COMING CLEAN: NORVEX SUPPLY CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS IN 2022
W
hen it comes to cleaning, the Norvell family has seen it all. From floor care to odor control to laundry and dishwashers, Norvex, formerly Southeastern Janitorial Supply, has remained as a go-to source for chemicals, supplies and equipment in the state of Kentucky. As explained by former President Danny Norvell, the business actually got its start as Southeastern Chemical Co. in 1972, located on South Main Street in Corbin. When the original owner, Milton Oaks, passed away in 1976, his widow and Norvell’s mother, who had been a silent investor since the beginning, became equal partners. They decided to bring on retired 7-Up plant manager Bill Green to run the business until he resigned in 1981, which is when Norvell himself came into the fold as president.
Story and photographs by Trevor Sherman
“We ran it by a shoe string for quite some time,” Norvell explained. “But I knew it had potential.” Norvell changed the name of the business to Southeastern Janitorial a couple of years later, and that is what customers knew it as until 2014 when the name was changed again, this time to Norvex Supply. Eleven years prior to the final name change, the business relocated from South Main Street to the current location of 1807 Goodwin Street, just a couple of blocks over. All along the way, regardless of name or location, Norvex has maintained its status as this region’s most reliable source of paper products, cleaning chemicals, janitorial supplies and equipment. Eventually, Danny stepped aside as president of the company, allowing his wife, Linda, to take over those duties, and when their son, Martin, graduated college in

the mid-nineties, he stepped in and began handling many of the day-to-day operations. Now vice president, Martin Norvell said, “With 50 years of industry experience, we have managed to develop a lot of supply chain connections, and establish relationships with top manufacturers. We are a full spectrum facility supplier, and with two different distribution centers (Corbin and Elizabethtown), we can cover pretty much anywhere in Kentucky, and even some areas of bordering states as well.” Still, despite the growth of the company, the Norvells want to make it known that they are still very much a family-owned small business at heart. “We continue to see more mergers in this industry,” Martin explained. “That tends to be okay at first, but then it tends to flow into a more corporate structure where a lot of the personal service is sacrificed. It becomes less about the service, and more about just moving product.” For this reason, Norvex prides itself not only on the quality of the products that it offers, but even more so on the service that it provides after the sale. “Martin and I have talked extensively about the service aspect,” Danny Norvell said. “People still like to have that personal service. You’re not really just selling floor finish. You’re selling a nice, clean, shiny floor. It’s the same with window cleaner. You’re actually selling a clean window to the Photos below courtesy of Norvex
customer, and not just a bottle of solution. Then, if something goes wrong, we’re there to help figure out why, and offer guidance.” “We tend to be a little faster, and more responsive than many of the bigger companies out there,” Martin added. “That is what continues to make us so effective in the industry. We want to take care of our customers, and save them money through efficiency, not just good pricing on products.” Moving into the future, Norvex Supply is looking to continue growing and changing to better suit the needs of their customers across a wide range of industries, such as hospitality, education, medical, long-term care, automotive and food service, just to name a few. That includes expanding upon already existing options, such as online ordering, and incorporating new technologies, such as the digital temperature monitoring system that debuted earlier this year. Of course, a strong knowledge in various dispensing systems, and the ability to service equipment will always be a main focus for Norvex technicians and sales representatives, as will their auto-restock program, which has never been more valuable to customers than it is right now, in 2022. “We know that our customers are dealing with limited labor and time,” Martin Norvell said. “So, we like to offer automatic restocking, which results in a lot of labor savings. In addition to monitoring any chemical systems, we will also perform routine checks

of supplies, making sure to maintain adequate stock levels. It is one way that we can make life a little easier for our customers.” In the end, the Norvell family is proud to be servicing customers farand-wide under the Norvex Supply banner, but after 50 years in business, they With 50 years of inknow that none of it would dustry experience, have been possible without we have managed the support of the busito develop a lot nesses, schools and mediof supply chain cal facilities right here in the connections, and tri-county area. establish relation“Our local area has been ships with top so great, and so supportmanufacturers. ive,” Martin Norvell said. “We are lucky to be doing a lot of business in a lot of places, but our local communities have always been our bread and butter.

Let’s face it: choosing the right college is not an easy task. There are many factors to consider, especially when it comes to price. For most parents, finding a college that is financially affordable is a top priority. Most colleges are quick to tell you their tuition cost, but that is rarely reflective of the full cost of college. There’s also room and board. Laundry fees. Textbooks. Parking fees. Technology fees. Recreation fees. Need we go on? The good news: that isn’t the case at University of the Cumberlands. Our sticker price is what you pay, period. We believe you and your student should be able to afford an education, learn in a quality academic setting, and have your needs put first, without all the fine print. That’s the Cumberlands Commitment.

U
niversity of the Cumberlands continues to earn its reputation as one of the nation’s top colleges. The University of the Cumberlands has racked up so many accolades in recent years that it has been difficult to keep track. And rightfully so. With a continued emphasis on campus expansion and beautification, plus a neverending effort to find new and innovative ways to cater to both existing and prospective enrollees, the university has earned the right to be considered among the top institutions for higher education in the entire country. A recent press release from the university offered details of the impressive five recognitions bestowed by Colleges of Distinction for the 2022-23 academic year, saying, “The university made Colleges of Distinction’s nationwide listing of top colleges, top Christian colleges, top colleges in Kentucky, top

business degree programs, and top education degree programs.” “This marks the fifth consecutive year Cumberlands has made Colleges of Distinction’s list of top colleges in the nation. Cumberlands is only one of seven Kentucky colleges recognized by the organization for the 2022-2023 academic year.” “Colleges of Distinction looks at four pillars when deciding to give a college their stamp of approval: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community, and Successful Outcomes.” In addition to this achievement, Cumberlands has also gained national notoriety recently for its online offerings, with U.S. News and World Reports naming the online graduate education and online graduate psychology programs in their latest top 300 report. The university’s online Doctor of Education program was also included in Princeton Review’s top

50 list, and Money.com ranked U of C 461 out of 671 on their “Best Colleges in America 2022” report. Growing from 1,300 student on campus in 2005 to over 19,000 students worldwide in 2022, Cumberlands is clearly doing many things right. Much of that success can be attributed to the vision and leadership from President Larry Cockrum. Under Dr. Cockrum’s watch during the past eight years, U of C has expanded its offerings considerably, with over 170 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and certificate programs now available. The university has also gone to great lengths to ensure that a college education is not only attainable, but affordable as well, making headlines in recent years by cutting the cost of tuition considerably, and even offering free textbooks. Financially speaking, Cumberlands has used enrollment revenue to invest in campus programs and facilities, allowing them to
operate debt-free as of June 2022. “I believe we were all put on this earth to help people,” Dr. Cockrum said in a recent Q&A. “The success of a president isn’t defined by position or power, but by the positive impact they have on the lives of others. We are here to serve our students. As a university, our success is defined by the success of our students.” Looking ahead, the University of the Cumberlands will continue to make every effort to be as accommodating as possible to its enrollees, whether that means winning awards for safety on campus, further expanding both in-person and online programs, or working with students to ensure that they can earn a college degree while sustaining minimal debt, or no debt at all in many cases. hat’s the secret to maintaining a thriving business for over five decades? Hacker Brothers, Inc. Owner and President David Jackson has a pretty simple answer to that question, “Build the project as if you were building it for yourself.” And, stand behind the project that you deliver. “We have built our business on quality work and attention to the client’s needs. This principal has served us well. My company’s slogan is, ’building for the future.’ We stand on the principals of skill, integrity and responsibility. We strive to deliver a quality project to the client’s satisfaction. We want our owners to be satisfied with the project they have invested in,” Jackson said. Originally founded in Corbin in 1957 and now located in London, Hacker Brothers, Inc. is a general contractor and construction manager that builds schools, banks, office buildings, medStory and photos by Mark White
ical care facilities and numerous other types of buildings. Jackson began working at Hacker Brothers, Inc. in 1984 after graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in construction management. Jackson purchased the company in 2001. “My company is blessed to always have projects under construction and future projects in the development phase. We typically maintain five to eight active primary projects,” he said. A typical project will usually employ 100-300 tradesmen during the course of the project. Many of those are local people. “I believe in buying local and hiring local people. I want to promote our area and local talent always. I am thankful for every employee that I have. Most of them live in this area,” Jackson said. Throughout the years, Hacker Brothers has built projects for many clients. And, has had the

privilege to build multiple projects for client/ owners including: Corbin Independent Schools, Laurel County Public Schools, East Bernstadt Independent Schools, Laurel County Public Library and University of the Cumberlands. Currently Hacker Brothers is completing the new Corbin Career Center at the Corbin High School campus. The building, which will open this fall, includes two lab/shop spaces and a shared training class room. The focus of the building is to introduce students to the construction trades. The courses being taught this fall will be commercial carpentry and industrial HVAC/sheetmetal. Students can spend their high school years learning a skill that can lead to immediate em-
ployment upon completion of the courses. Jackson, a graduate of Corbin High School, said that promoting the construction industry is a passion for him. “I, along with many of my subcontractors, look forward to hiring students upon completion of the program. I applaud the Corbin Board of Education for offering vocational learning opportunities and being dedicated to providing first-class facilities for all students,” Jackson said. A few of Hacker Brothers other current projects include: the addition and renovation of Tri-County Cineplex, Laurel County Day Treatment, The Appalachian Wildlife Center at Boone’s Ridge in Bell County, and the addition and renovation at North Laurel High School.

“THEY’RE INTERESTED IN YOU AS A WHOLE PERSON.” — Kim Swafford, Orthopedic Care Success Story
As a self-described go-getter, Kim Swafford doesn’t let anything get her down: “I’m all the way, give it all you can, go with the gusto.” Despite falling while doing some last-minute cleaning before a family vacation, she hobbled onto the camper and headed on to Florida. She returned home to Corbin to learn she had a serious knee injury. Fortunately, the vigor that led to the injury also steered her through surgery and a lengthy recovery that put her back on her feet and on the road again. “Baptist Health outpatient therapy was awesome and knew exactly what exercises I needed to strengthen my muscles. To be able to do things with my grandkids is very fun. If I couldn’t do those things, it just wouldn’t be the same.” Learn more about our advanced Orthopedics Care at BaptistHealth.com/Ortho.
