And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

“THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”

Ennis, old Ennis, we’ll stand by thee; Faithful and loyal we will ever be. True to our colors that stand for right, Loyal sons and daughters of maroon and white. We will always face the conquest with spirits bold, Laurels for old Ennis High will be our goal.

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.

MAROON AND WHITE”

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.

Possible RBs are Jace Berry, Jamarion Wafford and Jeremy Brown, with WRs Lamarion McGowan and Kalen Tisdale as well as the Slot Receiver in Harris.

The transition from previous QB Collin Drake (21-3 in two years) to Jackson Gilkey was silky smooth, despite starting last season with only six starters returning from the previous year. Ennis started 3-0 with Harrell outcoaching his foes, winning by 14 in an offensive shootout, then by seven and by one in back-to-back, come-from-behind triumphs, late in the game or in overtime.

Defensively, three first stringers are in the fold, DE Lonnie Collins, DB De’Antre Rowden and Berry at safety, though DB T.J. McDaniel and LB Jack Sutton saw plenty of action down the stretch. A few players to watch, include DE Julio Dominguez, DL Tiejuan McLeod and Jamioreous Myers, possibly at MLB.

WARDE’S WHEEL H USE

Gilkey, the preseason District Offensive MVP according to DCFT, has 23 schol arship offers going into camp. Two linemen, center Patlan Mendez and guard Julian Castillo, are back. Everyone else will make their first varsity starts.

By then, Jackson was on a roll.

CAUSING AN UP-ROAR

No. 11 ranked Lions face toughest schedule in years

This year the No. 11 ranked Pride return only seven starters, including Gilkey and his favorite Mobile Device, Gracen Harris. They teamed up 78 times for 11 scores. Harrell refers to Harris as the best freshman he’s ever coached.

In HC Sam Harrell’s fourth year back, the Lions extended their string of playoff berths to 10 in-a-row. In fact, the Jungle Kings capped the decade with seven district crowns.

A year after being ranked No. 1 the entire regular season, Ennis assembled a second straight unbeaten regular season and a No. 3 state ranking. Harrell has now led his team to three consecutive district titles and a current 21game district winning streak.

OC Chase Willingham has his work cut out for him, but not as much as his dad, the DC, Paul Willingham, who is now in his 40th year of coaching.

Like Johnny Cash’s song, he was “hotter than a pepper sprout, and we’ve been talkin’ ‘bout Jackson ever since.” The Wisconsin Winger reeled off win ning margins of 28, 33, 29, 45, 24, 28, 48 and 22 points while throwing 23 TDs and just four interceptions.

If the early, pre-district sked is an appetizer, ticket sales should be brisk. A second straight road debut at Waxahachie might again be a precursor, after last year’s 2221 OT thriller for Ennis. The Tribe returns HC Shane Tolleson, QB Roderick Hartsfield, RB Iverson Young, WR Keith Abney and an outstanding defensive secondary. Then comes a pair of home litmus tests, Sept. 2 vs. No. 15 Midlothian, and Sept. 9 against No. 9 ranked Colleyville Heritage. Heritage returns just four starters, but two of them are 6’5 QB West Smith and WR Braden Blueitt. HC Kirk Martin’s team threw on 55 percent of their plays. Midlothian and HC Doug Wendel are the pre-season pick to win District 4-5A in Div. I. RB Deago Benson is back for a team that ran on 82 percent of their plays.

2022

Saving perhaps the best for last, No. 5 ranked Mansfield Summit, visits Ennis on Nov. 4. The district crown figures to be on the line as these are the teams to beat according to Dave Campbell’s Football Texas. The Jags reached the state semi’s in each of the two previous years before dropping down to Class 5A’s Division II. They have 12 returning starters.

DISTRICT DATES - Following the UIL’s redistricting map, the Lions’ only league peer to make the move is Corsicana. Even with a six-game winning streak against the Tigers, Corsicana has the best winning record versus Ennis in over 100-years of playing on the gridiron.

Homecoming is Oct. 21 vs. Seguin. The Cougars are 9-28 over the past four years, but 8-9 in the last two. HC Joe Gordon, previously the DC at Arlington, has a 4-star DB in Jamel Johnson, a Texas commit, leading the Coogs. The road finale may be a trap game, an Oct. 28 trek to Burleson. Their lightning rod HC, Jon Kitna, went 3-0 against Ennis, before stepping down under fire. After two one-year stints elsewhere, he’s back in Texas. Another Kitna son, Jamison, is at QB.

PLAYOFF NOTE - Ennis has qualified for the post-season in 10 consecutive years. The Top 4 teams in District 5 will face four from District 6, where DCFT picks South Oak Cliff, Wilson, Kimball and Hillcrest as playoff reps.

The two Big Cats open District 5-5A action on Sept. 16. Also newly named in April was the Striped Cats’ HC Aric Sardinea. His arrival followed six years at Class 6A Alief Elsik, where he went 8-48. Ennis hosts Everman on Sept. 23. Like ‘Cana, the purple-clad Bulldogs have a new head man. Michael Boone took the leash from Dale Matlock, now the AD. They ran for 227 ypg last year.

An open mid-season date on Sept. 30 is a respite before the final five games. Oct. 7 pits Ennis at Joshua. Second-year HC Danny DeArman led the Owls, whose QB was a freshman. They threw on just 28 percent of their plays. Game 7 will be no walk in the park. The Lions meet No. 20 ranked Midlo Heritage on Oct. 14 at their 7,700 seat bowl stadium. The Jaguars, too, have a new HC in Eric Edwards. He succeeds Lee Wigington (now at Allen). This could be a critical game, as the previous Class 4A RedCats averaged 228.6 passing and 192.5 rushing, passing on 44 percent of their plays. QB Kaden Brown is the man, throwing for 2,776 and running for 1,055.

Schedule Overview -

Year 5 of the Sam Harrell reset brings the stiffest regular season since his heralded return in early 2018. Four foes are ranked and 8-of-the-10 opponents qualified for the playoffs last November, earning the Johnny Cash title, Ring of Fire, as a preview theme.
