property where my wife’s horse lives. He was probably 4-feet long and looked a bit scrawny. The pond is shallow with few fish in it and not much for a growing little gator to eat. Strange as it might seem I felt sorry for him and thought he was kind of cute.

One thing a veterinarian cannot stand is to see an animal go hungry. So, I took a few freezer-burned-bait mullets stuck in the bottom of my freezer out to the pasture and tossed them into the pond. Without hesitation, little “Gary” cruised on over and snatched up the fish. Looking back, I should have stopped there and left him to his own wild ways. No, the parental animal lover now had a mission to keep this guy well fed while practicing “wildlife recycling”. On more than one occasion I picked fresh roadkill off Stewart Road and delivered it to Gary, much to his delight. It wasn’t long before the gator recognized my truck when I drove in anxious for an easy meal. After about a half dozen dead possums and rabbits, Gary became so bold that he would come out of the water for his handout. I had created a little Godzilla! He now associated me, a human, with a ready food source.

One Sunday morning on the way home from the pasture, my wife and I noticed some flashing lights in the rear-view mirror. It was a Texas Game Warden officer, yes, the one straight out of the Lone Star Law TV program. He pulled us over to have a little discussion about my “wildlife recycling” operation. Some neighbors had been watching and reported my gator feeding to the authorities. My gator parenting was about to end abruptly. I was informed by a very professional officer that feeding a free-range alligator in the state of Texas is illegal, even on your own Feedingproperty.alligators, I soon found out, makes them comfortable around people and could lead to dangerous encounters. Alligators that become comfortable around people sometimes

are killed by law enforcement to prevent potential human injury. Alligators usually have a natural fear of humans until they are conditioned by food. I was written a citation by the officer and drove home with my veterinary tail between my legs. I’m glad the camera crew from Lone Star Law was not with the officer or I would have made my television debut as a local lawbreaker.

I stopped feeding the alligator and without food in the pond, he moved on to a new location. We haven’t seen him since but hope he has found a safe home. I can see now how feeding one of these reptiles can get out of hand and create a nuisance. The Growth Equation: Stress + Rest = Growth
is si le e ation a es o better at ever t in B rad Stulberg and Steve Magness, in their book, “Peak Perfor mance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, and Thrive with the New Science of Success,” coined the equation,” Stress Rest Growth.” Their premise is that studies show both the body and the brain respond to stress by becoming stronger so long as the period of stress is followed by adequate rest and recovery.

Whether it is physical, intellectual, or emotional growth, research suggests that if we wish to get better at anything, we need to stress our selves, pushing beyond our current limits. This isn’t to say you should crush yourself in the gym, suddenly take on an insane number of pro jects at work or go from zero practice on a skill to practicing for hours a day. But it does mean that you should actively seek out “just-managea ble challenges.” Activities where you deliberately push yourself ever so slightly outside of your comfort zone. a e the Courage to est Pushing too hard too often stress without rest doesn’t lead to growth. It leads to fatigue and burnout. It’s not just athletes, either. Groundbreaking ideas hardly ever occur when one is at the chalkboard,
The authors reference a study by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Ph.D., who spent 50 years collecting interviews from intellectual and creative geniuses across many disciplines and found that, much like successful athletes, all top performers, regardless of field, followed essentially the same process:
Whether you want to grow your body or mind or get better at a specific skill, you need to push to the outer limits of your current ability and follow that hard work with appropriate recovery and reflection. We hear it everywhere: “Stress is killing us bit by bit.” Stress makes us too fat or too thin. Stress makes us sad, anxious, depressed, or angry. Stress keeps us awake at night and sleepy during the day. Stress has been linked to fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases of every kind, in creased blood pressure, and decreased libido. It turns out, though, that the right type of stress, in the right amounts, for the right amount of time can help improve symptoms of every single condition mentioned above. Stulberg and Magness learned that the world’s best performers follow a common pathway to continual growth. They take on challenges, make themselves uncomfortable (stress), and then follow those challenges with recovery and reflection (rest). Then they rinse and repeat, with a slightly greater challenge. Too much stress, not enough rest, and the result is injury, illness, or burnout. Not enough stress, too much rest, and the result is complacency.

For our bodies, it is during rest that hormones are released, making us more resilient to future challenges. For our minds, it is during day dreaming, mind-wandering, and relaxation that our subconscious has the opportunity to kick in, helping us generate “aha” moments of insight. And it’s during sleep that our brains process, consolidate, connect, and store all the information we were exposed to during the day. So many people make the mistake of cutting sleep to do more work when sleep is one of the most productive things you can do. Then ask yourself, are you following a trajecto ry of stress rest growth? Other items spotted among the wreckage are muskets, swords, cannons, and clothing. Selma But perhaps the best-known shipwreck involving Galveston is Selma. A shipwreck ruin from World War I in the middle of the Galveston Bay. Shipwrecks aren’t just the stuff of movies. This is one that you can see with your own two eyes. The SS Selma, a ship built during WWI, is located just north of Pelican Island in Galveston Bay. Slowly succumbing to the elements, the ruins of the historic vessel are awe-inspiring to behold. The ship was built in 1919 for use in World War I.

Texas Marine archaeologists are excited and eager to share the discovery a well-preserved 200-year-old shipwreck almost a mile deep in the Gulf of Mexico. A team from Texas State University in San Marcos are calling it the deepest shipwreck 4,363 feet down in the Gulf of Mexico and in North America. The remains are 170 miles southeast of Galveston and a big deal because of the degree of preservation. Undersea images show an outline of an 84-foot-long, 26-foot-wide wooden hull and copper-clad sailing vessel, probably with two masts.

For a reason nobody lly nderstands, fish o all di erent types ock to the shipwreck, and the best times to catch them (dawn and just before dusk) are also when the scenery is most beautiful. When the sun dips below the ruins and casts a hauntingly beautiful silhouette on the water, it truly is a picture-perfect view. Here is a map to help you know the exact location.

This happened during a confrontation with Confederate forces. The wreck of Hatteras is the property of the United States Navy, though the Texas Historical Commission, Texas A&M University at Galveston and the federal Minerals Management Service which is now the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
la elle In 1684, French King Louis XIV sent explorer René-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle, across the ocean with four ships and 400 people to North America. He planned to land between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Galveston Island. All the ships and crew were lost. In 1995, after a more than decade-long hunt, Texas Historical Commission archaeologists found one of the la Salle vessels named la Belle, in a coastal bay of Galveston. The ship and crew of the LaBelle went down in a storm in the winter of 1686. Efforts to restore the La Belle, was begun by researchers at Texas A&M University’s Conservation Research Laboratory.

I once heard it said that a weed was any plant growing where it did not belong. And that is a fairly true statement. However, I think we can all agree that a sticker plant does not belong anywhere! This is a weed regardless of where it grows.
Here’s how to get rid of it: Add compost! Are you surprised? Did you think I was going to give you a list of poisons to spray? The funny thing about weeds is that they pre fer certain conditions to thrive. Sticker plants are no different. Guess what conditions they prefer? Dry, sandy soil. Yep, pretty much what the whole island and most of the Gulf Coast is made of. So, here is how you fix it. Add organic matter, compost being the most common type, to your soil. Organic matter adds micro nutrients, good bacteria, and it holds water. This will not fix the problems overnight, but it will fix the problems. By adding a thin layer of compost to your lawn in the spring and fall (or more of ten if you can) you will create an environment that stickers hate. Simultaneously, you will also be creating an environment that your lawn and your plants love. Organic matter in the soil equals pretty flowers. So, whenever you have a “weed problem,” what you really have is a soil problem. Fix the soil and you will fix most of the weed problems. This is a situation where the energy you spend build ing something you want does better than fighting something you hate. Weed

A laughing Buddha is the ultimate symbol of happiness, taking away any problem, symbolizing good fortune, wealth, and life fulfillment. Known as Hotei among the Chinese people, it is believed that if a per son rubs his belly, it brings good luck. It certainly must be true as good fortune has guided us to this fine Chinese restaurant.
A large, fully stocked bar makes for festive occasions or a quiet intimate cocktail. Exotic tiki-style drinks are a feature, and happy hour can get busy. The restaurant is conveniently located on 61st near the Seawall. The building was formerly a steakhouse done in the 1960 faux English
The main menu contains familiar dishes - sweet and sour pork, pepper steak, and restaurant chow mein that make for easy selections; or you can spice it up a notch with Mongolian beef or Jalapeno chicken.
As befitting a Chinese restaurant, there is a large selection of noodle dishes, with my standout favorite, Singapore-style rice noodles, that simply must be tried at least once.
Primarily offering Cantonese and Mandarin styles, the restaurant has a broad menu and there is something for every palate. The menu is quite large but easily navigated. Traditional American style Chinese servings as individual dishes or combined family style where you have a choice of entrees for a set price. The menu is partitioned by food type, i.e., poultry, seafood, beef, and more. It also offers combination plates that contain fried rice, egg rolls, and soup. The menu opens with soups and appetizers. I enjoy their wonton soup which has a deep chicken base and a generous serving of stuffed wontons that proves to be very satisfying. Their hot and sour is also very good as is their vegetable and cream of corn. The appetizers are fairly standard with egg rolls and fried wonton (potstickers) but also some tasty Chinese ribs, chicken wings, and fantail shrimp.
Several varieties of that old standby Egg Foo Young are offered as are various combinations of fried rice. Their weekday lunches are a great bargain and include fried rice, soup (try their special vegetable or my favorite, wonton) a large, tasty egg roll served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce or flaming mustard that completes the plate and makes for a very satisfying

I t seems to us that the number of outright rude people is at an alltime high. You see it everywhere. You can’t seem to ask a simple question to a group online anymore without receiving several unsolicited rude and snarky comments.
A lot of this has to do with the fact that people can conceal their identities online. They have no risk of ever being punched in the nose so they relish being totally rude jerks. The term “keyboard warrior” is very accurate. It’s even more upsetting to witness extreme rudeness in public. This seems to be really prevalent in the way people treat service industry seem to take total enjoyment in being rude and nasty to restaurant waiters, bartenders, and other types of service workers. We can’t think of a harder job. The respect we have for service industry people is tremendous. A down-on-her-luck flower seller gets an intro duction into the world of high society in this lovely musical. Eliza is the perfect leading lady she’s feisty, smart, and independent. In recent produc tions, including the 2018 Broadway revival, she even gets a more modern ending. (Which, despite some howling from so-called purists, is actually true to Pygmalion, the source material for the musical.
The Golden Age of Broadway, which started during World War II and ran through the 1950s, spawned some of the most famous musicals in the world. Composers and lyricists began working at a fast and furious pace new musicals came out every year. In 1957 alone, the theater world was graced with Cinderella, The Music Man, and West Side Story. Many of these classic musicals are still going strong today. They’re staples with professional and community theaters you’ve probably watched or performed in [as I have] more than a few!

The best Golden Age musicals have one thing in common: they’re so singable. These are the kinds of musicals where you walk out of the theater singing. (Is there anything better than that kind of joy?) Here are seven of the 49 Golden Age Musicals as chosen by TheatreLove. com he Soun of usic Is there a more famous musical than The Sound of Music? It’s one of the classic musicals for high schools, community theaters, colleges, and professional companies. In fact, there are nearly 100 productions scheduled to open in the first half of 2022 alone! The story is timeless: novice nun Maria is sent to be the governess for the seven children of a widower. It has singing nuns, matching outfits, and Nazis.

Year: 1956 Music: Fred rick Loewe Book and Lyrics: Alan Jay Lerner he usic an A charming con man steals the hearts (and the money) of the people of River City, Iowa, in this classic Golden Age musical. The music is irresist ible you’ll be singing “Goodnight My Someone” at intermission and there’s plenty of dancing. Add in the brass-heavy or chestra score, and you have the perfect old-world Americana vision. The most recent Broadway revival opened in February of 2022, starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. Year: 1957 Book, Music, and Lyrics: Meredith Wilson est Si e Stor Star-crossed lovers meet in the midst of a danceheavy gang war in West Side Story. It’s one of the most complex musicals of the Golden Age, both in terms of lyrics and music. (Bernstein and Sondheim? Come on!) The story is based on Romeo and Juliet and set on the streets of New York. Unlike most musicals of the time, this one doesn’t have a happy ending.

Unlike many shows from that period, it’s not all because of the male-female power dynamic Annie Oakley can hold her own. Rather, the issue stems from the Native American characters, who are reduced to caricatures. The music, written by Irving Berlin, is spectacular, which makes the show worth pro ducing. That means that contemporary productions need to find a solution that’s palatable for modern audiences. Most opt to produce Peter Stone’s version which cuts the song, “I’m an Indian, Too” (yes, it’s as cringeworthy as you’d imagine).
Oklahoma! is the quintessential American mu sical, for good or for ill. Everyone has their own opinion about the show itself (Just when you think it’s over, surprise it’s not!), but there’s no doubt that it set the tone for all of the Golden Age musicals to come. M ost visitors to Galveston have experienced its magical, magnetic allure drawing them in and keeping them coming back. But can that magnetism skip a few generations and remain in effect? Apparently, in the case of fretless guitar master Ned Evett, it can. Evett was born in Nashville, Tennessee and raised in Boise, Idaho. In 2012, he came to Galveston to play a show at the Old Quarter while on tour with singer-songwriter David Olney. Evett happened to call his mom after the show and was in ormed or the first time that his amily on his ather s side was rom alveston.

58 Waves Magazine | September 2022 www.wavesgalveston.com M y first use of trailer baits was in 1961. I don’t know where the idea came from; other fishermen, a magazine? If I was writing this piece and was 22 years old again, I’d know, but today, it’s facts forgottenWhenever it was, the two ways used were simple. First was pieces of wooden broom handle cut to about 5 inches long, with a long screw eye in each of their squared-offends. They had about 6-8 inches of mono connected to a 1/4-ounce silver spoon or yellow bucktail dressed treble hook. That one worked well when specks were chasing shrimp, etc. to the surface. The other was a 1/4-ounce silver, Mr. ChampTM, hook removed, trailed by a yellow bucktail-dressed treble hook. This was a hot setup for me when fishing for flounder in the Galveston beachfront, working between the legs of the Pleasure Pier or parallel to those old wooden groins and bouncing it off the washouts’ bottom. The flounder would see the flash and puff of sand and then nail the following dressed treble. The point of this is that the trailer fishing method has been around a long time, long before ‘61. A topwater lure seems to work best when the back-treble hook is removed, and the trailer connection tied to the eye. With a heavier, sinking lure, this combo has the appear ance of the smaller trailer following at a safe distance. The trailer’s freedom of movement, giving a natural look, comes partially from its relatively light weight—like a flag waving in the breeze—and we all know how good that looks. This all happens whether it’s behind a popper, sinking lure, etc. Poppers call in an assortment of predators from a distance with their surface commotion. Whether it’s a strip bait, glob of squid, whole squid, baitfish, lead head jig, etc., it has a good chance of getting bit. Naturally, wire comes into play when kingfish or wahoo are involved. A distance between the popper and trailer of 2 feet is a good one. Regardless of the connector links material, loop connections are important to give the trailer presentation maximum freedom of movement. Kingfish and wahoo really respond to a big KrocodiIeTM spoon with a dressed hook trailing when virtually skipped across the surface. Sight fishing, surface casting, skyrock eting kingfish or wahoo are a hard to beat offshore combi nation. Strip baits, 1/2” x 2” x 6”, of bonito, bluefish, etc. are all strike attractors. Ling, in particular, seem to covet a big glob of squid. They also like crab, eel and big worm soft plastics. After floating back, let your presentation sit at about 100 ft., giving periodic rod tip twitches to activate the popper, etc. work it back a bit, let it drift out again. When fished from a rod holder “long” with the reel in gear, you have one of the best combinations working. The boat’s movement from wave action and a premier hook setter the rod holder. At any time when the popper is at rest, the strip bait will sink a bit and respond to popper movement from rod tip twitches, making the bait strip rise erratically. Be es pecially careful when your trailer bait is at or very near the surface A predator striking from below pushes a pressure wave ahead of it which may blow your hooked trailer out of the water. You can’t set a hook in a blowup. You must feel the weight of the fish on the hook. Premature hook setting could have everything coming back at you. When fishing the mid-depths to the bottom, treble hook trailers may cause hang-up problems if structure is around. A much better choice is ‘T’ or circle hooks. Fishing the mid-depths to the bottom is best done with a light or floating trailer behind a spoon, sinking lure, etc. I always remove the spoon’s hook and tie onto the split ring or the spoon itself with the trailer’s connecting link. The trailer can be a floater or “flotation added” as in a piece of styro foam in a strip bait, keeping your strip bait etc. in view, up and away from bottom obstructions; lighter colored trailer baits are easier to spot. When casting any presentation with a trailer and bait combination, it’s important to slow your cast just before your lure and trailer are about to enter the water, straightening it all out away from you immediately before entry. As in most fishing situations, it’s the combination that counts. Surface lures or deep runners with a baited trailer will put fish on the boat, whether you’re fishing offshore, near shore, or in the “Trailerbays Baits Get’Em”

Gracia’s kitchen growing up and what a wonderful cook she was. She made seasoned fideo as a side, with ground beef as a meal or with chicken she boiled all day as a soup. My recipe has wild rooter meat with a spice blend I made years ago in her memory called Southwestern Sizzler. It’s great in fideo, beans, rice, taco meat or any recipe that calls for chilli powder. Start by heating a cast iron skillet while melting the lard then add meat, garlic, onion, serrano, poblano, ground peppercorns and sea salt plus juice from one half of the lime. Brown on high stirring constant until all liquid is cooked off then set skillet aside. Heat canola oil in a stock pot and brown the vermicelli stirring fast not allowing it to burn then stir in tomato sauce until coated. Next add tomatoes, stock, water, juice of second lime half, TSS seasonings, oregano, cumin, meat mixture from skillet and bring to a hard boil. Cook on high until liquid is reduced more than half then reduce heat to low, add cilantro and cover. Stir often and cook an additional minutes or until desired consistency. Note I soft fry corn tortillas and lightly salt to eat with my fideo along with seasoned avocado and tomato slices. This can stand alone as a meal or be used as a side dish, ENJOY!

Billy, along with co-owners Corey and Abby Tomkins and manager Susan Merriweather, brought the need for a convenience store and freshly roasted coffee, sold in many forms, to the downtown area last month.
“You can never have too much good coffee. Galveston was the immediate choice. The island has a kindred spirit to my hometown in Louisiana and has been a favorite destination for Corey and Abby who are from Dallas. The island’s rich history in coffee also made it a no-brainer.”, said Billy. Small batch, ethically sourced coffee comes directly from their farm in Honduras and is then freshly roasted, by Billy, right there at the corner store. The specialty of the house is a nitrogen-infused cold brew. With the surge in popularity of the pod-style coffees, the owners spent over a year trying to ensure that they could produce a coffee that still had high standards in taste and freshness, but within a pod for the K-style coffee

Schools provide warmth and AC where many children have none. For some, schools are a haven because some children live on the streets, in cars or in homeless shelters. Some live in places that have no running water, toilets and electricity.
W
ow, it’s September and Labor Day has come and gone. It’s hard to believe 2022 is winding down. It’s hard to believe we have lived through two years of Covid, a nightmare for the ages. It shut down our economy and our schools. The damage from the lost year, or in some cases, two, include loss of academic learning, depression, increase drug use and an increase in suicide among school age children. Covid scared us but did not stop us from bouncing back. Our resolve is greater than this virus.
Now “It’s Time for School!”
Schools provide person-to-person socialization and interaction away from “devices”, television and the cell phone. Administrators, coaches and teachers often are the shoulders for kids to cry on and to tell of their trials and hardships they are enduring at home or on social media. Schools allow students to engage and excel in extracurricular activities like, Ag, Theater Arts, Band and Sports. Schools provide millions of breakfasts and lunches for the needy. Special Needs students get services that parents can’t provide, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, 504 accommo dations, interventions, and modifications just to mention a few services.
Many people now realize society may have taken schools for granted. Par ents saw how difficult it is to teach their own children and that schools helped occupy their children so parents could go to work.
It’s Time for School
There are many reasons to criticize schools, such as the curriculum taught, the expectations by teachers, the bullying of children, the fear of keeping them protected from school shootings, and more. However, a vast majority of schools do a great job! Schools have teachers who care and only want to do the best for their students. There will always be challenges and differences with parents and teachers, players and coaches, students and teachers, and finally students and students. It is during these times we learn to grow as a person, learn from our mistakes, our challenges and develop relationships that will help us become citizens of tomorrow.
Parents and teachers want to keep their children and students safe, but with the different variants of COVID19 we must still be vigilant in how we deal with the virus this fall. We now know children are the least likely to be affect ed. Parents should ask their health care providers if the vaccines are right for their children. As we adjust to this new normal, we must find a way to keep kids in the classroom, teachers teaching and parents back to work.

The value of education is the priority that parents and teachers place on it. Our society will be great if we teach our children the importance of education…. All education, from high school, college and vocational degrees. We must also consider apprenticeships as well. We know our workforce is aging and there will be a need to replace skilled and unskilled labor alike. As I said, “It’s Time for School!”
One thing I hope we’ve learned is that regardless of who you are and your beliefs, we should treat each other with respect. For some, this disease has little affect, for others, it can be deadly. So, if someone is masked, they may have a very good reason and we should not criticize or ridicule.
