Drive-By Truckers and Anderson East were announced as the headlining acts in May.
"Foothills has really grown into a regional draw and con tinues to be a must-attend event for many people each year. This year's lineup is indicative of the focus on up and com ing artists, combined with names you know to fuel an ener getic music event," said Brent McCarver, who serves in a dual role for the festival as city planner for the City of Jasper and as chairman of Jasper Main Street’s economic vitality committee. Drive-By Truckers, the Saturday night headliner, is a rock band with ties to north Alabama that features Jasper native Matt Patton on bass guitar. Ian Moore wants communion of joy with audience
The late afternoon hours on Saturday is a time when many Foothills Festival audiences have discovered great artists, such as John Paul White and Paul Thorn. Ian Moore easily fits into that category at 5 p.m., although the Austin-native has influenced the music world with his blues guitar and the song "Satisfied," which he said "is covered every night all over the world, like thou sands of times. It wasn't even a radio hit." Over three decades and more than a dozen albums, the artist has explored other styles, but he has begun to return to the blues that won him fans. Moore, who lives with his family on an island near Seattle, is uniquely passionate about music and life; he started a non-profit to provide healthcare to needy Seattle musicians. The full inter view is available as a web-only offering on mountain eagle.com that includes links. One can purchase his music at ianmoore.com.
Q: Although you started out being known for the blues, and played great blues, your offerings have diver

Words hit you really differently, but what doesn't hit you differently is music. Music doesn't have a political agenda. It doesn't have a bias. It doesn't have anything. All it does is it comes out of the world and connects with people.
The funny thing is that I am actually, kind of, right now, at this point of time in my career I'm kind of back to playing a kind of - it's a bluesier set right now, and it's just where I am at. I can tell you a lot of different reasons for why I got there, but it doesn't really matter.
A Guide To Foothills Festival 2022 22 sified through the years. Who have been your musical influences and how has that influence expanded over the years?
The point is I've really, really been loving my guitar - in fact, I've got it in my hands right now; I was practicing before the interview - and that led me back. I'll tell you a theory, and they're all kind of crack pot theories; I'm not saying any are right. ... I'm 53. ...
I just think everything has gone so intense and dif ferent. For me as a songwriter using words, I started to feel like, words are kind of a relative thing right now, depending on what you believe and what you think.
When we were kids, you know, the information was kind of more standardized. Like basically, we all had local news, but we all had the same news sources, and so forth. Not that we all agreed about everything. But basically there were liberals and conservatives and all that kind of stuff, but it was basically the same thing. You might go, "Aww, I don't agree with this," or, "I do."
Well, there's a ton of influences. It's hard to even start. I think the biggest thing that, you know, the dif ference between being a fan of music and the person making it is you have to be on a journey. Whatever that journey is, you're just trying to get better and you're trying to do cooler things than you did the last time. Really, with my music I'm just always trying to get better. I'm always trying to kind of get deeper and get more honest and peel the layers off.
Q: How would you describe your concerts and how you interact with audiences?
A PUBLICATION OF THE DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE23
So, I think, for me, just thinking about my guitar, when I play my guitar everybody is included. That's really what I want, I want everybody to be in on the same thing. I want everyone to be building a commun ion. I really want there to be a joy and inclusion, and it is hard to do right now in the country.
Right now, I think my concerts are pretty high energy, very bluesy and kind of big ... I think just me as a soul and me as a kind of human being in this world and to be on stage, I just always wanted to be real. ... But I think ultimately, I want people to feel like they know me, not just as a person on stage. Other than try ing to keep it together, I'm pretty much the same way off stage and on stage. Like I said, I really, really am in tentional about trying to build a communion, and making everybody feel like they are part of the same thing, because I think that is real important. I think that's the fundamental job of what it is to be a per former right now.

Who doesn’t love Tom Petty? By ANNA LAURA GURGANUS Daily Mountain Eagle

Q: How has it evolved since then? Well, his (Tom Petty's) passing really kicked it up a notch. Like I said, we've been together about 10 years... and after he passed it really changed a lot. A little bit more of a, you know, importance on stuff... and I think it's really evolved over time to a lot more passionate fans these days.
A PUBLICATION OF THE DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE
The purpose of the band The Wildflowers is simple: to celebrate the music of Tom Petty and the Heart breakers. The band is named after guitarist and lead vo calist Jonathan Guthrie's favorite Tom Petty album, Wildflowers. The other members, who are all from the Birmingham area, include bassist Darryell Stone, drummer Steve Lucas, lead guitarist Curt Granger, and Glenn Freeman, who brings keyboards, harmonica, guitar and backing vocals to the group. The band started in 2012 playing locally but quickly gained fans and now travels the nation and beyond playing the Heartbreakers' music with accuracy and respect. As bassist Darryell Stone says, "Who doesn't love Tom Petty?"Theband's music can be found at www.thewildflow ersband.com.Thefollowing is an interview with guitarist and lead vocalist Jonathan Guthrie.
Q: How did the Wildflowers get started? Me and the bass player kinda had an idea to put the band together. He found a drummer and a keyboard player and we rehearsed for about six months or so ‘til we found our guitar player. We've been together for about 10 years, actually a little over 10 years now. But yeah, it just kinda came from me and the bass player having a joke about starting another band.

Q: What is it like to be in a tribute band?
Q: What do you see for the future of the band?
I would like to see the show kinda develop into a couple of different avenues, some more acoustic based shows. That's one thing I'd like to see. We are starting to do a lot more in some of the casino market, that's pretty cool. Really just kinda keeping the roads hot. I'd like to see us 20 years down the road still doing it, still making people happy and playing our favorite songs.
Q: What is your favorite part about being in The Wildflowers?
A PUBLICATION OF THE DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE
27
The fans. The really passionate fans. When you really are playing someone's favorite song and you kinda look down and you see their face smiling or they're singing along, that's really the best part.
There are some people that come up to you, and it's really weird to sign autographs because you're not really that person; you're really just singing your hero's music. You know, some people don't take too kindly to it. There's a lot of shade that gets thrown on tribute art ists. Some tribute artists are looked down on like, "Oh, you couldn't do your own thing"... it's really a lot of performance art. I don't like it when artists go full im personation. You do have to be yourself naturally and I think those make the best tributes. When they don't take themselves too seriously and they are themselves, they just so happen to be similar to that artist. That comes across as a lot more honest. But yeah, a lot of shade gets thrown at tribute artists and it's a really big undertaking to sing a lot of that stuff accurately.

Samantha Fish will bring her blend of blues and rock and roll to this year's Foothills Festival. The award-win ning artist grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and started her music career in the late 2000s. Her debut album was released in 2011 and she has released around seven solo albums. Her most recent album, Faster, was released in 2021 by Rounder Records. Fish has traveled the globe during her 15-year music career to share her vocals, guitar and songwriting talents. She has performed in Alabama, but this will be her first visit to Jasper. Her music can be found on Spotify and other streaming platforms. She also has music videos on You Tube. Samantha Fish's official website is www.saman thafish.com.
Q: When did your career in music begin? It's something I wanted to do as a teenager and I kind of realized it could be done in my late teens. I just set my mind to making it happen and I started on a to bring edgy rock and blues to Foothills Festival

Q: How would you describe your sound?
It's bluesy but a lot of rock and roll mixed in. The newest album has a little bit of pop-tinged flavor, but not overwhelmingly. It's really just kind of badass gui tar and melodic vocals. I like to write catchy songs. That's kind of my focal point when I start, is I just want to write stuff that's catchy and gets stuck in people's heads.
Q: Did you always have a love for music? No. Honestly, I was really shy and my worst night mare would be to sing in front of people, but my mom sang, my sister sang, all my aunts sang, and my dad played guitar ... so it was always kind of around. I started playing drums when I was 13 just to be different from all of them. By 15 I kind of picked up the guitars that were laying around the house and I think I always secretly wanted to sing and be center stage, but I was just painfully shy. Working on the guitar and doing these things in tandem really helped me build my con fidence and I started finding stages when I was 17, 18 years old.
Q: What are your favorite places that you have performed?
Europe is always cool because it's so far away. ... I've gotten to play in New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii, all over the U.S. and Canada. I've played in Mexico, on some islands in the Caribbean. It's just nice to go to far away places and play your music to a crowd of people that want to hear it. It's pretty special.
A Guide To Foothills Festival 2022 30 very local level and branched out to regional once I es tablished myself locally. It just started snowballing.
I like the audience connection. ... Music is all about connection. That's why we listen to it. You hear a song that tells your story. It relates to your life in some way and makes you feel not alone, right? ... It's meant to be enjoyed live.
Q: What is your favorite thing about performing live?
It's something that I've always been pragmatic about, growing my reach and my following. It hasn't plateaued yet, which is kind of amazing. We're still doing new things and getting to new people. ... I have to remind myself sometimes about how if I were talking to myself 15 years ago, I wouldn't believe that I was doing what I'm doing today. It's kind of cool, but it's been a lot of hard work, a lot of miles. You put everything you have into it. I realize how lucky I am. I've been blessed with it.
