Fall Edition 2022 - Hermann Area Visitor4

Hermann is a city in and the county seat of Gasconade County, Missouri, Unit ed States. It has been the county seat since 1842. It is near the center of the Mis souri Rhineland and south of the Missouri River. The population was 2,185 at the 2020 census.

The city is the commercial center of the Hermann American Viticultural Area, whose seven wineries produce about one-third of the state's wine. Designated in 1983, it is one of the first federally recognized American Viticultural Areas. The designation recognized the renaissance of an area of vineyards and wineries estab lished by German immigrants during the mid-19th century. Shut down by Prohibi tion, it began to revive in the 1960s.

Massage for Your Health is closed Sunday and Thurs day.

The float room was added in 2015, Gildehaus did her first float session in June of 2014. After her experi ence of total relaxation of the mind and body she was determined to offer this service in Hermann There are many research proven benefits of floating in a sensory deprivation room/tank/pod. She felt that a sensory reduction environment would be a good choice to offer clients to try this unique experience. The benefits are physical-decompression of the spine, relaxation, recov ery of the muscular system and calming of the mind.

Massage for Your Health, 1011 Market St., offers a variety of services to clients that have grown over the years from the work of owner April Gildehaus.

The business offers 30- to 120-minute massages, 30-90 minute float sessions, 30-45 minute Infrared Sauna Sessions, Couples Packages, Spa packages for up to 3, and individual packages. Gildehaus said these and all other services are listed on her website, www. massageforyourhealth.com.

The business began solely with Swedish massage, hot stone massage, pregnancy massage yet with Gil dehaus gradually adding other services, such as the following: Myofascial release, craniosacral, lymphatic drainage massage, reflexology, raindrop technique, de-stress technique, facial massage, detoxifying body wrap, dry brushing, ultimate foot package, paraffin wax and massage for hands and/or feet, ear candling, and float session.

Gildehaus began the business in 2003 in New Haven and started the massage services in Hermann in 2004. Among those who helped her open the business were Dr. Doris Kutz-Compton and Nancy Satre. In 2005, she was given the opportunity to sublease from Dr. Doug Meyer. In 2006 she moved to the current location at 1011 Market Street giving the business the option of growing and hiring more Licensed Massage Therapists to be able to offer couples massages and spa parties. At that time she was able to open Serenity Place Guest Rooms, which offered 2 bedrooms for up to 8 guests. The guest rooms were a nice addition for a relaxing weekend getaway.

All massages are custom ized to the clients needs She was convinced that massage was her future calling after seeking relief for her own condition and receiving a massage. She graduated from St Louis Col lege of Health Careers in March 2002. Gildehaus takes continuing education classes ev ery two years, which sometimes involves travel. The educational focus is on Myofascial release, craniosa cral, lymphatic drainage, raindrop technique, de-stress technique, and reflexology. All of the training is taken at various times and in other states besides Missouri. Massage appointments have increased since re turning from the pandemic. A steady flow of clients has grown the business since people have, and contin ue to, experience high levels of stress. "More people are getting massages on a regular basis," said Gildehaus. She added that the services provide a great way to take a step back from the stress of everyday living and con tinue self care for better health.

DEUTSCHHEIM IS READY FOR THE

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY DEUTSCHHEIM STATE HISTORIC SITE:

The Deutschheim visitor center is located at 101 W. 2nd St. in Hermann, and the site is open for tours daily through Oct. 31, if you prefer a quieter week day experience than the more celebratory weekends of Oktoberfest. The guided tours include the inside of two 1840s homes and family businesses. If you decide to take a guided tour of the site, be sure to ask your guide to take your photo by the beauti ful grape arbor behind the Strehly house and win ery. The cooler fall weather is a perfect backdrop for strolling down the street on your tour from the Pom mer house to the Strehly house. Our guided tours offer something of interest to everyone. On the tours, our guides discuss a family who made furniture and pianos, a newspaper print shop, and a small winery. On the guided tour, you will encounter two of our newest artifacts that were made locally, a pi anoforte and a zither. The pianoforte was made by Fredrick William Pommer in the 1840s in the fam ily’s pianoforte workshop in Hermann. In 2018, the owner of the pianoforte contacted Deutschheim and asked if we were interested in the piece. Of course we were interested and are delighted to have it back in the place it was made, the Pommer workshop at Deutschheim. Over the last year, John and Mae Wilding of Hermann helped restore the pianoforte back to its beautiful luster. A member of our friends group, the Deutschheim Verein, donated a beautifully detailed zither to the site in 2018. A zither is a German folk instru ment typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the fingers. It is often described as playing three guitars at once! Our 1870s zither was made in the Franz Schwarzer Factory, located in nearby Washington, Missouri. At its peak opera tion, the factory had 25 employees and sold zithers worldwide.Ifyouenjoy your fall visit, please return for the winter holidays. Hermann is a delightful place to ex perience winter holiday festivities. You can find great gifts and items for your home décor at the Kristkindl Markets, or traditional German Christmas markets, the first two weekends in December. At Deutschheim, celebrate a traditional 19th cen tury German Christmas during the first two week ends in December from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. A free open house will be held at the 1840 Pommer House, which will be decorated with Christmas trees adorned with authentic German ornaments. Visitors can sample traditional German Christmas springerle cookies and learn how the Christmas customs of the Ger man immigrants became American traditions that are still celebrated today. Our guided house tours are offered at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily through Oct. 31. Our winter schedule is Thursday-Sunday, begin ning Nov. 1. Our visitor center is open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., but might be closed while tours are being given. The visitor center is located in a c. 1890 home where you will find some exhibits on display, a gift shop with books, German pop-up cards and spring erle cookie molds. Newell said the venture is turning out to be much better for him than just simply directing business operations out of an office. His longtime passing for whiskey also comes from his past business experiences.

For now, Lionheart Whiskey will be able to de liver the customers a 51 percent rye product with a spicy flair. Newell said the whiskey is a little more than five years old.

"This is the quality of the whiskey I enjoy," he said, terming the end result as bold yet elegant.

LIONHEART WHISKEY CO. Fall Edition 2022 - Hermann Area Visitor 21

"My background has always been in business management," he said, including experience in the director and regional sales manager levels and in running various teams. He also worked in dis tribution for two years. It was a collaboration of all those professional skills that led Newell to interest in starting his own business in Hermann.

Newell said the caring feel of those in the world of whiskey played a major role in the decision to launch his own enterprise. He had been a regular visitor to Hermann in recent years and carefully researched the city. He had been looking at other Missouri cities for a possible location to open the whiskey business, and had lived in Columbia for 10 years. Getting ready to open Lionheart Whiskey has been "an undertaking," said Newell. He credits next-door entrepreneur Jennifer Davis for com plementing the business, and said that relation ship has helped him renovate the space.

"You start with someone distilling for you off site," he said. The focus is on creating different products and experimenting with blends.

He said his goal is to starting looking for prop erty, such as a larger facility or a still house, in the years ahead. He will have two full-time employees and was looking for another full-time person on staff. There will be no part-time positions.

"I thought it'd be cool," he said of the concerts. "It'll be directed more to the community." One of the events is being planned for August, while the other is being conceived for September. Ultimate ly, Lionheart hopes to sponsor six annual concerts -- Germantown Jams -- starting in 2023, held at theHeamphitheater.chosethename as an accent on courageous ness and boldness representing the commitment to a business. A look at the Newell family tree also revealed some past experiences in scroll keeping for King Richard the Lionhearted. Whiskey tastings will be done every hour at the 30-minute mark, with tours included. Whiskey-related gifts will also be available, along with the beverages themselves. There will be area and statewide artwork for sale to help promote the efforts of artisans.

Lionheart Whiskey will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and special events will be held on occasion. A website, Lion heartWhiskey.com, is being assembled and will soon be unveiled. There will also be social media presences on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. For more information, contact Newell at (573) 860-0300.

Proprietor Clayton Newell has spent much of the past 15 months preparing to open a new busi ness on historic Schiller Street in Hermann: Lion heart Whiskey Co. The official full opening was held Friday, June 17, at Lionheart Whiskey's location of 215 Schiller St. A complete grand-opening ceremony was being planned for sometime in July. A business background helped inspire Newell to open Lionheart Whiskey.

"Whiskey is a passion," he said, adding that Hermann is a natural with its historic legacy.

Lionheart Whiskey will be sponsoring concerts at the Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheatre, as Newell's way of giving back to the community. He has been involved with music in the past.

"Everyone's so open and welcoming," he said of the business. Those who have been involved in the whiskey distilling industry have been more than willing to lend him the benefit of their experiences.

All of the necessary government permission was obtained to open and operate, and the pa tience has survived occasional equipment delays.

"It helped them and it definitely helped us," he said. The preparations to open began in March 2021, and the work continued ever since. The 1848 building is an historic landmark, and Newell said he's excited due to the nature of constant busi ness activity on Schiller.

Newell said he had been waiting on cases to ar rive to contain the whiskey bottles. Hundreds of bottles were ready to be placed as of mid-June.

The actual distilling isn't going to be done on site, for the time being. Newell said he'll be busy honing in on the right whiskey blend and sales for the next two years.

WURST HAUS HAS BIG PLANS FOR THE FALL

The anticipated target date for the changes in Fulton is Sept. 1. Sloan said the Barnyard Restaurant in Fulton is part of the deal, and will continue with no changes.

Meat classes at Wurst Haus will continue, with a restart in January. The lineup will fea ture Wurst 101, Summer Sausage 101, Bacon 101, Whole Hog Butchery, and Team Building 101. The classes are designed for Friday nights and will last from two to four hours at each session. Participants will have the experience of making on site -- and taking home -- their own meat creations. Refreshments and meals are included in the package deals. Meat class graduates all receive a special packet of seasoning as their "diploma" -- a sign of achievement recognized by Wurst Haus. The seasoning packet is just one part of a goody bag that Sloan extends to each of his graduates.

Sloan said the weekend all-you-can-eat breakfasts are "massive" and feature large crowds. Fruit has been added to the breakfast menu, along with pineapple-bacon bratwurst.

"That's kind of inspired us to create more flavors," he said. A total of 15 new snack stick flavors will be added to Wurst Haus's collec tion. "My intent down the road is to put eggs in there," he added of the vending machines. He said that move should prove quite popular with groups such as the campers.

expects deer processing to pick up speed. About 3,000 deer are expected to be processed at the business."Moreand more people are going into the woods," he said. "I will never, ever have a short age of Accordingmeat." to Sloan, because of the economy, it might not be a bad idea for families to think about stocking up on their meat needs in the holiday period as soon as September. The business will also be taking on a new ad dition: the purchase of Central Missouri Meat & Sausage in Fulton. Sloan said the name will change to Fulton Wurst Haus and Butchery. An integration of that business into the Her mann operations is planned, with an empha sis on beef butchering and availability at the Fulton location. The operation will resemble that now functioning in Hermann, with a store, butchery, and restaurant all on site. The busi ness will be open to 8 or 9 in the evenings.

Owner Mike Sloan said the meat vending machines, located outside the business at 234 E. First St., have grown into an even bigger hit with customers since their debut last year. Ac tually, it's now been just over a year that the machines have graced the front of Wurst Haus.

And Sloan said that amount of time has been key in luring a fast-growing crowd of fans to the variety of its offerings.

Wurst Haus also boasts of 45 bratwurst flavors for Hermannites and others who visit town.As always, Wurst Haus throws open its doors to the many customers from all over who come to Hermann for events such as Freedom Fest. Look for extra hours to be offered at those times, and Sloan said he's contemplating the need to have Wurst Haus open later hours for that matter.

Looking ahead to the autumn, Wurst Haus

"We have figured out what works and what doesn't work," he said of the vending opportu nities. "The vending machines are operating well."Infact, Wurst Haus has been selling a lot of German chocolate cake and carrot cake from the profit-making machines. Sloan said the convenience offered by the machines is turning into great popularity, meaning customers can shop late at night for their favorites in a fast and easy manner.

At present, there are seven flavors of snack sticks in the vending machines. Sloan said the meats are very adaptable for around-town sightseeing and are shelf-stable as well. They've also led to some crafty new ideas.

In the future, there will be a hope to enhance the Friday and Saturday hours at Wurst Haus in response to the demand. But a low labor force will be a challenge.

Gasconade County was organized in 1821 and courts were held in John Heath’s log cabin at the mouth of the Gasconade River until 1825. Up to 1832, courts met alternately at Isaac Perkins’ stead at David Wal do’s farms on the Gasconade, and in 1832 the county seat was established at Mt. Sterling in a log house. The county seat was removed to Hermann in 1842, and a courthouse was ordered to be built, not to exceed $4,000. This courthouse was completed in 1845 and occupied by the court up to April, 1897, when it had to give way to the new building. Hon. J. C. Kiskaddon and Judge R. Hirzel were speakers at the cornerstone lay ing of the new courthouse. Articles were placed in the cornerstone include portions of the will of C. D. Eitzen, as pertaining to his donations; photo of Mr. and Mrs. Eitzen, list of names of state and county officials, photo of Grandma Lessel, who was present at the laying of the cornerstone in 1842; a copy of each paper printed in county, names of architect, contactor, superintendent and foreman; catalog of Gasconade County Fair, school catalogue and course of instructions, photo of Owens ville High School, and rules of circuit court. The Gasconade County Courthouse is thought to be one of the few courthouses in the United States built en tirely with private funds. Charles D. Eitzen, a self-made millionaire, willed the sum of $50,000 to Gasconade County for construction and furnishing of a new court house. The present structure is the second building on the same site to serve as the courthouse. The first was a square, two-story brick building with a hip roof that cost $3,000. Paid for by the City of Hermann, it replaced a 20 by 24-foot log hut at Mt. Sterling. The building was razed in 1896 to make way for the present courthouse. A new metal roof was installed in 2017. Original plans for the new courthouse building, designed by architects J. B. Legg of St. Louis and A. W. Elsner of Jefferson City, called for light-gray or medium-buff brick with terra cotta trim. The main roof was to be dark Pennsyl vania slate, and the tin dome roofs were to be painted a copper color. The rotunda and corridors were to be tiled in Italian marble and mosaic. After bids were opened, the plan was modified to eliminate some of the more costly specifications. Most notably, the new plan called for red brick with stone trim. More than 400,000 bricks went into the new court house. Bricklayers brushed bricks with beer (cheap er than vinegar in those days) to make them shine and even out the color. On February 3rd, 1905, the building was heavily damaged by fire, which destroyed the dome, roof, and a large portion of the second floor. Repairs were completed in December 1905. The court house today remains little changed from its original design. Murals by area artists depicting the history of Gasconade County were added as a part of a centennial celebration in 1998. lovely,
