Mayor Rodney Craddick

Welcome to Hamilton is located in Central Texas where Highway 281 and Hwy 36 intersect. Since becoming the mayor eighteen months ago, it is truly amazing how much Hamilton is changing. We have been blessed with the ability to dream of the possibilities of improving your visit. There is definitely something for you If you want to shop, play, eat, stay, explore, live or share. Our EDC, Historic Main Street, and Chamber of Commerce directors are constantly working to improve your short- or longterm stay with us. Being the mayor gives me the opportunity to attend many meetings and to meet lots of people. Most of the meetings I attend will start with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Hamilton is a town full of people that believe and trust in God and honor the American flag. An example of this is our July 4th celebration each year. You'll find free snow cones, free hot dogs, free face painting, free water and one of the best fireworks displays ever with hundreds of people relaxing and truly living the dream. If you are looking for a great place to live or looking for a place to have a business and be part of a wonderful community, we would love to have you come join our family.

Enjoy

Owners Susan and Ellis Vandiver opened the doors to the winery nine years Winemakerago.Susan creates both sweet and dry wines. Shiraz continues to be the base of many of their wines. In 2020, Red Wing Dove’s 2019 Pinot Blanc brought home gold from the Lone Star International Wine Competition. Gholson Red II, a blend of Shiraz and Tempranillo, brought home silver. As the winemaker for Red Wing Dove, Susan has developed several unique wines that are popular with locals and visitors alike. Local favorite Orange Blossom is a super sweet wine created from Pinot Gris and Viognier. Fermenting the grapes with whole fresh oranges gives the wine a crisp, citrus avor. “It is a favorite with Moscato drinkers,” saidPeñoSusan.Vino is a dry white made of pinot gris grapes. Susan gives it a kick by fermenting the grapes with whole jalapenos. Not only does the wine carry the avor of the jalapeno but depending on the vintage, it re ects the heat, too. “I used big whole jalapenos from HEB in 2015,” said Susan. “It had avor but no heat. In 2016, I used locally grown jalapenos. It nishes with a gentle burn.” Perhaps the overall favorite with locals is Red Wing Dove’s Sangria wine. A super sweet red wine, Susan ferments Shiraz with whole, fresh oranges, lemons, limes and cherries. Beware, unlike many of its counterparts, this is a full-bodied wine. WINE & DINE EVENTS In addition to serving brick oven pizzas every Saturday from 4-7 p.m., the winery hosts fun dining nights: Tamales - Last Friday of the month Prime Rib Steak Burgers - 1st Fridays Ladies' night - 3rd Thursdays Sign up for email updates at redwingdove.com Wine Down at RED WING DOVE WINERY www.HaydenOutdoors.com Red Wing Dove Winery and Vineyard $2,500,000 • 79.61 Acres Triple B Ranch $750,000 • 133.68 Acres The Ranches at Sky Valley, lot 19 $169,900 • 20.02 Acres Ashley Adams 254.688.0087 AshleyAdams@HaydenOutdoors.com Give me a call. Jamie and Cathy Littlejohn opened the market on the corner of East Main and South Bouldin in 2015. “We try to have produce as local as possible when it’s in season,” said Cathy. In addition to raising watermelons, cantaloupe, Israel melons, tomatoes, squash, okra, peppers, onion and eggplant for the market, the Littlejohns work with local farmers, both large and small. One of those small farmers is Gypsy Greens’ owner Gayle Edwards, who keeps the market stocked in microgreens. With a degree in Agriculture Service and Development, Edwards wears many hats. The clay, unexceptional in its original state, becomes pliable in her hands and soon yields itself to the curves and lines her hands create as the potter’s wheel spins. Much like clay in the potter’s hand, Christians believe lives can be transformed into beautiful vessels when they are held and formed by the Master. In learning to work with clay, Christy, the wife of local pastor Ed Chapman, realized that pottery could become a ministry.“Jeremiah 18:6 says like the clay in the hand of the potter so are you in my hand,” Christy said. “There are days that I will come here, and I can’t do it,” Christy said. “Frustrations or bad days impact the ability to make pottery. Pottery helps you relax.”Christy has worked with pottery for more than 13 years and is the founder of the year-old Vessels of Hope, a ministry and fund-raising mission of Hope House, which is a free faith-based recovery home. The ladies of Hope House enjoy fellowship and prayer as they throw the clay at the wheel and form lovely vessels. Once it is on the wheel, the artist’s instinctive hands apply pressure to the clay and pedal the wheel. Mistakes aren’t mourned. The clay can be reused if the artist isn’t satis ed with the results, much like lives can be made new with much work and sometimes manySomerestarts.ofthe Vessels pottery is used to hold Cold Water Candles. A Hamilton Herald News publication54 Visit Hamilton idden away in plain sight in Hamilton is a piece of history from the Great Depression, a treasure that embodies centuries of artistic style and testi es to the relentless resolve of the American spirit.“Texas Rangers in Camp” is one of 90 Texas post o ce murals dating back to 1934 at the height of the Depression. The secco fresco mural by Ward Lockwood is on the bucket list of many Texans who want to see every mural in the state. A product of the Public Works Art Program, the painting depicts four Rangers around a camp re with moonlight dancing in shadows and highlights that make the mural come alive.By the time the Depression ended, about 13 million people had lost their livelihoods, half the banks in America had failed and hopelessness prevailed across the Seekingcountry.away to inspire hope, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was prompted to establish the art program by an old school friend, artist George Biddle, who told him about the success of Mexico’s government-sponsored mural renaissance in the 1920s.

FDR’s New Deal program commissioned artists to create post o ce murals to celebrate the lives, history, hopes and dreams of ordinary Americans.Theprogram commissioned 3700 artists nationwide to beautify public places with depictions of local culture. Between 1934 and 1943, about 97 murals were installed in 69 post o ces and federal buildings throughout Texas. Of those, about eight are lost or destroyed.Murals depicted cowboys and stampedes, folk heroes and even Eastland’s lizard mascot, Ol’ Rip. They also include regional history and early settlement, like the arrival of the conquistadors for the Canyon, El Paso and Amarillo post o ces; pioneer settlers in Mart, Big Spring, Brady and Wellington; and local industries like ranching (Fredericksburg, Amarillo), agriculture (Elgin, Farmersville, Longview), oil operations (Kilgore, Graham) and lumber manufacturing (Jasper, Trinity).

Folk heroes like Sam Bass (Fort Worth) and the Texas Rangers (Fort Worth, Smithville and of course, Hamilton); the cowboy (Odessa, Cooper); and the American Indian (Quanah, Caldwell, Seymour) also are featured. Through regional and national competitions of Roosevelt’s Federal Section of Fine Arts, artist John Ward Lockwood received mural commissions for the Taos County Courthouse, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Post O ce Department Building in Washington, D.C., the Federal Courtroom in Lexington, Kentucky, and post o ces in Wichita, Kansas, Edinburg andLockwoodHamilton. was an artist of varied styles, having studied in the United States and Europe and explored the works of masters of all eras.

It was while he was a student in Kansas in 1917 that he enlisted in the rst O cers Training Camp at Fort Riley. He was commissioned and served in the 89th Division, American Expeditionary Force for two years in France. In 1921, he returned to France and became fascinated with the works of Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh. In 1924 he married artist Clyde Bonebrake, and in 1926 they moved to Taos. They later took teaching positions at Broadmoor Academy in Colorado Springs, University of California at Berkeley and University of Kansas in the 1930s.In1938, Lockwood became the rst Chair of the Department of Art at the University of Texas at Austin, and he was able to build a department free of outdated paradigms, which quickly made it one of the most recognized in theIncountry.1940,he moved to San Francisco and experimented with Abstract and Assemblage, but then got called again to war, serving in World War II and advancing to the rank of colonel. After his service, he returned to California and settled back in Taos, where he died in 1963.

A cowboy artist, Bill Chappell produced western-themed art in a variety of medias including bronze, wood carving, leather and paintings. His artwork graces Christian Real Estate and Pecan Creek Outfitters on the north side of the square. billchappellart.com

Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” is one of the most famous secco frescos. He added white lead undercoats over the plaster to lighten the paint tones. Secco gave him more time to complete his work, but also caused the gradual deterioration of the painting. The present condition of Texas post o ce murals varies. Many have been restored, but several were damaged, destroyed or painted over.Hamilton’s “Texas Rangers in Camp,” however, remains intact, beautiful and treasured by all who see it. 

for “dry fresh,” for his Hamilton mural. This technique dates back to cave walls and also was used by Renaissance artists Raphael and Michelangelo.Themostcommon medium of the Texas post o ce murals was oil on canvas, which was typically glued to the wall. Other murals used relief sculptures executed in wood (Waco), cast stone (Bryan, Houston [lost]) or plaster (Electra).

EARLY JAIL 1894-1938

Fresco is the technique of painting with a mix of water and pigment onto freshly laid wall plaster. As the lime-based plaster dries in the air, carbonation fuses the pigment particles within the plaster, which stabilizes the integrity of the wall and the painted image. Frescos outlast most other media, and the plaster can a ect the painting’s appearance with its aggregates of sand, marble dust or volcanic ash. A secco or “dry” fresco is painted onto dry plaster using egg yolk, oil or glue as a binding medium to set the pigment.

HISTORICAL MARKER

A Hamilton Herald News publication60 Visit Hamilton Built in 1887, the historic Hamilton County Courthouse was restored to its 1930 art deco form in 2012. A monument to Ann Whitney sits on its lawn. It is the perfect place to begin exploring Hamilton's rich history.

John Kuykendall and Olivia Barbee were taken prisoners by the Indians, but Olivia escaped a short distance from the school.

61A Hamilton Herald News publication Visit Hamilton This historical excerpt was printed in the Hamilton News on Friday, Dec. 24, 1954. It was written by the late Miss Oran Jo Pool, A.B., A.M. ecause of the number of people involved and the nature of the attack, an Indian raid on the Leon River School, on Thursday afternoon July 11, 1967, is considered the greatest crime ever committed in Hamilton County. Miss Ann Whitney was the teacher of this log school, which was situated on the South bank of the Leon River, overlooking Worlene Valley. The community was the home of John Baggett, Ezekiel Manning, Cole and James Kuykendall, Alexander Powers, J.B. Hendrix, Judge D.C. Snow, Uel Livingston, Eli Howard, John Pierson, and John Massengill. Pupils attending the school were from most of these homes.

On the afternoon of the tragedy, Amanda Powers, a pupil of the school, sighted a number of horsemen in the valley and believed them to be Indians. Minutes later recognizing that they were Indians and were traveling towards the school, she got her little brother and escaped with him through the window on the north side of the room. Before the Indians arrived, Miss Whitney helped all the children except Mary Jane and Lewis Manning, John Coal, and John and Sara Jane Kuykendall to escape through the window. The Indians surrounded the building; and using the teacher’s body for their target, they shot into the building through the spaces between the logs and through thePleadingwindows.with the Indians to spare the lives of the children, she pushed the boys underneath the house through a crack in theWhileoor. they were pushing in the door, Miss Whitney helped Mary Jane Manning out the window. Sara Jane Kuykendall, who had taken refuge under the writing desk, escaped through the door as the Indians entered the room, but received an arrow in her back as she ed. Miss Whitney’s devotion to the children endured to her last breath, for in dying she fell near the place where the boys were hiding and covered the crack in the oor with her skirts so that her pupils could not be seen. While the attack was in progress, Amanda Howard and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Val Howard, rode by the school on horseback. Aware of what was taking place, they hastened away to spread the alarm. Two Indians discovered the women and left the school to overtake them. Seeing that they were being followed, the Howard women headed straight for the home of John Baggett. As they approached the Baggetts’ house, Miss Howard lashed her horse furiously and cleared the fence in a single bound, but the other horse shied and turned away when it reached the fence, and Mrs. Howard was thrown head rst over the fence into the yard. She was not hurt, and the two women found refuge indoors as the Indians arrived. The Indians took Mrs. Howard’s horse. After the Indians were out of sight, Amanda set out to nd her brothers. Again, she was pursued by the same Indians, and again, she escaped them. Leaving her at the river crossing, the Indians returned to the school to collect their horses and prisoners, then left. As they left the school, the Indians attacked the Strangeline family, who were moving. They knocked the children from their horses; shot Mr. Strangeline until he fell dead from the wagon, and wounded Mrs. Strangeline and her baby. In the meantime, Amanda Howard arrived at the Manning place, where most of the men in the community were threshing wheat. After notifying them of the tragedy at the school, she rode to the home of Judge D.C. Snow, then to the Pierson ranch, where she found her brothers. Miss Bell Snow noti ed Uel Livingston.Thusinformed, these men accompanied by Crockett Hendrix and John Pierson with his hand and hounds, hastened to the school. They did not trail the Indians more than ten miles, for the dogs gave out and the Indians scattered; thus, it was impossible to follow them.

Sara Kuykendall was wounded and went to the Baggett home where the arrow was removed from her back with a pocketknife. She recovered and lived to old age. Reading in a newspaper that a child meeting their son’s description was with a northern Indian agency, the Kuykendalls investigated and recovered John two years after his capture. Miss Whitney lies buried in the GravesGentry Cemetery in Hamilton, Texas, and the following inscription is on the monument, marking her grave. In memory of Ann Whitney, a frontier school teacher; born in Massachusetts about 1835, killed by the Comanche Indians, July 11, 1867. Resting in hope of a glorious resurrection. Erected by the school children of Hamilton County. 

Built in 1905 by John Spurlin, this structure served as a grocery store, general mercantile and cattle sales. Mr. Spurlin was a well-loved merchant and businessman. To show his appreciation to the local citizens, he treated them each year to a picnic and parade at his expense. During WW II, the building was used as the local USO for soldiers.

This 1932 courthouse is the 4th in a series, though its 1886 predecessor forms its central core. In 1932, north and south wings were added to the original structure, as were the pedimented porticos. The exterior and interior of the building were restored in 2012 to its 1932 appearance, with financial help by the citizens of Hamilton County and assistance from the Texas Historical Commission.

Interpretive Sign, 101 N. Rice Since 1907, the beautiful two-story building of Hamilton Bank & Trust Company has been standing stately on the site where one of Hamilton's first hotels once stood. Built in the Breaux Arts style, there is no doubt the investors were making a statement with an edifice designed to impress. An original bas relief shield at the front roof line displays the initials HBTC. Small green tiles adorn the front pilasters in the pattern of chandeliers. The original vault stamped with "Hamilton Bank and Trust Company" on the door, original tin ceiling tiles and vintage light fixures are still visible inside.

18.4 THE HISTORICAL BRIDGES Historical Bridges: Saved from destruction by members of the Hamilton County Historical Museum, this bridge is one of the few remaining Pony-Truss type bridges. The bridge was transported from County Road 222 to the museum grounds by members carefully numbering each of the beams and timbers prior to the removal. The historic bridge now spans a tributary of Pecan Creek in the museum complex. Truly a labor of love.

The old Cotton Gin: Two cotton gins existed side by side on this block. Built in 1917, Lawson Gin was located on the west side of the block. Smith and Claybaugh Gin, located on the east side of the block, was built in 1896. During the busy cotton harvest season, the gins would run 24 hours a day, creating a dust storm that was almost unbearable to citizens living nearby. In 1946, a Case tractor dealership locally known as “Smith & Jones” was added. A New Holland Hay Machinery dealership was added in 1966.

n the heart of Goldthwaite lies a Legacy Plaza, a cultural and educational center honoring early Native American history and preserving the region’s native plants. The Native American Interpretive Center tells the story of the lifestyle of the rst Texans, ancient huntergatherers who lived 15,000 years ago. The center is encompassed by The Texas Botanical Gardens, which exhibits historical native plants used by the rst Texans.Whether self-guided or through guided tours, visitors to the gardens interact with int knapping, cooking pits, plants and even a wickiup in an authentic replica of the environment as early Texans experienced it. “The gardens are telling the story of the rst Texans,” said volunteer Susan Lindsey. “By recreating the gardens from what we understand the land to be like, we’ve kept it as close to history as possible.”Education, conservation and preservation are missions of the center where group presentations, special programs and hands-on youth experiences abound. More than plants, education at the center includes geology, archeology, energy, entomology and ornithology. The center partners with local landowners to provide tours focusing on astronomy, birding and shing. Guests can even experience a working ranch. Legacy Plaza is located at the corner of US Hwy 183 and 2nd Street. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. GARDENS

Working closely with the Ben Hogan Foundation and the Hogan family, the Dublin museum tells the remarkable story of how the family’s blacksmith shop influenced a young boy who, without knowing anything about the world of golf, would become the greatest ballstriker of all time and the manufacturer of some of the finest golf equipment ever made. It is the story of one man’s courage and determination that not only made him a champion and an icon of golf, but also a role model of hard work and focus. 121 E Blackjack St in Dublin, Texas BEN HOGAN MUSEUM Travel back through the decades for a look at how Dublin settlers lived, worked, played, learned, served and worshiped.
