Game night proved to be a history-mak ing evening for the Iowa Colony Pioneers on more than a few fronts.
Not only did the Pioneers pick up their in augural victory in school history with a 26-7 home-opening triumph over Kipp Sunnyside, Thursday at AISD Freedom Field, the win was also the first for Ray Garza as a head coach.
With the program currently fielding only sophomores and freshmen in their first year of operation, Garza’s squad also became the youngest varsity squad in Alvin ISD history to win on the gridiron. Garza’s hiring to the school district’s fourth high school during the offseason already complete a history making cycle with the former Alvin Yellowjacket tight end then serving as an assistant coach for both Manvel and Shadow Creek football programs.
The Pioneers evened their record at 1-1
after dropping a 51-7 decision at Fort Bend Christian in their Aug. 26 opener.
“Man this is exciting, because these kids have been working hard all summer,” said Garza, who was proudly clutching the first ever vic
tory game ball for the trophy case following the contest. “The coaches also worked hard and it came together tonight. It’s real special for the kids to work hard and come out here and get the first win for the school.
“It’s a special night and a special thing for this school that no one can ever take away from these kids.”
Iowa Colony converted three Senator miscues into touchdowns with Sunnyside muffing a punt following the Pioneers’ sec ond possession for the game’s initial break.
Henry Kalu recovered the loose ball for IC at the Senators’ 20-yard line. While later faced with a fourth-and-14 from the Sunnyside 26, Pioneers’ signal caller Kamal Henry perfectly lofted a strike to Antoine Martin, who made an impressive two-handed grab on a fade route over Senators’ cornerback Kelly Smith in the end zone’s left corner.
Antoine Martin makes reception for first touchdown at home. The extra point attempt misfired, but Iowa Colony still held its first lead ever at 6-0 with 48 seconds left in the opening period.
“We were able to take advantage of some turnovers that gave us good field position,” Garza said. “Offensively we were able to cap italize on that. I think together as a unit we
uation by hitting Zhari Thomas for a 15-yard gain to the IC 47-yard line. Rodrick Samuel also rambled for 18 yards in the series and Carter capped things with a 25-yard keeper with 10:11 remaining in the second.
Eduardo Salgado’s PAT gave the Senators their first lead at 7-6.
Despite turning the ball over deep in their own territory on the next series, Iowa Colony got the ball right back three plays later and marched 47 yards in seven plays for the go ahead score.
After Henry’s 20-yard scramble and Jacody Miles’ 18-yard catch and run put the Pioneers well inside the redzone, a holding call wiped out Miles’ two-yard scoring run. However, Henry came back two plays later to drill Mar tin with a 13-yard fling to regain a 12-7 lead for the Pioneers with 3:10 left before inter mission.
had some good times and a few times when we need to work on some things, especially finishing on some tackling and ball security type deals.
“But overall the kids overcome those issues and kept fighting.”
Sunnyside’s offense finally got going on the ensuing possession, thanks to quarterback Timothy Carter converting a third-and-12 sit
Things then went from bad to worse for Sunnyside, as they not only went three-andout on their next possession, a botched punt snap also gave Iowa Colony the ball at the Senators’ 18. Three plays later, Henry hooked up with Landrew Ward on a slant from five yards out and Miles crossed the goal line on a two-point conversion run to increase the Pio neers’ lead to 20-7 at the break.
Iowa Colony’s defense held the Senators off the board the rest of the way, while Miles added a 14-yard insurance TD run midway in the fourth.
Henry accounted for 118 yards of total of fense (63 passing, 55 rushing) and three TDs. Miles rushed for 76 yards on 15 carries and one TD. Chandler Love picked off a Carter pass and Mason Brown joined Kalu with a fumble recovery.
The floors are polished, signage is up and as the new school year began, Alvin ISD opened their fourth high school in Iowa Colony.
Using their motto: “Blazing the Trail” the new school does not in clude Junior and Senior classes for the next few years. Freshman stu dents entered the school’s doors for the first time on Aug. 17, while Sophomores began classes the following day, with 822 total students registered this first year. The high school has a capacity of 2,500 stu dents once junior and senior classes are present.
The 553,086 square foot high school was built at a cost of $132,450,966, less than the $178,528,000 projected in a 2018 Bond election, with construction on the school beginning in 2019. A junior high school is already under construction on land adjacent to the high school.
There are 108 employees at Iowa Colony High School, including teachers, coaches and office staff.
As the District provides new safety protection for students, guide lines have been followed to require visitors to the school to enter through only one set of doors, and must be buzzed in from the front office staff.
Other safety requirements have been included in the construction,

after the state of Texas added new steps to ensure that doors and gates will be locked securely. The doors cannot be propped open. Cameras have been installed in all of the hallways, and two Alvin ISD po lice officers, all trained in dealing with mental health issues, will be on campus, with others rotating through the high school. Classroom doors are locked while classes are held, and keys must be removed when doors are locked.
There will only be two doors for students to enter the building, and at the start of the day, and after school, the back doors will be locked.
State auditors will visit the new school to make sure the doors meet the new security requirements. However, AISD administrators added to the state list of security measures, including some which have been implemented in other schools in the district for years.
Moving from one classroom to another will be easy for students, since each hallway has a name at its entrance.
Wide hallways, classrooms that accommodate students with special needs, medical classes and all of the traditional high school sports, with three gyms, two weight rooms, a swimming pool, where a swim team will practice, as well as a water polo team … are part of the new complex.
Not only will standard classes be taught, but also some that can lead to immediate job ready status, if a student chooses to go that direction.
Students can graduate with an Emergency Medical Technician cer tificate, if they have an interest in that field. Classes in cosmetology and dental assistants are also available to students at Iowa Colony High School.
The school library holds 630 boxes of books, which totals 14,000 books, all unpacked. Catalogued and shelved by 38 librarians in one day.
The auditorium seats 800, has an automatic screen and stage for events such as plays, and can be rented out. Behind the scenes is a dressing room, prop room and “black box” where drama students can practice.
An orchestra pit was built in front of the stage for musical events.
The Special Education Department provides not only for classroom work, but also kitchens for meal preparation training. In that part of the new high school, there will be Behavioral Intervention classes, Skills classes, and Anger and Behavioral classrooms.
Cleaning the large complex will be easier with the new robot clean er, one of only two in the state of Texas.
We are inundated with various versions of the Holy Bible. Most differ. Many dif fer greatly. Why is that? How are we to know which to choose?
Start by reading the preface. There you should be able to determine whether the version is a translation or a paraphrase. A translation will be an effort to translate the words of the original text. A paraphrase will be an effort to translate the meaning of the original text. The paraphrase will express the meaning of the text as the writer understands it. If his interpretation is slanted or wrong then your bible will be his thoughts, not God’s words. Yes, there are many versions that greatly differ, but some of them do faithfully translate the Word of God.
Let me give you an example. In Luke 5:1-8 Jesus told Simon to let down his nets. Notice nets is plural. Simon let down his net. Notice net is singular. The word of God makes it clear that Simon disobeyed and his net began to break. Had he let down his nets – as Jesus had said – very probably they would not have broken. There’s a great lesson here on ful ly obeying God’s word. But if you have a paraphrase this lesson is very probably lost because “net” is translated “nets” in verse 5 & 6. This is just one of many mistakes in many paraphrases.
Skeptics have scoffed at the many versions asking, “why is there not just one”. Let them scoff. They probably wouldn’t be satisfied even if there was a standard translation.
Most translations do have a good framework of the plan of God and more than ample guidance into God’s salvation. There may be a valid place for paraphrases – for the beginner or casual reader. But the serious student of God’s word wants nothing less than all of what God has said. There are some very good translations of God’s word. Read the preface.
