If something like that happened in our community, we would have had at least three or four reporters covering different aspects of it. One would get all the impor tant information - who was affected, casualty count, what roads are blocked off, etc. Another would get the first responder’s point of view - how many were working it, how to help those affected. A third would get community reaction. We’d all work together to get things online that people need to know right away. And we had the relationship with the various agencies to help us.

Are there biases in media? Absolutely. We’re human. We have our beliefs. Stories are easily spun, usually depending on who the reporter chooses to interview. I’d like to think I was one of the good ones. We made sure to check our biases and didn’t play favorites. In fact, my brother’s car accident was on the front page. A coworker had to put his brother’s arrest on the front page.
A

house literally exploded in Evansville. My first thought was, “Ugh, I miss the excitement.”Iknowhow callous that sounds, but let me explain. I worked in a newsroom for more than a decade. There were days we sat around with not much to do and there were days that houses exploded (ok, not really; it was Boonville, but the sentiment is the same). We knew the things we covered were tragedies, but it never hit us until after the story was written.
But, we also called out malfeasance in local government. We let you know about new taxes and misappropriation of funds. We told stories of people doing cool and wonderful things. We shed light on the drug problems in the county. We worked to balance the beautiful and the ugly.
We here at the View focus more on the good, for good reason. With the decline in local media, bigger outlets tend to focus on the sensational and the bad. We try to be the prettier picture. Boonville is so much more than its stereotypes.

I absolutely love my job. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss those moments of excitement, though. Even if I’m not sure I’d go back.
Sorry in advance
Media is important. It does not do well to live in blissful ignorance. You NEED to know things. Love it or hate it, media gives you that information.
Also, I wanted to apologize for getting a detail wrong last issue. I incorrectly stated that Amy Leslie’s father worked at State Farm. He actually worked at Farm Bureau. I sincerely apologize for the error on my end.

They’re working on articulation agreements with Ivy Tech, University of Evansville and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, which would allow classes to transfer over to college credits. Some pathways will allow students to be credentialed when they graduate.
Jordan Aigner said that SICTC is at capacity, meaning that students are turned away each year.“So, there’s a capacity problem,” he said. “We’re putting prerequisites on kids when we have a space problem and you can’t get in because of XYZ. So, this creates capacity. By doing this, more kids from Warrick can go to something like this. More kids from Vanderburgh

also have an anatomage table, which will allow students to virtually dissect a human body. It’s basically a computer-generated cadaver.
“You’re going to get them engaged earlier,” School Board member Jordan Aigner said. “The kids that need to do something with their hands and see it and feel it, you’ll get them engaged earlier.”Thegoal is not to compete with SICTC, but compliment it. Gerth said he’d love to see Warrick County kids stay in Warrick County, but the option to go to SICTC is still there. A couple programs will overlap, but they’ve worked to offer different classes to give even more opportunities.
“One of the things this is going to do for our students is allow them to take college classes... They can do that without cost,” Wilhelmus said. “They can go out and they can work anywhere in our community. The businesses need folks doing these jobs. They can fund their college education while they’re going through college. A lot of these places will even pay for college.”
Gerth said this is a true partnership with the community. They’re relying on the business com munity to vocalize their needs within the potential workforce and for internships and capstones.
“We worry so much about the college lane... This is what our group has been wanting: some thing for the ones who are not going to col lege,” local business leader Jerry Aigner said. “Everybody’s not going to college. It’s proven right now. We need plumbers, we need carpen ters, we need electricians.”
On the industrial side, students will have access to large equipment and other things needed to learn the ropes in an industrial setting. Students taking the medical pathway will have access to a state-of-the-art lab. They’ll have dummies that can do everything from give birth to have their heart stop, or any number of things, to simulate situations in the lab for kids to have those experi ences. They’ll
“I’ve only seen one, but I’m looking forward to getting to play with one, to be completely hon est,” Gerth said.
It’s a project 20 years in the making. The Warrick County School Corporation broke ground on the new Warrick Pathways & Career Center this summer. In the end, it will be a boon to both the local economy and the students it serves.“Thecommunity impact that we’re hoping will come from this, we’re looking for students to have the opportunity to train for jobs and come out and affect our community right now,” Principal Drew Gerth said. “They’ll be able to walk out and go right to work and they’ll be able to fill some needs that our community has. The content they learn can be immediately applied.”
The new school is similar in nature to Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC). For Warrick County, though, administrators looked at the largest needs in the community and built the inagural curriculum around those needs. The first six pathways are focused on industrial and healthcare.“Wearerequired to teach the standards,” School Board President Jane Wilhelmus said. “If there is some other measurement or whatever that we’re lacking and we really need to do, we can still fit additional things in if there’s time after we get our standards. That doesn’t mean it’s the only thing we can teach. If we have time, we can add a lot of other things that would be important toPathwaysbusinesses.“are technically a four-year concept for high school students, but they only attend the tech school their junior and senior years. That program is capped off with an internship or cap stone to really help them integrate into the workforce or prepare them for college.
Construction on the $16.7 million project is scheduled to be complete in June, with the school opening for the 2023-2024 school year. With a pro gram like this, though, it’s never actually done.

“What’s next? In the next couple years, if this all goes as it’s supposed to, we’re going to have Phase 2 out there,” Gerth said. “Some of the things we’ve talked about are heavy equipment operator, cyber security, education, civil construction. We’re looking for input over what you, our community, needs from us and our students.”
8 September/October 2022
“The success of this school is not just on Drew, our superintendent or our outstanding staff,” he said. “It’s going to be on every member of our community to convince kids that this is not set tling. This is something to achieve... The kids we’re going to educate in this (school) are going to become outstanding members of our community. Our kids are going to stay here and raise families.”
“I just want to say thank you,” he said. “Thank you from the bottom of our heart for being partners with us, for spreading the word. This is an excit ing time with this school corporation and we have many bright days ahead.”
School Board member Tim Mosbey said this project is a dream come true for the board. Jeff Baker, another member, said it’s on the community to make this successful.
can go to the Vanderburgh (center) because now there’s capacity in the system.”
The school is being built without raising taxes, thanks partly to good planning and partly to donated land. Additional staffing costs have been factored in, as well, but they’ve hired several from within the corporation. Those teachers were already teaching variations of the programs in the high schools. Others are coming from the industry.
“We feel like we’re in pretty good shape, having the people and getting them licensed and creden tialed,” Gerth Superintendentsaid.Todd Lambert said he came into this job last year excited about this project.

14 September/October 2022

Things were a bit different when Pearl Clark was born. That happens in 105 years.

She was born the same year as John F. Kennedy. Women’s Suffrage was gaining traction. Technically, it was also presliced bread.
That same year, Pearl was born at home to Ola Pearl and Edith Wire Bell in DeGonia Springs.“Theyhad a grocery store there,” she said. “We had a fish pond and a small hotel. It was just a small town, but it was beautiful. I was born August 4 in the home.”

Pearl’s mother passed away when her sister, Mary, was born. The family moved to Chandler, where she went to school. She got married at 21 and moved to Boonville, where she cleaned many homes in the community.

looked a little different. Pearl said it was horse and buggy days, but she also remembers riding around in rumble seat cars.“We did our bathing in a wash tub in the kitchen,” she said. “We didn’t have no showers We went to the store twice a month. We didn’t have no church at that tine. I’m a very religious person, or I try to be.”
BoonvilleView.com 15good

With a long life comes its share of heartache. Pearl’s mom passed away when her sister was born. Her husband passed away. Her sister passed away. Her son, who lived in the same apartment complex, died of a massive heart attack six years ago. She’s had grandchildren pass away, as well. But, Pearl chooses to focus on the posi tive aspects of her life.
“Me and my sister was in church and the song was the last song and my sister said, ‘Pearl, I’m going down. Do you want to go with me?’ So, we both walked down the aisle to the alter and we put god in our lives,” she emotionally recalled. “I’ll neverPearlforget.”stilllives on her own in an apartment. She relies on her son, Greg, for transportation, but she is still able to do most things on her own. She said Greg and his wife, Pam, help her with laundry, but she cooks for herself and does her own house work. She said her neighbors are like one big fam ily, as well.
Pearl is pretty spritely for 105. She knows it, too.
“I do really well for being 105 years old,” she said. “I’m not the only one who gets tired. Everyone gets tired. When I go to bed, I put my
head on the pillow and I ask God for help and to take care of me.”

Pearl contributes her longevity to her simple life and her Christian living. She has always been a religious person, but she said her sister, Mary Ashley, kind of led her to God.

“I’ve been here 20 years in this apartment,” she said. “I moved here in 2002. I live by myself. My family, they check on me.”
Greg has seen a lot in his life, as well. He was a Marine in Vietnam and was seriously injured by a booby trap mine. He spent more than a year in the hospital recovering from shrapnel injuries. He returned home, married his high school sweet heart and had two sons. One was stillborn and the other died at 13. Greg knows how precious time is.“You’ve just got to spend as much time as you can with them,” he said.
“I was very satisfied. I’ve had a good life, and a good family,” she said. “I have nieces and neph ews. I’ve really had a joyful life. Sometimes you have heartaches.”

“Don Lutton had the 261 practice and he was going to retire,” he said. “He really didn’t want to see corporate, so we bought that. Within two years, we had that booked full and didn’t have enough room. We bought that the year Dr. Natalie graduated. Two years later, Lee Chapin, right around the corner at Robin Hill, retired, so we bought that. We made that as one clinic at that time. 261 was sick animals and Robin Hills was wellness... That’s been amazing. We just really got some wonderful veterinarians working forEvenus.”adding locations didn’t change the need for a bigger main clinic. Dr. John said a new clinic has been in the works for years. They started planning around five years ago. The original plan was to build on the site of the orig inal clinic, but it wouldn’t fit. So, they set out to find the perfect place. They heard about a lot on Aigner Drive, and everything kind of fell into place.“That was a struggle, but the good Lord brought us here,” John said. “This is the perfect

Just starting out, he didn’t have much. When he decided to open his own practice, He didn’t have the money to build it, so his parents gifted him part of his great-uncle’s farm - which he later paid them back for.
Veterinary medicine has changed a lot over Dr. John Baker’s career. But, so has Boonville. He graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1981. He worked in Posey County for a couple years before return ing to his roots in Warrick County.

“I had equity to go to Boonville Federal,” he said. “Parvin Shelton was a classmate of my grandmother. My grandmother went in and said, ‘Parvin, this boy needs $15,000.’ Parvin looked at my grandmother and said, ‘Well, then we’ll do that.’ That’s the way it was done in those days.”

From the

18 September/October 2022 ground up

For the first seven years, it was just Dr. John. He basically worked 24/7, by himself, and built the practice. Other vets made their way through the clinic. Eventually, it became a two-generation practice. Both his son, Jordan, and daugh ter, Natalie, have now joined the practice.

Even the air supply is safer. There are eight different zones, meaning smells - and pathogens - won’t transfer between different areas of the clinic. There is also an upgraded surgical suite, dental procedure room and isolation areas. The working part of the clinic is a large circle that is surrounded with windows, making it easier for the vets and techs to interact and bounce ideas off of each other.
The new facility is very different from the original. There is no waiting room; patients are taken directly into exam rooms. Those exam rooms are designed to do it all.
“We think that takes a lot of anxiety away from the pets,” Dr. John said. “They stay here, they get checked in here, they get what’s needed and they get checked out here. By and large, it’s a one-stop shop.”

John said that with seven vets between three clinics, pets may not see the same vet every time, but that adds to the level of care, as well.
and pet are comfortable with.
“More vets means you may not see the same person every time, but it gives a quicker and higher level of care,” John said. “When they have a “head scratcher,” they’re able to bounce things off of each other. It essen tially gives pets access to multiple vets at once.”
That’s part of the change, though. John said that it used to be animals hit by cars multiple times a week. He hardly sees that at all anymore. Instead, they focus on wellness. At the beginning of his career, John said an old dog was 8 to 10 years old. They’re now seeing animals live well into their teens.
place.”
“Part of what I want to do is continue to bring advanced options, things like endoscopy and laparoscopy and advanced ultrasound,” Jordan said. “In five years, I’d like to have CT and pos sibly MRI options in general practice, not in spe cialists. I’d like to allow people to do more for their pets advanced without necessarily spend ing thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars at an advanced facility.”
There is a need for those specialists, Jordan said, but there is something to be said about a continuation of care from those who both owner

“The vast majority of dogs when I was a kid were outdoor dogs that were in a kennel or maybe nothing, just running in the back yard. Very rarely do dogs do that anymore,” Jordan said. “Most of them are living in the home, they’re a lot of times sleeping in the bed right next to them. That position of animal is so different now than it was before. Yes, they’re still companions, but now there are people who spend more time with their dogs and cats than with other humans. Because of that, that expectation, that desire to do more for their friend is there. It’s good for us. We want to find wellness issues because it means that everything is pretty good, but we’re catching this early and we have an opportunity to help you vs. it being so bad that now we can’t catch up.”
Warrick County is changing, too. While it has never been super animal-dense, those numbers have fallen drastically over the years. Jordan said that at one point, the county was home to almost 30 working dairies. Today, there are none. Hog and cow herds are smaller, too. That’s why they’re looking to build a haul-in facility.
“If there’s one animal out on a farm that is sick, we can help 10 animals here in the office that are in need,” John said. “It’s very difficult to try to justify that time. We will build that facility and every body is going to have to learn. In other areas, it’s been going on for decades.”

Even if the facility was technically built for the benefit of their furry friends, John said it’s the people that make it great.

“We have the best staff in the world, without question,” he said. “We have awesome techs that do all the work so I can keep practicing. They’re amazing. We’ve had great employees over the years, but it’s just a great crew. It’s fun.”
“Again, the monster of small animal, there’s no shortage of work,” he said. “How do you get in front of as many as you can and efficiently and in a way that the patient is benefitting? The future of veterinary medicine is the expansion of veterinary technicians and nurses, much like what our care is. How often do you see the doctor when you go to the hospital? Dad is right. They’re smart, they’re sharp.”
Jordan agreed, saying that his job is easier because of the people he has helping him.

The Talleys have recently planted three new trees in the yard next to this bed, a Japanese maple, a small white oak that volunteered in one of their beds and a red maple.
A long row boxwoods and fire bushes provide privacy for the back yard.
