is not seasonal, though efforts to protect the skin may need to be stepped up during the summer. The American Academy of Dermatology says one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetimes. In the summer, ultraviolet radiation levels are elevated and people often wear less clothing that exposes more of their skin. According to Dr. Ron Shelton, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, the bulk of sun damage to the skin happens in the summer. These skin wellness tips can help protect the skin and keep it looking its best when the mercury rises.
Utilize vitamin C serums
It’s important to care for the skin daily, but especially so during the summer.
National Geographic says adults can carry eight pounds and 22 square feet of skin on their bodies. Skin guards a person from harmful chemicals, protects the body against extremes in temperature and prevents internal organs and other components from evaporating. The skin also guards against harmful sunlight.Skincare
Essential summer skin care tips
Bi-stone Medical Guide • 5
Hyperpigmentation can occur in summer. According to Omer Ibrahim, a board-certified dermatologist and codirector of clinical research at Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, vitamin C serum can improve the appearance of fine lines, help with collagen production and also prevent hyperpigmentation.
Lather on sunscreen
Lighten up Choose lightweight products for summer usage. This includes cleansers, makeup and oil cleansers. For instance, rather than an oil cleanser, choose a gentle, foaming option. Thicker products mixed with increased perspiration and humidity may lead to clogged pores and inflammation.
Protecting and caring for skin should be part of people’s year-round health care regimens. Such an approach can help people look their best and also uncover any minor issues before they escalate into something more significant.
Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more is recommended to protect the skin from UV damage. But it’s easy to forget to apply sunscreen. However, using a lightweight moisturizer with SPF built in reduces product usage and time spent caring for skin.
Drink more water Higher temperatures and increased perspiration can lead to dehydration. That may cause headaches, dry skin and even lightheadedness. Drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day. Stay in the shade In addition to using sunscreen daily, try to stay out of the sun as much as possible when UV rays are at their strongest, which is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. In addition, wear clothing that offers sunscreen protection.

• Resist the temptation to throw caution to the wind. As more adults and adolescents become fully vaccinated, community transmission should go down. That should calm parents’ fears, but they must keep their guard up anyway. Kids should keep wearing their masks when they go to stores or even outdoor areas like playgrounds or ballgames.
How to keep kids safe until they can be vaccinated
Bi-stone Medical Guide • 11
By mid-spring 2021, tens of millions of people in the United States and Canada had heeded recommendations from public health officials and gotten vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the Public Health Agency of Canada noted that the likelihood for severe illness from COVID-19 was very low for fully vaccinated individuals, prompting many people over the age of 16 to get vaccinated and paving the way for them to return to something resembling normal life. But what about children under 16?
Until all children can be vaccinated against COVID-19, parents must continue to be patient and vigilant. That means safety must once again be a big priority this summer.
With no vaccine available to young children, parents will need to tiptoe through another summer balancing act as they try to keep kids engaged and happy but also safe.
In early May, the FDA was expected to approve the Pfizer vaccine for kids as young as 12. Though that’s welcome news for parents of children between the ages of 12 and 15, those with younger children may be wondering what they can do to keep their youngsters safe this summer. Like their parents, children are itching to get back to normal life, but no one knows when young children will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that children are not little adults, so medical professionals cannot just assume vaccines will have the same effect on kids as they do on older people, including adolescents. Clinical trials on thousands of children are now underway to determine if the COVID-19 vaccines are safe for kids, but the AAP notes that those trials will need to be completed and researchers will need to determine if the shots are safe before kids can receive the vaccinations en masse.
• Dine outside. The CDC notes that on-site outdoor dining where tables are spaced six feet apart is significantly less risky than dining indoors. When dining out this summer, visit restaurants with outdoor seating that meets the minimum distancing recommendations.
• Travel wisely. It’s important that parents keep their guard up on summer vacations as well. Traditional tourist attractions may not be wise when traveling with children who are not yet eligible to be vaccinated. When choosing a vacation destination, choose a locale you can drive to so contact with people from other households is minimized. As you shop for a place to stay, consider a private vacation rental instead of a hotel. Private rentals with their own fully equipped kitchens and barbecue areas can reduce reliance on dining out, which should also make it less likely that kids are exposed to the virus while traveling.

• Bring additional personal information. Donors will need a photo ID, such as a donor card or driver’s license, so donation center workers can confirm their identities. A list of additional forms of acceptable photo identification can be found at redcrossblood.org.
Individuals who want to donate can make the process go smoothly by following these day of donation tips, courtesy of the Red Cross.
Blood donations have dropped considerably since the onset of the pandemic. Even a return to relative normalcy has not solved the emergency blood and platelets shortage. At the end of September 2021, the American Red Cross acknowledged it was facing a significant blood and platelet shortage. According to the Red Cross, the spread of the Delta variant had, by the end of summer 2021, spurred fears and sparked the lowest levels of donor turnout all year. Estimates from the Red Cross by the end of September 2021 suggested the group needed to collect 10,000 additional blood products per week in order to meet the growing demand for blood and platelets.
• Wear appropriate attire. A shirt with sleeves that easily roll up above the elbow is ideal when donating blood.
How to prepare to donate blood
Donors also should bring a list of prescription and over-the-counter medications they’re taking.
• Hydrate prior to your appointment. The Red Cross recommends donors drink an extra pint of water, or another nonalcoholic beverage, prior to their donation appointment.
• Relax. Some relaxing music or lighthearted conversation with fellow donors can help donors soothe any nerves they might have during the donationMedicalprocess.facilities are in need of blood and platelet donations. Individuals can learn more about what they can to do help overcome shortages at redcrossblood.org.
Blood donation is a selfless act that saves lives every day, and organizations like the Red Cross note that it’s safe to donate even as the world continues to battle the COVID-19 virus. For instance, the Red Cross requires that everyone at blood drives and blood donation centers wear a face mask regardless of their vaccination status. In addition, Red Cross protocols allow for face shields, but not as a substitute for face masks.
• Let donation center employees know about previous donor experiences. Donors can share valuable information about past donation experiences that they think are relevant with donation center employees. For example, if donors recall a particular vein that was easily accessible at a previous donation, share that information this time around.
• Start your RapidPass®. After booking an appointment, donors can start their RapidPass® before they arrive at a blood drive or donation center. The RapidPass® is a form that asks donors for some basic information, including their health histories, and takes about 10 to 15 minutes to fill out. Once the form is completed, donors can print it our or email it to themselves and bring it with them to their donation appointments. Filling the form out ahead of an appointment can make appointments go more quickly.
The COVID-19 virus has had a ripple effect that has impacted every facet of life since the World Health Organization first declared a global pandemic nearly two years ago. Individuals are well aware of the effects the pandemic has had on their daily lives, but one lesser known yet significant impact of the virus could have a lasting effect.

Pre-adolescent children also can experience mental illness, which can manifest itself through these symptoms:
•
• Feeling excessively sad or low
Inability to perceive changes in one’s own feelings, behavior or personality. Some individuals experience a lack of insight known as anosognosia, which NAMI describes as unawareness of one’s own mental health condition.
•
• Frequent disobedience or aggression
Individuals who are experiencing any of these symptoms or those who recognize them in loved ones, including children, are urged to contact a health care professional, including their general physicians, who may be able to recommend a mental health specialist. More information is available at www.nami.org.
• Changes in academic performance

The pandemic undoubtedly posed significant challenges that affected the mental health of people across the globe. But those challenges won’t necessarily go away if and when life returns to pre-pandemic normalcy. Nor is there any guarantee that new challenges that pose a threat to individuals’ mental health won’t arise in the years to come. That reality underscores the importance of learning to recognize signs of mental illness in both adults and children.
• Overconsumption of substances such as alcohol or drugs
An intense fear of weight gain or concern with appearance
Changes in sleeping habits or feelings of fatigue and low energy
•
Hyperactive behavior
• Frequent nightmares
Multiple physical ailments without obvious causes, such as headaches, stomach aches and vague and ongoing aches and pains
A 2017 study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimated that 792 million people across the globe lived with a mental health disorder. If that figure is startling, it’s likely even greater as a result of the pandemic.
• Extreme mood changes, including uncontrollable “highs” or feelings of euphoria
• Changes in sex drive
•
Frequent temper tantrums
Warning signs of mental health issues
Difficulty perceiving reality (delusions or hallucinations, in which a person experiences and senses things that don’t exist in objective reality)
•
The National Alliance on Mental Illness notes that each mental illness has its own symptoms, so anyone concerned about their own mental health or the health of a loved one can speak with a mental health professional for more information. In the meantime, the NAMI notes that these are some common signs of mental illness in adults and adolescents.
• Excessive worry or anxiety. Some children may fight with parents to avoid going to bed or school.
Suicidal thoughts
Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated that about four in 10 adults in the United States reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic. That marked a significant uptick since the summer of 2019, when one in 10 adults reported such symptoms.
• Prolonged or significant feelings of irritability or anger
• Feelings of confusion or difficulty concentrating and learning
• Difficulty
• Excessive worrying or fear
• Changes in eating habits, such as increased hunger or lack of appetite
Difficulties handling daily life, including an inability to carry out activities or handle problems and stress that arises each day
•
• Grill more vegetables. Grilled vegetables, whether they’re part of kebabs or simply grilled alongside the main course, add significant flavor and provide all the health benefits of veggies cooked in more traditional ways. The AHA notes that coating vegetables in a healthy oil like olive oil makes it easy to grill them directly over an open flame without sticking. Cooking in this way imparts that signature smoky, grilled flavor to vegetables.
How to make grilling healthier
• Avoid overdoing it. Most people have overindulged at a backyard barbecue at one point or another. The relaxed, party-like atmosphere of the backyard barbecue makes it easy to snack on chips and other unhealthy fare before moving on to burgers and hot dogs. Hosts can do guests a favor by replacing snacks and sides like chips and potato salad with healthier fare like celery, fruit salad or chickpea salad. Keep portions of grilled fare as close to a healthy size as possible. The AHA notes that a healthy portion of meat is around three ounces and no more than six ounces.
16 • Bi-stone Medical Guide
This summer, grilling can be as healthy as it is flavorful. All it takes is a few simple strategies to make the menu at your next backyard barbecue one any doctor would love.
Summer is synonymous with many things, including family vacations and relaxing days at the beach. For foodies, perhaps nothing evokes the spirit of summer more effectively than grilledGrillingfoods.is a beloved tradition, but it’s not necessarily the healthiest way to eat. Traditional backyard barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers likely won’t make physicians’ hearts flutter, but there are ways to enjoy the flavor of grilling without compromising a nutritious diet.
• Replace burgers and hot dogs with healthy proteins. The occasional hamburger or hot dog won’t do much damage, but people who regularly grill should skip these summertime staples and replace them with healthy proteins. The American Heart Association reports that fish and skinless chicken breasts are healthy alternatives to hamburgers and hot dogs. Burger devotees can still enjoy their go-to grilled food, but replace ground beef with lean ground poultry, which contains less saturated fat than red meat.
• Create a salt-free rub. There’s no denying salt makes food more flavorful. But that flavor comes at a high cost. The health care experts Piedmont note that excessive amounts of salt can contribute to inflammation from fluid retention and increase a person’s risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure.
