Yes, technically speaking, we designed the Lexus ES. But before any aluminum is cast or any bolt is tightened, we start with the driver as our guide. That means prior to thinking about the car, we consider the person—like positioning a new touchscreen four inches closer to the reach of your fingertips. So from our ES FSPORT to the ES Hybrid to the all-wheel drive ES, it’s more you than you know.

With so much going on in our community, dedicating most of an issue to our true love, fashion, can be challenging. However, the stars aligned for this issue when we found three amazing women from various walks of life — all killing it and fashion fans, too. Demonstrating grace under pressure, and style at every turn, while taking charge of their lives, we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. Whether steeped in carving out the life and business roles they want or facing the challenges of aging, each opened up to reveal their personal hurdles and prove you can never judge a book by its cover. No matter how young, attractive, or seemingly happy, we all have struggles. Too often, I hear women blocking their own happiness with disparaging self-depreciating comments and it is truly heart breaking. Inspired by this trio’s dedication to incorporating self-love through daily difficulties, I hope their voices encourage kinder self-talk. Outside of the self-talk realm, the latest national obsession, Ozempic and the other similar weight loss drugs, have reached the frenzy level. And while we’re all about self-love, weight concerns can pose serious health risks. Barraged with information, we decided to check in with Bay area care providers to get the scoop and to understand what’s available locally. As we shift into spring and summer (Sprummer?), we hope you delight in the local fashion on the following pages. With so much color at our fingertips, we bid those grey days adieu! Enjoy!

TRADITIONS & TRANSITIONS
At her recent art exhibition opening at downtown Mobile’s Sophiella Gallery, B’Beth Weldon presented her new collection titled “Traditions and Transitions” to rave reviews. Having grown up in the Bay area, B’Beth has long revered her strong foundation built on rich Southern traditions. From her landscapes to her sport art and famed polo ponies, her local heritage has long-inspired her work. Becoming a part-time resident of Greece during the pandemic, B’Beth welcomed the transition of becoming totally immersed in a new culture steeped in thousands of years of history and art. This too, made a profound impact. “I found myself both open and challenged with so many changes at once. It has been a beautiful experience as I have found myself holding on to my childhood cornerstones while embracing this new lifestyle and country with wonderment and joy. While holding on to who I am, these elements of change began to appear in my paintings as well. And although my style has remained constant, it has blossomed and evolved.
“Traditions and Transitions” represents the beautiful shifts in life when we welcome and embrace change,” she tells us.
With a lively Who’s Who crowd from near and far, guests enjoyed beautiful blooms from Wildflowers Floral Design, and mingling over cocktails and incredible bites from none other than caterer, Georgia Roussos. Think Baklava and charcuterie for days. An aptly named collection, it was clear to see the impact of B’Beth’s transition in her recent paintings as guests and art enthusiasts alike agreed they have taken on a new life—much like B’Beth herself. From bold colors and brush strokes, her new landscapes and abstracts prove the beautiful shift in life she’s encountered have influenced her in many ways. New shapes in hues that seem both subtle and brave look familiar, yet totally fresh. The layers seem to go deeper but have that natural ease B’Beth is known for. One thing is certain, this collection is very new and fitting for both a coastal cottage or a city high-rise. Be sure to visit Sophiella Gallery to review the collection. A fine art gallery in the heart of downtown Mobile, it’s not to be missed and neither is this collection. Congratulations B’Beth!

ANNUAL LUNCHEON
The Drug Education Council (DEC) recently hosted its highly anticipated 26th annual luncheon at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile. Dedicated to ensuring the issues surrounding substance use disorder, addiction, and prevention, remain a priority in the community, the team ensures that vital assistance is always available for families and individuals in crisis. A sold-out event, guests enjoyed various speakers such as the honorable Mayor, Sandy Stimpson, and a heart-warming performance by singersongwriter-pianist, John McAndrew. A non-profit founded in 1967 the DEC led by the fearless Executive Director, Virginia Guy. Their essential work covers the famed DeBakey Drug Education vehicle, a traveling high-tech learning lab, that educates students along the coast, as well as training, workshops, anonymous juvenile drug testing, and a new national anti-vaping campaign.

DRESSING THE ABBEY
In honor of The History Museum of Mobile’s exhibition, “Dressing the Abbey,” the team hosted a roaring good time at downtown Mobile’s Cedar Street Social Club. Boasting several original costumes worn on the hit television series “Downton Abbey” at the museum, this spin-off soiree was the toast of the town as guests celebrated in period themed looks as flappers, vamps and more. Local enthusiasts enjoyed a customized 1920s themed cocktail class with the always entertaining bar tender extraordinaire, Tyler Sayers. The speakeasy vibes enhanced the learning experience behind making the aristocratic Crawley family classic cocktails—The Old Fashioned, The Lady Edith, and, of course, The Earl of Grantham.

To put it bluntly, we were instantly captivated by Monica Gray. By chance, we stumbled into her at a local estate sale as she breezed in with an energy, look, and confidence that doesn’t go unnoticed. She makes living the stylish-life look as easy as a top-rated influencer and is as sweet as she can be to boot. Smitten, we struck up a conversation and were so impressed that we promptly booked a photoshoot and interview. Thoughtful, humble and oh-so successful, she’s both an entrepreneur and an advocate for women. And, did we mention she’s part of the Kenny Chesney empire, too?

hile it’s not her only gig, Monica’s main job is the SVP of marketing at Blue Chair Bay Rum—a spectacular first-rate rum inspired by the island lifestyle of multi-platinum singer-songwriter Kenny Chesney. And after treating us to a round of Key Lime Coladas made with the brand’s Key Lime Rum Cream, we were hooked.
Born on the beach, every drop of this delicious rum is made in the Caribbean from sugarcane, molasses, and natural ingredients. “It’s an award-winning premium brand infused with Kenny Chesney’s heart and soul. He worked with one of the world’s best master blenders, Mike Booth, to create the blends. As for my role, I develop the marketing plans from concept to execution. You name it I do it. From campaigns, social media, digital, advertising, point-of-sale, online sales, events, tours, public relations, partnerships, influencers, and creative packaging and design, I lead six smart and talented marketing individuals who help me make it all happen,” Monica tells us.
With flavors ranging from Spiced, White, Coconut, Banana, Vanilla, Key Lime Rum Cream, Banana Rum Cream, Pineapple Rum Cream, Coconut Spiced Rum Cream and Mocha Rum Cream, we’ve found our summer go-to. And, if you find yourself at the Flora-Bama, be sure to try them out as they truly are summer in a cup.
As for how Monica feels about what must be a highly desired position, she shares, “I’ve been with Blue Chair Bay Rum since it was launched 10 years ago. I’ve had the honor of launching and building a successful brand alongside an owner who is passionate about his brand, music, and island lifestyle. Authenticity and passion are two values I have learned from Kenny Chesney!”
Naturally, we need to know her favorite cocktail. “I love the skinny coconut Mojito. Made with the Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum, coconut water, limes, mint, and club soda, it’s refreshing and perfect for sipping on the back porch and beach. The Key Lime Colada is the perfect indulgence and is my favorite to enjoy at the Flora-Bama. Made with Blue Chair Bay Key Lime Rum Cream and Coconut Rum, pineapple and orange juice, cream of coconut and ice, it’s the perfect dessert on a hot day! I also love adding the Blue Chair Bay Mocha Rum Cream to my coffee on a beach vacation!”
Clearly an incredible brand ambassador with a full cup, she decided to challenge herself and add entrepreneurship to her agenda. Curious as to her why, she shares, “I love bringing joy to others, it makes me happy. Party planning and providing others with an experience they’ll never forget is what makes running my two event businesses manageable!” she beams.
Monica recently founded The Southern Charm Picnic Company and the AL Sleepy Teepee. “Customized luxury picnics became trendy in 2020 on the West coast. When I decided to bring the idea to the Gulf Coast, I knew it would be a fresh and fun success. We’ve created 300+ picnics, and this season has brought a new perspective to the word custom! From creating one-ofa-kind celebrations like a groovy kid’s birthday picnic and a golf themed option, we’re able to be creative with what we offer because of the unbeatable inventory we have,” she shares.
Dress, $220; CK Collection;251.990.9001. 26
With the goal of providing the most memorable experiences, Monica tells us, “I add a personal touch to each picnic that ranges from premium to pop-up options that can be enjoyed at the beach, bay, boat, balcony, or backyard. For example, we offer incredible tablescapes complete with Martha May’s Charcuterie, florals from Fairhope’s Wild Flowers, plush pillows, poufs and blankets for seating, coordinated umbrellas and detailed decor, speakers for music, and even a polaroid camera to capture special moments.”
Going the extra mile, Monica added a luxury boat ride picnic and cruise where you can ride around the canals of Orange Beach with Anonyme Cruises. “Our cabana service allows guests to take their beach day to the next level as we setup a beautiful chic white cabana with chairs, towels, beach blankets, sunscreen, a speaker, a cooler with ice and water, and fun beach floats, too! From anniversaries and birthdays to bachelorette and friend parties, we offer decorating and full planning for the perfect experiences.”
Since over-the-top bachelorette parties have become very trendy, bachelorette decorating and planning services are a true specialty unique to Monica. “Leaning into my experience, I partner with local brands and companies to elevate these occasions. All of the relationships I’ve developed over my career, like Blue Chair Bay Rum and more, have allowed me to offer truly customized experiences,” she shares.
Serving the Gulf Coast, the Eastern Shore and Mobile, she also owns and operates AL Sleepy Teepee. “With a focus on fun teepees, we create a magical birthday party or celebration experience for children as well as adults of all ages. We offer a list of themes, plan and set up the party, take it down the following day, and even do the laundry! These teepee parties are always a huge hit and leave a lasting impression on all of your campers,” Monica states.
Rising at 4 AM most days, Monica takes an hour to have coffee by herself and worship. From there, she works a full day and cuts it off at 6 PM to spend time with her family. “It’s important to find a work-life balance and I do my best with everything we have going on. When possible, I take my kids, Carson, 7, and Beckham, 5, with me to picnic and teepee setups and on tour with Blue Chair Bay Rum and Kenny Chesney. Teaching our kids to work hard and create the life they want is so important to my husband Mark and I. My planner is my best friend and how I keep everything straight,” Monica adds.
In terms of self-care, Monica shares that working out keeps her sane and allows her to release stress. “And, I am very faithful. My morning worship has allowed me to come up with great ideas and solutions for all my problems. I believe you can’t do anything without the good Lord leading the charge!”
When it comes to her style, she shares, “I love running around in Lululemon shorts and a t-shirt with a messy bun! But, I’m also obsessed with the glitter and glam! I would wear sequins or bright prints every day if I could. Some of my favorite brands are Generation Love, Anthropologie, Revolve, Alice + Olivia, Draper James, LoveShackFancy and Betsey Johnson. I love Dolly Parton and the glitz she brings to the country music world. Everything she does and represents is my jam. I also adore Reese Witherspoon for her Southern style with a fresh twist on the relaxed mom look.”

As for her home? “Savannah Starring, the owner The House in Fairhope, has helped me take my sense of style and apply it to my own home. We designed it to be a twist of Dolly meets Anthology. From the pink and teal color palettes to the disco ball in the butler’s pantry, I want our guests to kick back and enjoy the space. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Savannah’s guidance,” Monica tells us.
Originally from Colorado, Monica’s parents came to Gulf Shores for a family reunion, feel in love with the town, and proceeded to buy a condo for family vacations. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in 2015 by hurricane Ivan. However, they retired here in 2016. And, after living in Nashville for 9 years, getting married and having children, Monica and her husband decided they wanted to be closer to family. Having married at, the Flora-Bama of all places, they made the move in 2020. Monica shares, “We looked at locations at the beach but fell in love with Fairhope as we wanted that sweet small-town feel!”
Like most of us, they enjoy family walks by the bluff and through town, and grabbing an ice cream at Gene’s Beans. “I also love to shop at Sway, Sadie’s, CK Collection, Christina Lynns, The House and Wildflowers, and eating at the Hope Farm, Master Joes, and Pearl. I’ve been skiing since I was 3, so I still love the thrill of skiing the back country in Colorado. Enjoying a beach day with my kids and family is also one of our favorite things to do. Music is a passion for my entire family so
taking the kids to shows is always on the list, too,” she shares.
As for the future? “When I was younger I dreamed of what it would be like to work for a celebrity. It seemed impossible. I worked hard to make that dream come true. I’ve learned how to push forward in the male-dominated liquor industry and grow a brand from nothing to a multi-million-dollar company. And, from there, I started my own successful businesses. I cannot wait to help other women find the confidence and passion to create their own businesses. In my friend circle, I love talking about what they’re passionate about, helping them coming up with marketing ideas, and encouraging them to gain the confidence that they can create the businesses they dream about. Through consulting and retreats, this will be the next thing I do.” And, after watching her and her team hustle to execute flawless set ups for this feature, we don’t doubt her one bit.

WONDER WOMAN
Debbie Richards is not only a happy fixture around Spring Hill in Mobile, she’s a fashion icon and role model, too. At 70 years young, she’s a family first kind of gal with an interesting past in the fashion world where she learned just as much about being true to herself as she did about style. On any given day you might see her and her glorious grey locks cruising around on her bicycle in a t-shirt and jeans or out at an event in multi-pattern ensemble that just works. However, beyond the looks, you’ll always notice her big smile first. Wondering about her positive outlook, especially as it pertains to age, she’s an open book that we can’t get enough of.

“IT BEGAN EARLY AS MY MOM MADE ALL MY CLOTHES. I LOVED SHOPPING FOR FABRICS AND THEN TELLING HER HOW I WANTED IT DESIGNED. AT 12 YEARS OLD, I GOT MY FIRST SEWING MACHINE AND MADE HER A DRESS THAT SHE ACTUALLY WORE!”
Born and raised in Mobile, Debbie is a known permanent fixture in her beloved hometown. Married to David for 46 years, the couple has five adult children and fifteen grandchildren ranging in ages from 6 months to 16 years old. In addition to being a wife, mother, and grandmother, Debbie has been a model, a vendor for mega-beauty brand, Loreal USA, and a retail associate for several local fashion boutiques. Debbie currently enjoys part-time positions at Rise Boutique in Spring Hill Village Shopping Center, which she describes as, “super cool”, as well as downtown Mobile’s fine art studio, Sophiella Gallery.
As for her introduction to fashion? “It began early as my mom made all my clothes. I loved shopping for fabrics and then telling her how I wanted it designed. At 12 years old, I got my first sewing machine and made her a dress that she actually wore! In 1968, I began modeling for Gayfer’s Teen Board. Interestingly, Gayfer’s was a regional department store chain based in Mobile from 1879 until 1998 when it was taken over by Dillard’s. It was a great way to not only engage in the fashion world, but many friendships and great memories were made along the way, too. I also modeled in college and then stopped to get married and start a family. I thought I couldn’t do both, but after my third child, I decided to go for it and have been doing it ever since,” she fondly recalls.
Asking for a top memory, Debbie shares, “At the age of 40, I was one of five finalists from across the country for a Ladies Home Journal and Dove Soap contest. I won a trip to New York City and a write up in the magazine. I even made the table of contents! Another exciting day was a fashion photoshoot on a boat I did for Raphael’s Women’s clothing store when I was pregnant with my fifth child. Determined to make my own luck, I walked into the store in my homemade outfit I had designed and told them that I wanted to do print work for them! From there, they sent me straight to the Barney and Patrick advertising agency and the rest was history!” she beams.
“MY FAVORITE CHALLENGE IS WHEN SOMEONE SAYS, ‘I CAN’T WEAR THAT.’ YES YOU PROBABLY CAN, WE JUST STYLE IT DIFFERENTLY!”

Having her foot in the fashion pool for most of her life, she’s developed a solid and admirable philosophy, especially considering the youth-obsessed industry. “When it comes to aging, I prefer to age naturally and I believe our smile is our best accessory. I also approach aging with a ‘what you see is what you get’ attitude and simply try to be thankful for each day. I preach that we all should embrace our age, and enjoy it as everyone will be old one day— if they are lucky,” Debbie adds.
As for her influencers? “My style icon has always been Audrey Hepburn. She was simply a classic in both her fashion and humanitarian efforts. More recently, Maye Musk is helping all of us senior fashionistas, too. A model, influencer, and dietitian, she has been a model for 50 years, appearing on the covers of magazines, including Time, Women’s Day, international editions of Vogue, and Sports Illustrated. In my mind, every day is a fashion show! My go-to favorite looks include jeans, graphic tshirts, black turtlenecks, blazers, and gold hoop earrings,” Debbie shares.
Defining her as a micro-influencer due to her honed ability to help women find looks they love and that work best for them, Debbie adds, “My biggest asset is that I love to talk! I’ll engage anyone and my favorite challenge is when someone says, ‘I can’t wear that.’ Yes you probably can, we just style it differently! I’m inspired by a range of quotes like the one hanging over my dresser, ‘If you like it, wear it’, and Coco Chanel’s, ‘You can be gorgeous at thirty, charming at forty and irresistible for the rest of your life,’ and ‘Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself’—all true!”

Curious as to why she’s so happy, she shares, “I’ve happily lived on The Cedars Avenue in Spring Hill for 44 years. I’ve raised my family here and now my grands come by every day after school to visit and I get to watch them participate in all their extracurricular activities. I also have a personal nonprofit, ‘Happy Flowers’, where I repurpose event flowers by taking them to places like nursing homes. This brings me so much joy! Plus, I have amazing part-time jobs and volunteer opportunities that allow me to still be a fashionista at 70 years old. I have made so many special friendships over the years that I am so thankful for, including my friends at Access!”
Firm in her belief that younger Debbie is pretty much the same as older Debbie, she has no regrets. As for what’s next? “I will continue to put my family first. But, when I was younger, the first car I purchased was a yellow Volkswagen Beetle and now finding an older model convertible option is on my bucket list. If anyone sees one for sale, let me know!” she exclaims.

KATHRYN
THE GREAT
Fairhope’s fashion-royalty, Kathryn White of CK Collection, has the job a million girls would kill for—and having coined that phrase, the cast of the iconic film, “The Devil Wears Prada” would absolutely agree. But for Kathryn, growing up in the fashion business has been a double-edged sword—albeit a beautiful, jewel-encrusted sword that she’s beyond grateful for. Here she shares her tales of growing up CK, her recent role, and a transformation so inspiring that we’re beaming with pride and cheering her on.

Funded by husband-and-wife team, Lisa and Tom White, the couple just celebrated their 27th anniversary as the owners and operators of CK Collection. Their store has not only stood the test of time, but it is also one of the Coast’s premiere shops for those who know and love fashion. Hanging in the closets of the area’s fashion elite, the team at CK has a keen understanding of the coastal dress code. And it’s also a family affair.
With a front row seat to the fashion world for most of her life, Kathryn fondly recalls, “Growing up with CK as my playground was a one-of-a-kind childhood. My parents opened it when I was just 3 years old, and it’s literally all I’ve ever known. As a child, I would play pretend while my parents worked. The cardboard boxes were my ‘houses’, and the industrial steamer was my old-timey telephone. I would play ‘business’ while my parents conducted theirs.”
Naturally, Kathryn started to tune-in. “As I got older, I noticed what my parents were actually doing, and I took an interest in the work and the beautiful things around me. I couldn’t wait to get older and fit into the big girl clothes. Able to converse with adults from an early age, the girls that worked in the shop were like my big sisters. I was fascinated with their dating stories and gossip! I don’t think you could give a child a better hands-on experience in interacting with others like that store gave my sister, Caroline, and I,” she beams.
All grown up, Kathryn has experienced first-hand just about every aspect of the business. “Growing up in fashion is a doubleedged sword. I’ve literally been surrounded by fabulous things my entire life. I am extremely blessed and very aware of the hard work my parents put in that allows me to have those things. On the flip side, I don’t have the same reaction to the beautiful things most girls have. I’m sure most would think that something comes into the store and I’m just in awe and feel like I must have it, but I don’t. I’m used to seeing a lot of beautiful things, but I realize that someone else will probably enjoy it more than I would. So, I leave them for someone else. I’m not jaded, but for me to react it
must be something extra special. When I go to market and see how some people in the industry occasionally act, I think it’s kind of silly. We are so lucky to get the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves. And while it’s fun, I don’t think people understand how much work it is,” she shares.
Humble, Kathryn also tells us, “As far as impact, I’m not sure I’ve made any impact yet. I contribute to the buying, but my mother and the other buyers have made CK Collection what it is today. My mother is the driving force in the product, and I’ve only recently come into my own with the store. I am finally old enough to know what I must do to learn from them. Before turning 30, I didn’t take it as seriously. I will get it, but not being able to measure up to what they have created is a real fear of mine. My parents’ work ethic and passion is second to none.”
Curious about her parents’ dynamic and whom she takes after, Kathryn shares, “My parents have very different personalities and I’d like to think I have the best of both. My mother is the face. She’s kind, creative, and truly loves working with people. My father is probably the funniest person ever once you get to know him, but he is firmer and more analytical. A fun fact about him is that he is very shy, and his brain never stops. I think I am warm and outgoing like my mother, and firm like my father. I have learned so much from them, and the amount of respect I have for them is beyond words. I only hope I make them proud. I still have so much to learn, but thankfully they are willing to help me.”
When it came to her education, Kathryn knew it had to be fashion at an early age. “I moved to New York City 20 days after turning 18 years old. I did not know a single person. It was always my dream, and I knew from the age of 9 that I was going to move there and go to fashion school. When I was 8 years old, my mom got my sister and I a Mary Kate and Ashley ‘fashion party’ VHS from which I learned there are colleges for fashion. When I was 9 years old, my parents took me to NYC for the first time and I sat in the Dolce and Gabbana and Marc Jacobs Collection showrooms. I knew immediately I’d grow up and work for one of them, and I did.”

Following her childhood dreams, Kathryn went to the heart of the fashion world. “I went to LIM College in Manhattan for a Fashion Merchandising degree. I worked at Marc Jacobs corporate and lived in NYC for almost 5 years before coming home to work for my parents. The rest is history! That experience made me grow up. I finally felt like I was home when I moved to New York, but I was grateful to come back to Fairhope and have the store waiting for me,” she shares.
As for how she describes CK? “Both the women’s and men’s shops are lifestyle stores. From every day to your most special moments, we have something for everyone no matter the occasion. We have college boys getting their game day shirts and first Barbour jackets and girls
picking out their homecoming dresses with their grandmothers grabbing a luncheon outfit. When we go to market, we have a general sense of what our clientele needs. Sometimes we see even something that just looks like a certain customer, and we will be like oh, ‘so and so will love that.’ It’s funny because those customers probably have no idea that happens, but it does!” she shares
Taking on a new role, Kathryn explains, “I was the men’s buyer for 8 years. It was such a fun learning experience and really gave me the space I needed to spread my wings while still under my parents’ umbrella. Now I am being moved on to the women’s team and I’ve handed over the men’s to Eric Sparks. He is so knowledgeable and

When asked about the new spring trends, Kathryn replies, “Dressing up! People want to dress up again. Suiting is huge. Trousers over jeans. Pattern on pattern. Matching sets. Lots of color and bold looks.” With a look of her own, she adds, “I like to push the boundaries and mix edgy pieces with classic items, while not being too trendy. I love mixing and matching men’s and women’s clothing like your boyfriends’ pants with a button down. My mother and I have very different styles, yet we agree on a lot. Other than pink!”
It’s been a busy year for Kathryn, both personally and professionally. “I am recently engaged to Gary Chilcutt. He’s the sweetest man that came out of nowhere and I could not be happier. I am 16 months sober. And while I wouldn’t say I had a problem; I was a party girl and when I decided that wasn’t adding anything to my life really great things started to happen. I have never been happier,” she beams.
A mental health advocate, Kathryn adds “I want to break the stigma and talk about it. Everyone struggles and giving up drinking and having ‘my year of self-discovery,’ completely transformed my life in a very short amount of time. I am in therapy and my parents have been my biggest cheerleaders. I am not ashamed to talk about that. I also eat super healthy, and my mental health is night and day. I think who I am now was always in there, but it was covered up by pain and bad decisions. I just wanted to be better and find happiness within myself and I found that. Being clear headed has been incredible and I wouldn’t have found Gary without doing the things I’ve done to be who I am now.”
As for their post wedding future? “We love to travel, and I want to keep CK going for as long as possible. I only hope that I can keep the legacy alive. Gary is the most supportive partner when it comes to the company and my parents are the greatest teachers, and of course there to cheer me on!”

MISTY’S MAGIC
This smart chick went from being a single mom looking for a solution that would allow her to honor her role as a mother and as a hard worker, to become an award-winning multi-franchise local business owner. Just back from Las Vegas where she was honored with Franchisee of the Year, she works side-by-side with the love of her life, Peter, too. Drawn to the Chicken Salad Chick platform for their family-like corporate approach, Misty and Peter employee 150+ locals, and together, they are one big happy family. Defining the word inspiration, Misty Hudson Whitehead shares why she crossed the road into the franchising world, and how it’s been better and more rewarding than she ever imagined. For us, she’s simply winner-winner chicken dinner and so much more.

With six franchises under her belt, and one coming to Fairhope soon, Misty’s hard work and success with the Chicken Salad Chick (CSC) brand has not gone unnoticed. A self-proclaimed control freak, this busy mom, wife, and entrepreneur extraordinaire was recently recognized in Las Vegas by The International Franchise Association (IFA) for being an outstanding franchise establishment owner-operator. “Franchisee of the Year recipients represent the best in franchising,” said Matthew Haller, president and CEO of the IFA. “This is the highest honor IFA awards to individual franchisees, and local business owners like Misty exemplify the power of franchising and its positive contributions to communities around the world.”
Clearly a very big deal, it’s interesting to know there are approximately 800,000 franchised businesses across the U.S., providing over 8.4 million direct jobs and generating over $800 billion in economic output. According to Oxford Economics, franchising on average provides higher wages and better benefits than non-franchised businesses, as well as greater entrepreneurial opportunities to minorities, women, veterans, and other underrepresented communities. Nominated by their parent company, individuals are selected for their service to their communities, fostering a strong and vibrant workforce, opening the doors for career growth and entrepreneurship, and supporting their fellow franchisees, Misty was an obvious choice.
Looking for the back story as to how she found the franchise opportunity that is clearly a perfect fit for her as well as how she advises others, Misty tells us, “I certainly think you have to be with the right franchise. There are some out there that just churn and burn to open as many locations as possible and they don’t care about their people. This is the complete opposite! CSC corporate works with me and my husband, Peter, to pick the best locations. We purchase reliable reports that predict future growth and we decide together as a team. As far as being a woman and jumping into this business, I was terrified initially, but I knew I have a marketing brain and knew I could make it work! I am 100% certain that Peter and I being involved in our restaurants daily has a lot to do with our success. We visit with guests every day, deliver catering orders, make repairs, deliver change, you name it! We absolutely love being involved and knowing our staff and guests.”
Naturally Misty encountered her fair share of growing pains. “Going from one to two locations was the hardest, I was so worried about trying to be in two places at one time. Once I realized I could actually find people that I trust to be an extension of me, it became easier. Our children work with us in the summer and a couple of them have shown interest in the family business, which is exciting. In the beginning, I was a single mom and my boys still tell me to this day how proud they are of me. That literally makes every bit of this worthwhile as my children are my whole world!” Misty exclaims.
This November marks their 10th anniversary of opening the Hillcrest Road Chicken Salad Chick location in Mobile. Knowing many entrepreneurs struggle to determine whether they should create their own business or spend the money to buy into a franchise, Misty sheds some light. “The positives of being in this franchise outweigh the negatives 10-1, if not more! CSC is different. We have local owners and we actually own all of our locations. CSC corporate is strictly there for support, recipes and advice. I love the family atmosphere of the corporation. I have the cell phone number of our founder, Stacy Brown, as well as the cell phone number of all of our executives and other owners. Every time I call they pick up. The support is amazing. I also sit on our foundation board that fights hunger and cancer as well as our marketing board. They truly listen to our ideas.”
As for being acknowledged? “When I received the email saying I won the award I didn’t believe it. I was like, what is this and why did I win? However, I soon realized it was the people that help me every
day that made this award possible. Peter and I have been married for five years, and due to the demands of the growing business, he retired from the medical device industry three years ago to become my business partner. So this award belonged to him, too. I also wanted Ali Hughes, our district manager and business partner, to be there with us. However, she selflessly decided to stay here and keep the train on the rails so Peter and I could go. We were treated like royalty and it was an incredible getaway. I could not ask for a better career or support system.”
It’s hard to imagine how the couple manages so much philanthropy, but it’s part of their core values, too. “I recently passed the Executive President gavel from the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) of Mobile, but we are still very involved through our Giving Card Program. Our CSC foundation makes donations to Cure Childhood Cancer, an organization that supports many local children fighting cancer. I am very proud to announce that Peter and I made the decision to adopt and name a pediatric room in the new wing of USA Health’s Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Mobile. Who wouldn’t want to stay in the Chicken Salad Chick room? We also sponsor Adopt a Room at RMHC as well as the Chicken Salad Chick family room at Children’s & Women’s, too.”
With locations in Mobile on Hillcrest and Old Shell Roads, and in Government Plaza, as well as in Saraland, Daphne, and Gulf Shores, Peter and Misty are focused on opening a new location in Fairhope this summer with Ali and Tori Ellis, their seasoned General Manager. With no plans of stopping, Misty sums it up saying, “God truly knew what He was doing when He put CSC in our life. When I left for college, my parents asked what I wanted to major in and I simply said ‘I want to make people happy!’ And, that’s what I am doing, one beautiful chicken salad plate at a time!”

You can’t escape it. Whether you’re out with friends or scrolling through social media, Ozempic, and fellow wonder drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro, is all anyone can talk about. They’ve taken Hollywood by storm. Everyone from actress Mindy Kaling to a plethora of reality TV stars are the topic of every suddenly skinny conversation in the stratosphere. And while all that adds up to fun-chatter, there’s a lot more to it. And most of those who’ve struggled with weight will tell you, these medications not only offer a potential solution, but they also offer hope where there wasn’t any. Putting the gossip aside, we reached out to Clare K. Carney MD, PhD, and Amy McCoy, MD, two trusted sources, for a local look into this phenomenon and the inside scoop on what promises to be a big part of the future.
By Hayley Hill Headshots Stevye Photography, StevyePhotography.com
The adored Clare K. Carney MD, PhD, recently opened a private practice, Clarity Concierge, to ensure she can care for her patients in the best possible way. A believer in the whole-body approach and that preventative measures lead to optimal health; weight loss is a big part of her platform. “Obesity is a multi-dimensional issue, so I view it from a 360-degree vantage point. I begin with a conversation and listen to a patient’s personal journey. I try to understand their relationship with
food and how this plays out in their daily life to gather clues for other causes such as stressors, medications and supplements, personality, and possible undiagnosed issues. This conversation is extremely informative. I also offer a wellness laboratory panel to help paint the internal picture in terms of kidney, liver, thyroid, and hormone function, among others. Based on the results of a patient’s history, physical, and laboratories, I create a customized plan to help guide each patient to true success,” she shares
64
In terms of success, she adds, “A patient must be in the right mindset for long-term weight loss. Like smoking cessation, many people try diets that work for a while but are not successful long- term. There are a variety of reasons for this. Perhaps they were not ready emotionally or otherwise, or the weight is a symptom of an underlying medical issue like thyroid disease or a hormone imbalance. By attacking from various viewpoints, we have the best chance of generating lasting change. I also find discussing weight loss goals to be critical. Setting realistic goals with smaller goals in between helps a patient stay focused on achieving the desired outcome.”
As a general practitioner, Dr. Carney states what most of us know. “Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease leading to heart attacks and strokes, sleep apnea, joint pain, and degeneration, especially in the hips, knees and back, as well as slower healing from surgeries. It also causes physical deconditioning as exercise tolerance declines.” But anyone unhappy with the scale knows, it’s more complicated than risk factors when it comes to change. It’s less about weight loss and more about the person you see in the mirror. It’s about finding a balance between your emotional and physical well-being and being able to be open and express your inner most insecurities so we can come up with a solution together. Without that trust, obstacles will find a way to wedge in,” she shares.
Expanding on the emotional aspect, she adds, “There are societal norms that place this crazy ideal in everyone’s head. Worrying about the bottom number will almost surely lead to failure. Focusing on the journey to becoming healthier day by day, despite our many falls is what makes us stronger and leads to long-term health and happiness. We must come to accept, respect, and love ourselves so we can succeed. While that’s very easy to say, we truly must love ourselves for all that we are, and all our potential, and accept that we have faults. Striving for a healthy weight is a goal of self-love. Loving yourself enough to desire and strive for weight loss to attain a healthier state rather than to appease your inner critic is essential. You will never please your inner critic. Believe me, I’ve tried many times and I always, always fail. We must be respectful and loving towards our shapes and celebrate that we are not all the same size and shape. That would be boring. There is a difference between being curvy and carrying weight that is causing health problems.”
As for the Ozempic frenzy? “I love this class of medications. Ozempic, a semaglutide, is in a class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists (glucagon-like-peptide -1). These were meant to combat diabetes by increasing our natural insulin secretion and decreasing our glucagon secretion. They work incredibly well for this, and for weight loss. This medication slows gastric emptying, so you feel full faster. Once the pharmaceutical companies realized how diabetics were losing weight, they set about getting approval from the FDA for weight loss. I’ve been able to help countless people get to a healthier weight. The side effects I hear about most are nausea and constipation. The nausea usually gets better as you adjust, and I find the weekly injections are better tolerated than the daily ones. Also, judicial use of an anti-emetic like Zofran can also help in the beginning. In terms of constipation, patients already prone to this need to include more fibrous foods in their diet and if it
worsens to consider MiraLAX or other over the counter methods to combat it,” she tells us.
Wondering what makes a candidate, Dr. Carney answers, “When a patient is ready to lose weight, and has tried diet and exercise, and other medications, and failed. I especially encourage this if the weight is causing medical issues like increased blood pressure, elevated blood sugars, and prediabetes. I’ve had several patients that have tried everything to no avail that have made substantial gains with semaglutide. The results were not only comparable to weight loss surgery, but they were also sustained long-term.”
In addition to Ozempic, Dr. Carney has had success with other forms of medications in the same class such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. “I absolutely prescribe this class of medications. Many are covered by insurance companies, but not all. Naturally, I offer other alternatives to semaglutide such as diet, a nutritionist, hormone help, B12, and other weight loss medications. Thankfully, the shortages have gone down greatly, the only thing in the way can be insurance coverage. Compound pharmacies do make affordable semaglutide injections for cash. This started when there were pen shortages during the pandemic. The FDA allowed compound pharmacies to make the molecule in a draw-up vial. This is still an available option,” she informs us.
Rounding out the conversation, we also caught up with the revered Amy McCoy, MD, of Coastal OBGYN. When it comes to our OBGYN’s, we often forget they care about a patient’s overall condition and offer treatments for all aspects of women’s health, including mental health. As for her specialties? “I do both obstetrics and gynecology. I specialize in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, especially in performing hysterectomies on large uteri laparoscopically as well as newer minimally invasive fibroid treatments,” she explains.
From medication and guidance, Dr. McCoy is very engaged with her patients whole-health. “In relation to my specialty, weight gain can cause anovulatory menstrual cycles, irregular periods, endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the uterine lining), and endometrial cancer. Those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), weight gain worsens the symptoms and complications of the disease. Overall, weight gain can affect every aspect of our lives and that is why I am so invested. Extra weight puts stress on our joints. A weight increase of just five pounds is about 25 pounds of additional force on our joints. It can also cause cartilage to deteriorate, muscle fatigue, and an increased risk of getting osteoarthritis. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are also issues that increase with extra weight,” she shares
For Dr. McCoy, helping patients with weight loss is multifactorial. “First, we must rule out medical diseases that can cause weight gain. We must also look at why a patient is gaining weight by asking questions like are they stress eating, do they binge eat, or travel a lot and eat fast food on the go? To help, we must know what our patient’s life is like so we can make a plan that fits their lifestyle. Then we look at what I can do to help. From setting meal goals, encouraging hydration, and medical assistance, there are multiple medical options depending on the patient’s labs, comorbidities, and lifestyle,” she tells us.
Lifestyle is one of biggest challenges in weight loss success Dr. McCoy sees. “One solution does not fit all because people
gain weight for numerous reasons, and lifestyle plays a huge role. For example, I can get so busy with clinic and surgery that I don’t get a chance to eat lunch. This leads me to eating cookies or candy because they’re the only thing available. Also, fast food is convenient and most social events center around food and alcohol. These lead to overeating high calorie foods at times you don’t normally eat. I see a lot of emotional eating, too. When we have a bad day or are stressed out, we reward ourselves with poor food choices,” she explains.
Fully aware that people who have struggled for years, even decades, are finding success with these weight loss drugs, Dr. McCoy shares, “Anytime I create a weight loss plan, GLP-1 agonists are in my toolbox. Other parts of their medical history as well as insurance coverage and BMI will play a factor in whether these are the best routes to go. Wegovy, Ozempic, Saxenda, and Mounjaro are injectable GLP-1 agonists. Rybelsus is an oral GLP-1 agonist. Essentially, they amplify a natural fullness signal between the stomach and the brain. This encourages people to stop eating sooner than they might otherwise. They’ve also been shown to affect the mechanisms involved in insulin resistance.”
Explaining each medication, she shares, “Wegovy is semaglutide that was FDA approved for weight loss in adults with a BMI greater than 27 in addition to a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity. In a 68-week study of adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem, they lost an average of 35 pounds, or 15% of their body weight. Studies also showed semaglutide was as effective as some surgical procedures and was also helpful to gastric bypass patients that had gained some weight back. Ozempic is also a name brand semaglutide, but it’s only approved for diabetes patients at this time, even though people have seen weight loss with it. Mounjaro is another option but currently only approved for diabetics. While Wegovy is approved for weight loss, the biggest challenge is getting coverage from insurance companies. The list of companies cover-
ing it is increasing but not as fast as we want it to. Interestingly, while not yet studied, I am seeing that semaglutide is decreasing the desire to drink alcohol, and the desire for smoking in some cases. Maybe they will study these side effects next! We prescribe all these medications if a patient’s medical history and insurance allow. There are also forms of compounded semaglutide that have helped with the surge in interest in this medicine.”
Vanity pounds aside, for the many looking to lose weight with the help of a semaglutide, the struggle is real. There’s simply not enough to meet demand and it is causing difficulties for those diagnosed with Diabetes. And they are cost prohibitive for many. Hopefully, the practitioners and patients that experience successful weight loss continue to be considered in the conversations evolving into what treatments look like in the future. As anyone faced with a weight issue knows, the old eat less and move more advice simply isn’t a solution for everyone.

THE WELLNESS WHISPERER
Hello,!
Being a perfectionist is exhausting and very common amongst women. If you’re constantly trying to outdo yourself, strive for nothing less than flawless, and are plagued by unrealistic standards that propel you to achieve perfection, exploring help will not only improve your ability to experience joy, but your self-worth may also depend on it.
Perfectionism is not only draining, but also more common than you think. Studies have found that perfectionism rates have been rising for years, especially among young people. Pressures to have a successful career, live a comfortable lifestyle, and meet certain beauty or behavioral standards lead to mental health struggles. Diving deep into what causes perfectionism will help you better understand yourself and treat yourself with more kindness. And when you accept that you’re a human who makes mistakes, your physical and mental health will thank you.
A silent threat, there are two types of perfectionism: adaptive perfectionism is when you have high standards, but you don’t overexert yourself to achieve them. Maladaptive perfectionism can be damaging as it creates negative beliefs, like the idea that your work is never good enough or that anything less than perfect work isn’t acceptable. You seek a certain validation that doesn’t exist, pushing yourself harder to succeed. This can lead to burnout, negative self-talk, lower mental health and well-being, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
A serious condition that can disrupt someone’s daily life, OCD is marked by obsessions, or unwanted intrusive thoughts, and physical or mental actions taken to relieve anxiety associated with the obsessions. And exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy is one of the most effective forms of treatment for OCD. Together, patients and I work to gradually reduce their anxieties and stop the problematic cycle of OCD. Through ERP, I provide patients with coping skills for when a triggering situation presents itself, allowing them to then use the skills to prevent their compulsion from taking over.
Because everyone’s life experiences — from childhood to trauma— shape who they are, it’s hard to pinpoint what causes perfectionism or OCD. But the effects of perfectionism are clear as they impact our health in a variety of ways from anxiety disorders and acute or chronic stress to depression and eating disorders. Even Increased feelings of loneliness, a developed fear of failure, difficulty keeping up relationships, the inability to live in the present, and greater impatience and frustration, may indicate an issue.
When starting ERP, obsessions will remain a challenge in the short term, but they will no longer seem overwhelming. It’s beneficial to be motivated and strive to always do your best, but not if that pursuit of your best inhibits your ability to celebrate your wins and admire your effort. Accepting that trying to be perfect isn’t realistic, can you imagine not being stressed by those dusty porch pillows, those last five pounds, or the smudged counter tops? I can!
Take care of you ,, Mama!

Carey is obsessed with accessories. Why? Their ability to elevate an outfit is immeasurable and regardless of your size and age, they always fit! As the sunny weather approaches, she’s been combing NYC and Fairhope for the season’s brightest sunglasses trends. And here she tells us that it’s go big or go home!
Fashion’s past always repeats itself, and the 60s, 70s and 80s are having their moment in the sun. Harkening back to the cult-film, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Holly Golightly’s cat eye is dealing major inspo in a supersized way. Oversized with elongated edges, I know Oliver Goldsmith, the creator of the super-chic “Manhattan” frames, would approve and fortunately, you can still get the OG version that sparked a movement at OliverGoldsmith.com.
The really oversized square and rectangular classic shapes, think vintage Sophia Loren and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, are back, too. Gucci, Fendi and Prada have set the gold standard with black or tortoise frames boasting tinted lenses. The aviator-style is currently framing Hollywood due to either the return of Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick” or the #SkiGate trial of Gwyneth Paltrow where she rocked a pair in a Utah courtroom. (We knew you were Gwynnocent!) Barton Perreira and Cartier offer great options, too.
On the local front, I caught up with our purveyor of fabulous eyewear, JJ Lamb. As the owner of Fairhope’s go-to shop, JJ Eyes Optical Boutique, we agreed as women of a certain age that the 80s style has earned its spot in 2023. Remember Ducky’s round mirrored frames from “Pretty in Pink”? Well, they’re baaacckkk. Check out JJ’s selection of the quintessential round-frame brand, Oliver Peoples. I am also obsessed with their limited-edition Gregory Peck black round frames with a tinted pink lens. JJ suggests an allwhite or -cream outfit with matching frames for the perfect summer look.
JJ believes the right pair of frames can be the crowning jewel in a curated look and that we should always pick face flattering shapes, regardless of what’s trending. “In the last 5 to 10 years, lens technology has changed quite a bit and optical health is just as important as optical fashion,” she shares. An advocate for smaller independent brands like Barton Perriera and Dita, she states” They offer a quality product with better customer service.”
With my eye on several pairs, I know they will all be big with a tortoiseshell frame and a colorful tinted lens. I’m just a believer that bigger is always better! See you soon on the Pink Carpet where my new shades will most certainly be #twinning.
XOXO
