timeless handcrafted treasures, Dolly Parton, her cultlike following and more.

For Harvest Jewels creator, Rosemary McGowan Corte, the road to success was literally pavé-ed with diamonds. Having studied interior design and art history and then crunching numbers for years, she could no longer stifle her creative calling. From there, this busy mom put her visions on paper, put in the sweat equity and the rest is history.

When describing her designs, Rosemary’s go-to response is, “Not fine or costume, but quality jewelry with gemstones and pearls that can be worn every day.” Hence her tagline “Everyday Diamonds.” Believing good jewelry isn’t just for special occasions and that women should have pieces that go day to night, every item has a diamond. After all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right?

Originally inspired by the natural elements and colors surrounding her life in Baldwin county, she now offers incredible pendants that reflect her love of SEC football and collegiate life. Harkening back to her art history roots, her work is also influenced by old architecture and textiles she admires when traveling.

When asked if she drew inspiration from any role models, she shares, “I look up to Dolly Parton. She came from nothing and built an amazing life and business for herself. I love her self-deprecating humor and her devotion to children’s literacy. It’s the giving back when successful that’s the most important.”

As for personal satisfaction, she adds, “When a client lets me know a piece absolutely made their outfit or made them feel beautiful and self-confident. How lucky am I that I can help women feel great about themselves!” Through her success, she hopes to show women that they can have something of their own that gives them purpose and an income. In that vein, she’s working to add Harvest Gives Back. “Creating this business has been a blessing in so many ways and I want to help other women,” she shares.

As for the future? “I’d like to have a bigger reach, maybe even international! I love the travel and meeting great women at my trunk shows.” Her favorite piece? “The Marti necklace made from an assortment of cut gemstones, it goes with everything!”

As an avid collector, Rosemary’s pieces really do make even a simple blouse and jean combo look polished and upscale. Without a doubt, you’ll see me wearing my favorite Harvest Jewels every day—from the grocery store to the Pink Carpet.
