Sadly, summer is coming to a close. Equally sad, summer heat is not over for another month or so. Before we start getting excited about pumpkin spice lattes, and, dare we say it, Christmas decor in the stores already, make sure your AC system didn’t suffer any wear and tear during this sweltering summer. Call today to schedule a check up!

ALL-STAR GAME: Former Major League Baseball player/coach/manager Brad Mills reminisces with some memorabilia from his career, including a memento from when he managed the American League to victory in the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.

ou won’t find Brad Mills’ plaque in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. But Mills, now a Hood County resident, played a part in Major League Baseball history on more than one occasion. Mills was an average-at-best infielder with the Montreal Expos from 1980-83. He divided his time between Triple-A ball and the Expos before his playing career ended at the age of 29 because of a knee injury. But during that time, he became the answer to a trivia question. He was the 3,509th strikeout victim of Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan’s illustrious career, breaking Walter Johnson’s all-time record for career strikeouts. “I still think it was outside,” Mills said with a chuckle about the called third strike of that infamous at-bat. “I’m thinking he has to throw 100 mph for the record, right? That’s what made him famous. I was looking for a fastball, and he threw a curve.” Mills recalled the details leading up to that historic moment. He wasn’t even in the starting lineup that day but went in as a pinch hitter. “We knew he was on the verge of breaking the record. Before the game, players were betting on who it would be. Of course, no one was betting on me,” he said. “And if they put it up on the scoreboard, I don’t remember, but I knew he was close when I came to bat. “The count went to 1-2 and then the next pitch was just outside. I looked in the Astros’ dugout and they were all jumping up because they thought it was strike three. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s me!’” And indeed it was. But that wasn’t the only time the now DeCordova Bend Estates resident was around when history was made.

Mills was a bench coach for the Boston Red Sox in 2004 when they won the World Series, ending an 86-year drought and closing a chapter in their history known as “The Curse of the Bambino.” The Red Sox had won five of the first 15 World Series played before the team sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919, a year after they won their last series with the legend known as “The Great Bambino.” But not only did the Red Sox break the curse in 2004, they did so in historic fashion, becoming the only team in MLB history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series four games to three. And they did it against their hated rival New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. “I’m not going to sit here and tell you I was smart enough to see it coming, so after Johnny Damon’s grand slam in Game 7 is when I began to realize it could really happen,” Mills said, smiling at the memory. “After Game 3, I ripped the lineup card off the wall to shreds, I was so upset. We had the talent to have the lead in the series and yet we were down 3-0 and nobody had ever come back from that.” But that team did. And Mills has a theory as to what may have played a key role. Before every home game at Yankee Stadium, where Games 6 and 7 were played, the Yankees pay tribute to the great players in their history. Opposing teams are forced to see and hear it, adding to what is already an intimidating atmosphere — especially in the old Yankee Stadium (the new one opened in 2009), “The House That Ruth Built.” But because of a threat of rain, the Red Sox took batting practice indoors instead of on the field before Game 6. Then, before Game 7, the Red Sox made the decision to also skip batting practice on the field. “That was a very smart decision, and whether it was a big factor in us winning the game and series, who knows, but we didn’t need to hear that,” Mills said. “And in the World Series, the guys just weren’t going to let up. We just went in and steamrolled the Cardinals — and they were a

FAMILY THRILL: Brad Mills celebrates with his son Beau and their family after Boston won the 2004 World Series — one of two championships Brad enjoyed being part of as a bench coach with the Red Sox.

great team with a great manager (Tony La Russa). “And they had great fans. After we swept them in Game 4, their fans stayed around and clapped for us. I’ll never forget that.” What made that season even more special was Mills was working alongside his longtime friend, then Red Sox manager Terry Francona (now the manager of the Cleveland Guardians). The two of them played together at the University of Arizona in the late 1970s. They went on to win a second World Series together in 2007 with the Red Sox.

ALL-STARS MANAGER In fact, he believes it was at the suggestion of Francona in 2017 that Mills was named manager of the American League All-Stars — even though Mills was not managing a team at the time (he was Francona’s assistant coach) — when Francona could not lead the team because of a health issue. Mills led the American League to a 2-1 victory. “That was a thrill. I didn’t get the final say that I would manage until maybe that day, so my family didn’t get a chance to come. They were in California and the game was in Miami,” he said. “Behind the scenes, I think Terry had talked to MLB. In basic Terry fashion, he said to me, ‘You’re going to manage the game, don’t screw it up.’” Mills returned to the Expos as a coach in 2003, their next-to-last season in Montreal before moving to Washington in 2005. He said he could see the writing on the wall that his beloved franchise’s days were numbered as financial problems led to their relocation. “I loved Montreal. I still do. I was blessed to play there and to go back as Frank Robinson’s bench coach,” Mills said. “But they were behind the times. MLB had taken ownership and didn’t want to spend money on them.” Mills’ lone managerial stint was with the Houston Astros from 2010-12. During his tenure, the Astros posted a 171-274 record. “I loved Houston. Beautiful stadium. I wish we’d been able to get them out from under that funk,” he said. There was some young talent whom he could see doing special things, Mills said, such as Jose Altuve, who led the team to the 2017 World Series championship. However, that championship was later tainted because of a sign stealing scandal that broke in 2019. “That team was so talented, they didn’t need to do that. I honestly don’t think they thought they were cheating,” he said. “They were without a doubt the best team in baseball. I think they can live that down in time.”

MOVE TO HOOD COUNTY Mills and his family moved to Hood County from California in 2018. His son, Beau, now a retired MLB player himself, bought a ranch and asked his dad and mom to move to the area. As a youngster growing up in California, Brad rode steers. “My older brother got me into it. I wasn’t very good, and it took me away from baseball,” he said. However, Beau became friends with a lot of Brad’s old cowboy buddies in California. “He called me up one day and said, ‘Dad, we can own some bucking bulls,” Brad said. “In 2016, Beau said he wanted to get back into bull riding. I said, ‘You’d better move to Texas, preferably North Texas.’ He asked if I’d move also.” After Brad’s parents passed away, he and his wife Ronda moved to Hood County. In December 2021, Beau sold the ranch and Brad and Ronda

GATE GAME CHANGERS

The following are guidelines for entering DeCordova Bend Estates, welcoming guests, registering your vehicles and setting up your account.

ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS

GAT

Guests use the left lane and stop at the guard shack. For those members who have a guest arriving, call either gate (Front Gate: 817-326-4640; Back Gate: 817-326-5277) to notify Security you are expecting a guest. If you are using the ForeTees app, follow the security link to enter guest information to submit to the gates.

If you have a DFW NTTA toll tag, let membership know upon setting up your account/membership as this will be used to gain access into the automatic gates. Two gate access stickers will be provided to members upon moving into the community if you do not have a toll tag. Any additional stickers needed are available for $37.50 through the Security office. Certain vehicles require a license plate reader, based on the tint of the windows. These readers are available for $50 through the Security office.

Enter the gate at 5 mph for safety reasons. Leave one car length in between you and the car in front of you. If you tailgate behind another member, the gate could come down prematurely and cause damage to your car.

TOLL TAG OR DCBE STICKER?

The Front Gate is open 24 hours a day. The Back Gate is unstaffed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. but entry is available to members via their sticker or linked NTTA tag.

GATE TIPS FOR THE WIN

REMINDER

If you have both a DCBE Transcore sticker and a NTTA toll tag, the gate cannot read both and is slow to open. You may need to put your hand behind the NTTA tag for the gate to read your DCBE-provided sticker. Save time, energy and money by linking your NTTA tag. To set this up, take a picture of your toll tag and email it to security@dcbeweb.com. Security will be able to connect your toll tag. NTTA Zip passes are not compatible with the gates.

Each year in January, a $10.00 gate maintenance fee per vehicle is charged. If you sell a vehicle, inform security to remove the vehicle from your account to avoid being charged this fee. Please do not transfer gate stickers from vehicle to vehicle or a NORV will be issued.

GATE RULES

Any questions or concerns, contact Chief Larry Morgan at 817-964-8114.

Members who are coming through the gate should use the right lane.

MEETING WITH PRESIDENT: Brad Mills, who enjoyed a career in Major League Baseball as a player with the Montreal Expos, a manager with the Houston Astros and as a coach for several teams, visits with the late former President George H.W. Bush. During his time as an MLB coach, Mills was a part of the 2004 and 2007 World Series champion Boston Red Sox.

MILLS, from page 9 moved to DeCordova. The decision came less than two years after Beau’s 18-month-old son Beau, or “Beau Bear” as they called him, fell into a swimming pool and drowned. Beau and his wife, Alicia, have since started the Beau Bear Foundation, which helps other families cope with the grief of losing a child. “It’s helped keep that memory of Beau Bear alive,” Brad said. “Plus, it is so very heartbreaking to lose a child or grandchild. I’m glad they’re doing all they can. They help with funerals, help with vacations and time away for families so they can try to get their life back together, just helping in whatever way they can.” Brad returned from spring training with Cleveland when the tragedy occurred. While he was back home, play was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It turned out to be the last time he would participate in Major League Baseball. He never returned to the Cleveland organization, even though there was a limited 2020 season with no fans. “I participated in all the Zoom meetings, scouting reports, but I was still home with my family,” he said. “Then, it got to June, and they said they were going to have a shortened season, but the family had gotten used to me being home. During that time, I saw how hard it was on them at home. “I’d been gone for so long, I needed to retire and stay with my family. I loved that life, but it’s time for me to be home more, and I’m liking it.” Now, instead of rushing from one stadium to another for the next series, he’s happy to make the occasional trip into Granbury to the store. Rather than go from an extra-inning night game in Cleveland to an afternoon start in Milwaukee, he’s checking his watch to see if he has time to run into town for a few errands before teeing off. He also has more time to visit with his grandchildren. Beau has two other sons, James and Hudson, along with daughter, Kinsey. James plays 9-Under baseball, 6-year-old Hudson is in recreation baseball, and 11-year-old Kinsey plays volleyball. He and Ronda’s youngest daughter Rochelle also lives nearby and has a son, Jack, who plays 12-Under baseball. Oldest daughter Taylor lives in California and has three stepsons and a 3-year-old son of her own. “I get a chance to go out and have batting practice with them; it’s a lot

of fun,” Brad said. “I’m just enjoying my family now. I’m thrilled being with my wife.” Brad and Ronda also enjoy staying active in Stonewater Church, and he can also be found on DeCordova’s golf course. But, now at age 65, has he closed the door on ever going back to big league baseball? “Well, I’ve learned never say never, but the longer you stay away, the tougher it gets,” he said. “I was asked (by Francona, Cleveland’s manager) if I would come back this season. My wife and I talked about it, and she gave me her blessing. But it just didn’t feel right.” Then he was reminded that Dick Vermeil stepped away from coaching in the NFL for 17 seasons before he returned and led the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl championship. “I love the game so much, and it’s been great to me, so it will always be a part of me,” he said. “Whether I ever return or not, I’m so proud and happy to have been involved in the greatest game there is.” And as long as there is trivia, his name will remain immortal.

AUGUST IS TIME FOR

“BACK TO SCHOOL” BY JAY ANN COX Editor

S

ummer sure went by fast, didn’t it? Just like that, it’s time for a new school year. The first day for most of Hood County is Aug. 16. For kids, it’s the end of day camps and Vacation Bible School. No more barefoot days, snow cones on a hot afternoon or a late bedtime. For parents, it’s time to gather up school supplies, find a perfect pair of new shoes and somehow get the kids (and themselves) back into a routine. For teachers, it’s time to report back to their classrooms to prepare for the first day and all those eager students. And for everyone, it’s time to keep a sharp eye out for kids walking to the bus stop and for the fleet of buses to hit the streets twice a day. Don’t forget to observe the school zone speed limits. To make this transition a little bit smoother, here is a handy primer for “Back to School.”

DCBE CAMP BRINGS SKILL BUILDING AND FUN TOGETHER

T

he art camp took place from June 13-16 at the Community Center. The camp was hosted by Brandy Lillagore from Acton Elementary, who has been teaching for 24 years. Doing art helps children build self-esteem, practice motor skills and artistic technique, not to mention it’s great fun. The projects each day ranged from chalk art, painting and drawing to fiber and plastic works. The kids loved it so much that the decision was made to offer a second art camp in July.

Pictured, from left, are Jeremy Cox, Shawn Wood and Jase Cox with their big striped bass catch on Lake Granbury. They were staying in Indian Harbor.

River is the salt content. It is advisable to get an aluminum or galvanized trailer when you buy a boat. A standard steel trailer will rust fairly quickly. You should rinse your trailer after every fishing trip to remove the salt. This will extend the life of your trailer. If you do see rust, take care of it quickly. There are special paints that are rust-resistant. Make sure you take care of that trailer. It has to get you there. It is just as important as the boat.

HOOD COUNTY FISHING REPORT Water temperatures are in the middle to the upper 80s. Thermocline is present on many areas of Lake Granbury, about 20-25 feet down. Sand bass are schooling from Indian Harbor to DeCordova. Crappie are good on submerged timber on many areas of the lake. Catfish continue to be good on baited holes near standing timber. Largemouth bass are good in numbers on crankbaits and soft plastics fished near main lake points and near deeper docks. Striped bass when located are good to 9 pounds on live shad and slabs.

OTHER AREAS On other reservoirs, Lake Whitney and Possum Kingdom Lake continue to boast on limits of striped bass on live bait and downrigged jigs on the lower ends. Possum Kingdom striped bass are good to 15 pounds. michael.acosta@att.net | 254-396-4855
