The right location is imperative in a story, as it sets the mood, impacts the characters and es sentially, sets up the framework for the plot throughout the novel.

“Granbury was absolutely perfect for the setting that I needed. I needed, number one, a town that was fairly close to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area that would make the location of the house believ able. I also needed a small-town atmosphere, and I also needed one where there was a lot of activities, things that I could incor porate into the book and pull in different events,” Dickason said.

BY ASHLEY INGE Staff Writer

Waxahachie resident Anita Dickason is an author known for basing her books in local Texas towns, utilizing locations to cre ate the ideal atmosphere for her stories. Recently, she chose Gran bury as the setting for her newest release, “Deadly Keepsakes: A Tori Winters Mystery” — a mystery and suspense novel published on July “Deadly1. Keepsakes” is Dickason’s eighth novel and the first book in a planned trilogy. The story follows protagonist and nurse Tori Winters, who becomes a star witness in a murder trial and ends up becoming the killer’s next target. Terrified and on

“I don’t know that I could have written this novel if it hadn’t been for Granbury. I would have probably ended up having to come up with an imaginary town, but Granbury was absolutely perfect. It has such a dynamic downtown area. It has that small-town vibe, that historic vibe too as far as the homes and its history. It just fit my book Dickasonperfectly.”isaretired Dallas police officer who served as a patrol officer, undercover narcotics officer, advanced accident investi gator, tactical officer and was the first female sniper on the Dallas

THE PERFECT SETTING: Waxahachie resident and au thor Anita Dickason recently released her eighth novel, “Deadly Keepsakes: A Tori Winters Mystery.” The setting of the novel takes place in Granbury, a town that Dick ason felt was “perfect” for the start of her new murder mystery series.

“I came across a website from the U.K. that ran a contest where every month you submitted a little short story about some picture that the individual would pose and I wrote a little short story about this picture, this doll that was standing in a decrepit old room with skulls and the walls are all broken apart,” she said. “I titled this little 500-word story, ‘Not Dead, Not Dead,’ and to my surprise I got third place in the contest — that was enough to get me going. I found out that I enjoyed writing a whole lot more than I did recon structing accidents and here I am now, eight books later.”

As for her next goals, Dickason plans to finish the Tori Winters Mystery series and continue with her Tracker novels. “Deadly Keepsakes” and her other novels are now available to purchase at Arts & Letters Bookstore, 113 E. Bridge St. in Granbury, and on Amazon.

“All of my books either have a connection to Texas, or they’re lo cated in Texas,” she said. “I’ve had cops chasing the bad guys, east to west, north to south, so it’s all Texas-based.”

She uses her 22 years of law enforcement back ground to help write her stories, like her four Tracker novels in volving a team of elite FBI agents. Her first book, “JFK Assassination Eyewitness: Rush to Conspir acy,” released in 2013, details her reconstruction of a 1966 vehicle accident near Midlothian that killed a key witness to President Ken nedy’s assassination, Lee Bowers Jr. That first novel served as a catalyst for her writing career.

A book signing event for Dickason at Arts & Letters Bookstore will also take place at a later date.

PHOTO CREDIT: PHYLLIS WEBSTER Months to years after a wildfire, some plants in affected areas emerge from buried roots or seeds, particularly wildflowers. FIREWISE LANDSCAPING

BY PHYLLIS WEBSTER

Phyllis Webster earned a degree in journalism before embarking on a long ca reer in public relations and marketing. A Granbury resident since 1998, she has been deeply involved in the community. She is an award-winning writer and photographer, as well as a Master Gardener. A s drought and heat continue, Texas remains a tinderbox. Main taining defensible space around your home is critical to im proving its chances of surviving a wildfire. Defensible space is the area around a structure that is been modified to reduce fire hazards. Making firewise choices in landscape design, materials and plants can slow or halt an oncoming fire.

Post-fire studies also show that homes ignite due to the condition of struc tures and everything around them up to 200 feet. With wildfires nearby, we should prepare our homes to minimize fire risks. First, pay attention to the space up to five feet from any structure. Clean roofs and gutters of dead leaves and debris that could catch embers. Repair or replace any broken shingles, tiles, etc., on roofs that could allow ember penetration. To prevent embers from passing through existing eave and attic vents, retrofit with ember re sistant vents or use 1/8th-inch mesh metal to cover openings. Also, repair any broken windows or screens. Remove debris and combus tible materials from beneath wood en decks. Consider screening under decks. Move any flammable material, such as firewood, away from exterior walls and off porches or patios. With in 10 feet of structures, remove any highly combustible plants, such as ce dar trees. Provide access to water near all sides of structures. In the space from five to 30 feet from structures, create fuel breaks such as driveways, walkways or pati os. Keep lawns mowed. Clear vegetation adja cent to propane tanks. Adequately irrigate landscape beds to keep plants alive; dead vege tation is highly flamma ble. Cut back or remove plants (ladder fuels) from beneath trees to keep flames from traveling into tree crowns and spreading. Prune taller trees so that limbs are six to 10 feet from the ground. Prune to keep tree crowns from touching; preferably dis tancing them 12 to 18 feet apart. Keep tree branches trimmed back to at least 10 feet from any structure. Beyond 30 feet from structures, the goal is to interrupt the fire’s path and mitigate flames. Remove dead/dry vegetation. Dispose of debris near out buildings. Space trees to keep crowns fromGoingtouching.forward, substitute fire re sistant plants for highly flamma ble plant material. Fire resistant is not fireproof, but it is less likely to combust. For more information on firewise plants, see Texas Forest Ser vice at: tfsweb.tamu.edu. If affected by wildfire, expect that some plants may re-establish over time. For answers to your horticulture questions, please call the Texas AgriLife Extension, Hood County at 817-579-3280 or go online to lakegranburymastergardeners.org.visit

Will it minimize wildfire risk?

Research shows embers and small flames are the key sources of struc ture ignition from wildfires. Embers are burning pieces of airborne materi al, which can travel by wind as much as a mile. Spot fires ignite homes, de bris, plants and other materials, some times with horrific consequences.

State Sen. Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury, and State Rep. Glenn Rogers, R-Palo Pinto, were there, as was a staffer of State Rep. Shelby Slawson. The Stephenville Republican will become Hood County’s representative next year through redistrict ing.U.S. Highway 377 spans 461 miles through Texas from Mexico to Oklahoma, crossing seven Texas Department of Transportation districts, 15 counties and 32 cities. It is an important route not just for motorists but for the transport ofIncreasedgoods. traffic caused by explosive population growth is part of the problem with 377, but so is safety.

“I could not have been more pleased with the turnout, the content and the conversation that came after that,” Granbury Mayor Jim Jarratt said. “And now the work begins. We have to make sure that we continue with that momentum.”

If there is strength in numbers, then the turnout at the TEX-21 U.S. Highway 377 Corridor Coalition conference was a show of muscle. More than 170 people from across Texas, including state lawmakers, attended the event hosted by Granbury and Hood County officials. It was held Friday, July 29 at the Lake Granbury Conference Center.

Focus on expansion ramps up

BY KATHY CRUZ Senior Staff Writer

TEX-21 is a transportation infrastructure alliance. Its 377 coalition was recently formed through the efforts of local of ficials in hopes that a group of stakeholders, speaking in one voice, can convince state leaders to prioritize improvements to the thoroughfare.

According to TxDOT, 70% of the thoroughfare is two lanes, undivided.Between 2017 and 2021, 12,422 vehicle accidents occurred on the highway, including 116 fatal crashes, according to TxDOT statistics. The number of fatal accidents in 2021 was twice the number of 2020. Improvements to the highway are important for Granbury and Hood County. In 2018, the county was deemed the ninth fastest growing county in the country by the U.S. Census Bu reau, based on growth that occurred between July 1, 2017, and July 1 of that year.

According to TxDOT, Granbury is one of the top three crash areas that account for 50% of the total crashes in the 377 study area. Thirty-three percent of fatal crashes occurred be tween Stephenville and Granbury.

Twenty-five cities were represented, and the audience in cluded 10 mayors, eight county judges, and representatives of two universities, in addition to county commissioners and others, according to Jarratt.

Granbury Police Chief Mitch Galvan said that from Jan. 1, 2021, through July 27, 2022 — two days before the confer ence — his officers worked 840 accidents on 377. Of those, two were fatalities and 287 were considered major accidents, heTxDOTsaid. plans to widen a nine-mile stretch of 377 in Gran bury from four lanes to six but the first phase isn’t scheduled to begin until 2026. City and county officials hope to speed thatCressonup. Mayor Teena Conway noted that growth is explod ing in Cresson, too. She said that when she was a child, she would routinely cross 377 on her bicycle to buy milk and bread.“Now, that would be a death trap,” she said. Conway, Massingill, Jarratt and City Manager Chris Coffman, one of TEX-21’s nine vice chairs, were part of a nine-member coalition discussion panel during the almost daylongAnotherconference.paneldiscussion included Caroline Mays, TxDOT’s director of planning and multimodal systems, and represen tatives of the seven TxDOT districts traversed by 377. The district representatives “had never been in the same room together” before, Jarratt told the Hood County News.

During

office,

The former commissioner advised residents to be a “constant reminder” to state lawmakers that issues with 377 need to be ad dressed.“Thesad part is we can have all the support in the world from the City Council and Commissioners Court, but by 2026 who will be serving or on those teams to keep the momentum?” Berry said. “Overall, it is a step in the right direction. I know it took 11 years of constant reminders at these types of meetings to finally push Cres son off the start phase.”

The Cresson bypass, which will circumvent the railroad switching station at 377 and State Highway 171, is expected to open to motor ists late next year. kcruz@hcnews.com | 817-579-1886

“I could not have been more pleased with the turn out, the content and the conversation that came after that. And now the work begins. We have to make sure that we continue with that momentum.”

Other their time in the former officials address local officials have long been involved with TEX-21, Jar ratt, who took office last summer, told the HCN that he began par ticipating at the encouragement of Coffman. He said that TEX-21’s David Dean of Dean International, Inc. public policy consultants asked him to take charge of forming a coalition to advocate for im provements to U.S. Highway 377. Jarratt said that Massingill has accompanied him to meet with mayors and other leaders in communities impacted by the high way. The Comanche native said that the road trips are not “costing the citizens here a penny” because he uses the excursions to visit friends.TheHood County Commissioners Court, over which Massingill presides, provided food for the conference. Attendees were treated to breakfast and a hot lunch catered by Hard Eight BBQ.

Although none of Hard Eight’s five locations are in Hood County, Massingill claimed bragging rights because owner Vicki Nivens lives in Granbury and owns Hotel Lucy near the conference center. The conference was an opportunity for local officials to not only showcase Granbury as a tourism destination but to also solidify the new 377 coalition as a force to be reckoned with.

Berry, who has been out of office for four years and was instru mental in securing funding for the Cresson bypass, said he believes the 377 coalition will “build traction.” He said that he is “super proud” of the efforts being made by current leaders.
