FIGHTING BREAST CANCER SMARTER. Dr. Ayesha Munir, a medical oncologist,
recently joined the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, focusing her expertise on breast cancer. She has been nationally recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the world’s leading professional organization for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer, for her work in fertility preservation of breast cancer patients, and she has been published in clinical journals. Many cancer treatment regimens, such as chemotherapy, can damage ovarian function and lead to infertility. Because many young women with breast cancer may desire to become pregnant, Dr. Munir’s expertise provides hope to reproductive-age breast cancer patients in South Alabama. She discusses fertility preservation with her patients at the time of diagnosis and before beginning treatment. “Ideally, all women of reproductive age with newly diagnosed breast cancer who have fertility concerns should meet with a reproductive endocrinologist,” said Dr. Munir. “Early referral for fertility preservation counseling and assisted reproductive technology can significantly impact the quality of life for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.” Dr. Munir is also working to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients from different racial backgrounds. Triple-negative breast cancer, the most aggressive type, affects one in five Black women and poses a greater risk of spreading and returning. Since it does not respond to standard therapy options, is extremely challenging to treat, and leads to higher mortality rates in Black women compared to other groups, Dr. Munir is dedicated to educating highrisk populations and researching better methods for assessing, preventing, detecting and treating this form of breast cancer. Using cutting-edge clinical research to boost cancer-related treatment outcomes, Dr. Munir is leading the fight against breast cancer.

iving in a community that has such a deep and rich history, most of us have all the feels for the various traditions and customs that almost define us. Ranging from Mardi Gras to the holiday season in general, we love nothing more than celebrating in the time-tested style we all know and love. For me, this conjures up visions of a cozy home brimming with memorymaking opportunities and family-focused everything. And, the movement of art and antique collecting amongst the millenial's puts the proof in the pudding. A true return to elegance is whispering through our old oak trees and everything old is new again. Offering a refreshing take, interior designer Cindy Meador gives us a tour of an extraordinary traditional home and Greg Riley of Yellow House Antiques & Interiors shares his fine-tuned insight to help guide those of us not sure how to start building a collection of the finer things. Additionally, Shelby St. John Norton graciously took us to her beloved barn where we spent the day absorbing and witnessing how much joy can be found when we pursue interests that bring us pleasure. Being surrounded by some of the prettiest land around, as well as all the gems like bits and bridles that are found in such a pristine establishment, we certainly got the bug for the timeless classic fashions that stem from the riding ring and beyond. Grateful that at last what many southerners have long held sacred has captured the attention of design enthusiasts near and far, I hope this issue will ignite fond memories of your own traditions and an appreciation for all your timeless treasures, too. Enjoy!

From her childhood days spent on Fowl River to her successful career in physical therapy, Shelby St. John Norton’s deep connection with horses and her unwavering commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the environment has been the driving force behind many decisions in her life. Shelby’s life is a captivating blend of cherished childhood memories, a passionate love for horses, and the exciting reality of breaking ground on a dream family home on Mobile Bay.

fter graduating from UMS-Wright, Shelby St. John Norton, a Mobile native, fondly remembers her childhood filled with unforgettable experiences. Alongside her brothers, she spent weekends on Fowl River, crafting forts, navigating boats and four-wheelers, skiing, swimming, and fishing. Notably, she had a pet wood duck named “Web” who was her swimming companion. It was during these idyllic days that her love for horses began to flourish. In high school, her horse resided at a nearby boarding facility, motivating her to frequent the river often. However, her life’s path led her away from Mobile for a while. Shelby pursued a degree in entomology at the University of Georgia and later earned a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of South Alabama. Her career led her to work at a neurological rehabilitation hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, for four years, where she achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest ever, at that time, to obtain her Hippotherapy specialty certification, HPCS, involving physical therapy treatments using horses as dynamic surfaces. “It was a fantastic experience,” Shelby recalls of her time in Lexington. “I learned a great deal and felt like I really made a difference.” Shelby’s life took a serendipitous turn when she met her husband, Taylor Norton, an outdoors enthusiast raised in Loxley. The magic happened on social media, despite having mutual friends from their childhood. They finally crossed paths at the age of 30, drawn together through a mutual acquaintance’s wedding. “We were both asked via Facebook for our addresses for my cousin’s wedding (back when there was a Facebook wall you had to write on) and he was drawn to a picture of me quail hunting—mostly he was drawn to the dog in the picture,” she laughs. A Trombone Shorty concert served as the backdrop for their first date, and the rest, as they say, is history. Approaching their ninth year of marriage, the couple now celebrates their love with their three beloved children: Joseph, Chapman, and Shepard.

As a busy mother, Shelby’s days are a blend of motherly responsibilities and a deep passion for cooking wholesome, nutritious meals for her family. Her own health journey has inspired this culinary commitment. Beyond that, she enjoys tending to their animals, engaging in tennis matches, strolling along the bay’s shores, and maintaining an active lifestyle. With their two eldest children involved in sports and jujitsu, the Norton family is always on the move during the school year. But no matter how busy life gets, she always finds time for her true passion: riding horses. Shelby and Taylor Norton have recently embarked on an exhilarating journey to build their dream home by the bay. Their love for the outdoors, bay, and the delta region led them to explore bayfront property. While the challenges of building a home are known, the Nortons are thrilled about the process. “I was a little hesitant about the work involved in building, but we are very excited and the process has been fun,” Shelby tells us. “My dad is an engineer and he and my mom have great experience with new construction. They have been instrumental in the process from plans to framing, and my mother is helping with the interior design as well.” Truly a family affair, their new home will be a haven for the family, nurturing their love for the environment and instilling the importance of environmental stewardship. When it comes to their home’s aesthetic, Shelby’s style can best be described as “rustic elegant.” She treasures a clean, uncluttered look, using furniture and art to infuse color. Antique animal oil paintings, some acquired from collector Patricia Hall, adorn their dining room and will soon find a place in the foyer of their new house. “My favorite painting is one of a fox hunt!” Throughout the rest of the house, modern pieces will harmonize with antique furniture, and family heirlooms such as her grandmother’s corner cabinet and antique beds for her daughter will continue to add warmth and character. “I am very sentimental so I love using family heirlooms in my home,” Shelby says.

Based in Fairhope and a southern-to-the-core NYC transplant, Patricia Hall is a long-time private antique dealer and shares, “I’ve noticed younger people are showing a heightened interest in antique art, furnishings and accessories. Shelby has exquisite taste and purchased an antique English fox hunt painting and has since purchased other pieces from me to add to her collection. It’s wonderful that so many millennials are turning to traditional pieces that compliment Ikea, Pottery Barn and Paris flea market treasures. There is something to be said for elegance, durability, and tradition. It can be fresh and timeless all at once. I tell young folks to ‘just go for it’ and throw that contemporary painting right over the Georgian chest of drawers or to hang their children’s framed watercolors over a period sideboard. Old and new, not a bad metaphor!” With the holiday season approaching, the Norton family’s cherished traditions come to life. They alternate between celebrating Christmas with Shelby’s parents and Taylor’s parents in Loxley. On Christmas Eve, the family enjoys a small celebration with just their immediate family featuring a prime rib roast and elegant table settings with China, crystal, and silver—an annual tradition that brings joy and togetherness. The Norton family’s bond grows stronger through shared outdoor adventures. They all have a love for riding horses, fishing, swimming, skiing, and tubing. The children actively engage in duck and dove hunting, and their youngest has embraced kayaking. Whether they are exploring the woods, sailing, riding, on their boat, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, they cherish being together. Their vacations often include snow skiing trips out west and local beach getaways, as their children are always eager for new adventures. Shelby’s lifelong passion for horses has been a defining element of her life. She has always been drawn to these majestic animals. Whether it was drawing pictures for her first-grade teacher or leasing a pony, she found ways to be near them. “Horse people often say your love for horses ‘is in your blood.’ My great grandfather was a horse trader, so maybe that is where my love came from,” says Shelby.

“I didn’t own my own horse until I was 16, but somehow I’ve always found a way to be with them. I followed hoof prints once when I was 8 or so that led to the horse’s owner’s house— which resulted in a relationship lasting through college. She shared her horses with me through most of my childhood. I used to take her horses swimming in Fowl River.” Although she lost her dream horse to colic four years ago, her love for riding and caring for horses has not wavered, thanks to the support of friends and generous farm owners like Wendy Womble. “The Wombles and their farm have been such a blessing to me at this point in my life with young children. It has allowed me the opportunity to experience my love for horses without owning one and having the stresses that come with horse ownership,” she gratefully shares. “Curzon is a wonderful horse and I have enjoyed him so much. He has taught me a great deal as he’s an old Dressage pro. I like to think the relationship is mutually beneficial— he pretends to be angry about work at times, but he truly loves his job.” Shelby’s personal style beautifully reflects her love for horses and the equestrian lifestyle. She effortlessly combines functionality and style, often seen in her riding clothes, tall boots, hats, and equestrian-themed clothing. “I typically feel good wearing my riding clothes and can be seen in the grocery store and school pick up in them often. I feel like they are functional and stylish,” she shares. Yet, comfort remains a priority—even though going shoeless is not always socially acceptable! As Shelby and her family embark on this new chapter in their bayfront dream home, they aspire to create a space where friends and family can gather, immerse themselves in the bay’s beauty, and discover peace in nature. They aim to instill in their children a profound love and respect for the environment, cultivating a sense of responsibility as stewards of the land. Above all, they hope their home becomes a cherished place for their loved ones to return to for many years to come, brimming with laughter, adventure, and love.

From the heirloom china and antique furnishings, the tried and true aesthetic is one many crave and cherish. And as we shift into the holiday mode, most of us become a bit more sentimental and yearn for all things traditional. Looking for a nod to yesteryear ourselves, we caught up with interior designer Cindy Meador to uncover what it’s all about. From a nursery that speaks to our wombs to a dining room wallpaper that has us considering hosting the holidays, her approach to traditional design has us swooning. By Hayley Hill Photos Chris Luker, LukerPhotography.com
G
etting to know Cindy Meador has been a fascinating journey. An absolute creative force, learning about the range of her design projects has been awe inspiring. From her vast knowledge of decade-defining styles and the top-notch resources she uses to achieve perfection to her ability to manage large projects and a multi-member team, it’s overwhelming and exciting. And since most of us enjoy dipping our toes into the DIY design world, we decided to follow Cindy on a journey that highlights her abilities in the traditional design realm. Known for her contemporary masterpieces, we wanted to see a traditional example so she introduced us to a home in Lake Charles, Louisiana. With key phrases like “Southern Living look” and “beautiful soothing colors,” our interest was piqued! “The clients hired me to decorate their Perdido Key condominium and that evolved into a wonderful and longlasting friendship and working relationship that included several other projects. With trust established, I was brought on during the early planning stages to work closely with Stutes Construction, the builder, to create their new family home. The scope of the work was top to bottom to deliver a turnkey home that included everything like flooring, countertops, exterior details, hardware, ceiling designs, millwork design, and more! Wanting it to be comfortable and very traditional, my team and I were truly involved in every aspect of this home,” Cindy shares. As for her traditional aesthetic? “It has been cultivated throughout my years as a designer and includes many adaptations. Depending on each client’s wishes, I can go all in or even semi-traditional. With the ability to customize, some clients prefer a “New Traditionalist” approach which is a cleaner version of what most visualize. For me, it’s a timeless style that incorporates classic art, antiques, and pieces with history as well as fresh and crisp items that breathe a bit of new life into the overall look,” Cindy explains.

While traditional design typically centers around rich colors, floral patterns, and lots of details, stuffy does not have to be in the cards — even if you have beloved family pieces or a plethora of brown furniture. In agreement, Cindy adds, “Although I have several gorgeous all-neutral projects under way, I love to introduce and work with color when appropriate. Interestingly most of my traditional clients want to incorporate it into their homes to a certain degree. For example, the dining room wallpaper in this home really grounded the huge wall in the space. And while traditional, it brings light and cheer into the home. I absolutely love hand painted mural wallpapers, especially Chinoiserie,” Cindy beams.
42
Regarding the key elements that act as the home’s foundation, Cindy shares, “This home has reclaimed locally sourced beams and 9” wide antique heart pine floors that create a warm and welcoming vibe. They also serve as the perfect backdrop for the streamlined silhouettes found in the furnishings, upholstery, trim details, and classic light fixtures.” In addition to the cool and classic hues and subtle patterns throughout the home, we flipped for the fairytale inspired nursery. “This is a wonderful time in our clients lives and since there will be more babies, we decided to go neutral with a nod to the nostalgic. From the adored Humpty Dumpty and other classic nursery rhyme characters, it will serve them well for future generations,” Cindy explains.
With very happy clients, Cindy recalls her favorite moment. “The install week was so much fun! We stayed in the home with the clients, it was like Christmas and it’s now a tradition for us to stay when we visit for a refresher. We faced many weather disasters and delays during this project but the long wait was worth it. Mary Beth Bradley, one of my designers, helped me with every selection during the entire process as she has a great sense of classic style. I always pair up with her on traditional new construction and renovation projects as well as any work we do for this client. It certainly takes a village to run a large and smooth project,” Cindy shares. Living in Fairhope and with her shop and design business based in Orange Beach, Cindy travels great distances to serve her clientele. Naturally we inquire about being labeled a contemporary designer. “I have such a broad sense of design styles and I love so many periods of furniture and fabrics. The one thing my portfolio portrays is diversity. While you may not see your exact style, it definitely shows my attention to detail and my range. I guess it shows all my design personalities!” she jokingly responds. However she does it, she certainly does it all very well. Homeowner Wendy Hankins sums it up with, “My husband and I met Cindy in 2017 when we bought a beach condo in Perdido Key. Her professionalism, positive attitude, and enthusiasm were impressive and our relationship has bloomed into a special friendship. She has been involved in many of our business projects in addition to our personal home. Even Jean Claude, our Frenchie, looks forward to her visits!”

As the terms “grandmillenial” and “quiet luxury” seep into our everyday vocabulary, we decided to check in with local expert Greg Riley of Yellow House Antiques & Interiors in Mobile. Knowing many of us can relate to the buyer’s remorse we face as we labor over a set of inexpensive furniture directions, he sets us straight on the importance of a few good pieces. As fans of so many interior design vibes, and due to the fact that brown furnishings are back in a big way, we’re all ears as he guides us through the antique pieces every home enthusiast needs. s many brave young couples scoop up the glorious historic homes lining Government Street and beyond, we’ve been inspired by their new take on the old classics. We’ve seen disco balls on antique sideboards, every glorious room painted in the same clean cream color dotted with modern black accessories, and more. Making it their own, many are keenly interested in learning about the craftsmanship of yesteryear and which antique furnishings retain their value in terms of investment. So smart and savvy, some are even welcoming the family silver and china. Grandmillennial style combines traditional pieces with modern elements. Simply put, it is just a new term that defines an established design style with a return to elegance adopted by the generation of millennials now in their late 20’s and 30’s. And for Greg, this is welcome news! As the founder, owner and operator of Yellow House Antiques & Interiors with his partner Jim Louden, they specialize in 18th and 19th century antiques. Combing the world to handpick unique pieces to bring to the Gulf Coast, they have been in business for over 30 years. Set in a large home, the eye-catching goods simply go on forever. Also a social destination, you’d be hard pressed not to run into friends and the who’s who here. To further utilize their talents, Greg and Jim offer full design services as well as custom furniture, wallpaper, rugs, and window treatments. Not to be outdone, they also specialize in custom lamp work, lamp repair, and quality lamp shades and finials. And then there’s their expertise. “It is so wonderful that the younger generations are seeking out antiques. I’ve been amazed as to how curious they are to learn about them!” Greg shares. Aiming to provide a simple guide to acquiring the perfect pieces, Greg often advises the younger generations about items that have time-tested beauty, quality, and substance. “I love teaching people about the investment aspect of antiques. Just like real estate, good pieces often retain their value and can even gain value over time,” Greg adds.

Blue & White Porcelain Works In Every Room.
Large Paintings, Like This One By Artist B’Beth Weldon, Create Worldly Elegance When Mixed WIth Collections From The Past.
Getting to it, Greg’s top antiques everyone should invest in include an armoire, Georgian chest of drawers, sideboard or buffet, blue and white porcelain pieces, and accent tables. With the promise of lasting a lifetime, these classics will never go out of style and can easily be mixed with pieces from other decades — including today’s modern assembly required items. Talking about quiet luxury, Greg explains, “A lovely Georgian chest of drawers in walnut, pine, oak, or mahogany can be formal or casual and go in any room of the house. I love them in an entryway topped with contemporary art like a lucite sculpture as it sets up what guests will experience in the rest of the home. But they truly can go in most any room as they are multifunctional and offer ample storage. They are wonderful in living rooms and, of course, bedrooms, too.” Curious as to the term Georgian, Greg says, “There’s so much interesting history to know! Essentially, the Georgian era ran from 1714 up until 1837, when Queen Victoria was crowned. In reality, the Georgian era does not represent any one style of antique furniture but rather, a continuum in the evolution of design. It represents a number of distinct styles from Rococo, to Chippendale, Neoclassicism to Regency, and more. However, there was a certain spirit of the Georgian age as there were waves of incredible art, literature, design, and architecture. We look for dovetailing, mixed materials, hand finishing, and a high standard of craftsmanship. This is why it’s vital to shop at a credible source as it would be extremely rare to find a true antique at a flea market! Over the years many reproductions have been made, but they typically are more expensive and do not retain their value.”

A sideboard or buffet is another one of Greg’s musthaves. “A southern staple, many are not aware of the difference between the two. Antique buffets originated in Europe, mainly France. And sideboards generally hail from England and even America. The best part is that they are both so functional and versatile. They can act as a serving surface for dessert, coffee, h’orderves, cocktails and wine, or an entire meal. Big on charm and personality, they work so well and stand out in large dining rooms. I absolutely love seeing them under a contemporary painting as they easily accommodate the mix of designs we’re seeing today. They also retain their value in a time where younger people are tiring of all the painted subpar pieces” Moving on, Greg is a true fan of antique accent and side tables. “We sell so many of these as they mix well with contemporary upholstery and furnishings. Typically on the smaller side, they can be used between club chairs, at the end of a sofa, and in unique nooks. The tilt-top pie crust tea tables as well as the Pembroke tables are always in high demand. Interestingly, the Pembroke table is named after Lady Pembroke. When high tea came into fashion, she wanted a table with leaves that would go up when serving tea and down when finished. Now we use them as an accent table for everything!” Greg shares. If you’ve paid attention, the homes we crave typically boast a piece of blue and white porcelain. “A key to the understated quiet luxury look, we have an extensive selection of these timeless treasures in the store that range from Asian to English Staffordshire. Always in vogue, the blue and white lamps, vases, urns, platters, and plates go with every style of decor and always add a lot of depth to a design scheme. Blue and white Dutch Delft is coveted but since they were universally created, options abound!” Greg tells us.

Antique Chests Make The Perfect Entryway.
Historically, blue and white porcelain became mainstream in China between the late 1300s and 1600s before reaching its peak in the early 1700s. The development of this art form was due to a combination of Chinese methods and Islamic trade. The distinctive blue color comes from cobalt ores imported from Persia. These pieces have clearly stood the test of time. And last but not least, Greg recommends an antique armoire. “I’ve noted people are growing tired of having a television on the wall! An antique armoire offers a solid solution and will serve you well. As homes get bigger, or even if you’re renovating a large historic home, these grand pieces provide a lot bang for the buck! A historical favorite, countless distinguished styles exist and they also blend well with most styles,” Greg explains. Just like any other type of furniture, the armoire came to be because there was a need for it. In this case, the need was for storage, and who among us doesn’t need more of that? “Updated by the French in the 17th century, the earliest armoires date to medieval times when they were known as presses. Usually built of oak, a press had shelves for storing linens or clothes. Over time the look changed and today people use them to store clothing, dishes, stereo systems, photo albums, and more,” Greg adds. Thankful for the breakdown and history lessons, Greg sums it up by sharing, “I’ve absolutely enjoyed working with the younger crowd on bringing pieces with substance and elegance into their design schemes. Their response has been great and some have even reported that learning about antiques has proved invaluable in terms of being able to hold intelligent conversations with the quiet luxury crowd, too.” Hopefully Greg’s five easy pieces make the complicated world of design a bit easier to navigate. A local gem, he’s always happy to guide those interested and we’d bet our lunch, he’ll become an invaluable friend, too.

While her husband and five children confirmed she was beautiful and crazy for thinking she wasn’t, Charlie Wallace made the decision to make herself happy. And choosing cosmetic surgeon James Koehler, M.D., to fulfill her dreams proved to be the right decision. With the details of her very personal journey through what’s commonly referred to as a “Mommy Makeover,” Charlie and Dr. Koehler opened up about the various aspects of what it’s really like. Knowing many of us have pondered this option, it’s clear to see that choosing a top-notch surgeon and being a compliant patient really can result in liking your own body. ith boundless energy and a soaring spirit, Charlie Wallace spreads joy wherever she goes. A Daphne resident originally from Madison Mississippi, Charlie always knew she wanted her children to grow up with sandy feet surrounded by fresh salty air. Creating blended bliss, Charlie was thrilled to have what she and her and her husband Joshua lovingly refer to as “bonus children.” Having birthed 4 out of their 5 children that are now mostly selfsufficient, Charlie realized she could take some time to care for herself. “As a mother to 5 children, I had given so much of myself to them and it took a toll on my body. Over 11 years, I was either pregnant or nursing and went from a double zero to a size 12. I wasn’t overweight but I had a momma pooch and deflated breasts. My abs were stretched apart and no matter how many sit ups I did, nothing was going to put them back together. I can easily recall when my children would play with my belly as it was soft and squishy. That was sweet, but eventually they grew up. My husband has always told me I’m beautiful and he was sad when I made comments about how I felt in my skin,” Charlie explains. Wanting the outside to resemble the inside, Charlie made the decision to set up a consultation with Dr. James Koehler of Eastern Shore Cosmetics. “My husband and I went to meet him and his staff. I was so nervous about what it would be like for my husband and I to reveal
my body to him! However, Dr. Koehler made both of us feel extremely comfortable and he was very professional as we shared our hopes and expectations. Also, he was very honest and realistic about the overall experience. Having done my own research, I knew it was not going to be an instant fix,” Charlie shares. Explaining common post pregnancy conditions, Dr. Koehler explains, “Pregnancy and childbirth can take a huge toll on women’s bodies. Stretch marks, abdominal muscle separation and skin laxity are a few very common aftereffects of the tremendous feat their bodies go through. Muscle separation can only be fixed surgically. It can be very difficult for some women to see their body after working so hard through diet and exercise, only to still have extra loose skin and softness in their abdomen. The breasts can also have the same skin laxity after breastfeeding. A lot of women require a mastopexy or breast lift for this reason.” With Dr. Koehler’s expertise, Charlie made her decision. “I chose to have a mommy makeover due to the fact that it offers customized procedures to best suit each patient. I went with a breast augmentation, muscle repair on my abdominal muscles, liposuction on my lower back and stomach, and a full tummy tuck. I worked out hard prior to surgery and ate right because I knew that would help with a faster recovery! My biggest concern was about the pain and when I would be able to hold Waylyn, my youngest daughter. And while I appreciated all my former body had done for me, it was time to say goodbye to my mama stripes.”
As for his part? “Charlie came to me hoping to improve her abdominal area and breasts, and to feel better about her body after four pregnancies. I recommended an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast implants, and a bit of liposuction to help contour her new tummy. A mommy makeover can be a transformative experience, but it presents various challenges for surgeons. Successful outcomes depend on meticulous planning, skillful execution, effective communication, and great postoperative care. It typically takes six months to a year to see the final results and recovery might involve drains, dressings, activity restriction, and scar care. Open communication with the surgeon is essential to ensure a successful outcome,” Dr. Koehler explains. Getting into the specifics, Dr. Koehler shares, “A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty is often performed on patients who have excess skin and fat in the abdominal region, which may result from pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging. An inherent aspect, a tummy tuck includes a permanent scar along the lower abdomen and I strive to make the incision as discreet as possible. Proper patient selection and preoperative assessments are crucial and patients must have realistic expectations about the outcome. However, a tummy tuck can provide significant improvement.” When it comes to breast augmentation, Dr. Koehler adds, “It’s important to remember breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, and they may require replacement or revision in the future. Patients should have realistic expectations about the results, as breast augmentation can enhance the appearance of the breasts but may not necessarily achieve perfection or resolve body image issues. Choosing the right implant size, shape, and type is critical to achieving the desired outcome while maintaining a natural appearance.” As for Charlie’s post surgery experience? “Right after the surgery I was still feeling the anesthesia and I was on top of the world. I was walking fast and probably overdid it! The next day was a different story. I was sore and swollen, and every movement was hard. My back pain was pretty severe in the early days, but was so much better after Layne showed me that my binder wasn’t tight enough at my one week check up. Of course the pain medication helped and it truly wasn’t unbearable. Perhaps the hardest aspects were being patient and learning how to get through daily activities with my three drains. After 9 days, I felt comfortable and at two weeks post-op, I was getting pretty independent. Understanding it takes time to see the full results, I am eight weeks out and still have some swelling. Walking, staying hydrated, and eating a lot of protein is key and I was shocked that I didn’t experience more bruising. Knowing it could take six months for the swelling to be completely gone, I was stunned when I could see the ab definition I never knew was under my fluff!”

“It really feels like true friendships were formed with Dr. Koehler and his entire staff. They made it so easy and even have an app to send picture messages anytime of the day. Thanks to them, I finally have confidence and feel beautiful. I have always dreaded swimsuit shopping or having to put on a swimsuit, but now I can focus on having fun and not how I look.”
Also surprised by the disappearance of her lower back pain since having her abdominal muscles repaired, Charlie shares, “It really feels like true friendships were formed with Dr. Koehler and his entire staff. They made it so easy and even have an app to send picture messages anytime of the day. Thanks to them, I finally have confidence and feel beautiful. I have always dreaded swimsuit shopping or having to put on a swimsuit, but now I can focus on having fun and not how I look.” Knowing women have many options that include traveling abroad for cost savings, Dr. Koehler is passionate about this very topic. “Choosing a surgeon for cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is a significant decision. For starters, it’s important to know that the U.S. has stringent regulations and safety standards for medical facilities, surgeons, and procedures. American surgeons are typically board-certified, ensuring that they have undergone rigorous training and maintain high standards of surgical competence. Also, American surgeons have access to state-of-the-art facilities, technology, and medical advancements so they are more likely to offer the latest techniques and procedures, resulting in safer and more effective outcomes. My facility is AAAHC certified, meaning we have gone through extensive inspections to ensure our surgical facility is top-notch. Plus, if you experience complications or require follow-up care after surgery, having a surgeon in the same country allows for easier access to additional treatment, and follow-up appointments. Lastly, traveling abroad for surgery carries risks such as language barriers, unfamiliar medical practices, different legal systems, and the potential for unregulated facilities. The cost savings may not outweigh the potential complications and traveling immediately after surgery can increase the risk of complications, including blood clots. If cost is a concern, explore financing options or consult with American surgeons who offer affordable payment plans. Ultimately, choosing a well-qualified, board-certified American surgeon can provide peace of mind, reduce risks, and increase the likelihood of achieving the desired results safely,” he advises. Fast forward, Charlie shares, “My children are actually very proud of me for choosing myself. It was really nice to hear my children reassure me and be supportive of what I wanted even though they thought I was beautiful. I kept telling myself no pain no gain and I am so thrilled with the results!”. Interestingly, Charlie and her husband are social media influencers and Dr. Koehler happily allowed them to document the process on their TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook platforms under 7blended and Mrs7blended. “I never want anyone to have body shaming issues or think they’re not enough. I worried that having the surgery would say I was ashamed as there’s always been a stigma around plastic surgery. I knew I wanted to break that cycle and that’s why I’ve been so transparent,” a happy Charlie concludes.

OUTLINER STUDIO:
BEAUTY EMPOWERED In the world of beauty and self-expression, there’s a new transformative artistry at play that’s changing lives one brushstroke at a time. Knowing beauty is more than skin deep, Mary Emily Davidson is at the forefront of this evolution. As the owner of Outliner Studio, a Mobile-based haven where beauty meets empowerment and technology, she uses her globally earned skills in permanent makeup and her accomplished artist eye to help us all look and feel our best. With a vision that extends far beyond the perfect brow or lip, Outliner Studio is not just a business; it’s a community, a support system, and a place where lives are changed every day. utliner Studio’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. It all began in a small one-room studio that has expanded to a sprawling 2,500-square-foot beautiful space, housing a team of three Permanent Makeup (PMU) Artists, a PMU Training Center, Permanent Makeup Supplies, and so much more. The new space, dreamed up by owner, Mary Emily Davidson, and brought to life by interior designer, Trini Bryant, exudes a modern, elegant, and inviting aura, reflecting the diversity of the women they serve. With the goal of helping women wake up looking made up, the benefits of PMU are self-explanatory yet, for some, the term ”permanent makeup” can be intimidating. “Building trust about permanent makeup has been a journey filled with patience, sharing real-life results, and referrals from satisfied clients, doctors, and individuals who have witnessed our work,” says Mary Emily, “Now our clients truly trust our process!” Outliner Studio specializes in services like Lip Blushing, Permanent Brows, and Permanent Eyeliner, all of which can enhance one’s natural beauty. Understanding that all shortcuts are welcome as women often find themselves adding lip color or lining their brows at stop lights only to have it slide off in the humidity, permanent makeup by definition is also known as permanent cosmetics, derma-pigmentation, micro-pigmentation, microshading, and cosmetic tattooing. It is a cosmetic technique which employs tattoos as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eye-lining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids. And while the word tattoo is a bit unnerving for many, it is nothing like the process as an actual tattoo since the pigments, technique and even tools are different - and a bonus is that it is relatively pain free. The true area of focus regarding getting the results you seek should be the training and artistic eye of the professional you choose. After all, it is an art form requiring extensive knowledge of technique, color theory, science and the understanding of skin. and it should be noted that Mary Emily is also a highly-trained and talented painter.
64
The artists at Outliner Studio focus on technique, ensuring that results heal beautifully. “Many artists and inexperienced PMU artists work with techniques that saturate too much and work too deep into the skin which can create undesirable results, scar tissue or even hair loss,” shared Mary Emily. “Our Permanent Makeup Training program focuses on providing the most extensive information around about the tools, equipment, color theory, skin and technique! We work relentlessly on developing the proper technique.” Since incredible permanent makeup also requires knowledge of equipment, color science, and a non-invasive technique. With exponential growth, they now offer extensive training programs for those eager to learn the artform that includes Permanent Makeup Primary Training which is one of the most extensive and longest Permanent Makeup Training programs in the entire country. They also offer Advanced Eyeliner Training and 2D and 3D Areola Training. In addition to Mary Emily, their team now includes two talented Permanent Makeup Artists - Katie Vogtner and Carson Bates. In addition to creating the most natural and prettiest lips and brows, they’ve ventured into Scalp Micropigmentation for both women and men. A solution for hair loss and thinning which camouflages the lost area of hair with the appearance of hair follicles through the art of micropigmentation (SMP), this is an exciting treatment that’s quickly becoming very popular for those seeking scalp coverage but don’t want to undergo some of the more costly and invasive options available or fool with scalp powders.
“OUR PERMANENT MAKEUP TRAINING PROGRAM FOCUSES ON PROVIDING THE MOST EXTENSIVE INFORMATION AROUND ABOUT THE TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, COLOR THEORY, SKIN AND TECHNIQUE! WE WORK RELENTLESSLY ON DEVELOPING THE PROPER TECHNIQUE.”

A PATH to CHARACTER They say one good thing always leads to another. And this was certainly true after covering Cathleen (Cathy) DeLaGarza’s exciting journey as a fighter pilot in a recent issue. Discovering she is the President of the Lower Alabama Lacrosse program led to lengthy conversation about sweet memories, the benefits of an all-inclusive athletic program, and more. Here, she scores massive points with coach Tom Doyle as they outline the benefits of this mysterious sport and how our children can try it out for free. By Hayley Hill
I
can clearly recall the day I drove by a big sign in Daphne that said “Free Lacrosse Clinic.” With a car full of children, my twins, Beau and Stella, screamed with delight and pressed to join. Knowing the benefit of being involved in sports, I was happy to comply despite the closet full of unused tap shoes, buckets of dusty basketballs, and, well you get the picture. Thinking this would be a fun way for my children to be outside and get some exercise, we enrolled. Never thinking they would stick with it, I was surprised when they wanted to play the sport fulltime after participating in the Learn to Play program. Impressed with the leadership, dedicated coaches, and the parents that lined the fields, I did worry about the travel, equipment costs, and the time commitment required. A true confession? As a single hard-working mom, I really

wondered if I could do this. And as single moms, we often look for programs that are led by exemplary men as that is a force often missing in our sons lives. We also love exposing our daughters to strong female examples, too. Delivered in spades, we were all aboard the lacrosse train. Interestingly, Lacrosse’s origins can be traced back to various indigenous tribes in North America, where the game was played for centuries before European contact and known as “The Creator’s Game”. The tenants of this game espouse values, tradition, and love of competition. Having been raised in the north, I was certainly familiar with its heritage. Steeped in tradition that beckons striped scarves, classic Ray Ban frames, and collegiate sweaters, I basked in the promise of sitting on the sidelines amongst crunchy leaves and the smell of fall as my children wore themselves out.
For her role, Cathy oversees the Lower Alabama Bayhawk lacrosse programs which include youth K-8th (boys and girls), girls high school and boys high school. This includes recruiting, retention, and scheduling play with other organizations along the Gulf Coast. “Lacrosse is a spring season sport, generally practiced after the first of the year with games through late April and early May. The best part is that no experience is necessary! Also, we are currently collaborating with other lacrosse organizations throughout the state in an effort to sanction lacrosse as a sport for competition with the Alabama High School Sports Association,” Cathy shares. A large responsibility, Cathy reveals,“My son Joseph began playing with the Bayhawks in the 3rd grade. Our immediate experience was so positive! We encountered a sense of family, sportsmanship, and camaraderie that we had not experienced in any of the other sports our three sons had participated in. Because of the origins of the sport that purport honoring the game, lacrosse has been a cornerstone in teaching our son the virtues of respect, tenacity, and care for his teammates. My involvement began as a Team Mom, and from there I was asked to join the board of directors in the role of Vice President where I served as youth coordinator. Getting to know my counterparts across the coast served as a catalyst in my current role as President. My involvement and love of the sport has developed side by side with my son’s over the years.”
In an attempt to introduce local families to the sport, the Learn to Play program allows players and their parents to experience the passion of the game for free. “Lacrosse creates a sense of joy for the participant and parents alike as it is not only a fun sport to play, but also to watch. It’s unique as it also compliments other sports in the development of the athlete. Additionally, it enhances and emphasizes a player’s understanding of teamwork that goes beyond the sport to help build lifelong confidence and character. We’ve also had multiple players receive all league honors that have gone on to play college lacrosse, ” Cathy adds. In a community driven by our love of football, Cathy offers unique insight. “We are a small, tight-knit community that is supportive of each players development and encourages family involvement. We are competitive yet provide inclusion for all. It is my hope that people realize other athletic outlets and sports exist besides football, basketball and baseball. Often you see children sitting on the bench that when given the opportunity, thrive in a more progressive and inclusive environment. While prevalent in the North East, lacrosse is foreign to most local families so there is some hesitation. However, we offer many opportunities to learn about the sport and just being willing to pick up a stick is the first hurdle!” Cathy explains. As the High School Men’s Head Coach, Tom Doyle shares, “There are true athletes in Alabama and a number of them are not interested in our states traditional sports. And many do not understand the opportunities and excitement lacrosse provides. Additionally, lacrosse has changed over the years as the game is now extremely fast with high scores. The speed and athleticism needed to compete is tremendous and the LAL coaches encourage players to play the way the remainder of the country does. We build men first. Lacrosse is secondary. When you build the man; lacrosse comes naturally.”
Having reached many exciting milestones, Tom adds, “The men’s high school team are the defending Back-to-Back Gulf South Lacrosse League Champions. Over the last three seasons, 3 Bayhawk team members have been named USA Lacrosse All Americans. A USA Lacrosse All American is recognized as one of the best high school players in the U.S. We’ve had multiple players receive all league honors and have gone on to play college lacrosse. This year marked the first Bayhawk starting goalie committed to play for the 9-time National Champions for the University of Virginia Cavaliers. Moreover, many LAL players have achieved perfect ACT scores, received multiple scholarships, and have gone on to play other sports at the college level.” Often viewed as an expensive sport, Cathy shares, “We purposefully keep the fees manageable due to the need to travel outside of our immediate area to compete. the HAUNTED BOOKSHOP Nestled in the heart of Downtown Mobile, lies The Haunted Book Shop—a place that is more than just somewhere to buy books; it is a living testament to the enduring love of literature and a tribute to a family legacy that spans generations. Angela Trigg, the proud owner of this unique establishment, invites book lovers of all ages to embark on a journey through the enchanting world of literature. By Caroline Edmondson
T
he history of The Haunted Book Shop dates back to 1941 when Angela’s grandmother co-founded the original store with Cameron Plummer. For half a century, it graced Downtown Mobile with its literary presence. Some of the most cherished stories are from those early days, such as hosting one of the first book signings for the legendary Harper Lee and being a frequented stomping ground by a young Eugene Walter. These tales serve as a testament to the shop’s enduring connection to the literary community. “When Bienville Books closed, where I also worked as a cashier, I saw an opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream of owning and operating my own bookstore,” recalls Angela. In keeping with tradition, the store has relocated once, mirroring the original shop’s history of moving twice. The current location at 9 S. Joachim St., right across from The Saenger Theatre, provides a picturesque setting for book enthusiasts to immerse themselves in their favorite pastime. At The Haunted Book Shop, the mission is to make shopping for books an unforgettable experience. The shop sees itself as a literary concierge, guiding customers through the vast world of books, whether through events, engaging conversations with knowledgeable staff, or the carefully curated displays designed to spark the joy of discovery.

The shop understands that in an age of online shopping giants like Amazon, bookstores must offer something more—a personal touch, a sense of community, and a passion for storytelling. “And actually, the first threat to indie bookstores like The Haunted Book Shop was actually the emergence of Big Box stores like Borders, B&N, and others,” shares Angela. “But then along came Amazon, which could outdo the Big Box stores in the Large Selection game. And so now, it’s the Big Box stores that are under threat, and stores like mine are having a resurgence, with new stores opening all the time around the country. We’re not in competition with Amazon. We offer something they can’t: an experience. We don’t see books as just widgets to sell like they do.” Much of the shop’s success is owed to the resurgence of in-person shopping, driven by millennials and Gen Z. These generations understand the importance of supporting local businesses and are passionate advocates for the unique experiences that independent shops provide. “Without them I wouldn’t have the number of staff I have, nor be able to provide the free programs we offer, donate to local non-profits, or have even been able to move to our amazing new location!” One of the most rewarding aspects of running The Haunted Book Shop is the symbiotic relationship shared with customers. They play an integral role in shaping the store. Books are stocked based on their recommendations, events they desire are hosted, and the shop grows
in response to their support. It’s a testament to the power of community and the impact individuals can have on a small, local business. Despite the name, The Haunted Book Shop is not just about ghost stories or horror novels. It’s a general new and used bookstore, offering a diverse range of titles, including an enchanting children’s section with a cozy reading tent. “The name comes from my grandmother’s favorite book, “The Haunted Bookshop” by Christopher Morley, in which he talks about how there are certain books you keep hearing about until you break down and read them—books that haunt you. So we try to stock our store with books that might be haunting you,” she tells us. “Though that doesn’t stop us from having a few confused customers looking for a haunted house during Halloween!” As The Haunted Book Shop moves forward, there are exciting plans on the horizon, including holiday events that promise to add a touch of literary magic to celebrations. The shop is committed to serving as a hub for literary enthusiasts and will continue to foster relationships and partnerships with organizations and businesses in downtown Mobile and beyond. One thing is for certain; you won’t find someone more dedicated to literature, her staff and her store than Angela Trigg. One of her employees, Jodie Cain Smith, Event Coordinator at shop, has this to say about her boss: “I cannot help but smile when I walk into The Haunted Book Shop because I know I am in the presence of loving people and work for a woman who cares about and props up her staff. That kind of authenticity is rarer than I’d like to admit, but Angela Trigg has it in spades.” Oh! And don’t forget to say hello to the beloved store cat, Mr. Bingley, who earned the title of the Cutest Cat in Mobile Nappie in 2022. He’s the friendliest feline in town, greeting customers at the door and adding to the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the shop.

THE WELLNESS WHISPERER While we all love the idea of a big happy family, we also know family dynamics can be tough. Add the pressures of the holiday season and it can be a lot to manage for anyone. Whether you have a wonderful, tight-knit family or you simply tolerate them a couple of times a year, the holidays can be stressful, chaotic, and sometimes straight-up uncomfortable for many. Here, Sydney Wasdin M.Ed., LPC, NCC, RYT, of True Yoga + Therapy shares a few coping strategies and how to set boundaries. By Sydney Wasdin
Hello,! By definition, a boundary is anything that marks a limit. Psychological limits define personal dignity and marks the distinctions between behaviors that do and do not cause emotional harm. Over the years, I’ve learned that setting boundaries can also protect our peace and safeguard our feelings. For starters, think about any triggers you might anticipate. This will help you identify where your needs are and how they can be met by implementing certain boundaries. For example, if you are already feeling stressed about having multiple family parties on your calendar, choose to only go to those that realistically fit into your schedule. Afterall, we all are allowed to value ourselves and our time. Don’t let guilt drive decisions. Unfortunately, not everyone will understand your boundaries so pushback isn’t uncommon. But know that when people resist your boundaries, it’s confirmation that boundaries are needed. Pushback can come in different forms like ignoring you, guilting you into changing your mind, telling you you’re unreasonable, and so on. Don’t be deterred. Instead, stand firm in what you will or will not tolerate. When you talk about boundaries, be calm and don’t beat around the bush. For example, if you don’t want to talk to your parents about your love life, tell them it’s off-limits and not something they should be concerned with right now. When your boundaries are black and white, it’s easier for other people to respect them. Remember that you have the right to set boundaries and don’t feel pressured to over-explain yourself. If you want others to respect your boundaries, you need to respect them too. You’re setting the example and others won’t take them seriously if you don’t. Lastly, if you set clear boundaries and they are violated, don’t be afraid to excuse yourself. While easier said than done, boundaries are a form of self-care. If you need to leave a conversation or an event, so be it. Distancing yourself is not inconsiderate as it will keep you from feeling even more uncomfortable and show that you won’t tolerate others who don’t respect your needs. After all, it can be a wonderful life when we break our people-pleasing patterns and give ourselves the gift of boundaries.
Take care of you , Mama! ,

COCKTAIL KING If you like the sound of maple and black walnut flavorings, you’re not alone. Craving all the flavors of fall, we caught up with Matt LeMond, the man behind some of our favorite cocktails and venues, for the scoop on where to go and what to do as the temperatures begin to cool. With our sweater and boot combos ready, let’s dive into it all. Greetings! After the heat of the summer, our team loves to test its boundless creativity with our fall cocktail menus. As the weather cools, we are inspired by the abundance of warming ingredients that speak to fun, family, and tradition. For example, POST’s Cinder & Spice boasts earthy ingredients like chai and chocolate bitters blended with tequila, the Velvet Flicker is a blend of orange and black walnut bitters, pomegranate, lemon and gin. The Maple Breeze beckons fall with flavors like cinnamon, cointreau, and maple syrup. And Into The Thicket with Old Forester 86 Bourbon, kahlua, rosemary, plum bitters and vanilla is off the hook good. Personally, my favorite is the Roasted & Toasted made with cold brew, black walnut bitters, whiskey, and Frangelico. As in previous columns, I am feeling grateful to have such a wonderful staff. And Destiny Polster is no exception. Having worked with us at POST on the Hill since it opened in 2022, she’s been an important part of our success. When she heard about the opening, she was so excited as she understood it was going to be popular, unique, and unlike other bars in Mobile. Always ensuring our customers have great service, she makes everyone smile as their happiness is so important to her. As a sister to five siblings, she has mentioned that her busy parents wanted to enjoy any chance they got to have an evening to themselves and she definitely carries that mindset into work. Having grown into her role and with a set of followers, she always mentions how lucky she feels to be a part of our team. Well, Destiny, we couldn’t do it without you! Naturally the cooler weather means more people are out and about, especially in downtown Mobile. It’s a great time for being outdoors and strolling through our historical streets. On October 13th we are planning to host an event behind the Cedar Street Social Club with family friendly activities like a dunking booth and more. Connected to The Outsider, The Insider food hall has plenty of offerings to please every friend and family member so be sure to join us for the fall fun as there will truly be something for everyone. Check us out on social media for updates and events. Until then, happy fall from our family to yours!
Cheers!

C Synonymous with southern hospitality, no hostess worth her salt would be caught dead without this quintessential treat in her pantry or freezer. We’re talking cheese straws. Always ready for unexpected guests, our southern influencer, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, can whip up a silver tray of these perfectly stacked noshes at a moment’s notice. But with so many options and so little time, how to choose? A tall order, our hostess with the mostess goes all in.

onsisting of only 5 ingredients, these crispy morsels have been a culinary staple in Southern households for generations. They are believed to have been inspired by the British “cheese biscuit” and have been a documented favorite since appearing in cookbooks, including White House cookbooks, as early as the 1800s. After the turn of the century, and due to popular demand, cheese straws became commercially available as they made the trek from Mema’s kitchen to cocktail party favorite by the 50s. Starting as a convenient way to use up extra cheese in the heat and humidity, they are typically piped out of a cookie press into strips or rolled and sliced into rounds. I prefer this method as they are easy to freeze for later use in this form. Wondering how it could be possible to provide en masse a quality product that could be as good as grandmother’s, I circled the wagons, or rather rallied the ladies, to solve this mystery. I posed the question; “What are your favorite cheese straws to serve?” Now my family has been in Mobile since the late 1700s so I should be a pretty good judge of the best store bought options, right? Well, it would be my luck that I’ve gone almost entirely gluten free in the past few years and therefore needed some help. Luckily for me, my friend Tibbe was hosting friends on her wharf and I could think of no better judges. For my blind tasting I shopped both sides of the bay for as many of these carbohydrate confections as possible. My haul included several standard cheddar choices including Joyce’s, Andree’s, Donna’s, Lizzie’s and the Nut House /3 Georges. With many rif’s on the classic, I decided to include a spicy and an herby iteration. Uncle Amazon even came through with a gluten free offering by Mama Geraldine.

pink table talk On the wharf at last, I piled my tray high with the golden biscuits and added secret identifying sticky notes on the bottom. The ladies were enthusiastic sports and we were all surprised that Lizzie’s White Cheddar and Rosemary flavor got extremely solid marks as a nontraditional favorite. Complete with some heat, they were followed closely by her spicy Cheddar Habanero offering. Her original Classic Cheddar was also a crowd favorite. The ladies at Chive Talkin’ are big fans of Lizzie’s latest addition too, the Cheddar Parmesan with Oregano and Sundried Tomato flavor.
BEST ALL-AROUND: Joyce’s classic cheddar. In a class of their own, and if bigger is better and you’re a shortbread fan, this is it!
BEST CLASSIC: Lizzie’s Classic Cheddar & LA Cheese Straws are tied for classic crunchy cheese straw fans.
Local favorite, Leigh Ann DeLaney’s LA Cheese straws drew rave reviews and are exactly as described; “deep rich cheese flavor with a little kick in the back.” The recipe is passed down from her aptly named grandmother, Nanny Roll Tide. They’re apparently the go to snack for the team at one of my favorite shops, Living Well. Cheese Straws! by Donna are another Fairhope fave. Donna’s recipe has been in her family for more than a century and believe me, there’s a good reason for that. Much to our surprise, everyone guessed which ones were gluten free and we all more than agreed that they were a solid cheese straw option. No surprise to the group as Mama Geraldine was from Georgia after all. Full disclosure on The Nut House cheese straws as they were my mother’s go to and they will always hold a special place in my palate. Joyce’s Cheese Straws are really in a class by themselves as they are more like a delicate cheese shortbread. They don’t have the crispy crunch of a more traditional style but melt in your mouth like a pillow of decadence. I secretly supply a friend in New York City with these as she fancies eating them propped up in bed. Regardless of the event, a taste of these Southern comforts are the perfect addition to any gathering. There’s a perfect bite for everyone, and their delicious texture will keep them coming back for more. And, I’d love to suggest hosting a blind cheese straw taste testing of your own as we sure did enjoy gobbling them up with a glass of wine, of course.
XOXO
