from the EDITOR...

And just like that I found myself moving all three of my children into college. My head is still spinning and I certainly have a new found respect for the families before me that grinned and borne it — meaning the move-inday August heat. With my twins living their best life in nothing short of luxury dorms, I turned my attention to bid day for my daughter experiencing rush. To say that was an education is an understatement. As the stretchers passed by to aid those suffering possible heat stroke, I was simply amazed by the traditions and enthusiasm. As a former northerner, I keep the question as to why schools don't start in early September to myself. And while I'd never suggest change, I do wish I had saved pictures of my dorm room filled with mismatched everything to show my children. Bringing me back down to earth, creating our feature about local women in typically male dominated fields was an incredible experience. Not new to their worlds of expertise, each one was a pioneer in her own right and we couldn't be prouder to share their stories. Speaking of heat, they endured a less than cool photoshoot with joy and grit. While I may never get used to the heat, I love nothing more than telling the stories about the who, what, and where in the Bay area from my air conditioned office. Enjoy!

LIZ DAMRICH LAUNCH

Elizabeth (Liz) Damrich, creative director, designer, and local influencer, recently launched her debut collection, Elizabeth Damrich x Antonio Melani for Dillard’s. “The collection embraces my love of sculptural, architectural shapes. I have a background in interior design and a love of home, historic architecture, and how we decide to live our lives. I’m always looking to hit the balance between chic and elegant, but also having some ease built into each piece. The collection is grounded in timeless neutrals and expands into tonal shades of mint, olive, and rosewater for a coastal point of view on Fall. My hope is these pieces will become endearing companions to your wardrobe and make you feel elevated while still being very much at home within yourself,” Liz tells us.

As for her big break, Liz shares, “Dillard’s reached out on Instagram and asked if I would be interested. It sounded too good to be true and has been nothing short of a dream working with their team throughout the whole process.”

Wanting to create a collection that has longevity and appeal across a wide range of ages, Liz adds, “I’m in my 30’s but would absolutely still wear the Swan Dress (for example) when I’m in my 70’s. We’ve provided multiple ways of styling each piece as I believe clothes should have multiple lives and act as ingredients when creating your look. I want you to be able to use the Flora blouse as a layering piece over a dress this winter but also be able to layer it on top of your activewear as you’re going to yoga. Our clothes should work hard for us!”

Her favorite piece? “The kitty coat is a dream! I love the volume, draping and statement that it makes while remaining very cozy and wearable.” Regarding the proper launch event, Liz shares, “It was a balmy summer night and we toasted and celebrated the collection at our home with so many great friends. We had good wine from local Nova Espresso’s new venture, Gimme Gimme Wine, charcuterie from The Cheese Cottage, jazzy tunes from the Excelsior Band, and lots of shopping, of course! Guests were able to purchase the collection as well as Jo Malone London candles and fragrances. It was truly a dreamy night that I’ll always remember!”

Find the collection at Dillard’s stores across the country and at Dillards.com. “Each store will have a different mix of pieces based on size and climate. Luckily, the Mobile store is stocked with everything! Follow @liz_damrich for more as I will be launching a website in the next few weeks, too,” Liz concludes.

BATTLING NEW NORMS

According to the National Association of Women Business Owners, there are now over 12 million women-owned firms in the United States. Boosting the economy with a combined annual revenue of more than $1.8 trillion, trailblazing females are seeking opportunities in fields typically dominated by men. And the Bay area is no exception. From knowing our worth to seeking opportunities that would shock past generations, women now comprise nearly 60 percent of enrollment in universities and colleges, too. In a time where anything is possible, we found a few good women to share an inside look at their career paths that some of us may never have considered. They’ve dared to dream of everything from flying fighter planes to squashing the Don Draper stereotype, and these local ladies are not just surviving, they are thriving.

DELAGARZA CATHLEEN

Cathleen “Cathy” DeLaGarza’s journey is one of remarkable determination, breaking boundaries, and embracing opportunities with courage. From her early dream of becoming a fighter pilot to her current role as Chief Development Officer at Uniti Fiber, her story is an inspiring testament to the power of resilience and the pursuit of one’s passions.

Cathy’s journey began in her hometown of Austin, Texas. Inspired by her family’s legacy of military service, including her father and two older brothers who were pilots themselves, Cathy’s desire to become a pilot was deeply ingrained. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Government, she pursued her dream by joining the United States Air Force through the ROTC program.

Her determination and competence led her to become one of only 100 AFROTC graduates in 1994 to receive a pilot slot out of college. This marked the beginning of her journey to becoming a fighter pilot. “I was sent to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX., to attend Euro Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training which was a special undergraduate flying training program geared for flying fighter aircraft,” she recalls. “You had to apply separately for this program once you received a pilot’s slot. At the time, the US Congress had just repealed the combat exclusion law for women flying in fighter/ attack aircraft. This was so recent that the application I filled out still said “MALE CANDIDATES ONLY” at the top.”

During college, Cathy had the opportunity to shadow an Air Force officer at Tyndall AFB, FL. “He was an F-15C Eagle pilot. I got several rides while there and fell in love with the plane, the mission and the culture,” she tells us. “Just prior to pilot training graduation, each class meets for an ‘assignment night,’ which is where the list of aircraft that are available for follow on assignment are revealed. You pick by class rank. I was fortunate enough to be in a position to pick one of the F-15C assignments on the board.”

Cathy trained rigorously, earning her place as the first woman to come straight from college through training in her squadron. Her passion and skill culminated in her assignment to the 71st Fighter Squadron, where she became “mission ready” for combat and was deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch over Iraq at just 24 years old.

As a fighter pilot, Cathy’s days were characterized by diversity, challenges, and unrelenting excitement. Flying the F-15C Eagle, known for its air superiority mission, she had the privilege of dominating the skies and protecting fellow aircraft from enemy forces. Her role demanded perfection, pushing her both mentally and physically and instilling in her the values of tenacity and perseverance. “A fighter pilot is handed the keys to a multi-million dollar aircraft and entrusted with that responsibility,” she shares. “There is nothing else to compare this to.”

Some of Cathy’s most lasting memories from her time as a fighter pilot are often some of the most difficult moments of her career. Recalling some of those moments, Cathy shares, “I remember flying a mission over Iraq, at night, early in my career so I did not have much experience. I was so low on gas that my flight lead was contemplating having to mark the spot where I would potentially have to eject from the aircraft,” she says. “The weather was cloudy and our refueling tanker was completely lights out. I eventually was able to refuel (with a few choice words spoken in the interim) and made it back to the base. We were able to laugh about it once we were back at our tents, but that feeling of ‘do or die’ will never leave me.”

In addition to the adrenaline-pumping flights, the fighter pilot community’s camaraderie left an indelible mark on Cathy. The bonds forged through shared challenges and the necessity of trust created an unparalleled sense of unity among pilots. As part of this close-knit community, she earned her callsign “Spyce,” a symbol of her distinctiveness and her journey’s unique path.

Cathy spent 11 years as a fighter pilot, chasing and fulfilling a lifelong dream. “I believe I had a positive impact during my time in the Air Force,” Cathy says. “Most, if not all, of the pilots I flew with had never flown with a woman. I’m sure my competency, my ability to fit in and many other things were being assessed the moment I put on a flight suit. But at the end of the day, everyone just wants someone they can rely on to perform when called. The key

is having the opportunity, the rest is left to each person to put in the sweat equity required to succeed.”

After a successful career in the Air Force, Cathy embarked on a new journey, driven by her commitment to family and the desire for new challenges. She joined Southern Light, which later became Uniti Fiber, leveraging her military experience to lead the project management team. In her current role as Chief Development Officer, Cathy plays a pivotal role in enabling Uniti’s growth by strategically evaluating markets and products.

She notes the evolving landscape for women in corporate America, highlighting the increasing recognition of women’s leadership potential. “As the company has grown over the years, I have seen more women be promoted and given a seat at the proverbial table. Corporate America is just beginning to tap into the wealth of talent, skills and leadership potential that women can offer,” she proudly notes. Her experiences in the military and her current role demonstrate the value of diversity and the unique perspectives women bring to traditionally male-dominated industries.

“GIVE YOURSELF GRACE AND DON’T STRIVE FOR PERFECTION IN EVERYTHING AT EVERY MOMENT. AS I HAVE GROWN OLDER AND HOPEFULLY WISER, I STRIVE TO LIVE IN AND ENJOY THE MOMENT.”

When asked what her biggest piece of advice would be for women seeking the perfect blend of work-life balance Cathy shares this: “Give yourself grace and don’t strive for perfection in everything at every moment. As I have grown older and hopefully wiser, I strive to live in and enjoy the moment. Your kids are grown in what seems the blink of an eye. Take time to enjoy them. As for self-care, take time (even 5 minutes) to do those things that make you smile. Finally, don’t bury your feelings. Speak with your spouse, a trusted friend, or whomever can be in your circle of trust.”

Taking her own advice, Cathy loves her life on Bay with her husband, Jack, and three sons, Ryan, 22, Jackson, 18, and Joseph, 15. The DeLaGarza family loves spending time outdoors, whether hiking, kayaking, or biking. Cathy relishes her Monday yoga routine with Manja Podratz. Cathy has also served as the President of the Lower Alabama Bayhawk Lacrosse Organization for the past four years. With her youngest son Joseph having played since third grade, Cathy is dedicated to growing the game and promoting the sport of lacrosse locally. Her efforts aim to establish lacrosse as a competitive sport in high schools along the Gulf Coast.

Looking toward the future, Cathy is thrilled to watch her sons’ own career journeys. “My son Jackson is actually following in my footsteps. He has his private pilot’s license and has enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program at Samford University,” she proudly shares.

Cathy’s story epitomizes the spirit of ambition and resilience. She cherishes the experiences, the people, and the lessons learned from each phase of her life. As she continues to inspire those around her, Cathy’s legacy is one of unwavering determination and the pursuit of excellence.

In her own words, “Every win, big or little, matters.” Cathy DeLaGarza’s life is a testament to this sentiment, inspiring us all to embrace our dreams, break barriers, and reach for the skies. Dress, $398, Heels, $250; CK Collection, 251.990.9001. Earrings, $10; Apricot Lane; 251.725.0844.

MURRILL MICHELLE

Smashing stereotypes from long ago, Michelle Murrill is not only a tech guru, she’s a fearless CEO and a wife and mother, too. Finding her way and carving out her digital niche from her living room, her journey consists of the entrepreneurial details that motivate and encourage other women. Starting with small steps, she proves that owning and operating a business is truly within reach.

32

Known for her enviable energy and long locks, whether straight or curly, Michelle Murrill is one of those people that can simultaneously run an empire and a home while making everyone feel they are the center of her universe. The very definition of a self-starter, she’s not only the founder and CEO of Daphne’s Southern View Media, she’s also a business partner and wife to her high school sweetheart, Brad. Originally from New Orleans, she’s also mom to Kaitlin, 22, Maddux, 15, and Hudson, 3.

As for her start? She chose not to be intimidated by the digital world that is typically male dominated. Perhaps braver than she knows, a quick Google search indicates there aren’t many women-owned ad agencies in North America. Out of the approximately 14,000 across the continent, less than 1% are owned by women.

Taking small steps, Michelle shares, “I began running Facebook ads and exploring content marketing and SEO in 2009 when I launched Moms of Charleston from our living room. Before I knew it, I had 6 years of experience! Inspired, Brad started training in Google ads and was fully prepared when we launched our first campaign 4 years later for a local HVAC client that’s still with us today. I started recruiting both my operations director and VP of digital marketing from day one and it took less than 2 years to get them both onboard. It was just the two of us then, but now we’ve grown to 15 employees, with Leigh Wright as our Vice President and Cheri Roberts as our Operations Manager.” she proudly shares.

Offering a long list of services such as custom website design and development, logo design, branding, social media content and ad creation, management and strategy, Google ads, marketing strategies, and so much more, Michelle operates from a set of core values she’s adopted throughout her 14 years in digital marketing. “As a parent and business owner, the goal is to always strive for greatness. This means good isn’t good enough as the bare minimum doesn’t cut it and every piece of creative or marketing plan we produce must exceed expectations. I’ve always been drawn to seahorses as they’re known problem solvers and silent ninjas! An inspiration at Southern View Media, I always say, “Be a seahorse!” This means do the right thing, even when no one is looking, and be the solution to someone’s problem. It also means we are each tasked with taking care of our community, the surrounding environment, and the people in it.”

Working with businesses around the coast to ensure they don’t get left behind in this digital age, Michelle tells us, “We’re a boutique creative and digital marketing agency here to help small to medium-sized businesses understand the complex world of marketing so they can make educated decisions to grow their business.”

Many businesses, especially small brick and mortar ones, find themselves overwhelmed and secluded as the digital world turns non-stop. Their challenges range from a lack of inhouse technology experts, time for learning the ever-evolving technology, and technology not simply being user friendly enough. With a commitment to meet clients where they are, overcoming these hurdles is possible with the guidance of Michelle and her team.

Understanding that many women own local businesses, it’s refreshing to hear Michelle say, “We know what it’s like to be a small business!” From time constraints and the fear when trying to approach anything online related, she adds, “We aim to help local business owners find success through various methods such as free Google My Business listings, free quarterly training, eBooks, website payment plans, templated websites and logos, our business expos, overall guidance on starting a business, and more. It has never been more vital to have an online presence and we get our clients there!”

Sharing one simple fact, Michelle states, “Your business has to have a social media presence. Social media is not only an effective way to reach new audiences, it also

helps build brand authority. Statistics show people are more likely to trust a business with a strong social media following. Whether we develop a social media plan or a customized website or even assist with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), I’ve witnessed these tools quickly become common practice once clients see the improved earnings from their efforts. The bottom line is that none of us can afford not to be online.”

As for the female bonus? “I’ve never considered the fact that I’m a woman working in a male dominated industry to be a hindrance. Although sometimes people underestimate me and my abilities, that just makes the success I help them gain that much more fun! Women tend to be more empathetic people-pleasers and can relate to their employees better, so I’m thrilled I get to use that positive feminine energy to relate to clients and my team members. Plus, we’re fortunate to live in an area full of successful women who lift each other up. This encourages our male counterparts to continue to recognize that female business owners are credible and relevant, too,” Michelle beams.

Authentic in her approach, serving the local community is key not only to her business, but to raising a family in the Bay area, too. “I give back as much as possible. for a Cause, to the Autism Society and the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, being involved and donating always turns out to be a bigger gift to me personally and professionally,” Michelle beams.

Knowing the impact a hurricane can have on small business, Michelle created the Small Business Disaster Recovery Specialists after Hurricane Ida affected many of her Gulf Coast clients and friends. “This organization provides access to tools, assets, free marketing, free commercialsized tarps, yard signs, chainsaws, and business cards immediately after major storms. It also delivers boots on the ground help in the days after a major storm,” Michelle explains.

Leaning into assisting others, Michelle’s passion lies in helping businesses grow and become established. “If a small client’s business succeeds, we all succeed. This is accomplished not only through our paid marketing campaigns, but through our Small Business nonprofit and several other free and low-cost services. We also offer low-cost office space called Daphne Cowork which allows us to serve nonprofits and business groups with a place to meet and fundraise,” she shares.

Not only does Michelle work to ensure small businesses are able to keep up with the increasing pace of innovation, but she also never misses an entrepreneurial opportunity. Seeing a need for a full service ad speciality company on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Michelle hired Kayla Murray and branched into the world of branded promotional items that range from huggers, notebooks, hats and apparel to business cards, signage, trade show displays, and more, with sister company Pelican Promos.

With a long list of acknowledgements, Michelle was recently named Alignable’s Local Business Person of the Year on the Gulf Coast and as a 2022 Southwest Mobile County Chamber Business of the Year Nominee. Just hitting her stride, Michelle’s tight-knit team is what truly touched the Access team. Whether it’s brainstorming a path to success for an adored client or toasting to thriving through significant growth over margaritas, Michelle’s leadership style not only commands the best from her team, it also fosters respect and a positive impact that should be clickable, too.

In the heart of Mobile, where tradition meets innovation, Jamie Tapia, President of Port City Industrial, has carved her own path of success in a male-dominated industry. Jamie’s story is one of late blooming dreams, unwavering dedication, and a drive to create a thriving business that caters to the evolving needs of the industrial landscape.

Sometimes the best things in life come to those who wait, and that is exactly what happened with Jamie. Originally hailing from Mobile, Jamie married her now husband, Hays, when she was 34 years old and he was 40. Jamie traces her journey back to a pivotal moment during her maternity leave after giving birth to her first child, Augusta. It was during this pause in her career that the realization struck her - “What am I doing with my life?” Unfulfilled by her role in the international shipping business, Jamie’s ambitions began to stir, setting the stage for a transformative journey and a new career path. “Meanwhile, Hays had put in 20 years with an Alabama based industrial equipment company that was in the process of being acquired by a national conglomerate,” Jamie recalls. “There we sat, middle aged, with a high school freshman, a newborn baby, and both wanting more out of life and work. Going out on his own and creating a company had long been a dream of his.”

The couple’s aspirations aligned with the impending surge in warehouse and industrial expansion around the proposed port expansion. Recognizing the unique economic climate and future prospects, they embarked on a journey to establish Port City Industrial, a company specializing in the sales, service, and installation of warehouse equipment and supplies. “So, as I sat nursing a newborn, he and I developed a business plan that would have me handle business administration and allow Hays to sell. Our plan was be a husbandwife team with me working from home at night and during naptime while he was out in the market selling. I joke and say that everything you need to know about Hays’s ability as a salesperson can be seen in the fact that he was able to convince a new, nursing mother that she should start a business,” laughs Jamie.

Jamie took on the role of President, overseeing financial, administrative, and operational aspects of the business. Her role extended beyond the boardroom as she transitioned from a home-based business to a brick-and-mortar enterprise. This shift challenged her but also marked her ability to successfully balance her work and family life.

The early years of Port City Industrial were not without their trials. With a rapidly growing business and a growing family, Jamie and Hays found themselves burning the candle at both ends. However, their hard work paid off, leading to a doubling of business year over year. This success wasn’t just limited to the local scene; Port City Industrial’s remarkable growth earned them a spot on the Inc. 5000 List of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in America in 2023.

Amidst the challenges, Jamie found ways to thrive as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her innate abilities in empathy and intuition allowed her to build a strong company culture and foster a supportive team. “I think there was once an antiquated idea that business had to be cut throat and tough,” Jamie shares. “I think that modern leaders understand to build a strong organization and retain quality employees, the organization must focus on not only serving their customer but also serving their employees.”

Thankfully, Jamie has never felt at a disadvantage in her field solely for being a woman. Having been raised by a father who never treated her differently for being a girl, Jamie has continued to surround herself with like-minded men who see her as equal. “We do however laugh about the many times people have referred to me as Hays’s secretary or assistant,” she laughs. “We understand that our roles are not traditional and just laugh when people make assumptions.”

Jamie’s journey isn’t just about business triumphs; it’s about finding a harmonious balance between her personal and professional life. Recognizing the ever elusive “worklife balance,” Jamie emphasizes the importance of leaning into the demands of work or family when required. “I also no longer feel guilt about making things easy when they need to be,” she tells us. “I’ve also learned that I can do morel by doing less. So, I say no to things more these days. Stretching myself too thin leads to diminishing returns on time I invest.”

“I’VE ALSO LEARNED THAT I CAN DO MORE BY DOING LESS. SO, I SAY NO TO THINGS MORE THESE DAYS. STRETCHING MYSELF TOO THIN LEADS TO DIMINISHING RETURNS ON TIME I INVEST.”

Her support network has played a vital role in her journey. Jamie’s parents and inlaws have been pillars of strength, and the assistance of a dedicated nanny and personal assistant has enabled her to focus on her role as a mother and businesswoman. “I always say if I look like I have it together, it’s because I have so many people helping me in the background to keep things running smoothly.”

As Port City Industrial continues to flourish in the ever-expanding industrial landscape of Mobile, Jamie remains steadfast in her commitment to growth. She envisions a future where the company scales to meet the evolving demands of the market while fostering a fulfilling family life. With Jamie’s resilience, drive, and dedication, the best is undoubtedly ahead for Port City Industrial and the Tapia family. And when it comes to advice for women wanting to enter a career typically deemed fit for a man, Jamie has this to say, “Mobile has only felt the tip of the iceberg of what is to come in our area for industry, distribution, manufacturing and logistics. The amount of jobs that are to be created and opportunity to be realized is hard to quantify or fathom. Although women may not automatically think of careers in these fields, now is the time to seize the economic opportunity that is happening in our area. Pursuing a career in the industrial sector has never been more advantageous.”

Jamie is a Mobilian through and through and loves where she lives. She loves spending time with her husband and their children: Martin Tapia (22), Augusta Tapia (7), Sims Tapia (4), and Vivian Tapia (1), on the water at Fowl River and Dauphin Island. A book nerd at heart, Jamie can usually be found with her Kindle nearby.

In a world where women are often discouraged from entering male-dominated industries, Jamie Tapia’s story stands as a testament to the fact that breaking barriers and redefining norms is not only possible, but also essential. Her journey encourages aspiring women entrepreneurs to embrace opportunities and create their path to success, despite the challenges they may face.

FLIPPO MARY ANNE

Mary Anne Flippo stands as a testament to the power of dedication, resilience, and pursuing one’s passions. With a background that spans from being an FBI special agent to a thriving attorney at the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of General Counsel, Mary Anne’s journey is an inspiring tale of breaking barriers, finding balance, and making a lasting impact.

44

Hailing from Mobile, Alabama, Mary Anne Flippo’s journey began with humble roots, growing up in a community that instilled values of hard work and determination. As the first in her family to graduate college and achieve an advanced degree, Mary Anne’s academic achievements marked the beginning of a trajectory that would lead her to remarkable heights.

After law school, Mary Anne found herself at a crossroads – torn between a role as an Assistant District Attorney and the prospect of joining the FBI as a Special Agent. The latter option, though unexpected, intrigued her. “A lawyer friend told me the FBI was recruiting more females at that time, so I applied—never thinking they would even respond! After the interview and hiring process, the FBI called to tell me I had a start date at Quantico the same day the Birmingham District Attorney called to hire me,” she recalls. Mary Anne decided to seize the FBI opportunity, embarking on a journey that would shape her career and life in unforeseen ways.

Her six-month training at the FBI Academy was just the beginning of an exciting career. Assigned to Newark, New Jersey, Mary Anne took on a pivotal role in the Violent Crime squad, smashing through gender norms and stereotypes as the only female on her team. Despite initial doubts, she proved her mettle, participating in early morning door breaches and apprehending criminals. Her experience extended globally, as she worked on transnational organized crime, demonstrating her unyielding commitment to justice.

Her path continued to Washington, D.C., where she served on the Attorney General’s Protection Detail, guarding top officials like AG Eric Holder and AG Loretta Lynch. The experiences enriched her worldview, establishing her as a force to be reckoned with in the male-dominated world of law enforcement. “I got to travel the world, and interact with high-level government officials,” she tells us. “I also met my husband in Washington, DC. I spent 7 years with the Bureau, and this prepared me for any challenge!”

Mary Anne’s journey took another turn when she returned to Alabama to practice law, driven by a desire for a slower pace and a chance to be closer to her family while her mother battled a newly diagnosed fight with Dementia. Her time with the District Attorney’s office in Mobile and Baldwin County, where she fearlessly faced courtrooms, paved the way for her eventual transition back to the federal government in 2021, now as an attorney for the SBA. “My days involve a lot of writing, and staying on top of court deadlines! Thank goodness for Excel spreadsheets,” she jokes.

As a key player in the SBA’s Office of General Counsel, Mary Anne’s role revolves around the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) appeals cases – a final recourse for borrowers before escalating to Federal District Court. Handling cases involving fraud and bankruptcy linked to PPP and COVID EIDL loans, her expertise and meticulous approach shine through in each response she drafts. “It is a great feeling after drafting a response to obtain a favorable decision from the Administrative Law Judge. This appeals process is the Borrower’s final step before taking the case to Federal District Court.”

In her pursuit of justice and excellence, Mary Anne has faced the trials of being a woman in male-dominated spheres. “I had to convince my Boss in New Jersey that I was capable of being on the violent crime squad,” she recalls. “He said there are no females on that squad, and suggested I should stick with white collar work since I was

an attorney. I had to convince him that I could handle that squad, and the challenge. He reluctantly agreed to assign me to violent crimes. In one of my reviews, I’ll never forget that my supervisor said I was like a duck to water with my team.”

Another instance in which Mary Anne felt the affects of gender bias was during her first years as a prosecutor. “I was so thankful for Ashley Rich, who was DA at the time, for giving me the opportunity. As well as DA Bob Wilters in Baldwin County who has been a tremendous mentor for me,” she says. “I learned so much, and there is no better feeling than when a jury comes back with a guilty verdict. There was one instance that the opposing male counsel in a trial, told me he couldn’t wait until our trial because he was going to win. I told him in the elevator to get ready to lose—which he did!”

Balancing her professional life with personal responsibilities, Mary Anne emphasizes the importance of a strong support network. Her husband’s unwavering support, particularly in the face of her mother’s dementia, has been a pillar of strength. “I’m so thankful for bosses that have understood this difficulty. I’m right down the street from my Mom’s nursing home, so being at home allows me to Suit

“I LEARNED SO MUCH, AND THERE IS NO BETTER FEELING THAN WHEN A JURY COMES BACK WITH A GUILTY VERDICT.”

be with her frequently. This year she has really declined, and I couldn’t have made it through the sadness without my husband,” she fondly shares. “He will go with me to visit, and always makes my Mom laugh. Having that support system is amazing.” Additionally, her connection to the Fairhope yoga community and her role as a yoga teacher provide her with additional sources of solace and camaraderie.

Looking ahead, Mary Anne is excited about her future endeavors. She hopes to one day be back in the courtroom. Her dedication to gender equality and the empowerment of women shines brightly, as she aspires to add more female voices to the county’s legal landscape.

Mary Anne loves her life in Baldwin County after living the fastpaced life of New York and DC. “I love going into a restaurant and running into someone I know. That never happened in the northeast!” Mary Anne, along with her husband and two stepsons, love traveling together. They love visiting 30A, though Mary Anne will always vote for a trip to New York! Mary Anne also loves spending her time volunteering as a therapeutic horseback-riding instructor at DreamCatcher Farms in Silverhill, where she uses her experience growing up riding hunter/jumpers to serve children and young adults on the Autistic Spectrum, with Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, ADHD, Spina Bifida, and emotional issues like anxiety and coping skills.

Mary Anne’s journey is a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all that adversity can be transformed into opportunity, and that the path to success is often forged through the courage to challenge norms and the determination to make a difference. As Baldwin County continues to thrive under the influence of remarkable women like Mary Anne Flippo, her story serves as a reminder that every individual has the power to shape their destiny and leave an indelible mark on their community.

SUN SAFETY & SKIN HEALTH

IN THE BAY AREA

Living in the Bay Area certainly has its perks, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant lifestyle. However, this picturesque setting comes with a price – intense sun exposure. The sun’s rays are not only more damaging today but are also a leading cause of skin cancer, a deadly condition that affects millions of Americans. We sat down with renowned Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kimberly Donnellan MD, from USA Health, to discuss the significance of sun protection, skin cancer types, prevention, and the surprising truths about skin health.

56

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Perhaps even more chilling, more than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour, and having had 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma, the most aggressive skin cancer. Living in the Bay Area and spending the majority of our summers baking in the intense sun, these statistics are very alarming.

According to Dr. Donnellan, there are four primary types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and the most aggressive one, melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are often caused by sun damage and account for the majority of skin cancer cases. While basal cell carcinoma is slow-growing, squamous cell carcinoma can spread to other parts of the body. Merkel cell carcinoma is rare but aggressive, with its incidence growing in the U.S. Lastly, melanoma, though accounting for only 1% of skin cancers, can rapidly spread if not detected and treated early.

As climate change and global warming progress, the sun’s rays become more potent and damaging. Ozone depletion contributes to this increase in UV radiation, leading to an estimated 300,000 non-melanoma and 4,500 melanoma skin cancer cases for every 10% decrease

in ozone levels. “Rates have risen rapidly over the past thirty years as we saw a doubling between 1982 to 2011. A slight decline was seen in the younger age groups possibly due to an awareness of the dangers of sun exposure.”

Dr. Donnellan emphasizes the importance of yearly professional skin checks. These screenings involve tracking abnormalities over time and biopsies of suspicious skin lesions. If moles change in color, size, itch, or bleed, immediate analysis is advised. Early detection is crucial for avoiding disfiguring surgeries. Despite awareness campaigns, Dr. Donnellan finds it astonishing that tanning beds are still in use. “Those who use tanning beds before the age of 35 increase their risk of melanoma by 75% with over 400,000 cases of skin cancer directly linked to indoor tanning,” she warns. More people develop skin cancer from tanning beds than people develop lung cancer from smoking!

Dr. Donnellan emphasizes that most skin cancers result from sun exposure decades earlier. Taking steps to protect your skin now can influence your future appearance and skin cancer risk. Wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure are crucial. And she warns us to be vigilant when it comes to checking your skin for possible abnormalities. “Some of the more aggressive cancers can grow to a considerable size in a matter of weeks. For this reason, if you notice an unusual spot, make an appointment and have a biopsy done if indicated,” she says.

58
“SOME OF THE MORE AGGRESSIVE CANCERS CAN GROW TO A CONSIDERABLE SIZE IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. FOR THIS REASON, IF YOU NOTICE AN UNUSUAL SPOT, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND HAVE A BIOPSY DONE IF INDICATED.”

Leading by example, Dr. Donnellan advocates for comprehensive sun protection strategies. Whether on the beach or the tennis court, she emphasizes using sunscreen, wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade whenever possible. “It is so important to apply and reapply sunscreen when participating in swimming or activities where you tend to sweat!” And when it comes to reversing the appearance of sun damage, Dr. Donnellan highlights the effectiveness of CO2 laser treatments. This treatment not only corrects hyperpigmentation but also stimulates collagen production, reducing wrinkles and promoting healthier skin.

In a world where sunny rays can have dire consequences, it’s imperative to prioritize skin health. Dr. Kimberly Donnellan MD’s insights shed light on the dangers of sun exposure, the importance of skin checks, and the power of protective measures. As we navigate the changing landscape of our environment, let’s remember that safeguarding our skin today is an investment in our

and future well-being.

PROOF POSITIVE

As the ease of lazy summer days fade into the hustle and bustle of the fall and holiday madness, this can easily be a recipe for a mental health disaster. Add the pressure of Instagram perfection or the paralysis from the cost of college, it can be too much for most anyone. Not out of the pandemic woods yet, we are still very much in what we’ve come to know as the mental health crisis. And yet, there’s so much negativity in regards to the field of psychology and getting help. When asked what he wishes more people understood about the field, Jack Carney, Ph.D., is eager to share! A Jack of all mental health trades, his insight is not only fascinating, it’s invaluable.

As a licensed psychologist who provides psychological evaluations and consultations, Jack has seen and heard it all. Always up for a chat, we recently discussed the science of psychology. And when questioned if it is indeed a science, Jack responded, “I am so glad you asked this question as I am here to say that psychology is absolutely a science! While we all know there are those who argue it isn’t, nothing could be further from the truth. First of all, think of empirical observation where we actually watch and measure things happening. In psychology, we don’t sit around sipping tea and pondering why people do what they do. No, we roll up our sleeves and get data — just like any other science,” he enthusiastically explains.

As the founder of Mobile’s Clarity Health, he provides all sorts of testing, including aptitude testing. A particularly important consider-

ation if you’re contemplating whether or not college is the right fit for your child or if you or anyone you care about is considering switching careers for example. Used to measure an individual’s natural strengths, aptitude tests look at an individual’s inherent skills, and their ability to apply them in new situations. All scientifically designed around principles of psychology, they simply offer an objective and reliable way of assessing one’s core strengths.

A special arena for Jack, he shares, “Clinical psychology testing and assessment is where the rubber meets the road. It’s the laboratory where the scientific principles of psychology meet real-life applications. Imagine we’re on a treasure hunt. Each person is a complex labyrinth with a unique combination of intelligence, personality, achievements, and challenges. And as a clinical psychologist, it’s my job to decipher the map.”

60

More specifically, Jack likes to have client’s engage in computer based performance testing to see how quick they are, what they can remember, and even measure how they respond to questions or prompts. Further explaining, Jack shares, “From there, this data is compared to a normative sample. Then there’s hypothesis testing - not the kind where you guess who ate the last slice of pizza. We look at relationships between variables. Then we set about testing these hypotheses, running rigorous experiments. There is some detective work but it is grounded in statistics.”

And of course, let’s not forget replicability. “In psychology, just like in cooking, it’s important to make sure your results aren’t a one-time wonder. Can you imagine if we only had one successful gumbo, and every subsequent attempt fell flat? That’s why our studies should be repeatable by others, to ensure our findings are as reliable as grandma’s secret recipe,” Jack tells us.

So, therefore in this data driven world — psychology is clearly no exception. “It reminds me of my math classes in data analysis. Yes, psychology embraces the world of statistics to interpret the data we collect. If we think of our data as a jigsaw puzzle, statistical analysis helps us fit the pieces together to form a clear picture. You might be wondering what happens once we’ve collected all our data and analyzed it? Well, we don’t just stick it in a drawer and forget about it. We publish it, usually in scholarly journals, but not before it goes through the gauntlet of peer review. This is where our fellow psychologists scrutinize our work — a process about as comfortable as walking on hot coals, but it ensures that our work is up to the highest scientific standards,” says Jack.

When talking about intelligence testing, Jack likes to think of it as a GPS System, sharing, “These assessments help us understand a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, their problem-solving abilities, and, most importantly, their potential. For example, I might want to know if a patient is a verbal whiz or if they excel in spatial reasoning because the difference is like asking,”Should we take the highway or the scenic route?”

“IN PSYCHOLOGY, JUST LIKE IN COOKING, IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE YOUR RESULTS AREN’T A ONE-TIME WONDER. CAN YOU IMAGINE IF WE ONLY HAD ONE SUCCESSFUL GUMBO, AND EVERY SUBSEQUENT ATTEMPT FELL FLAT? THAT’S WHY OUR STUDIES SHOULD BE REPEATABLE BY OTHERS, TO ENSURE OUR FINDINGS ARE AS RELIABLE AS GRANDMA’S SECRET RECIPE,”

Gaining even more respect for the field, there’s also achievement tests. “These are like milestones on the journey, showing us how far the person has come in certain areas such as reading, writing, or math skills. These provide answers as to how well our adventurer is handling the challenges along the way, what they have learned, and how they are using their knowledge. And of course, we can’t forget personality tests. These give us insight into a person’s character traits, behaviors, and emotional patterns. It’s like getting to know the quirks and habits of our fellow travelers, and figuring out how they might react to different situations on our treasure hunt.”

While it seems like a lot to garner from a few tests, you may be curious as to how it helps improve an individual’s situation in life. Jack has the answer. “Once we’ve gathered all this information, we can develop a tailored roadmap for our adventurous individual. For example, if the intelligence test indicates a person is struggling with problem-solving skills, we can work on strategies to manage that. If the achievement test shows they’re acing reading but lagging in math, we can focus on boosting their math skills. And if the personality test reveals they tend to get stressed easily, we can work on coping mechanisms to manage stress better.”

For Jack, clinical psychology testing and assessment isn’t just about putting labels on people or fitting them into boxes. “No! It’s about understanding each person as a unique individual, with their own set of strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. And once we’ve got that understanding, we can help them navigate their labyrinth, overcome their challenges, and find their own personal treasure. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing someone flourish as they journey through their life maze and towards their goals,” Jack beams.

So while this all may seem a bit overwhelming, Jack’s years of continuous education point to the fact that psychology is indeed a science. And it’s one that we may all need a little help navigating. With not only the mental health stigmas alive and kicking, they also exist in terms of the methods used to help people. But as parents, caregivers to loved ones, and self-help seekers, assistance to guide us through tough decisions and circumstances is out there. Knowledge certainly is power. Meeting people like Jack who are so committed to helping others is healing in itself and we think it’s safe to say that he certainly blinded us with science.

THE WELLNESS WHISPERER

Hello,!

Comparing yourself to others is a self-destructive and ingrained habit. As women, we can’t help ourselves; we see a slim, stylish, beautiful woman and our negative inner voice quickly screams out our own imperfections. From there, we automatically feel “less” than we did just a moment ago. When you stop to consider the fact that we are inviting in more of this negative self-talk through our devices, it’s something to consider!

Closely tied to the 40 million Americans suffering from high levels of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and depression, you’re not alone if you participate in what’s now being called ‘Comparison Culture’. When we compare our appearance, paycheck, home appliances, hand bags, relationships, social gatherings, and you name it, we are actually rating our own worth as an individual.

The big lie we forget is that we always compare our worst to someone’s best. We make puffed-up assumptions about someone’s lifestyle, abilities, and happiness, while shortchanging our own strengths and emphasizing our general dissatisfaction in life. The cost? We feel inferior and diminish our own confidence, optimism, and motivation.

Research states that a whopping 88 percent of women compare themselves to images in the media. So what does this mean? It means we need to treat ourselves better and find ways to reduce the number and impact of the comparisons we make against ourselves.

For starters, it’s important to think critically about the content you expose yourself to, especially on social media. Stop and think about the motivation behind each post and question how realistic each image is. Suggestions include unfollowing people that post highly edited images of themselves or even detox from social media completely.

And while avoiding harmful images can help, if you, or someone you love, is facing serious self-esteem or body image issues, it’s time to get the help you deserve. It’s my goal as a professional to teach individuals about the mind-body connection through both talk therapy and the practice of yoga. Finding balance ensures each patient attains a state of mental health in which their overall well-being is a priority. And since perfection is almost never achievable, happiness and peace of mind are through these proven methods.

Just remember, you are unique and not supposed to be like anyone else in this world. You’re also worth protecting and deserve a kind inner voice.

Take care of you , Mama!

CHEAT SHEET TO REPEAT

On Comparing myself to others:

• Fuels my insecurities and low self-esteem issues.

• Damages my spirit, deprives me of joy and discourages me.

• Impairs my talents, creativity and abilities.

• Creates unrealistic expectations of me, and of my friends, loved ones and co-workers.

• Spawns my criticisms, jealousy and resentment.

If ever there was a recipe for discontent and unhappiness — it’s comparing yourself to others. And apparently, ‘Comparison Culture’ is a real thing among women of all ages. Kicking our self-esteem to the proverbial curb at an alarming rate, Sydney Wasdin M.Ed., LPC, NCC, RYT, of True Yoga + Therapy sets us straight.

COCKTAIL KING

Everyone knows the saying “Work hard, play hard,” and downtown Mobile’s popular watering hole took it a step further by adding on “POST Harder!” And with that in mind and the happy hour menu to prove it, Matt LeMond gives us the lowdown on what’s happening at his various establishments this month as well as a few shoutouts to those that keep his joints jumping!

Greetings!

Taking a leap of faith, my team and I decided to expand by adding a POST Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar in the heart of Spring Hill. While it wasn’t necessarily a hard decision, it certainly required considering the current challenges anyone in the food and beverage industry is facing. From workforce challenges and the ongoing supply chain disruptions to ensuring quality and the changing marketplace, this industry is complex to say the least!

And when it comes to growth, I see opportunity everywhere and yet I know that no single organization can tackle all the challenges, especially without good help. For starters, Tyler Sayers knocks everything out of the park. As the manager of POST, both downtown and in Spring Hill, our clients love every cocktail and event he creates.

While many may assume creating, pouring and delivering a drink is simple, I promise you it’s not. From sourcing ingredients to training the staff, it’s complicated yet we love it! True to form, Tyler and the team always change things up and this month we’d love to see you on Martini Monday for an $8 lemon drop, pomegranate, chocolate, or expresso variety. If Monday isn’t ideal, pop in to either POST on Tannin Tuesday for discounts on bottles and boards or on Whiskey Wednesday for special deals. More? Join us on Thankful Thursday where we offer 15% off cocktails for first responders, healthcare providers, and teachers. Naturally, our Happy Hour includes half off on wine, beer, well liquor, and POST Toast.

Knowing many of you will join us at the Outsider, our lively sports lounge, be sure to look for Lindsey Meyers. She makes everything fun, and lucky for us, we get to work with her. Consistently enthusiastic, Lindsey’s positivity, sincerity, and ability to make everyone smile comes natural to her. Her genuine attitude is infectious as it boosts everyone’s mood that’s around her. The Outsider wouldn’t be the same without her and whether you “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle,” you won’t be disappointed and neither will I as I know I can count on her. So, from our village to yours, it’s an honor to serve as part of the Bay area’s unique fabric.

Cheers!

Making Your Money MATTER

hot Alabama summer day, his expert tips are as welcome as a cool breeze.

My phone has been ringing non-stop with questions from clients regarding inflation. Naturally, financial planning is meant to address these issues and I do have a few traditional options that help most get more bang for their buck. From Money Market Accounts (MMA’s) and CD’s to Short-Term Treasuries and Structured Notes, these are relatively simple to understand.

A MMA is a type of deposit account offered by banks and credit unions. Insured up to $250,000 by the FDIC, MMA’s are a pretty safe option for your cash as they earn more interest than a traditional savings account. While they can require a larger minimum balance, MMA’s don’t typically have a maturity date. This comes in handy if you want an account that earns interest with easy access to your cash. Most have transaction limitations, so check into those with your financial institution. I do have certain MMA funds that don’t have such restrictions.

MMA’s can be beneficial in the sale of a big ticket item like a home when the seller usually has to pay taxes on the profits. By estimating the capital gains taxes and putting that amount in an MMA to earn interest, you can pay the IRS and have earned a bit, too.

A certificate of deposit (CD) is a low-risk savings tool that can boost the amount you earn in interest while keeping your money invested in a relatively safe way. FDIC insured CDs do have time terms. And since interest rates may change during your CD’s term, you may miss out on earning those higher rates. However, if rates go down, you benefit by earning the higher rate that was offered when you opened the CD. Buying multiple CDs of varying term lengths can help address this concern while still giving you access to some of your money each year.

Treasury bills, or T-bills are government-backed securities that can be appealing because you’re not required to tie up your money for a long period of time. Some have a maturity period of just a few days, but they are typically issued in terms of 4, 13, 26 or 52 weeks. Assigned a specific face value, the amount you pay is called the “discount rate” and once mature, the government pays you the full amount of the bill.

Lastly, structured notes combine a bond with a derivative component that offers the possibility of full or partial return of principal at maturity, regardless of how the underlying assets perform. While structured notes have the potential for higher returns, they also have unique risks, and their terms and features can be significantly different and more complex.

Naturally this overview provides insight to read into the various ways I can help clients maximize their money, the important takeaway is that there are ways to make your money work for you and lessen the painful impact of inflation and high interest rates. Lastly, there are plenty of opportunities to be had during these challenging financial times and I’m here to discuss your options.

Until next time, Justin Law

pink table talk

Was it my imagination or did the temperature just drop a few degrees? Either way, September is here and I am running, not walking, to nab fall’s hottest wardrobe staple — the comfortable, versatile, and timeless loafer with contemporary upgrades. It’s time to get in step!

The elegant simplicity of the loafer, combined with its practical appeal makes it the ideal choice for both work and play. It can be worn with everything from jeans and shorts to suits and dresses. You’ll find them reimagined in a variety of materials and colors with new details offering a perfect blend of classic meets modern.

This fundamental prepster shoe was touted in “The Original Preppy Handbook” and its humble beginnings were inspired by the Norwegian farmer’s slip-on shoe. They showed up in Europe on well-heeled travelers in the 1930s and became all the rage with the upper class. In 1935 they were spotted by an affiliate of Esquire Magazine on a jet setter in Palm Beach, and by 1936, a partnership with the G.H. Bass Company was formed to manufacture the soon to be dubbed Weejun loafer. This new shoe featured a distinctive strip of leather across the vamp and a half moon shaped slot where a penny would later find itself stored for emergency phone calls.

Excited for fall, our adored Southern influencer, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, shares her latest must-have obsession that has us on our feet cheering with enthusiasm. At last, a stylish staple available at every price point that’s cool and comfortable. In a world where there’s so many trends, yet so little time, her edits have us ready to loaf around and feel good about it, too.

The loafer gained notoriety in the 1950s among east coast ivy leaguers as the young crowd was clamoring for a more casual vibe than their parents wore. Due to its affordability and comfort, the shoe became a staple from Hyannis Port to Berkeley, and every highschool dance in between — even paired with poodle skirts. In 1953, the Italians took the loafer from the plebeian brown to a sleek black option with luxe hardware. They not only elevated the loafer, but also the famed House of Gucci.

During the 1960s, fashion icons like Jaqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn incorporated them into their wardrobes further cementing their place in fashion history. With the combination of simplicity and sophistication, the loafer is reclaiming its place on the style podium this fall. The duality is exactly what the modern fashion set craves – versatility with an edge.

The pink carpet will undoubtedly be trodden on by this of the moment shoe — as well as the walkways of Mobile Bay and the polished floors of the Country Club of Mobile. Prada’s classic version is already burning a hole in my Bergdorf Goodman cart!
